You need the exact schematics of your car, and the others.
Find and reverse-engineer the differences. Remember that
you don't have to dip the sender in fuel in order to test
its range, nor even put it all together. Just run it back
and forth with your finger and see if the gauge responds
correctly.

I love velour interiors. Never understood why they are considered cheap
(in the USA at least). Velour does collect dog hair and lint, but that's
about the only downside as far as I can tell. Cozy in the winter and it
don't stick to you in the summer, unlike leather or vinyl.

Now, the rough woven polyester that they call "cloth" in bottom-of-the-line
American and Japanese cars is quite a different thing and very unpleasant.

I think that really shorts the TDI too, the 2012 is rated for 42 highway which
is most of what I drive.

The new EPA estimates are crazy low, my '84 190D 2.2l auto is EPA rated 27/31,
I average about 38 with runs up to 40. The '98 TDI was rated 33/44.

'98 E300 is 23/31, we'll give it the benefit of the doubt that 35 is quite
possible, still pretty low when you drive 112 miles a day.

1 mile    $ 4.00
 x  = 38.9 MPG
$ 0.09    gallon

$ 0.10 / mile => 35.0 MPG

$ 0.11 / mile => 31.8 MPG

Thats what I was thinking. I've driven a 2012 sedan and a '98 sedan, the 2012
is a rocket ship, but the 90hp '98 with 155ft/lb is no slouch, probably as
quick as Fred's '87 190D turbo.
That said I've never driven one with an auto, should still be much faster than
a 617 300TD.

I bet he find the turbo isn't up to much.

Then something's wrong with it.  An '04 TDI should be as fast as an '87

From looking at brochures online, it looks like velour was available
from the '70s ( starting with the W116, W123 & C107) to at least the
'90MY here in the US (in no less then 8 colors!) on all models except
for the SL Roadster. N/C on some models, the option cost around $1K+-
for all others.

No different then ordering heated seats really, as in it was listed in
the price/equipment or paint/upholstery brochures & there was no extra
charge over what the option cost. Unlike the SPC program Mercedes
currently has for special options/trim (which they hide in the ordering
guides, not sure why?), that entails a total additional $250 charge for
the option(s) ordered.

I think I would choose velor over the Tex or leather myself (in the
periods where it was offered). Came across a dark gray 300E for sale
online once that had a black velor interior, looked really nice!

Ooooh, I wonder if there was a CA only tank. Yours is a federal (ie 49 state)

as the federal model.

Otherwise maybe a wire got pinched or something.

Something you have not messed with since the tank change is changing the
current the guage is reading.  Only thing I can come up with would be if
the tank is supposed to be grounded to the chassis and maybe the coating on
the new tank is preventing a good ground?

Does the circuit have it's own ground or is it depending on a connection
between the sender and the tank and the tank to the chassis?

Maybe

Hi all, new member here and new owner of an 84' 300D. Being brand new to these
cars I don't have a point of reference.

I have a cyclical rumble felt in the seat from about 30mph up. It occurs
primarily when engine is under load (accelerating or maintaining speed up a
hill). Its about one second on, one off. Seems like it might get slightly
faster with speed. It's not terribly annoying but would like to fix it if
possible.

Flex discs and carrier bearing look good. Both have about 80k. New engine and
trans mounts. Transmission has about 80k miles on it. One new axle half shaft.
One old one but boots are intact. Driveshaft has one weight on it that I could
find.

Someone told me this is the natural vibes of a straight 5 cylinder. Not sure if
i believe that. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Also, can anyone
recommend a good w123 mechanic in the Norman, Moore, Okc area?

Thanks,
Daniel

2013-06-23 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
An 07 would be an E550, and it would have Harman Becker NTG1. Although the
system shows it age today, its still quite nice. I wouldn't hesitate to
buy a car with it.

The '09 C would be a more modern NTG4 made by Mitsubishi. I don't have any
personal experience with it, but I haven't heard anything bad.

Huh? $4.00/40 miles = 10 cents per mile at 40 mpg.

I figured, first order approximation, 45mpg at 9 cents and 36mpg at 11 cents.

A 210 4matic wagon can do 30 mpg, but not at 70 mph (mine has almost 250k and
can do it at 60-62mph).

A 210 turbo 2wd sedan should get somewhere over 35 mpg on a 56 mile hwy trip,
shouldn't it?

I'd be surprised if the turbo OM606 didn't. The '95 diesel W124 with the
NA 606 easily gets 30 mpg, and the 210 chassis has a significantly better
Cd than the 124 (which was no slouch in its day).

