I own both 645 and 6x7-MLU.

645 is used more than 5 years, i love that camera. It handles well,
viewfinder is amazing, and it allows you to use it all-manual, or give
to friends and set to programm mode, if you need to.
Negs are not that big, but you will get that MF DOF, crisp details and
smooth film look, that you will never get from digital.

6x7 is different, you have to learn how to properly load film.
everything is manual. and you need another camera as meter, or use
external light meter. you get even more shallow DOF, bigger negs, but
loose that ease of use that 645 has.

Last summer i decided to shoot more 6x7 film, still i need to scan and
process lot of film (ilford delta 400, fuji neopan 400 and adox 25, etc)

I would suggest an alternative though. I have handled a few of the 6x7

That's overpriced. You can find a camera alone on ebay for less than $300. I 
sold mine to Dario for $200 after my first buyer disappeared. The lens sells 
for around $150.

Good camera, but not at that price. Unless it's a 67II. If it's actually a 6x7, 
it's at least 25 years old. If it's a 67, it's at least 15 years old. The most 
recent model is the 67II.

I like this better.  The Everything looks more privative and bleaker,
so the oasis sign becomes more of a focus.  Especially since it
appears to lead to a dark tunnel.

Newsagent in the country and possibly into Myer and Target department 
stores

too.

If you really want a 6x7, you can be sure that Bill's camera is in excellent 
condition and fairly priced.

Remember though, that to take advantage of those big negs, you will need either 
a darkroom or a relatively high end scanner, like the Nikon medium format film 
scanner. You can get decent scans on a good flatbed, but your results will be 
about as good as what you'd get from an *istD or other relatively low 
resolution digital camera. Been there, done that. Fun, but not very productive.

I keep thinking i'll sell my 6x7 but just cannot bring my self to do it.
We have a lot of snow now, and i do love to shoot winter scene in B&W,
maybe i'll just take the 6x7 out for a spin.

Blacks camera is the only place near me that i know of that still can
do 120 film and scans.
BTW i find it easier to use a light meter the on board one seem to
over expose a bit.

Sounds like you've done your homework.

KEH has 6x7 outfits with the 90mm priced from $423 to $526, but they
are all BGN condition. If you've found a nice one, you probably aren't
paying TOO much... but you might find you can dicker with them a
little.

If the camera was mine, I'd be using it for B&W almost exclusively and
doing my own processing and printing to save moola at a lab. Darkroom
may be  your next "frontier".

Remember though that not all 6x7 Pentax cameras are created equal. There are 
four different models. And KEH bargain condition is generally quite good. It 
would be hard to find a camera that old that would qualify for better than 
bargain condition. While I think KEH prices are generally fair, they're not on 
the lower end of the scale for used equipment.

Thanks for the comments, folks.
@boris: unfortunately that was just a slip of wishful thinking, I'm
afraid. No new camera just yet, though something definately is in the
pipelines.
@ Jack, P.J. and Christine: It's taken under a bridge with a blue sky
overhead, so after getting rid of some of the blue tint from the sky,
this is what's left. Any further tweaking of the highlights sent the
blue channel off the chart. If I went back and shot it in overcast,
I'd probably get a much better raw file to work with. On my calibrated
monitor it looks _almost_ right, but it looks less good on the
uncalibrated one.

Thanks everyone!!!  I need a day or two to sober my head.  Bill, I'll get 
back to you off list.  By the by, I just checked the prices on renting MF 
film cameras.  The day rate is ok, but the deposit costs accross the board 
are really high.  No Pentax available for rental at the two big shops here 
in Chicago proper, but I may have some other options.  Cheers, Christine

I like this quite a lot. I can see that you've had to flatten some of the 
highlights, but in the process you've created an interesting look. Out of range 
elements sometimes work in  your favor. I think that is the case here.

You're going into a disaster area... to shoot for a calendar?

If the goal is to have an appealing calendar that delights people when they 
look at it, it sounds like you definitely have your work cut out for you.  It

It caused me searching for this book... :-)
Our library has only older editions (2001, 2004), so I ordered it
via interlibrary loan, also encouraging the library to purchase the new
edition.

Going 180 degrees the opposite of Christine...

I don't recall ever taking a 110 photo in my life. While I would love
to have a Pentax 110 set-up, I'll have to stumble upon one locally
because they just bring too darn much money for me to justify
otherwise. However, I did stumble upon a Minolta 110 SLR with case and
instruction manual last week for $5.

