[Nighthawk Lovers] 1986 Nighthawk S for sale (CB 700SC)

2011-06-05 Thread Greg
I'm live in the SF Bay Area and am looking to sell my '86 Nighthawk S.
Anyone 1) know what they're going for in good condition (perfect
running shape, OK cosmetic shape) and 2) anyone interested in buying
it? I'm just starting my homework regarding selling it, so...

thanks,

Greg

[Nighthawk Lovers] engine removal

2013-12-06 Thread Greg
Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the engine off of a 91 750
nighthawk? Is there a trick, or a certain side to tilt the engine to? Does it
require the valve cover removal? Thanks in advance!

then lift the frame off the engine.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers]

2014-01-27 Thread Greg
Officially? Ummair leak tester? It's just a stetoscope with some tubing
and a piece of pipe. I had a leak when I reinstalled my pipes, and over
tightening or stripping the aluminum heads is not a good idea. Brutal strength
is not always the answer. Anyway a friend suggested this tool and it worked
great. I was able to pinpoint the leak at the correct pipe. I checked all of
them anyway and one was just off a little bit. I just loosened the bolts moved
the pipe a little and re tightened it. I've had the muffler sealant for years
and I just put a little on to hold the seals in place.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Starter clutch

2014-04-25 Thread Greg

Javier, removing the motor seems like too much work and struggle, untill you've
done it. I've taken out the motor in my 91 750 and it wasn't as bad as I
thought. It's just a lot of wrenching. I did it by myself too. Took it out one
day, worked on it and put it back together the next day. I did take a lot of
pictures in the process to make sure that I put it back correctly. If you have
a friend to help, it's even better. I must say I was relieved when I got it
started after reassembly. Of course I speak for myself and we all know
ourselves and our limitations. Believe you me, there are things beyond my
aptitude and I leave those to people who know what they are doing. Is it worth
all the work and doing it right? You know the answer. Take it to a shop, or
invite a few friends and get it done in one day. These bikes are worth it!

So apparently the starter clutch went bad on the 85 NH 700s. The starter seem
to be spinning freely. I just looked at the manual and it calls for engine
removal as step 1. Ouch. And then you need to to basically disassemble the
whole thing to get there. Has anyone here ever done this job? are there are
short cuts? Any advice is appreciated.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Starting issue.

2014-10-17 Thread Greg
Hey gang! I had an issue today and I am trying to get some input on how to
remedy it. Bike is a 91 cb 750. 49000miles. Going on 8yrs with me. I was trying
to leave today and the bike wouldn't start. I turned the key, and the indicator
lights came on as usual but when I hit the starter button all I heard was a
click. Then the lights went off. The "click" came from the "box" to which the
positive lead from the battery goes to. From the "box" then the wires separate
to four smaller wires. I looked at the fuse in the plug with the four wires,
(30a) and it was fine. It took me about 10 tries, then the bike started fine as
usual. Thanks for any help in advance!

Might contact Motion Pro. They make aftermarket, good quality cables, they can

I recommend you not upgrade to a brighter bulb. I wouldn't want to blind other
drivers, and with a normal bulb, you can turn on your high beam when you need
it. If you have a brighter bulb, you can never dim it
I will sometimes turn on my high beam during the day if people seem to drive as
though they can't see me, but having an extra bright headlight at night creates
a hazard when you temporarily blind other drivers.

Ray,

The size is the metric one, from your set, that fits. 6mm is a popular size
for these bikes.
I looked in the manual and cannot find a torque setting. For me, this means
try and approximate the torque required to remove. German torque would likely
apply here. (Gutentight). Remember, you can always tighten more if there are
leaks, not so if you over tighten and break something. Since I have a 700S
also, I am scared as hell about wrong length of bolts. So..take out and
replace from/to the exact same hole. Gasket seal seems to be the preference.

The Hodge mod is a must then, unless you go for the jet kit. I have a jet kit
with a k&n air filter and the Mac exhaust. Your fuel economy will suffer
though. I get around 42 in the city. Highway? 36 to 40 depending on how you
ride. Of course the higher the rpm, the worse the mpg. I would start with the
hodge mod and see how you like it. This way you can keep everything stock. Even
with the stage 1 jet kit, you can keep the stock pipes.

