Since there was a picture of many circuit boards, it would give the

2011-01-19 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hello David,

For 2x multiplexing, use about 1.4 times the recommended cathode current
for continuous use.

Re: [neonixie-l] recommendation for anode resistor for 2x2 multiplexed IN-14s @166-170v?

2011-01-20 Thread Dieter Waechter

Ah, ok. Thanks David
I have built a µC controlled muxing tester... will put all about it on
my homepage soon. I can switch from direct drive with rated current to
muxed, with higher current and compare the glow. That makes it easy to
find out the muxing current for a tube to get approx the same glow
effect as in direct drive.

But with 1.4 x rated currrent the glow looks a bit dimmed.
That was why i asked.
I'm working on a chart for these factors, but the problem is that it
depends to the tube size also (I think)...

I think a general factor is not easy to tell.
If a primer is used, than everything changes again.
Dieter

It's an educated guess. I used 3x current for 6 way multiplexing in the
clocks I made, so 1.4x seems reasonable for 2 way. It takes
experimentation to find the best value, and there is a tradeoff of tube
life vs brightness.

Re: [neonixie-l] IN-3 dot Nixie flickering experiences?

2011-03-01 Thread Dieter Waechter
Dieter, some of them flicker, and some don't with DC voltage. It's more
of a periodic pulsation, where the plasma moves back and forth around the
cathode/anode. Some lamps don't do this at all, some do it after a few
hours of being on.

Thanks Gene, that helps A LOT!!!

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: IN-3 dot Nixie flickering experiences?

2011-03-01 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi Dieter,

I used them in one project as a minor component. They were OK, but
rather variable. I did not see flickering, but problems with the glow
sometimes moving around slowly within the tube and sometimes getting
fixed in odd places. Changing the current didn't help much, merely
altered the size/intensity of the glow.

It helps to get the polarity right (per discussion in other thread),
but some IN-3 would just never behave well for me.

Cheers,

Jon.

So now I am sure: these won't sit in the CD47 colon tubes.
Thank you very much!

Hello Jon and all other who asked:
Yes the brighness is enough.
This clock is only a unique specimen. I have not intended to build more
since production costs are high and my E1T tubes stock is not very high.
But I can sell AVR controllers and tubes for the clock and send the eagle

I also can send drawings for the clock if anyone is interested.

2011-06-02 Thread Dieter Waechter
Out curiosity, do you think that this zeal to purchase rare tubes extends
to the similarly-rare F9020AA? We may see a bunch of them becoming
available on ebay soon, owing to the recent discovery of a large lot at an
estate sale.

I don't know - but the tastes differ! I - for example - don't like the flat
shape of the F9020AA. These are mor for collecting than making a clock with
them (in my mind) - so I would not pay more than 50 EUR each. But I know -
others will pay much much more.

Yes, the newspaper was the only packing - the tubes were close packed
in pathetic boxes in batches of 100 or so. It almost made me weep.

Some years ago I also have received a package with 300 B-7971 tubes. about
150 were broken.
The look was exactly the same as your picture.
They were wapped in newspapers, and then glass on glass in boxes without any
padding material - and then shipped over the ocean from USA to Germany.
TERRIBLE!

Yes of course. There is only one right answer.

The blus spot is the mercury glowing if Ucc is too low.
All you need to do is drive the tubes without applying an Ucc at all.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Nixie tube photographing

2011-07-15 Thread Dieter Waechter

Thanks for the possible explanation Dieter. Does this fit with the fact
that the same tube shows the same defect on just one digit in multiple
different IN-18 clocks?

First: Note that it is NOT a defect. It is a wrong driver circuit. The
mistake is made by the circuit designer, not by the tube.

Now the answer:
Yes and no.
If you try the same tube in a correct designed clock (nixiechron, or
nocrotec IN-18 clocks for example) 100% no IN-18 will show a blue spot.

But, another mistake always is made with the IN-18 tubes.
This is the rated current.
To get a real high definition readout and the magic purple haze the
tubes MUST be driven with 6mA, what is the REAL rated current of IN-18
tubes. And of course they should not be multiplexed.
The only clocks I know ad hoc wich drive them without multiplex, without
Ucc and with 6mA are the Chronotronix IN-18-V2, the Nocrotec IN-18-V3
and the soon coming clock kits: IN-18-V4 and V5. But I'm sure there are
some other clocks out there.

