Re: Karsh portraits
Hi; Met his brother in Ottawa when I was working there about three years ago. Again a very kind and gracious gentleman. And talented as well. He autographed a couple of his books for me. It was one of the highlights of the eight months I spent there. Lasse Karlsson wrote: Happened to find a free 190 page book of Karsh photography. ("Karsh" by University of Toronto Press 1983.) I'll see if I can make use of some of his lighting techniques for some b&w portraits. There is a number of very good non-portrait shots as well. Among others there is a photograph of a farmer in Regina, Canada, Must be close to you then, William (Robb), in case you're reading. Anyone who cares much for Karsh' shooting nowadays? Or, even worse for those of us who already have the *ist-D, we might have to wait months to get the 16-45 lens while all available ones go into "kit" sales. Re: AF-280T vs. AF-500FTZ
Yeah, there seems to be this mistaken belief that the AF500FTZ is the most powerful Pentax flash, but the GN is based on the flash zoomed out to cover an 85mm lens. At 24mm it has a GN of 30, at 85mm the GN is 50. The AF400T has a GN of 40 at 28mm. I believe that it is the Pentax flash with the most output. -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, January 31, 2004, 5:31:51 PM, you wrote: GL> How does the AF-500FTZ's power compare to the AF-280T? Re: OT: Metric Conversion was: This is cold.
Hi, Keith, Funny thing, you mention metric and imperial measurement. Here in The Great White North (Canada), we were imperial until late 60's or early 70's, when by government fiat we one day became a metric nation. I was around 12 or 13, and by then, imperial was ingrained in my psyche. I've still never fully made the conversion. I think that I've done it most successfully in temperature. I'll usually think celsius first, but fahrenheit is still easy for me to relate to. Distance, weight, volume: I still think imperial first. With things like miles/kilometres, I don't have to "convert" in my head, I can do both. But, centimetres to inches I still have to think "let's see, that's 2.5 cm per inch...". I still think inches, feet and miles, pounds and ounces. Volume is a different story. Milk comes in litres, so does gas. Soft drinks come in millilitres. Wine comes in 750 ml or 1 litre bottles. Liquor still comes in 26 or 40 ouncers (despite the fact that they're labelled in ml). And, most important, beer still comes in pints or quarts, no matter what the label says! cheers, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. AF-280T vs. AF-500FTZ
How does the AF-500FTZ's power compare to the AF-280T? I had thought that the AF-500FTZ was much more powerful since it has a guide number of 164'/50m compared to 91'/27.4m for the AF-280T. But I see on B&H's web site that the AF-500FTZ's 164'/50m guide number applies to its 85mm telephoto coverage, while at 50mm coverage its guide number is 138'/42m. Since the AF-280T is not a zoom and has a fixed angle of coverage of 28mm, I would guess its guide number of 91'/27.4m applies to 28mm, even though wide angle and telephoto adapters are available separately for it. Correct? Any idea what the AF-500FTZ's guide number is at 28mm? I usually use a Stofen filter on my AF-280T, and I'm not really interested in how powerful the AF-500FTZ is at 85mm coverage. Instead, I'm interested in how much more total light it would put into the Stofen than the AF-280T does -- I'd like to be able to bounce more often and use smaller aperatures. Thanks, Greg

Re: New memeber to the list
Welcome (as from Romanian to Romanian). Guess what camera I have... :) Pentax is, imo, a good choice in Romania. You have to try very hard to find a Nikon camera (and even then, it'll be something like F65), or Canon lenses (I only saw Canon kits) - I'm talking about new items; unfortunately, Pentax sh lenses&cameras are much harder to find. And don't be sad if you look at similar cameras from others manufacturers which looks better featured. Just try them for 5 min - you'll never want to touch those plastic toys again! Hmmm... should I recommend you a battery grip? I think the camera feels better with it, except when you use a tripod :( Another reason: I guess you've purchased the camera from Focus94 (as you also have a Nova bag and a Rodenstock filter). Imo, they are nice people, and the Pentax certified service is another plus. Boris already answered your questions. Try experimenting with a (not so powerful) light source in the middle of the frame. Btw: as you suspected, when you depress the shutter release halfway, the camera will always use matrix(or centerweight for old lenses) metering, regardless of the PF-5. Spot metering is available only via the AE-L button (with PF5 to Sp). I keep the camera with the lens mounted, I don't want to stress the lens mount (it's already have a slight mark from mounting/unmounting the lens. I don't dare to think what the lens mount would look if it was made from plastic!) I guess for long term storage, you'll want to throw some silicagel in the box/bag, or keep it on a dry, ventilated place. RE: New memeber to the list
