(313) RE: Vestax or Technics

2003-07-29 Thread David Powers
Sakari,

Ah, as I suspected, there is a somewhat of a difference in tempo in our
sets. My sets would rarely be so slow, for one thing because I play
techno and UR electro the upper limit is more like 150, regularly, and I
rarely would go below probably 125 usually, although I don't own a BPM
counter. Well, I might mix in a slower track, but I probably won't
beatmatch. Interestingly, it sounds like you are letting the tempo
fluctuations of electro dissuade you from programming it so much! Also,
it almost seems like you are able to do this easier because you don't
buy techno records that exceed 130 bpm, does this limit your buying
choices at all? I pretty much play 3 tempos: house, tech-house, and
techno to electro. In each range there tends to be a record or two that
really belongs in the category but needs to be pitched up a bit to fit
in the right place in the mix in terms of texture and energy.
Especially in the tech-house some of the more techno tracks are at 0 to
-2, while the housier tracks may go into +3 to +6 range. While I don't
always like having to pitch up, I don't have any way to really make the
track selection I want happen without doing this. Your main upper
limit, 130 is very slow for modern techno-ish type tracks, even ones
with a Detroit feel. I can't imagine having that as my upper BPM limit
really!

Curious if anyone else has any thoughts on this?

~Dave

hi david,

I'll ignore spw's essay on trendiness, that has nothing to do with
this,

he's quite annoying, isn't he :)

but I'd mention that your rule would make it very difficult to mix in
older classic tracks in a slightly uptempo set.

well, most of the classics are in range of 115-125 for house and
123-130+ for techno. i don't see any trouble here.. of course you need
to occasionally break the rule, but i don't do it with EVERY mix in the
set (or every other mix either) :) (and you can always just change, and

not beat mix at all)

it's a kinda shame that many good house records are nowadays somewhere
around 128-130bpm range, even the MAW have gone up those tempoes. what i

like in house music is the a bit lazy drums and enough space for the
bassline (ie not too fast tempo) so it keeps the groove, for me this
seems to work best at around 120-125 bpm.

couple of bizarre sounding things done by booty DJs with classic
 techno tracks pitched at +45.

it's when you hear bucketheads - the bomb played at 45 +16 mixed with
some cheesy Music TV-advertised GABBER you start to cry.

This doesn't seem like a great rule for all situations, why do you
find it
so important to stick to this?

just my personal opinion. i like the music as it was made. the dj is
supposed to play the records, he's given +-8 scale to allow
beatmatching. just too many records from my collection sound bad pitched

too much. be it house, hip-hop, soul, techno.. maybe it's just me but
thats how i like things.

records all played at 0). Maybe 2/3 of a set are in the range you
give. What styles do you play and do you think your rule applies to
 all of them?

i play mostly house techno, sometimes starting the set from 110bpm and

building my way up to 130 (with time).. i can play some rap/hip-hop,
soul, r'n'b (mostly b-sides of house-records from early 90's though,
since most of the good stuff was remixes from those), some more eclectic

stuff like the orb, bjork, theo parrish, fsol, idm'ish stuff to rob hood

to UR to harder old techno, not forgetting early nineties rave
breakbeat (the good stuff below 140bpm :) i can even throw a set of
early nineties euro-dance for kicks (i used to dj some kids school
discos). but yes my rule applies like say 90% of the time. there's
always the record you cannot remember that's 118bpm or 129bpm.. :P
oh i forgot the electro, which makes the biggest problem keeping the
rule since it goes all the range from 120 to 150bpm and i'm not buying
much of that stuff. generally i just drop the tracks in that part of the

set they fit considering their tempo. generally, it's quite easy.

RE: (313) Vestax or Technics

2003-07-29 Thread Matthew MacQueen
this coming from someone who plays mostly '80s music
on his radio show. I know your jsut trying to educate
people but that's so typical why not more
minmal techno and early '90s techno?

mostly 80's? Really? I think you mean SOME, but definitely the
minority. The 80's is decade, not a genre of music man! And I consider
myself a student, not a teacher. When you play every single week, for
years, you have to mix it up. I play probably 3-10 records from the
early 90s in a 60 minute show. But whatever.. I vary it constantly on
purpose.

