RE: [313] Theo Parrish
Here's what Bent Crayon has to say about these cd's : PARRISH, THEO: Theo Live @ The Temple CD (SOUND DIGNATURE). A series of mix CDs from Theo Parrish. These are CDRs, in jewel cases with no packaging, no track listings or further information. Produced in very small numbers and only briefly available. A pefect view of the crude immediacy of Theo's DJ-ing style, mixing Fingers-esque Chicago classics with disco, soul, acid and new wave tangents. The next best thing to having Mr. Parrish sitting in your tub ruining all of your records. 16.99 PARRISH, THEO: Eclectic Asthetic Pt I CD (SOUND SIGNATURE). Live Theo Parrish DJ Set, recorded somewhere at sometime, very raw and very live. Parrish eschews what most consider essentials these days in his live sets (supreme fidelity, mathematical beatmatching and programming), opting instead for a style that is more open and intuitive; it seems he is more concerned with the truly vital information encoded on a record, the ineffable elements that allow him to create atmosphere, and embroil the listener/partygoer in a narrative, a myth. As on his own productions, Parrish uses the basic tools of the mixer, the faders and filters to devastating effect; and one of Parrish's great talents as a mixer is a style whose seeming crudity belies it's subtlety. Volume levels go up and down seemingly at random, or the the low end might disappear completely for almost too long, leaving only a squashed transistor radio sound, only to come crashing back at just when you think you can't take it anymore. On this disc, his selection runs the gamut from 70's funk and Afrobeat, deep house and soul, and more than one juncture a tune so brazen that it's shocking, but ultimately it works; it always takes you somewhere, sometimes to places you weren't even aware of. -- Billy Kiely 16.99 PARRISH, THEO: Eclectic Asthetic Pt II CD (SOUND SIGNATURE). Part 2 of the pair, picking up where the first volume of this DJ set leaves off, and Parrish takes us a bit deeper into the night with a slightly more set tempo groove, and from the sound of this he's burning the house down. More killer funk and house classics, and I don't want to ruin many surprises but when Parrish starts teasing us with bits of Stevie Wonder's 'Boogie on Reggae Woman', fading pieces into the mix, and then drops it in full effect, I know that at least I grinned and said to myself 'Oh boy do I love records!'; now who doesn't like being able to say that? The whole set closes with Parrish's stellarremix of Recloose's 'I Can't Take It' -- so it winds down nicely and then it's time to go home. Truly an education. -- Billy Kiely 16.99 PARRISH, THEO: Theo Live In Japan CD (SOUND SIGNATURE). 16.99 Jurri -Original Message- From: kurt(bway.net) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: dinsdag 1 mei 2001 21:32 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Theo Parrish was kind of astonished to find not one but four new (?) Interesting Insight
Mildly offtopic, and I apologize in advance http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/ Documentary on the feedback loop between what 's cool and what marketers use to be down with teens. Conclusion is that Detroit's own ICP is ripe for being co-opted. KISS2 anyone? I'm thankful that true Detroit techno escaped by virtue of its happening early enough, and under the radar. What I wonder though: Detroit has a tradition of musical innovation, which might be subject to greater attention in the near future. What other scenes are still virgin and raging? -- There4IM

faceless techno b******s
So recently I was mulling over the way UR and Maurizio/Basic Channel refuse to be photographed and rarely ever give interviews, and how this facelessness projects to music consumers and how it adds to the general air of mystique surrounding the artist. Can anyone point to other bands or musicians who have employed this tactic, whether they be from the realms of techno and/or dance music or any other genres? And does anyone have any points to make on the effect of such a policy? As a starter for ten, did you know that David Soul (in his pre-Starsky Hutch days) used to eke out a living as a singer songwriter called The Masked Man? He would take to the stage in a mask and cloak because he said he wanted people to concentrate on the music, although he admits he soon became better-known for the gimmick rather than his songs. - Tom

Gigolo and Arnie - the showdown
Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but it's news to me. Remember the post a while ago about how Arnold Schwarzenegger was taking legal action to stop DJ Hell using his image as the logo for International DeeJay Gigolos? I rang Gigolo at the time and they flatly denied it. Well, it seems they aren't denying it now: go to the news section of www.gigolo-records.de for a statement, and also see how they have replaced the Arnie photo with one of Sid Vicious - who, let's face it, is rather less likely to sue! Arnie doesn't seem to have anything to say on the matter on his own site, though: www.schwarzenegger.com Cheers, - Tom