Hi, Boros, Well, looks like your questions have already been answered, but I don't know anything about that particular model anyway, so I couldn't really have helped. I just wanted to welcome you to the list. You'll find everyone's really patient with "newby" questions, so don't be shy to ask anything. You'll also learn a lot about general photography here (and a lot of off-topic stuff as well! ). There are many excellent photographers here who can teach anyone a lot. I hope you stick around, and I hope you enjoy yourself. Isn't there at least one other Romanian on the list? Where are you, speak up! cheers and welcome, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true." -J. Robert Oppenheimer From: "Boros Attila" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "PDML" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: New memeber to the list Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 10:13:27 +0200 Hello, I think first of all I should write some words about myself... I'm a 27 year old man from Romania, and I work as a programmer in a telecommunications company. I like music, chess, and of course photograpy :) After being a point&shooter for about a year, I have started to take some photographs which I actually like very much, but it happened more often than I found myself constrained by the capabilities of my P&S (an Exakta Zoom 90 AF). So I have decided to buy my first SLR. After a short search on the net the choices seemed to be clear: I should buy a Nikon or Canon. Then I have examined thoroughly the features and the prices of the respective cameras, and I accidentally found a Pentax MZ-6. I was amazed. (Still I am:) ) So I have just purchased my first SLR system: a kit formed by a Pentax MZ-6 camera with Pentax FA 28-90mm f3.5-5.6 lens, batteries and Cokin filter holder; Velbon CX-300 tripod, Lowepro Nova 1 camera bag, Rodenstock Skylight(1A) filter. I am still learning how to operate my camera, and I have found a quite interesting post on the net about the MZ-6: "The AE-L button on the back, right hand side of the camera (where your thumb falls naturally) is used to either spot meter or lock the exposure value (using evaluative metering). So what if you want to have spotmetering available at all times and still be able to lock exposure? Use PF-5 set to #1 will turn the AE-L button into the spotmeter lock and set PF-6 to #2 which will lock the exposure value when focus is confirmed." Is this correct? So with these settings I focus on a certain point, depress the shutter release halfway and I just locked the exposure (I assume this will be matrix metered). I recompose the picture, focus again, depress the shutter release halfway (for the second time)... and now what? The locked exposure remains or it will be erased? (According to the manual, PF-6 set to 2 means "AE lock is used when a subject is focused with shutter release button is depressed halfway down". I'm a little bit confused here. And if the exposure locks, for how much time is locked, and how can I erase it if I change my mind? Some newbie questions: Can I unmount the lens from the camera while it is loaded with film without accidentally exposing the film? Should I store my camera with the lens mounted, or it's better to take it off? Can I keep it all the time in the camera bag? Thanks in advance, Attila _ Tired of spam? Re: Karsh portraits
I love the guy's work. Our CBC television network did a one hour bio of him a year or two ago, and two things hit me: First, he seemed to be a genuinely nice man. There was some footage of the man in his studio, and his calm, relaxed manner with his subjects was amazing. All of his subjects that they interviewed made mention of that; how good he made them feel, how he would carry on a conversation with them about their life, their work, whatever, all the while going about his business. It almost made them forget they were in a brighly lit studio with a big honking wooden camera stuck in there! The other thing, is that anyone could walk into his Ottawa studio for a portait, and that his prices were competetive with other photography studios in town. God, had I known that, I'd have made the pilgimage to Ottawa (only about 6 hours drive from here) to be immortalized by the man. I simply assumed that since he'd photographed the rich, famous and powerful world-wide, that his portraits would cost an arm and a leg. I was wrong. cheers, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true." -J. Hey I just wanted to tell everyone how great I think all the pictures are this month. :o) Seems everyone is kinda putting out their comments, figured I would try also. " Red and green vegetation " by Thrainn Vigfusson, I really love the contrast of colors in this picture. " Hot Water " by Cotty, This is SO cool! Did you ever see the documentary at the end of Disney's Bambi movie? They took a bunch of pictures of milk dropping so that they could draw it acurately. Too bad you weren't on their team! " Bell Flower " by Robert Herz, This is just really beautiful to me - especially all the really tiny drops of water on the edges of the petals. " Fountain in the Luxumbourg Gardens, Paris " by Ann Sanfedele, I like this one because it is really dramatic. " Fountain " by Bruce Dayton, So bright and pretty! All these pictures are so well done to me. Sorry if I didn't complement yours specifically, but I really think they are all great. :o) Rebekah