You couldn't have known this, but at my station there are also other
shows adjacent to mine dedicated to harder or minimal techno for an
entire show, so it's not something in my broadcast area I feel needs
greater representation, (esp. when I find a lot of new minimal techno
boring/lacking). You would have enjoyed our Bleep techno marathon but
that would bore me to tears to play it every single week, techno has
changed and some of it (gasp) even for the better. And I thought *I*
was nostalgic for old techno... yikes

BTW - I do appreciate ALL feedback on my show, both negative and
positive. Electronic music to me is too large to stay micro-genre or
period focused. It's just a different philosophy than yours,
obviously. Staying up late to hear Mojo playing freeform as a teen
inspired me to connect the dots all over the genres/periods... but most
DJs don't. A lot of people (maybe even you) can't handle it, they want
to keep putting things in boxes that are more comfortable for what
they're used to.

Consider making a website and posting your own mixes consistently, it's
a challenge. You don't need a radio station to have a radio show. Turn
that criticism into some ideas and positive energy... fill the need
yourself with what you feel is missing. Many people do this instead of
complaining about what others freely offer. Bring joy to others with
your excellence in nothing but early 90's techno selections.

I disagree, there's always room for improvement especially
if you have a formula that works. Look at all the Detroit
labels trying to sound like the '80s with electro.

To me it doesn't sound 80s, that's where we differ. There are
influences, sure, but it's not trying to sound 80's.

And making such comments about pitch is not considering
 this is the 313 list?

I think the comment about what pitch is one person's opinion, not some
universal mandate. I myself think it's silly, as to do a lot of the
mixes I attempt, things have to be pitched way up or down to even pull
it off since the tempos are all over the place.

I'm just telling it like I see it.

As am I. HIGH FIVE!!

songs exactly are people refering to when they are comparing similarities to
him and either Prince or Marvin Gaye?

I think people generally mention Prince or Marvin Gaye in the context of KDJ
sampling them, rather than actually sounding like them himself...

It's good but, like my mother said (she's so on it), I don't know why they

(313) Derrick May @ 10 Days Off

2003-07-29 Thread Maarten Baute

Hi friends,

now that it is still fresh in my memory, I will try to review the closing
night from 10 days off (with my last efforts - so don´t mind the typo´s).
Well.. let me say first that I only checked the main room, I actually only
wanna talk about Jack De Marseille and Derrick May.

2h - 4h: Jack De Marseille :

Man man man. is this guy boring. Loop techno some boring electro... no
sample in 2 hours time.. All synth work, quite progressive. Very boring, and
too hard. I was actually getting p*ssed of by this guy, so what I hoped was
that at 4 am Derrick Would come up, push Jack away and say this is how you
do sh*t and then take two copies of strings of life and double the
beginning part up (the strings). But this was not the case...
It was even worse than that: Derrick gave Jack a warm hug (the crowd
cheered). I thought Derrick would have tought Oh my god, I hope I never met
Juan, look what happened because of me, all that boring loop techno. But
no...

4h - 7h: Derrick May :
---

When Derrick came up, it was my first moment of joy from the evening, he
opend up with son dos from los hermanos and then played dj gregory -
attend, wich got me moving the first time of the whole evening. I
actually was screaming! Great track.

But then the nightmare began. He played boring clubtrack after the other...
it was uninspiring.. nothing special.. it was actually just the same style
as jack de marseille did before. I couldn´t believe my ears... It was the
worst Derrick May set I heard in my whole life. I mean... how long can you
dance to a loop?

I left after one hour of Derrick May, no second to early.

A big big dissapointment..

He has the records, he has the skills, why torture us with loop techno
(of the really boring kind), if he can make the most wonderfull mixes. Why?
Easy money?
Start the discussion please.

Another 'going out disaster'. I actually never had a good techno night out,
never! Probably going to the wrong places. Where is Theo or Shake when you
need them?!