That's reassuring, I will likely invest in a kit then, as I would rather be

itching to drill the baffles out and get some more sound. Before any of this

eliminate the horrible nosediving when braking. Thanks for the help!

all. Lucky me?

My 2003 Nighthawk 750 gets stuck floats if I leave it for more than a week
without riding it. I've had the carbs rebuilt and synchronized, and I switched
to ethanol-free fuel, but it remains to be an issue. It just demands to be
ridden at least once a week.

To resolve the issue, I suggest dumping a can of Seafoam or other carb cleaner
in the tank after siphoning as much old fuel out as possible and then top it
off with fresh fuel. Then tap the carbs with a screwdriver handle to see if
you can free the stuck floats. If none of that helps, the surefire way I've
gotten the floats unstuck is to strap the motorcycle to a trailer and take it
for a drive. All the bounding around helps free up the floats. Your only
other option is to ride it, putting fresh clean fuel in the tank as often as
possible. The dripping gas seems dangerous, but when it happens to my bike, it
only drips gas at idle. With the throttle open, it seems to stop dripping gas.

front forks. The front end seals are likely due for replacement anyway. Can
anyone please recommend upgrade kits? My motorcycle mechanic works out of his

Not hard at all, at least if you have the center stand and can unload the rear
suspension. Pull the seat, a bolt up top, another at the bottom, and remove.

The usual suspects supply their usual quality. Progressive Suspension has a
direct fit set that works fairly well, can't recall the part number off the top

Double check your oil level, and make sure your chain is clean and not too

Mine made a distinct ticking noise when I had the chain tightened too much.

All four stems on my 91 NH 750 are cracked. Like you I don't want to buy new
ones. My homemade solution was to get 2 or 3 nails the same length as the stem
and wrap black electrical tape around them against the stem to provide
stiffness and support. I first tried to repair the cracks with silicone caulk
but it wasn't stiff enough.

the worst case, I will just turn them upside down and reverse them L-R so the
crack is on the bottom, but I'd rather put on a new one if I could source it.

10 to 15lbs lbs on the torque. When you take the bolts out, you will see that
you can only go so far. You definately need dressing. Top and bottom. You can
buy heX sockets. Easy enough job though.

The rubber bolt covers come out easily. I think I used a small flathead.

As the subject line says, I'm thinking of changing the valve cover gasket
because it's been leaking a little bit on the left rear side. Now a good
tightening may fix or reduce the problem to the point that it's a non-issue,
but I've got a couple of questions.

1. Those are just plastic plugs in the bolts, right? Is there a clean way of
getting them out without damaging them?
2. If I re-torque the bolts, how do I know when I've got it right? I just
looked at the manual, chapter seven, and it doesn't seem to mention anything
about torque. It's all matter-of-fact, as in removal order: bolts, sealing
washer, bolts, gasket. That's about it.
3. Any recommendations on suppliers, brands, etc?
4. Any dressing for the new gasket, upper side and lower?
5. How do I know how much torque I've got on an allen wrench, anyway?

Anybody done this? For those who don't know me, Ol' Yeller is a '96 750

The drum gets pretty messy inside after a while. Mine was also sticking, I
opened it, clean everything until it was shinny and all parts moved freely,
then applied some grease where it needs to go (not to the drum itself!), and
that was it.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Buying an '83 Nighthawk 650

2015-03-15 Thread Greg
If I may, buying a bike is the best purchase I've ever made. It will give you
the best return for your money. I bought one for my 30th birthday. My wife and
3 kids supported me. My daughter passed her motorcycle class at 15and 1/2 years
old. The person at the DMV was confused when giving her the license at 16. Be a
good Dad and teach your kids about life and living it and loving it. A bike
will do all that and much more.

Tommy that is good french!

J'habite à Mirabel, près de Montréal!

Every year, just before spring, the itch to go get a motorcycle gets me.
I've been wanting to ride for 18 years, but was too broke/stupid back then
and would have killed myself (I loved speeding in my car, was going to buy
a VFR750 without taking any motorcycle lessons...)

Then about 9 years ago, I told my girlfriend I wanted to buy a motorcycle.
She laughed as she asked me what I was going to do with that since we were
expecting a baby. Then came another baby a few years later. I'd try every
year, but she kept telling me it'll have to wait until the kids have grown
up and left the house :(

Finally, last year, we were on the highway with the kids sleeping in the
back of the car. It was the 1st warm weekend of the season and we were
getting passed by lots and lots of bikes. Now every spring, I'd lookup
bikes, how much they cost, insurance, license, lessons, etc... My wife (we
had married) tells me maybe could get a motorcycle sooner. I told her I was
thinking more about now than sooner. She asked me how much it costs to get
a motorcycle, and after I told her all of it, she said "Well, if you get
one, I want one too!" Couldn't be more blessed!

