[313] Lenny Burden on Direct Beat Records
(a fwd from Lenny Burden of 430west/Direct Beat) Hello Mike, Thanks for the forward from the 313. Please forward the following to the list: We have Direct Beat on hiatus at the moment. We kind of felt that we lost direction (no pun intended) with the label, and lost the real purpose why we started the thing in the first place. Back when we started, there were great producers, making some great music, (much of it 'electro'), that no label in the world was paying attention to. It did quite fit on 430 West (we tried it with 4w-190 Aux 88 "Bass Magnetic"), but it needed to be heard. There was no outlet for these people who made the music, and we also got tired of hearing the "Detroit doesn't play techno" line. We think we accomplished our goals in re-exposing this sound, since the whole dance world is now laying claim to it. We kick started some careers along the way, so we have some things to feel good about. Just think, we couldn't give away our first 'electro' record on DB (outside of Detroit), Aux 88 'Technology' is now refered to as a classic. Who would thought it? We have refocused our attention on our music, 'Octave One', and on 430 West as a label. For a while there, we were we were too focused on the 'business' and not the 'music'. We will probably do somethings with DB in the future (never say never), but we have no plans to repress the back catalog or release any new records right now. Thanks to everyone who supported the label. -Lenny Burden _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Absolutely surprising, but what a great choice it is! I got to see him perform @ SXSW last March, and it was worth every penny of the $90 I paid to get me and two of my friends in. I would probably make the trip to Detroit just to see him if he were playing anywhere for free, let alone the DEMF. When he played in Austin, he DJ'd (or dubbed, I guess) for about an hour then performed with Lee Scratch Perry live. It was really cool to watch him play keyboards and do live dubs at once. Both parts of the show were brilliant. I can't wait! Re: [313] 2,500 for both at demf
Amen. I've been wondering whether to say this or not, but sometimes I get the feeling that there are a few out there who would like to see the festival fail at Carol Marvin's expense... or see Carol Marvin fail at the festival's expense. I'm not one to play politics. I plan to attend regardless of who's calling the shots, I'd think most people would want to do the same if they want this thing to survive. I know there's a lot of lingering resent regarding Carl Craig's sudden dismissal last year, but regardless of who's running the show, I'd like the see the DEMF continue to grow and see it return in years to come. I realize that there is a right way and a wrong way to accomplish this. I'm not as familiar with as many of the performers as some of you hardcore 313'ers are, but that's not to say I won't enjoy getting introduced to their sounds for the first time as I did last year (and for a couple of artists, the second time). :) That being said, I am disappointed, like many of you, that certain performers have turned down invitation to play this year for whatever reasons... I'm hoping the afterparties will make up for that. From: "Jayson B." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> feedback please this seems high, its more if you want to play music at your both. go Carol! same price as it was last year, and *if* i'm correct the same price as it was the year before. The first year, a half-size booth was $1250 and a full size was $2000 (approx). I *think* it was $1500 and $3000 last year. This year, it's $2500 for a HALF-size and FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS for a full size. So in two years the price has doubled. This probably plays a big part in why a lot of Detroit-based vendors (such as Record Time) will not have a booth this year. And while yes, we should be going to the festival for the music, I'd prefer to be surrounded by booths from local business who are actually involved in the scene, rather than Pepsi's Chevrolet Go-Cart FunHouse tent. Couldn't agree more with this post. I for one will be at the festival. I knew that even before the line up was announced. This will be my third year making the trip from NYC and I plan to enjoy the festival and support some Detroit businesses while I'm there. I'm sure as in years past I will meet plenty of cool people and have a great time. I personally can't criticize the line up because the festival is FREE. Considering what you sometimes pay for stuff here in the city, free is a rare thing. Honestly I'm excited to see Mad Professor, that's a bit of a surprise. I'm sure there will be plenty of great afterparties as well. It's funny how I hear a lot mentioned about the spirit of that first festival. I can attribute it to the fact that I had no idea what to expect(as no one else did), which made it really exciting. I didn't even know the line up till I got there. I can even count last years hail storm as probably the most memorable moment (and proof Carol is not god). It is impossible to please everyone and had they scheduled every one of my favorite artists, I think I would get bored. As I did last year, I'll break out the highlighter and pick out the folks in the shcedule playing I'm not familar or don't hear often. Re: [313] scenes vs The Scene