Cheers,
Maarten

You should have seen him at the Movement afterparty, that was great. You
just had to see who was dancing to appreciate that. Everyone has good and
bad gigs.
Sometimes I see my favourite DJs in Sydney and they're never as good as
Melbourne and it's made me realise the effect locale can have.
I hope hugging people doesn't mean you do or don't validate their music
otherwise we're all going to have to retract a lifetime of hugs to lovely
people who have terrible records at home. ;)

Subject: (313) Derrick May @ 10 Days Off

-- 3rd try, earlier post don´t seem to get thru --

Hi friends,

now that it is still fresh in my memory, I will try to review the
closing night from 10 days off (with my last efforts - so don´t mind the
typo´s). Well.. let me say first that I only checked the main room, I
actually only wanna talk about Jack De Marseille and Derrick May.

2h - 4h: Jack De Marseille :

Man man man. is this guy boring. Loop techno some boring electro...
no sample in 2 hours time.. All synth work, quite progressive. Very
boring, and too hard. I was actually getting p*ssed of by this guy, so
what I hoped was that at 4 am Derrick Would come up, push Jack away and
say this is how you do sh*t and then take two copies of strings of
life and double the beginning part up (the strings). But this was not
the case... It was even worse than that: Derrick gave Jack a warm hug
(the crowd cheered). I thought Derrick would have tought Oh my god, I
hope I never met Juan, look what happened because of me, all that boring
loop techno. But no...

He played boring clubtrack after the
other... it was uninspiring.. nothing special.. it was actually just the
same style as jack de marseille did before. I couldn´t believe my
ears... It was the worst Derrick May set I heard in my whole life. I
mean... how long can you dance to a loop?

I left after one hour of Derrick May, no second to early.

A big big dissapointment..

He has the records, he has the skills, why torture us with loop techno
(of the really boring kind), if he can make the most wonderfull mixes.
Why? Easy money? Start the discussion please.

Another 'going out disaster'. I actually never had a good techno night
out, never! Probably going to the wrong places. Where is Theo or Shake
when you need them?!

Cheers,
Maarten

Deephousepage - had what looks like two (but I actually think it might

#920 190 - but they both say Walter Gibbons Live @ Yellow, Japan,

Dear Cyclone,

You should have seen him at the Movement afterparty, that was great. You
just had to see who was dancing to appreciate that. Everyone has good and
bad gigs.
Sometimes I see my favourite DJs in Sydney and they're never as good as
Melbourne and it's made me realise the effect locale can have.
I hope hugging people doesn't mean you do or don't validate their music
otherwise we're all going to have to retract a lifetime of hugs to lovely
people who have terrible records at home. ;)

ok, but you just have to understand I was expecting more, hearing a lot of
tapes from his early days. Also his mixes from around ´96 - ´97 I really
like, so I was just wondering why the change in style? You say that
everybody has good and bad gigs, but I think it´s not like he had a bad day
and is messing up his mixing, he actually brought a whole crate with
loop-techno. I wouldn´t say it is a matter of having a good day or not, it
is more a matter of style.

And my comment about the hug was a bit stupid, I know. But it was symbolic
for the kind of music he would play that night.

Have a good day!

But there is a difference between being trendy and having your tastes
develop along side a developing trend (or shall I say continuum) in music
style.

sh*t if we didn't develop and move along we'd all be discussing the latest
tunes sung on Sesame Street.

like I've said before - things change Steve - WAKE UP! it ain't 1991
anymore.

I could have sworn you said at one point you were into minimal techno
because it was future music - well, follow along (and I do mean follow)

As funny and ridiculous as my statement must seem, people would have not
made statements like you must play records at normal tempo back in the
early
to mid '90s when minimal techno was all the rage.
Now even Jeff Mills is mellowed out and mid tempo, trends change and a lot
of times people here reflect the latest trends like the popularity KDJ and
'soulful house' ect..