So be careful: a blue spot means that the driver circuit IS WRONG!

That's good to know. I'll try the offending tube in my Nixiechron to see
if the blue spot dares to show it's ugly face!

It can not appear there, since Jeff does not apply any Ucc.
The cathodes are switched from 170V to zero.
He uses real high voltage supertex drivers, no clamped drivers (like
74141 are, for example).

I hope you have not changed the circuitry, Jeff ;-)

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Nixie tube photographing

2011-07-15 Thread Dieter Waechter

But Michail,
If you want the blue spot on every IN-18 just clamp to a lower Ucc
If it appears or not depends to the mercury amount in the tube and the
Ucc voltage level.

That's all.
You also can fade in and out the blue spot if you like... no problem.
When I have time I take a short video with my Nixie Tube Tester.
My tester has an adjustable Ucc as you surely know, and by adjusting it
the blue spot fades in, and out, and dissapears.
This does not only work with IN-18 tubes, also with some other mercury
filled tubes.

2011-07-15 Thread Dieter Waechter

If it is the circuit that causes the problem, then why do some tubes
exhibit this and other don't.

As I said: because of the amount of mercury.
Some tubes have more, some have less mercury.
That's all.
Some have such less, that also if you go down to 40 Volts Ucc the spot
does not appear.
Jürgen has found one example on which they have forgotton to heat the
giver pill and this example had no mercury at all.
Unfortunately Jürgen heated it up, without taking a picture of the full

Looks great though. :)

PS. Had issues trying to actually get pricing through the website. When I
look for clock, it shows cost of $0.00. Even reselected US dollar. Added
to cart. Went to look for case (must buy tubes with it - uhhg), and it had
shown US dollar amount, but when adding to cart (trying to find shipping
amount), that it was a cart on the website, instead of the paypal cart that
was used for the clock kit itself. So, I thought the item was deleted and
went back to add clock, which then had shown 2 clock kits and no case/bulb.
:(

I gave up realizing it was too expensive for me anyway. Still, looks great

So, I have to order from two different places. That explains the two
different cart issues.

You need to order from me:
  http://snipurl.com/2248nvp
  US$ 560.10 (incl. 19 % VAT) excl. Shipping costsa

  179,00 EUR
(incl. 19% tax excl. Shipping costs)

  179e = 237dollar

  That's $797 already. I just figured out $50 shipping.

So, even with your links, I am still seeing $850

This is not a complaint. I am just letting you know that dealing with the
site, different carts put a bad taste in my mouth. Basically a hint that when
I want to buy something, I don't want to have to deal with multiple
issues/sites just trying to get my cart loaded to pay.

Just a suggesting that it be made easier. If I wanted my wife (so to speak)
to buy it for me, she would have given up long before I did and just told me to
buy it myself.
Most people want a flat option: product, price, add to cart, pay.

The triangle is a very very important sign for Nixie tube collectors.
in short:
No trinangle: pilot lot (rare tube)
1 in triangle: quality category 1 (best quality)
2 in triangle: quality category 2 (low quality)
= in triangle: bad tolerances (only for no-name products ect.)
S in triangle: special release

There are some more interesting signs - I will explain later in a special

The purple, pinkish or peachy haze comes from the different additional gases
and the mercury inside the tube.
You may find out from the spectrum (in some cases) what mixture is in the
tube.
Second, the lower the Ucc (cold cathode voltage) the higher the haze. And
the more blurred the glow.
IN extreme cases (Ucc too low) the haze become ghost spots in the tube
(known as the blue spot problem at IN-18 tubes)
To get a high definition readout, ot the best you can get out of the tube,
drive it without Ucc in direct drive.

Hi!
What I mean is: To get a high definition readout and the best you can
get out of the tube, drive it without Ucc AND drive it with direct drive.

Dieter

This confuses me a bit, I thought you promoted your new clock as being
direct drive and now you say you get the best results without direct
 drive. Am I missing something?

Thanks Dave,
;-)
No problem, I'm far above any childish comments. I forgot the U is not so
well known at Neonixie.

