Re: ARServer 7.0.1 Upgrade Installer

2006-10-13 Thread Shellman, David
Axton,

Thanks for the info. I'll keep this in mind if we upgrade our SUN
servers instead of going to Windows.

Before folks ask, we are looking at moving to Windows for many of the
same reasons that James's is looking at moving to SUN. We have had more
issues with down time since we went into a SUN Cluster than when we ever
had on a stand alone SUN box. Issues have been disk related, human
error, corruption of files for another database that crashed the storage
array, etc. Throw on top of it a very controlling UNIX admin that uses
SOX and Audits as justification for complete control. It took me a
little over 6 months to document a fairly simple 6.3 installation and
create a installation package for them to execute. It's time to move
back to stand alone servers.

Look in the aruser.log file for floating token usage. Depending on
the interval set in the server statistics, it may have not captured
the peak usage.

My guess was the same as LJ's

If con was allowed as a directory or file name in DOS, then the command

copy con A

would evaluate to 2 possible interprtation by the system - 1) to create a file A, or to copy the contents of file con to file A, if there was a file called con within the directory... so at least somebody thinks like me out there :-) I was begining to wonder why it would spit out an error that its a reserved device name..

But maybe the others are right though.. consoles are devices so if its because con represents consoles that we are not allowed to name a file con..

Have a nice weekend guys and thanks for replying to a totally unrelated thread... It wasn't a spam.. just thought it was Friday and since I was curious about this topic thought I'd share it with some of the brains out here on the list...

copy con

when you hit enter it starts recording what is typed on the console into the file...then when you are done writing the file you hit Ctrl-Z and hit enter and the file is saved...not much of a mystery for people involved in puters since the dos days...and BTW...the <>'s around abc.txt are not typed...

Reason being after he sent me that mail I immediatly guessed the reason behind this, and I am willing to bet I am right about it..

Wanted to see if anyone here can figure it out... Try this out..

Try creating a directory or a file (with no extension) named con and it wont let you.. while creating a directory using the GUI it simply wont let you create it (no error displayed) but if you try using DOS it will return an error - invalid name.. Similary if you create a file and try to name it con, it says this name is 'reserved for a device'..

Personally I do not think this is reserved for a device as such. It is reserved for 'something else'. At least thats my guess...

Does anyone know why you cant name a file or directory named con? I have a good guess and am willing to bet I'm right... Just want to compare my guess to that of others around here...

Depends on how slow you draw the 6 in the air, or maybe
I'm not normal (there said it before anyone else

You can also draw the 6 clockwise (I know people that
make their 6s that way.  Start at the top left of the circle part of the 6
and make the circle clockwise. When you get to the starting point continue
upward to make the top.)

Not if you remember that _everything_ has to go under the
\Program Files (x86)\ directory, and if you want it on the D: drive like ours
are installed then you need to create the D:\Program Files (x86)\ directory
manually.

Most of the installers ran fine from other directories (
D:\Install\whatever) or from file space on other servers, but none of the ITSM
or CMDB patches that run from the command line would run properly on the x64
server, anywhere. I ran them from a Win2K server in the same domain/subnet just
fine since they have parameters for server, user, password, top port and connect
like a client.

Installing the CMDB requires that you be logged in to the
server locally, not using a domain account. I probably did the other ITSM apps
the same way, but CMDB required it.

Hi
Joe,

If you
really want a file named con in Windows,
try typing the name as follows:
   press
c
   press
o
   press
n
   press
and hold ALT
   press 2
on the number pad (not the numbers above the alpha section)

   press 5
on the number pad
press 5 on the number pad

   release ALT

This actually
creates a file named con[hard space].  The hard
space is different than a conventional space, so Windows will allow it at the
end of a file name, but it will still display it as if it were a
space.

If you want two
files named con, you can use the same trick as above,
but end with two hard spaces, or a space and a hard space:
   C:\>dir|find "con"   10/13/2006  05:01
PM
0 con     10/13/2006  05:02
PM
0 con

It's because of the old days of DOS. CON is for the console (screen), PRN
for printer, NUL basically means NULL or nothing. Try typing in DIR > PRN
into a command window. The directory listing will print. DIR > NUL will not
show anything. (In the old days programmers would run commands and have the
output go to NUL so that they ran "transparently.")

Looks like con, prn, nul can not be used.