The D70 is a true competitor to the *istD, unlike the Digital Rebel which smells of toy but is not totally without merit. I'm tempted by D70's 1/8000 shutter and 1/500 flash sync (the sensor acts as second curtain to give the fast sync) and RGB metering, in a nicely featured body very like the D100 and *istD. I'd say there's tough times ahead for any Pentax DSLR still sitting in the old D100 price range, or anywhere much above a thousand bucks street price. I think Pentax missed a beat by not installing an AF system the equal of the Nikon F5 in the *istD, which would have given it value heads above any price-point competition. -- John Mustarde www.photolin.com

This was my mode of transportation when I visited Lasse this last October. Many different bars, restaurants, cafeteria, casinos, duty free shopping. Play areas where you can park the kids. Quite an operation. I was amazed at the low cost of the ticket until I realized that transportation of passengers from Point A to Point B was only incidental. It actually could be a good set-up for a floating studio... I am not that desperate.. :) Maybe not, but the others on board certainly are :-D For our foreign readers, we're talking about two competing ferry lines, both using 200 meter cruise ships. Re: Pentax *istD NEWS FLASH!!!!
Cotty noted: " Interesting but this does not preclude a Baby D." or a "papa D" for that matter... I was actually thinking this myself - they could still be planning to release something low end, AND high end with the *istD smack in the middle, although, the price drop has me wondering about the low end option to some degree... I mean, maybe they intend to release something higher eg 8MP, and the new price will automatically drop the *istD down to the "baby D" level? I was already considering to myself that he has worded it so as to seem more beneficial for me to purchase the *istD now, rather than wait, which in turn makes me think that they are really trying hard to clear out the stock to make way for something new, and probably bigger and better... The idea of them releasing a second "edition" with the firmware upgrade doesn't gel with me - it is just too easy to download it and install it yourself, I just don't see how they could charge extra for a body containing information that is readily available for free and is most easy to install... As for Mike's "bubble bursting" comments - no bubbles to be burst here Mike! I am not so naive as to believe everything that they offer me, and can also, as I mentioned recognise that he was very "cryptic" in his tone - I was more excited just to be able to offer the list an "exclusive" that I could barely believe I would be privy too! tan. > >"Dear Ms Mayer, > > > >Thank you very much for your interest in the *ist D. > > > >There will be no *ist D replacement announced at PMA. > > Interesting but this does not preclude a Baby D. > > I think we might just see an announcement of some kind > > > Cheers, > Cotty > > > ___/\__ > || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche > ||=| www.macads.co.uk/snaps > _ > Free UK Mac Ads www.macads.co.uk >
Re: Humble review of "Wet" PUG
Thanks a lot for the comment, Boris! I think the black lines in the rightmost drop are caused by wilted rowan leaves on the stone, but it would be much more fun if you are right...:-) I see your point about the topmost highlight. I left it in because I thought that cropping it all out would make the shot too tight. Also, I think it's pretty much in the right place, composition considered. Maybe it's possible to clone it off in Photoshop. When I framed this shot, the topmost spore capsule had a nice big droplet as well. There was also a big chunk of wilted debris right behind it, which I decided to remove. Unfortunately, the droplet went with it. I considered waiting until the moss had gathered enough spray from the waterfall to build another droplet, but I realised that the camera would gather moisture at the same rate, so I didn't take the risk. That thing about drop building sequence didn't strike me at all! Very interesting. :-) Thanks again, Boris, I really appreciate your thoughts. Best, Jostein > " Moss " by Jostein Oksne - very wet image. Jostein - could it be > that the rightmost drop actually reflects the tripod? Or is there a > group that wants to join Sweden as well? There