Re: FILM DEAD ?
Dropped by a local photo store last weekend and saw people flocking at the new Leicas, 23 hundred a piece on sale at 10% off. Judging by the enthusiam at such shameful prices, it's hard to believe film is dead. Tonghang.
Re: pz-1 viewfinder quiry
My PZ-1p does not have this problem, not at all, as far as I can tell. I compare it with many cameras and I think it's among the best in Pentax, certainly better than any of the more recent designs. I wonder if your sample had its finder glass repaired or replaced in the past? Tonghang. FS: lots pentax stuff
I'm adding to the list of stuff for sale I put out a few days ago, Feel free to bundle. Shipping is $6 to USA, other places at cost. 1. AF280T TTL flash. With manual, soft case. Excellent condition. Swivel/bounce head, many modes. All that sophisticated stuff. $70 or offer. 2. SMC-M 28/3.5. One of the best Pentax lenses. Excellent condition. Caps and filter. $65 or offer. 3. SMC 50/1.4 (52mm filter ring) Bigger class, more impressive. The guy I got it from sometime ago said it was sharper than his expensive Contax T* lens (?!). Anyways, Caps and filter included, $65 of offer. (I already have pending interest on this one since the last post, but no commitment yet, so I'm lowering the price.) 4. ZX-M body with Grip FG (has possible defect.) I paid about $30 plus tax for the FG alone. I want to sell the combo for $40 or offer. The camera is in perfect condition, except I observed one or two frames slightly overlapping in some of the rolls I took with this camera (Is this related to battery strength, anyone knows?) Anyways, I got plenty bodies already. Comes with cap, manual. 5. ME-Super body (needs CLA) The body is hardly used which is very evident when you see it. Still has the plastic stuff on bottom. I've been happily using it. Very smooth. But a week or two ago, some oil appeared on the shutter blades out of nowhere. Needs a CLA to recover. Going for $25, with cap, manual. 6. AF160 Autoflash Guide number 16 meters. 2 Auto modes, one manual mode. I have two of these. Very small and useful at the same time. You can use it with non-Pentax (oops, excuse me) and non-35mm gear, auto modes work fine. $12 each. 7. Cable releases. I have several cable releases, all metal with stopper screws. $4 each. 8. Also I'm thinking about selling my flagship PZ-1p with several still shrink-wrapped batteries for it (6 I think.) Lots of features, all real no hype and designed for use. Excellent condition. Has manual and cap of course. Don't know what to ask for it. Ideas? I also have some tripods to give away, but only if you are local. And just so y'all don't get the wrong idea, I'm not dumping my Pentax. Just trying to streamline in order to use existing (Pentax) equipment more. Thanks for looking, Tonghang.

FS: Pentax SMC lenses, etc.
SMC-M 28/3.5 This is regarded as one of the best pentax lenses, possibly the best 28mm. Condition is excellent, flawless in every way. Perfect class, no dust inside either. Comes with both caps and Hoya UV filter. SMC 50/1.4 (52mm filter ring) This is the K version, not the M version. So it has a larger filter ring. Bigger glass. Very sharp. Condition is similarly excellent, perfect glass no dust. Comes with both caps and a coated sky filter (Vermer.) SMC-A 70-210/4.0 This is the best long zoom by Pentax I believe. One touch design. Light weight. Good contrast. Has one light mark ("cleaning mark", as they say) on front element. You hardly see. Shouldn't be problem (hasn't been for me.) Otherwise similarly excellent, no dust. Comes with both caps, and sky filter (of some make.) Price is $75 for each. Make offer if this is too high. Shipping is $6 to US. Other place at cost. Also, my hardly used ME-Super developed some oil on the shutter and now needs CLA (what a shame!) Any one can use it for $25? I also have a ZX-M with battery grip (for using 4-AA batteries) which is working fine but has given me an overlapping frame once a few rolls, how about $40? BTW, I'm not giving up on Pentax, just lightening up. Thanks for looking. Tonghang.