  Now for the real reason:
  http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/fq00-017.mspx

What's this bulletin about?Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-017 announces the availability of a patch
  that eliminates a vulnerability in Microsoft® Windows® 95, Windows 98, and
Windows 98 Second Edition. Under certain circumstances, the vulnerability
could cause affected systems to crash. Microsoft is committed to protecting
customers' information, and is providing the bulletin to inform customers of
the vulnerability and what they can do about it. What causes
the vulnerability? The vulnerability results because of a flaw in
the way Windows 95 and 98 (including Windows 98 Second Edition) parse file
path names. Device names such as COM1, CON or LPT1 are reserved words, and
they can't be used as folder or file names. When parsing a reference to a
path, Windows 95 and 98 check for the presence of a single DOS device name in
the path. If one is found, the path is correctly treated as invalid and an
error is returned. However, neither Windows 95 nor 98 check for multiple DOS
device names. This is the source of the vulnerability. If a read or write
operation is attempted to a path whose name contains multiple DOS device
names, it will cause Windows 95 and 98 to attempt to access invalid resources.
In some cases, the effect of this invalid access would be to cause the
application that supplied the path to hang, but the more likely effect is that
the machine would present a blue debug screen and crash.

It's because of the old days of DOS. CON is for the console (screen), PRN for printer, NUL basically means NULL or nothing. Try typing in DIR > PRN into a command window. The directory listing will print. DIR > NUL will not show anything. (In the old days programmers would run commands and have the output go to NUL so that they ran "transparently.")

Now for the real reason:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/fq00-017.mspx

What's this bulletin about?Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-017 announces the availability of a patch that eliminates a vulnerability in Microsoft® Windows® 95, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition. Under certain circumstances, the vulnerability could cause affected systems to crash. Microsoft is committed to protecting customers' information, and is providing the bulletin to inform customers of the vulnerability and what they can do about it. What causes the vulnerability? The vulnerability results because of a flaw in the way Windows 95 and 98 (including Windows 98 Second Edition) parse file path names. Device names such as COM1, CON or LPT1 are reserved words, and they can't be used as folder or file names. When parsing a reference to a path, Windows 95 and 98 check for the presence of a single DOS device name in the
path. If one is found, the path is correctly treated as invalid and an error is returned. However, neither Windows 95 nor 98 check for multiple DOS device names. This is the source of the vulnerability. If a read or write operation is attempted to a path whose name contains multiple DOS device names, it will cause Windows 95 and 98 to attempt to access invalid resources. In some cases, the effect of this invalid access would be to cause the application that supplied the path to hang, but the more likely effect is that the machine would present a blue debug screen and crash.

We are attempting to implement AREA LDAP so that it can authenticate to
multiple forests, that each have multiple domains. We can get to the
domains within the first forest, but cannot get to the second forest,
when a match is not found in the first forest.

We are using Remedy 6.03 patch 11, Solaris, Unix and Oracle.

Has anyone been successful at implementing AREA LDAP with Multiple
Forests?

Re: Helpdesk 6.0 Support Panel displaying groups I am not a member of.

2006-10-13 Thread Wacholz, Jeanette (Jenni)
We worked through this same issue recently with tech support and the
bottom line answer was "no." We tried a lot of different variations on
the query even though BMC said it couldn't be done and eventually I had
to admit that I couldn't prove them wrong.

Fortunately, we only had 3 group names we had to change. You just have
to make sure that no complete group name is a part of any other group
name. For example, we couldn't have both 'Production Support' and 'IDX
Production Support' because the complete name of one is part of the
other.

All,

I am using ITSM 6.0 Helpdesk. We have created a lot of groups in the
system that are very similar. The Remedy Support Panel is now
displaying groups that individuals are not a member of due to the LIKE
statements. (This happens when I select the Console View: Group)

My question is, is their a way to change the qualification so that we
don't have to change all of the group names?

The qualification is:

((( 'zTmpKeyword' = "MAINHELPDESK" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 4)) OR ((
'zTmpKeyword' =  "MAINCHANGE" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 6)) OR ((
'zTmpKeyword' =  "MAINTASK" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 4))) AND ((
$zTmpShowAssignedReq$ = 'zTmpKeyword') OR ( $zTmpShowAssignedReq$ =
"All"
)) AND ((( $ConsoleViewBy$ = "Myself") AND ( 'Assigned To' = $USER$)) OR
(( $ConsoleViewBy$ = "Group") AND ( 'Assigned To Group+' !=  $NULL$ )
AND ($GROUPS$ LIKE (( "%" + 'Assigned To Group+') + "%" ))) OR ((
$ConsoleViewBy$ = "Group Unassigned") AND ( 'Assigned To' = $NULL$ ))
OR (( $ConsoleViewBy$ = "Date") AND ( 'Requested Completion Date' <=
$zTmpDate1$)) OR ( $ConsoleViewBy$ = "Any"))

Thanks in advance and thank you all for your support in the past.

