OK, so I left the setup on in
ctrl-alt f5 to root shell mode for 3 hours,
came backto a blank black screen,
hit enter and root shell returned.

I then sat and watched for 30 minutes, it goes down
to bios induced blank black screen in about 10 minutes,
but I just keep hitting enter to restore root shell
and keep this up for 30 minutes.

I cannot say I observed any power off and back to root
shell in a few seconds like in desktop, so all that is
happening is that bios APM is doing it's job.
So I'm coming round to the fact that the monitor
is not really up to the screen resolution rates.

Now I actually have this monitor's double, exactly the same make
model etc on another computer, with M8.1, but with
1280x1024 , with 65thousand(16bits) on a riva vid card,and
it is ok. so, I'm going to drop the coulour resolution down
from 24 bits to 16 bits for a while and see whether it
helps,

will report back this evening.

PS,

I found the monitor Manual, been looking for it for ages.

Model 1772ie by I think TCO, if that means anything.

screen 17" , 15.9" visible
dot pitch 0.27mm
surface coating AG,AR, AS coating
nom V 100 to 240
nom. current max.2A
nom. frequency 50 - 60 Hz
Power Consumption max 100W
Max resolution 1280x1024
H. frequency 30-72kHz
V. frequency 50-120 Hz
Bandwidth 110 Mhz
Video input 15-pin mini D-sub connector
adjustable freq. 12 factory presets, 10 user modes
User Control OSD(intelligent on-screen-display)
temp. Operating +5C ~ +41C
      non op. -20C ~ + 60C
Moisture op 20% ~ 90%
      non op 10% ~ 90%
Compliance MPRII,CE, ISO9241-3,TCO95
wt 16.5

So my prefered res of 1280x1024 @60 Hz is supposed to
work fine. Does the bit rate add to the load greatly ?
or is this mainlya CPU question ?