[Nighthawk Lovers] Tire size

2015-04-04 Thread Greg
So, I'm looking for new tires for my 91 750, and liking the BT T30s. The only
thing is that the rear comes in a 150 70 17. I know it will fit, but is it a
good idea? If not, I'll just go with the usual BT 45s. Just trying to see if it
would be a better tire. Thanks.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Hard Bags for '96 Nighthawk

2015-04-28 Thread Greg
I used L shaped pieces of aluminum to make my own. I replaced the shock
mounting bolts for longer ones and put a long threaded bolt to go through where
the rear turn signals mount. Those are attached to the frame. I had nuts to
hold the long bolt in place where the signals were. It was maybe a foot long.
I'm probably calling it a wrong name, but any hardware store will have it. Then
I made a flat bracket to hold the two pieces together to look like a mounting
plate for a trunk. I bent the L shaped pieces to follow the curve of the rear
end. That is why I used aluminum. Plus it's light. Once you put the hard bags
on, you won't even see the brackets. I made my own hard bags from discarded
street signs. U, pretty? Not me, sorry. But very useful.

[Nighthawk Lovers] No headlight.

2015-05-24 Thread Greg
Hey gang! I'm having a problem with my headlight not coming on. 91 cb 750.
50,000miles. I've had the occasional no headlight on over the years when
starting, but I'd just turn the key off and on, and it would come on. Then last
week it would not come on, but the high beam worked for a little while. Then
nothing. Fuses are good All the "dash" lights come on. I have two bulbs to
check with at the headlight. I've looked at the wires behind the starter
button. They look solid. Any advice?

HI Greg,
Have you checked that the bulb is functional? You can connect it directly to a
battery charger if you have one. In mine case the filament was perfect, but the
connections in the bulb got bad. It will come on sometimes if I giggle with onw
of the three leads, but I just had to replace it.You can also test for voltage
right at the wires that connect to the bulb. See if you are getting power.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] ongoing brake problem

2015-06-11 Thread Greg

Mel, the only way I was able to remove the air from my new brake line was to
attach a small hose to the release valve on the caliper, to a contact solution
(big one) bottle filled with brake fluid, and squeeze. Squeeze harrrd. Nothing
else worked for me. Finally all the bubbles came out at the same time.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] ongoing brake problem

Hiya guys,

So I rebuilt my sticky brake calipers. Everything looked good there - and
by that I mean that it looked awful before I rebuilt it. Once I finished
cleaning everything and put the new seals in, the pistons slid home
smoothly and I remounted the caliper. However, my master cylinder still
wasn't putting any pressure. It didn't move the pistons at all nor build
resistance as I pumped the handle. After pricing rebuild kits, I decided to
just replace the master cylinder with this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271183214542

Once I had my old master cylinder off, I started checking it out and found
the rubber cover inside the reservoir that goes over the holes was torn.
Great! There is a clear problem, so replacing the master cylinder should be
my solution! Right? Riight? Wrong. :(

The new MC came with a little bag of parts - a piston, a spring, a circlip,
and a rubber boot. Similar to what you would see in a rebuild kit, but the
MC seemed to be already assembled. I don't have a pair of deep circlip
pliers to actually take the thing apart, but the boot, piston, circlip, and
spring are all clearly there. Not sure why they sent me extra parts... I
did notice there is no rubber cover inside the reservoir on this one, nor
are there grooves to hold one.

Anyway, I installed the new MC but no dice. I'm still not getting any
pressure at all. Brake fluid will squirt up when I pump the handle but it
doesn't seem to be putting any pressure through the brake lines.

What's my next step? Do I replace the brake lines? They seem to be in good
shape, no bulges, etc. Not sure what to do next.

Help me, Nighthawk Lovers Forum. You're my only hope. :)

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Removing and replacing the rear cowl (as well as removing the backrest).

