There is no simple way of doing this. It's a two-step process.

a) Unlink child from parents
b) Link child to mother

[LegacyUG] Timeline locations

2014-01-09 Thread Robert57P_gmail
How do I control where Legacy looks for timelines? I don't see it under
CUSTOMIZATION.

I just discovered that Legacy version 8 on my desktop is looking for the
timelines in the old version 7 folder. Not a major problem until I
eventually delete the version 7 folders. How to I tell version 8 to
look in the version 8 timeline folder?

The laptop (that never had version 7) can not find the timelines in my
family file because I did not copy the version 7 folders over to the
laptop. I'm guessing I can copy my unique version 7 timeline files from
my desktop to my version 8 timeline folder on my laptop (and to the
version 8 folder on my desktop). But my family database is looking for
them under the version 7 folder. How do I change this?

The Help file says timelines are located at:
[My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Timeslines\[Language].
But this is not the case for me.
Ah - I just found them under:
C:\winprog\Legacy8\_AppData\Timelines
But I still don't see a way to tell the program where to look.

I should mention that I installed Legacy 8 at C:\winprog\Legacy8
And legacy 7 program is installed at: C:\winprog\Legacy

Considering the number of generations I and others have, I do hope Legacy will

[LegacyUG] Unlinking Father but Keeping the Mother

2014-01-09 Thread JAS POWELL
My gggrandfather was born in Feb 1814.  His supposed father died before Jan
1812.  How do I unlink from the father but not the mother?  When I try to
unlink it will only let me unlink both.  Do I do this then link back to the
mother, or is there a simpler way?

Re: [LegacyUG] Prompt for detail

2014-01-09 Thread Kathy Thompson
Isn't it prompting you to double check that any notes or comments that need
to be added have been added?

For example, I copy Jane's baptism register source, and paste it to her
father's occupation event, prompted for detail I add in Text/Comments
"Citation for daughter Jane's baptism, gives evidence of father's
occupation"
Or, Copy Fred's burial register source, paste to Fred's birth event,
prompted for detail I add in Text/Comments "Citation for burial, register
lists age thus implying approx year of birth"

Confirmed. Problem report raised to have this fixed. To reset the
display you just need to close and restart Legacy that is a lot easier
than generating new web pages without FSID. It will occur if you create
any sort of report with FS ID included.

[LegacyUG] Two Sets of Parents in Legacy Chart

2014-01-09 Thread Chick Lewis
I have a case where two children, Ann and Mark lost both parents in an
accident. Both were adopted by their mother’s sister. The children are
shown biologicaly with their birth parents, and I also show them as adopted
by their aunt and uncle. This is easily explained in notes. BUT, in
Legacy Charting both children appear twice under two sets of parents. How
can I correct this?

Upgrading to FTM 2014 is probably the only way you are going to get the
Links to Pictures out of FTM.
$28 to upgrade -- is it worth it to not manually link your 2300 pictures --

There are no options for exporting to a GEDCOM that will include the links to

I transcribe the details of the family and individual that's found on
the page.
In the master source, I enter the details of where I found it and where
other can find it also,
mostly the details of Ancestry.com, Family Search and the location the
Nation Archives.
In the source details, I enter the year, persons name, roll number,
enumeration district, address
and line number where the family/person is found, then attach an image
of the page.
I do things this way so the individual and family data is in a note,
to be able to see when I open a person to read the event, I have the
facts right there.
To me, the source is how to find the document again.
Also, in reports, I generally dont add sources, the data prints out as a
note for a person
for all to easily see.

Brian,

When you hover in this area the box outline and tooltip appear. Do you
think it would be helpful to have the initials MD in the box and have it
permanently outlined? That way it wouldn't be completely hidden.

That is a bit to many, I think you need to do another count?

That is back to the BC time period?

To get a complete picture, you also need to do the paragraph 3 search for
females. There are more marriages where the ancestry of the wife is unknown,
but there are several in my 100+ generations where the ancestry of the husband
is unknown. To be thorough, do both.