Hi
Chris,

I
created a join form between the Group and User forms.  Before I could
create the join, this required adding a field to the Group form to store the
string equivalent of the group ID integer, and some additional workflow to
populate the character field.

There
is a thread in the archives titled "Displaying users groups" from
April 2006 that describes the method I used to accomplish this in more detail.

Happy Friday to all,

As I start to play with ServiceDesk, I am starting to find that even by
reading the manual I can find things.

Like what form (if it is a form) controls the out going e-mail messages
that are trigged after a new incident is opened,

Anyone have any ideas what form might hold this data?

Also have a great weekend,

Re: Helpdesk 6.0 Support Panel displaying groups I am not a member of.

2006-10-13 Thread Eric Cleereman (IT)
Hi Jackson,

We had a similar problem. Here's one approach to take care of it:
 - Create a hidden field called AssignedToGroupID on form(s) containing the
records.
 - Create workflow to populate this field for any future records.
 - Populate this field for existing records via SQL, an escalation, whatever
works best for you.
 - Create a hidden temp field on the form containing the table, called
zTmpGroupIDs.
 - Populate this field using an SQL query against USER_X (the User form). The
groups for a given user are stored as Group IDs at the database level, in the
following format:  ID1;ID2;ID3;etc;
 - Change your qualification to:
   (
(('zTmpKeyword'="MAINHELPDESK") AND ('Status Integer'<4))
OR (('zTmpKeyword'="MAINCHANGE") AND ('Status Integer'<6))
OR (('zTmpKeyword'="MAINTASK") AND ('Status Integer'<4))
)
   AND (($zTmpShowAssignedReq$='zTmpKeyword') OR ($zTmpShowAssignedReq$="All"))
   AND (
(($ConsoleViewBy$="Myself") AND ('Assigned To'=$USER$))
OR (($ConsoleViewBy$="Group") AND (
 ('AssignedToGroupID'=$NULL$)
 OR ($zTmpGroupIDs$ LIKE (""+'AssignedToGroupID'+";%"))
 OR ($zTmpGroupIDs$ LIKE ("%;"+'AssignedToGroupID'+";%"))
 )
OR (($ConsoleViewBy$="Group Unassigned") AND ('Assigned To'=$NULL$))
OR (($ConsoleViewBy$="Date") AND ('Requested Completion
Date'<=$zTmpDate1$))
OR ($ConsoleViewBy$ = "Any")
)

This takes advantage of the group IDs always having a semicolon after them. So
while "1000" would be like "100%", "1000;" would not be like "100%;"

The qualification is:

((( 'zTmpKeyword' = "MAINHELPDESK" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 4)) OR ((

'zTmpKeyword' =  "MAINTASK" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 4))) AND ((

OR ( $ConsoleViewBy$ = "Any"))

Hi Chris,
I created a join form between the Group and User forms.
Before I could create the join, this required adding a field to the
Group form to store the string equivalent of the group ID
integer, and some additional workflow to populate the character
field.

There is a thread in the archives titled "Displaying users
groups" from April 2006 that describes the method I used to accomplish this in
more detail.

One thing you might look at would be putting the ODBC users on their RPC thread. I know this won't help with timeouts (maybe if it is Remedy timing out) but at least those users won't be tying up database threads that are being utilized by end users within the application.

Hey all,

We are having an issue with Crystal Reports that are timing out.  They
use the Remedy ODBC driver to get to the DB.

The reporters want to be able to extend the timeout value.  There
isn't time right now to look at making the reports more efficient.  After
contacting Remedy, the best I got was to make changes to the AR.ini file which
may or may not help.

Anyone else fix this problem?

Yes,

Scan through the table for conditions that will cause a record to be
duplicate but make an exception to skip records that have a NULL
value in that field. Then if it finds any match, return the Entry-ID of
that record to a temporary field. If at the end of the search the Temp field is
NULL, you know you haven't found a duplicate. If its not NULL return the
duplicate record error you want to return and prevent the save of that

Re: ARServer 7.0.1 Upgrade Installer

2006-10-13 Thread Axton

I tracked the issue down to the data in the filter_sql table. When
arupora is running, it logs to a file name /var/tmp/arsql.log. By
viewing this file I could see what the last select was and concluded
that the data returned by that select statement was causing the
segfault. I removed all the data from filter_sql (15 records) and the
installer completed successfully.