I'll open the can of worms! Perhaps, and just perhaps, some people realize that there is/has been a graphic revolution especially in America. Many people now desire a picture, photograph, music video etcto associate with an artist. Perhaps, and I make direct reference to Mr. Banks, he saying---who gives a flyin fluck what the h*ll I look like, if the music is tight then ___(fill in the blank). Ultimately, it all points, and YES this is just my .005 cents worth of an opinion, back to the fact that many of us are just about the image. And does anyone have any points to make on the effect of such a policy? It causes a subtle change in the way people are acustomed to things, it goes against the grains of this graphic revolution, it serves as a basis for change. The mask issue deserves no comment. Re: [313] Interesting Insight
I caught this re-run of Frontline last night also. Watching the show, it was hard not to think of the Ford marketing campaign with regard to Techno. There were many parallels between what marketing firms do with regard to selling to teens and how Ford is marketing the Focus. It would be interesting to see the results of the focus (no pun intended) groups Ford conducted with people in their late teens and early 20s to determine what is 'cool.' Seemingly, they discovered the techno/electronic music/rave/dance scene. They have a great marketing plan with sponsoring the DEMF and Moby tour. Considering the type of people who attend these types of events along with other 'rave' type events are mostly white, upper-class kids in their late teens and early 20s who can afford a Focus. A Focus is after all, the lowest class of car Ford makes. The best thing Ford can do is make it appealing to those who can afford it. Marketers are the best sociologists. Cheers. Conclusion is that Detroit's own ICP is ripe for being co-opted. KISS2 anyone? I'm thankful that true Detroit techno escaped by virtue of its happening early enough, and under the radar. They have a great marketing plan with sponsoring the DEMF and Moby tour. Definitely better than those awful Focus commercials shot in front of the State Theater (?), with a scary-makeup'ed, middle-aged pitchwoman interpreting all the cool things that kids are saying about the car... One of the kids says slammin' tunes 24/7, then she turns to the camera and says quality stereo. Makes me retch much more than most car commercials. .john.

A couple of weeks ago en route to Toronto I parked my car at the satellite Parking lot called ParkEx and got on the shuttle bus the next guy on asked if my equipment was camera equipment. Turns out it was David Fanning the executive producer of Nightline. We had a nice chat on the way to the terminals and he asked me what I thought about that specific episode. RE: [313] faceless techno b******s
I always thought this faceless musicians thing was a reaction to consumer society as a whole - as a matter of fact, if you look at Drexciya or Mike Banks, they do their best to propose an escape from today's society, whether it is under the sea or on Mars... and usually, the music played by these faceless musicians is in some way faceless too - they use retro, 80's sounds that are faceless too in the sense that everybody can associate them with tons of things, they never sound new or different straight away - maybe it's even clearer with people like Dopplereffekt or Adult, where the lyrics are always tongue-in-cheek, and many times commentaries aobut our society (I have dispassionate furniture in mind). A lot of stars you can see on TV these days are there just to be seen, to continue to exist in the public's mind just by existing in its eyes ; Daft Punk et al seem to achieve the same goal by _not_ being seen - their absence is more visible than their presence would be. As to other references in different realms : the Residents have been mentioned already ; I seem to remember Autechre only authorize photos if they're distorted ? David Bowie is the exact contrary - up to a recent point, he was so lost behind his public identities he could have been wearing a robot mask ; but this faceless scheme obviously does not fit very well with rock (where the point, after all, is to be a star and have your face on the walls). Another thing comes to mind : some tribes have a legend saying that taking a photo of someone is stealing that person's soul... Gwendal -Original Message- From: Jongsma, K.J. [313] Plaid
