[VFB] Re: Danish Fly MAGNUS
There are several versions, one with the bead chain above the hook shank, one with the bead chain below the hook shank and the bullethead. Fo myself, I do not like the idea of placing the bead chain at the bend as I like to keep this area of the hook as clear as possible for maximum hooking ability. With a couple of beads in the way, I'm not sure that it would hook as well. You are talking about eyes, whereas back in the 70s when this fly was developed, I suspect that the weight of the bead chain was the main consideration and more important than it's appearance as eyes. To All Swappers, So - against all belief, I'm sure, I have the flies packaged up and ready to ship. I will not waste space or insult anybody's sensibility to make excuses about the slight delay in getting these out. It's been the gnarliest year of my life BUT I should have taken care of this LONG ago. Please accept my sincere apologies. I hope that any bitterness that any of you harbor against me will be transformed into fish in hand this season. Two orders of business... The first two people who sent in flies are receiving special extras. I've acknowledged who they are before but I honestly cannot remember (I've slept since then...)...would you please let me know who you are? There were a few people who did not send in flies (I COULD say that I've still been waiting for them...but nobody would buy it...). So we have two full sets of dries and nymphs that are unaccounted for. I propose that we decide on a worthy recipient; does anyone know of somebody who could really USE 9 nymphs and 12 dries. Meaning...someone starting out, someone who just got laid off and could use a pick me up? Some homeless flyfisher (don't laugh...the first trout I caught was on a fly bought from a homeless flyfisher in Boulder, CO). I'll take suggestions off list. [VFB] Re: Left hand reel
To me, left hand wind (LHW) refers to the way the reel is set up to operate, therefore a reel set up for RHW reel is wound in by the right hand, usually after changing the rod to the left hand but not always. Initially, in my early days as a small boy using centre pin reels similar in action to a fly reel, I used my right hand to wind in and the reel was mounted accordingly. Then came spinning reels which at that time (mid 1950s) were almost all left hand wind. As Don O noted, one gets so used to this that it eventually becomes automatic and so I wind in with my reel set up for LHW. Once I found a near new Hardy perfect 31/8th model which was RHW but it was such a bargain that I bought it thinking that I could manage with it. Not so, as I found myself constantly grabbing for a handle that wasn't there. As a result I sold it. My son is left handed and he casts with his left hand and retrieves with his right. All my reels, be they fly, spinning, centre pin, baitcasting or large saltwater multiplier are LHW with only one exception that I can think of which is a saltwater multiplier which I will probably sell when I find a suitable replacement. Since the rope-dub is a technique, not a pattern or recipe, the applications will be literally for thousands of patterns, both old ones up-graded with the rope-dub and new ones designed based on the rope-dub's capabilities. The bottom line, of course, is fishability. With buggy-looking segmentation and near bullet-proof durability, it's perfect for the flyfisher who wants great fishing flies. The speed and ease will allow that same tier to tie 5 times as many flies in the same time. If you want to design new patterns, it extends the realm of 'dubbung' 10-fold, allowing the use of materials for dubbings and styles of dubbing that haven't been seen before. [VFB] Re: Small saltwater stainless hooks
Don O I wasn't thinking when I said stainless steel because many of the saltwater hooks are tinned or nickel plated which are possibly even better. I have discovered to my amazement that I do indeed have some size Mustad 10 C71S SS hooks, left over from a past fly swap, so I am going to give them a try. The trouble with me is that I have a lightning fast response to a tug on my line, when all I want to do is let the fish turn with the fly and hook itself. I find it hard to slow down and as a result my hookset tends to be, shall we say, a bit on the strong side. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B. C. Canada Subject: [VFB] Re: Small saltwater stainless hooks Nev, Locating small #10 and ss fly hooks is pretty hard. You can usually find a box of 100 #10 ring-eye in a bait shop, not in a fly shop. You may have to bend the kirb, but that's not hard. Also look into circle or semi-circle hooks if you will have any long or slack line fishing. If you are tying simple patterns, tho, it may be better to go ahead and tie disposable or re-tyable flies on regular bronze hooks. Current thinking is that it's kinder to the fish to have an easy-to-dissolve hook in their mouths if they break off. A stainless hook takes forever to corrode, and the fish will usually weaken during that time and get picked off by a predator. Mustad, EC, and other hook-makers are making heavy bronzed 3XX wire hooks for saltwater use, as a #10 std. stainless will bend or break off in a big fish. These heavy wire hooks also supply the weight needed to get the fly down. DonO --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] Flies for Pink salmon in saltwater
