Re: A Tip for A T T Wireless Customers Who Are Thinking About Upgrading to iPhone 5
Good grief, people actually went into a cell store merely to preorder a phone, let alone pick up something. Usually going into a cell phone store is something I only do as self punishment. I'll admit I also preordered an IPhone 5 but I did it without even getting dressed or getting my but off of the couch. I merely had the Apple Store App installed o my old IPhone. I loaded it up and with a few taps got a confirmation email that said it would be delivered to my home on the 21st. Hope all of those folks at least got a free lollypop or something. While I no longer frequent the A T T Wireless or Verizon Wireless stores as much as I used to, I visit enough to have been truly surprised. There was a waiting list to enter the store. I asked the receptionist why the store was so busy and she said it was because of all the people who are pre-ordering iPhone 5. It would appear that not everyone was underwhelmed by Apple's keynote presentation. After leaving the store, I decided to go over to the Verizon Wireless store and, it too, was jam-packed with people preordering. All I can say is that there appears to be something magical about the Apple-effect, as I have come to think of it. By the way, I decided not to wait at the A T T wireless store. The receptionist reminded me that I can check to see if I am eligible for an upgrade by doing the following from my iPhone: 1. Open the Phone App. 2. Switch to the Dial Pad. 3. Dial *639# 4. Tap the Call button. By the way, 6 3 9 spells the word NEW. You will receive a text message stating your eligibility status. However, when I tried to go back in around 5AM when she wokeup, the delivery time had changed to 2 weeks. I then went to verizon web site and pre-ordered there. It is suppose to be delivered on the 21st. I got a 32GB for my wife, and a 64GB for myself. I am switching from ATT. I have been with ATT for many years now, and didn't really want to switch. I did it because ATT does not have LTE in my area yet. A few other reasons made me switch also. However, I now know that you can't do voice and data simultaneously on verizon network. It is the iOS software which controls everything. The braille display is for viewing and the keyboard is for typing. Controls are more basic than with a braille note taker. I would be cautious about getting the HumanWare or vario displays. Connections can be more problematic do to the nature of the bluetooth driver stacks and controls in the HumanWare products. I have an Alva BC640 and a RefreshaBraille. Both work well with my iPhone. That said, I prefer the Refreshabraille because I can turn it on and off whilst my iPhone is unlocked and it connects and disconnects without difficulties. My Alva, on the other hand, requires that I lock my iPhone before I turn the Alva on. After the display is on, I unlock my iPhone and the Alva automatically connects. However, when I write in 8 dot computer braille, the Alva is easier because all 8 dots are in a row (40 cells gives more room for the keyboard). On the Refreshabraille, dots 7 and 8 are next to the spacebar, so harder to press dot 7 for capitalisation. National Braille Press, NBP, in the US has a braille brochure with the computer braille code. They also use to sell a book training on computer braille. In computer braille, the letters are the same, numbers are dropped to the lower part of the 6 dot cell (1 is dot 2, 2 is dots 2 3, 3 is dots 2 5, Etc.), and there are unique symbols for each punctuation mark. Upper-case letters are the same as lower-case letters with dot 7 added. I write computer braille at the same speed that I write contracted braille. For large files, I find my iPhone 4 does better in 8 dot mode rather than contracted braille mode. Also, in contracted braille mode, iOS has a half second buffer. If you stop writing for half a second, whatever is in the buffer is translated and written to the field. Braille entry works whenever the keyboard is activated. Also, almost everything VO speaks is simultaneously displayed in braille. I regularly take notes in braille during meetings with speech muted. Out of curiosity, when I checked again Friday night, I was given a two to three week time for the phone to be shipped, and that is the same time frame I'm being given as I check now on this Sunday evening. Now, when I pre-ordered the iPhone 4S last year, I was able to do so on the Friday evening after I got home from work, and get it delivered on that first available day. SIM cards for GSM IPhones, was:Re: Unpleasant IPhone Upgrade Surprise
