Re: [MBZ] I *Think* I Bought a Car

2015-04-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Beats me.

He called and left me a voice mail yesterday afternoon. I started listening to
it and only heard "fair" and "$5800". At that point I shut off the phone, as
there was nothing else for me to hear as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sort of "meh" about this car, mainly due to the model year (1996) and it
being at the very top end of my budget. He's had it for sale for at least a
month if not more, and I'm the only person who has shown an interest according
to him. That should be a tell right there about the asking price, and I'm
pretty sure he knows it.

I'm taking Curly's approach and not being in a hurry. I'll find the right car
eventually. If I end up with the S320 from the diplomatic guy in Sarasota I'll
be happy. He gets back on the 9th, which is this coming Thursday. If not,
there will be others, I'm sure.

[MBZ] Email list questions

2015-04-03 Thread Tim Crone
Hi folks,

Has anyone set up their domain email for DKIM and tried to use the mailing
list? Also, do I need to add the mailing list server to my SPF record?

If no one knows I will report tomorrow, when I get the logs back.

Thanks,

[MBZ] OT: non-Mercedes parking question

2015-04-03 Thread Tim Crone
Though I suppose it could apply to recent Mercedes.

I am within a few months of trading the van out for something - Accord or
Camry probably, by the numbers. So I'm thinking about this, and I walk
into the parking lot at the Wal-Mart, and I realize I have no idea how to
find a particular generic car in a sea of generic cars. I've always driven
old or odd vehicles so it has never come up before - I just park, do my
business, and can spot the car/van within a few moments of being outside.

So how does this work? Do you get to where you can differentiate your
silver Camry from the thirty other silver Camrys? Painting the roof orange
is probably not going to happen.

Thanks,

Some years ago I flew into Dulles late at night, went and picked up a
rental car and drove on to the hotel where I parked in the lot. White
Ford Taurus. Next morning I come out and there are like 30 white Tauri
parked in the lot. I finally found it by looking at license plates, the
key tag had the plate number on it. No telling how I would have
determined which was mine if not for that, other than trying a key in
each one which might or might not have found "my" car.

I have that issue with the gray F150 in the lot at Lowes - I put a 2X stake
in each rear corner pocket on the bed. They both make it easier to climb
into the bed, and I'm the only one in the lot with them. A friend hung a
stuffed toy from the rear view mirror in his expedition so he could tell
which one was his. Do something to "make it yours".
On the other hand, friends don't let friends buy/drive Asian junk cars . . .

While on the topic of a new car . . .

"Mercedes-Benz C-Class Named 2016 World Car of the Year"

*The Mercedes-Benz
 C-Class was
officially named the 2016 World Car of the Year today during the New York
Auto Show.*

It edged past the Ford Mustang and the Volkswagen Passat to take the award,
marking the first time in three years that a product from the Volkswagen
Group didn’t get the award. The W205 C-Class is considerably larger than
the W204 generation and is available with either a turbocharged
four-cylinder of six-cylinder engine in the U.S. market.

Of course there is also the high-performance V8-powered AMG model, but
that’s an entirely different animal. Pricing for the C300 kicks off at
$39,325 and for that price you get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
engine powering the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic
transmission. The V6-powered C400 starts at $49,515.

Re: [MBZ] I *Think* I Bought a Car

2015-04-03 Thread Dan Penoff
It comes down to two things:

1.) Setting limits. It's always easy to think, "Just another couple hundred
dollars and I can have this!" That approach often ends up poorly. While I
certainly understand that reaching beyond expectations for a one-time deal or
something that far exceeds what I was really looking for is a possibility, I
try to stick to my guns when I set a price limit. Doing otherwise is a
decision you're going to deal with every time you see the car and get behind
the wheel. I don't care for that kind of angst, thank you.

2.) The willingness to walk away. Just as we spoke about this recently with
someone's car purchase (Rich?) the willingness to walk away is a strong
incentive for the motivated seller. Will the "Goodfellows" guy come back and
meet my price? Maybe. Knowing we were within $300 dollars has got to be a
motivation for him, especially if he's serious about selling. If so, he'll call
me back. If not, I know where I stand and am comfortable in my decision as to
the value of the car (to me.). If I decide to relent later I now know his
price, if he's willing to sell at that point.

There's a really good book on negotiating that I read some years back. I was
also sent to the course the author still teaches, I believe. It's called,
"Negotiate to Close" by Alex Karras. Lots of really good information that can
be applied to many different situations.

Most likely, especially if they're exactly equal. Not sure

Re: [MBZ] Lost Titles

2015-04-03 Thread Jim Cathey
Does anyone know of a relatively painless way to get a title for a
vehicle?