Just guessing, but perhaps the advent of the 'economy' gauge

Driveline frequency, or wheel? The former is about 3x the latter.
Has the driveline been removed/operated upon by the unworthy, perhaps
misaligning the halves? Lotsa rubber that can be replaced under

Re: [MBZ] Random orbit polisher/waxer

Anything from HF with more than one moving part is likely to fail sooner
rather than later. That said, I bought one of their big wet tile saws,
and was quite pleased with it. It took some occasional "maintenance"
but it did very well. And the $20 recip saw is still going strong,
surprisingly, after getting used quite severely.

2013-06-23 Thread Scott Ritchey

You know, I love my 126 SD, I loved my 123 TD, and I wouldn't mind having a
124. But I'm not sure I'd have a new MBZ, even for free. IMO, reputation
was (and WAS is the operative word here) Mercedes' strongest asset. One
story like this overrides hundreds of positive reports. Major engine
failure with less than 200K miles is just unacceptable for a modern car with
scheduled maintenance.

But I'm sure MBUSA isn't interested in my opinion.

Re: [MBZ] Cyclical vibration

2013-06-23 Thread Gerry Archer
It's been my experience that the first thing to check when one has any kind
of vibration is tires. Sometimes one can feel a tread separation just by
carefully feeling for it on each tire. The next thing is to jack up each
end of the car and lay a straight edge on a block close to the tread and
slowly turn the wheel. After that, rotating the tires front to back can be
diagnostic if that changes the frequency/interval of the vibration. If so,
take the car to a good tire shop for rebalancing and professional checks.
If no luck after that, then I check the tie rod ends and other parts of the
front end for looseness. Also check the wheel lugs for looseness.
I put a large pipe wrench on the drive shaft and twist it while closely
looking at the flex discs for cracks in the rubber. I make sure and put the
pipe wrench close to the ends of the drive shaft links so the drive shaft
"tube" won't be deformed. The rubber mount for the carrier bearing should
be moveable but not loosely moveable.

If none of that is diagnostic, then perhaps some of the real pros on this
list can suggest more serious problems to look for.

Hi all, new member here and new owner of an 84' 300D. Being brand new to
these cars I don't have a point of reference.

I have a cyclical rumble felt in the seat from about 30mph up. It occurs
primarily when engine is under load (accelerating or maintaining speed up
a

hill). Its about one second on, one off. Seems like it might get slightly
faster with speed. It's not terribly annoying but would like to fix it if
possible.

Flex discs and carrier bearing look good. Both have about 80k. New engine
and trans mounts. Transmission has about 80k miles on it. One new axle
half

shaft. One old one but boots are intact. Driveshaft has one weight on it
that I could find.

Someone told me this is the natural vibes of a straight 5 cylinder. Not
sure if i believe that. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Also,

can anyone recommend a good w123 mechanic in the Norman, Moore, Okc area?

Thanks,

Hm... 2007 R is Alpine's NTG2 unit. Dealer is probably insane in price.
What does dead mean? No response at all? No audio? Could be another
component that looks like a head unit problem.

The guys at Becker Auto Sound might be able to fix it or have another unit
to exchange. Otherwise, dealer is the only source. Alpine did some
service, but I'm not sure what they do these days. Maybe outsourced like
everyone else.

Unfortunately, not all of these units are as well supported as the
Harman/Becker units after the warranty is over :-)

Jabba tells me the only rad hoses he can get for the SD are Urotrash,
suggests checking them often after installation. There might be some
OE(M) available but they are likely older rubber, so whether those would
then last any longer than Urotrash is questionable.

Probably the best thing about Gary is his willingness to tell you he
can't or won't get an aftermarket part due to quality issues. One of the
big problem with the mass-market parts retailers is their propensity to
use low quality high margin (for them) parts from Asian supplier, such as
URO. This is why you see such "deals" from these places. Ask them who
the part manufacturer is and you'll understand why.

A good example of his willingness to forego a sale due to quality would
be when I talked to him about front brake rotors for my S500. I can get
OE rotors for $85/each from my local dealer. He can get OEM rotors for
slightly less, maybe $75/each. They are most likely the same, but
understanding that I want guaranteed quality on a brake or suspension
part, he agreed that the OE part was the better way to go in my case.

No.

I have placed two orders with him in the last week. Both were priced very
competitively and arrived on time and correct as ordered. I received
tracking information within 24 hours of placing my order and was not
charged until the parts shipped.

Probably the best thing about Gary is his willingness to tell you he can't

problem with the mass-market parts retailers is their propensity to use
low quality high margin (for them) parts from Asian supplier, such as URO.
This is why you see such "deals" from these places. Ask them who the part
manufacturer is and you'll understand why.

A good example of his willingness to forego a sale due to quality would be
when I talked to him about front brake rotors for my S500. I can get OE
rotors for $85/each from my local dealer. He can get OEM rotors for
slightly less, maybe $75/each. They are most likely the same, but
understanding that I want guaranteed quality on a brake or suspension
part, he agreed that the OE part was the better way to go in my case.

