are you still under the Apple Care Blanket?
If not can you get one?
If so, get it; wait a month and send it in.
Will cost you around 300$ (Apple Care)
And then Apple will, fix or repair it for free.
Not a bad deal

went to put in a blank CD to backup some data with Toast, and got an
unhappy surprise: the disk went in fine, but then the drive clunked
twice, and spat the disk out. I tried several other disks --
commercial, self-burned, DVD -- same trick every time: full pull-in
insert, two big clunks and disk eject.

I reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU, did the Force Quit, Force Shutdown,
Control-Command-Power start -- all the Apple remedies. I'm currently
trying to find my original Hardware Diagnostic disks, but if the drive
won't accept any other disks, I'm justifiably concerned that it won't
accept the diagnostic disks either.

Apple support quoted me a replacement drive price of around $1000
(minus labor), and that' doesn't make me too happy. Any
suggestions/previous experience/mantras, etc.?

Any help greatly appreciated.

One other way, actualy that i use is Stuffit Deluxe 8.0 or above. In

Next time you launch your Apple mail it will display receipts .

Andre,

I know AOL offers a form of delivery confirmation, but it is
limited to mail between AOL users, and not the internet at large. In
fact, as far as I know, internet mail systems have no mechanism for
such feedback, and since it's all FREE mail, there is really no one
who's responsible for mail delivery.
Eudora Netscape/Mozilla at least - don't know about others - allow
for receipt confirmations - but require an email client at the far end
that also supports it, plus the user at the far end has to have
his/her mailer set so it at least gives the option of acknowledging
receipt. (I remember the prefs of at least one of those clients gives
the options do not respond, ask before responding, or always
respond to return receipt requests - always respond is bad because it
could confirm your address to spammers, but if they have it set to do
not respond you won't get the receipt even if the message is
received.)

I tested this a while ago sending from Eudora to a church address that
distributes to 5 or 6 people. I got acknowledgments from the Netscape
user someone who gets her mail at work. No response from any of the
AOL users, so I assume their client doesn't support it.

Mail does not appear to include this option.

In Eudora I believe it's the RR button at the top of a compose
window.

Too long since I used Netscape to remember.

Laurent, excuse me for getting on the subject, but i have had a

proper battery on top of it they will be glad to give you some tip as
to how to change it and reset (case being) the Cuda.

Hello Listers,

I suspect the PRAM battery has failed on my WallStreet 233 mhz
revised model with 512k cache.
The date keeps on needing to be reset every time I bootup. On my
desktop Mac this is normally corrected with a new PRAM battery which
I have fitted my self.
I have checked in many books to find what a PowerBook PRAM battery
looks like and where it is fitted inside but with out any luck.
Could someone point me in the direction for this information, and
what type of battery and cost could I expect. The desktop version is
normally under £10.00 UK and I am able to obtain one at a good
electronics shop. Would this apply to the PowerBook version.
Thanks for any info

Re: Wallstreet, pram battery, and other battery question

2004-02-01 Thread Hugo Trottier
Jocelyn here are my 2 cents; You could always get the serial number and
go yourself to a Mac Resellers, get it check 1) To make certain that it
is not stolen good (in that case no Apple resellers will repair it) 2)
To know exactly it's age and who was the original owner. If the sellers
does seems to eager to get his $$$ be careful, it's always better to
walk away with your $$ than a Mac that is going to become a headache
over time and that will end up costing 2 or 3 times as much just in
parts.

Good Luck

Ok, I test drove the Wall street PowerBook that is for sale for $200

The date and time is not holding, so I assume it needs a Pram battery.

The guy told me laptop don't have a PRAM battery. Is that true? If it
does
have a PRAM battery, I need a webpage for PRAM batteries with prices.

Also, it has a SCSI adapter since the SCSI port on the Wall street is
nonstandard. His adapter looks like a pin is missing. He said it came
looking like
that. He did not have a SCSI peripheral to demo the adapter.

When he did a demo on the internal zip drive, he just opened the ZIP
Tools
disc window and commented on the loud sound of the ZIP drive. It
sounds like my
old ZIP, but I'm remembering that some ZIPs were recalled due to
chatter
problem and for ruining zip discs.
I don't know if he had a recalled zip drive.

