The Democrats know something is afoot. They know that Trump is planning to
overturn the 2026 elections if he can. This means a major step towards outright
bonapartist rule, and it's not just any bonapartism; it's bonapartist rule by a
man who is half out of his mind, who is totally corrupt, whose economic
policies (tariffs) are contrary to the interests of US and global capitalism,
whose rule will massively disrupt US stability, and who is allied with a major
rival of US capitalism - Putin. But it's not only these Democrats. Standing
behind them - as always - is a major section of the US capitalist class. They
have no need to turn away from rule through democratic means. After all, their
rule is not being challenged by a united and radicalized working class. On the
contrary.

Many socialists analyze Trump's policies from the point of view of what the
capitalists want. They completely miss what is happening in US politics today.
Going all the way back to 2016 we see how much the influence of the capitalist
class has been weakened. Their clear choice for the Republican presidential
nomination was Jeb Bush. (Remember him?) After Trump deflated his balloon, they
turned to other candidates, all of whom Trump disposed of one by one. Then,
when he won the nomination the capitalist class pretty much agreed upon Hillary
Clinton. We know what happened there. It's true that a large layer of the
capitalist class supported Trump in 2024, but they thought they could control
him, especially around the issue of tariffs. In general they thought his
presidency would be like it first one was. (There are several articles in the
NY Times and the WSJ explaining that.) At times, the capitalist class makes
huge blunders. Usually these blunders result from extreme arrogance. Their
support for the neo cons' invasion of Iraq was one such example. Their support
for Trump was another, although they were not united in that support in any
case.

But there is one remaining question: In 2024 the overwhelming majority of
socialists opposed voting for Biden and then Harris. Most of them hid behind
the issue of Gaza, but this was dishonest. In fact, their view was and remains
that voting for a Democrat violates some sort of historic principle and,
anyway, there is not much difference between the two parties. 20 years ago one
could make such a claim in regards to the difference between the two parties,
but today? These Democrats actually understand the situation better than most
socialists. How ironic!
