FW: (313) GPO & Acid House Connection
Yes, I would agree with all of you. Jack the Tab was Gen's attempt at jumping on the bandwagon. I did hear acid house DJ's in the UK use Gen saying the word "ACID" off of the inner groove of the Superman 12" "Tune in, Turn on (thee Acid House)" in the summer of '88 though. That was it. Even though I wasn't involved in Jack the Tab it was an influential UK psychedelic record that acknowledged the coming Acid House phenomenon. Weatherall used the same sample from that biker movie on the Primal Scream stuff. Richard James told me once when we first met that he had bought Jack the Tab when it came out and was disappointed that there was no 303 on it. He was like, "Where's the acid ? " Richard was also the only one who spotted the sample of Margaret Thatcher on a cooking TV program. Don't forget Stakker "Humanoid". Great UK Acid track that was out then. And the Baby Ford stuff was good too. Please remember that unless you lived in Chicago in 1986-88 these records were extremely regional. You really couldn't track down this stuff unless you got on a plane and went to the source. I was surprised that when I got to London in the early summer of '88 the best records I heard were from Chicago and Detroit and that I couldn't buy any of the stuff in Boston and NYC and they were extremely hard to get my hands on in London. These days we are spoiled by finding out about stuff via the internet. Back then it could take years to track down fairly current records and it did. I remember sitting in the lounge of Berwick St. studio were the Orb were recording visiting a friend @ the studio when I first saw the video on TV of Inner City doing "Good Life". I was totally impressed. I thought they were from Belgium or something. So stylish and fresh. Couldn't believe they were from Detroit and they weren't known yet outside of Detroit in the US. That changed very quickly. It's a bit like when Donna Summer went from Boston to Germany to work with Moroder, who was from Italy. By the time of "Tekno Acid Beat" the Acid House phenomenon in the UK had to go underground. By the time Wax Trax released this stuff, "Jack the Tab" was really out of date. Those who bought either of them had to be really young or completely out of it. What do you expect in the US ? I did say to Gen @ the time in '88 that we should just get the gear to make real Acid house records back then but he wanted to integrate the band into it still and tour. I already had a 303, 202 and 808 and samplers but they were all in the US, so we continued in this rock/Acid house inspired hybrid band thing. I still believe that we were pretty good at it compared to the likes of others @ that time who claimed to be Acid House bands also, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream and the Shamen. They all had better financed record companies helping them. We had sh*t. But audiences on our tours certainly thought that rock was dead and acid house was it. I always thought of PTV when I was involved as the Acid Rock House band that was playing @ the funeral of Rock and Roll. It was us saying "f*ck you" to the music industry before mp3's. Haven't been paid to pick up a guitar since then. One bit of insight Gen did have was that the DJ and electronic music was the next most interesting wave in music in '88. Too bad he couldn't figure out some way to contribute. I certainly moved on when I met the Plus 8 guys in '90. According to the movie "24 Hour Party People" Tony Wilson invented Acid House and the Happy Mondays were the greatest band in the world with the greatest poet in England. Give me a break. The time I saw them they were the stiffest most drugged out band of losers I had ever heard. Absolutely no groove. YNQ are a contemporary 'funk/jazz' band in the best sense of the word that release stuff on Stones Throw (maybe other labels?). They're pretty good, being both contemporary but also steeped in the sounds of the sixties and seventies without being stuck there. For evidence of their prowess, just check the tracks that they play on, on the Madlib LP 'Shades Of Blue' LP - which is well worth a look anyhow. Dan P.S. Saga of Resistance comp is great.. 03. Recloose feat. J. Crayford “Paepulsariki” --- this one is a personal favorite, i like how it starts with just they keys for a long time, the the beats and electronic bleeps, etc. enter in slowly later... evolves very organically yet has tech-ey elements. 06. Mustang “Nuclear War" --- and love this one 07. Theo Parrish “Saga Of Resistance” --- awesome, understated, moody 10. Mocky “Departure Point" --- abstract, slow, dp cinematic. End of the night track... 4am as you collapse forward onto the bar spilling your drink everywhere and the 'space chords' by Outerzone Band are great little sonic bursts/phils/intervals, overall holds it all together well conceptually. peace, Matt MacQueen

Is he on air anymore? I know he occasionally releases his own music under the Dark Male moniker. I love the compilations he's assembled. Kickin really had some great records. Wish there could be something like this nationwide on the radio in the US. I know there's the internet but something about listening to a good DJ over the radio, makes me feel like there might be other people out there sitting glued next to their tuners. Internet radio is so - hmmm, impersonal? It's overly romantic I know but I like it. Re: (313) Radio One!!!
