Jon A.S., Auke, List,
I completely agree, that the categories are not the actions or what is acting, but.., just as you put it. Analogously I want to say, that my tenses-proposal also is not the categories themselves, but a way to identify them: If something happens from the past to the present, it happens after 1ns, present to future after 2ns. (actuality), past to future after 3ns. (continuity). Another way of identifying the categories is to look, how much elements are involved in an action: 1, 2, or 3. To have a quality, only one agent is necessary, for a reaction it is 2, and for a mediation 3.
There is always one quibble about my tenses-proposal, that is the object. To have 2ns, it should appear in the present, and be permanent into the future. In a semiosis, a sequence of signs, that what is the dynamic object, obviously pre-exists, so it is from the past. But in the first sign of this semiosis, though it does preexist, it is not denoted before this first sign. It preexists, but not -denotedly- as object. So I think it is ok to say, that an object is playing its role as an object from the present to the future.
But it is another case with the second, third, and so on, sign in the semiosis. The interpretant becomes a sign denoting the same object. So now the object is from the past, and has a permanence into the future. But is that really so? I might as well say, that, when the object is being denoted again, it is deobjectized, and reobjectized for new. Because it might have changed. For example, having started a conversation about precipitation, in the first sign the object may be rain only, in the second sign it may be rain and snow, and in the third sign it may be rain, snow, and hail.
But that was just to advertise my tenses-proposal. Besides that, as I said, it is possible to look, whether it consists of 1, 2, or three agents, or simply the sequence, if it is a first, a second, or a third.
And again, because here in the moment hierarchies are a topic too, I repeat, that my categories-assignment-proposal for them is composition- power- classification. All three assignment methods (tenses, agents numbers, sequence) fit. Sorry for the repitition, but nobody has either disagreed or or agreed with it so far. Doesnt matter, I just do not know whether it has caught any attention yet or not.
Best,
Helmut
Auke, List:
AvB: Re-action suggests an action, and mediation suggests a mediating act.
My point was that the categories are not what is "acting" in either case. Again, they simply identify the irreducible elements of whatever is or could be present to the mind. For example, when we perceive or imagine a process of mediation (3ns), we can prescind the reactions (2ns) that are involved in that process, and further prescind the qualities (1ns) that are involved in those reactions.

Although 'their function in semiosis does not change', might have been less inviting.
You cited Peirce:
"the purest conceptions of them" are phenomenological--namely, "quality, reaction, and mediation" (CP 1.530, 1903; cf. CP 4.3, 1898)
