Thanks for positive note Minto, but I must tell you that was the worst
live set we've done in years. The sound guy screwed us so bad we should
have stopped. The fact that he was inexperienced did not help matters. I
was going to lose it and one point and really start killing people... ;)

Back from tha D after 20 hours of being on the
road...off the top of my head while the weekend is
still fresh in my mind:

*this is a long review so break out the potato chips
and onion dip*

Day 1:

Woke up around 11am and made it out to Submerge to
take the gang record shopping. it was hard to get them
out of there after entering. really happy to see
Submerge reaching out to more labels outside of
Detroit too. As always it was like feeding time at the
troff, lots of techno enthusiasts and very little
elbow room to dig for the slop. got to the festival
kind of late after friday night's pre-fuse-in party at
Oslo. As always every year previous, the schedule was
so out of wack it didn't matter looking at the print
out of the schedule i had brought with me. When we
arrived Luke Eargoggle had just started up in the
Musiclogical tent. He played a sweet set of LIVE
electro and egyptian lover-like beats. sux we missed
Orgue's set cause we had heard it rained early on at
noon and there were a lot of people checkin out
Brian's set. Also saw a bit of Pirahnahead's deep
house dj set which was nice to hear as the sun was
breakin out on the main stage. Really overall a nice
beautiful cool and breezy weekend. Then it was back to
the tent which is where I and pretty much most of the
gang stayed the rest of the evening with highlight
sets from Legowelt (best set i had ever heard Danny
play going more into old school chicago Polarius
mode), Cosmic Force (I had thought Cosmic Force was 2
guys but finally met Ben and he explained Edo does not
have anything to do with Cosmic Force anymore and that
it has been that way for a while now. Edo still
records for Ben's marguerita label though), Bangkok
Impact, and Detroit in Effect! What a show they put on
too!!! Klen and Serge from Clone also played brilliant
dj sets. Ultradyne ended the night with a nice set of
dark mysterious EViLL! In between I caught pretty much
all of Aril Brika's DEEP set on the main stage. Also
Fabrice rocked it well too! lost of Detroit and gosh i
remember hearing Robert Armani's Circus Bells played
too! nice! and it's a shame we didn't meet up. next
time Fabrice! ;) Missed a lot of people's sets too
like John Tejada's set as well as tony olivierra,
suburban knight, and electofunk live! which i was
really bummed to miss since it was one of last year's
highlight's for me. afterparty action started off at
this middle eastern restaurant in Dearborn which had
some nutty dope arabic music band playing. The food
was incredile and the music was sweet...very
inspirational. afterwards some crashed at the hotel
and a few of us troopers made it out to see our
favorite $tink play live late into the night... j
played some favorites of course and a new track i had
not heard before which was this slow struttin'
bassline tune that had even legowelt jammin while all
the other dutch crew were passed out on the floor.
haha. A nice chill set by mah dowg with such short
notice and amazing considering the little time he had
to put it together. whew what an amazing first day at
the festival. i would have been just as happy to go
home at that point.

Day 2... slow gettin up and made it out to the
festival way late thinking we had missed raiders of
the lost Arp but again the schedule all different from
the posted one and we caught most of Mario's set which
was definitely a highlight of the weekend. Scan 7 was
sick! tough as nails techno and so good it made me
punch convextion in the arm pretty hard. that track
with the 808 kick in one bar with the decay all the
way up *ucked me up! the re-uniting of AUX 88 was nice
too. Seeing Model 500 LIVE was something I had been
anticipating for a long time. It was cool to see Juan
up there on the vocals but what was up with the
air-101? haha too bad you can't play chords on that
keyboard :P still a treat to see even as funny as some
of the new juan lyrics were. I'm the audiotech up in
this *itch! hahah yah hearing technicolor on that
sound system was sweet. model 500 kicked off equals
lame...so we ran over to see Robotnick. It was packed
in the tent and i would describe it as italo-techno
most of the time he played. very hi-nrg and not my cup
of tea musically but fun to watch him doing old man
dance moves up there and smiling real silly. Greg
Earle and I were diggin the moment he played some OMD
though :P late LATE night action included Coney's in
Dearborn and a super late night LIVE/dj set by Rob
Hood. Rob was awesome! i dunno what KJ means by his
mixing being so bad...he was smooth as butter! He had

Yeah, we decided to help EA out by not playing and saving them some money.
Ended up hanging around for a while after on the sidewalk just chatting it
up with people. I think Rob and Alan Oldham played later. I think the last
minute venue change and the large amount of afterparties killed the night.
The venue was amazing with the video on the walls and sound. Hopefully
some events will be thrown there in the near future.