I'll tell you what I need them for. Every odd numbered 2nd year, there is a run of pink salmon (humpback) to this part of British Columbia - basically the Fraser River sytem. Every even numbered year - the pinks run to other areas of BC- notably the Queen Charlotte Islands in northern BC. I have usually fished for pinks in the Fraser in past years, and although I have caught them in saltwater I was never as successful as I felt I should have been. it seems that I have been using flies that are too big, because the pinks in saltwater feed on euphasid aka krill which are small - hence the size 10 hooks. I didn't know that you could get saltwater hooks in size 12. I will try and post a photo of the type of fly that I am tying in the File Section of Google groups. http://www.flyfishbc.com/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/1762 Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B. Don Zap-a-Gap is a well known brand and they market several different types of super glue. Thin, gels and so on. They even have a Zip Kicker for instant and I mean instant set up. [VFB] Re: Foam Hoppers
It seems that there is some confusion as to what I am actually trying to do when glueing foam to make the Charlie Boy Hopper. The process of tying the Charlie Boy hopper involves folding together a strip on foam that is attached to the hook by the bend and eye. It is a bit like making a crease fly, but the fold of the foam is in a different plain. Instead of from one side of the hook shank , over the wire shank and glue to the other side, the foam is glued from end (eye) to bend. It's hard to explain and evident in http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/details.cfm?parentID=164 It would be somewhat difficult to use contact cement in this case and super glue CA is used instead. IF I was just joining different sheets of foam together for a club sandwhich type of fly, I would choose conatact cement - either brush on or even better spray on. For Mark: I crossed the border and picked up the hooks today. Monday was a statutory holiday in BC and border traffic would have been heavy over the entire long weekend and so I waited until today. The size 12 tinned Gamakatsus are the smallest saltwater fly hook I have found to date. I think that I prefer tinned to satinless steel. I'm not sure how long it takes to break down in salt water. [VFB] We Need a BLacklist
I think that I will start my own blacklist and will not particpate in swaps or will withdraw from swaps if someone on my blacklist is part of the swap. Most of the culprits just do not communicate. Presumably they are too embarrased to do so. They get all enthused when a swap is announced and submit their name but do not check their other obligations, or more likey lose intertest in the swap over time. Even if you are ill, you should still be able to get a message out. The only exception is if the person drops dead from a heart attack. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B. C. One envelope came in with a big hole in it... flies lost. But as he was eager to tie new ones, we agreed to push the due date a week for him to be able to do his best and not his quickest. This gave the two no-shows another week too... and I called them both, since they didn't answer my PM's on the forum. The one I reached said that he had forgotten about them and was going to mail them tonight... tomorrow at the latest. The PLANNED extra week passed and, due to factors preventing me to do my stuff with pictures and sorting, so did another week. I mailed them today, three weeks later than planned. The one I didn't reached is still not to be reached. The one who said he was going to mail his flies three weeks ago hasn't said a word since... and if they had just SAID that their flies weren't coming, it wouldn't have been a problem filling both places... having five people waiting with three weeks to tie. Preventing people from participating... and making the other tiers spending extra hours behind the vise (the size range on the flies tied in this swap was #24-32... not five minute-flies to quite a few, who before this swap hadn't tied smaller than #20). [VFB] Fishing Report
Yesterday, my friend and I spent the day fishing for rainbow trout at a stream about 2.5 hours away from where I live. I rained heavily on the way there and I had noticed on my barometer that the air pressure had dropped back. I was still quite optimistic, as I have spent pleasant days on this stream in late September/early October in past years. We made good time and appeared to have the stream to ourselves, at least initially. We picked a spot that has produced reasonably well in the same month as in previous years, although this year, the water level was a bit lower than usual. I took one rod set up for fishing a nymph and attached a caddis imitation Czech nymph to the leader and another smaller rod set up for fishing a dry fly. Since it was fairly cool and not yet mid morning, we both started to fish nymphs as there was no apparent surface or hatch activity apart from the occasional mayfly or caddis fluttering around. After as while, my partner spotted a rise right up against the far bank. Try as I might, it was a bit too far for me to cast to with my light cane rod. Another disadvantage was that it was difficult to get a good drag free drift of any length due to the faster currents between me and the target. My partner tried to swing his nymph into the spot but was experiencing similar difficulties. After a good try, we decide to give up and wade down stream as far as we could see to get to another pool that my partner had fished several years previously. There was no path and so we slowly made our way downstream