Went to check out Plaid last night here in NYC at Plant. They did a live thing with laptops and then threw down some wax. Some pretty nice chewns, mate. Also, the guys from Prefuse73 were there doing their thing... I believe that was them throwing down the hip-hop records? I don't know? I heard they were going to play along with MFDoom for his record release party, and I thought it was them; but then we left early cause that place with a little squeezed. Whoever they were, they were dropping the dope wax. Mad classics by Kool G. Rap, Nice n' Smooth, De La (Potholes In My Lawn), and even Just-ice. Got ME movin'... respect! Nice to see some brothas up in the piece as well... I don't know about other places, but NYC is whiteboy, yuppie central these days man! It gets annoying... BTW, that Prefuse record that came out on Warp, Estrocaro, is f**kin' awesome! Brilliant hip-hop techno fusion. Alot going in NY this week (finally). On Friday Mike Agent X Clark is DJing at Centro-fly for Kimyon and his crew. Thursday Ricardo Villalobos is DJing for one of Ulyssees' parties (sorry, don't have the info on that in front of me), and Saturday my posse is doing our weekly thing at Pyramid once again. This week we got the Decal Records crew from Dublin (they remixed Two Lone Swordsmen recently), and Ricardo Villalobos waxing the decks. I will forward that info to the list. I hope some of you who are in NY this wk/end will come check it. Peace, J - This message was sent via the Ulsternet webmail system. http://www.ulster.net

Re: [313] Interesting Insight
I saw the mid-end of this last night. It's been one of the better things I've seen on tv lately. In the end I thought 'electronic music is next for the bastardizing whip'. I now understand why MTV USA has left it alone for the most part and chooses to remain publically ignorant.Because it doesn't appeal to the mook. (The part about buying programming completely fit in with the 'cheapo' reputation MTV has amongst production houses.) From someone who's into the repeat cycles of society, culture and the younger gens etc. I found the show really interesting and thought provoking. I think the most disturbing image was the room full of 11 year olds and early teens taking a break at the 'model search' to pump and grind on one another. I also found it interesting that the ICP crowd thinks sticking up the middle finger is the most interesting way to 'fight the man'. I wondered why these people channel that energy into anger instead of creativity. Why it was their minds went that way instead of others. I'll stop there...like i said...thought provoking. Basically, what it boils down to is...unless we break the cycle-we're our own worst enemy. *Re the part about ford: Ford is trying to label or brand Detroit techno. They want to own this. They want to reach a point where 'techno=cool=fun=Ford' and one owes itself to the other. I owe this eye opener to Miss G. The only way they'll own it is if its allowed. I'm not saying ban the DEMF or Ford's money. But rather, use them as the rich aunt. Sure, throw the money around all you want-but it doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to praise you or acknowledge you in my life liner notes. on a lighter note if you're in Ann Arbor, MI get on down to Stucci's and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream-it's free ice cream for lunch day.:) tc d sorry so long. __ Do You Yahoo!? What a wicked post... Sure, throw the money around all you want-but it doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to praise you or acknowledge you in my life liner notes. Totally, I've mentioned this before ages ago... There're a lot of people involved in this scene at roots level. If there're people at this level then it can never become commercial and it will never be possible to stick it in it's own special rack in HMV or Tower... Detroit techno is just to broad. Example... There is still good underground hip hop about despite the fact that it's all in the charts (stateside and in Europe) and has sprung in and out of fashion a few times over the past 20 years. The reason for this is that it's easy to produce and there're lots of kids at roots level that can just pick up a mike and MC without even considering getting a big record deal... That's when the best music is made... In fact, I spoke to a mate about this the other day. We came to the conclusion that most legendary bands and artists only ever produce one really great album, the first one... Then they start making money and there's no enthusiasm to create good new music anymore... Not true for all bands tho obviously. This links with the recent posts about secertive producers... Lots of producers have released stuff on UR but are never credited and they don't care. That's one of the reasons the label is so good and so true to detroit techno... What do you think? Actually, DeepChord will be coming out in the June issue of Vogue. They are doing cross promotion with Karl Lagerfeld to promote his new berlin dub summer line, expect minimal, repetitive patterns, a lot of grays and blacks, and fuzzy, amorphous lines. They will also be