Heresy on the PDML? I remember seeing the ads in the Photo mags back
in the day...

It was in my contract.

Mind you, they never asked me for copies of the releases. It was
apparently sufficient that I promised I would have them. :-)

Definitely a color balance issue, but it's the venue not the camera.
The pool hall has a range of lighting, some quite red, some green and
pure tungsten -- all converging right at the edge of the table where
the shooters stand. So I compromise in conversion. The pics would
probably be better as BW, but I had fun trying to balance things out.
I'll probably do some conversions later, using the separate channels

Yes, there are a number of neon signs in the room, as well as televisions and a 
variety of lighting. It's a challenge.

The establishment is called Snookers, and it's the contemporary reinvention of 
the pool hall: part dating bar, part sports bar, but with lots of pool tables 
-- around 30 I believe. The event I shot was the opening night of an 8-week 
tournament for ad agency employees, many of which are attractive young ladies. 
That's particularly true of the media buyers, whose job it is to get a good 
deal for the clients from the folks who sell ad space and broadcast time for 
internet sites, magazines, and television networks. In the old days, before PC, 
the sales people at the various venues were called "space cadets," while the 
agency buyers were referred to as "media bunnies." Of course, being a very 
considerate and thoughtful person, I would never use that kind of insensitive 
language.

Thanks, but you can find them all day long on eBay for not a lot more
than that. I could have a lot MORE fun with it if I could locate B&W
film, since i'm such a cheapskate when it comes to paying for
processing these days.

This little camera is opening up a new door for me. ANY fool can shoot
a film when it is easily available, but it takes a really SPECIAL KIND
OF FOOL to get into it years after the film has stopped being
manufactured and distributed.

I've just learned that there is a community of such fools. They
respool 16mm film, and once you get the hang of it you can apparently
do one in 3-4 minutes. You can get lots of different films in 16mm,
including infrared, TMAX 3200, and more. Those interested in reloading

I could do all kinds of wacky stuff with this, like make a 20x24 print
from a 110 negative. It would probably look really abstract up close,
but you might be able to resolve it into an image if you could get a
football field or two away from it.

What I always did when my only lens was a 58mm was to crop as
needed. These days you can also stitch frames together.

More likely, if the lens is too short, you crop in post production.
If the lens is too long, you get creative and look for alternate
compositions that are detail shots.

I understand how that would work.

Too long doesn't really seem as much of a problem, given the ability to 
stitch frames. I'm already dealing with that in APS-C, where my 18mm 
lens produces the F.O.V. that a 28mm lens would produce on my film cameras.

Too short is another matter. You can only crop in so much before you 
begin to lose IQ. Are you going use a 12Mp camera to produce a 2Mp 
image? Move in closer if you can, but sometimes you just need a longer 
lens.

Note: I don't remember what actual pixel count they're specifying for 
the X100, but I have a hazy recollection it's around 12Mp.

It doesn't have to be interchangeable lenses, although that would have 
more appeal for me. A longer lens might be an auxiliary converter that 
mounts on the existing fixed lens.

All other things being equal, a camera that could use a selection of 
interchangeable lenses would appeal to me more than a camera that 
offered a selection of auxiliary lenses that mounted to a fixed lens. 
But that camera offering a selection of auxiliary lenses would appeal to 
me more than a camera that offered no selection.

I'm not saying there's only one way to solve the "problem", only that 
it's a problem they have to solve if they want to sell this camera to 
me. And even that isn't an absolute no.

If I found some "style" I wanted to pursue that a fixed focal length 
camera suited, this one looks like an elegant solution.

Rob,
I'm very critical of my own photographic images.  My wife gets 
frustrated when we look at my take from, say, last weekend's outing, and 
I'm all "yeah, but the horizon..." or "M, there's a tree growing out 
of her head."  She's usually more of a "Ohhh, look at the girls. Aren't 
they having fun?" type, though I do trust her eye when she's looking 
with a more artistic intent.
I honestly don't know how to feel when people who don't *love* me are 
honestly complementary of my work.  The gallery opening in Chicago was 
truly uncharted territory with so many people whose work I really admire 
actually commenting on mine.  I think that was nice, but I have my issues.
That being said, for the Annual, I'm picking out the very best things I 
did in the last year.  It's not hard.  I used Lightroom to sort for the 
year and added photos I *really* like (only about six) to a quick 
collection, made my decision, asked my wife what she thought, did a very 
little bit of processing (I actually ported one of them out to 
Elements!) and uploaded the files.