Well, my phrase is slightly out of context there. I wasn't saying I wanted this to only be for those who already knew what was up. Rather, my point is, I'd much rather see locals, people from the community, checking out the music and learning about something they never existed. A diverse crowd--something that a crowd made of mostly ravers is not. It seems to me that if the event leans towards the rave thing it will drive people away who are turned off by that atmosphere or aura. How many people in the community are going to look at this year's poster and want to go? Honestly I don't care how many ravers go I just would like for that to be simply one demagraphic and not the predominating one. I also feel that they ought to have some of the deeper/jazzier R+B and some high quality hiphop (I think the hiphop in the last 2 years went over well personally), as these will draw out more local people without compromising the vision and quality. ...dave Original Message Follows From: Tim Maughan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: JL Jones <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: Re: [313] scenes vs The Scene Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 11:26:19 +0100 on 16/4/02 11:25 am, JL Jones at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > In general, I thought that there was a preponderence of ravers at the last > festival who didn't necessarily know what they had even come to see. is that really a bad thing? if one of them went away with a new appreciation of techno, isn't it worth it? i now techno gets accused of elitiism, but do we really want to exclude people? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey there Mr. Jones, In my mind, anyone who's never been should still go. I think if you don't know what you missed the first year, these following years won't have the tinge of longing. Plus you'll get to put faces with names for fellow 313ers who would like to meet you in person. :) > Seems like this attitude kinda puts a damper on people > exploring their curiosity with regards to the acts at this > event as well... It's almost like you're saying: > "If you have no clue about who's performing, you shouldn't go"- > even if you do have an interest in the music I don't feel that way, but I was quite dissapointed by the different vibe the second year. It was impossible not to be, and I think this is what Cyborg K was originally asking about. The first year was unbelievably exciting - nearly a religious experience for some. No one there knew if it would go off. In the days leading up to the event, there was nearly as much controversy as this year and last year. No one could anticipate how many people would actually show up, or what kind of feeling the festival would have. When I finally arrived, after months of discussing it, it surpassed everyone's expectations. The crowd was so unbelievably diverse. It was like a cross-section of Detroit and its surrounding areas, comingling with travellers from all over the world, together as one, curious or die-hard. In fact, it's the curiosity that felt missing from the second one in a lot of ways. So much of the crowd was Detroit locals, some older families, some people who had seen Derrick may at the MI but couldn't believe he was still DJing, and that something like this could ever happen in Detroit. You only need to review the groovetech footage from the first day of the festival at the CPOP stage, from Minx into Theo Parrish to see what happened. The first festival was diverse in every respect, from ethnicity to age. Children and grandparents all dancing to Theo Parrish's "I Can Take It", etc. After about 1/2 an hour of Theo's magic the place was transformed and that feeling never went away. The second year I arrived with fears of corporate pollution and anger about Carl Craig's dismissal, but I tried to make the best and enjoy myself at what was a phenomenal line-up. However, it never felt the same and it took some severe expectation-adjustment to acclimate to what the festival had changed into. There were phenomenal moments when you could remember what it was like the year before, but there wasn't the pure joy the first festival set free. There were also logistical differences. Some of the stages were simply too crowded to get into, and getting between stages was extrememly hard. There were a lot more people. What did it for me and many others the second year was the after parties. Here, you could reconnect with the underground - you could experience the same feeling that was missing the first year. The Sound Signature party last year was as good as any moment from the first, and there were literally four other parties I would have ran, not walked to. Anyone there will likely tell you this. I would travel to Detroit this year just to attend that party, not even knowing details on other parties to come - but there will surely be too many to chose from. Go for the parties, don't expect a miracle from the crowd at the festival like the first year, and perhaps be happilly surprised by the whole thing. Anyone curious can read my full review of the 2nd year here: http://phonopsia.tripod.com/globetrot.htm Tristan --- http://www.mp313.com <- Music http://www.metrotechno.net <- DC techno + more http://www.metatrackstudios.com <- DC DJ/Production studios http://phonopsia.tripod.com <- Hub [EMAIL PROTECTED] <- email - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] DEMF/US Visa requirements
