Stus-List Using a hammer drill to remove corroded fastener
When I removed the spinnaker car T-track I had much the same problem. I started with a test to see if any of the fasteners ( 5/16 SS ) would come out by hand with a screwdriver, no such luck. The next step was getting a bit of penetrating oil to seep in, repeated applications over a few weeks. I noticed that the slot size and the screwdriver blade was not a good match, ended up visiting a few hardware stores until I could get a blade that needed a light tap to firmly fit into the screw. With two people, one person holding the screwdriver in and the second using a wrench to turn it, we tested the screws again. Nothing would budge. I used a high heat gun to warm up the screw and area, then a can of cold blast to chill just the screw to create some thermal shock and get some penetrating oil in. No success either. So I used a hand impact driver and three pound hammer to remove the 27 screws. Most were so tight that even when 5 - 6 full turns out they would not move with a screwdriver. I did also notice that none of the penetrating oil ever did get to were it would help. Ended up clamping a visegrip around the screws once they were far enough out and rotating that with two hands. Amazingly none broke. You mention adding a T-track for a whisker pole. At least on the 30-1 there is not much adjustment required in board for a whisker pole, normally goes out above the lifelines and level with the clew. You may get away with a simple ring. Using a spinnaker and pole does require adjustment. I found that T-track to be pretty stiff once the pole had loaded up so I switched it to a captive ball track. Stus-List Where to put the solar vent 29-2
The PO put a large solar vent in the small opening hatch in the center of the cabin top. Works really well in this location but it blocks the hatch opening handle and you cannot open this hatch anymore. I want to move the vent to a location on the starboard side and behind the mast and just in front of the deck organizer. This would allow me to restore the hatch plastic and be able to open the hatch. This project is on the never ending to do list. Best regards, Bob Hickson, P. Stus-List Replacing the Overhead Panels on a 37+
Listers, I've purchased a bunch of lights (LED under-kitchen-cabinet ones) to be mounted in those overhead panels much like Ken Heaton has on his boat. But, I'd prefer to go with something white instead of the teak-like ones that Ken has. Does anyone have a good suggestion on what kind of material would be best? I want something lightweight so it can stay up with velcro, but not too flimsy so I can mount these lights in them. 1/4 star board? Any other suggestions? Also, I know Ken already sent around a photo of the aft cabin during our whose-boat-design-is-better chest-thumping email chain, but I had to include a photo of mine too, with, of course, a custom blanket :-) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15162917/Personal/blanket.jpg All the best, Edd Edd M. Joel - Bigger hammer? I don't mean to be flippant, but sometimes just banging the living heck out of something with a hammer really works. I keep a huge (like the biggest I have ever seen) flat blade screwdriver on board. I've had deck fittings stick, and the spanner wrench just jumps out of the holes. I've stuck that big screwdriver in the slot, and clamped a crescent wrench down as tight as I can, and start tapping on the end of the wrench with a hammer. Start with light taps, and then when you get really frustrated just whale away. I have found two of the same sized allen wrenches to be a really effective alternative to a spanner. Choose the size of allen wrench that fits the holes tightly. Short legs in the holes, long legs together and resting on the opposite short leg. Wire tire together for added stability. Add a long screwdriver or other pry instrument and you are set. Re: Stus-List Primary winches for MkII 27'
Your current winches are probably Barient 18s, at least that is what was original on my boat. I looked long and hard at the Anderson 28st winches and I agree that they are a good fit for the CC27. A Barient 19st is pretty much an 18 that is self tailing, but almost impossible to find now. In the end I bought a couple of used Barient 21-30st winches but only because they were way cheaper than a new pair of Andersons. I have not found the larger diameter to be of any particular advantage, and there seems to be a greater tendency for over-rides, but self tailing was the feature I was after and I like them for that. Re: Stus-List Primary winches for MkII 27'
My 25 has Barient 22 2-speed primaries. 16s seem pretty small for your 27. One speed 16s were the winches on the Rhodes 19 daysailors I used to sail out of Burnham Harbor in Chicago. The Power ratio for the Barient 22 is reportedly 39, and the chart I have shows the Harken, Lewmar, and Anderson 40ST as the appropriate replacement. Barient 21s have a power ratio of 30, and suggested replacement is Harken and Lewmar 30 or Anderson 28. Barient 17s can be replaced by Harken or Lewmar 16s, and Barient 18s by a Lewmar 24 (can't say I've ever seen one of these). The Arco website seems to suggest a power ratio of around 30 for a boat your size, so the Anderson 28ST may be appropriate. Re: Stus-List Primary winches for MkII 27'
Sam - You're lucky to have a foresail trimmer, my foresail trimmer is the same guy that is doing the main sail trim, and the helming, and operating the engine, and hoisting the sails, and getting the boat to and from the dock, i.e. me. I don't have an autohelm, nor even a wheel brake, so something easy to operate is my primary need as I almost exclusively single-hand (quite literally). Rick - it sounds like you've sailed some nicely over-winched boats, my 24' had Barient 12s if I recall correctly, and they were fine on a boat that size. Steve - they must have put bigger winches on later boats, I checked today and they are definitely 16s on there. I might pull the trigger on a pair of shiny stainless Andersons if they physically fit, I have to get the measurements. It's only money *sigh*. Cheers, Paul. On my CC 35, I have one fresh water tank under the port settee. It holds 28 gallons. The boat specs say she carries 40 gallons. I wonder if there was another tank under the dinette. Stus-List Yanmar starting
Hey everyone. My Yanmar 1GM10 is slowly getting more and more difficult to start. With full battery charge, good ground and contact, I'm finding the only way to get the starter to spin is to give quick taps to the start button. If I hold it, it just saps the power system and everything shuts down briefly. Is this a sign of the starter becoming weak? Re: Stus-List Yanmar starting
Yes, probably the starter. It could be a couple of repairable things though. I think the most likely is the brushes and commutator. Brushes are pretty easy to replace and the commutator can be polished up. The circuit between the brushes and commutator needs to be solid for the solenoid to have enough current to pull the fork that throws the drive gear into the flywheel. If you want to save a buck or are in dire need you can disassemble and repair the starter but for the time and effort required it is probably better to have it rebuilt or replaced. The wife and I were in a foreign Spanish port when the starter on the boat we were chartering failed. We managed to disassemble the whole starter and cleaned out all the carbon dust and dirt. We cleaned the commutator with the only thing we had, balsamic vinegar. The brushes were worn and needed replaced but the cleaning managed to get us started. You might also check the quality of the connections and wires powering your starter.