are a few, maybe 2-3%. However, this also reflects the present day political situation. Finland wouldn't willingly let Aland go independent. But if a majority of Alanders demands independence, Finland will have to yield. If Aland wanted to join Sweden it's more complicated. Sweden wouldn't like to face the political difficulties of having to deal with Finland over such a controversial issue. This means that she (Sweden) would express some sort of reluctancy at the very thought of the idea. This would probably be sufficient for Aland not even wanting to involve Sweden directly in the first place. However, Sweden is an "interested party" to the League of Nation decision on the status of Aland, and as such she cannot completely turn away, should the Alanders turn to Sweden with reference to the 1921 agreement on the sovereignty over Aland. Personally - and as far as I know I am the only one expressing thoughts along this line - I am in favor of some sort of innovative co-existence between an independent Aland and Sweden. However, any such ideas are extremely hypothetical, as they could only materialize after an Aland independence. This, in turn, may be so far ahead in the future, that I cannot even for sure count on being around to see it, even if I hope so. > A former co-worker of mine, who's Swedish but has family in mainland > Finland, got very upset once when I hinted that the Åland inhabitants > may feel closer to Sweden than to Finland -- basically I said the > same as I did in my previous post here, plus the fact that you can > watch Swedish tv and stuff. I assume you mean you were using TTL here which gave you at least one stop underexposure? I have found at ISO 200 thesame thing using the external flash at TTL. In auto, so using the sensor of the flash, it works very good, also the ISO value, focal length and aperture are transmitted to the flash. > I use manual metering with my own meter and and find they are always a > least one stop under exposed. From what I heard is that the TTL only works correct at ISO 400, below that you get under exposure, and above ISO 400 you get over exposure. I hope for a firmware update. Did you found any relation in the flash TTL behaviour in regards to the sensitivity setting? -- Frits Wüthrich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Re: Underexposed *istD w/ AF360FGZ (Was:D - Not Pentax but an interesting . . .)
Hello Kevin, That sounds a bit odd. Since the camera is not involved at all in the exposure setting (I assume). When I use studio flash (Alien Bees) and meter with my Gossen Luna Pro Digital F, the exposures are just about right. I would think that perhaps your meter is calibrated just a bit off. At least, if you set the *istD on full manual exposure and then metered the scene and set the camera, the exposure value should be about right. I would expect the same behavior if you set manually for an outdoor shot with no flash and with a separate meter. If you had a film camera that you manually set based on some external meter reading and the exposure was off, you would first suspect the meter accuracy. Second, perhaps the shutter speeds of the camera and third, the lens aperture closing in time. Seems to me that your problem is totally unrelated to TTL flash metering on the body. Care to enlighten us a bit on the details of what you are doing? Are you using studio strobes that use your TTL ciruitry in the camera? -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, January 31, 2004, 2:14:02 PM, you wrote: KW> This one time, at band camp, Frits Wüthrich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> Try shooting at ISO 400 when using a flash. Re: Pentax *istD price has been reduced by 300usd
I think not. I doubt that anyone could get away with a firmware upgrade you can do in your home and change your model designation charging a higher price. Unless your name is Microsoft that is, and even then you can't fool everyone. At 12:59 PM 1/31/04, you wrote: Actually, it probably only means they are clearing out the models without the firmware factory installed upgrade. Interesting OT: Aland and Finland (wasRe: * ist DigitalQuestion)
From: "Raimo Korhonen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Actually it was given to Finland by the League of Nations. That is correct. This was in June 1921, after Finland, having put the Aland Islands under military occupation, had declared that she wouldn't comply with any decision by the League of Nations, other than one which forced Aland and the Alanders under Finnish sovereignty, and that Finland, if she wouldn't have her way, would rather go to war to get it. (You could even say that it was England who by her influential position in the League of Nations gave Aland to Finland. If the wish of the Aland people would materialize - what possible consequences would such a precedent carry with regards to the British Empire, and not only to the Irish question.) > There was no referendum