Speaking of SIM cards. If you are in the U.S. and want to use TMobile on an unlocked IPhone (GSM) you can take it to a TMobile store and they have micro and nano SIMs and they will program your IPhone for you as well. I took my unlocked IPhone 4 to a TMobile store and they gave me a free micro SIM and did the programming for free as well. A good experience and TMObile has good coverage in my area. Also, just for your record, the iPhone 5 uses a Nano SIM. The iPhone 4 and 4S used the Micro SIM which is smaller than a regular SIM, the Nano SIM is yet smaller, in fact it's outright tiny. Also, you were able to cut a regular SIM card to the size of a Micros SIM either with a sharp knife nd a steady hand along with either a Micro SIM as a template or a template you can find online along with instructions. You could also buy a special cutter which made the task a lot easier from various places, one of the best I heard is from www.CutMySIM.comhttp://www.CutMySIM.com and their cutter actually came with an adapter so you could use your newly cut Micro SIM again as a regular SIM similar to how you can use adapters to use a Micro SD card in a regular SD card slot. I just googled Can you cut a Micro SIM to the size of a Nano SIM and got a ton of results, here is what CNEt has to report: Can you cut a Micro SIM to the size of a Nano SIM?? Answer: Yes, but it's not as easy as cutting a regular SIM to the size of a Micro SIM. The nano-SIM isn't just smaller than the micro-SIM - it's also thinner. If you're expecting a new iPhone 5 on Friday, and you're buying it unlocked directly from Apple, you're going to need a nano-SIM to go with it. Obtaining one is easy if your carrier is one supporting the new device, because you can just call them up and request one. But what if you're already stuck in a contract with a carrier that doesn't provide nano-SIMs yet? Fortunately for you, scissors, some sandpaper, and a pair of steady hands will allow you to cut down your existing SIM or micro-SIM into a nano-SIM. The nano-SIM is around 40% smaller than the micro-SIM, measuring 15 x 12 x 0.76mm. That means there's zero chance you'll be able to stuff your micro-SIM into your iPhone 5 without modifying it first. But CNET reports that it's possible to cut down the micro-SIM for a nano-SIM slot - just like you could cut down your iPhone 3GS's regular SIM card for use in the iPhone 4. It does require a little more work, however. You see, not only is the nano-SIM smaller than the micro-SIM, but it's also 12% thinner. That means you don't just need to cut it down to size, but you also need to put it on a diet and thin out out a little bit. CNET's John Chan explains: Now, let's say the SIM tray on the iPhone 5 allows a nano-SIM up to 0.70mm (as permitted by the allowance in the standard set by ESTI), I will need to pare down 0.12mm on my micro-SIM so that it will fit. After a few minutes of sanding with some sandpaper (240 grit, for those who care), it was finally down to 0.70mm. But did the sanding damage the card? I'm happy to report that the card, even at 0.70mm, continued to work when inserted in an HTC One X. Sanding the non-metal side of the micro-SIM did not appear to affect how it functions. Before you go ahead and do this, wait until you receive your iPhone 5 on Friday and double-check that a micro-SIM cut down to size - without sanding - doesn't fit. It's likely it won't, but as Chan notes, we can't be sure of that until the iPhone 5 is released and it can be tested. Re: No Cradle?
Two possibilities here. The first of all is that you may be thinking of the Apple's included 30 pin to mini USB adaptor that was included in European iPhones to comply with EU regulations. Secondly if the cradle had a built in keyboard you may be thinking of the Apple iPad keyboard dock. I think the former is more likely. My distributer was goofing around the last time I sold one, so I'd have to double check the price for you, but I think it's around 600 bucks. RE: My New IPhone 5
Kelly, little late now but just for others. What you could have done is before you got the phone you could have signed up for whatever plan you wanted on the website or through the phone. Then once you got the phone you could have just taken it to a TMobile store and they would have put the nano SIM in for you. I have always had good service from Tmobile and I am sorry it was such a rough go for you. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kelly Pierce Sent: Saturday, December 22, 2012 9:19 PM To: viphone Subject: My New IPhone 5 On Friday evening after work, I became a proud owner of an iPhone 5, finally joining generation tech in living the ultra-connected, information rich digital lifestyle. I bought a 32 Gb version at Apple's North Michigan Avenue store here in Chicago. The store was a controlled chaos of hundreds of people, most of them swirling around the open floor plan to soak up the Apple vibrancy and catch the buzz. It is hard to get noticed by Apple sales staff, who struggle to decide who is a tourist and who is an actual shopper wanting to buy something. For sighted people, all the Apple employees are wearing bright red shirts.I eventually was connected to a saleswoman. Once I purchased my phone, she brought me to a second floor area where she introduced me to a trainer named Russell. To my amazement, Russell helped me with unboxing the phone for the first time and then provided a 45 minute tutorial on the phone's physical elements, accessibility settings, initial set up, and he showed me how to perform the basic gestures to use the phone. He showed me how to insert a nanno sim card and at one point he attached an audio splitter to the headphone jack and we both listened to voiceover through headphones so I could hear the demonstration and successfully learn the phone's basic gestures while Russell offered iPhone coaching and feedback. He was patient, thorough, and totally knowledgeable about voiceOver for the blind and understanding how helpful it is to our independence. After buying my IPhone and receiving an iPhone tutorial, I then went to a T-Mobile store a couple of blocks away to sign up for service. The monthly