[karmic upgrade] flashplugin-installer creates bad symlink (amd64)

Status in “flashplugin-nonfree” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: flashplugin-installer

I just upgraded from jaunty to karmic by running 'update-manager -d'.

Observed behavior: the non-free Adobe flash plugin disappeared from my
firefox. 'apt-get install --reinstall flashplugin-installer' seemed to
complete without error, but my firefox still had no idea about the
existence of any flash plugin -- it didn't show up on about:plugins,
  etc.

  Underlying cause:
Looking in /usr/share/ubufox/plugins, there is a symlink
  npwrapper.libflashplayer.so -
/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
  However, /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so does not
exist. The installer seems to have placed that file in
/var/lib/flashplugin-installer instead. (I.e., the symlink should point to
/var/..., not /usr/...)

Running 'cd /usr/share/ubufox/plugins sudo ln -sf /var/lib
/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so .' seems to fix the
problem, which is useful as a workaround, and as confirmation that the
  symlink is, indeed, the problem.

  Please fix, kthx.

  This is on x86-64.

Bug description:
I suppose it's a cdrecord problem, although it is also encountered in
  nautilus-cd-burner.

  Problem:
It is impossible to burn a cd-rw with nautilus. It opens druid if empty cd-rw
is
inserted, but reports an error. However it is possible to burn a cd-rw with
  cdrecord (with different frontends).
It is impossible to erase a cd-rw with cdrecord (CLI or with frontend like
xcdroast). However, it is possible to erase a cd-rw with cdrdao.

Note: Added [kernel] tag as the SCSI blank command is perfectly OK
and as this problem is only present on Linux. It seems that the Linux
kernel modifies the SCSI cdb before sending it ti the drive. This explains why
a perfectly correct SCSI command will get an error Illegal Field in CDB.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 16128] Re: Wide color channels in Gimp

--

Title:
  Wide color channels in Gimp

Status in The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP):
  Fix Released
Status in “gimp” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
After discussing with some graphics people in the community, it has come to my
attention that Gimp only supports 8 bits per color channel (bpc), totalling 32
bits RGBA. Architecturally, Gimp is not easily expanded to wider color
channels
such as 16 or 32 bpc; however, it is possible. Previously, some developers
created a program called cinepaint, a Gimp fork that supported 16 and 32 bpc
color spaces. Unfortunately the project eventually halted and does not
support
the range of features of newer Gimp.

  * http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/

Although humans can't tell the difference between 8bpc and 16bpc, mathematical
algorithms can. In particular, certain mathematics used to touch up images or
blend colors can result in a visual artifact called banding, where visible
differences in lumance appear in the image where there previously were none,
often resulting in what look like bands of areas with different gammas or
brightnesses. To prevent this, the color space can be increased so that the
bands occur over ranges so small that when reduced back to 8 bpc color space,
they are lost with the extra information in the other 8 or 24 bits. In other
words, rounding is saved for the end of the process.

To achieve the best effect, images should be stored and operated on in a full
range color space. Rounding down to an 8 bpc color space should only be done
when the image is finally exported to a standard 24 or 32 bit format such as
PNG, MNG, or JPEG. This allows the results of previous large color space
operations (i.e. image effects such as blurring and glass lenses) to retain
their extra information so that more effects can be added on top of them
without
visible artifacts, further reducing or even eliminating banding.

This bug should not be a high priority, as it would require the Ubuntu
developers to massively patch the internal architecture of Gimp, and then to
convince the Gimp mainline developers to accept the patches. Historically,
the
Gimp mainline developers apparently have inverted interest in (i.e., will
fight
against) widened color spaces; however, professional graphics artists
understand
that at least 10 bpc of color space (i.e. 40 bit instead of 32) are needed to
produce quality images, and hence have been moving off Gimp and onto
Photoshop.
Bigger is better; even high-end 3D graphics cards operate in 128 bit color
(32bpc) (as noted in John Carmack's .plan file from when he was writing
Doom3).

Firefox language settings incorrect for Aus NZ users

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I use a fully updated Dapper Beta.