but prominent Alanders were of the opinion that Aland should > be given to Sweden and of course Sweden had nothing against it. It's true that there was no formal referendum, as we know it today. The reason for this was that Finland, subjecting Aland political leaders and spokesmen to political harrassments and illegal imprisonment, wouldn't allow the Alanders to conduct one, under threat of imprisoning those who asked for an internationally supervised referendum. However, the Alanders did cast votes. In June of 1919 96% of those casting their vote, by signing their names to a petition, voted for Aland to return to it's motherland Sweden. Present day Finnish history legend on the Aaland Island Question bears similarities to the Soviet-Russian history legend regarding those states which were forced under Soviet rule. The Soviet history writing basically said that only "fascist" elements opposed the free will of the people of those countries to join the Soviet Union. In Finland they say that only "some prominent Alanders" didn't want Aland to become Finnish, when in fact 96% voted for Sweden and against Finland. "Anything but Finland" declared the Alanders before the League of Nation. Even independence, although they knew it meant the greatest economic difficulties. >Now it is a demilitarised area with quite extensive autonomy. > Last time there was a poll about the matter the majority preferred to stay with > Finland - no doubt because it is financially beneficial. Looks like my work is cut out for me now.lol I think your right that 'candid' is probably the way to go with here. She is just starting the 'drunken sailor' walking now,so i hope shes a bit better in March.:-) I was in their home Friday and did a quick look at available light spots inside the house. Some possibilites but not what i was hoping for. It looks a lot better than it is when looking out to in. My best bet is near tha ponds, nicer back grounds. I will have to really on Mom and some of the students for this shoot. The reason i did mostly candids at the horse shows is she is facinated by my long hair and beard(at least this is what we think)She can be howling with laughter playing with the young riders and when i try to get her attention its stop, look and stare.:-) However she does not mind the camera, attention or is a fussy baby at all.She is very much used to a lot of people around as there are tons of 'barn moms' at the show to keep her happy and occupied. I keep forgetting i can use 220 film with the 6x7.Only 120 with the Y-M, information to which brain has yet to disgard. I suppose the time will be better worked out closer to shoot time as her daily schedule may change by then(never thought of that,Jr is almost 21 so those days are long gone) As for flash i rarely use it,will bring one,but hope to not have to resort to it. Once again thanks for the tips folks and the samples Tanya I'll post any good ones. Dave > > Ok, Dave, well, I have some advice more on a practical level rather than a > purely photographic one. Re: D: 2.2GB MICRODRIVE HITACHI IBM MAGICSTOR
Hello Tanya, I've already done some research on this particular one. Seems that the early models had lots of problems and the current one, 1022C, is not that compatible with everything. They do have a specific list of compatible cameras and *istD is listed there. I have heard reports from some that even their supposedly compatible camera ended up not working with it. Among issues are high battery usage and heat. I have not found anyone so far who has tried/used it in an *istD. I finally decided that I couldn't afford the risk assocatied with something that has that bad of a reputation. Go on www.dpreview.com and check the forums under storage and media and search for magicstor. You will get an eye opener. Also www.photo.net has a bunch of negative comments. Pretty much the price tells you something. It is almost half the price of a Hitachi/IBM microdrive. When there is a significant price difference it is usually because of a significant difference in the products. In this case it seems to be quality/reliability. Raimo Korhonen: The idea of an independent state with a population of a major village - 25000 - is, well ... interesting. There are actually four countries in the world with less than 25,000 people: Vatican/The Holy See 1,000 Nauru 8,100 Tuvalu 8,200 San Marino 23,000 These two come close, too: Liechtenstein 29,000 Monaco 30,000 You could argue if all of them count, though. Still keeping under the 100,000 mark there is seven more, all of them islands except for Andorra (59,000). anders - http://anders.hultman.nu/

Thanks. I noticed that in my experiments last night. I had a shoot today for which I had intended to use film since I'm a newbie on the digital. But it was working so well last night I decided to use it. I filled a gig and a half of flash cards and am downloading the shots now. The couple I've looked at are nice. Pentax *istD NEWS FLASH!!!!