Having 80+ "favorite" images from one year's shooting is, for me, not 
likely to ever be a problem.

I used to sell those, they were quite impressive little cameras.

Good luck finding 110 B&W film.  The only type that I believe was ever 
supplied was Verichrome Pan, long discontinued in 110 and any other size 
film for that matter.


There are those who maintain that you can reload properly salvaged 110 
cartridges with 16mm film stock but the standard perforations will fool 
and "Kodak" standard film counter, (which I cannot remember if this 
camera has or not), or the perforated stock will not allow the shutter 
to cock.  Either way frame registration will be problematic.

I had one of those and my uncle had the Pentax 110 SLR. His was cuter,
the Minolta made better photos (and was a lot bigger). It looked like
"Mr. Spock's Camera" to me, was easy to old steady and get very sharp
results. The tiny SLR viewfinder and f/4.5 lens made for a focusing
challenge but with practice you could nail it quite nicely.

110 format was at one time available in Verichrome Pan. Long ago and
far away. Color negative, ASA 200, is about all that's available now.
Shoot that, scan and render to B&W as desired.

I gave my Minolta 110 Zoom SLR to a good friend about the time I moved
to California in 1980. He used it for another decade and some,
documented his daughters growing up with it. About the middle of the
1990s he called me to tell me the sad news: he'd fallen asleep on a
train in the UK and left the camera on the seat in his rush to wake
and get off the train at the proper station, didn't think of it until
three days later. I bought another one then, in pristine condition,
that I put a few rolls of film through and enjoyed playing with, but
my photographic interests in subminiature film formats had long since
gone to Minox. I gave that camera to another 110 enthusiast friend
who, to the best of my knowledge, still owns and uses it today.

Great cameras. $5? That's a lot less than I paid even for the second one... :-)

about it.  For $549.00 I get the camera & a 90mm lens.  I have read about
the camera & know about the Mirror Lock Up issue.  I have found and
downloaded  6 x 7 user manual I found on the net.  I've read about the
camera via Wikipedia.  I've opened the back, looked at the insides,
depressed the shutter using the "special trick" when no film is loaded.  I
found a photo lab very near my house, which will process 120 & 220 film,
create contact sheets, and create scans (120/220 negative at 18mb $1.00/per
neg & 120/220 negative at 19-128MB $3.00/per neg).

I've mention many times that I'd love to do/learn medium format work.  Film
is really my only way in to this kind of photography because of its
affordability.

So what do you guys think?  Should I do it?

What is the "Mirror Lock Up issue"? AFAIK, early versions of the 6x7 did 
not have mirror lock up, and later versions did.


But I don't know about any "issues" with mirror lock up on the versions 
that had it.

It can be done, several folks I know from the Submini list still do
it. It's painstaking work for 110 format due to the backing paper and
the design of the cassette. You have to cut film to length, roll it
together with the backing paper, fit it into the cassette and
reassemble/tape the cassette closed all in total darkness. You also
have to get a few un-damaged cassettes ... sometimes difficult because
most photofinishing operations just crack them in half to get to the
end of the film.

The solution to the perforation problem is to use single perforation
16mm film (or slit 35mm film to 16mm width ...) and put the
perforations on the other side of the backing paper. The Minolta 110
Zoom SLR film advance/shutter cocking mechanism doesn't have the
secondary lockout of a pin falling through the film perforations, so
all you need to do is just wind the camera (one stroke is usually
sufficient) and make your exposure. Since 16mm movie film is not
pre-exposed with a mask like 110 film stock was, frame registration is
not a problem, and who cares if they're evenly spaced? ...

it's a lot of fun), I have about six or seven Minolta 16 cameras, all
in good operating condition, plus a few accessories. And I have at
least one re-usable cassette for each of them. Minolta 16 cassettes
were meant to be reloaded ... they even gave instructions on how to do
it in the Owners Manual! If you're at all interested, give me a holler
and I can set you up with a good camera and film cassette for a twenty
dollar bill or so. :-)