unlimited data and texting plan I wanted with 100 minutes of voice for $30 wasn't available in stores, only online. Signing up for service online was useless without a nanno SIM card to run the phone. The store had these, but I needed to buy a plan that they sell. I was now between a useless store and a useless website. What to do? Brian at the T-Mobile store suggested I buy a daily plan and switch it over when I got home. He gave me the address of a website I could visit for the switch. Brian said the money on this plan could be ported to the other plan. Brian installed the nanno SIM into the iPhone and entered the many settings into the device. He was tapping the screen for at least five minutes entering data. Once home, I tried logging onto the website an was completely unsuccessful. I called customer service and learned that new customers are put on ice for two days and have no website access during this time. I told another T-Mobile representative why I wanted to log on so soon: so I can change services to one more affordable. At first, the representative contemplated the silly idea of referring me to a website I could not access to change my account. He then placed me on hold to check into the problem. When he came back, he had switched me to the affordable plan I wanted. I was so relieved and happy. Now that I was switched over, I provided my credit card again to pay the difference between the $10 in daily credit I bought at the store and my new monthly plan. The T-Mobile fiasco ended Saturday morning when I rose to find my paid for service cancelled for lack of payment, which I had paid the night before. Another day and another call to T-Mobile speaking to a representative on the other side of the world. He successfully diagnosed the problem: my account was short $2 from a charge from the daily plan that I never wanted in the first place. In a very graceful gesture, he offered to credit my account for $2 and restore my service to the monthly plan, which took effect a couple of hours later. T-Mobile is quickly getting its act together in supporting the iPhone. The $30 a month plan is super affordable, compared to triple the price for ATT service. A week and a half ago, super-fast 3G service compatible with the iPhone was turned on in Chicago and other major American cities. Every issue in getting my iPhone up and running on the company's network was greeted by staff with innovative can do solutions that enabled me increasingly greater use of my iPhone. Now, I am set up permanently with T-Mobile. After putting my life savings into a brokerage account for a juicy Apple gift card, I was able to ultimately afford the phone of my dreams by

Make sure you are using the correct number from the gift card. You have to peel off a sticker or scratch off a scratch off box to reveal the correct code on iTunes card. Today I will have my very savvy niece try it for me. I might give it a shot on the iPhone but all i managed to do yesterday was accidentally remove my credit card info. At least that was a good way to test whether the gift card was working since it would not let me buy an app. Sherrie -Original Message- From: Chris H Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2012 12:10 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.commailto:viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Redeeming gift cards with the new iTunes Sorry, I didn't realize you have to select the features tab in order to view these. He forgot to mention that you have to first select the Featured tab which is the one on the far left. I find it easiest that once I select it, I make sure I touch it again, then swipe left and 2 or 3 swipes should put you on the redeem button. I haven't redeemed a Gift Card in iTunes 11 yet, the last time I bought two $50 Gift Cards when Safeway was selling them for $40 each and I Redeemed it right there in the store since I asked the customer service clerk to read the code to me and then once I redeemed the cards and the balance showed on my account I just asked him to throw them out. If iTunes said it was an invalid code you must have mistyped it. Have a happy new year, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Using an iOS Device for processing credit card tranasactions
Thanks, looking back through the archives I have noticed that the Square card reader plugs into the headphone jack. If a 3.5 MM splitter from radio shack is used can a earbud be plugged in as well; or will plugging in the reader then turning on a BT headset suffice? From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, November 30, 2012 2:20 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Using an iOS Device for processing credit card tranasactions Hi Frank, There has been some discussion on this and you may want to search the archives for terms like Go Payment, Square Reader or card processing etc. I personally have not have had any reason to try any of these services, but I do remember that those who have posted on here all said that the fact that these card readers all seem to plug into the headphone jack is a problem since it shuts up Voiceover. You may be able to get around it with a bluetooth headset, but this also doesn't seem to be just easy, either. I am not sure if I have the names correct, I am pretty sure Go Payment and Square are providers of such readers, but you can always google credit card processing with an iPhone and get the exact spelling of the major players and then search the archives for those. The question I have is does Microsoft Word for iPad work on iPad Minis as well? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2014 2:48 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Differences between Microsoft Word for Ipad and Microsoft Office Mobile was RE: Does Microsoft Office Run on the iPhone and iPod? There has been some confusion which I may have contributed to, but also if folks would be careful to use real app names, things would not get quite as confused. The app I've been talking about is Microsoft Office Mobile which is free and is free for home use. It works with OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) and only Office 2007 and above documents that have the x at the end of the file extension, like .docx or xlsx, etc. Microsoft also released Microsoft Word for iPad which requires an Office 365 subscription if you want to edit documents. It is only for the iPad. Apparently, it will also edit older .doc files. I do not have an iPad or an Office 365 account so am hoping that Microsoft will make the Microsoft Office Mobile app which works on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, fully accessible with VoiceOver. My sighted wife can edit documents quite easily with it and VoiceOver will read the documents, but you can't edit them with VoiceOver. RE: Bluetooth keyboards not working
Tried this a few times with no success. Below is the text of the response I got from Apple: Hello, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We continue to investigate the issue, but in the meantime, there is a potential workaround you may want to try: When you find that the keyboard is not entering any characters, try using Control+Option+Right then Left arrow to move away from the field and then back again. If that does not work, please do this two times in a row (Control+Option+Right then Left arrow+Right then Left arrow). While this will not necessarily keep the keyboard from entering this state again, it should clear the state each time. If you continue to have issues, please let us know. RE: Airplay: I Just Ain't Getting It!
Not sure about te future of the format but Airplay is in the control center. Frank -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of SSEric Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2014 11:07 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Airplay: I Just Ain't Getting It! First, a general question. Is Airplay no longer an option in the Music app? I don't see it on my iPhone 5 or Touch running the latest IOS.. I am sure it used to be there, but I don't play music all that often and never had cause for Airplay, so I am not sure when it disappeared. Is there something you must do to activate it in the Music player? Specifically, I bought a Philips Airplay enabled speaker. It requires that you acquire your network. I then bring up Wifi on my phone or Touch and can see the new option for Philips. This is fine, except that if I switch from my home network to this new Philips one, which is attached to my home network, I can then no longer stream via wifi. Is this just the way it is? By the way, with regard to my first question about Airplay not showing in the music player, the way I was able to play music was to first select the Philips from Airplay in the MLB At Bat app. I then switched to Music and played music through the speaker. I am trying to decide whether or not to keep this speaker and if I want to mess with Airplay at all. If my finding is true that you do have to join the speaker's network connection, thus not able to stream via your home network, then that doesn't seem so viable, since most of what I do listen to is streamed. Also, as I said, I don't really do music listening all that often, so it might not be worth it, and I will just stick with Bluetooth options. Incidentally, as I shopped Amazon for Airplay speakers, I saw that a whole lot of them showed as discontinued by various manufacturers. It makes me wonder about the future of the format. Thanks for any education on how Airplay does or does not work. Eric -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. I would like to use the mic when I am using headphones and if I am using headphones they would be taking up the lightning plug, thus I would need one on the adapter with the headphone jack. Kind of like what you might use if you were charging the phone wile using the headphone jack. I hope this makes more sense. By the way, thanks much for the link. I'll have a look at it right away. If you say you can buy it through Apple, I hate to sound like an idiot but where do I go to do this? That is about as cheap as I have seen or heard of. And I wouldn’t mind grabbing one. Yes,I do have a Bluetooth headphone that I like but I also have a wired pair that I use a lot and now I would like to know what is the best adapter to buy so that I can use them? Just the straight adapter would be fine for now. Eventually, I would like one that I could possibly plug my Zoom mike in to, but for now just being able to use these head phones would be great. Any help is appreciated because I have heard that cheap is not necessarily better. Thanks much. Kay Malmquist kay.malmqu...@gmail.com<mailto:kay.malmqu...@gmail.com> "Where focus goes, energy flows."