Put it on the center stand to work on it. You can put a 4foot long 2x4 under
the rear wheel to help lift it up to get the shocks lined up when done. Easy

No need for any kind of spring compressor the rear shock units will only
expand to a certain length, and I'm pretty sure you can unhook one side at
a time to get the tail cowl off so no need to prop up the back end. As for
torque on bolts, my general rule is use locktite on things that need to
stay put, and keep torque values down since the plastic and aluminum parts
will strip just from looking at them too hard. Enjoy your new bike I had a
1992 NH750 for my first bike and they are a great all around package. The
only things I would suggest is upgrading the fork springs, stainless brake
line, jet kit, and better rear shocks. But I recommend those items on
pretty much any bike. If you want to jet it let me know and I'll dig up
what my final settings were.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Wrap Exhaust?

It will also trap moisture. If you ride in the rain. Or park it outside.
So, make sure you have a nice thick paint on your headers. Or it will rust

According to summit racing 50' of 2" wide will do a set of V* headers.
Yes it will reduce heat.
Once the wrap gets soaked with oil it will always smoke. I'd just fix the
leak.
That is up to the beholder.
Wet the wrap before installing, it helps to get it nice and tightly wound.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Solenoid

2015-08-15 Thread Greg

There is a letter B on one side and a W on the other. I figured the B meant
battery. Worth a try though. I'm just thinking there is another issue since the
old fuse melted. I still haven't been able to figure out what's wrong with my
headlight. Maybe a ground problem is causing this? I gotta look at the wiring
schematic.

Sometimes all you can do is reverse the polarity and reroute auxiliary
power through the secondary ODN conduits.

Those Chinese solenoids off eBay my be sold to fit your application. But
you have to check the wiring with a multimeter. The one I got for my Yamaha
was wired wrong internally so I had to move leads around in the wiring
harness plug.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Feeling like Hodor

2015-09-06 Thread Greg

No. I'm sorry but on the 91 and up 750s, the exhaust studs are used with nuts
to tighten the pipes to the heads. The heads are aluminum which strip easily. I
know I messed up a couple trying to use long bolts. Not sure about the 650s
though. If you use bolts, get the best kind you can get so it won't rust.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Feeling like Hodor

2015-09-07 Thread Greg

See if a shop can do it. I cut the bolt flush with a dreamed tool and had to
drill out the rest. Problem is that you can,t get the right angle, or get close
enough. Ultimately I took the engine out of the frame to work on it. Call a
couple of shops and see if they can do it.

I figured it'd be possible. I'm having a helluva time with this stud. There's
maybe 3/4 " of the stud protruding from the head. It's a fairly tight squeeze
to the stud. Maybe a 3/4" diameter circle around the area I have to work with.
Could probably drop the exhaust to get a tiny bit more room off to one side.

Anyone tried one of those extractors that bites into the remaining stud and you
use a ratchet to turn it out? Would I be be better off using the other type
where you drill into the screw? I got a co worker of mine with a torch we could
maybe weld a nut onto the stud or heat up the head and try it that way. Vice
grips just slip off. Could be my cheap O ones I guess. And suggestions?

The one autozone lends out is the middle one. I've read decent things about the
Titan (last, tapered one). The top one sketches me out a bit as the torque
point is off to the side.

As far as the torch goes it's propane in a blue bottle. I'll be running it.
Going to drop my exhaust and go for it tonight. Also, are we talking minutes
with the torch or seconds?

Two cylinders should be slightly more efficient than four, in terms of
thermodynamics.

Twins have a smaller surface area: volume ratio than fours of the same
displacement, which reduces the thermal losses of combustion.

They are also more likely to have larger valves, reducing pumping losses
during operation.

That's not the stator. The stator is part of the alternator system.

Sounds like your starter solenoid may be sticking. Does it keep doing it even
after you switch the key all the way off?

Also, does your starter switch rebound like it's supposed to? I've had my
physical switch get stuck before, had to clean it.

Sounds like your battery went bad. I think 16 volts is a bit too high for a
healthy battery. You should be able to get it tested in autozone or some other
place like that.

Hey, guys, my 93 NH750 with 20K miles has developed a cold start problem. I
have to continue to grind the starter extensively as it slowly comes to life,
putt-putting like an old outboard motor until it slowly catches, then finally
starts roaring. Full choke kills it. Instead I have to go half choke and ease
up to half throttle during the putt-putt until it's fully running. Hot starts
and road operation are normal. Anyone got an idea what's going on? I've been
adding Sea Foam to the gas and it seems a little better but nowhere near
enough. By the way, the problem is worse the longer the bike sits between
rides.