Ha! Steve I always like how you keep us abreast of the latest trends in
dance music.. as I can't be bothered much myself to worry if I'm
following trends or bucking trends properly or not. I'm too busy

RE: (313) Technics MK5's

2003-07-29 Thread Quest Pond
At a guess, the pots that control the voltages for the pitch might have been
coroded or loose giving a poor connection which could cause inconsistant
voltage and hence speed for the slider. I think replacing the sliders would
include the pots fixing the problem.

ever been to a club and had different decks? it happened
to me and man I think it really does throw you, I mean lets be honest to
have 2 x technics 1 vestax is kinda weird cos you get used to the technics
then
go to the vestax only the touch is different. I know they have the joysticks
but this didn't. also they just don't seem to stay in for long like the
technics do, or is it me?

Plus this joystick thing what exactly does it do? does it help get in it
better (sorry bad english and double meaning there :) - instead of the

a few things that float my boat at the mo:

Andres - Salvador de bahia - mahogani

Four blinding tracks on this. The salvador de bahia side has two mixes
which are both goodslow detroit house with a kind of early techno
synth line (think juan's the chase) to spice it up. i've been annoying
the neighbours with this all weekend...the other side has another house
track that sounds like KDJ/rick wade at their best and then another track
with what sounds like the sample from one of the purposemakers (in the
bush?) running through ittotal class

Natural Aspirations - Sound Signature 18

Theo's latest, go to the 'friendly children' side for a brilliant african
chanting style house cut, along the lines of 'sawala' on ss10 but more
housed upthe track is long but progresses nicely all the way
throughbrill bassline comes in 1/3 the way through can't wait to hear
this on a big system.

other stuff:

busta rhymes - danger/rub - muck

cheeky boot broken/beaty thing with nice analogue bassline and busta doing
his thang on the top...there's a dub too if you don't need the mc.

only child ft amp fiddler

the sound of the summer for me...i banged on about this earlier on this

fix my chic - tapehead

again a bootythree tracks. fix my sink/good timescoulda done this
better (more of the bassline needed), washing machine/riton 'take control'

Dan Curtin Distort.Archive.Desire (downlow)
I haven't bought a Dan Curtin record since his album on Sublime and this is
a real return to form. That frenetic, but funky as you like drum
programming, weird jazzy melodies, gorgeous warm basslines. It's just ace,
ace, ace.

KIM Flores Monstrosi (Tigersushi)
There's a handy Psychic TV track on the flip but it's the KIM track for me.
I'm guessing it's a Krautrock thing - I recognise the Ghormengast studio,
maybe Conny Plank's? - but it wouldn't be out of place on old Plastikman
b-side, stripped down to just a beat, a bassline and eerie reverb.

Well... some of the most memorable dj sets I ever heard are from Derrick
May. I recall his Live @ Fuse ´99 wich is circulating as 2 mp3´s on
soulseek / winmx etc... 2.5 hours of great music, not a bad track in sight.
Every single track is something special and mixed in a way only Derrick can.
Also the set on groovetech wich was recorded at the DEMF in 2000 was great.
Again, all good and very original tracks. Ofcourse, let´s not forget his
Mayday mix from 97, wich is very good and quite funny to listen to.

On deephousepage.com there is a mix of his from his days at the music
institute. And what a mix it was. A selection of the best chicago house and
detroit techno records of that time.

Too bad it turned out differently last night.

Van: ian cheshire [EMAIL PROTECTED]
totally agree, also his set off Groovetech is one of my favs, I love it. I
didn't get to see him with FK at the after party but I know where my money

maybe next time he swings into town or if you can make it to Movement 04
you'll get to hear/see/feel a proper Derrick May mix.