FS: Winder ME II
Flawless condition functionally and cosmetically. Look like new. No marks any where. Clean inside out. I'm giving up my ME-super, so don't need the winder any more. The winder works with ME, ME-super and SuperProgram and Super-A, except the latter ones also have their own dedicated winder. I don't know where I left the manual for it, can't seem to find it. Ask $35 or offer, let me know. Tonghang.

Re: eBay Dilema
I wouldn't be so categorical about this. It's very common in my experience, especially with eBay bulk sellers, that they don't inspect or have the knowledge to examine the items they sell properly. Compromising a settlement is perfectly acceptable to me. I once bought a winder which had its auto shutoff circuit bad, leading to draining batteries. It's something you wouldn't figure out by quick examination. I asked the seller to either take it back or refund 50%. He chose latter, because he realized that if he relisted it, he would have to state the defect and may get even less. That was the option I was hoping for also, since I did like the winder. In the end though, after a few sets drained batteries, I figure I were not able to remember to turn it off all the time even though I tried, so I sold it as a defective winder. I think it's generally a wrong approach to presume the other party is a con because it smells like it. Rather, you consider what's best for yourself, whether to take it back and risk finding the indicated problem or to give a refund. Whether the other party is a con or not is really irrelevent, because you are the one making the decision, not him, and you do so on your own behalf. Tonghang. Re: OT: Barebones Darkroom
This is exactly what I'm thinking of doing too. B&W has the advantage that you can use very fast film and do the pushing yourself. B&W negatives are also easier to discern than color negatives IMHO. I read some B&W books lately, it seems quite easy to do just the processing part. Color film, on the other hand, would be a lot more trouble and not much fun to process due to lack of variation and strict temperature requirement (not to mention added cost due to the short life the developers.) I'm planning to do this (B&W processing) when I can get some vacation. If you get to do it first, I'd be interested in learning your experience. Tonghang. Re: OT: Leica M4-P for $110...
I assume the seller might get to pay a lower eBay commission, that for $110, rather than a whole lot more for a price over a thousand, say. But then I suppose the seller also run the risk that the seller might not follow through, of come back to demand the $110 price. I have in the past made early offers to sellers. But it seems that the sellers then assume that they would get at least what you offer if the auction lasted -- you would bid your offer in the end. So it never worked out. Make contact prints without enlarger?
I've never done any printing myself, but I was reading about making contact prints from negatives, and it would seem unnecessary to use an enlarger for this purpose. It seems you'll just need a contact frame and a way to shine light onto it. Of course I don't know how you'd control the exposure time. Anyone like to explain this process? Tonghang.

The logo "PENTAX" is cleanly removed from the camera top. I bought this as part of a kit from some guy who wouldn't explain why he did this. . Ansel Adams describes photography to be three parts: Camera (How equipments work), Negative (How and what to meter in a scence), Print (Darkroom stuff.) If one if doesn't do "Negative", nor "Print", does it not make one an equipment collector (doing "Camera" only)? I guess I'm leaving out two things though: composition and capturing the moment. Even I'm not taking myself serious anymore. I'm sure Pentax, as just about any company, makes product decisions based on "market research", on what the average Joe out there buys. You see the Canon Rebel is the #1 selling camera. No doubt that's the type of camera that has the main market volume. The latest Pentax bodies and lenses, such as the ZX-7 equipped with the inexpensive 28-80 zoom, appear to me to be attempts to align with that. I don't know much about DVD players, so when I go to Fry's to buy one, how do I decide which one to buy? The features cards on the demo models, the prices and the brand names. What better do I know? I'm sure the DVD manufacterers have they eyes on people like me. I think this is how the Canon Rebel is positioned, and is a great commercial success. Very unfortunate of course. Tonghang.

Re: Asahi 1/21 Spotmeter...
