Re: OT: Any US list members with knowledge abou the used (motor)yacht market?
It is indeed somewhat on topic as the yacht is my new shooting platform for my Pentax gear :-) I will buy it unseen! I was in Holland two years ago finding two boats. By the time I got home, both were sold! It costed me about $ 4000 and no boat! I will however do a marine survey. It cost cost around $1000. In addition, there are Norwegians in Florida who do business helping people buying boats arranging everything. For about 1.3 million Norwegian Kr (this include everything shipping + tax) I get a a boat that is worth in excess of 2 millions in Norway so the economical risk isn't that great. I will use it partly as a live aboard. I work one week and have one week off so I have plenty of time for boating and photography! - Original Message - From: AlunFoto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Friday, March 07, 2008 8:38 AM Subject: Re: OT: Any US list members with knowledge abou the used (motor)yacht market? Re: Next move from Pentax: hints about sensor for next camera(s)
- Original Message - From: Tom C [EMAIL PROTECTED] Pentax basically ignored the 35mm market for several decades and did have a respectable MF presence. Where has that gotten them to today? I think it is wrong to think medium format. Medium format used a certain film type that effectively put limits on its market penetration. A 645D is just another digital camera but with outstanding image quality. Price is the limiting factor and is at present an unknown. According to Pentax and subsequently Hoya they want to be niche maker concentrating on the higher end... The simple fact is that 645 format MF cameras are off the radar of the vast majority of the camera buying public. It would be a stupid business move. The only people it would make happy is those interested in a 645D from Pentax, which is very few people. Re: Next move from Pentax: hints about sensor for next camera(s)
- Original Message - From: Tom C [EMAIL PROTECTED] The market changes fast. I think Pentax missed the mark with the 645D. If it was released 2 years ago it might have had a chance. No chance at all. It would have been far too expensive. Only when the cost is right will a 645D have any chance But, as you point out, much of the MF market has already gone to the high end Canons. Sure. Just like the biggest buyer group for the 645N was Canon EOS1 owners Personally, I think releasing a high-priced, non-main-stream camera body right now would be just about the stupidest move Pentax could make. It's sales would be dwarfed by the continued popularity of high end Canons and now the D3. Pentax needs to sell as many bodies and lenses as possible, plus look competitve in the marketplace. RE: Next move from Pentax: hints about sensor for next camera(s)
Tom Wrote: Are you sure those lenses are in production? Designed maybe, but I would think otherwise in the same status as the 645D. They're not making lenses for a camera that's not on the production line. I'm not expecting it or holding my breath, but to me it makes *more sense* to produce a FF 24 X 36 body than the 645D. Here's why: 1. Canon and Nikon both now have FF bodies on the market. If Pentax can get one out in short order they can be #3 to do so, ahead of Sony and Olympus. That would be a big feather in Pentax's cap. 2. The sales of a 645D would be relatively small compared to the sales of a FF 24 x 36 body because the market is smaller. Pentax 35mm body/lens owners out number Pentax 645 owners by a large factor. Can't begin to guess what it is, 100-to-1, 1000-to-1? 3. Moving to a 645 format is much costlier to non-645 system owners because they must buy into a whole new system. I'd personally be more likely to buy a FF Canon or Nikon 24 x 36 body if I was going to change systems. Last but not least it would still fit in the same camera bag. :-) 4. Pentax can do the in body sensor crop when DA lenses are attached, preserving the usefulness of the DA lens series for those that have purchased them. 5. It can't be any harder for Pentax to design and manufacture a FF 24 x 36 body than the 645. They have all the basics. Yes they would need to reeingineer the image processing engine, have a larger LCD, and other firmware/hardware changes, but that's a given with any new camera model. The only thing really holding them back would be whether they can obtain a sensor at a price point that will put the resulting product within reach of a large number of customers. REPLY: 1. The fact that Nikon and Canon have FF camera on the market doesn't make it easier for Pentax to sell one. As Nikon and Canon FF bodies consist together at about 1% of the market the potential sales volume for a Pentax FF is minuscule indeed. I'm sure that the FF market share will increase but not significantly in the next couple of years. As an FF Pentax will be compared to Nikon and Canon FF camera it needs to be equal in other departments as well; not just the sensor. 