UNBRIDLED OPINION FOLLOWS
/warning

Well, I have to say, without a doubt, that Akufen played the best set I
heard all weekend!!! Due to a venue change and some erroneous, printed
information, I went through hell and then some just to find the
damn party, but I was determined to not miss it. I'm glad I made the
effort, 'cause his set was really quite inspiring and a welcome change
from the minimal club fare being served at the festival. His set made
his mix on Fabric17 seem quite pale in comparison.

Whoever the DJ was who followed Akufen was pretty tight too, but I had
to leave so I could catch Robert Hood's set at the Eastern Market.
Robert's set was good, but it wasn't as adventurous as when I heard him
a few months ago. Though I was totally exhausted (I'd been up for
almost 24 hours at that point), I wasn't leaving until it was over and
the lights were turned on!!! I did love how massive the warehouse was!!
It made me realize how long its been since I've been to a good ole
warehouse party! The bass was THUNDEROUS!!!WOW!!! I liked the crowd
too. Small (and made even smaller by the sheer size of the warehouse)
but appreciative.

Mathew Jonson and Luciano played really good sets at the Paxahau party.
I'd never heard either of them play before, but I'm definitely willing
to check them out again.

On the other hand Sammy Dee, who was the primary reason I went to the
Paxahau party, played a shockingly flaccid set!!! OI!!! Talk about
lackluster, clunky, pedestrian beats!!! Yeah, he was playing in the
lounge, but that's NO excuse. Nuh-uh!! I tried to be understanding,
but his set was a nap and a half!! Next!!! I couldn't believe this was
the same man who served it up so divinely at a Paxahau show a few

months back!! :(

Aux88 were...wellI decided to go to the food court to sample the
frozen pizza on sale in the food court. (why on earth didn't someone
get Buddy's Pizza to set up a stand in there???)

And the chicken tikka masala at the Indian food stand was vile and
overpriced. It almost gave met the runs, but through sheer willpower I
avoided the dreaded trip to the port-a-potty!!! Needless to say, I
didn't go back for more the next day.

Model 500 was better than I thought they'd be, but in a different way
than I expected. I don't know why they didn't bill themselves
as Cybotron, since that's what they played. I was hoping to hear
something like 'Neptune' and instead got Cosmic Cars. No complaints
here, though. There were moments that were really exquisite. Its a real
pity their time got cut short. I was really getting excited to see where
their set would go.

The DJs at the Nefarious tent were fun as usual. The closing DJ
Sunday night was particularly good. I think that was the only time I'd
actually DANCED at the festival. Even if the main stage acts aren't of
interest to me, I know I can always swing by the Nefarious tent for some
scruffy entertainment.

The Paxahau/Mutek stage left a lot to be desired, as far as quality of
sound. All I heard was thudding bass and little else!! I understand
that the DJs might want to come off as hard and minimal, but it
sounded to me like there was way too much bass. I couldn't hear
anything else. As usual, the crowd didn't seem to care. All the DJ had
to do was periodically fade out the bass a little then crank it again
and the crowd would cheer as if it was the most mindblowingly
spectacular thing they'd ever heard...

Hawtin's set left me unphased. I like his CDs and all, but I don't want
to hear anything that minimal at a festival unless its coming from
Robert Hood. ;)

Unfortunately, I completely missed Octave One and Kenny Larkin and they
were my main reason for going on Monday!! :(

Monday night, I opted to check out the Electric Avenue party as much for
the space itself as the DJs playing there. I figured Oliver Ho and
company would be able to work those acoustics too, but unfortunately the
party was cancelled! I was really hoping to end the festival weekend
with a bang! :((

As for the crowd at the festival: it was as motley and periodically
unsavory as I'd expect a crowd of that size to be. I prefer it when the
crowd is youthful and a little silly and definitely tripping wildly,
but candy ravers are good in a pinch. However, I do have issues with
people who take out their frustration on having to navigate a dense
crowd of people by brusquely barging through the crowd to get where they
want to go. I really wanted to grab few of them and beat them repeatedly.

There seemed to be fewer goth/punk/industrial types out and about this
year (the Victorian couple were great, though) and I didn't see a
mini-stage for them near the water like I've seen in previous years.
What happened? I hope this doesn't become a trend at the festivals.
Last year, I remember seeing a pretty good synthpop band play in that
area. They were

I like to hear variation from recorded tracks whether I hear an electronic act
or a rock act playing. Its boring for me to hear the exact recorded output just
played live. With a real instrument based live act you can get away with it a
bit more as everything does have be be completely recreated live, but even so,
I prefer to hear live reworkings of tracks. With electronic acts it is easier
to play the same thing exactly as it is. For me, it is not fun to hear a
perfect recreation of recorded tracks when I see a live act. That's my opinion
on it.

