I rarely put my 5-disc CD carousel into the shuffle or random mode, because
the cursed thing takes a good 10 seconds to find the next disc and track.
Buffer?! No wonder it was cheap... (#$%&@!)

Some car CD changers also have this problem where it has the long delay and
you're left sitting there waiting. I could live with that if it is
explained in the manual that there will be a long delay (condidering that
3-5 seconds is considered "normal" [in the loosest sense]) when you put the
unit in shuffle/random mode, because the unit truly does not know what
track will come next. However, if you sit there and program what tracks on
what discs the unit should play, then it makes sense that the 20-30 seconds
of the beginning of the next song should be read into memory or the buffer
so there is only minimal silence between songs.

Hmm.... maybe I'm just alone on this part :-( Well, I was looking at this
one 5-disc CD carousel w/ pitch control that I fancied...

[snip]
I would be amazed if *any* CD or MD unit did not begin filling the buffer
ASAP with the next track, after all the whole idea is to keep it full and
whether the next track follows sequentially or is elsewhere should be
irrelevant.

As for disc changers, I don't know how long they need to faff about with
the discs but a 40sec memory should be more than adequate.

Cheers,
PrinceGaz -> you can play with me direct, or from your memory