my major problem with radio 1 is the essential mix.. it really has gone downhill. i rememeber the days of tuning in and being surprised- new sounds, new DJs.. now its a mixture of the same croneys, same sound most weeks.. that's too bad... I used to get tapes of this sent here and I agree there used to be fresh stuff on it, mid to late 90s. Also liked Dave Clarke's (short lived?) radio pilot called The Truth... first time i heard Killa Bees and a lot of the early Relief records just as they were coming out (or even before). He would just get loads of whites from UR/Submerge and hammer them on the air with very little artist/title info. Then mix them alongside classics from Phuture, Bam Bam, Beltram, etc. Sometimes his voiceovers were funny on those. I can't believe - if you think about it - hottest UR white labels are being played on the radio nationally on a commercial radio station, unheard of in the US. Colin Dale's program (Abstrakt Dance?) was good at times.. was that on Radio 1 or somewhere else? I thought he had a good radio voice and persona on the air... I recall he did a UR interview way a few years back, right? Kind of hard interview because UR was of course being very quiet and secretive and Colin was doing his best to be respectful, it was funny. I think it's a hard combo to find someone who most importantly has good taste in music, then can DJ well technically, and ALSO hold a good radio on-air voice/vibe/feeling when necessary... you rarely get all of them in one person. (I'm could certainly improve in all 3 elements, for that matter... but especially the latter). :P peace, Matt MacQueen the recent exception being an excellent mix by DJ Heather from Chicago- that was cool... anyway, theres my ten pence worth.. feel free to rip me to shreds : ) kevin G de la Wild Loops

(313) Top 10 for October + Reviews
October Top 10 == 1. Freedom Soundz Feat. Vanessa Freeman - Feelings EP - Nepenta Promo 2. RSL - Wesley Music - Player 3. Pepe Bradock & Michelle Weeks - Distorted Echoes - KIF 4. Truby Trio - Universal Love (Âme Remix) - Compost 5. Stateless- Leave Me Now (Brooks Remix) - Freerange 6. Only Child featuring Amp Fiddler - U Bring Me Vibes - Grand Central 7. John Tejada - The Toiling of Idle Hands - Immigrant 8. John Arnold with Amp Fiddler - Get Yourself Together / I Can Be (inc Joshua / Spacek Remixes) - Ubiquity 9. LFO - Sheath - Warp 10. 32 Project - The Root Of World - Ibadan 11. I haven't cracked open the Jaylib album yet, but I bet it deserves an honourable mention. As you've probably noticed I've bought a ridiculous number of records recently, so I figured I should share with you the cream of the crop. For starters, there are two new John Tejada albums out as of last week (or at least that's when I found them). I just mixed through the entirety of each, so my impressions may not be 100% accurate, having only heard them once, and being in a hurry to get to other stuff, I found myself in the mix most of the time. Anyway... the first, with Arian Leviste is on Playhouse, 'Fairfax Sake'. Slightly clicky in places with those Tejada chords you'd expect. Much more techno than most Playhouse material. Some of it doesn't quite elevate to the levels I'd hope for, but the whole thing is solid throughout. Not a weak track on it really, but no single track stood out high above the rest. The second, 'The Toiling of Idle Hands' on Immigrant, is quite varied and showcases a good number of his talents. The whole thing is dance floor playable, but it covers a healthy range from broken techno to straight up Detroit sh*t (or at least his L.A. variant thereof). Having not heard his album on A13, but always having ranked 'The Matrix of Us' at the top of his discog, I'd have to rate this right beside it at a glance, if not covering as much downtempo stuff. The 4th, 7th and 8th tracks on this are really really nice but it all holds together as a proper techno album - a rarity at that. While I'm on the topic, the latest Domu + Volcov 'Last of the Great Apes' on Residual is really freaked out broken techno, and includes a crazy Titonton mix, with his beats at their funkiest. Three really solid tracks on this, and one that didn't particular