FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS TELL MPs " STAND UP FOR SAFE STANDING"

Football supporters throughout Britain have called on politicians of all parties to
back the creation of safe standing areas for spectators at top soccer grounds
nationwide in a Commons vote next Friday 2 November 2001.

The Football Supporters' Association (FSA) and the National Federation of Football
Supporters' Clubs (NFFSC) have both backed Birmingham MP Roger Godsiff's (Labour)
Private Members' Bill which would permit Premiership and First Division clubs to
create safe standing areas at their grounds in consultation with their supporters.

Commenting on the move FSA Chair and Stoke City supporter Malcolm Clarke said, "What
fans DON'T want is a return to Hillsborough and Heysel. What we do want is choice.
Just like supporters have in Germany. Look at the Shalke 04's wonderful new ground in
Gelsenkirchen. It's a state of the art development with a retractable roof and
roll-out pitch. It has a capacity of 60,000 including standing spaces for 16,000 in
specially constructed areas. These zones can be converted to seats in minutes to
comply with regulations for European and international games. Borussia Dortmund also
opened a brand new 20,000 capacity standing area in their 68,000 capacity ground a
couple of seasons ago. These developments involved the fans at every stage.

"It makes no sense," Clarke continued, "to allow standing in the Second and Third
Divisions, at both rugby codes, horse racing and rock concerts but not at the top
football grounds. I hope MPs of all parties will listen to supporters and make sure
they're there to cast their votes in favour of Mr Godsiff's Bill."

Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association (IMUSA) member Roy Williamson
said, "We've been facing the threat of areas of Old Trafford being closed by the local
council for a while now due to fans standing in seated areas. The answer's simple.
Allow us the choice to sit or stand. Not to allow those to stand who wish to creates a
totally unnecessary divide between supporters. The Football Licensing Authority (FLA)
is trying to deal with the problem of standing in seated areas without addressing the
obvious solution. Safe standing areas in Germany allow ticket prices to be kept
reasonable, making sure the game is accessible to the young and to traditional
supporters who're being priced out of the top games. Can we please have a sane,
reasoned debate on this? The facts show that safe standing areas are both desperately
wanted by supporters and are as safe if not more so than compelling people to sit. I
hope supporters up and down the country will be in touch with their !
MPs about the Bill in the coming week."