promoting the new DC designer jalapeno cheese spread. All dairy products used are produced on the deepchord dairy ranch, and all cows were personally milked by Wurtel, Techniker and IMAX. You bought the records for their rich, deep flavor, and smooth textures, now you can buy their cheese spread for exactly the same reason. DC is also working with T.C electronics to develop a 2 rack-space white noise hiss-ifier. It is going to utilize a physically-modeled dsp algorithm based on the early 30's german telefunken radio receiver and the odd power surges and line hum that come from the outdated electrical grid that powers their studio in a remote dairy farm in the Wisconsin wilderness. Expect a the Hiss-ifier as a VST effects plug-in in the 4th quarter. Deep Chord and TC electronics will have a 2 page spread with trashy broads in bikini's in the November issues of Keyboard and Future-Music. take care, Mike the underground is dead, anonymity is for people who cannot be bothered From: Saul Goode [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] faceless techno b**s Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 12:47:49 -0400 THE RESIDENTS. At this point I don't see the point of Daft Punk wearing the robot masks... there are countless photos of them sans masks. Plus, if I see one more magazine with those robot masks I'm gunna rip it up. It's gotten tired and old really fast. I first thought they were cool but then it seemed like evry magazine was using the same damn photo. Funny, that's kind of how I think of their new release too. Neat at first but then full of gimmicks and sounds the same after repeated visits. Ooh, that kinda got off topic didn't it. Back to the hidden identity thing... I can appreciate not revealing your personal info (photo included). It allows an artist to branch out into areas that could be considered wrong by your fans if your identity was known. It adds to the mystique of the creator as well... Kraftwerk using dummies made in their likeness. In a live performance it adds a bit of a spectacle element. It also confuses the media machine... Maybe mass media has realized that watering down the music isn't the answer to popularity. who knows. I now understand why MTV USA has left it alone for the most part and chooses to remain publically ignorant. back to said chemical prodigy fiasco. Both groups' videos on mtv did HORRIBLE (except for smack my bitch up, which was ironically pulled and was one of my favorite videos of all time). I also found it interesting that the ICP crowd thinks sticking up the middle finger is the most interesting way to 'fight the man'. its their most interesting way to make money off of fighting the man. that's why. Its like Rage against the machine, FUCK SOCIETY, FUCK THE GOVERNMENT, FUCK THE ESTABLISHMENT, but please buy our records and T shirts and 40 dollar concert tickets. Its their business. Another example of the pure genius of the Riaa: they can take anything and turn it into profit, even the hate for themselves. Basically, what it boils down to is...unless we break the cycle-we're our own worst enemy. but let me ask you this: WHY should we break the cycle? This cycle has been a part of the human society machine since the very begining of our existence, except it used to be called Culture and not Mass Media. The Masses Control themselves; the importance of belonging is so important they will supercede their own impulses to do what a group is doing. The way i see it, there's 3 groups in Society (not an original thought, but i think it needs to be reiterated here). Group one are those who follow Mass Media as much as possible. They're the biggest. there's group 2 who goes against mass media's influence, and in turn, are just as much a bunch of followers and such as group one. then there's group 3 who just doesn't give a fuck. They don't listen to said music style Abecause it makes them look smart and they don't ignore music style B because they'll look dumb. They just follow their own impulses (not completely: they still have been influenced by culture somehow) ok, i'll shut up. Shiat, i wrote that as if it was never said before. I owe this eye opener to Miss G. miss G. The only way they'll own it is if its allowed. I'm not saying ban the DEMF or Ford's money. But rather, use them as the rich aunt. Sure, throw the money around all you want-but it doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to praise you or acknowledge you in my life liner notes. well said. There's nothing wrong with corporate sponsorship, there IS something wrong with corporations wanting to control it through their sponsorship. on a lighter note if you're in Ann Arbor, MI get on down to Stucci's and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream-it's free ice cream for lunch day.:) so not fair. I moved from ypsi/ann arbor a year ago. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

