John Lilly in Loop
-Original Message- From: David Bitterman [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org 313@hyperreal.org Date: Tuesday, January 09, 2001 5:45 PM Subject: [313] RE: Tone shifting, phantom sound, etc... John Lilly performed an experiment with a tape loop of the word cogitate being played to a room full of psychologists for about 15 minutes. They were instructed to record the various word changes every time the tape changed. None of them knew that the tape was a static loop. About 90 percent of the group came back with a list of at least ten changes. This was an official psychological experiment using other psychologists as the lab rats. On that note, try to track down John Lilly in Loop on the first April Records comp. Excellent track, excellent comp. And... good for toneshifting. How elementary for the mind to need to split a repetitive non-melody into the opposition of two. Moving from the static one of nothing to the newly created two of something. I was always curious about this. I think much of the melodic projection is also based on the timbrality, tuning, and harmonics of the instruments (drum sounds, synths, etc..) being used. Therefore the melodies and shifts seem intimately related to the actuality of the piece itself and therefore more inherent, as in exisiting, yet not quite manifest. I think you characterized this all really well in terms of splittling one into many. This is what a bunch of French dudes believe is the beginning of consciousness. An artificial schizm that differentiates objects in the world from the undifferentiated whole. Perhaps it's a silly idea to try and pack a lifetime of a philospoher's thought into one sentence, but you get the idea. But there are so many factors involved in breaking this down and understanding the phenomenon (like anything else). Why do we get tired of the loop after a while? After how much time do we get bored, and does this vary with different songs, and do different people respond differently? I think this is what Darw_n is after. But I think these are unanswerables. To *precisely* analyse any of this in the way that cognitive scientists do, is impossible because you're trying to measure vaguely defined emotions in unquantifiable increments. To discuss Toneshifting here any more than we already have (twice) goes way beyond the scope of this list. Let's all listen to Dutch ambience and hallucinate!!! :) Tristan == Ten mixes, one album, various tracks, pics and info here: http://phonopsia.tripod.com/ [EMAIL PROTECTED] FrogboyMCI on AOL IM Deserve's Got Nothing to Do With it. -Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven _ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] TOKOMAK online mp3s
At Peter's suggestion I went back and relistened to TOKOMAK 2. Here is my extended review. Track 1: Bronson's Gruv: great bassline and nice synth stab (again sounds a little too much like a preset to me). the thing that ruins this track is all the other percussion (hihats and 909 like claps) chugs like an off kilter horse and ruins any gruv you might have been enjoying at the outset of the track. Filtering to a subtle comeback after the breakdown the track makes all the same mistakes again. Trying to hard to compete with something like Aril Brykha 'Groove La Chord' and coming up short. Track 2: The Rhythm Culture: Horrible claps from the start (reminiscent of some old progressive house records), bad samples (my girlfriend says it sounds like a horrible garbled dog) and even worse the progressive old Terry Lee Brown Jr accented crash cymbals overused to bad effect. Again transparent filtering (enough to make one seasick). I can't say enough bad things about this track. Track 3: Expanding Possibilities: Possibly the best track on TOKOMAK 002. Very old Detroit, with the exception of the annoying use of the the volume fade on the synth. The percussion is by far the grooviest of the three (girlfriend bobs her head up and down to this one). TOO MUCH FILTERING shows the lack of production maturity and ideas. While the breakdowns are short and well nicer than any others, the lack of movement throughout the percussion makes this track just as stale as the others. Re: [313] RE: Tone shifting, phantom sound, etc...
Also, out of repetition the mind has a need to create variance. This was an official psychological experiment using other psychologists as the lab rats. this kind of finding seems consistent with various other sensory deprivation experiment results and parallels a lot of the visual illusion research, which suggests that toneshifting is most likely tied in with perceptual processing. vision tends to get a lot more attention in this kind of area, but i'm sure there's a substantive body of academic writing out there on this sort of thing if you really feel like digging for it. personally, i don't see how styles of music that generate these kind of auditory effects hold any more artistic merit than others, but that's just me. Quick comment on the DE9 reference. I agree completely that Rich's use of the effects on the tracks brings to light through expression a kind of transitional state between two things (w/ reference to the use of delay). This transitional state is quite possibly the result of years of listening to mixes. Mixes falling off, exposing the difference between the two records, and then realigning. But the over use of this effect CAN become overly manifest, overly static, and a little boring. No diss to Rich. Trust me, he's one of my utmost favorite DJs of all time. But I remember hearing him a couple of times when the delays seemed to be used so often, and at such an obvious transitional point in the break down and mixing in of the next record that it gave me a not so faint reminder of a time where parties were a night of snare roll cresendo after snare roll cresendo, this being the primary exciting agent of the peaks in tracks. You know how boring this got. Build up, build up, build up, then nothingor a raised cut-off or resonance. Of course those with skill, such as Rich, know that a build up is nothing if there's nothing to build up to! Anyways, just my two cents! Have fun with it. - i think this is characteristic of richie's recent djing, though. his mixmag cd from 1995 is very narrative and contains a lot more textural variety than the mills/user tracks he canes for the first 2/3rds of DE9 (although the latter mix has been growing on me recently.) glyn

Re: [313] RE: Tone shifting, phantom sound, etc...
this kind of finding seems consistent with various other sensory deprivation experiment results and parallels a lot of the visual illusion research, which suggests that toneshifting is most likely tied in with perceptual processing. Yes it is... The less actual info you are dealt, the more info your mind creates on its own... vision tends to get a lot more attention in this kind of area, but i'm sure there's a substantive body of academic writing out there on this sort of thing if you really feel like digging for it. There's some work out there. Most deals with how the mind reacts to info and doesn't really try to use this research in any broad way, such as impact and application, etc... What I am working on, and indeed what the basis of my toneshift theory, is how these effects in perception play in todays *social* market; what is the social impact and application of such music and effects. I suggest that a big draw to things like techno, emotive drugs, and raves, is partly due to the lack of imagination going on in the modern world. Instead of playing with sticks and rocks, cops and robbers, or being generally intellectual and imaginative, the general populous is simply being totally entertained, and being told what to see and feel (video games, high info movies for instance) - the classic lazy brain dead couch potato. And I suggest that this state of constaint and total entertainment and info-spooning is un-natural for the mind and emotional state (that comment is not to be considered a ludite remark BTW). Since techno and other lyricless dance music is very limited in its definition and message, it becomes very appealing because it allows the average mind to imagine and project (toneshift) in a world where there is little too imagine, the people seem to be getting over loaded with interpretation and input. Same thing with raves and its culture. I personally feel that imagination and creativity is a nessessity to life (at least a happy life), and since less and less is left to the imagination in the world, things like techno and raves become more and more appealling on vast scales and will continue to do so... toneshifting serves as a creative imaginitive outlet to the average person in an automated world personally, i don't see how styles of music that generate these kind of auditory effects hold any more artistic merit than others, but that's just me. I hope I never came across like that!! I find merit in everything, even good old britney spears... i think this is characteristic of richie's recent djing, though. his mixmag cd from 1995 is very narrative and contains a lot more textural variety than the mills/user tracks he canes for the first 2/3rds of DE9 (although the latter mix has been growing on me recently.) here here!!! His mixmag was very defined. It is only in the past two years say where he has seemingly pulled all his definition away, except for fleeting moments, like the classic nitzer ebb drop BTW, I have been developing a web-site to be opened this spring to deal with these theories and thoughts, along with setting up a open forum dedicated to these discussions... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... search for djdarwin on napster www.sphereproductions.com www.mannequinodd.com www.mp3.com/darw_n

Re: [313] RE: Tone shifting, (not to beat a dead horse)
this i guess would be more on the technical side...rather than philosophical. surely someone can answer. ... in light of this discussion i was just playing around with doubles of a couple of daniel bell tracks and noticed that when the pitches were on perfectly the bass lines cut completely out, then on one track even the mids almost cut out completely and what was left was some cut up trebles. now i could understand (due to some physics knowledge) that if the doubles were done with inverse wave patterns they could cancel, but these are exact copies... hmm... just a fun little question. maybe someone can explain it... =) later danny

I don't know exactly how he get those tones but I've been told he uses several open real tape decks looped together and he has them modified so he can move the tape with his hand etc. I guess kinda how a dj can manipulate the record I hope this wasn't to OT? scotto http://www.mp3.com/i_majin

Old UR album
Ok, so i posted this request a while ago, but had little response, but there must be someone out there that know something about this obscure Underground Resistance album I have. Its called 'Hype Stuff (You gotta Move to)' And features Rob Hood and Yolanda Reynolds doing the vocals for some of the tracks. Its on Vibe records and I figure it must have come out before UR records started as it has a very Chicagoish Hip Housey feel to much of it. One of the tracks 'You got to show me' is probably the most well known cut on it (or at least the only track that I've ever heard out anywhere). When was this album made? How rare is it? Is there anyone else out there with a copy at all?? If so what do you think? It's certainly pretty interesting listening in the context of URs catalogue. Peace Stewart

Wait untill you hear his new album on Tresor and the Disko Fm ep, coming out soon. Although it's not his best work it still remains worth the buy. I'm currently working out the interview I did with Blake in Amsterdam. The Dutch version has already been sent to Bassic Groove and should be published beginning of February. I'm working it out in English now for Overload and Underground Committee (site). Wait untill you read what Blake has to say on his once best friend Derrick May. It ain't all good, let me tell you that! Re: [313] Old UR album
I don't think its a UR sublabel. In fact I think the album came out before UR records even started. Most of the tunes sound kinda too unsophisticated to have been done after any of the UR records releases. A couple of the tracks are hard Chicago Acid style tracks and then there are cuts with Naughty Nikki, M.C LO and Sleepy D doing vocals. Don't know who they are though. Rob Hood and R.Gibson designed the cover art and the whole album is credited to Jeff Mills and Mike Banks. At a guess I would put it at 1989. Re: [313] theo parrish track id
I confess to not knowing what that track is, though I might set aside a bit of time over the weekend to attempting a pretty comprehensive Theo at DEMF tracklisting. does anyone know the track that Theo Parrish plays during his DEMF set at about 51:54 with lyrics along the lines of... I work, need a job, no Monday(money??) times are hard On a related note, I'm sat listening to Turn The Lights Down Low (Sound Signature 11) which is of Theo's usual high quality and in his own unique style. There are two mixes, the This One Mix is one of those off beat bassline tracks that you find near impossible to hear actually on the beat - despite an almighty distorted bass drum. The main mix, Full Mix poses no such problems. Another essential Parrish release that I'm looking forward to playing at home on a decent stereo. Jonny.
phasing, was beating a dead horse...
the records slowly drift out of sequence, and then you get cancellation... in light of this discussion i was just playing around with doubles of a couple of daniel bell tracks and noticed that when the pitches were on perfectly the bass lines cut completely out, then on one track even the mids almost cut out completely and what was left was some cut up trebles. now i could understand (due to some physics knowledge) that if the doubles were done with inverse wave patterns they could cancel, but these are exact copies... hmm... just a fun little question. maybe someone can explain it... =) later danny - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have not been following this closely so don't shoot me if this has been ask before. Hi. I've been trying to figure out what this song is for some time. I have two mixes that it's on, both I got off Napster. The first is Marco Carola Live at Karma, the track that begins 18:41 into the mix. It is also on Marco Bailey's Connect Yourself mix, 28:05 into it. It's the song with three notes (well, two notes actually...one played twice). If anybody has these mixes and knows what song this is, let me know privately. This was for documentary on sampling, they gave a couple of artists (Freq nasty, Speedy J and Orlando Voorn) four samples and asked them to make a track them. Re: [313] RE: Tone shifting, phantom sound, etc...
What I am working on, and indeed what the basis of my toneshift theory, is how these effects in perception play in todays *social* market; what is the social impact and application of such music and effects. I love it when people use words that end with -tion or with -ism to sound very smart. Personally? Toneshifting sounds like something that belongs in a room full of people sitting on pillows wearing robes and rubbing their power crystals to align all that is right in the world. uh huh. Yeah, after listening to things for a while, you hear different things. And yeah, when timbres are overlapped, they produce different timbres (judas priest being sued for murder anyone). Big deal. As Frued said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. From what i've been reading from all of you, you make a dj out to be some kind of shaman, some kind of sonic magician that *hears* these absent sounds, and is intentionally creating them. And all along, when they spun two records together, i heard two records being spun together (no matter how great). I suggest that a big draw to things like techno, emotive drugs, and raves, is partly due to the lack of imagination going on in the modern world. you have the *what* right, but not the *why* right here. Kids ARE into techno, drugs, and raves because of the lack of something in the modern world, but i don't know if its imagination. Drug use lends itself more to a lack of emotions as opposed to imagination. Always has, always will. I mean, you're talkin about white suburbanite kids who grew up on cable tv, the internet, Mtv, and their parents never being around. Their lack of affection IS what draws this type of kid to the 'rave' scene. As always (and should always be assumed), there are exceptions to this rule. And I suggest that this state of constaint and total entertainment and info-spooning is un-natural for the mind and emotional state ah, again, i feel you're way off base. the human state of mind IS geared toward info-spooning. People not only want to be told what to think, they NEED to be told what to think. Its important to them. Its what ties them all together and gives them unitity. This is something that has gone on since the begining of man, and will never change. average people are called that for a reason: they're average. Since techno and other lyricless dance music is very limited in its definition and message, it becomes very appealing because it allows the average mind to imagine and project (toneshift) in a world where there is little too imagine, the people seem to be getting over loaded with interpretation and input. Interesting. I think you need to follow your own words about overloaded with interpretation and input. Again, this is just coming down to my humble opinion, but the reason that dance music is popular in our culture IS because of its lack of definition, but i don't think it has anything to do with toneshifting. I think its because there IS no message, they don't (as in average people) have to project a definition. In effect, when they dance, they don't have to think for once in their lives. Its just dancing. things like techno and raves become more and more appealling on vast scales and will continue to do so... is this why *raves* are on the decline right now? Do we have some utopian period of creativity and imagination coming up that is causing the *scene* worldwide to slowly decline? toneshifting serves as a creative imaginitive outlet to the average person in an automated world Toneshifting serves as a pretty word to make you feel like you invented something. I'm not trying to dog on you, but all i see on this is a bunch of stuff that sounds 'nice,' and sounds ,'smart,' but really is just putting too much thought into something that is really just a cigar. Hey, its nice to see someone have theories, i have my own whack ones, but for a style of music that was built around pressing buttons on a step sequencer, you're giving too much credit out. I hope I never came across like that!! I find merit in everything, even good old britney spears... That's good. But practically everyone on this list DOES come off that way. I was gonna ask you about your trance tracks on your page (because i myself thought of you as an elitist), but this former comment of your cleared it up. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
techno is dumb childs play
Hey, its nice to see someone have theories, i have my own whack ones, but for a style of music that was built around pressing buttons on a step sequencer, you're giving too much credit out. I have a *serious* problem with this statement... and it is clear that either I miscommunicated something, or you didn't read the first post. I'm not theorizing about music, I've never even taken a music theory class, nor learned an instrument... toneshifting is a mundane psychological effect that is mostly understood in professional fields with *possible* large social implications... it's the implications that I am concerned with... Re: [313] phasing, explanation