Well, being outside the 4yr/50Kmi warranty.at least they paid
something. How disappointing to have that happen though.

Looking back, any warning/symptoms before the chain let go? I think the
defective chain TSB only covers Jul '92 - Apr '94 built models.

If an original 3.5L OM603 engine has made it 20yrs/150Kmi and currently

Re: [MBZ] I give up!

2013-06-23 Thread ernest breakfield
what model is the gauge in the picture supposed to be for? because 123
547 27 57 is the same P/N as the one in our '85 (Cal) 300D.
since the size of the fuel tanks (and possibly even the final drive
ratio) are different, i find it unlikely that they should be the same.
seems like you might be working with the wrong gauge cluster for that car.

cheers!

1. I purchased an '85 300TD from my brother in 2010 for which he had recently
had the fuel tank replaced in order to pass PA inspection due to rust/leakage
and the fuel gauge started behaving oddly after the fuel tank replacement
(Note: the odd behavior indicates rather quick indicating to the empty mark
when the tank is 1/4-1/2 full).
2. I removed, cleaned and reinstalled the sending unit to no avail. I
purchased a sending unit from the local PNP, managed to break the 40 gauge
(mic'd. at 0.008mm) Nichrome wire, obtained Nichrome wire on the I-net,
repaired both this unit and the original unit, and both behave similarly.
3. I've had two experiences with Ebay sellers where the 1st combi gauge
(temp/fuel/oil pressure) purchased had a temp gauge which was not working and
the 2nd was damaged in shipping due to poor packaging. I obtained a combi gauge
from a 240D at the local PNP and it behaves similarly to the original 300TD
combi gauge. I'm including this last photo here fyi as, considering how many
times I've removed/installed sending units and combi gauges in this vehicle, I
give up.

Re: [MBZ] Rod bender repairs

2013-06-23 Thread Chris James

Well, being outside the 4yr/50Kmi warranty.at least they paid
something. How disappointing to have that happen though.

Looking back, any warning/symptoms before the chain let go? I think the
defective chain TSB only covers Jul '92 - Apr '94 built models.

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/OM60X/OM60x_Timing_Chain_TSB.pdf

If an original 3.5L OM603 engine has made it 20yrs/150Kmi and currently
has no issues, I would think it's safe to assume it not a "Rod bender".
Many did have issues though (usually just outside of the warranty, IIRC)
& I'm not sure if a definite answer of why this was occurring has ever
been found out.

[MBZ] Cyclical vibration

2013-06-23 Thread DC Nichols

Thanks,
Daniel

I doubt you can get them from a parts store but, if you know the size you can
get them from a business that repairs hydraulic cylinders. As a matter of fact
I was able to re-seal the fuel shut off valve on my 95 diesel for a whopping
$1.13 WITH VITON rings. That only saved $120 something bucks!!

Re: [MBZ] ASR Question

2013-06-23 Thread William
The ASD on my 95 diesel does that from time to time. I have pulled up to a
traffic light with it on switched the car off then restarted it and the crazy
light stays off. I figure some ~20 year old sensor isn't reading right. I've
tested the function right after restart with no issue, it functions. So when it
flips out and flys into neutral so to speak I just reset it with a restart.
When that doesn't any longer I'll look into it further.

I called a little while ago, got an answering service woman who said she

I am starting to think I am out $150 and this guy is running some kind of

I called NAPA to get a couple of things, will be there tomorrow, then will

Is it worth $40 a month in fuel to not be riding in a VW?

[MBZ] VW 2004 TDI wagon tail light bulb replacement

2013-06-23 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

Folks,

A friend just purchased a 2004 tdi wagon from some dealer for, i
think, about $8000 which doesn't sound like all that good a price to me.

He brought it by yesterday evening and i drove it around the block, so
to speak, including about a mile of freeway. It's auto and i was
underwhelmed with the car and the performance. It seemed to be a
little peppier when we turned the A/C off.

He had a tail light bulb out, driver's side. Well, it's not exactly
easy to change a bulb on the wagon. You open the interior side
compartment. There's a big chunk of styrofoam in there, maybe to hold
a CD player or something. That gives almost no access to the tail
light. I read around on some forums and no one had any good ideas on
how to change a bulb and the owner's manual doesn't cover it. So, i
removed a barely accessible bolt that allowed the styrofoam chunk to
drop down about 1/4 inch. Then i was able to unclip the big t shaped
plastic bulb holder assembly. I tilted that forward and was able to
remove and install the bulbs on the top that we needed to replace.
Someone previously had broken one of the clips on the tail light
assembly, but it snapped back into place ok.

Small hands are a big help with this job.

Someone on some VW forum had removed the entire tail light assembly,
but that involves several small nuts that are pretty inaccessible.

I'll stick with my 300TD.

thanks,

xx rick
