It seems that Cisco beta exams are very easy

2000-10-24 Thread joe

I took Cvoice 2.0 (641-647) and CSPFF (9E0-559) beta exams on july 19,
august 1.
I got the score reports this week.

Cvoice 641-647800 (passing score 700)
CSPFF 9E0-559901 (passing score 769)

I do not have any official study material, all I have is to browse CCO
and studied any material related.
I think that I could pass CSPFF only because I had never read 20~30 %
material which appeared on 641-647 test.
Maybe Cisco only counts points which I choice right and doesn't count which
I am wrong. (641-647)
Does any body have the same experience?

Forgot galton password

2000-10-24 Thread John lay

Hi Guys,

I am trying to login to my profile at Galton with no success, it seems that
I forgot the password.

Anyway There is a Help saying

"If you have forgotten your password, you may be able to remember it by
clicking on the "Prompt" button on the previous page."

When I go to the previous page and put the user name I got the following
message.

"You haven't provided a prompt."

Did you face this problem before?

Thanks

Try typing ppp after that the access server accepts the username/password

PPP should start (you see a lot of "garbage" on the screen) then select
continue

You should then be online.

Average Load

2000-10-24 Thread Curtis Call

Is there a way to get the average utilization on an interface (serial) for more than
the default 5 minute period shown by show interfaces? Perhaps if there was a setting
to increase the time period used, or a command that would keep a running tally or even
a way to record the utilization in the syslog every so often. Any ideas on how to do
this without resorting to using a third party application?

Thanks.

I don't know what your problem is getting it to work on Sun but if you go
out to winfiles.com they have some freeware syslog servers "Kiwi Syslog

same as in the below link.

If you think the Boson's are bad wait until the test. Out of the 72
questions, your gonna have about 50 where you need to read those scenario's
so plan on utilizing the full 2 hours for the test. It was, by far, the test

2000-10-24 Thread Ed Moss

I am working through Caslow's Bridges Router and Switches book and I am
trying to get a firm understanding of frame-relay.

I have generally recreated the lab on page 126 with the minor changes of
adding another router and changing addresses. For those without the book
(which is very good by the way) this is frame on physical interfaces in a
hub and spoke configuration.

The hub can ping all spokes, and each spoke can ping the hub. However,
spokes can not ping each other until the 'frame-relay map ip" statement is
added to point to each spoke.

Everything can now ping everything else. Now we save the configs and
reload.

Since map statements have not been added on the spokes to point to the hub
(since they were originally learned dynamically) I expect that dynamic
inverse arp to be disabled, and there will be no dynamic entries on the
spokes for the same protocol and the same dlci.

This is not the case in my lab here is the relevant part of the config
on one spoke, and the results of 'show frame-relay map'

interface Serial1
 ip address 192.168.14.2 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation frame-relay
 frame-relay map ip 192.168.14.3 201
 frame-relay map ip 192.168.14.4 201
 no frame-relay inverse-arp

Router2#sho frame-relay map
Serial1 (up): ip 192.168.14.1 dlci 201(0xC9,0x3090), dynamic,
  broadcast,, status defined, active
Serial1 (up): ip 192.168.14.3 dlci 201(0xC9,0x3090), static,
  CISCO, status defined, active
Serial1 (up): ip 192.168.14.4 dlci 201(0xC9,0x3090), static,
  CISCO, status defined, active

Can someone explain why this is happening? (also explain how disabling
frame-realy inverse arp works since I get similar results).

Thanks
Ed

Re: ISL Trunk on a 2500

2000-10-24 Thread Russell Lusignan

There are no FE interfaces that are avaiable for
the 2500's..  if you want to route between the VLANs, the easiest way is to
connect a router to each VLAN via the Ethernet interface, connect those 2
routers together with a back-to-back DCE/DTE cable on the serial interfaces.
Enable a routing protocol and assuming you have numbered your subnets properly,
then anything on those two vlans can be routed...

You could even hook the 3rd router to a 3rd vlan
and connect it's serial port to one of the other 2500s... then you can router 3
subnets between 3 routers..

