I still haven't received Ann's original post.

Like the cat. Like the photo.

But it is a puzzlement.

I was using flash fill and in TAV mode ... left arrow once to see
another shot just before.

backstory - this is in my bedroom, where there is an AC that takes up a
lot of space on the
window sill (had a smaller one before with a "window" next to it) the
newer AC was messing up what used to be her favorite view.. so I
rearranged a fewstorage pieces and made her a little shelf.. the
flowered fabric is covering the AC...

Alastair - You'll like this one betterthen - :-) as in thisone I'm
making the point about the two cats..
(posted to facebook pretty much expressly for the owner of the cat whose
photo is on the wall. But I

think the photo I posted here first is better overall.

https://annsan.smugmug.com/The-KItty-Corner/Ashley-ultimate-alpha-tabby/i-D4nj222

I disagree with you on the crop on the one below - I croppeda bit on the
right to get the pull cord of the
blinds out of the photo and a tad off the bottom to keep the proportions
the way I like 'em.
I had looked at it in Elements with a tighter crop and didn't like it..
geometry works better for me

as it is.

Here's the thing - if it is cold - you can put on sweaters and jackets
and gloves and thermal undies , if it is 104 F there is a limit to what
you can

remove and still appear in public -

You'll be cured if you live here for a while. Our winter range in the
Limpopo Lowveld is about 5-28°C (41-81°F). At 22°C (72°F), like today, I'd
be wearing a jersey but seldom wear longs.

Ann, you and my wife are exactly the same when it comes to temperatures

I endure low AC settings and dodge fans at every hand from spring to well
into the Fall.
A summer drive is, no matter which direction we're going, one in which the

We are in a record threatening heat cycle at the moment, (I think it's my

looking forward to the beginning a series of staggering electric bills.

Re: Favorite June Pug

2015-06-07 Thread Ken Waller
I enjoy visiting the U.P. in late June - the days are very long given the
northern latitude and the blackfly season is usually winding down or maybe
even over.

I did a 6 day workshop last June, at the beginning of the month, and had the
worst experience with mosquitoes that I've ever had - this includes numerous
trips to Alaska (where the mosquitos are so big, some claim they are the
state bird) & probably 40 or so trip to the U. P. The mosquitoes were so bad
I had to use the shelter of a car to change lens & on several occasions the
swarm was so bad it changed the exposure on a given scene. But, there were
no blackflies, which I feel are far worse than mosquitos - they can leave
nasty welts. The tics were as bad as I've ever experienced - even tho I was
fully clothed and 'sealed up' I had to do full body scans when I was done
for the day.

In spite of the issue with bugs, I really enjoy the many aspects of the U P.
year round.

As for the cold weather - we visited Skanee in June, 2001 and had temps
over 100F. The local paper said that L'Anse (the nearest actual town) hit
105F and was hotter than Phoenix, AZ that particular day. But then we
visited Grand Marais in July, 2011 and nights dropped into the 30's with a
steady 40mph wind off the lake. Had to fire up the furnace in the shack...
er housekeeping cabin... we were staying it. Fun times up there.

Thanks, Bruce. I noticed the dustspots in my viewfinder the other day. Took the
lens off and they were still there, so I figured they would show up in the
photos.

I have a little syringe-like thing with a brush on the nozzle end, but didn't
bring it with me. I've still got almost two weeks in the country. Maybe I can
find a camera shop that could help me. I'd rather not have to do spot removal
on all my images.

Thanks, Kenneth.

I have quite a few color shots from the session. The expression in this
one just seemed to lend itself to B&W -- at least to my eye, anyway.

I'll do a crop and see how it comes out without the flowers. For some
reason, it just seemed necessary to have something there. But, I reckon
I could've framed it better.

Thanks, Bruce.

I'll see if I can burn that ear in a bit and maybe dodge the background
some in Lightroom. I was so focused on getting rid of the shine on her
skin (that was one of the last shots of the day, so it was pretty
pronounced by then) that I didn't even notice.

The line is clearer in the original version, but I have similar shots
that I left in color. I just thought that one was better suited to black
& white, and with your suggestions, I think it'll be just right.

Thanks again!

Speaking for myself, the "rules" I cited were the basic boilerplate nearly
everyone reads or is told when beginning to learn photography.
They are only a guide that can be of benefit if the chosen scene allows. The
complete opposite is a better option in many cases.

I use the golden mean instead of the rule of thirds, especially when
cropping in post.

I'm also a fan of cropping to square (still using the golden mean).

But it's not a Law -- it's a Regulation.
After all, visual appeal is about more than one structure.

So the question is -- what's your favorite Structure.

I've shot a lot of frames of automobiles racing over the last few years. I
don't know if I've shown this one to the group or not, but it's one of my
favorites. Taken at Road Atlanta's Turn 10 during the 2007 Petit le Mans
sportscar race, just before the sun went below the hills.

http://NutDriver.org/2007-PlM-Esperante.jpg

One of the Panoz Esperante cars had spun out into a gravel trap off to the
right of the shot a few feet. After coming almost to a stop in the gravel, he
pulled it together and surfed over to the pavement, creating a huge dust cloud.
In the photo, he's just regained the pavement and started accelerating through
the dust cloud to continue the race. Unfortunately, the wind was fairly still,
and it took a couple of minutes before you could see into, much less through,
the dust cloud. Several drivers had some exciting moments going through that
cloud.

Thanks for your comments, Mark. That shot is actually full frame, so I
can crop parts off, but I can't add stuff (an artist could, I can't).
The light, at that time of day, at that spot on the track, is magical.
The sun is filtering through the trees, it's mid- to late-autumn, and
the sun is basically on the horizon, too. It only took me like eight or
nine races (years) to figure it out. :-) I've shot many, many races at
Road Atlanta, but only Petit le Mans really "uses" sunset.

You might have to be logged in to Facebook, but here's another one from
that same light, even the same race, but across the track, maybe 30m or
so away from the previous shooting position:

If it requires a Facebook login, let me know, and I'll copy it out
somewhere more accessible.

That's nice, Don. I was in farm country here in Illinois yesterday; course
I didn't see nice summer views like yours--too yearly for that. Cheers,

I got my copy of the PDML Blurb book and I was very happy with the quality.
I was also satisfied with my little contribution and the presentation was,
if anything better than the picture.

It also made remember the the picture I submitted which was not chosen. It
may not have been my best picture of 2010 but it was my favorite.

My favorite from 2010 because I when I turned the corner and saw this view
I jumped out and snapped the shutter like it was a deer that might run
away. To me this is what summer in Iowa looks like.

Contarian I am -- I like Don's field of dreams better than the barn
side -- but I'm looking at all of these in the ebook and its kinda
hard to see some of them...

I like Tim Bray's street scene better than his reject and your (BRuce)
jetty better than either of your other two -- but that's
a matter of style interest... I think it may have been hard to pair the
"refused" image .

I only submitted two because I couldnt find any more I took with the
istD that I thought I'd like to see in the book. I was happy
he took both.

Don, that is a really fine landscape, but the red barn beats it. :)

I'm pleased with Mark's two choices, but "Teresa" represents the
direction I'm going now. It was one of the most defining shots in a
portrait session I did and is one where I feel everything came
together and I actually progressed as a photographer, so it has
special meaning to me. 'Course that's probably exactly why it was
refused: meaningless to everyone else! :)

Pretty bird. Since she is a captive bird and you have more
opportunities to photograph her, you should try to get her looking more
towards the camera. Otherwise it's a very nice image.