Considering the number of generations I and others have, I do hope Legacy will
soon include the ability to tag Marriage Tags to accommodate tracing.

RE: [LegacyUG] Lumping vs. Splitting

2014-01-09 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Leo,
I'm not Jenny and haven't read the whole thread - but if you can put
the transcription in the Master Source text, then you are almost an
extreme splitter.
For example: I have a Census source for each year for each country.
(most of my research is in the UK) But even if I had one for each
county in the US for each year, I'd hardly transcribe the whole
census for the county and put it in the Master Source Text. ;-)

I rarely use the Master Source Text. I used to for certificates when
I had very few certificates and I saw each one as a separate source -
but now I have a Master Source for certificates from a particular
Registry Office and the transcription again goes into the source detail text.

So the only sources with Master Source text or images are those for
unique items - like a particular Family Bible.

Re: [LegacyUG] Possible bug with FS Numbers/ID

2014-01-09 Thread Brian/Support
Confirmed. Problem report raised to have this fixed. To reset the
display you just need to close and restart Legacy that is a lot easier
than generating new web pages without FSID. It will occur if you create
any sort of report with FS ID included.

RE: [LegacyUG] Lumping vs. Splitting

2014-01-09 Thread lio .
David:

Thank you very much for the explanation. That really helped make it clearer for
me. I'm now teetering on switching over to lumping and using shared events
(from splitting and creating separate events).

As I'm playing catch-up I think using the shared events will help me in the
time required (much faster to click a few boxes, instead of creating separate
events and sourcing them).

Although I prefer like Jenny's method, I think I need to focus on completing
the project in a timely manner, and once everything has been re-input and
properly sourced I can go back and create separate events for key people.

Thanks (I'm mostly talking out loud I guess).

RE: [LegacyUG] Lumping vs. Splitting

2014-01-09 Thread lio .
Jenny:

1. As I mentioned when I started my family tree I didn't source my documents (I
never in a million years thought it would get as big as it is, and did not
understand why it was so important).

I'm now trying to redo my tree, but this time sourcing each documents (I do
have copies of every document, and written on the back the day I accessed it,
etc.).

My method of splitting is taking me WAY too long to redo. I'm thinking lumping
will save me a huge amount of time.

Can I ask you (and any other lumpers).

*I* transcribe the complete document and copy to the Master Text. I then copy
pertinent parts of the Master Text to the Detail Text depending on what I want
to prove. (VERY time consuming, but I liked that if forced me to analyze the
document).

*You* transcribe the complete document, but instead of having it in the Master
text you have the complete transcription in the Detail text. Is that right?
Everyone using that Source has the complete transcription.

2. Comparing your method to Shared Events, your method seems more exact (and
transferable by GEDCOM) is the only plus of Shared Events that it would be
faster?

Thanks again for your direction,

leo

Re: [LegacyUG] How to tell where a source file is located?

2014-01-09 Thread Cathy Pinner
Dave,

The text file of missing media given to you by the Media Relinker or
by clicking Test all Media Folders button at Options > Customise 6.2
and then checking "Make a list of all missing media" includes the
path of the missing media as well as the name.

You need to keep checking that - though it may be time to rethink how
you file your media and then let the Media Relinker find the file.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to get FTM media files to export to Legacy8

2014-01-09 Thread William Boswell
She's using the 2009 version. I just installed it to test and she is right.
There are no options for exporting to a GEDCOM that will include the links to
her image files. She would need a later version. The only one I know that
will do it is FTM 2014 if exported properly.

I am not sure you have specified which version of FTM you have?

They all work a little different and have different options.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging marriages

2014-01-09 Thread Kurt Kneeland
Marriage Tags and Individual Tags are separate. Unfortunately, there is not
yet an advanced tagging function for the Marriage Tags. They can only be
turned on/off one at a time.

Best I can think of is to use advanced tagging to tag your direct ancestors
(exclude siblings, etc, and limit to the desired number of generations.