Thanks for any advice!

Yeah, just the chain side. Alignment is good. Chain tension too. Maybe a worn
cush drive?

What size rear tire it looks to me either too big and is rubbing the chain or
horribly misadjusted, maybe both. The tire is not chopped anywhere else correct?

I checked. No wobbling on a centerstand. It is all the way around. I just not

I have the BT 023 (I think) on my 750, which is wider, and there no rubbing
with anything. If you have a center stand, try checking if there is any
wobbling if the wheel, although I'll surprised if you don't notice it while
riding. Did this happen slowly over time, or from one day to the next? is the
wearing all the way along the circumference?

I once had a deep gouge all the way around my rear tire, I had to replace it
with only about 2,000 miles in it. I did remember hearing a strange rubbing
sound for about 15 second and the a clunk a day or so before I saw the damage
to the tire. My best guess is that something got stuck in my tire and fender
between the tire and frame and basically rubbed away the tire until it could
fit between the tire and fender and the flew off the bike. Looks like
something similar could have happened to your tire.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Listing to Port

2016-04-04 Thread Greg
Hey everyone. I've been putting this off but I gotta put it out there. My 91
750 has been listing to the port side. I know the tires wear more on that side
because of road crowning and such. I replaced the tires and now it's more
noticeable. I have checked the forks in the triple clamp and they're even. The
rear shocks are pretty new too. Anyone has this issue?n What am I missing? It's
just a little lean, but I can notice it and worry mostly about premature tire
wear.

I have tried a bunch of things. Yes I have shifted my weight to the side to see
the difference. I have had this bike for almost 10 years. Just very annoying to
not know what the cause is. I have also made sure the rear wheel adjusters are
even. I have grabbed both wheels to see if they are loose or wiggle. No
movement detected. They're solid. The bike has over 50.000 miles now. I changed
the front bearings a few months ago also.

Could be that the rear tire is not aligned properly. Just because the adjusters
show that they are even doesn't mean the tire is perfectly straight.
Here's what I do- I bought this from Cycle Gear
(http://www.motionpro.com/product/08-0048), then I removed the rod and glued on
a small bullet type laser pointer (keychain style). Clamp it on the rear
sprocket and read the light from the pointer on the chain at the front sprocket.
I thought my tire was aligned, but sure enough it wasn't. Once I used this
method, my bike straightened up and felt better.
All you do is adjust the wheel until the laser lines up at the sprocket in the
same position as where your alignment tool is.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Sidecar hack

2016-05-16 Thread Greg
I have seen a Nighthawk 250 with a sidecar. Talked to the nice lady riding it.
She was happy with it. I used to pull a trailer with my 91 750. The trailer
weighted 120 pounds bare. (harbor freight special) I added plywood with 2x4 s
to make a box. With all the stuff I've put in there, it could have been up to
200pounds of weight back there. I had to slip the clutch in 1st gear to get her
to move in traffic. Can do? Yes. Now I have switched to side boxes, a trunk box
and a sissy bar bag. At the local Webster bike flea market there used to be a
guy selling sidecars for older Jap bikes, but building your own is cool. With
that swingarm setup, would there be a lot of wobble going down the road?

I want one, can even shift it to 2wd so the sidecar wheel is also driving.
Sidecars have been put on lots of bikes even pedal bikes lol.

I think my frame gets the monster look because of the motorcycle swing arm, you
can also use a torsion trailer axle and wheel. It's only a 2 x 4 foot frame.

Shouldn't be, I'm going to mount the coil over just behind the axle to prevent
that. Also will tie on a VW steering damper to connect from forks to sidecar.

Motorcycle swing arms on sidecars has been used many of times. Down side is
changing a flat and availability of the tire, plus looks. Plus side is it was
laying around, it has brakes already and don't have to make a swing arm. I
have two books I purchased one is how to make everything the second is how to
setup and drive it. Plus have countless hours researching online and reading
threw posts, looking at pictures of hacks and tug setups.

Hi, Dan here. Nice to "meet" you all.

I am 44 and have always wanted to ride and am finally doing it! Took the MSF
course 3 weeks ago and just bought a 2008 Nighthawk 250 this week.