Hope that helps

2511 Flash Memory Question

2000-10-24 Thread Tom Pruneau

Greetings All

I have a 2511 with 4 MB of flash in it. I need to upgrade the IOS needs
7MB. I tried canabalizing another 2511 I had and adding it's 4MB to the 1st
routers 4MB making what I believed to be 8MB. But when I tried to tftp the
new image over I still got an error saying not enough memory, and yes I had
opted to erase the flash first. When I went and looked at the flash the
router saw it as two 4MB cards instead of 1 8MB.

What do I need to do to get the flash blended together to act as 1 8MB?

Thanks

VLANs

2000-10-24 Thread Roan, Wayne

Group,

I have a Cisco 3548 XL with two VLANs on it (VLAN 1 and VLAN2).
Some of the ports on the switch are set to multaccess ports for access to
both VLANs. This setup works fine for about a day and then the computers on
these multaccess VLAN ports can not talk with the main VLAN1, but can talk
to VLAN2. After about a week, everytime a computer reboots, it can not
login to the domain because the domain controllers are on VLAN1. If I reset
the VLAN ports, everything is fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Wayne

VLSM Problem

2000-10-24 Thread Byerly, Ted

Ok at the risk of being flamed I will post this question. We have
implemented a VLSM and also have some subnets left over from our previous
config. We are having intermittent problems reaching hosts both within and
outside the vlsm. During troubleshooting if I ping a client by IP I get a
time out error, if I try from another machine on the same or different
subnet it also times out. But going to a third client , they are able to
ping this machine. This occurs to different machines at different times and
different subnets. The client is functioning properly for the user.

My major question is are there known problems with vlsm and connectivity
issues or could our router be not configured properly. I am the lowly
server guy and the "network" guy refuses to believe the problem is related
to vlsm, however we have never experienced this before

Most times that I've seen this type of thing, it ends being a mis-configured
subnet mask on the remote workstation. Verify that the machine that you are

Re: Inverse Mask

2000-10-24 Thread J Rowley

It represents the netmask (255.248.0.0) for the network. The easiest way
to get from an inverse mask to a regular netmask is like this:

255.255.255.255 fill 'er up
  - 000.007.255.255 subtract the inverse mask
---
255.248.000.000 real netmask

So, if you have a 0.7.255.255 inverse mask, it equates to 255.248.0.0.
Likewise, if you had 0.0.15.255, the mask would be 255.255.240.0.

You can also take the normal mask and get the inverse mask by doing the
opposite.

255.255.255.255
  - 255.248.000.000
---
000.007.255.255

isl trunk on 6509

2000-10-24 Thread whitaker

I  was trying to set up an ISL trunk on my
gigabit fiber link, but it responded that it was only able to run in nonegotiate
mode.  Since this is going between two 6509s gigabit fiber link, I was
never able to exchange VTP information between the two in nonegotiate mode, and
it wouldn't let me switch it to anything else.  I now have a trunk running
across one of the 10/100 switch module ports.

Is this a limitation of the gigabit fiber
links?  Or is there something I'm missing here?

Most times that I've seen this type of thing, it ends being a mis-configured
subnet mask on the remote workstation. Verify that the machine that you are

Re: VLSM Problem

2000-10-24 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Ted you cant troubleshoot vlsm without configs.
Some things to remember are subnets are different networks, and need a
router.
VLSM is just a way to effectively use available address space. But they are
still subnets and need to be routed.
1. Find out if you can ping local addresses.
2. Find out if you can ping remote addresses and which ones.
2a. Routes have to be coming and going.
3. Also which type of routes do you have. Static/Default/Dynamic
4. Which type of routing protocols are you using. Distance Vector won't
work.
5. What do you care! If you are just the "Server Guy" if your services are
running then your done. Let the "Networking Guy" figure it out.
You ain't getting paid to do it. We on the list are not getting paid to
trouble shoot major VLSM problems either. This is more a group study/help
site.

what does the 7 represent or specifiy for the mask.