You can then create a search list based on that tag and perhaps limit the
search list to just the males. Then you could go through that search list to
set the marriage tags.

Is there a way to use this to tag the intervening marriages as marriage tag #1.
This presumes that the tags are different between general and marriage tags.
If not I can use a different tag #.

I would like to use the tags as a research guide and not have to work down the
marriage list (8400) one by one, not knowing right off, which are direct
ancestors and which are 5th cousins 5x removed.

Any pointers to directions or assistance is appreciated.

Diane,

Have you tried posting your problem on the FTM Message Board on Ancestry?
There appears to be several discussions regarding the transfer of media files
via a gedcom from FTM. (Make you sure mention which FTM program you have.)

Diane:

Brian has the correct answer.

Create a GEDCOM for FTM with Family Tree Maker as the destination. That
will include all the FTM information and give Legacy the maximum amount
of data, including links to any media files you have linked in FTM.

Like Legacy, Animap is a Windows program. You may be able to run it on a
Mac using any of the virtual machine options which you use for running
Windows and Windows programs. Bootcamp, Parallels, VMWare etc.

No guarantees and if you want more/better information contact GoldBug
Software the authors of Animap. They would best be able to help you with
questions concerning their program.

Their website is at http://www.goldbug.com.

I’m wondering if all those that responded saying that they record every AKA
along with the source where they found it really mean that they record every
common variation of a name. What I mean specifically if someone’s given name
was Robert, do they record an instance of Bob, and Bobbie, and Rob, and
Robbie. If the name was Franklin, do they record Frank and Frankie? So far I’ve
tended to ignore these common variations as additional AKAs and have only
recorded the unusual ones such as “Stretch”, “Slim”, “Bones”, etc. It just
seems to me that if you record each and every instance of a spelling variation
that you find, you end up with a family file that is grossly inflated in sheer
numbers. I guess what I’m getting at is there has to be a little common sense
applied here. For example, if you do a search for someone named Robert on
FamilySeach, it will automatically include all those common variations to
include Rob, Bob, etc.

Just a different way to keep something that has been available a long
time. In 7.5 and earlier that box opened when you clicked on the date in
the bottom of the screen. In 8.0 the date is no longer on screen so the
hotspot box was added as a trigger point.

There appears to be several discussions regarding the transfer of media
files via a gedcom from FTM. (Make you sure mention which FTM program you

RE: [LegacyUG] How to get FTM media files to export to Legacy8

2014-01-09 Thread William Boswell
Maybe FTM 2009 doesn't have the capability to export links in a GEDCOM. All I
know is the current version of FTM will do it if the links in your FTM data
file are actually linked. You have to select your destination as FTM after
selecting GEDCOM 5.5 otherwise it won't work. I selected FTM 16 and it worked.

You might have to upgrade to the latest FTM version, but prior to doing so I
would make sure your images in FTM are actually linked to people. There's no
sense spending money on an upgrade if it doesn't work either because nothing is
linked.

I opened the GEDCOM I exported from FTM using Wordpad then searched for ".jpg".
This is an example of what it found: FILE H:\Genealogy\Prog Backups\FTM
2014\Data\Boswell Ltd4 Media\302-04.jpg

I’m afraid that is not the answer. My only choice to make a “GEDCOM for FTM16”
and when I checked it in Word it did not include either the media files or
links to the files. As with the “GEDCOM 5.5” option the box to include media
files was greyed out.

However I did try it and imported the “GEDCOM for FTM16” into Legacy but no
media files are found.

Diane:

Brian has the correct answer.

Create a GEDCOM for FTM with Family Tree Maker as the destination. That
will include all the FTM information and give Legacy the maximum amount
of data, including links to any media files you have linked in FTM.

Do I actually /want/ 36 variant surname spellings to be
"more visible" in reports that cover 328 people would be a
question to consider, though.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to get FTM media files to export to Legacy8

2014-01-09 Thread Diane Marcotte
I’m afraid that is not the answer. My only choice to make a “GEDCOM for FTM16”
and when I checked it in Word it did not include either the media files or
links to the files. As with the “GEDCOM 5.5” option the box to include media
files was greyed out.