There are volcanic rocks on the beach, so I guessed Hawaii or

I'll have to get my Pentax 110 out again one of these days. I have the three 
lens kit, like new in the box. I used it once. The results were quite good for 
such a small negative, scanned on a flatbed.

elected to allow me to wear official AIPP attire, reserved usually only for
officials and judges
at the National Awards etc.  Apparently, all of those at the meeting were
chomping at the bit wishing that they were in my shoes.  The Chairperson
even exclaimed in
astonishment "How the fuck did she manage to get in there?!"  To which a
highly respected photographer, who for some reason has taken me "under his
wing" this
past few months replied, "Because she has BALLS, and she is a tenacious
little thing too!"(He told me this story when I went to his studio to
collect the uniform today).


I *DO* wish you luck.

But I don't know how good of a mentor this "highly respected 
photographer" can be if he needs his eyes examined that badly.


Them ain't "BALLS". I've seen the pictures!

enough to allow her to choose which negatives she wants to pay to have 
the high resolution scans made from, shouldn't it?


Good enough to carry her through until she has time to find a darkroom 
or buy a dedicated medium format film scanner.

excellent condition and fairly priced.

Remember though, that to take advantage of those big negs, you will
need either a darkroom or a relatively high end scanner, like the
Nikon medium format film scanner. You can get decent scans on a good
flatbed, but your results will be about as good as what you'd get
from an *istD or other relatively low resolution digital camera. Been
there, done that. Fun, but not very productive. Paul

That will work if she can find a place that will do good high resolution scans 
at an affordable price. I've seen MF drum scans priced as high as $200 per 
frame. And the kind of scans you'll get from most labs are garbage.

Story"). I emailed my Getty photographer son-in-Law (

"find" and my "big plans" for it. (He's as big a nerd as I am in many
ways, so I thought he might appreciate it.) He emails me back:

"Hah, that's funny -- that's probably my old Minolta 110 if you got it
from that thrift store.  :) I had it in a box and planned to try shooting with
it, but once I realized that the film had to be sent out to develop
(unless you shot BW and did it yourself) and that there are virtually
no ways to scan the film well due to it's teeny tiny size, I chucked
it in the thrift store box.  But it's one of the cooler looking cameras
I've ever seen, cool enough that I wished it shot 35!"

When I responded with "You're kidding. You did this recently?" he said,

"Nope, it's true!  Jazz & I were cleaning out the closet and I when I
checked the Ebay value of the camera I figured it wasn't worth
selling.  I'd have just given it to you outright but I didn't think
you'd have any need for a 110 camera.  :)  It's like they say, one
man's junk is another man's treasure!"

Our library has only older editions (2001, 2004), so I ordered it
via interlibrary loan, also encouraging the library to purchase the new
edition.

In the mean time, I can see the electronic version of the 1st (2001) edition.
On page 3-22 it has the section "3. When your phtograph contains

Hoffman is a recognizable celebrity, and while the only reason for the 
women to be there is to obtain his autograph, it could be any 
"celebrity" signing those autographs. Hoffman is an integral part of the 
image, but he is not the subject per se ... the subject is the women 
pushing and shoving each other out of the way so they can get a 
celebrity autograph.


Would the photographer require a model release from Hoffman before 
he/she could sell prints of the image?

It's James Dean walking down the street in a cold rain; hatless with his 
shoulders hunched up, a cigarette on his lips.


But does the photo stand on its own even if you don't know who James 
Dean was? Show the photo to a bunch of today's college students, and ask 
them what it's a photograph of. See how many know who it is, and who he 
was.


Does the image still have value if you take the celebrity away, if it 
had been just a photograph of some unknown guy walking down the street 
in the rain? I think it does.


Or, since someone mentioned that a celebrity's estate can continue to 
control the celebrity's image for 50 years after the celebrity's death, 
did the photographer just have to wait until 2005 before he could sell 
prints of this photograph without a model release?


I contend that in none of these instances would the photographer be 
required to obtain model releases in order to legally sell prints of 
their own work.


But what does the book say?

When I started collecting, the Minolta 110 was one of the first cameras
I bought - I like unusual cameras that aren't all that expensive.  I
also got one of the Mark 2 versions.  Nowhere near as interesting - it
looks too much like a real SLR!

To my shame, I've never actually put film through either :-(>

This actually may qualify  as street photography here in the hinterlands. Not to 
make Frank jealous.