Hope this helps someone.

Helpdesk 6.0 Support Panel displaying groups I am not a member of.

All,

I am using ITSM 6.0 Helpdesk. We have created a lot of groups in the system
that are very similar. The Remedy Support Panel is now displaying groups
that individuals are not a member of due to the LIKE statements. (This

My question is, is their a way to change the qualification so that we don't

The qualification is:

((( 'zTmpKeyword' = "MAINHELPDESK" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 4)) OR ((
'zTmpKeyword' =  "MAINCHANGE" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 6)) OR ((
'zTmpKeyword' =  "MAINTASK" ) AND ( 'Status Integer' < 4))) AND ((

Happy
Friday the 13th!!!

Has
anybody figured out a simple way to grab the population of groups?

I
want to only query a batch of groups and get the agents therein. Would really
prefer not to have to go through the computed group list and hunt down each
user….

Any
ideas?

Thank You,

Re: ARServer 7.0.1 Upgrade Installer

2006-10-13 Thread Axton

One would think there would have been some type of announcement. I
have received confirmation from BMC that this is the maintenance
release that is supposed to address the unicode upgrade issues.

The problem is that the arupora utility dies due to a segmentation
fault and core dumps. I'm working with BMC to resolve this issue, but
it's rather slow going at this point. I'm hoping someone else in the
community has or will attempt the following and share their
experience:

Upgrade from ARS 6.0.1 to ARS 7.0.1
App Server: SunOS 5.9
Database: Remote Oracle 9i
Oracle Client on App Server: 10.2.0.whatever
Db Charset: UTF-8

I am using the following for the LANG and NLS_LANG on the app server:
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
NLS_LANG=american_america.AL32UTF8

ar_install calls a binary name arupora that is included with the
install files. This program connects to the oracle db directly and
gathers/updates a bunch of data. This program generates a segfault
before it completes.

The script exits with the following text:
Running DB upgrade. This may take several minutes

Yes this works, but ensure you take into
consideration that this will query the table with a match to that field, consider
the QBE settings, and the total record count for the table.

When we do this, we don’t use a
table query, we use direct sql which is better performance for high row count
tables.

Select count(*) from where
 = ‘value’

Then compare the set-fields-returned-value
!= 0 then error

Sure ... You can do a
simple Set Fields action to set a Display Only temp field as an
indicator.  A second filter then checks the indicator to see if the value
exists.

Example

Scenario:
Regular Remedy form called FormA with only default fields (plus a 15 char
display only field called zTmpDupID).  You want to make sure users
don't enter a short description twice.

Submit version

    Filter
1 On Submit

    Action 1:

Set fields Read value from FormA

Set Fields If:  'Short Description' = $Short
Description$

No Requests Match Set to $NULL$

Any Requests Match Use First Matching

    Set zTmpDupID = $Request ID$

Modify version

    Filter
1 On Modify

    Action 1:

Set fields Read value from FormA

Set Fields If:  'Short Description' = $Short
Description$ and 'Request ID' != $Request ID$

No Requests Match Set to $NULL$

Any Requests Match Use First Matching

    Set zTmpDupID = $Request ID$

Filter 2

If zTmpDupID != $NULL$ Show Error to prevent save

Hope this info helps

Re: Duplicate Records

2006-10-13 Thread Carey Matthew Black

You can combine the two Filter #1's below too.
Use the second Set field If: Qualification (include AND 'Request ID'
!= $Request ID$). It will work just as well for Submit as it does
modify.

The basic idea is "Test4Dup" that was published back in the days of
old in an RxPress. ( Circa 91? 92?)

The only "gotcha" is that it does not work for multiple transaction
that are taking place right now. (AKA: before the first transaction is
committed to the RDBMS.) One POSSIBLE way to get around that is to do
a Filter non-phased Push to a second form with data the you would us
in the Test4Dup logic. Then issue a Application-Release-Pending and
have your Test4Dup logic run on the target form for the Push action. I
think that will catch the second record even if the first parent
record is not yet committed to the RDBMS. (But I have not tested that
idea. Bugs may abound...)