U = the formula symbol according to DIN 1304 for the Voltage.
Dieter

Don't know who is worse here.
Dieter for first stating 'Ucc' (I think maybe we are talking Vcc?)
Regardless Ucc had been taken to mean something cold cathode voltage Have
you not bothered to read the entire thread?

Me for repeating the same (or maybe just being naive)
Or 3 useless replies 2 of which are sarcastic, and one mocking the
'Invention' word which I thought we had finished with!

Do you not wish to help anyone out? Do you not have anything to add,
informational or knowledgeable wise? If not why answer? Just to mock? And I
notice you did not jump all over Deiter when he said Second, the lower the
Ucc (cold cathode voltage) the higher the haze

Talk about childish! Sorry I posted.

Re: [neonixie-l] Question on haze around nixie digit

2012-02-16 Thread Dieter Waechter

The voltage measured from GND to the switched off cathodes.
At dircet drive, the Ukk is equal to Ua (Ua = Va = Up = Vp = Anode voltage
= Supply voltage = Plate voltage)

Not necessarily - if you're direct driving them with 74141 chips, Ucc
would be about 60 volts, and with K155ID1 chips, about 100 volts. Aside
from those, yes, the off cathodes would be allowed by most drivers to
float, and they'd tend to float to the anode voltage (which isn't always
the supply voltage, but the maintaining voltage if another cathode is lit
and there is an anode resistor). I realize that's pretty pedantic of me,
but it's easy to get confused about what your circuit is actually doing
unless you're aware of these various effects.

Oh yes John, thanks for that comment.
You are right of course.
I must clarify again:
(note that this is my own language ;-) - For the ones who don't like it -
please tell me how you would name it, or ignore it)

a) When I speak of direct drive I always mean 1 high voltage transistor
for each cathode, without any Zener diodes.

b) When I speak of clamped direct drive I mean 1 low voltage transistor
for each cathode, with Zener diodes for clamping. (74141 ect.)

c) When I speak of multiplex drive I mean 1 high voltage transistor for
each cathode group, without any Zener diodes, multiplexed

d) When I speak of clamped multiplex drive I mean 1 low voltage transistor
for each cathode group, with Zener diodes for clamping, multiplexed (74141
multiplexed for example - the worst drive ever)

Note that this is all not valid for biquinary Nixie tubes of course, but for
standard nixie tubes

Re: [neonixie-l] Cathode equalizing resistors?

2012-03-26 Thread Dieter Waechter
Well, the higher the anode voltage you use, the less important are the
equalizing resistors.
For the CD47 250V are recommended at the datasheet, and this voltage
equalizes the cathode current automtically.

Hi,

I stumbled across cathode equalizing resistors in the GR10G
datasheet (http://www.jb-electronics.de/html/elektronik/nixies/
n_gr10g.htm?lang=en). They say 8k2 and 4k7 resistors are required to
account for the smaller size of 1 and 7.

Have you seen equalizing resistors mentioned for other tubes than the
GR10G?

Although I have never read about those in other datasheets or web
sites about nixies, to me equalizing resistors sound like a very good
idea. I guess they will increase tube live and I think I will add them
in case I ever build driver boards for my CD47s or Z5680Ms.

It's a well known problem with the 1916's.
I have about 500 NIB, and most of them show that problem.
Most need a high firing voltage (200 V and up) and some are completely dead.
The only thing I can imagine is gas leakage.
I have experienced that problem on some other American made tubes, but oddly
ONLY at American made tubes (I recall National and Raytheon).

Over the last few months I have bought a number of parcels of IV11s
from an ebay seller who regularly posts them in lots of 100. They
arrived well packed and without difficulties so I had no worries when
asked to buy a batch directly. I bought 2 further parcels through ebay
after that direct purchase which arrived OK but no sign of the batch
bought directly.
I opened a paypal case and was told it would be sorted out 'we have
traded many times trust us' so I let the claim lapse. Of course
nothing arrived and requests for tracking numbers for that parcel have
been unanswered so I'm out of pocket for 100x IV11 tubes.
I've also now been blocked from bidding on their items which has the
effect of preventing me contacting the seller through ebay.

Very disappointing as it was such a small purchase, why bother doing
that for less than $80?..

