The Ghostly tour rolled into Los Angeles last Saturday night. I got there at 11:30 and unfortunately missed out on seeing Midwest Product. Dabrye was up next. By the beard and the baseball cap I knew I was in trouble. Another Whiteboy-does-Hip-Hop thang, yup. My overall impression of him was that he's really good at cooking up some phat basslines, breaks and beats, but he doesn't know what to do with them. The songs have little structure above and beyond the basslines/beats, and often ended so abruptly that the audience was caught off-guard and didn't know to clap. My feeling is that he'd do well to collaborate with someone (hasn't he done so with Scott Herren, Mr. Prefuse 73?) that knows melodies and song structure that can lay stuff over the top of his reasonably good underlying stuff. Last year at Movement I saw Matthew Dear do a serviceable, if not exactly memorable, set at the Underground Stage. This time around things were completely different - there was a table on stage with a PowerBook, a mic(!) in the middle, and a small stand with another keyboard next to the mic. Matthew strolled up on stage all swayve and de-boner wearing a white v-neck shirt and a black suit jacket(!!!) - looking nothing so much like a cross between Pete Sampras and John Tejada :) He was followed by someone else wearing a casual brown sportcoat and a bright off-white tie. Well, this should be interesting, I thought ... And, indeed, it sure was! I don't know how to describe the "backing tracks" per se, but they were sorta minimal Tech-House-y in that sorta "Yeah, I'd recognize these as Matthew Dear" if you heard 'em separately sort of way ... but the main surprise was, Matthew sang on all of 'em!!! He conjured up the ghosts of Bowie and Sylvian, in a deep voice singing lyrics that I could only make out snippets of, but which conjured up the ghost of John Foxx in a detached, angular, (dare I say it) Electroclash-ian fashion. Let me put it this way - normally I really don't like vocals with my Techno (or House) music, but this was brilliant! Somehow it all worked. Highly recommended. Sorry - maybe I should have been a bit more specific in my description of what I was looking for. deep house tracks that are more Chicago/Detroit in feeling as opposed to big diva type vocals so far Roy Davis Jr., Abacus, Main Street, and Larry Heard have been closer to what I'm looking for Maurice Fulton's Ladyvipb is still the template I'm using there were a few others that were suggested that I'm not familiar with so, any suggestions based on those? well, if you're hubby is the folk-music lovin' type then I could suggest some middle ground (depending on how purist he may be) check out Jauna Molina, anything on the Melodic label, Morr Music, Beth Orton there's a whole genre that's been badly tagged with the name folktronica also see The Detroit Experiment (jazz electronic by Carl Craig), Broadcast, Blockhead, the Books, Mum (Icelandic band), Four Tet, Isan also see stuff that's at the Big Chill music festival - usually Movement also has some nice crossover acts as well MEK [EMAIL PROTECTED] a.eduTo: 313@hyperreal.org cc: 08/05/2004 07:30 Subject: (313) Thanks! ken, if youre refferring to atomlys comments he only stated that because he knows yussel (josh) and yes, hes jewish. i think atom just found it funny that z99 made nazi comments (jokingly, im sure) towards someone that in fact is jewish. it was just a tounge in cheek way of pointing out someone jumping too quick on a joke and having it backfire, because the subject in question is jewish. dont worry. the only one around these parts who is truly going to be offensive for a lil while is metowards tom. because he is without a doubt the most pathetic excuse for a human being that has existed within the confines of this (or any other hyperreal list) in a VERY long time. oh, and tom. eat a dick, will you? derek. (313) miss kittin in SF...
hey everyone.. thanks for whoever posted encouraging tomkat and i to change our plans and go hear miss kittin while she was in SF. we gave up a renegade free party in the woods w/ sound systems, but it was definitely worth it! she was amazing! i techno-touristed this year and went to both movement and sonar, and i actually think that miss kittin's set last friday was the best set i've heard all year. (it was similar to her set at sonar, but longer, and personally i think much better.) anyway, it was great and it was exactly what i needed. she threw in hawtin, mills, green velvet, dj rush, new order, hip hop, lots of acid (!) and tons of great stuff i couldn't trainspot because i was too tranced out dancing. anyway, thanks for the encouragement, monikat
Re: (313) 313 Tenth Anniversary Party
'Satellite' (also) means 'spin-off', right? There's no reason for communities in whatever city not to have their OWN party. We could organise one in Sydney or Melbourne, you could have one in Detroit and London and Mars, wherever. Maybe rope in some new friends and let them know about the list. I am talking 'decentralising'. Also I think people should develop a sense of humour on this list, as does Sean. Life is too hard without fighting over such things. We are all friends, aren't we? ;) > Cyclone Wehner wrote: >> >>Look dear friends, the solution is really obvious. (313) thoughts, questions on moving...