As to a slip-on cap, what I've done for one of my odd size lenses for an odd camera was an old camcorder cap, about the size of the target lens, and I padded it inside with adhesive tape to make it fit. So any thing just big enough, you can probably make it work. I used to have binocular lens caps. I'd imagine they are about the right size. Visit a pawn shop. In my experience, the store would say your sister must've given them an unexposed roll. As to the scratch, it couldn't be their fault either, because your sister must've run it thru a bad camera without exposing it. There are tons of ways to make the customer feel stupid, why should they accept any blame? Two years ago, I had 2 negatives reprinted for 8x12 at Costco. The prints are OK, but both negs were badly bent thru the middle. What's most amazing is the notes that came back with each negative, both had this item checked on them, saying the negatives were damaged BY CUSTOMER! Did it help to tell them I brought in good negatives? Did it help to say their technicians were clearly lying? Did it help to say I know enough about photography to know the difference of a good and damaged negative? After much ado, I ended up paying for the reprints (otherwise I get only the damaged negs back), a compensation in the form of a free roll of film (worth 2 bucks), and the advice, also free, that I should never bring valuable photos to Costco. Real photo opp: august PUG
Personally I think Bruce Dayton's photo of a row of girls lining up facing the ocean is the most interesting one in this collection. You don't get a shot like this even if you had hired so many people to pose this for you. It won't be the same. It's too natural and uninhibited for that. So I'd think that the photographer whom they were lining up to pose for had a great disadventage. The image has a greenish cast for some reason. So I downloaded it to a graphics editor to see if I could "fix" it. No success. I also tried one or two stops of brightening. The clothing on the backs of the girls light up and show more detail. But I cannot decide if this is better than the original. Tonghang. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Fuji Provia 100F: great film
Just got a roll of the Provia 100F, pushed to 320. Great film. Grain is visibly bigger than Sensia 100, but the color is truely briliant. Haven't tried it unpushed yet. Bad lens condition good for portraiture: "There are many small scratches on the front glass. The rear glass is better, with but a few scuff marks. There appears to be a few specks of dust inside, but nothing unusual." ... "Because of these imperfections, this lens will probably not be as sharp as a pristine sample, but it is actually better to have a lens with slight softness when taking portraits, and in fact many people spend extra dollars buying soft focus filters or resort to smearing vaseline on filters to try to soften the image for portraiture. Processing color slide film at home
I remember having seen some discussion about this, but don't remember if it was on this forum. I believe there is a kit of sort that one could buy to process color slide film at home. My questions are: How many rolls do you have to process before it becomes economical, not counting one's own labour? Also, does it require some setup such as darkroom? Is there a can-like container of solution that you can buy, in which you would just drop the film (the kit comes with a film canister opener), close cover, shake for 2 minutes, and it's done? Re: ricoh rikenon lenses
I have a Ricoh lens (50mm2.0 Rikenon) which I tried on Pentax bodies including the 5n. It has this "P" position on the aperture ring. But it does not correspond to the "A" position on Pentax lenses: The cameras do not recognize they are in aperture priority mode, which they do if a Pentax lens is shifted to "A". Instead, the camerase treat it as a very small aperture. Beside this, I also suspect the metering is not quite right either. I can put aperture on, say 8, on both Ricoh and Pentax lenses, and the cameras give different light meter readings. These lead to me to see the Ricoh, at least this lens I have, as compatible with Pentax bodies only for the mount. I for one almost never look at anything other than "buy-it-now" -- no time to wait out an auction and don't want to bid max in the beginning. EBay makes it easy by puting this red icon next to the items. So the point is, that as a seller, you don't necessarily get the benefit of bigger crowd by dragging it on longer. If a seller is content to sell at a price, then (if I were him) I'd use that as "buy-it-now" price, and let the auction takes its course if it doesn't sell that way. No dilemma: Re: FM3A dilemma
Specs can be deceiving. You got to try it. I brought an LX to the store and tried FM3A along side with it. FM3A feels like crap (excuse me for the expression.) I see these deficiencies: 1. No interchangeable finders 2. No OTF meetering 3. Only 3 focusing screens (none of which I like) 4. Feels flimsy and cheap (knock it on the table it might break) 5. Can't buy 2nd hand, therefore price is too high But two things it does have over the LX: 1. Flash sync at 250. 2. Quieter shutter. 3. Feels lighter in weight (plastic inside?) The LX is clearly more fun. What Kodak can do: film scanners in Walmart