OMG HOT NEWS! I can't BELIEVE that I am the one to "reveal" this!! Little 'ole me in my sleepy 'ole one horse town! lol... I just got an email from CR Kennedy - they are the equivalent of Pentax USA in Australia. It is a little cryptic, but check out the second sentence!! I have included my original email to them, so that you can see what I was asking of them too... I am totally amazed by this, that they were so candid to tell me this information! - do you all think I should really take their word for it or are they just "blowing wind up my you know what"? The third line makes me think not, and that they are completely genuine in their response... "Dear Ms Mayer, Thank you very much for your interest in the *ist D. There will be no *ist D replacement announced at PMA. The investment necessary for the production of a Digital SLR is so huge that the model life must be long. We do not offer consumer rebates in Australia , as our prices already reflect the current factory price reduction. We will be delighted to quote you directly on your *ist D requirements. I was just wondering if you might be able to shed some light on how this might effect prices in Australia? http://www.pentaxusa.com/news/news_display.cfm?pressid=174 Also, will we here in Australia, have access to the us$200 cash back for purchase with the 16-45mm lens? I am looking to purchase this also! Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I am wanting to buy a at least one of these bodies for my kit (*had to make it sound worth their while to respond to me! lol*). I am wondering if this announcement could be preceding an announcement of a newer DSLR though, and think maybe I should hold off to see what is just around the corner. Or maybe released at PMA? Many thanks, Tanya." I know I was a bit cheeky in asking these things, but hey, they could only say "no comment" or leak some very cool info, so I thought "what the heck?" So, I am going to ring them on Monday morning and ask them just what their "current prices that are reflecting the current factory price reduction" are. I still think I will save myself a few hundred bucks by purchasing from the likes of B and H, particularly with the DA 16-45mm lens, but the Australian warranty would definitely be a bonus ALTHOUGH, on second thought, lol, I have just found THIS on their website on the FAQ's page... "Q. I bought my camera outside Australia and repair is needed within 12 months of purchase. A. You must provide a properly completed International Warranty Certificate and purchase receipt, which can only be provided by the retailer or distributor in the country of purchase. C.R Kennedy & Company cannot provide free service without sighting these documents. " I am assuming that purchasing from someone reputable like B and H or Adorama, I would automatically qualify for an "International Warranty Certificate" - can anyone clarify this? Ok, so I am going back to hide in my little hole now and watch as you all start taking bets over this "new" information! And, I am even more floored by the fact that I received this email at 7.10am on a Sunday morning!! It is genuine though, comes from the correct ISP and all names and contact details are totally correct, so I think that Pentax Australia may have one very motivated sales person! Either that, or they've been swamped with queries since the Pentax USA announcement... OR he just needs to get a life! lol, either way, I don't mind, what a great way to start a Sunday morning... tan.