affect me. And while on this topic, the latest Titonton 'Raunchy' is quite nice, if not his most groundbreaking work. It reminds me of his track on the Soul in Motion comp (maybe it was called 'Anticipation'???), but with beats that kick throughout. Some of the other new purchases that have really been doing it for me: Headspace 3 sampler - I don't think this is terribly new, but it's a great representation of Europe's take on Detroit. Fabrice Lig and Arne Weinberg's tracks stand out to me, but all four are really nice. Remind me to get these EPs! Techno is back! :) Only Child - U Bring Me Vibes - Grand Central: Features Amp Fiddler on vocals and keys, with two remixes from DSL (of Chili Funk fame), and another from Mantis Recordings. Each of the remixes adds a new twist, but the original holds it all together best for me. If you like Amp Fiddler, this is pretty much a must in my mind. John Arnold with Amp Fiddler - Get Yourself Together / I Can Be ( inc Joshua / Spacek Remixes ) - Ubiquity: Recently reviewed here to death, so I won't go into a lot of detail other than echoing the other sentiments. Each remix is great, and the originals are as good as you'd expect from this duo. I still haven't had a chance to take in the full John Arnold album yet b/c I want to devote the attention to it that it deserves. Stateless- Leave Me Now ( inc Swell Session / Brooks Remixes ) - Freerange: I really like the Stateless album 'Art of No State', and it sort of surprises me that I haven't seen more discussion of it anywhere (not necessarily here). The Brooks remix on this adds a bouncy galloping beat that kind of reminds me of some of Thomas Fehlmann's more recent beat work, with sparse sounds and melodies that don't interfere with the amazing, huge airy vocal. It also sounds to me as though he's altered the delivery of the vocals pretty substantially in order to fit it into his rearrangement. It works really well. This is another excellent remix from Brooks. I think I like his heavily vocal stuff best of his work, even if all if it is excellent. Pepe Bradock & Michelle Weeks - Distorted Echoes - KIF: I know I'm beating a dead horse, but this is fantastic. I'm sure it will be warming dance floors through the new year. Definitely makes the top 20 of 2003, without a doubt. Freedom Soundz Feat. Vanessa Freeman - Feelings EP - Nepenta Promo: Alex Attias certainly has a way with vocals. This may be the best record of my recent purchases. Very hard to classify - perhaps 'Broken House'? Although that description may not do justice to the prototypical West London synth line that

catching up on some old mail... sorry i'm late These records influenced him into making the 'Jack the Tab' compilation which although very good, never really struck me as being either a.) an Acid-House record - there wasn't a 303 in sight or b.) a radical new sound - it contained loads of samples much akin to what Meat Beat Manifesto and others had been doing a few years earlier. (313) GPO & Acid House Connection
The story (as far as I know) goes like this; Gen went to do a radio interview/gig in Chicago and was taken to a record shop where Derricks May & Carter worked. (The latter even went on tour with them as a rapper !!) Being partial to psychedelic music he asked them for the maddest records they had in the shop. They picked a selection of 'Acid House' out which he took back to the UK and played to death. These records influenced him into making the 'Jack the Tab' compilation which although very good, never really struck me as being either a.) an Acid-House record - there wasn't a 303 in sight or b.) a radical new sound - it contained loads of samples much akin to what Meat Beat Manifesto and others had been doing a few years earlier. Love him as much as I do I have to agree with the guy who said that anything he says should be taken 'with a pinch of salt'. In short the Porridge likes to exaggerate in interviews in order to attract publicity (he recently claimed that he was a re-incarnation of Aleister Crowley). Gen has been around many different musical styles/eras and can even stake claim to inventing a musical 'genre' with Throbbing Gristle (Industrial Music) but he definetly didn't coin the phrase 'Acid House'. I see a new thread starting with this one ;) It would be interesting to hear Fred's version of events regarding the whole GPO>Acid House debate. BTW - Are any other 313'ers off to the Throbbing Gristle re-union concert in Sussex, UK next May. 3 days of madness with TG, Chris & Cosey (now called Carter Tutti), Coil, Scanner, Richard H Kirk, Pansonic, Andrew Weatherall etc. etc. If so, pls post me privately if you fancy hooking up. RE: (313) John Tejada in NYC this Friday