as the river had widened out and was fairly shallow, although we had to swap from side to side. It took about half an hour on more to get there and took a few casts on the way, but generally it was too shallow for fish to take up residence. We eventually arrived at the pool and it was evident immediately that this pool was quite unlike the last as the surface was much smoother, the water gin clear and more like a spring creek. We started to notice several smaller tan/grey mayflies and several rising fish. I figured that the best way to approach these fish was to position myself downstream of them and start at the most downstream rising fish. I crouched down tight to the bushes and slowly edged my way downstream and into position. Bushes lined both sides of the stream making it necessary to wade out into the stream to allow for a back cast. Even then, it was somewhat difficult as one had to false cast parallel to the bank and then suddenly change direction on the forward stroke of the final cast. This was reasonably successful and I put my fly pretty much were I wanted it to go. I waited for the expectant rise and..waited some more. Several cast later, I changed flies, as I was sure that I was covering the fish close enough. Still nothing so I changed flies again and again and again. I degreased my tippet for the last 6 inches before the fly and when that didn't work, put the lightest tippet material on that I had with me which was 5.5X, but still nothing. The mayflies were hatching out for quite some time, their sail-like wings prominent as they were swept downstream or disappeared in a resounding rise. By now, we were really scratching our heads. Thinking of the prominent wing, I attached a wally-wing mayfly that I knew was too big (probably a size 12)but I had nothing in that particular style. On second cast, the fly was flopped over on its side with the wing on the water and before you could say Jack Robinson a fish rose to it. I struck and felt nothing, however I discovered that the tippet was caught under the tail of the fly which had caused it to tip over. It was impossible to set the hook as the tippet was caught around the bend of the hook and I must have pulled the fly out of the fish's mouth with the point facing backwards. Moving on to the the next spot downstream, therer was a small creek that entered the stream with the usual large snag in the shape of a large log sticking out of the deepest part of the pool. Fish were active as was observed by the many fast splashes at the surface of this rough and fast piece of water. I won't call them rises because there were no insects or other things visible that they were rising to. I tried various dry flies again without so much as a sniff! My partner tried a nymph and then a large Griffiths gnat fished just under the surface. He had a couple of brief pulls but no real contact. I tried comparaduns in various sizes and colours down to size 16, Harrop duns, parachute adams, Fran Betters the Usual and still more which have always worked in the past but not today. I was totally beaten. Perhaps my flies should have been smaller - maybe size 18- 20 even, especially in the Spring Creek pool. I have no idea what the fish were feeding on in the last place as I could see nothing on the surface. It was very humbling and frustrating experience and I'm not sure what I have learned as I have yet to figure out what was happening.

I was having fun, tying a different fly each time. Was more material handling time than tying time. Strange thing...I didn't have to buy anything- had everything and then some in storage. I was only in swap #1, but I got carried away- really enjoyed tying these. With some practice... Oh, and Buggs' contribution were the 4 McDonald's burgerflies in the left column bottom. [VFB] Peggy Brenner's Hopper Swap
I picked up the hopper swap flies from my PO Box just across the Canada/USA border today. Great set of hoppers. After reading Harrison Steves III's book on foam flies late this summer, I became very interested in foam hopper and the like. In fact I now possess the best supply and variety of hoppers that I have ever had. DonO's bright chartreuse sheeps wool Katydid looks very realistic, in fact I'm sure that I saw it move its legs. So thank to Peggy Brenner for organizing the swap and also thanks to Joyce Westphal who obtained the dressing for John Foust's Baler hopper for me, although this was not part of this particular swap. It's a vise that fits the clean bench of a bacteriology professor (beside his electron microscope), not on a messy tying bench with piles of hair patches and bird skins. It suits Johan though, where he's sitting at the show tying the spectacular flies that he does. A Barracuda or a Dingo vise would almost make him look like the bacteriology professor student, sitting at home doing his homework using something his father borrowed from his work at Caterpillar Inc. LOL Personally I think some of their stuff is a little too much. A half-hitch tool for $34.95, dubbing brush for $39.95, a hair stacker for $59.95. Not that I doubt the quality (and all of their stuff has a cool look), but in my opinion there's still a point where the value in money passes the practical value. I can't see how those tools will live up to their price tags... and I can't see how their (or any) vise can live up to a $799.95 price tag either. A little 'Rolex syndrome' I would say. But that's me. I like the father's tool from Caterpillar Inc.-type anyway. Now I'm going to go and pet my bulldozers for a while. [VFB] Re: C F Tools