The languages which are in the list by default in Firefox are en-us and en.
For New Zealand they should be (in this order):
  en-nz
  en-gb
  en
  en-us

Perhaps the System - Administration - Languages can be used to
prioritise languages etc. to improve the 'one setting, one place'
philosophy which Ubuntu is attempting (for example with OOo
localisations etc.). Even if the system setting was only used if a
profile did not already exist it would be a great start.

Two approaches could be taken to this:
   * the user could manually rank variants of 'English' so that I could set
(in System - Administration - Languages) the above rankings; or
   * New Zealand users have the above languages set up for them; or
   * a section in the languages could allow the ranking manually *and* they
default to the above for New Zealanders.

Obviously I would like to see the same philosophy applied to all
languages. One advantage in doing this may be that programs
(synaptic?) could install alternative dictionaries etc. if your first
  choice was missing.

  Questions or clarifications, just ask.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 58941] Re: omit Album information for files w/o album information

2012-10-01 Thread Thomas Hotz
** Description changed:

- (edgy amd64)
-
- Severity: wishlist
-
Currently, when a new song starts which does not have an Album entry, the
notification bubble and the track information bar say:
- title by artist from Unknown
+ title by artist from Unknown
I'd say it would look nicer if Rhythmbox would just omit the from Unknown
(or whatever it says with LANG=C) if there is no Album tag (empty string or
only nonprintable chars) in the file.

  Thanks,

  Martin

This requires enabling general.autoScroll in about:config, and probably
disabling middlemouse.paste and middlemouse.contentLoadURL

The best way to reproduce it is to open many tabs of different
websites (~30), and look at the autoscroll hover cursor in each. Some
will have the correct move cursor (which looks like a hand in the
Ubuntu Human theme), and some will have the incorrect resize up
  cursor.

  Go to any page online.

In the printer box, there should be a checkbox that says Print to file,
check it.
  Click the Print button
Give the file any name (e.g foo.ps)
Browse to a folder you do not have write permissions on such as /root or /etc
  Click save
Progress bar will start and end by but no file is written and no

Status in X.Org X server:

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-savage” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-savage

It seems that the S3 savage driver for Xorg has a hardcoded limitation
regarding its Xv functionality. If a video is wider than 800 pixels wide, then
the rest of the screen has a pink color. For example, my 480p video that is
853x480, has 53 pixels rendered as pink color on the right side of the screen,
resulting in a vertical pink banner. Same happens no matter what media player I
use, as it's an Xv driver bug, not a media player one. Some facts:
  1. It only happens when Xv is used. Other transports work without this bug,
but without Xv you don't want to watch HD video anyway because it is too slow
without acceleration.
  2. When I grab a screenshot from the framebuffer, the pink banner is not
there. It only renders the pink vertical banner in the screen, not in the
framebuffer.
  3. DRI driver is loaded, but not working (bug #99251)

  3) Log out

When you type in protocol which cannot be handled by firefox, but is
registered to Gnome system, Firefox does nothing. Loading text is
shortly shown in the status bar, after which it turns to (Untitled)
  blank page.

  Suggestion (in this preference order):

  1. Open handlers in corresponding application (e.g. nautilus)

  2. Show an error page

  3. Show an error dialog

Title:
liferea does not preserve open tabs across sessions

Status in “liferea” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: liferea

When using tabs in liferea, all tabs are closed when the session
  is restarted.

  Steps to Replicate:
  1) Open a feed.
  2) Open an article in a tab (simplest to middle-click the headline)
  3) Log out
  4) Log in
  5) Open liferea

  Observed Behaviour:
Liferea exits with no message, apparently saving state in the gnome
session. When reopened, liferea shows the default view, and no tabs are
present.

  Expected Behaviour:
Liferea exists with no message, saving state in the session. When
reopened, Liferea displays the last open view, and all tabs are present from
the last session.

Status in X.Org X server:

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-savage” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

The PPP dialer wvdial does not allow usage of blank username /
passwords. The file wvdial.conf is used to specify the ID/pw for a
dialup connection, however, the actual dialer refuses to dial if the
Username and Password fields are intentionally left blank.

This might be a problem for a lot of people, for instance, those using
GSM cellphones to connect to the internet via GPRS (as in my case). In
such cases, the phone used to dial the access number (*99# on most
carriers/phones) is used to identify the user account, hence no ID/pw
is needed. If any random ID/pw is set in wvdial.conf, the provider
drops connection. If no id/pw is set, wvdial refuses to dial!