Re: Keystroke command

2006-10-13 Thread Eric Cleereman (IT)
Hi Dwayne,

If a menu is attached to a field where the display type is set as Drop-Down
List, clicking the field will cause it to open the menu. If a menu is attached
to a field where the display type is set as Edit or Edit Masked, clicking the
field will set focus to the field without opening the menu.

Re: ARERR 400 - form does not hold a form definition

2006-10-13 Thread Charles Stoddard
Thad,

I'm not sure if this will be the case for you or not, but when we had a similar
problem (I'm not sure if we had the 400 error) it turned out that the time on
the AR server was significantly off from the database. I think it was like
months (we were running on a VM), but once we changed the date, things started
working for us again.

Don't know if it will help, but it's one more thing to look at

Below is the SQL log for when I created the form. The thing I find odd is
that I'm saving the form with a name like "xxxJunk", but the sql shows
"Form07". Indeed, a Form07 is created, although when I open it, the admin
tool has to adjust the fields to "improve the view".

schemaid in the control table was 606 before the save, and it was 607
after, so it looks like that part is working as it should. Do you
guys/gals see anything else in these logs?

Sure ... You can do a simple Set Fields action to set a
Display Only temp field as an indicator.  A second filter then checks the
indicator to see if the value exists.

Example

Scenario:   Regular Remedy form called FormA with
only default fields (plus a 15 char display only field called zTmpDupID).
You want to make sure users don't enter a short description
twice.

Submit version
    Filter 1 On Submit
    Action 1:
    Set
fields Read value from FormA

Set Fields If:  'Short Description' =
$Short Description$

No Requests Match Set to
$NULL$

Any Requests Match Use First
Matching
    Set zTmpDupID = $Request ID$

Modify version
    Filter 1 On Modify
    Action 1:
    Set
fields Read value from FormA

Set Fields If:  'Short Description' =
$Short Description$ and 'Request ID' != $Request ID$

No Requests Match Set to
$NULL$

Any Requests Match Use First
Matching
    Set zTmpDupID = $Request
ID$

Filter 2
If zTmpDupID != $NULL$ Show Error to prevent
save

Hope this info helps
Fred

2006-10-13 Thread Carey Matthew Black

And as an added bonus...

If you also export 'Last modified by' and 'Modified Date' fields then
the change to the record will not update those fields. So the data can
be updated without stomping on those values if you want to via a MERGE
action. ( This however is not possible if you take the workflow
approach as that is a MODIFY action.)

HTH.

This is extremely helpful when we need to make a lot of changes to

Hi Lisa -

Can you tell me how you are able to update through an import? In
reading this post, I'm interested in trying to figure out what you're
doing b/c we have a number of instances where an update through a
straight import would come in handy.

Or - are you importing a file and handling your data matching via
workflow?

Just curious - thx.

Re: ARERR 400 - form does not hold a form definition

2006-10-13 Thread Carey Matthew Black

Thad,

From what I understand about how ARS creates a new form the process is

roughly something like this

get the next schemaId value.
Insert a "form" named "FormN" (01 is the norm, but you must have
01..06 so it went with 07).
Then all the "non-default" properties are set for "Form07" then at the
end a "Rename" is done to move the name from "Form07" to what ever you
called it in the Admin Tool.

I would also try to rename a form and see what happens then too.

And on your dev server (that is working normally) repeat actions there
and compare the SQL logs. That will most likely produce a Red Flag for
what is NOT happening on prod.

The root of this is likely very easy and centered around the "form" meta data.

You might have issues like:
The server things Form01..06 exist but they do not and it chokes
because it tries to update it's cache and fails(something goes bang)
to do so.
Their is a VUI/field definition for an arschemaId that does not
exist and ...bang...

The hard part is you are well beyond what most of us can trouble shot
from this end of emails. :( And your Prod server is where the problem
is, but your Dev server is "Happy".

You also mentioned that your problems started with an import to the
production server. what likely happened is that you tripped over a
failure in ARS to be fully backwards compatible (or some other subtle
thing) that you may not be able to fully duplicate. It might even have
been something like the ARS server lost it's connection to the RDBMS
during the object import and only part of the objects got there. Which
might explain why the server thinks there are Form01..06 out there
somewhere.

I doubt BMC Level 1 Tech support will be of much help, but you should
already be hammering them for help too.

Good luck.

Thad,

My first though would be to turn on SQL logs as you try to create a
new form. Then pick through the log and see what the ARS server is
doing before it gives the error. It may be subtle to find, but I would
hope that the SQL log would show you what is going on.