However I did try it and imported the “GEDCOM for FTM16” into Legacy but no
media files are found.

2014-01-09 Thread William Boswell
All I know is the media links from FTM to Legacy worked using FTM 2014 to
export a GEDCOM so Diane might have to upgrade or try the instructions I gave
in another post.

I noticed in my test that I had to choose FTM 16. It might work choosing one
of the other FTM versions, but I didn't try. If exporting to just a GEDCOM
only, the media links don't transfer over.

I don't know about FTM, but Ancestry flat out states that media from
trees there will not be included in there gedcoms and that seems to include
media links. Perhaps in FTM they can sync media from Ancestry but 2009 seems
way before the time that feature was added. So there may be neither media or
media links.

Below this there are boxes next to 7 items, namely:

When I choose “GEDCOM 5.5(standard)” the last 4 in the list are greyed out

included in this GEDCOM either I'm afraid.

Probably the same way everybody else finds it--spelling the name correctly.
That's how I found most of the records with misspelled names. In a few cases,
I didn't find the record and only found it by accident when looking for
somebody else. If the sources are cited properly, someone should be able to
find the record again. Just because an online indexer couldn't spell or was in
a hurry, why should we list it wrong if an image clearly shows the correct
spelling or a spelling variation?

The same way I found it!

I would record what I see on the image, not an incorrect transcription
made by someone else. I also record the precise details of where the
record was found so anyone else wanting to find what I found can either
use the information I provide in my Source Citation or can search from
scratch the way I did, using wild cards, intelligent guesses,
imagination ... whatever it takes.

I have a feeling that the Relinker tool will only work if your Legacy data has
already been set up with the images linked. I don't think it will work if you
are trying to establish the linking process unless an FTM GEDCOM has preserved
the path to those images.

What version of FTM are you using?

Unfortunately that did not work. I transferred all 2300 media files from the
FTM folder I have into ….\Legacy Family Tree\Media as you suggested. I then
ran the Relinker tool but still get this message “There are no Media files in
this family file.”

My FTM media is called “Latest Full Tree_Jul 15, 2008 Media” and it is off a
folder called “Family Tree Maker” on my hard-drive. First I copied the “Latest
Full Tree_Jul 15, 2008 Media” folder to Legacy Family Tree\Media and when that
didn’t work I deleted the folder and copied just the 2300 media files. But I
still get the message “There are no Media files in this family file.”

This is the file structure I have after installing Legacy and importing my tree
from FTM:

You mentioned a more complicated method???

It may be more visible there, but in my view it implies that the person
WAS KNOWN by that different version of the name, which is not so.

I have one instance in my database where a whole family was listed in
the Census with the wrong surname. (Probably an error of the Enumerator
made when copying from the original forms to the books which we see.)
It would cause no end of confusion if I implied that the Ashworths were
also known as the Birtwistles. On the other hand, I have a family where
the father and several children were known for some years as Dinnage
rather than Pitt and so they have Dinnage recorded as an AKA.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to get FTM media files to export to Legacy8

2014-01-09 Thread Diane Marcotte
Hi Brian,

I opened the GEDCOM file in Word - all 3198 pages of it. I searched for a few
names of images I have in my FTM Tree and it found none. I then searched for
the term “jpg” (without the quotes) and it only found instances where the term
"jpg" came up in notes I had made.

The main problem seems to be that FTM does not give me the option of including
media files, or it now seems even links, when I export to GEDCOM5.5. The
dialog box shows that I have three choices under “Output format”, namely
“Family Tree Maker” – “GEDCOM 5.5 (standard)” and “GEDCOM for FTM 16”. Below
this there are boxes next to 7 items, namely:

·Privatize living people

·Include private facts

·Include private notes

·Include media files

·Include tasks

·Include charts, reports, and books

·Include only items linked to selected individuals

When I choose “GEDCOM 5.5(standard)” the last 4 in the list are greyed out
INCLUDING “include media files”.