Then, when he unplugged the laptop from the wall, it died. He finally
confessed that the battery was not holding a charge.
So I need a website for a battery and the price.
I went to the webpage that a nice list person sent me today. It says
that
this model usually goes for $500- $700. So, I'm a little nervous about
the low
price. I asked him to meet me at a Mac place to have it checked over
next week.
I have a gift certificate to that store from my User group. I told him
I'd
apply my $50 gift cert toward the inspection of the laptop. Maybe
that was too
generous on my part.

He is giving me several licensed software programs that I need, but I
need to
iron out these other issues. He seemed a bit too attached to receiving
the
$200 right away.

Any help and info regarding these issues would me appreciated. Wow,
this is
like buying a used car.

Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks

2004-01-14 Thread Hugo Trottier
I would like to share a little of my experience with iPods; I own 2,
the original 5 Gig and a brand new 20 Gig

The 5 Gig battery lasted for about 18 Months. The new 20 Gig one seems
to be fine (so far)

After reading a whole lot on the subject of iPod battery it seems to me
that:

a) those battery will last for (about) 2 years or anywhere between 200
and 500 charges

b) The best way to go about it is never charge the iPod unless it is
almost dead; Not because of the memory factor, but simply

because the battery Kind of remember how many time it has been
charged, and not the amount of energy left in the Battery.

c) Follow Apple iPod/iTunes up date, that is the best (and maybe) only
way to maintain your iPod Battery in top shape

d) Sure way to know if you need to replace the battery is simply making
the rationale as to: How long does it need to be charge vs how long
will it play Exemple: Charged for 12 hours vs played for 2 hours

e) If you want your Battery to last longer, do the following; Do not
set 1) Sound Check 2) Continuous play 3) Equalizer 4) The Shuffle and
play list functions d) Put the Back light control to the minimum

f) If all else fails go to www.pdasmart.com the will sell you a new
battery for your iPod that (with confidence) you can replace yourself

g) Send it in to PDASmart so they will change it for you (less
expansive service than Apple

h) If you are still under Apple warranty do not hesitate send it in!

i) If you can purchase a Apple Care extended Warranty for your iPod it
will pay for itself

Hope that help you

Kind Regards

You simply need to up date your Samsung Driver.
Go to samsung web site under support you will be presented with a vast

As for the hinge fix, I've heard from a few people who've done it
themselves
and the consensus is that it's hard, but doable, and you will end up
with a
screen bezel/frame that may have a slightly homey look, i.e. where
you
pressed it back together with krazy glue. Though perfectly functional.
Which
to me seems a nice step up from using a hingeless Ti-Book with an
external

The one for a G3 Lombard was a downloadable pdf file for $10. It was

We do not recommend our customer to replace the LCD by themselves
because the procedure require a special equipment to replace the LCD.
The
LCD is held together inside the housing with a very tough epoxy and if
you try to pry the LCD out from the housing, you will dent and bent
the
LCD housing.

Nice proof-reading o' the copy there DTT. G

Maxtor is a reputable Hard Disk manufacturer. Go to the website and
fill the forms and get a RMA (return merchandise authorization) and

Re: OT..Sorry..Help w/ 10.2.6 Mail

2003-08-01 Thread Hugo Trottier
Get The robin Williams Mac OS X Book. Spend a few hours, and get to
LOVE this OS.
You will be glad you did!
You can also get, i think you should actualy start with that one The
MAc OSX Conversion Kit: 9 to 10 side by side, it will help you
translate what you already know under os 9 and apply it to os X.

Good Luck and keep the faith

Hi Laurent,
According to service manual from apple, your LaserWriter should use
this:
Rom Size: 4Mb, Maximum Ram: 32 Mb, Number of Sokets : 2, 72 pins SIMMs
Max Ram Speed: 80 ns

Hope That Helps

Does anybody know what kind of memory goes into a LaserWriter

seen some 32MB kits on eBay, but they tend to end up quite high for
such
small amount of memory. Is it really proprietary or can I find
something
somewhere cheap?

Thanks in advance!

 There is a report on www.Macintouch.com (I think that's where I saw

maybe it was on dealmac.com's discussion forums (it was today I saw
 it))
that said it was possible to get a non-Apple card working in the

 it as
 an Airport card.

The Wallstreet is most definitely supported as an OS X machine, the
Kanga is the only G3 based computer that isn't supported (and therefore
will not install at all w/o assistance) AFAIK. I run 10.2.4 on my
Wallstreet 250 and it runs like a top, installed directly from the 10.2
disc that came with my TiBook, havent had any major problems with it
since (although it isnt quite as stable as the TiBook)