I started in 1974 with a crest tools vise, which I still have but it needs repair. Prior to that, I'm not sure what I used, probably hemostats: My next vise was a Regal Inex purchased from Dan Bailey in 1984 for $45.00 new. I now use the Regal for tying tube and steelhead/salmon flies. I find that it is better with large hooks than small; My ex-wife gave me a very nice Dyna-King Voyager original model with the delrin base that is too lightweight, but good for travel and I take it on my trips; Then I went with a Renzetti Traveler original model with screw adjustment and I got on well with it; Then I received an old Veniard midge vise with some other older tying materials that my sister bought in an auction in England; I also have a no name El Cheapo that came in a small plano box of tackle that one of my neighbours gave me; Finally, in Feb 2009 I went to a fly fishing show Bellevue Seattle where I watched Norm Norlander tying with his Nor-Vise and I was hooked. Upon my return home, I started looking around for a secondhand Nor-vise and eventually got one a month or so later. Prior to that, I wanted but never got a Barracuda. I haven't looked back since! Alan and others This is my set up. The nylon leader material is tied directly to the hook and around the hook shank several turns. When pulled tight, it butts up against the hook eye and hangs straight. Only the eye of the hook is placed into the clear tubing which is also attached to the end of the tube. [VFB] VFB Then Now
Just hold on a moment! The general trend in this conversation is that the VFB list is not what it used to be because it has less members now than in its heyday. The implication is that this problem of a diminishing number of members is peculiar to VFB, but I can assure you that is not. Roll back to 1995 when this list was born. I too have been a VFB member since the start. I was on Ross Parnell's list sponsored by Fly Fisherman Magazine, which closed down for a period due to the need for a server replacement and lack of funding for same. Shortly after, Byard Miller sent out invitations to various people to join his new list VFB which I did. Now fast forward to today. There are now hundreds of similar lists. Many use the Forum approach like Flybc.ca, Speypages (http://speypages.com/speyclave/) and Flyangler.ca while others use the email like VFB and FF@ which is my personal preference. I was a member of a European fly fishing list and the server was located in Germany. It folded. In Canada we have a list called CANFF which as far as I know is still available but totally inactive. Flyby.ca on the other hand is hyper-active. I am currently the President of the Totem Flyfishers, British Columbia's first and oldest fly fishing club formed under the tutelage of the late author, Roderick Haig-Brown. Formed in 1967, we are now experiencing difficulty in attracting new and younger members. British Columbia now has many fly fishing clubs spread throughout the Province. This membership problem is not confined to the Totem Flyfishers, but other clubs as well. The net Result? Although there are more people interested in fly fishing, they are more spread out and can select a club or list, forum etc that appeals to their particular interest like spey fishing. When Byard set up VFB his mail order business followed shortly after. Byard was a good friend of Murph and when Murph died suddenly, Byard's interest in VFB seemed to wane. In the early days, Byard organized huge caddis fly swaps on an annual basis for a while with 100 flies to be submitted by each participant. The last such swap was 2002. Byard is now more interested in bird photography and that's fine, but his dis-association with VFB has, in my opinion, had some affect. In summary, lack of membership and input is not peculiar to VFB. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] VFB Then Now -Suggestion
David: This is a quote taken directly from my Jan 2010 newsletter sent to my fellow club members I returned from the United Kingdom just three days ago after my longest ever stay in the UK since coming to Canada in 1972. Every time that I go back, I find things just that little bit different. It is no longer the same country that I left all those years ago, but then again, neither is the Canada that I returned to the same as the one I came to in 1972. Canada has become more urbanized over the years. While in the UK, I read a book by W.D. Wetherell entitled North of Now that discusses country life in New Hampshire and Vermont, and the fact that country life is changing and in many cases disappearing. The quotation Change is inevitable. Change is Constant is attributed to Benjamin Disraeli and is so true. I believe that in order to continue as a strong and respected club, the Totem Flyfishers must also change, but change is stressful and tends to invoke resistance. Traditions are important and comfortable, so how does one balance retaining important traditions with change? Another quote, this time by Niccolo Machiavelli states; Whosoever desires constant success must change his conduct with the times. I believe that we must adapt with the times in order to attract new and younger members. In my opinion, the present average age of members is too great and we must bring in new and if possible younger persons in order to have a group of younger like-minded members to pass the club on to. I am pleased to say that I believe that we are just beginning to make a little progress in this area and I ask each of you to diligently look out for potential new