Cotty said: "What a fabulous gallery. All are of a very high standard. The ones that jump out and slap me in the face are: Wet n Wild, FairyGirl." Thanks Cotty! "Red Leaves, Dag Thrane" Me too, I LOVE this shot - highly saturated but still with great detail, just gorgeous! Love the composition with just one curled edge adding that small touch of green to the image for some great contrast. "A Watery Post, Ken Waller" Same again, Cotty. I love this shot too Ken. It is beautifully sharp, and almost appears symmetrical in nature. This is the type of shot that I probably would never have thought to do myself... " Fountain, Bruce Dayton" A beautiful example of night photography, with a twist due to the movement of the fountain in the foreground. "In The Rain, Gianfranco" Hands down, my absolute favourite...! I also liked (in no particular order): " Vasa, by Joseph Tainter" Really great shot Joseph! One suggestion though - the blue "column" in the middle (a reflection of sorts?), I find slightly distracting - I would probably PS it out if it were me... Other than that, a lrvly shot with a very interesting perspective... " Hot Water, by Cotty" Another interesting shot with an interesting perspective. Good to see that you have a clean stove (cooker) - my hotplates never look like that! lol. " Wet Bee, by Mark Cassino" Goes without saying really, this is a very impressive shot! I want to make special mention of "Two Rivers", by Erin Dayton. Thankyou so much for submitting a shot of your fantastic "discovery". I too would have been very excited to find this out! It is lovely to see some young people submitting to the PUG (and especially GIRLS! lol). Just one thing Bruce, maybe you could give Erin a lesson or two about horizons? *grins*. Thankyou again Erin, I hope that my little boy enjoys photography as much as you do! I will make some more comments later, but I've had a rough night and I'm going to go back to bed for a bit! tan. " Fun at the Fountain, by Jerome Reyes" So very cute! Shots that *I'd* wish I had taken: "Everyday Miracle, Simon King" Simply STUNNING Simon. A moment that just cannot be repeated and you have captured it perfectly. Look at the expression on his little face! The light's really add atmosphere! I would post some similar shots of my daughter being born, but lets just say, well, I didn't have a ceasar and they may not be everyone's cup of tea! They are in black and white too though, and the medical lighting offered a similar "atmosphere" to them as yours. I just LOVE this shot Simon, and I would have been so proud to be the photographer of it (as well as the nervous daddy!!). Thank you for sharing such a precious moment with us... "Stone Town, Zanzibar, 1998, Bob Walkden" Again, I am in agreement with Cotty here - this is a beautiful shot. Feels classic in its nature, and although sunset silhouettes are quite commonly shot, this one is indeed special. There is such grace in the diver and the clouds were perfectly placed to give off just the right amount of colour and light from the sunset. Going to be a little cheeky now, and note though, that the horizon is SLIGHTLY off - possibly by 1degree? Sorry, don't mean to criticise, it is just something that I always tend to notice... " Moss, by Jostein Øksne" - lovely and most interesting shot!

MZ - 6 Question - New memeber to the list
Boros Attila wrote: Hello, I think first of all I should write some words about myself... Thanks in advance, Attila

Lasse Karlsson: Generally I'd say that if the alanders were certain that it was economically safe, I think a majority would opt for independence. As it stands there is about 10-20% support for independence now. This number will rise till the next elections in four years. And the rest wants to stay with Finland I suppose? Or is there a group that wants to join Sweden as well? A former co-worker of mine, who's Swedish but has family in mainland Finland, got very upset once when I hinted that the Åland inhabitants may feel closer to Sweden than to Finland -- basically I said the same as I did in my previous post here, plus the fact that you can watch Swedish tv and stuff. anders - http://anders.hultman.nu/

I am not that desperate.. :) Maybe not, but the others on board certainly are :-D For our foreign readers, we're talking about two competing ferry lines, both using 200 meter cruise ships. The ferrys are the main way to ship people and cargo between Sweden and Finland, but the bulk of the passengers use the ships only as moving night clubs, and the ferry lines get half their revenue from alcohol sales. anders - http://anders.hultman.nu/
Re: OT: Computer Peripherals question, no Macintosh content either
my WinXP machine returns from suspend in about the same amount of time. the only annoying thing about the machine that i use often enough to care is that my Firewire connection is only 4 pins and any Firewire hard drives i attach need an external power supply. i use an external 2.5" Firewire drive for my image backups for the machine. self-powered Firewire (6-pins) would have been what i would have prefered. only one cable then. i have to use a second cable to connect from my USB port to the power connector on the drive. i have since bought a USB 2.0 external 2.5" hard drive and that uses only one cable, but it's job is to move files around between computers and act as temporary storage. Re: Underexposed *istD w/ AF360FGZ (Was:D - Not Pentax but an interesting . . .)