2. Nobody knows the size of the MF based digital camera market as noone is really selling any. Mamiya is a microscopic player several times bankrupt and until a major player in digital cameras actually market an MF digital camera, the market simply won't happen. Also, the size of the market is dependent on the price of the 645D; an unknown at this point. My guess is that a 645D at twice the price of an FF Pentax K-mount Nikon killer will sell twice as much as that FF camera. As for lenses; there are much more pofessional grade Pentax MF lenses out there than Pentax K-mount pro glass. Most of the Pentax K-mount lenses are kit zooms and the 50/2 lens. None of them use by folks likely to buy a FF Pentax DSLR. All MF lenses are basically pro lenses in this regard and Pentax got a significant market share in the MF world; up to 50%. 3. As Pentax MF cameras are among the most popular MF systems of all times there are plenty of potential users for this camera. Besides, there are those who will want a sensor twice the size of any Nikon and Canon thus obtaining image quality not available from those brands; perhaps optimized for resolution rather than speed or high ISO performance. 5. It is much harder for Pentax to manufacture a K-mount FF camera than the 645D as the FF camera will need to compete with Nikon and Canon whereas the 645D will outperform Nikon and Canon in image quality and compete with obscenely priced digital backs. In addition, the 645D is built around the old 645 chassis, mirror, and finder system. Long since payed for. Its electronics is derived from the K10D or coming K-mount bodies. It also doesn't face the same demand for fast AF and image processing speed as a Nikon/Canon FF competitor will as it will be targeted at high resolution uses; typically landscape and studio use. But it might be just my monitor First of all... if the image looks good in Photoshop but bad on the web (or vice versa) it's not an issue of monitor calibration. Even if your monitor is way off, it should be pretty much equally off with both sources. What you have happening is some kind of colorspace issue. In Photoshop, check the VIEW menu and make sure proof colors is not checked . If there is a check mark next to it, click it once to uncheck it. (If you really want proof colors on, use Windows RGB under Proof Settings, even if you're on a Mac. But I'd keep it completely off for now, as a control.) Next, go to the EDIT menu and click Convert to profile. Select sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as your DESTINATION space and click OK. Edit the image in any way you like to make it look good to you. Now convert from 16-bit color to 8-bit if it isn't already in 8-bit color. Now size down if necessary. From the FILE menu use Save for web When the Save for web dialog comes up, move the whole thing to one side so that you can see both the original image and the Save for web image at the same time. They should look the same. I usually *do* check the ICC Profile box in the Save for web dialog. Select your JPEG quality level and click SAVE and you should be done. To check, leave the original file open in Photoshop and open up the new Save for web version and compare them side by side. We are tentatively planning to do the southern coast and Lake Myvatn region, though I'm not sure if Lake Myvatn will work out. REPLY: I've lived in Iceland for two years. The southern part is a good choice; particularly the area from Vatnajøkull to the Snefellsnes peninsula. Myvatn is great for photographing ducks. I guess you are going to hire a car. The main road is very good except for a part in the nordeast where it is only dirt road. Minor roads may just be tracks and you might need four wheel drive. Some rivers don't have bridges so you have to drive through them. The Rekjanes peninsula near the airport at Keflavik is quite scenic and theres a seabird colony near Krisuvik worth visiting. The area around Myrdalsjøkul is very scenic with some spectacular waterfalls. At Vik, the southernmost part of Iceland have some scenic locations and a puffin colony. Otherwise there are those obvious destinations like Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. If you are interested in shooting puffins the Latrabjarg birdcliff is hard to beat. This is the westernmost part of Iceland and it is hard to reach. The roads are awful but you can drive to the birdcliff. The puffins there are basically tame. If you go by car remember to stock up with gas before driving into the wilderness. There are less than 300 000 people in Iceland, a country the size of Ireland. Half of them live in Reykjavik. The weather is basically awful with wind and rain. However, if it is bad in the southern part of the island it probably much better in the north and vice versa. Tim wrote: Another reason for preferring FA* was that he found the Ltd more a piece of jewellery. He expected he would feel a bit uncomfortable with using it outdoor under rough conditions. I can sympathise with this. The built of the FA* begs for real life use. He asked me if I felt the FA* to be a close range lens. Any comments on this? REPLY: I've owned both the FA* 85/1.4 and the 77 Limited. The