Highly State-dependent. In WA, the total cost (for an abandoned car,
the

Frankenheap) was the price of a certified delivery State form letter to
the last owner of record. (I filled it out, and mailed it.) It
bounced,
which was the best possible outcome. I took that, _unopened_, along
with

my bill of sale to the licensing agent. That's all it took, plus the
usual tax and fees for any car sale. In this case (10yo CA plates)
there was an out-of-State inspection/fee, which is mostly checking
VIN numbers. $50, at that time.

I wasn't about to spend serious money washing a title for
that $100 car!

Since I'm hearing nothing of injuries to yourself or family, may I presume
the car did it's job and protected all on board? If the carnage is all
machinery, then, while I feel your loss of a good car friend, I'm glad you
all survived, hopefully unharmed.

Hello All:

Tragically someone sideswiped and totaled my 1995 E320 Wagon. The right
side and all bumpers are destroyed. The left side, interior and
mechanicals are all functioning, as well as all heating and air
conditioning items. They will allow me to keep if for a certain
consideration.. Just wanted to find out if anyone needed any items from
this vehicle, and if so if it would cover the cost of keeping it for
parts...

Let me know please..

We're all glad it did its job and protected everyone inside.

That is one "why I drive a Mercedes Benz" and an important one.
From your earlier posts, I thought perhaps it was parked when
sideswiped.

Is it driveable if it had bumpers put on? It kinda sounds like it
is. Do the right doors open and close?

Actually, its going fairly poorly valued it $3078. Refuse to move on the
value at all.. It is drive able.. The doors are bent fairly far outward
on the passenger side, I can go try to open them if anyone is interested..
Tranny only has about 80K on it. rest of the car is at 205K

[MBZ] 2004 Golf TDI

2015-04-03 Thread Peter Frederick

I just got delivery of my nephew's 2004 Golf TDI, so I guess I'll be
finding out how I like VW diesels.

My brother (who lives in Washington State) has had a Jetta TDI for a
while now, gets 52 mpg on the highway, sometimes 55, so I'm eager to
find out what sort of milage I get running to and from work.

I'll get the title and insurance straightened out next week and report
back. Purrs like a kitten, and my brother in law who drove it over
today from St. Louis says it runs fine.

125k miles, looks pretty good -- lowest milage car I've bought for a
while, and enough years newer than my 88TE that I may not need to
replace it before I retire.

Life is always an adventure!

Nope, the McPherson strut appeared in the 116, then the 123. The 124/201
introduced the multi-link rear suspension.

Wasn't that the W124? The W116, W123, and W126 all have a similar
front suspension, and it is NOT a McPherson strut.

The strut is actually a very nice suspension, eaiser to make, easier
to maintain, and if intelligently designed, provides very good
handling. It provides zero or negative offset without the expensive
cast components used in the earlier zero offset designs.

Looking at another S320. Haven't had a chance to see it in person, but in the
photos I noticed this on the seat trim with the lumbar adjuster.

Is this for orthopedic seats, and if so, how does it work?

Make sure the timing belt has been changed. It is an interference engine.
Job is a PITA on that one. The front end must come off, IIRC.
Also the intake collects carbon from the EGR. It can be disabled
with the correct software (VAGCOM I think).
Good car. My friend got 250k miles on his before he traded it off
for a Honda Accord Coupe. Not as solid as a Mercedes, but not
bad. There are a couple good forums for these cars, too.

Oh yeah, only use synthetic diesel oil. My friend used nothing but
Shell Rotella T-6.

Re: [MBZ] the "club"

2015-04-03 Thread Curly McLain
Wasn't that the W124? The W116, W123, and W126 all have a similar
front suspension, and it is NOT a McPherson strut.

The strut is actually a very nice suspension, eaiser to make, easier
to maintain, and if intelligently designed, provides very good
handling. It provides zero or negative offset without the expensive
cast components used in the earlier zero offset designs.

Peter

Thanks Peter. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how
a 123 front is called a mcpherson strut. The 124 is for sure. I
think the definition of a mcpherson strut is the spring around the
shock as a load bearing component, where earlier systems in MB had a
mostly non-load bearing shock, (bears weight in the lb it takes to
compress the gas pressure shock.) and a coil spring between the UCA
or body and the LCA.

REF: according to misiam-webster:

Definition of MACPHERSON STRUT
: a component of an automobile suspension consisting of a shock
absorber mounted within a coil spring

Actually, its going fairly poorly valued it $3078. Refuse to move on the
value at all.. It is drive able.. The doors are bent fairly far outward
on the passenger side, I can go try to open them if anyone is interested..
Tranny only has about 80K on it. rest of the car is at 205K

Peter

Tell them firmly they will replace it with one of equal or better
value, or pay you enough to replace it with one of equal value and
your time, or they can meet in court, and have their shenanigans
documented on the internet.