It appears that the links do not show in the GEDCOM file either so I can see
that Legacy doesn’t know I had links in the original FTM file.

Surely Legacy must get new users who were using FTM before. Do all of these
new users have to abandon Legacy 8 or manually link every image? I don’t have
the time or interest in spending days if not months doing this as I have over
2300 images. I realize the problem stems with FTM but I was hoping that a
solution existed.

Thanks for your attempts to help!!

Diane

At one point Diane I believe you said you chose an option in FTM to export only
to GEDCOM 5.5. In Legacy when we present that option we only export a limited
subset of the data for individuals. Did you also choose to include the links to
your media in the GEDCOM? If there were no links to media in the FTM GEDCOM
then Legacy would not know that you had media linked in the original FTM file.
The message from the relinker saying there are no media files in the family
file is saying that Legacy did not find any media links to any media file. It
can only fix links to files which are named but where the location of the file
has changed or where the user has changed the name of the file so it no longer
exists under the expected name.

Open the GEDCOM you exported from FTM, it is a plain text file so you can open
it with Notepad or any other text editor. Use the search function to see if you
can find the name of one of the files you know were attached to someone in the
file. If the file name was not in the GEDCOM then you will have to go back to
FTM and export a new GEDCOM.

This time select the option to export for FTM itself to include the maximum
information including links to the media files. Import that new GEDCOM into a
new family file to see if the media links now exist.

Create a GEDCOM for FTM with Family Tree Maker as the destination. That

RE: [LegacyUG] When to use AKAs

2014-01-09 Thread William Boswell
That is true about an inflated family file and all those variations.

For abbreviations like Robt (Robert) and Jno (John), I normally spell them out
since they're obvious. Something like "Hattie" (I have a lot of Hattie's) or
"Fannie" I have to assume are nicknames so I have to list them. Sometimes the
records show different spellings of the name or the middle name is used for a
first name. I had this with one ancestor and discovered that because he used
his middle name (Mathew) as a first name and his first name (Ignatius) as his
middle, his wife had a problem receiving his pension money because they thought
it was a different person. In that case, I listed his name switch because he
did this often in the records.

The view you get in Windows Explorer may depend on your pdf default
viewer. I use the free Foxit reader and I can see the icons in Explorer
(from medium size and up) as thumbnails of the first page of the pdf.
Nevertheless in Legacy a pdf still shows as the standard document pages
icon.

I attach a number of PDF files to sources, but also when possible include the
text contained or related to that PDF that way I don't have to keep opening an
external file. Another alternative, if available to you, is to convert PDF
files to JPG's if it doesn't contain a lot of pages. I just choose relevant
pages for that source then convert them to JPGs. Just a suggestion.

Since Legacy can read PDFs, why do we only get to see the standard "document

Thanks. I know about Ancestry.com. I believe they use software to transcribe
most of their records which is why I don't trust their transcriptions. If no
image is available with the transcription, it gets a low-star rating from me
until I find something better.

I guess I should have been clearer on this. I was talking about people I knew
like my great aunts and uncles and those who share my last name or that I knew.
I've seen Boswell spelled as BOSWENN. I know that to be wrong, but I listed
it as an AKA anyway. I've only found this at Ancestry.com.

In that same census record, many of the first names were wrong too and I've
seen this error get transferred over to other people's trees. "Johanna" was
listed as "Josephine." This one is typed so it had to be listed in my AKA's.
This could have been converted from handwritten to typewritten after the census
was taken and transcribed wrong at that time. I can't imagine the census taker
had a typewriter with him/her at the time.

This is a totally different question. Ancestry.com is the worse. If the
index says Joan Davis but I clearly see John Davies on the actual page, I
record the name as John Davies. I don’t care what the indexer wrote. This
happens all the time.

On your other point, I would be careful making assumptions about how a name
should be spelled, especially on census records. Yes, people were illiterate
and census takers could be in a hurry. A neighbor could have been the one to
provide the information. You just never know.