Yesterday evening was my first time riding outside of a parking lot. I had to
be careful on the dirt roads because, of course, it's pretty easy to skid out.
I did not want to go down on my first day! (Or ever.) That worked out. I had to
go slow and turn carefully.

I had to ride on a 45-50mph road for a half mile or so, and, I've gotta say, it
was scary. Very scary knowing that a twitch of an arm or a rock in the road
could put me on the pavement. I'm curious if this is normal for a beginner?
That 45-50mph road is the main one in town and I'll need to drive it to get
anywhere.

I'm looking for some reassurance! I'll get comfortable with this, right?

I'll be looking into how to change the oil next...

Dan

I just picked up this beautiful '83 Nighthawk! It does not run at the moment,
hopefully I can change that soon. The guy I bought it from says It ran last
summer but "he shorted the electrical system when he was trying to carve down
an aftermarket starter relay". The guy said he's replaced a bunch of wiring,
but hasn't quite got to the finish line.

Any tips on where I should start with this bike to get it running again? Should
I just replace the starter relay and go from there? I am very handy and plan
on doing all of the work myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It has 47,000 miles on it and I have no idea about how it was maintained.

I plan on replaced all of the spark plugs, flushing and replacing the engine
oil and rear finish oil and air filter. Anything else in regards to "MUST
REPLACE" that I should do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] No Rejetting required for Exhaust Baffle removal

2016-09-03 Thread Greg
I have a stage 2 jet kit along with a KN air filter. It all comes out of a Mac
4-1 exhaust. The Mac is a very cheap exhaust. It will rust after a couple of
years. The Vance n Hines is a better investment. The Macs have a removable
baffle which is held on by only one screw. It's a very primitive design. With
the baffle removed, the bike does sound good except when running on the highway
for a while. Then it's just annoying. With the baffle removed I do feel a power
increase in the bike. To me it's noticable. For track days, or other goofiness
I would recommend the baffle removal. But not for everyday use. Fuel economy
will also greatly suffer with that setup.

back with some careful maintenance and care? I have an 84 650 w/25K
miles with many new parts now which I love and seems to run great. I
have only had it since this spring. It needed a lot when I got it.
This other one just came up and the low mileage seemed like it might
be worth a shot. Thanks for your thoughts

Hey folks,

What is the difference between the CB 750 and CB 750 SC?? Specifically, is
there a difference between the shape of the seat?

I just bought a 2004 Nighthawk 250 and it ran great when I test rode
it. Got it home and rode it around for a day in the neighborhood and
shut it off using the kill switch.

Now I can't get the bike started. It cranks and cranks but does not
fire up. I've checked everything I know how: clutch is in, key is in,
kill switch is on run, gas switch is up, kickstand is up. I try in
neutral and in 1st with the clutch in. Nada. Just about got the
  battery run down.

I am stumped. It's a new bike to me and I haven't had one in over 30
years so I might be missing something obvious.

  Any ideas?

  Thanks.

  Will

If anyone can get hold of the February Issue of Motorcyclist, they
always do a Smart Money motorcycle purchase, they give a pretty detail
pros and cons of buying a 1991 - 2000 Nighthawk. I would have to
agree with pretty much everything in the article, both pros and cons.
The Pros far outweigh the Cons by a long shot.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Sprocket science?

2009-01-16 Thread Greg Holuban
Last week, while riding my '91 750 I noticed a thumping feel through my pegs,
like I had a giant bubble gum stuck on my rear wheel. But it wasn't keeping
pace with the wheel rotation. I checked the front sprocket (rear is new, chain
too) and it looked worn, so I ordered a new one. When I took the old one off, I
noticed that it was put on backwards. How? It reads OUTSIDE 15 on one side.
So, is it just a cheap "fix" to flip the sprocket, or a bad idea? There is just
a small difference on each side for thickness. The new sprocket can't be
flipped.

First off, did the replacement sprocket cure the problem ?
I'll reduce the rhetoric to a simple solution... replace both sprockets
and chain at the same time. NO short-cuts. Official Honda policy. All
components wear and should be replaced as a set. Failure to do so causes
drastic shortening of service life of all components. IE: a new rear sprocket
will wear quickly when used with a worn chain.