If you consider Prodigy a flop, I'm not sure what your standards for success are. They were the top selling band in the US for 1998 (yes, even bigger than the Spice Girls, who were at their prime then). anyone see the Tire commercial on TV with timo maas's production crew's song dooms night? Maybe mass media has realized that watering down the music isn't the answer to popularity. who knows. Well the Timo Maas remix of Doom's Night is absolutely massive in Europe, I'd be surprised if nobody used it. It's just sad that so much good music is used in commercials in the US. If you consider Prodigy a flop, I'm not sure what your standards for success are. Its not that *I* consider prodigy a flop, its that the big boys thought they were. even though that album sold a lot, the Record Labels still didn't stick the groups into the 1-album-a-yea-until-people-are-sick-of-you routine that they do with other groups. I guess i attributed that to they thought they made all the money they could on it. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Well, another part of the problem was probably that the Prodigy had enough clout from all their #1 singles in the UK that they didn't take shit from the US record companies. The Tool DVD box set has a video with all of the band members walking around naked with Parental Advisory placards around their privates and it does show their faces. Definitely pick it up if you're into Tool. - Tom - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == The information in this Internet e-mail is confidential, may be legally privileged and is intended solely for the addressee. Actually I had Africans in mind - and I did not know Mike Banks had Indian blood (that's what you are referring to, right ?) Hence the Native American references on the Red Planet releases, perhaps?

conspiracy theory.......
Please to note that not only is Ford sniffing about to position and brand/align themselves to this culture but they've joined hands with the MIGHTY, mighty SFXa huge entertainment monopoly owning well over 1700 radio stations and close to that number in television/cable interests (dunno the specifics on tellie/cable) and are currently buying up interests in multiple promotion/marketing/labels etc. throughout America and Europe pumpin' our sound. Moreover, they've been soliciting supposed business proposals from a myriad of marketers and purveyors of the funkto get ideas...with no monies being broken off to compensate...just empty promises. This is also happenin' across Amercia currently. Funksters BEWARE!! As the rock beast lies ailing.they've set their sights on us. Moby/et.al's tour which the detroit techno triumvirate so recently sold out (rather cheaply) have played into their hands in what i think is the most unbecoming way. While each and every one of us has to do what we think is right, this move rather rubs me the wrong way by legitimizing The Man's right to our shit. Dunno what will come of this, but from Moby on to Ritual/Amir, Vince Bannon, J. Walter Thompson, Ford Motor Co. and SFX--all stand to garner huge positioning/branding opportunities...thereby diverting monies away from ALL OF US to be the kings of dance music. Moreover, the DEMF is at the center of it all. While Carl Craig/Planet E/Tim Price is slaving away contacting and contracting all the talent--Ritual Productions is the official talent buyer for the DEMF...What? Last year, I received official offers from them and that was it. This year haven't heard an official peeep from 'the official/contracted talent buyer' for the festival and I'm booking 2 headlining acts and one other artist. Ritual has a three year agreement with Ms. Marvin, I believe and I have to ask why. Could it beSatan? Future King and Queen of Detroit Techno? Plegh! Not going to happen using my back as a steppingstone for their clamor to the top of the pile. Good fortune is exactly that. But out and out greed is what I'm sensing / smelling. HEADZ UP! While those of us producing and owning music will do alright...the rest of us will definetly feel this movement I think rather piercingly. Not here to criticize anyone for any decisions they've made...but the family/culture/movement and sound were not, I think, part of the equation when the decision was rendered. Moreover, as the corporatization of dance is occurring WE MUST stick/stand together and not fall apart--else all we've heretofore fought for will be for naught. Other peeps thoughts please? RE: [313] Interesting Insight
Aphex Twin doing a Pirelli ad? Does anyone remember that? It was really good. It had Michael Johnson (I think) sprinting across a large flat surface with a thin layer of water on it, with one of the most mental tracks from the early Caustic Windows release slamming to the rhythm of his strides. I heard Richard got paid a vast amount of money for that, and he didn't even write it for the ad.