However… I have a person in my file named Henry Pinkney McMichael. Henry is a
girl. If you were to look on Ancestry.com many people have her as Henrietta
because they ASSUME that must have been her real name. All of the census
takers had to have been wrong, right? How about a Bible entry written by her
own mother where she recorded the name as Henry. Never assume.

Another example, my great grandmother was named Corrine. Or, was it Corine,
Corinne, Corean? You tell me. I record it every way I see because I have no
way to know how SHE spelled it (or her mother at the time of her birth).

I got it to work in FTM 2014. I exported my FTM data file with images to a
GEDCOM 5.5.

Click on OK.

The box "Export to GEDCOM" pops up.

Instead of selecting "Other" select "FTM 16"

Leave character set at "ANSI"

Click OK

Name your GEDCOM

Watch the box that pops up to make sure it is transferring media. I tested it
on a select few names that I knew had images.

I don't know if it will work with Version 2009, but it's worth a try.

I have a feeling that the Relinker tool will only work if your Legacy data has
already been set up with the images linked. I don't think it will work if you
are trying to establish the linking process unless an FTM GEDCOM has preserved
the path to those images.

Thanks!

If the person is indexed under the name, incorrect as it may be, how
will you find them again in other places which derive their data from
the original place which contains the error without having recorded that
spelling error as an AKA? Yes you said you put the name as it was
recorded in the source transcription but the AKA is a more visible place
to see that somewhere his name was recorded with that transcription error.

RE: [LegacyUG] When to use AKAs

2014-01-09 Thread Michele/Support

I always include all AKA's because it could be important in finding new

especially with the census records, that many misspellings could be attributed
to the census taker and/or family member could not read or write or didn't know
how to spell their own name.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to get FTM media files to export to Legacy8

2014-01-09 Thread Brian/Support
At one point Diane I believe you said you chose an option in FTM to
export only to GEDCOM 5.5. In Legacy when we present that option we only
export a limited subset of the data for individuals. Did you also choose
to include the links to your media in the GEDCOM? If there were no links
to media in the FTM GEDCOM then Legacy would not know that you had media
linked in the original FTM file. The message from the relinker saying
there are no media files in the family file is saying that Legacy did
not find any media links to any media file. It can only fix links to
files which are named but where the location of the file has changed or
where the user has changed the name of the file so it no longer exists
under the expected name.

Open the GEDCOM you exported from FTM, it is a plain text file so you
can open it with Notepad or any other text editor. Use the search
function to see if you can find the name of one of the files you know
were attached to someone in the file. If the file name was not in the
GEDCOM then you will have to go back to FTM and export a new GEDCOM.
This time select the option to export for FTM itself to include the
maximum information including links to the media files. Import that new
GEDCOM into a new family file to see if the media links now exist.

are trying to establish the linking process unless an FTM GEDCOM has preserved

RE: [LegacyUG] How to tell where a source file is located?

2014-01-09 Thread William Boswell
I always place my census record images by the year of the census then the
individual files are renamed by Roll number, State, Census Page Number, and
name of head of household (i.e., 1920 CT T625_190 Pg 3-B Wm B Shalkop). I say
"renamed" because some online websites use a meaningless number for a file
name. My way works for me, but may not work for others so you have to create a
system that works for you then stick with it.

I am overly organized and also keep a spreadsheet for photos listing all file
names along with who is in the picture, when it was taken, and other useful
information. That's probably the extreme, but it sure helps when I need to
find a file when there are thousands to go through.

"Right" is a tad subjective, though, Ed. What's legally
"right" may not be logically "right" or even ethically
"right", and what's "right" for family may not be "right"
for scholars or professional genealogists.

It also depends on where you're thinking of recording it.
In your SOURCES, you record what's on the document, period.
It's a bit more complex in family-view.

I tried entering people under the spelling on the document
and it created trees with 4 or 5 "alternate parents", made
using the database unnecessarily challenging, and generally
wreaked havoc. I decided life was too short. I went back to
entering it so I could FIND it again.