Please allow specifically blank id/pw to be used.

This was tested on Dapper, cannot test on Edgy yet.

Title:
Take Screenshot feature doesn't implement Save dialog properly

Status in gnome-utils - GNOME Desktop Utilities:
  Confirmed
Status in “gnome-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hit the PrintScreen key in the Ubuntuized GNOME 2.10.0. Up comes a save dialog
with a preview of the screenshot. There are also two fields, Name and Save
in
Folder. Try typing a name *and* path in the Name field (e.g.,
~/Screenshot.png). Click OK. Then look for that screenshot file. It will
have
disappeared -- the save will have failed silently.

Other GNOME2 apps don't behave this way. Evolution doesn't, for instance, and
Firefox (which I believe is using GNOME2, but I'm not sure) doesn't either.
I'm
surprised that the save dialog isn't more standardized, such that it would be
impossible to use non-standard behavior like the Take Screenshot applet does.

Firefox language settings incorrect for Aus NZ users

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Since installing Dapper Flight 6 last week, I've been plagued by an
extremely slow Firefox, though this problem was not present in my
previous Dapper install that had, at one point, been Breezy.

When running top, I've found that Xorg tends to take up 60%+ of the
CPU with the remaining percentage being devoted to Firefox, or
  sometimes vice versa.

This prompted me to edit my xorg.conf.

I found that my default config file listed the Device Driver as 'nv'
instead of 'nvidia' as it always had been on my machine before I
  installed Flight 6.

  Reading advice in
  https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/32561 ( also
prompted me to add MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 to /etc/environment.

I don't report bugs very often, so I'm not sure on the policy of
providing a fix for a problem within the main bug report. :P

Dapper Drake. Play a song with xmms and decrease the volume in XMMS until the
song is barely audible (e.g. volume 7%). Close xmms. Open a movie with totem:
you find out that the volume slider in totem is already at max and cannot be
increased, but the volume is still too low. Then you try to increase the master
volume (the applet on gnome-panel) but you discover it is also at max. So you
get stuck: there is no apparent way to play the movie at decent volume. You
_could_ launch xmms again and increase the volume slider, but a newbie would
not discover that or accept it anyway.
In short, it seems the volume control in apps like XMMS and mplayer takes
over totem's slider, and causes it to malfunction.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package
'gstreamer'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

Feature Request: Allow Firefox to work on multiple X11 screens

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  Confirmed
Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in “firefox-3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

This is a feature request bug.

The ability to use Firefox on a multi-screen configuration would be
useful. However, it is not possible at this time (at least with a
single profile). This is also the case for multiple X servers, not
  just screens.

Ideally, Firefox should be able to be run anywhere, at any time. I
would imagine that it should be able to avoid clobbering its data
files if multiple instances of the browser would be required to
address this issue, but I would also think that it would be possible
to have a single Firefox instance connected to multiple X11 DISPLAYs
  (e.g., :0.0, :0.1, or even :0.0 and :1.0) for the same user.

Evince (in Feisty) appears to have this feature, and there are other
programs that are multi-screen friendly. Is it possible to make
  Firefox one of them?

  Thanks!

Bug description:

Using firefox 2.0.0.1 on Ubuntu edgy.

If I upload a PDF file to some site using firefox, the receiver gets
the file and an associated mimetype of application/binary rather than
  the correct application/pdf

(btw, note that konqueror uploads the pdf file with the correct
  mimetype).

I do not know if the above is a problem with edgy firefox or with
upstream firefox, but I suspect the first.

The bug seems minor, but is in fact critical to those needing to
upload conference papers or journal articles to publishers' web sites.
In fact, the latter often refuse the file if the file does not appear
  to be PDF.

This bug is linked to an older one I filed, ability to print several
  images (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/80220).

If several selected images could be printed from a single print
dialog, it would be great to have some dialog options like the ones
  photo-grid-print offers (http://code.google.com/p/photo-grid-print/),
this is, number of rows and columns on a page, and the ability to
repeat a single photo to fill the page, which would be extra-useful
for tasks such as printing I.D. Pictures.

Please see how photo-grid-print handles these options in the following
screenshot:
