Jeff Lorber...the Missing Link?
Cool to hear someone else is into JL, a true muso's muso...though the further back you go with his releases, the better they get. In the late 70s in the 80s he did some great, soulful stuff, full of intricate horn arrangements life-affirming, machine-driven jazz funk. I've often thought he might perhaps be an unrecognized influence on Detroit techno, never having received the kind of notice reserved for Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Herbie Hancock, YMO, etc., or to a lesser extent, George Duke. His keyboard chops are phenomenal on these early recordings, yet there's also a melodic, melancholic vibe, an unspoken yearning present that lifts much of the material to a new, proto-techno level; that same moody feel you can hear, for instance, in Carl Craig's Domina remix or Kenny Larkin's masterful Without. Something about those chords... A lot of it may be down to the equipment--trying to squeeze new sounds emotions out of circuitry that's only just up to the task. On his 1984 'Step by Step' album, Lorber lists: Yamaha DX1, KX1, DX7, Oberheim OB8, Xpander, DSX, Emulator II, Cooper Midi Interface Disk drive, Wave 2,3 Waveterm, Rockman, Linndrum, Simmons, SDS7, SDS8, Minimoog. The sounds syncopated rhythms (aided throughout by tricky panning techniques), remind me not only of May's classic material, but also of some of Hakan Lidbo's fresh 'Tech Couture' tracks. And Step by Step, the title track, with Audrey Wheeler on lead vocals --powered by a relentless, chunky synth bassline--finds a strong echo in Recloose's wickedly deep'n'funky remix of Herbert's Leave Me Now, as well. Anyway, the best Jeff Lorber Fusion releases are pretty rare now, his rather bland-sounding recent output mostly lacks that techno-soul longing for the ineffable. If you ever have a chance, though, take a decent listen (on a good system), to Pacific Coast Highway off 'Step'...4'42 seconds of pristine musical bliss that (re)maps mind body into the sweetest of configurations. I got the !K7 version last week, which is under license from Soundslike... Has got the original, the Recloose mix (which is dope, of course), a Richard Devine mix and a track called Back To The Start... Another excellent Herbert track that appeared on the Plug Research compilation Voices in my Lunchbox. Respect JasonB

As for Wednesdays, it *was* Steve/Horsepower's night, but he's in Europe for awhile. I'm not sure when he's coming back and if he'll continue the night, but other local djs are still playing there while he's gone. Thursdays - DBIT In Formation and Ian Hind are residents. Ian's another Windsorite like myself and is an amazing techno dj/producer, but one of those people that is pretty lowkey at the same time. He has just started a new label - http://www.whitelabel.ca . The concept of the label is that none of the producers are revealed on the releases...sort of a if you like it then buy it, you shouldn't care who wrote it attitude. Saturdays - DJ Seoul and DJ Watts from Bang Tech 12 are residents. From: kenneth taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] What's up at Foran's? Re: [313] Moby vs. The Belleville 3
Yeah, even though I don't think to highly of Moby I don't think I could pass on New Order, the Orb, the Roots, Carl Cox, and Outkast. I remember New Order as one of the groups that turned me onto techno way back when they toured with Echo the Bunnymen and Gene Loves Jezebel. I didn't like them before but seeing and hearing them live blew my mind. I'm very curious to see how they are going to fit everyone in Midway Stadium[for the Minneapolis show] (that's where they have the bands play at the State Fair... stuff like the Oakridge Boys and the Dixie Chicks). The grounds of the stadium are a stock car race track. H. MTV2... My reason for putting together AREA:ONE is that there is a lot of music in the world that I love that does not always get the appropriate exposure - Moby That's interesting... most of these acts get loads of exposure! Apparently a lot of it will be very raw and non-electronic (which is good!), but Paul Oakenfeld and The Chemical Bors. are also listed as collaborators. I'll be interested to hear the results. It's cool that the tour is happening, and Ford really is expanding their influence. There is a weekly of deep music as my friend Tobey puts it in D.C. now that's sponsored by Ford Focus. It would seem they're interested in supporting even small endeavors, b/c this is at a very small club. I also think it's pretty cool they're billed as The Innovators. Re: [313] on topic
http://www.hyperreal.org/music/lists/313/ at the very bottom there is a brief excerpt on conduct I thought there was more before... maybe I have the wrong page? This has been brought up so many times, and the most common response to the question (of - what is _on_ topic) is _usually_ answered like this The list revolves around Detroit related techno. Anything that can be associated to Detroit techno (and this is where the different definitions come in) is on topic. Usually this is in regards to listening to music, as a few months ago a gear list was re-created to funnel that activity that was seen as off-topic to another list. That list is called 313techknow, is at yahoogroups.com, and is moderated by Todd Gys! (cheers Mate!) There are always different interperatations of this and I will most deffinitely get flamed from this... Flame on! Wraith313 wrote: What kind of subjects are actually defined as on topic for this group? My first impression is that Techno talk and anything that has to do with techno is on topic. Is this inaccurate? My opinion: 'Anything that has to do with techno' is too broad. IMO, 313 is specifically about Detroit and Detroit-related techno and house, not about software, gear, cars, drugs, etc. That's all stuff that might be relevant to techno, but there are other lists that are much better suited for those topics. If you want to read/know/ask about those things, subscribe to those lists, or find a webpage with the answer to your question (www.google.com will usually find it). As for the techno 'talk', the talk unfortunately tends to outweigh the techno by a mile or two. IMO there's too many people having essentially one-to-one conversations on the list, so keep those friggin' useless oneliners where they belong: in private email puh-lease... (no matter how tempting it is with a permanent net connection and nothing better to do). Either that, or make sure that your post is worth reading for the other 800-odd subscribers to this list. [313] Jeff Lorber --- E2-E4
It's so cool to hear someone talk about Jeff Lorber, he is among my favorites. I do a song in my live set that contains a JL break and it freaks the room. This past Saturday I played at the Motor, and the JL break song was the highlight of my set. I use to play guitar in a band called Jazzhead and spin JL between sets. His musical influence to me is right up there with Weather Report, Return to Forever, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jaco, etc.(this is two messages in one) I think that E2-E4 was a huge influence on early Detroit Techno. Being a guitarist and an electronic producer from Detroit, I feel a certian connection to Manuel Gottsing(I don't think I spelled that right). About a month ago a friend sat me down to listen to E2-E4, and it blew my mind. While I was listening to it, I thought it was an old Detroit track I had never heard before, but it was actually this rock guitar player from Germany. I think this record came out in the early eighties. john From: Charles Prince [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Rhythm Droid [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Jeff Lorber...the Missing Link? Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 18:57:32 -0400 Cool to hear someone else is into JL, a true muso's muso...though the further back you go with his releases, the better they get. If you ever have a chance, though, take a decent listen (on a good system), to Pacific Coast Highway off 'Step'...4'42 seconds of pristine musical bliss that (re)maps mind body into the sweetest of configurations. hi folks! this is a longshot but i'm REALLY hurtin' for this one. i saw teddy douglas from the basement boys twice in the last two nights here in sf. what an awesome dj, and a super friendly guy to boot. unfortunately i was unable to get a proper id on a absolutely slammin' record that he played on both nights. here is what i know: the title is something like i wanna be you. the record has a black sleeve with red lettering, and a black label with red lettering. one side of the sleeve said ... records. its a big tune, based around a strong male vocal and a stab pattern. the only other description that i can give is that the vocal is sort of a stuttered shout that hits at the same beats as the stab. it also sounds pretty old. -eli

So, I was rummaging around through my box of cassettes and I found an old mix tape of mine (last mix I did in 1993 before calling it quits). I want to know if anyone knows what the name of this track is and who it's by. http://www.angelfire.com/music3/logic7mix/track1.mp3