  2000 NH 750 with 17,000 miles: $2700. Purchased in May, 2008.
Standard options plus cruise control on the throttle grip, engine
guards. Needed a front tire (DOT date: 2795), fork seals, handlebar
bushings, new plugs, new battery. Never regretted the purchase -
extremely reliable, easy to control - bought it before I had taken the
safety course - had not ridden a bike since 1970. I ride it to work
(20 miles each way) every day weather permitting. My only negatives
are is the availability of after market options (luggage, lighting,
etc) and the single disk brake in front and drum brake in back. Wish
I could buy a European CB750 new - or Honda start selling it in the
  states again.

  Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Cost

OK, from what I've seen here, I'm the guy who probably paid more than
everybody else for their Nighthawk. But I'm completely okay with
  that...

To explain why you have to understand,... I wanted a Nighthawk for
about 5 years. While cost to me was important, within a certain
boundary it was not the limiting factor- finding just the bike that
met my requirements was. A newer model year, low mileage,
mechanically sound and cosmetically beautiful was what I was looking
for. Yes, I know what you're thinking, why didn't I just buy a new
bike? The problem is the Nighthawks are not manufactured anymore.
Even the 250's are gone now, and with my 6'2", 220lb frame the 250's
that were made after 2003 were just too small for me. That left me
with only one option- look for something used.

So I looked on and off for a few years but didn't find anything, until
I found my '03 750 on the Internet. I bought it from a Honda
dealership (which, right there, should tell you it ain't gonna' be a
steal), where somebody had just traded it in on a 4-wheeler. But the
bike was in just about show-room condition. Other than a small ding
in the exhaust where it had fallen over on the kick stand, it was
everything I wanted. The dealership had completely serviced the bike
and installed a new battery, but other than that it was stock. I paid
just under $4K for it, and it had 3200 miles.

So, after taking so long to find exactly what I wanted, I wasn't going
to let a few hundred dollars (the difference between what I paid and
what probably would have been a better deal) get between me and that
bike. I bought it on the spot- and would do it again if I had to re-
do the experience. I just love that Nighthawk. I never winterized
it, as I've found that anything above 40-degrees is a opportunity for
at least a short ride. And here in Maryland, we get a fair number of
40+ degree days even in the middle of winter (my wife has learned it's
now very easy to get me to go to the grocery store on the weekends-
but only as long as whatever we need will fit on a Hondaline luggage
  rack ;-)).

Here's a pciture, if you want to see it. It's really not all that
  special,... except to me:

Go to a bike flea market and get the parts cheaper. Just need mirrors and a
handlebar. You can live with the dented tank for a while. Keep riding.

Not ever happen again? I dumped my 160 twice, but that was long ago.
Haven't gone down with the 250, but did touch the rear bumper of a car that ran
a stop sign on a cross street a few years back. She stopped, got out just to
look at her car, and said to me, "I hope you didn't damage my car. "
I lost it. I generally don't use such language, but I was furious when I
blurted out "B---h, you had a stop sign!!!" She said no I did not. I asked
what, are you blind??? Do you know what that octagonal sign is right there?? as
I pointed to it across the street from where she parked...
I thought for sure I was going down, but between the downshifting to use the
engine to brake and clamping down hard on the front brake and moving toward the
middle of the road (couldn't go around - oncoming traffic, and around a curve
and at night), I managed to just rub the rear bumper and was surprised when it
didn't just grab the tire and put me down.
She knew I was furious and got back in her SUV and called someone on her
cellphone - probably the cops - and I was not interested in waiting around a
half hour and then taking another half hour filling out forms and being late
for work because of this prissy skirt who thought she was "all that... "
I took her license, make, and color of her SUV, and a description of her on
my notepad, and left. There wasn't even black from the bike's tire on her
bumper. I shined my light all over it to find out.
That experience was a rush, man.

2009-03-27 Thread Greg Holuban
Well in Florida there are two every month in different areas. It's mostly
Harley stuff, but every time I see something new. They have windshields,
saddlebags, exhaust, grips, clothes, jewelry, tires, rims, engine parts,
trannies and odds and ends. It takes about an hour to walk it.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: looking for 1984 700s Nose Cone fairing

It increases wind downforce for high speed stability. And gets more air to the
engine. Does it really work? I don't know.

I would assume it increases downforce while redirecting air to the engine. If
you look at the pic on the jc whitney site it's got quite a groove going down
the middle.

hard to find. Do a "used motorcycle parts" search and try your luck.