I looked over a lady at a local Walgreen drug store, printing some 8x10 photos on a self operated Kodak photo scan/print machine, you know, one of those vertical yellow machines with a touch screen on top. These machines are in Walmart as well. The print quality from the print scan was surprisingly good, and you can adjust the level of brightness and do cropping as needed. The machine has ports to read floppy disk, cdrom or a digital camera memory stick, as well as scanning prints directly. Wouldn't be wonderful if the machine could scan negative and slides as well? Imagine you shoot a roll of chrome, study them under your brilliant loupe (which would the Pentax 5X), pick the best one and walk to your friendly local drug store any time of the day, scan and print 8x10, for merely 3 bucks? No need to buy $500 film scanner yourself, print only the ones you like, and no need to buy a $1000 digital camera which becomes obsolete fasters than computers. Wouldn't that be great for everyone? I'm sure Kodak could make a lot of money, AND make film photography last a long time. Tonghang. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Kodak: a company shoots its own foot
Speaking of Kodak, I think it's pretty rare to see a company that throughout the years has been doing all it can to destroy its own baseline business. They sell film, and yet every few years they come up and some stupid (IMHO) contraptions to make film photography less and less interesting to the mass population. 110, APS, and the $10 disposable cameras. Look how popular they are these days, and how bad the results are. Small wonder people are moving to digital camera en masse. Just the other day I heard some clown on radio talking about how $100 digital cameras take photos that are "good enough" for most people. If Kodak really wants to sell film, where they had their an advantage over other companies, they should advocate 35mm, medium format or even large format, where they can sell large amounts of film. They've been just the opposite. Regards, ___ Tonghang Zhou ("Zhou" is pronounced like Joe) On Tue, 8 Jan 2002, [iso-8859-1] Frits J. I've got an MX (chrome top) for sale. I'm putting it here before it goes on eBay. Cosmetically and mechanically fine, except for the following: It needs an CLA: mirror foam is gone, seal foam deteriorated, and the shutter button sticks a bit, causing the battery to drain unless you fold in the winding level. The battery cover has some chrome chiped off it, but works fine. Meter and speeds are accurate though. I'm asking $70. Shipping to US addresses is $5. Money order or PayPal or check (needs waiting.) Re: lens value: a workable definition (dollar per photograph)?
I suppose this is where certain other brands have an advantage. In photo stores, you can rent those lenses (and cameras) for a day or a week, lenses you'd otherwise never use due to their high prices. But no Pentex for rent. I recently visited a store, not only did they not have any Pentax to rent, they didn't even have a used pentax to sell. Only new stuff, and just the zooms. But they had lots of certain other brands' used lenses, both for rent and for sale. Regards, ___ Tonghang Zhou ("Zhou" is pronounced like Joe) On Wed, 2 Jan 2002, Paul F. Re: Black MX + Pentax 50 mm. 1.2
There're a lot of warnings about getting offered an item on eBay as the second high bidder. I had occasion when I had to sell the item to the second bidder because the high bidder bid on the wrong item. He said he would -really- prefer not to proceed with the deal, but would go through if I insisted. Of course I didn't feel like insisting on the poor guy, and managed instead to sell to the second bidder at a slight loss and also got changed a bit extra by eBay for the highest bid amount. But the guy was very grateful, and I was fortunate that the second bidder obliged. So I know that trying to sell to the second bidder is not all fraud or a result of shill bidding. I got mine new for $25US at a local photo store. B&H had a used one for $12 about a month ago. I use it on the 5n and ZX-M. Re: K1000 and KX
Half stop in only some cases should be quite trivial. What the correct exposure is, in some cases, is entirely subjective anyway. In "center-weighted" meters, there are differences in the area and shape the meter covers as "center" and the rate of declines of the intensity. So two cameras can give different readings. This is entirely reasonable. Even with uniform lighting, such as the center area of a light box (you put the camera lens down directly on the light box), the meters can still give different readings, because their "center" areas are different. Camera makers sometimes publish an "altitude" map for their meters. Sometimes you see descriptions of "60/40" or "75/25". This can be different even from the same camera manufacterer. Re: Selecting a Loupe
Cheap ones are no good. I used a Peak 8X before. Terrible (low contrast, distortion, foggy, you name it.) You ought to consider a Pentax or Schneider, or use your fast 50mm lens turned over and with aperture fully open: makes better loupe than Schneider -- the difference of 5 element vs 1 element. The 5n could be the best if ...