Hold your ground and don't be in a hurry to settle, don't take any
check except for full settlement.

I'm sure you know all this , but it does not hurt to have reinforcements.

If they have a local office, go in frequently and remind them they
have not made a fair offer yet, and ask for a fair offer.

the $3000 is probably low tradein in some book. That is not what you

Re: [MBZ] OT: non-Mercedes parking question

2015-04-03 Thread Curly McLain

Thanks,
Tim

OK, I was wrong, the 116, 123, and 126 do not have a McPherson strut. I've
been calling them that for years now. Either way, they do not have double
wish bone front suspensions, which I think is the proper way to control the
front wheels.

[MBZ] Missed treasure

2015-04-03 Thread clay
Yesterday I was visiting my local PnPs. First, Row52 is not as up to date on
what is in the yard. Not all yards use Row52. It is so useful to have a
listing of what is in the yard so you do not waste your time not finding a car
when you visit.

First yard was barren. At least of Benz iron. There were a dozen on the app,
but only two in the yard. And the old ones from Row52 were gone. There are
three rows just waiting for new cars... but no benz in the pen. So I checked
out the new to the neighborhood yard next door. Pretty lame with maybe three
dozen cars en toto. I was needing a brake reservoir cap, and a few other tiny
bits. No joy in those two yards, so i whip out the smart phone and load the
app to see what may be new to some other yards. There was a 79 SD in the yard,
as well as a 83 D. I figured the SD would have a viable transmission and maybe
the little bits. They did have the cap, but some goon had destroyed the
transmission by sticking something overly sharp into the bands.

The injectors were still there and nobody had trashed to much under the hood.
I did get the valve cover off, as well as the hard injector lines. For some
reason, I did not have the 27mm socket that is always in the tool box, so I was
not able to get my hands on the injectors. Having a matched set of injectors
would be great, but not being able to snag the injectors, I did not need the
lines. Damn yard charges too much for parts anyway. The valve cover set me
back a bundle, because they charge double for aluminum over steel.

Tonight I went through a drive through, and the young woman taking
money asked what year my rusty ol SDL is. She said she thought it
was an 87. I was impressed. She only missed by a year, and the car
is older than her. I told her then asked if she liked Mercedes. She
said she did. I told her they are safe, and MB invented the crumple
zone and patented it in 1951, and started crash testing long before
the US ever thought of it. Hadta go then because there was another
car behind.

Must be spring... I don't expect my rusty old beater to get positive
comments. Especially not 2 on two days.

[MBZ] Clean your drain holes

2015-04-03 Thread clay
Spring cleaning check list item. I was getting a wet passenger footwell and
thought it may have been from using the coin op wash wand and dislodged
something. It dried up and I parked the car 180* from standard. Then, it
rained a goodly amount and the carpet got wet again. That means it was not
resolved, so I pop the hood again and use a flashlight all over to see what is
plugged up. The air scoop on that side was hosting a large sloshing puddle.
I got up under it and poked my finger in the weep hole. Like a pregnant woman
whose water breaks splashes out and drains it all.

Change your fuses too.

A woman came into the PnP office yesterday. Her car was an E350, next to my
S430. She asked if they would take scrap cars off the property she just
purchased. They advised her to send a form to last known owner and if there
were no answer in two weeks, she could file with the state for ownership and
title. Five weeks later, she can sell them to the yard.

Re: [MBZ] 1995 E 320 Wagon

2015-04-03 Thread Curly McLain

They did a valuation through a company called CCC which took every E320
wagon on auto trader. compared mileage options and supposed conditions. I
tried to tell her to just replace the car but she said they don't do that,
take this or leave it basically...

Give em a couple weeks, unless you have a lawyer relative or buddy
that will send them a nastygram threat. If you have a lawyer in
hand, send the nastygram now.

The older the case becomes, the more anxious to settle it they get.
Most inscos have alarms that go off after 30 days.

Practice saying NO! NO! NO1 NO!

Tell them firmly they will replace it with one of equal or better value,
or pay you enough to replace it with one of equal value and your time, or
they can meet in court, and have their shenanigans documented on the
 internet.

Hold your ground and don't be in a hurry to settle, don't take any check
except for full settlement you are satisfied with

Their game is to wear you down. Your patience will wear them down,
and the more tired of the game they get, the higher the amount of the
check gets.

Now is a good time to get a neck pain as a result of the accident and
go to the doc.

And when the weather is good enough to put the car up and crawl
under, you need to blow out or ream out the drain hoses for the Air
cond before you crank up the Air cond for the season.

Clean
1. Hood/fiirewall drains
2. cowl drains, if present
3. sunroof drains, if present
4. trunk hinge well drains
5. trunk/hatch gasket
6. pockets in the firewall/inner fender area

At least in spring and fall.