I have one surname for which I currently have 42
*documented* variant spellings. That surname gets the
spelling my branch of the family has used since about 1830.
I don't want to see a printed list of those variants every
time I generate a report.

I don’t think there is a standard Windows function for doing that. If you look
at Windows file explorer, at a folder with mixed jpg and pdf files, and you
have in Thumbnail view, you’ll see thumbnails of the jpg files but just a big
icon for the pdf files.

The only place I can remember seeing thumbnails of pdf files is in Paperport.
So it is possible, but they may be using proprietary software to do it.

[LegacyUG] Prompt for detail

2014-01-09 Thread Jenny M Benson
In Legacy 8 I have just set Option 7.4 to Default of Off, as I had it in
Legacy 7.5, because it was really annoying me that the Detail Screen
kept popping up until I remembered that I could switch it off.

But it occurred to me that the prompt, when set to On, occurs too late.
  The sequence is:

1 Enter Source Details.
2 Copy Source to Clipboard.
3 Paste Source Clipboard.
4 The Source Detail screen appears with a ticked checkbox for Prompt
for detail.

If you don't want to set the default of Off, but want to be able to
choose sometimes to be prompted, you want to be prompted at the time of
Copying to the Clipboard. If you could choose at that point, you could
UNtick the box then happily roam around your family file going Paste,
Paste, Paste without interruption.

Very often I am only going to paste that Source once so presenting me
with the Source Detail when I've already Pasted and then saying "do you
want to be prompted for this?" is just silly!

RE: [LegacyUG] How to get FTM media files to export to Legacy8

2014-01-09 Thread Diane Marcotte

Thanks!

Diane

Diane:

It is best to place all your media files in the folder:

C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media

That is where Legacy 8 would like your media files.

If you can copy your media files to that directory and then run Relinker -- Go
to:

1. Tools > Media Relinker and run it.

 2. After Media Linker has found all you media files, choose the Gather Tab and
have it place a copy of the media files into that folder (this will insure that
you have all your media files in the above folder).

As a note, older versions of Family Tree Maker has their our database that they
place the media files into.

Unless you have kept copies of your picture files elsewhere, there may be a
problem of finding those FTM picture files.

Let me know if the Media Relinker worked.

If not, a more complicated process may be necessary.

Re: [LegacyUG] When to use AKAs

2014-01-09 Thread ChasH
I customize the family view with AKA1 (1st alternate name) and AKA2 (2nd
alternate name), then I list all the different Given names and spellings
in AKA1 separating each with a space. (Heinrich Henry)I do the same for
Surnames in AKA2. (Ladendorff Landenderf) That way I can easily see all
the name variations used by the husband/wife on the family view. It
works for me. Add sources to the Name as usual bolding the variation on
the source detail.

I record EXACTLY WHAT I SEE, so when recording Heinrich's 1860 Census
entry I would record his name as Henry Lander (this would be part of the
entry in the Desc field) and if he was head of the household I would put
"household of Henry Lander" as part of the Source Detail.

What I would almost certainly NOT do is enter any of those names in the
AKA field, which I reserve for other names by which a person was
actually known, not for spelling errors, typos etc. I know that if a
person is named, for example, John Clark, I need to look for Clark,
Clarke, Clerk - with all the variations of John - and if I cite a Source
where he is referred to as Jno Clarke I think anyone can see the
connection to John Clark. If John Clarke is brought up by his
stepfather Mr Brown and regularly uses the name John Brown, then that is
an AKA and needs to be recorded as such.

This is really a personal preference thing but I will tell you that I record
ALL akas that I find in the records. In your census example, I would record
each one and I would use the specific census as the source for each AKA. That
way I can easily see how his name was recorded and where it was recorded that
way.

Re: [LegacyUG] When to use AKAs

I think every alternate name that you come across should be recorded
together with the source where you came across it. These names do not
have to appear in Individual and Family Group reports but for anyone
following on from your research they could be very useful.