Also, Dieter: On May 16 you have warned us about this seller. But they
started at Ebay only one day earlier on May 15! How comes? What am I

Well, you see I am well-informed about that very quickly.
The reason is that I have friends in Russia and Ukrain.
And I think I know all important tube sellers there.
All of those are honest people, and they know abut the new scam coming up
with Nixie tubes.
The sellers already know that this is poison for their business and they
claim it aswell.
One of these looks like he knows more about that - and he immediately
informs me about new actions of the gang.
I'm counting on all honest Ukrain sellers - and I hope they will help me
stopping the gang.

It must be done from there - not from outside.
I can't tell you more about it, since I'm not sure who is listening here.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Attention!! NEW Nixie tube cheater at Ebay!!!

2012-05-17 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi!

Paypal will only be able to take the money back if it is still in the
account.

Are you sure?
I think they can take the money back.
If there is no balance in the account, and Paypal decides to refund to the
buyer, the balance of the receiver will get negative.

Am I right?

So, such a scam works in that he sells item. You pay for it. He pulls
money out. A month later, you realize you aren't getting product, so you
file a claim. Judgement is in your favor, but unfortunately, there is no
money to get back. So, you win, but get nothing.

Can anyone confirm that?

This is not to say that the seller could get a tracking number on a
shipment to you with an empty box. I have had this happen a few times as
well. Paypal simply denied my claim, but at least I got a couple of
pretty boxes which are empty. Many possible scams.

I can also not confirm that.
I have had a broken Super high voltage power supply with a small defect. I
proofed it with a video, and got back half of the money of my own estimation
of what the unit is worth with the defect.
If an empty box would have been sent (never had that) - I think Paypal surey
would refund.

The trick of the gangsters is different (see my recent emails for the
explination)

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Attention!! NEW Nixie tube cheater at Ebay!!!

2012-05-17 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi!

My point is that YOU (as a seller) will NOT get the money.

Well, but I am the buyer

I can create a second email account. aol/yahoo/gmail, etc. Use a stolen
credit card, buy a clock from you. 2 months later, a charge back happens
from the CC company to paypal. Paypal then charges against the account.
The fake paypal account is then stopped, but you can't collect because it
would have been from a stolen card (chargeback) - This is why bitcoin is
being saught after. Even dwolla payments now have chargebacks (they
changed their TOS because they used to say no chargebacks).

Hm. I had this case also (here as a seller), and the Paypal seller
protection gave me back the money, since I sent the package registered, to a
confirmed Address, within the given time period.
But I know - you are right - if one of these 3 things do not apply, Paypal
will not give you back the money.

Issue is we are comparing legit negative balance to scam negative balance.

A scammed negative doesn't matter. The person scammed can't collect from a
scammer.

Like Jens said. He bought ebay stuff. Now, if he didn't wire money into his
account (if he was a scammer), he still would have received the stuff he bought
on ebay, and not have paid anything. Those people would have been scammed.
Paypal would have taken the money back from them. They would not have the
product or the money.

  Michail

Your PayPal account can have a negative balance if:

a.. You tried to make a payment with your bank account, but the payment
didn't go through.
b.. There wasn't enough money in your PayPal account to cover a purchase.
c.. An unauthorized payment was made from your PayPal account.
d.. We issued a refund from your account to cover a buyer complaint.
e.. We reversed a payment that wasn't eligible for PayPal Seller
Protection.

I can confirm that, happened to me some time ago:

I used a separate bank account for all my Ebay stuff (and this was the

I paid with PayPal for some auction the money got sent but I got a
notification that my bank account (the one I used for PayPal) was not
covered, so I had a negative balance. PayPal gave me two weeks to wire
money to my account in order to even out the negative balance.

G'day Folks!

It's been about 4 1/2 months since I had a eureka moment of how to
design and make my Nixie Watch. It is finally there and guess what, I
am wearing it :-).

I know some people on this forum showed some initial doubts, which I
can totally understand, but I finally have something to show.

Initially I gave it the name Cold War as the nixie tubes come from
that age, however, my wife re-named it yesterday to Blue Magic,
which describes very well to what it actually is :-).

Have a look, all comments very welcome!

Im not saying the pictures are bad, its just that the glass has really unique
reflections, i think its because of the angle the photos are shot at. The one
gray reflection on the top of the tubes looks just too precise, also those
circles at the bottom of the tube look just bit too perfect, hope it makes

A friend of mine is interested in it.
Thanks
Dieter