You can practice your BGP with as little as 2 2501 routers connected

shouldn't be) connected to the internet, feel free to inject as many routes

RE: W2K Radius

2000-10-24 Thread SINEATH, JOSEPH E (AIT)

You need to set up the Internet Authentication Service (IAS) under W2K. It
supports Cisco RADIUS, as well as many other features. Simply define your
NAS (router) as a client, give it a key, and you should be OK. You will need
to unselect MS-CHAP, which is the default. Then all you have to do is use
the "Grant Dialin Permission" on your use accounts to enable.

would be? I figured a simple upgrade shouldn't change anything since my

I agree more or less with the below, and although I have not had this
experience, I have heard of some people having os specific issues with non
classful netmask boundaries. This could be a routing thing if for
example you are trying to use rip v1 an an igp with a classless
network. You and your network guy need to talk.

RE: 2511 Flash Memory Question

2000-10-24 Thread Jason Baker

Hi Tom,

In your config you will see a line io mem 2 4 4 or something similar (awhile
since i have done this )
simply re-enter this line with a no in front of it.
Which means you have 2 4 meg patitions of flash memory.

To create one partition of 8 enter.
no io mem 2 4 4

Subject: 2511 Flash Memory Question

Greetings All

I have a 2511 with 4 MB of flash in it. I need to upgrade the IOS needs
7MB. I tried canabalizing another 2511 I had and adding it's 4MB to the 1st
routers 4MB making what I believed to be 8MB. But when I tried to tftp the
new image over I still got an error saying not enough memory, and yes I had
opted to erase the flash first. When I went and looked at the flash the
router saw it as two 4MB cards instead of 1 8MB.

What do I need to do to get the flash blended together to act as 1 8MB?

Thanks

Do you know any shortcut to solve this kind of problem:

Implement an access list to block the odd numbers of 255.248.0.0

Re: CDP and LS-1010

2000-10-24 Thread Robert Padjen

ATM does not support ATM. This was a feature that was
hoped for in 12.0, but it never came to product. At
this time it is the exception to the SNAP supported
protocols basis for CDP. I presumed that we were
talking about the ASP Ethernet port - if you are
looking for CDP over ATM it will be a hard look and an
unproductive one. :(

If Yes .. is it true that a person how Pass CCNA,

can he have the CCDP "waved" or both the CCNP and the CCDP ? .. for the

Q4) Anyone who have a good drawing skills "have
some good CAD skills ex:Autocad ver 9 to 2000 !! .." can this help him in his

Q5) I am working on the CCDA right now, but I did
not know why is the Deign track "CCDA, CID exam" is hard from the other support
"CCNA, CCNP" .. !!  is it the Case study stuff !!
As I can see no commands is need in the CCDA
(DCN Cisco book) is it the same with the CCDP and CCIE Design track .. But in
the Lab exams there are some names for routers .. any one take the CCIE Desing

Q6) About the CCIE world wide any categories for
there numbers "ex: How many CCIE WAN, CCIE Design ..etc" I say about 35% to 40%

Re: HP OpenView and CISCO

HPOV NNM has a filter file, you would add a "discovery filter" to that file,
and then configure NNM to use that filter. Kinda like an access list.
(sorta)

you can filter on all kinds of different attributes.
node type
ip address
node name

some companies (like one I know very well) use an inclusive filter and tell
NNM exactly which nodes they want to manage.

I'd love to go on, if you want to continue this discussion off line...

Or... .there is an email list server call OVFORUM that this would be better
suited for.

Re: PIX question***************

2000-10-24 Thread Bob

Hello:

The PIX allows by default, everything going from a higher security level,
(Inside=100, DMZ=50, Outside=0), to a lower security. Unless you have
changed
this then your outbound packets are probably fine but when that one external
address tries to respond to the internal address on a high port# it can't.
If this is the case make sure you have a conduit allowing access from the
external address to the internal address on whatever port the application
requires.

If your tftp server is not at same network of your
router , you can use ip default-gateway, in order to reach the TFTP server. So,
you'll be able to do the download.

Re: P.I.X

2000-10-24 Thread Bob

Actually 5.1(x) and up don't fit on a floppy, you need rawrite.exe, the
file, 'bh511.bin' and the image file. Run the rawrite utility and specify
the file as
bh511.bin, this will create a temp image with tftp capabilities. Insert the
disk, reboot and follow the directions to tftp the image onto the pix.