members as we go forward into 2010. So, in answer to your question, I think that the VFB must change in order to attract more members. Although I prefer the e-mail list, I suggest that we TRY the forum approach. Just take a look at this http://speypages.com/speyclave/ and look at the number of posts and threads. http://www.flybc.ca is similar. That's my 2 cents worth. (oops) Does one (collective) need the introduction of new ideas (blood) to maintain the health of the genepool? Yes, I believe we need both new ideas, topics ect. and new members - not at the expense of the experienced members but in addition to. Genetics 101. Duh, yes, from a stagnation point of view, however (oops again) the ability to think out of the box, or burn the bloody thing, as the likes of Don, Jimmy or Tony do every now and then, seems to indicate that the ability to regenerate internally, is a malaligned ability. And here we face the reality of conservatisim vs liberalism, can this be done internally, as shown by our mentors, or do we toss out the baby with the bathwater? What are you actually trying to say here? I have watched the world of fashion and glamour photography develop over a number of years, (dont try, I aint gonna tell you how many), and what astounds me, is the reinvention of the same ideas/themes over a approx 30 - 40 yr cycle (ya, argue me for a decade or so) look at what Annie Liebowitz did with the 'Stones, think you can find me a parrallel today... Flies are reinvented all the time with minute variations. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. It's all been done before, you just gotta find a new way of packaging it for today. Clark Goddard.. just look at what is popping up on Hans Weilenmans' site currently. I visit Hans site from time to time as I feel it is makes for great reference material. I have just gone back to have a look and what I see are new people and their flies being featured, but that is something that has been going on ever since Hans started the site. Yes it has been done before (the flies that is) but Han's site is a very effective medium for display. I'm NOT argueing against the reinventors, we all have to be. But the old soaks, knew a thing or two before they couldnt wade the streams any more. I'm not denying that they don't know a thing or two however, as we age we tend to get somewhat stuck in our ways. Change is stressful and is generally resisted, but change is constant whether we like it or not. This is very evident in my fly fishing club which is almost 43 years old. Welcome the new, but PLEASE, not at the expence of the more experienced. That is not my intention or suggestion at all. I am merely suggesting TRYING a change in format from e-mail list to a forum. The experienced members can still access and comment on a forum. Your mileage may vary Mr. Gosling, but hear a man with some miles on the clock. The VFB used to have a chat-room, and that was fun when people participated. What would it take, and from whom, to implement this approach? Initially, Byard was the moderator for this group. Since Byard now has different priorities I am sure he wouldn't have the time for it. I haven't looked in to hosting - however, when this group was hosted by Byard's chosen server (Jacobs I believe), he had an auction site, a chat room AND a forum site. I posted a couple of times to the forum and I remember seeing Byard's initial posts there but it never took off. What I could not understand is why he ran both an e-mail listserver and a forum on the same subject. perhaps he was trying to find out what people wanted. I, for one, don't see a problem with this site and the way it works. Again, the ease of posting photos is a huge asset if it is used. As I said before, I prefer e-mail but the Forum style seems to be more effective. Technically, Byard asked us NOT to post photos for the benefirt of those persons on dial-up. It was in the Rules. Real quick- on my soap-box, and off again. I've trained draftsmen, designers, engineers, and plant operators for near 30 years- in seminar-style environments and 1-on-one. I too have noticed a big difference in the attitudes of students, from the old hands to the new hands. The old hands are used to participating and putting something in to get something out. I won't say this is catagorically true, but the new generation seems to want to sit there and have everything delivered (ready to microwave in 20 seconds to eat, so to speak). I know this from my training seminars of operators, comparing the seminars of 20 years ago to those of today, then comparing the older ones in the seminars to the newer ones. So much is taken for granted these days. Is this a social phenominon brought on by quick-sell no-effort promotional tactics, and the fast-access/results internet? It seems flyfishermen would NOT fit this bill, as they would go out and buy flies, not tie them, if they were 'lazy', but they are not. I tend to agree, and the younger people today in fly fishing learn very fast and continue those expectations. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada Off my box again. [VFB] Then Now -Suggestion response