i'll add my recommendation to this show. i brought jt to cleveland for our monthly warm art night in september, and he absolutely destroyed the room. playing from final scratch, john dropped a blend of click tracks, detroit chords, lush pulsating layers, perlonesque beats, etc. complete with scratching. it was 3 hours of perfectly programmed madness, and he had the room screaming for more when he came off the decks. definitely one to catch. -Original Message- From: Bryan Kasenic [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 3:28 PM To: 313 Subject: (313) John Tejada in NYC this Friday FRIDAY OCTOBER 10 The Bunker Special guests: John Tejada (Palette, 7th City | Los Angeles) Sara Walker (Direct Drive, Static | NYC) DJ Ripley (SoFat, HavocSound, Deathsucker Records | NYC) John Tejada is one of the most innovative techno/house producers we've heard, and we're constantly playing his tracks at the Bunker. (313) telepathic apologies
Sincere telepathic apologies to TigerSushi for being confused and thinking that they were bootlegging Psychic TV. For the record they did not bootleg the old Psychic TV track "Ov Power" for their TigerSushi release. Charles and I have cleared up this confusion directly. It appears that TigerSushi is a reputable company licensing tracks from another company that has a checkered past that they were not aware of. It's not fun getting taken advantage of by people in the music business. TigerSushi were stuck in the middle on this one. My sentiments are always with the Artists. Yeah, it's a decent venue. I was there for the Punisher show, when they were 6x over capacity. It was sweltering in the basement - but I'm told they've added fans, and were working on AC or something. No cover = No PPA. Re: (313) Paging Metroplex Records
I don't know yet ? I'm trying to get to the bottom of the PTV "Ov Power" release for Genesis P-Orridge. If I remember correctly there was no mention of it being a licensed track or even credited as a Psychic TV track on the TigerSushi release. Apparently, TigerSushi claims they licensed it from Some Bizarre which could be true. If they are licensing stuff from Some Bizarre then you are dealing with crooks. Apparently they are not aware of the Coil and PTV relations with Some Bizarre ? Not to mention everyone else that used to deal with Stevo. I mean Coil went to the trouble of releasing some of their Some Bizarre releases with this printed across the front "When are you going to pay us our royalties, Stevo ?" I would have assumed you would have noticed that. Why didn't they just contact the artists directly ? telepathic regards, fRED on 10/9/03 12:58 PM, Brendan Nelson at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > So are you alleging that they have bootlegged Environ releases? > >> -Original Message- >> From: FRED giannelli [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >> Sent: 09 October 2003 17:59 >> To: 313@hyperreal.org; [EMAIL PROTECTED] >> Subject: Re: (313) Paging Metroplex Records >> >> >> Not to mention this little item from Environ >> >> Welcome to the third edition of the Environ Newsletter! >> Feel free to forward this to friends/label/press. >> >> A Word on Bootlegs >> >> Apologies, but we'll start on a bad note so we don't have to >> end on one. >> We've noticed bootlegs of Environ material surfacing, often a >> whole track of >> ours with a simple a capella over it. Re: (313) sun ra
Speaking of Sun Ra. Can anyone recommend a few essential sun ra albums, that are pleasant to listen to (ie. not too experimental)? I really like the "lanquidity" album. I think it´s great!! Thanks, Maarten - http://www.morthenkiang.com
(313) Radio One!!!