A designer should be logical, analytical, and able to spend lots of quiet
time thinking before implementing. (Some people aren't good at this! &;-)
He or she should be aware of the technical details of many different
solutions and be able to select the right solutions after figuring out what
problems need solving.

Skills include analyzing business and technical requirements,
characterizing the performance of the existing network using network
management and protocol analysis tools, figuring out typical traffic flows
and loads (not easy on most networks!), developing a topological view of an
internetwork, designing addressing solutions that conserve addresses and
support summarization, selecting products for implementation, designing
wiring schemes, testing the implementation, etc. (See the Table of Contents
of my book for my opinion of what a designer should be able to do. &;-)

Network architect and network engineer are often other names for network
designer. These are often the most senior-level people at companies. In
some companies the network architects have formal PhD-level training in
computer science, mathematics, queuing theory etc. This isn't always the
case, of course, but at large ISPs and many universities it's true.

Usually a network architect has had many years experience in operations and
is well aware of configuration commands that will make the designs work.

It is not true. You need to know the commands for the lab part of the test.

To become a CCDP you have to take CCDA, CCNA, Routing exam, Switching exam,
Remote Access exam, and CID. To become CCIE you have to take a written test
and a 2-day excruciatingly difficult hands-on lab test.

The CCIE exams are managed by a different department at Cisco than the
Career Certifications. Despite some Cisco marketing material, there really
isn't a stair-step relationship between Cisco Career Certifications and the
CCIE program. Most people prefer to take the other exams first to get some
practice, but it's not required. If you're a hot shot, it makes sense to go
for the CCIE level first, since that's the most respected.

It could help. Most of the network design tools support drawing packages
that are pretty simple though. Figuring out what to put on the drawing is
the hard part!

I think most CCIEs are R/S. My guess is the number is more like 80 %. Only
a guess though.

So that's my opinion anyway! I think it would be great if more people took
the design tests and if more employers expected the design certifications.
The idea that surfaces every so often that these tests are easier or less
technical is based on false assumptions. Which is easier, to operate a car
or to design a car?

Re: Possible phony CCIE

2000-10-24 Thread Jack Walker

Please give us a break. There are 4 CCIE certifications, why?

I would assume a R/S CCIE does not know anyting about 8600 is acceptable,
right?
So you ask him a bug about Checkpoint, why not Windows 98, Linux or tons of
those bugs in IE or Outlook?
Even if it is something relates to R/S, but the guy may spend 12 project on
an VoIP project, and did not know anything about a new PIX, so what? You do
not expect people work 10 hours in the office and read the news, releases
and bugs on CCO everynight, do you?

You should ask John Chambers and see if he knows a bug in checkpoint, it is
really amasing.

vs frame relay.

It seems that most favor frame-relay over leased-line because
of cost, no one compare their merits. In my paper, I presume
that the cost is the same for a full-T1 leased-line and a full-T1
frame-relay (port/CIR) connection between two sites. The plan
is to send video, voice and data across the connection. What
are the merits of one over the other?

I have considered the constant signal required for controlling
the voice PBX lines. I picked the full-T1 CIR for frame relay to
eliminate the burst problem. How should I compare the
dedicated channel on the lease line to something equivalent
on the frame relay?

I am looking for some input, if you have any thanks in advance
for your input. If not please refrain from flaming, thanks.

multiple PRI dialup

2000-10-24 Thread SH Wesson

I have a central site with two routers each with a PRI. I have numerous
remote sites with BRI dialing into the PRI as dial backup only.
I would like to set it up such that when the T1 link goes down at the remote
site the BRI ISDN initiates dialing to the PRI for backup. What I want to
do is set it up such that it will dial the first PRI at the central site and
if that is busy it will dial the second PRI. How do I go about doing this
so that it will dial (maybe randomly) either PRI and if one PRI is down or
busy, it will dial the other PRI automatically. Thanks.

RE: Online training

I don't know about the CBT's but I heard www.globalknowledge.com is a great
school. They offer both online and class room training.