FA* is the only FA* lens that didn't meet my standards optically. I found it to be poor performer at infinity distance (but great at close distances) to such an extent that I sended it to Pål at Pentax Norway. He said it was identical to his sample...I sold it cheaply to a PDML member who was very happy with it so there you go... In addition, the Limited is far more durable finish wise; at least the silver one is anodized on metal whereas the FA* is just soft paint on soft plastic. The FA* scratches incredibly easily and all my FA* lenses looks like shit from heavy outdoor use. All my Limited lenses look like new with the same usage. I feel that the FA* is primarily a portrait lens whereas the Limited is an all rounder with state of the art optical performance in all respects. This feature, like all others, has been and would be sold to the customer. Sorry, but this is not how it works. The linkages is not regarded a feature that can be sold to the customer. It is an expense that do not increase sales but decrease profit. Eg the SR feature probably double or quadruple the potential sales of the K100D; very much worth the added cost. None of the competition offers more extended backwards compatibility than Pentax anyway so it is very likely that Pentax doesn't feel they are loosing anything by removing the linkage. Surely we are not let to grope around in the dark. Now we even know there will be a body above the K10D quite soon... Maybe, just maybe, the market is pushing Pentax into bringing out a camera with a 10 mp sensor that will not yield very good images at high ISO, or even moderate ISO, thereby in some shooting situations partly or wholly canceling the advantage of shake reduction. We just don't know, because Pentax won't show us high ISO images. So we grab what's available and worry about what we see there. I've added four images to my portfolio at Photo.net: http://www.photo.net/photodb/member-photos?user_id=266609 They are all shot in august this year with the Pentax 645NII and the Pentax645 33-55/4.5 lens close to home. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5030349 This is a four minute exposure shot after the sun had set. The mountain is colored by the red afterglow whereas the rocks in the foreground is colored by the blue sky overhead. The location is the western side of the Moskenes island; the outermost of the major Lofoten islands in Northern Norway. This area represent the wildest coastal landscape on the planet and it is only accessible by boat. Straight ahead behind the montains runs the worlds largest maelstrom made famous by Jules Verne (20.000 leagues under the sea) and Edgar Allan poe (A descent into the maelstrom). The mountains in the image are among the lowest in the area at about 500metres tall. The boulders are about the size of houses. In the distant montainside, slightly to the right of the center of the image is a cave the size of a cathedral. This cave contains 5000 years old, stone age cave paintings. To the right of me is the open ocean where the next landmass is Greenland. To the left is a vertical mountain side that is about 800 meters high. Incidentally Poe describe the view from this mountain like this: A panorama more deplorable desolate no human imagination can conceive. To the right and left, as far as the eye could reach, there lay outstreched, like ramparts of the world, lines of horridly black and beetling cliff, whose character of gloom was but the more forcibly illustrated by the surf which reared high up against it its white and ghastly crest, howling and shrieking forever Pretty strong stuff there form Mr. Poe. Anyway, there were people living there to about the early 50's. Behind the mountain is a place named Hell. It is the only harbor in the area. There were several houses there and even a school. One of the gullies in the mountain in the picture is actually the school road for the kids living in the eare where the picture is taken. In the winter they uses ice axes (no, I'm not making this up). In the early 50's all the houses were dismantled and it is only inaccessible wilderness there now. Unfortunately the small size of the image on the web take away some of the impact. It works well as a large print. I think that the light communicate some of the gloom described by Poe. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5030355 I walked for an hour or so in the mountains in dense fog hoping that I eventually would get through it and that there would be photo oportunities. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5030361 I've had about six trips to this pond on a small island. In late august the light was finally on my side. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5030363 This is a previsualized image. I passed this mountain pond in 1999 and saw that it was an image here when the sun set. In mid august this year I finally got around doing it. He's authored this article on the battle for the 10% of the DSLR market not owned by the big two. One of the reason these company own this much of the market is bevause they have basically been left alone... This is about to change. Particularly Sonys marketing and engineering muscle will be felt. - Original Message - From: Mark Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yep. It's SOP for Japanese companies (and many smart non-Japanese companies). It's called the Kanban system. I saw it in action in detail on a tour of a Dunlop tire factory a few years after the company was bought by the Japanese. It depends greatly on being able to quickly change production lines from one product to another, but in return you get to minimize your inventory of both raw material/parts *and* finished product. All parts assemblies on my 645n has a date printed on them; the body covers, the circuitry boards, the chassis etc. All dates are within two weeks of each other; most within days. It is obvious that the subcontractors manufactures the parts as close as possible to Pentax assembly date. Re: DCRP K100D Review
- Original Message - From: Tom C [EMAIL PROTECTED] FWIW, Pentax expected DLSR sales volumes are dwarfed by even Sony. They are only 6% marketshare behind Sony and is the fastest growing DSLR manufacturer at present. If Sony doesn't release anything hot at Photokina the K100 and K10D sales could surpass Sony. I agree with the principle of don't build more than you hope to sell. That's common sense. OTOH, not having product available on the shelf when a customer wants it does not help sales or loyalty. Their factories are going on 24h basis in three shifts withour being able to fill orders. Products that are sold faster than they are made may actually create an even more demand. The prouct is seen as very desirable as so many people wants it. Pål -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: K10D - facts and speculations
- Original Message - From: K.Takeshita [EMAIL PROTECTED] So my real vote is no USM capability for the K100D :-). Many people might wish this be wrong and I have absolutely no foundation in predicting anything on this. The problem I have with this is that it is at odds with Pentax naming policy where you can infer compatibility from the name of the product. It is reasonable to assume that when Pentax was about to release a new series of cameras anyway why not use a naming policy that singles out USM compatible models? If The K100D is not compatible theres no way for the customer to see which K-series cameras are compatible and which are not unless looking at the specifications. The A-lenses were compatible with the A series. The F- lenses with the F bodies (SFX etc..). FA lenses with the (P)Z-series, wheres the new USM lenses are compatible with only sone K-series cameras. If it is so, it is very confusing. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: Re: Full Frame/Canon (and their propaganda)
- Original Message - From: KEN TAKESHITA [EMAIL PROTECTED] As Canon themselves admit, cameras with FF sensors would be too big and heavy to carry. Cameras not carried would be photos not taken. They don't have to be as big. The Pentax 645D is in fact smaller and will have twice the sensor. Canon make big camera because they sell better than small ones according to their marketing philosophy (big is expensive; small is cheap - I saw this in an interview with an engineer; they dicide first the size of the thing based on marketing, then make it so). Look at the Elan II; a crappy entry level slr approaching the size of a Pentax medium format camera for no other reason that it will impress the customer in the shop who seem to get more (air) for their money. Making something small cost money; sometimes a lot if you really want to do real miniaturization. Pål -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

It is a shame that the glass holder isn't standard with the scanner. It is basically useless without it. Plus, where can I find the standard, less expensive glass holder in stock? My understanding is that the Sony brand is quite strong in Japan and in the US. However, in the rest of the world Sony is just another anonymous consumer electronics manufacturer, most known for entry products like the walkman, with no more brand status (if any) than Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo or anyone else. So I can't see they will sell much on the brand name alone. They have a far weaker brand recognition than Nikon and Canon and even Pentax. Re: Turbulent age
- Original Message - From: DagT [EMAIL PROTECTED] People are moving, and Canon looks oldfashioned. I think that the brand perception with digital is moving away from the structure it had for film cameras. Camera are now consumer electronic products, an area where brand recognition traditionally has never been strong; price/performance will be more important along with distribution and sales outlets. What the pros are using, and particular the photo journalists, are less important now for brand recognition. In addition, many slr buyers come from a different background than previous slr owners; they are now not necessarily photo enthusiast nor do they necessarily know anything about brands for film slr's.