Tom will be able to give the best report, but from my memory and others I have heard, ANY digital camera doesn't seem to be as consistent with TTL flash as the film bodies. Some of it could be latitude of the film, and some of it could be that the cameras purposely underexpose rather than blow out highlights. On negatives, this is not an issue, but with digital, once the highlights are gone, no amount of PS will bring them back. Tanya, you have shown, for those who didn't already know, that you can bring out an amazing amount of detail in an underexposed image, so it is not quite as bad as it seems. I have been shooting with an AF360FGZ for mostly daylight fill and an AF400T with Lumiquest softbox for my normal flash work. For daylight flash fill, I notice no problems with the AF360FGZ. When used as the main light source, it seems to err on the side of safety so most images need a bit of tweaking in PS, but never any lost highlights. The AF400T for the most part works reasonably well. If anything it seems to be a bit strong at times. I did have a few shots, that I just couldn't bring down the highlights enough. FWIW, I have heard similar stories from Nikon and Canon DSLR owners. -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, January 31, 2004, 7:20:03 AM, you wrote: WR> - Original Message - WR> From: "Kevin Thornsberry" WR> Subject: Underexposed *istD w/ AF360FGZ (Was:D - Not Pentax but an WR> interesting . . .) >> How many people are experiencing this problem and what are you doing about WR> it? >> I've tried some to use camera exposure compensations between +0.5EV and WR> 1.5EV >> depending on the situation with mixed success. Re: Pentax *istD price has been reduced by 300usd
Actually, it probably only means they are clearing out the models without the firmware factory installed upgrade. Wonder if the one with the upgrade is going to be called an *istDn (doesn't that make for unreadable alphabet soup)? The other price drops? Well, it is a very competitive market. -- Joseph Tainter wrote: Is this good news -- i.e., that the *ist D has sold well and Pentax is clearing out inventory to make way for a new, higher-spec model? Scanning is a pain in the butt, but I've decided to pass on the *istD. I will wait for 2 or 3 generations. By then they'll have a terrific camera that will be more affordable. Ideally I would like to wait for a full-frame sensor because I like to shoot a lot of wide angle. In the meantime, I've gotten a Canon Powershot. It has enough advanced features to keep me happy until a DSLR comes out that has the right combination of price and features.

Re: Quandry!
Welcome back, Shaun. I have an *ist D and am also keeping all my film gear and my Nikon LS 2000 scanner. Film cameras will be used for extended travel, and for when I need slides. Other then that, I particularly love two things about the *ist D: 1. At ISO 200, blue New Mexico skies are rendered with no discernable noise/grain. I've never seen that on even the finest-grained film. 2. The immediacy and flexibility are wonderful. If I want to shoot something on the spur of the moment, there is no more worrying about: Do I have the right film on hand or in the camera? Or is the film in the refrigerator or freezer? Am I in the middle of a roll of the wrong film? I can take a few shots and not have to wait for processing. The cf card goes directly to the computer, and I can have a print in minutes. The new DA 16-45 f4 looks like it will be a fine lens, and goes a long way to reducing the problem of getting wide angle shots. Other WA lenses look likely to appear. Get an *ist D but keep your film gear as well. Joe

Re: Pentax lowers *ist D price
I don't own a *ist-D but I have been able to play with one in a local camera store. (Yes for those of you in Connecticut, there is a store that stocks Pentax and yes the do have an *ist-D, two actually, in stock). I tried out my 28-70 on it and it seemed like a very nice range, if you're not looking for wide angle that is. The lens becomes the equivalent of 42-105 on a 35mm which is not two far from 35-105 of which Pentax has produced two an F and an A version. At 12:00 PM 1/31/04, you wrote: I do not know is Pentax will have something new in DSLR stable, at this point I'll be happy to see Pentax prosumer digicam like Panasonic FZ10 or Coolpix 5700. I also realize that I will have to invest in new zoom lenses if I choose to get *istD or its successor. My lone Pentax zoom is 28-70 f/4, while it goes great with my ZX-5N, I do not believe that it will be a great companion to a DSLR. So I am looking at a pretty sizeable initial investment and I don't want to part with my superb Pentax primes to ease the cost of transition from film to digital. I am sorely tempted by FZ10 with its Leica glass and IS system. What bugs me is the dreaded purple fringing and inability to use filters. Difficult choice indeed, so much great photo gear, so little time and money.
