[MBZ] Blower motor blowing fuse, 85 TD
Kaleb, do you have a used assembly? Rusty's site shows $484. I tried to use the link at the bottom and although the site page opens, the links do not. Jerry called today about the fuse blowing. With it unplugged at the motor, fuse doesn't blow. A jumper wire to the motor will run it, but wire gets very hot. Are there replace bearings or just the motor available at a cheaper price? Re: [MBZ] Greetings: Thanks and Introduction!
Thanks Harry! Favorite tool: That's a tough one! Depends a lot on the job at hand. I have a pair (one straight, one Phillips) of tiny Craftsman offset ratchet screwdrivers that will really help in tight spots. It's the right tool for changing out voltage regulators on the W123/W126. I always carry a folding pocket-clip knife with a well-sharpened blade. Buck, Spyderco, Gerber or Schrade. I like AUS-8 steel. If I'm travelling I like to have a good Leatherman tool with me. It's surprising what you can do with one. I have a Unimat SL-1000 in my shop. It is a jewel of a tool. A Makita cordless drill with NiCad batteries has been in my toolbox for 20 years and still holds a good charge! Further afield, and apropos of grape shot, I have owned several Remington 870 shotguns. They just work. The tool I use most frequently is probably this IBM T40 laptop. I recently saw some pictures of the interior of the space station. There were 1/2 dozen ThinkPads in the work area I saw. It's the right stuff. Oh, and BTW: I am not above reaching for a Vise Grip when I'm beyond caring if I round off a bolt head! [MBZ] OT: DTV antenna, homemade
I just finished and tried out a $0.00 out of pocket homemade DTV antenna. I am quite pleased with its performance, although SWMBO decreed that it will not be in our house where it can be seen. I guess I will hang it in the attic and run a cable down to the TV. To be honest, I used 10 new 3/4 wood screws and 10 new #10 or #12 washers. It would cost me a little to replace them. A chunk of redwood I salvaged off our old porch torn down 8 yrs ago, and I had the antenna - coax dongle and I used the thin hangers from the cleaners. Re: [MBZ] OT: DTV antenna, homemade
Why does DTV require a special antenna when it's using the same frequency as analog TV? This is simple physics, f/234 = 1/4~ length of the antenna, these things don't change based on the medium of transport (i.e. digital/analog/morse code/FM/AM/SSB/packet etc). Because they have moved most of the frequencies to UHF - the elements are now 8' long. I also made that antenna yesterday, worked MUCH better inside than the single whip that came with the USB tuner for the laptop. Today I mounted it 32 ft. up on one of the HP loop supports, and got three more channels, all solid reception. I made mine out of aluminum clothsline wire that was left over from quad antenna that I dis-assembled years ago. Almost forgot - the coax from the antenna is RG-62, stripped out from under the computer room's raised floor during a clean-up phase a few years ago. Old IBM terminal/controller stuff. It's the wrong impedance, but seems to work well enough for reception. I did buy a $5.00 BNC to F adapter. [MBZ] Taking advantage of the weather.
The weather isn't as good as in NC, but it's above freezing now. :-) Gave the car a good wash today, waxed the wood, what little there is, and shampooed the floor mats. I noticed one of the sills it a bit soft behind the front right wheel. I think due to previous collision repairs that weren't done to 100% Mercedes standards. The car does have a few little surface spots here and there, but not bad for living through salty winters for 20 years. I just have to make a decision if I should put some money into this one once the newer previously enjoyed car arrives, or should I part with it. As I go over the car, I am adding to the list of things it should have to keep it in proper Mercedes shape. It's probably at the point where it no longer makes financial sense to make too many big expenditures on it, but when I see it sitting there, all cleaned up, Jeez, I really do like that car! :-) Anyone know if you can buy pre formed sections of the sill for replacement, or must they all be fabricated from scratch. I know for old Porsches, there are places that make a lot of the body panel bits up, but not sure about Mercedes. Well, the mats are drying, and if the weather holds, I'll pull the wheels tomorrow and see what the winter has done to the brakes and rotors, and what else needs to go on the to do list. hee hee. Doesn't, but many of us were too lazy/cheap to put up a good antenna when the rabbit ears were working passably. Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel
You must be compensated for work over 8 hrs per day/40 hrs per week in any case, there are no exemptions from compensation. There IS an exemption from overtime pay, but the employee must receive compensation for all hours worked, and the employer MUST document them. There is a common misconception floating about that salaried employees don't get payed anything for work over the 8 hrs/day 40 hrs per week, but that is not true (as WalMart and Radio Shack discoveredl Time off counts, which may be OK for you and may not, but it IS compensation and it's tangible. Not getting fired is NOT tangible compensation. If you document hours worked and are denied compensation (which I strongly recommend, by the way), the Labor Relations Board will be interested. You are in fact due compensation for each hour worked. Not shift differential or weekend pay, necessarily. Peter On Mar 8, 2009, at 8:23 PM, Michael LaFleur wrote: People get paid for this? Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel
Peter, I must kindly disagree, If you are classified as an Exempt Employee, than there are no limitations on how many hours, days, weekends, travel time, etc you spend at the job. There are no 8 hour days, 40 hour weeks. You are paid an annual salary and you work until the job is done. You are discussing Non Exempt employee status which, by the name, implies that there are numerous rules that must be followed. While I have quoted Federal regs, there may be various State variations but the term Exempt and Non Exempt still apply. Probably the Unions also have a say in this in some industries. Not getting fired is NOT tangible compensation. If you document hours worked and are denied compensation (which I strongly recommend, by the way), the Labor Relations Board will be interested. Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel
In a non-union world, the difference between Exempt and Non-exempt is that Exempt Employees are self directed don't punch a time clock while Non-exempt Employees are directly supervised labor and do punch a time clock. Exempt Employees are expected to be self motivated and even though they have a direct Manager, are expected to get the job done. But this is very general. Some Exempt Employees are paid over time, usually at straight time rates but some over time does not start until you cross 48 hours for the week. Some companies consider 50 hours / week normal for Exempt and they build the pay into the compensation package. Their HR department will tell you up front that Saturdays, some Sundays and long hours are expected. If you don't want the hours than its easy enough to say NO up front, even in today's job climate. You might be surprised at what they counter with. I've worked for organizations where I was classified as Exempt but they still required me to be in the office from 8 to 5 even though I did not punch a clock. I've also worked for organizations where I was expected to fill out a time sheet and if I did not complete at least 50 hours / week and show up most Saturdays, I was talked to about my commitment to the company. The most interesting negotiation I had was when I was a Quality Manager. The Plant Manager called me into his office to chastise me for not working Saturdays while all of his other Managers were working Saturdays. I explained to him that if I could not trust my staff to do their jobs on Saturdays then I had hired the wrong people. Then I asked him why his other Managers were coming in every Saturday? He had nothing to say for about 3 minutes from then on the other Managers rotated Saturdays. I came in Saturdays, but only for special projects. I've also worked for companies where the Manager / Director was concerned about any Exempt Employees working more than 40 hours / week. Even to the point where some insisted that I accumulate comp time for any extra hours spent during the week. The Union world is a little more clear cut. If you are salary, you are Exempt, if you are hourly you are Non-exempt. More often than not Salary Exempt Employees get overtime pay at the straight rate or 1.5X pay. I've worked in the Union world too and the work environment is really no different. These days, when I'm not selling kegging supplies at www.kegkits.com, I'm a consultant who bills hourly for my services. I've been a consultant for 8 years - I design deploy custom SQL Server based database solutions for small and not so small businesses. Right now, I spend 2 - 3 days / week at one organization where the Exempt Employees are expected to work what's required. I spend 1 - 2 days a week at another organization where the office staff works 40 hours / week and store Management works an average of 70 hours / week. But the Managers are compensated with a bonus program that is tied to store efficiency and profitability and they want to work 70 hours / week. The third organization I spend 1 - 2 days / week at has 2 high level Managers who work what's required - 40, 50, 70+ hours / week while the hourly Employees work 35 - 40 hours / week. No-one punches a time clock at the last one. Striplin Sent: Sunday, March 08, 2009 10:08 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel while I am not looking up the exact regs etc, I do know there are salary exempt employees (what I was on my last job) that are on salary, get paid the same no matter how many hours they work. There are also salary non-exempt where you still do not punch a clock but if you work over 40 you get paid. Then there is hourly, where of course, you clock in and out and get paid based on that. John Freer wrote: Peter, I must kindly disagree, If you are classified as an Exempt Employee, than there are no limitations on how many hours, days, weekends, travel time, etc you spend at the job. -- Kaleb C.
8 is more realistic for UHF. The standard large TV antenna usually was based on 1/2~ (40 give or take per side for the longest elements) log periodic array. Most of the single elements worked well to make a 2m 1/4~ beam. Trim the aluminum tube down to length, drill the 3/8 holes through the old mast, and tap them in place with a sheet metal screw. Add a basic L balun, tune, and we're up and running. I made one of these nearly 20 years ago that measured out around 13.5dBi on an 8ft boom. I tried it propped up near the ceiling, and it was better than the whip, but I got three more stations with it 32 ft. up the mast. I'm 25 to 30 miles from the transmitters. I'm afraid that the receiver isn't up to the task of DX work. I suspect that the s/n ratio would be improved with a reflector behind the array. Yes - that was supposed to be 8 - silly shift key!