noticed the thread on moving on this list... i'm currently in san francisco (well, ok, over the bay in bezerkeley), and for the past several years have been feeling the urge to leave the bay area. i'm just not happy here - i miss the seasons like back east (i'm from jersey), and i miss the summer (you know "the coldest winter i ever spent was a summer in san francisco...") a move would be a big deal, though - i'm not as young as i once was, and my partner and i have accumulated a lot of stuff (well, he has A LOT of records he's not going to part with). anyway, since i don't see how either of us could make a living at this point in the uk or berlin or barcelona, i'm putting out feelers about other places in the u.s. so, is there anyone on this list in asheville, chapel hill, austin or ann arbor? (these are a few places i'm checking out.) what's the techno scene like there? uh, is there one? (excluding ann arbor from that question, since i know it's near detroit.) techno brings me so much joy and it's close to my heart and i don't want to give that up. i know a place can be what you make it, and i've done my share of diy stuff here in the bay, but i enjoy the freedom of going out and just dancing and not having to throw the party as well, so i'd like wherever i move to have at least something going on... or maybe i should just figure out a way to make a living in europe. (sigh).
RE: (313) Techno Geography
I first heard house/techno in sydney in the 80s. found out it came from the US and moved to new york in 92. best thing i ever did - the music, clubs, djs, friends (and the pizza slice) changed my life. walking back over the brooklyn bridge with a group of like minded friends as the sun rises after dancing all night to juan atkins and carl craig or hearing inner city play 'pennies from heaven' as i danced in hart plaza, dancing with my girlfriend margie (and otto!) to larry heard playing 'play it loud' in detroit, djing at a loft party in brooklyn while the crowd bugged out and a meteor shower rained overhead - i didn't even dare dream of such things when i first fell in love with dance music. my advice - rob a bank or steal from your grandmother and move out of whatever parochial back wood city or town you're in. if you love this sh*t follow your heart. move to where the music is, to where there is a large group of people who feel the same way as you. everything else is babylon. james www.jbucknell.com "Redmond, Ja'Maul" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] To erkinswill.com> <313@hyperreal.org> cc 05/08/04 02:38 PM Subject RE: (313) Techno Geography I'm in NC like JT, and I don't think things (techno related) can get any worse anywhere else. But When I think about moving to a better place I automatically think of the addage that people make a place (city) the city doesn't make a person. Well maybe New York Does. But to be honest I would be faced with the same situations ANYWHERE that I am faced with here. I may get more bookings in Germany or Detroit or somewhere in Europe, but would I get enough to support my life??? And if I did would I actually enjoy it? What's holding me back has nothing to do with where I am. I'M holding myself back. I'M the one that can't decide whether I really want to play out in a smoky cub 4 nights a week. I'm the one that has to decide whether I would be happy with less money than what I make at my 9 to 5. To make a long story short neither Berlin or Detroit would make those decisions easier. It matters, and it does not matter. First, I must quote The Pet Shop Boys... "...there's a lot of opportunities, if there are'nt you can make them..." I've been very tempted to move to Detroit. However, after questioning my motivations, I see that by doing so, I am only chasing myths and ghosts of what I think a "Detroit" experience "should" be. I can say that the few times I have visited, I have been completely blown away: the sincere people, Detroit's love of ALL music, Detroit's freakishness...and of course all of the incredible artists that populate that city, in their varied mediums, not just techno music. I'm talking photgrapy, advertising, graphic design, political thought, journalism. Detroit Rock City! Godamn it! I really think you are born into it and must have it in your blood and veins. I am happy with the idea that it CANNOT be transplated by a simple change of geography. (Apply to your dream city/ situation of choice) Great teachers want their disciples to spread the word, set up their own churches, communes, record labels, clubs, 'zines...etc. Detoit is the teacher. I guess it depends on what you are doing. I have found that more easy going evirons fuel my creativity, as a producer. I can riff and ramble on this a lot more. My head hurts right now.