2. Pal Joey - Thong Test - Loop d' Loop Records (actually prefer the B side)
3. Moodymann - Silence in the Secret Garden - Peacefrog

5. Amp Fiddler - Love and War EP - Genuine/PIAS Recordings
6. Rima - This World - Jazzanova-Compost Records

8. Reunion - Strange Attention (Seiji Remix) - Sonar Kollektiv
9. Tres Demented - Tres Demented - Planet E
10. Jay Dee - Unreleased Volume 1 - The Bling 47 Group

Oh and Wire to Wire is very nice. The new Ghostly comp has its moments too.
And I love that Madlib version of Donald Byrd on Blue Note. Haven't heard

(313) Numark or Technics

2003-07-29 Thread Javier Drada
All of you are on this Vestax trip... Vestax are a piece of [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Numark TTX1 that's a whole nother story. Believe me I just bought a pair less
than 4 months ago. It was a tough choice because I was going to wait and get a
pair of Technics SL-1210M5G. I have played on both and find the Numark way
tighter easier to handle and more stable on the pitch. Vestax Tables feel like
toys.

Re: (313) Numark or Technics

2003-07-29 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Give it time Numark's circuitry/wiring has always been total crap in my
experience.
As you said, you bought them less than four months ago - give a year or so
before you make any judgement calls
I've owned a Numark mixer as well has one of my friends and both of them
have shoddy wiring.

My friend has his Numark mixer attached to the front of the table his
turntables are on. One day I was over at his place playing some new vinyl
for him. I bent down to pull a record out of my bag and when I came back up
my head hit the underside of the mixer. The damn thing went dead. All sound
cut out. We stood there looking at each other like what the f*ck? He
proceeded to hit all the kill buttons on and off, bring the volume up all
the way, test the cross-fade, etc. Nothing worked. So he did the only thing
left that there was to do - he slapped the bottom of the mixer with his
hand and - voila! the sound came back on.

My mixer had a problem with noise slowly seeping in so I sent it back to
the company since it was still under warranty. They sent it back eventually
- with all the dials stuck back on wrong, they did fix the punch-out
buttons that broke the first day I had the mixer, and stuck a new piece of
glass on the LED read out where the old one had come off (I had the mixer
for about a year only used in my living room). Well, since the biggest
problem was the noise (imagine white noise slowly coming over your records
until you couldn't really hear the music anymore), everything else was just
icing on the cake. The noise was gone for about a day and a half after I
got it back from the Numark factory repair.
Then it came back.

I'd never buy another Numark product.

I would have waited for the Technics - most people don't notice a slight
waver of pitch when they hear music on a big sound system

Re: (313) Numark or Technics

2003-07-29 Thread Phonopsia
I'd be careful to write off all Numark stuffs. My old Numark, the DM1800MX I
think it was, lasted about 8 years, and was still quite usable, if dirty
sounding when I sold it. The pots got crappy after a while, but nothing
wrong with the circuitry or the wiring that I could tell. I also gigged with
it a fair amount. Traxx said he still uses this mixer at home, and I know
others that got lots of miles out of it. At the time, it was a relatively
high-end mixer, and it wasn't until a few years later that their quality
turned south, as they changed their focus to budget products. As this new
turntable is a high-end device for them in contrast to their utterly
appauling budget units (*ahem* Kent :), I'd bet the quality will be better
(although I wouldn't take the chance myself until I've seen the long-term
reviews - as you said). However, this is not the first glowing review I've
seen of them. I can understand the temptation and wouldn't write them off
based on their sh*tty reputation from the late '90s onwards.

 reviews - as you said).

Poor tristan had to mix on my raggedy-ass setup -- one Denon turntable, one
Gemini, and my Numark with the broken crossfader and transformer switches.

That bitchass Numark mixer has only been gigged with a couple times, it's on
it's second crossfader, and the transformer switches got press about 3 times
before they broke.

As if that's not enough, the EQ sounds like ass too. Best quality is that
it's blue.

Just before tres demented its french kiss remixed by Avril on Fcom. I
like it, its a really good remix that gives a fresh breath to it.
And yea, i love techno loops. When i goes on and on and on!! Thats a
important part of techno..we enjoy loosing control on thoses loops...maybe
its a more 'youth' approach to this music. I like when its more 'mental' or
'melodic' too...
But this is the techno' richness, it knows to be pure dancefloor, freaky
beats, or something with more soulful vibes.
It really depends of ur relation to the music. Some will hate techno
loops, some would say that more melodic techno is crap for grandpas...
Hmm i like both.