It's a shame there's so much bad feeling about the DEMF this year becuase I've been wanting to attend the last few and this year I've actually got it together.. Looking at the line-up there's a few names missing, notably the Planet E peeps and that's a big let down.. But, my girlfriend wants to go, I've got a place to stay 15 mins walk from Hart Plaza with an old buddy and there are plenty of names on that line-up I have never had the chance to hear.. so, we're going.. :) Can anyone with knowlage of US visa requirements please mail me off list with any helpful info/advice. I don't want to get stuck at the airport! 1 aussie passport holder, 1 english, no arrests (yet) For UK-313'ers remember Saturday May 18th (the weekend before the DEMF) is our meet-up in London.. would be a good time to arrange to meet at the DEMF for anyone else going over.. cheers, Nic -- -- Visit our Internet site at http://www.reuters.com Any views expressed in this message are those of the individual sender, except where the sender specifically states them to be the views of Reuters Ltd. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And if I recall well all the pictures on the site are from the -by now more than legendary - first edition of the DEMF. Why is that? Forgot to pay last year's photographer??? And damn right about the total lack of respect for some of the true people in Detroit. John From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Drexciya and the DEMF Date: Mon, 15 Apr 2002 23:19:20 +0200 Hey man its a shame because If PCM continue to disrespect guys like these and lose all support of the Detroit techno community, then the rest of the world is soon gonna follow. People have way too much respect for guys like UR and Derrick to continue supporting an event that continues to flex its commercial muscle over the scene and music they have built. When you think it was partly the vision of guys like Derrick and Carl that gave birth to the DEMF to begin with, only to then publicly diss Carl and now show an utter lack of respect to the professionalism of many other Detroit artists, right down to the tiniest detail of having Derrick on the website homepage after he had voiced his distance from the whole project. Maybe I've got it all wrong, hey what do I really know. What I would like to know though is were the selection comittee aware that PCM planned to list thier selection without having first booked or even contacted the artists involved? Re: [313] scenes vs The Scene
- Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Actually you touched on something that disturbed me greatly, the difference in crowds between Demf 1 & 2. It was the sight of such a diverse crowd after the first Demf, all enjoying themselves and digging on the music, that made it really seem like a landmark to me. That diversity seemed to be lost at the second Demf, and I'm curious as to why this was the case? Anyone have any thoughts on this? i only wish i could have attended the first; i'm from seattle and didn't find out until it was financially impossible. but to me the second was very diverse; there was a lot of 'rave', but also a lot of grandma and kid and i-live-here-and-what-is-this-thing-going-on and "i flew out from denmark"... i don't know what the local view on demf is at this point and that's part of the reason i subbed to 313 again after a long absence.. i am wondering, though, if local resentment about the way the politics went down contributed in some way to a less diverse second festival? In general, I thought that there was a preponderence of ravers at the last festival who didn't necessarily know what they had even come to see. it's possible, but almost everyone i talked to last year was not from detroit. i met people from japan, england, amsterdam, california, florida, new york, toronto, etc.. barely anyone i had a conversation with was local and the local people i did talk to weren't ravers and had come just because they were curious about the "crazy party".. i am annoyed by confused ravers when they show up just to get high and lay all over each other, but i didn't see any of that at the demf. it might have gone on in the hotel rooms, but at the festival itself, everyone seemed really into it. as far as i am concerned, people who have no clue what the music is but love it and are freaking out about how good it is are just fine by me. ;) best way to learn is to fall in love... kim "mere language is profanity. i'd rather hum or have my soul tattooed on my tongue." - saul williams http://www.nwtekno.org & http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/nw & http://www.pulpfiction.com/rave/groovinkim . - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That diversity seemed to be lost at the second Demf, and I'm curious as to why this was the case? Anyone have any thoughts on this? that's pretty easy (imo) ..last year people raved about how great it was and so it attracted a large element of scenesters..now every idiot from missouri is showing up In general, I thought that there was a preponderence of ravers at the last festival who didn't necessarily know what they had even come to see. yes..the first year we had people coming up to us telling us it was great to see people in UR gear, the second it was asking who they were The worst thing that could happen is that curious locals won't attend because they percieve it to simply be some kind of "rave" thing. On the other hand, thank God for the afterparties which more and more look like they will become the real focus. I will be very sad if I know longer see some of the great artists out with their kids in strollers... I don't think that we should lose site of the fact that the detroit artists spent decades being undervalued and now their name is being institutionalized in this city, and are you really that suprised that it is being co-opted? -k re: the post about certain types of music attracting teenagers it's called teenage angst, pick up a sisters of mercy cd sometime ;) mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