hello 313sters, so far my attempts at mailing have not worked- if u are reading this- i have finally got thru!! anyway- radio 1.. i think they are kind of a nasty compromise.. u do get the odd interesting mix or tune every now and then. fergie played one of my tracks, which was nice cos there was no promotion, no hype, he just liked it and played it.. normally, especially with the likes of tongy, seb fontaine etc, you won't get things played unless there is serious promotion or connections behind something. my major problem with radio 1 is the essential mix.. it really has gone downhill. i rememeber the days of tuning in and being surprised- new sounds, new DJs.. now its a mixture of the same croneys, same sound most weeks.. the recent exception being an excellent mix by DJ Heather from Chicago- that was cool... anyway, theres my ten pence worth.. feel free to rip me to shreds : ) kevin G de la Wild Loops

Speaking of theo, I picked up SS012 last night at dance tracks, "Insane Asylum" is pretty dope, especially considering it was made in 1987! Or was it? The pressing is damn awful though. Re: (313) dreamgirl
The big money one you want is fantasy girl. Originally out on SRO records in 1987. Appeared on nu relics / house muzik in remixed form about 92/93 then on trax re issues - currently available Dream girl appeared originally on hot mix 5. Also on british jack tracks but without the accapella. Still a great tune in my book Mystery girl - originally on international house records..not been repressed at all I think... Never give up - dance mania. I don't think those stats are usually made public, as distributors don't like to release their figures and neither do labels...as far as I know. Especially if you are talking about more of the non-commercial dance labels (UR and the like..) But if they have a barcode, it can sometimes be traced through soundscan. Though I think you have to be a member to get those figures. http://home.soundscan.com/ -Original Message- From: Grammenos, Peter [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 9:59 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Record Sales Can someone tell me where I can find stats on dance record sale trends? -Pete --- Peter Grammenos Goldman Sachs & Co. The radio 1 thing is good and bad, i mean lets face it Fergie has had Ben Sims, Chris Finke, Agoria on the show. My mate saw Fergie and he's average, Jules is even worse... The fact these guys are promoting other techno to the masses is kind of a good thing as you will hear the odd Mills or Agoria tune the rest as you say would be the recycled stuff etc but the bad thing is that these guys are promoting it...bring back Dave Clarke or get someone new and fresh that understands the scene who will play a good rounded show, my fav would be Paula Temple of Totally Radio, why? cos she plays everything that is techno.. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thu 09/10/2003 10:44 To: john harvey; 313 Cc: Subject: RE: (313) UK Radio One >Add to the fact that >Jules said that DJ's charge too much and have damaged the scene...much coughing> He said he'd be happy to play for 25 people but I bet he >wouldn't play for petrol and a pint or even £25...He just gives good >television... this is utter rubbish, what a w*nker for saying that. RE: (313) UK Radio One
Fergie has had the likes of Umek doing guest mixes on his show recently. Judge Jules got into stuff like Andrew McLaughlin's Love Story and Adam Beyer's mix of Manipulated (cos of their cheesy elements I guess) and, like Fergie, has been playing a lot of the Beyer/Umek/Valentino/Tortured sh!te. Especially Fergie. Even Erick Morillo has been known to play Drumcode and Recycled Loops tunes in his sets. Judge Jules' and Fergie's fans expect conneisseurs of good techno to be grateful to them for playing this rather unimaginative subgenre on national radio for some reason - hence the debate on Little Detroit. It's the same old purist/populist debate, I suppose. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 8:44 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) UK Radio One Right, first off, this is not a wind-up (honestly) I was having a little read of Martins excellent site 'little detroit.net' There was a thread on there about Fergie/Judge Jules. To be honest Alex I wouldn't mind if the local DJ played Umek/Surgeon/Add a name - I think what people are taking offence at is Jules and Fergie saying they are breaking new ground and are the future of techno - it just a bit to rich for some - but I'd take it with a pinch of salt...Add to the fact that Jules said that DJ's charge too much and have damaged the scene... He said he'd be happy to play for 25 people but I bet he wouldn't play for petrol and a pint or even £25...He just gives good television... martin 9/10/03 8:44 AM [EMAIL PROTECTED]@uk.pwc.com > Right, first off, this is not a wind-up (honestly) > > I was having a little read of Martins excellent site 'little detroit.net' > > There was a thread on there about Fergie/Judge Jules. > > It says that they're playing the likes of Umek and Adam Beyer (I think > these were two of the names mentioned). > > Is this true? > > not that I'm in anyway a fan of any of that tackle, but really? these guys > on radio one? > > man, last time I paid any attention, Judges Jules was a terrible 'handbag' > dj, and fergie was a sh*t hardcore/'tekno' dj. > > does this represent a step in the right direction? do they play Mills gear? > or maybe some of the better harder stuff? > > very interested to know... > > thanks. > > alex > > > _ > > - End of message text > > This e-mail is sent by the above named in their > individual, non-business capacity and is not on > behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. > > PricewaterhouseCoopers may monitor outgoing and incoming > e-mails and other telecommunications on its e-mail and > telecommunications systems. Don't worry, they're still roobesh, or at least julie is, not heard Fergie, but I seem to recall seeing a guest mix by Umek on Fergie's show in the schedules P.S. any joy on the EDHID vol 2? Anyone heard the sun ra tribute on kindred spirits ? seems like there are lots of tracks from francisco mora / outerzone. His CD on planet e didn't do much for me so i don't really want more of the same. Ta. p