... if it 1. Had 1/250 flash sync, and 2. Did not have that eye-sore panorama switch, and instead 3. Had the spotmeter button there, which should be a button, not a mode, so that can be used to evaluate parts of the scene in any mode, and, although not critical but still useful and perhaps trivial to implement: if it 4. Had half-stop shutter speeds in manual mode. After all, the speeds are there. Only needed unmarked click stops in the dial. And if it 5. Had the exposure hold button being a toggle (or at least an option for such.) The intuitiveness and surface simplicity of the camera makes it really good camera, even better in the MZ-S in my humble opinion (if it had the extras above.) I think the Japaness companies have a tendency to test the market for new products in Japan, before they put them on other markets, perhaps even for products that are targeted to or likely preferred by consumers of other markets (US, Europe, etc.) The effect of this, I imagine, is that the Japanese consumers end up deciding the fate of the new products for the rest of the world. All four planes to California
All four planes that crashed (on NY buildings, the Pentagon and in Pensylvinia) were headed to california from Boston or DC areas. This looks like deliberation to me. That 3 of them should complete their missions entirely and the fourth one at least successfully hijacked, all within an hour or two, shows almost fool proof execution. I like 5n better than MZ-S
I got to try the MZ-S in a local store. I think I like the ZX-5n better, for being simpler and more intuitive. The dials are bigger and easier to turn than the MZ-S also. Just the other day, I shot a whole role with the 5n, without realizing that I had put it in spotmetering mode and on auto exposure. Needless to say the result was not satisfactory. Is it useful to have spotmetering in the 5n? Of course. Did it help me? No. More gizmos don't necessarily help. I like the LX more and more. I just wish its accessories weren't so expensive. Re: PUG request
Why would you record the exposure and lighting info? To learn from and grow one's own experience, of course! Isn't this how one learns photography in the first place? There's the side benefit that such info lends others a learning opportunity when the pics are published, such as in PUG. Besides, it's fun to study how a pic is taken and all the photographic consideration that went into it. Such useful info as exposure, lighting, lens and film. What camera is used is perhaps least useful. I see a camera basically as a metering device. Everything else is about the same across all cameras and requires hardly any deliberation: holds film, gives shutter speeds 1-1000 and a viewfinder. Re: Solution: was WOW! Check this out!
I might also add, that in step 4, only one offer price per person per item will be allowed. The highest offers will be accepted. This way we avoid a bidding war amongst the list members. Solution: was WOW! Check this out!

We designate one member to bid on the item. 2. All other members do not bid. 3. Auction ends, the designated member negotiates deal with seller if reserve not met. 4. Assume, say the final price is $6000 (shipping included.) The designated member puts all itmes for list members to bid on piece wise, (read on!) 5. The high bidders win the their items. (read on!) 6. Say the sum of all bid prices add up to $7000. The designed member perforate $1000, the difference from $6000, and refund the winning bidders in proportion. 7. The designated member distribute items, shipping paid by receipients. This is fair, and there'll be no fight. There's just one problem: what if the our own bid prices don't add up to the ebay auction price? The designated member would lose out.