Ok this is easy Step 1. Draw 2 sine waves with their intial points about half an inch (1 cm for those of us not in the US). Step 2. Draw 10 vertical lines through the waves, these will represent the points in time we will then average also draw a horizontal line through where each wave starts (the baseline). Step 3. Now at each point in time (node), measure the distance from the baseline to that point in the wave, for each wave. Add the two measurements together and draw a point in at the added height. Step 4. Once all ten points are done try and draw as smooth a curve through each point as possible. Result: This is the resultant sound wave. While the initial sine waves are nice and rounded you will find that as you map more and more nodes that the two out of sequence waves tend to form a more square like wave. Notes on Square waves: When a square wave is produced the audible sound is not continuous (ie you hear a shortened sound that does not represent the whole wave.) This is due to the nature of sound (there must be a change in amplitude of the wave in order for it to be audible, therefore in square waves where the wave remains at a constant amplitude for a extended time period there is no sound.) This is why in audio when large wave forms (ie. bass) become square they audibly click and are shorter then the resultant in sequence waves. Small wave forms (ie hihats) however have tiny square waves and cut out only for nanoseconds at most, this is why the high end will sound like flanging, as the rate of change of the distance between the competing waves changes, the tonal quality of the high end will change as well. I hope that helps (I did three years worth of physics, mostly sound and electric) todd darw_n wrote: hehe, the answer is right below your question!! ;) The slight drift out of sequence causes wave cancellation... Now, someone on here can perhaps provide a more technical explanation... I have not been following this closely so don't shoot me if this has been ask before. If you doubledeck two identical copies and you get it just perfect, then it seems like there is a wave going through the track. Does anybody have an idea why this occurs? Thanks, J the records slowly drift out of sequence, and then you get cancellation... - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] techno is dumb childs play
Hey, its nice to see someone have theories, i have my own whack ones, but for a style of music that was built around pressing buttons on a step sequencer, you're giving too much credit out. I have a *serious* problem with this statement... what problem would that be? Did i not say something true? I'm not theorizing about music, I've never even taken a music theory class, nor learned an instrument... Ok, i'm sorry. I must be wrong. Monolake/Toronto
I was talking with Thomas Jirku last night...looks like Monolake and Kit Clayton will play the B-Side (above Fez Batik) on Feb. 10. They've apparently been developing a new Mac program together, and there's a good chance the performance will be collaborative at some stage of the night. Here's hoping! Re: [313] techno is dumb childs play
techno is dumb childs play... oh oh ;) hi jayson to me that's a bit of a bold, ignorant statement. music of any sort is a representive of someone's personal expression and creativity. some people just put more time and effort into music making and some people also have much more experience and education in music, theory and production giving them the ability to produce much higher quality music. i didn't read any of the tone shifting threads so i may not really know what i'm arguing about but to say techno is dumb child's play insults most of the producers of the music i've grown to love. peace to all... no more from me about this djr From: Jayson B. Re: [313] TOKOMAK online mp3s
Okay... I've held myself from pressing the reply key throughout the course of this thread, but I have to stick up for my admiration of the Tokomak 002 record. I have only the 002 record, and Have yet to get a listen from the 001 album, but the track produced by Don Williams on 002 is absolutely blinding to me! Its on Side one track one (I beleive), and it has a violin that plays a super catchy line. I would have to disagree on the comment that the volume fading is annoying (if this is the track you were talking about), and that the filtered drum kit was immature (?I don't see how music can be immature...?) and lacked production ideas. I do know, however, that when I heard this in the record store on my overseas trip, it was a must buy from moment # 1. Everytime I play this track out, everyone screams and shouts at the breakdown, especially when the half beats start and biuld into the solo violin once more... I think its easy to pick tracks apart, (especially when you see some competition in it - i.e. if you produce tracks also), and that we should all (of course) have our opinions, but that we should not totally rip into musical works. I think that way of thinking is far to close-minded, and that the understanding that all tastes of music are different and everyone has their own, is a much better way to present it. Sorry I wasted so much time explaining a topic that many will find as off topic, but I really love that song. One of my favorites. Dennis Donohue From: Todd Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@Hyperreal.Org 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] TOKOMAK online mp3s Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 22:55:59 -0800 At Peter's suggestion I went back and relistened to TOKOMAK 2. Re: [313] RE: Recycled Loops
It definitely is not.. Recycled loops (the first one) on Primevil is done by Umek Uros and Kanzyani (first name is too difficult to remember). the second instance that I know about is on a different label and has a much housier feel : includes the lyrics: rock the disco tech this one is only Umek (I beleive) Unless there are other ones floating around, those would disclude Richard Harvey AKA user AKA Dean Cole. Re: [313] derrick may wildtime remixes
They are, I'd imagine, his remixes of Dee Lite's Wild Time. I don't know the bootleg to be sure of it, but I have the original issue of it. Also, I don't know when it's is from, but I'd put it at around 1990/1991. I'll check when I get home, though.