Hi Tony: This was David Colyn's response to my original Then Now Well said Nev. Have any solution to the well defined problem?? I sure dont. .and so I anwered him by saying what I believe and that is that forums (or bulletin boards if you like the word better) seem to have greater following than e-mail lists. I suggested TRYING forum style. I expected resistance, because people resist change because it is not comfortable. I doubt that many VFB members have really looked at the forum pages that I listed previously. If you go to this forum http://forum.flybc.ca/ you will come to a page of subjects or topics - In this case, fly tying is fourth from the top. If one clicks on that, your come to a page with a huge variety of more specific topics and just choose what takes your interest. http://forum.flybc.ca/index.php?showforum=13 another good example can be found below http://speypages.com/speyclave/showthread.php?t=38433 now scroll down just a little and you will com to a black screen entitled SPTV (Spey Pages TV) click on the arrow in the middle of the screen, turn on your speakers and watch a superb video on wader safety from Simms. The point I am trying (not very successfully) to make is that these modern forums are what today's younger anglers look for because the are far more versatile than an e-mail list and can show videos and photos with no problem. Tony, you and I are friends athough we have never met in person. I have a great deal of respect for you and for some of the other long time members. However, to quote your words.. Like you, I just don't think a forum will be a good thing. I for one just can't handle it. I believe that you could handle a forum if you wanted to, but the key is wanting to. I like the e-mail list format but it is outdated and not as versatile as other methods. The forum is not as intimate as an e-mail list. Perhaps Google Wave or something like it will eventually replace e-mail. Just my 2 cent worth. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. I have a Griffin Montana Mongoose in one of my drawers, which by many is considered a pretty good quality vise. [VFB] RE: Picric -
The BIG question is where can one obtain some in Canada? - and I better not try while the Olympics are on or I will get arrested. Last week the police and security closed the streets and evacuated an area of North Vancouver due to a supicious object. It was blown up with the aid of a robot. It turned out to be a fishing rod in a tube. Does the lifetime warranty apply? Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada Picric acid is 2,4,6-tri-nitrophenol. As with other highly nitrated products, it is an explosive. However, it's also a BRILLIANT yellow with a slight orange tint and makes a great dye. In the early years of its discovery (1700's, that's what it was used for. Widipedia says its first use as an explosive was in the mid-1800's. Probably when some clumsy chemist dropped a bottle of it and it went boom! Chemistry lesson over. RE: [VFB] Tube Fly Tying Question
Wes: You can replace a hook if it becomes damaged (usually by hitting a rock on the back cast) but the tube does not stay on if you snag and the line breaks at the knot. Lately I have run into some applications where tube fly tying would be an asset. Descriptions of tube flies always tout that in trying to catch a fish, you can break the hook off the tippet without losing the fly. I can see that, if the fly floats, but if the fly is tied onto a metal tube, I assume the fly just sinks and you lose it anyway? Does anyone have tips on how to retain the tube portion of the fly even though the hook breaks off the tippet? There no snow herein Vancouver! The weather has been exeptionally good for this time of the year. Several days of blue skies and sun, however today is a bit overcast. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada Looks like all of Vancouver's snow has decided to come to TEXAS. Started snowing at 7:30 this morning and then let up a little around 9, but coming down in big flakes right now and lots of them. Supposed to get around 5 - 6 inches by late afternoon. That much snow will cripple most of Central Texas, cause most of us don't know how to drive in it. JD -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] tubes
Wes, I've never tied or fished tube flies, but I like to solve problems. First of all, what are the advantages (assets) of tube flies, so that the solution doesn't negate the advantages of the tube fly? 1. Fly moves up leader and doesn't get chewed on. (the tube is held to the hook with the use of a short piece of junction tubing. This is flexible and prevents leverage and will come free with a lively fish.) 2. Hook styles and sizes, etc. can be changed and still use the same fly 3. Tied carefully, a tube can provide a large silhouette but remain fairly sparse which helps it to sink faster. 4. Tubes can be short or long which affects the weight and are normally made of plastic, aluminum, copper or brass. One can therefore control the depth that the tube is fished at. 5. Mikael Frodin has come up with the Fits tubing system and a regular cone or the new large diameter Fits cones can he added to the plastic tube to as Mikael puts it make 'em swim better see http://globalflyfisher.com/reviews/books/bookbase/show_single.php?id=176 6. A Finnish company Eumer has a similar tube system - see http://eumer.com/index.php?name=ProductBrowser http://eumer.com/index.php?name=ProductBrowsernodeIDX=136parentIDX=1root IDX=0 nodeIDX=136parentIDX=1rootIDX=0 7. Not really suitable for trout except large piscivorous fish. 8. It's fun, but not always as easy as it looks. 9 See attachment showing junction tubing. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada And so on... then we list the drawbacks: 1. Lose the hook and lose the fly (sinking fly only) 2. 3. Then we try to solve the drawbacks without messing with the advantages. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group.