Bren.

how could there be no variation if there were live keys being played and live

and ugh, homogenizing electonic music cliche's like sets need to flow
together argh!!
funny how when you're a rock band you can get away with just about anything,
sit there and play with distortion over some weird loops for awhile, genius
(dude why isnt he doing such n such?! i never hear that..). why does there seem
to be more rules in electronic music, i guess the fans are more ocd or
something. seriously why is dance music so conservative, musically? rules rules.
i seriously doubt the performance was a matter of just hitting play or
skip. thats really insulting especially if you are just speculating. to
recreate a studio recording on stage with gear is pretty great in my book. it
is quite a bit different than the recorded version even if only because it
hasnt been hammered with compression yet (the mastering process of making a
record/cd)...just hearing the songs without the dynamics all crushed is awfully
nice and goes a long way to making the song sound live, electric.
everybody i know who saw octave one really enjoyed it, people who i wouldnt
thinkwish i'd caught it.

OK, wtf, now I'm very confused and a bit annoyed.

Please, anyone who has got definitive info or even just a steer please
speak up.

Is the Buzz series of represses a bootlegging operation or not?

We all know the (apparently) good quality of the sleeves, and the poor
quality of the actual pressings.

And what seems like silence from the artists. I had started to take this
to mean that there was *some* sort of deal going on, even if it was one
in a grey area legally.

I have to argue with this last statement.

If the original pressing is sold out long ago, the only people whose beans
are nicked are the record collectors/dj's/everybody who own the original
record. If there is a legit repress floating around, then they're taking
the beans off carl's kids.

Note I'm not saying bootlegging is ok.

Not really, cos Carl Craig should still reserve the right to repress one day
should his kids ever need some beans and he is less likley to sell as many
units if everyone has already snapped up the boots.

I need recordings from the bunker tent though. Bad. Any smackulator bits?
C'mon plze?

Sorry, but no recordings were made during the entire saturday, atleast not
by the artists nor the organization. Perhaps somebody in the audience
recorded the sets, but I'm not aware of those.

If something from the dutch tent pops up, I'll post it here.

Hello all,
I'm new to the list although I've been stalking it for a while.
Just got back from Detroit(first time) and was totally blown away by the
city, people and the music. I was searching the web for films about
Detroit and found this.

http://humanities.uwe.ac.uk/bristoldocs/detroit/

It's been shown a couple of times in Detroit and I think it's being
screened in London and Leeds soon. Looks like it's worth a view but I
don't think it's on DVD yet.

Highlights of my trip were... Aril Brikha. First thing I heard as I got
to the festival.
Kenny Larkin: Absolutely steaming.
Big dude wearing the green 'Tiesto sucks' t shirt: Everyone who came
into contact with him had a smile on their face.
Michigan central depot: Driving though the tunnel beside the depot and
coming through the other side alive. Priceless.
Ken Ishii: Didn't expect such a top set from him. Glad I stayed for that
one.
UR: Electronic Gospel: Takes your heart to another level.
Rob Hood and T1000 at EA despite small numbers and beard stroking
DJ3000 breaking into my car. (see below) Thanks.

Lowlights
Missing Ultradyne twice.
My friend locking my car keys in the boot/trunk of my car outside submerge.

Cheers

In reference to the film itself, I haven't seen but everyone I talked

Okay, I feel like playing the devil's advocate here, and I'd argue that
what your point misses is that information is not property in the
traditional sense of a car or house... Some people would argue that it
is in the nature of information that it will spread despite whatever
legislative limits are put on it. It is also in the public interest
that information be readily available, which is why we have libraries.

In the US, (according to the constitution) copyright law is supposed to
exist to balance the rights of the individual producer with the rights
of society to progress and benefit from the intellectual property. If
information becomes completely unavailable, then society no longer is
able to benefit from it. It is one thing if a work is unpublished, but
something else if it is simply out of print.

If a record is not in print, and a friend of mine has it, I have no

2005-06-03 Thread Big 50 Entertainment
Give me a break,
It's not information, copyrights are intangible assets fixed in sound
recordings ultimately owned by someone. Perhaps you're thinking of public
domain songs.
Copyright holders have exclusive reproduction and distribution rights which
have been violated with these copies. So, not only have the eight artists
involved been screwed but also the label that put it out (or whoever owns
its rights).
The records are still available to this society but no one wants to seem
to wait until they come across them.

I've been guilty of copyright infringement personally but I won't try to
justify it by saying is should be available because people want it.

Re: (313) EA afterparty Sunday

The walls and floorspace were mostly plain and uncluttered. There was a
small seating area in the middle area between the front and back
soundsystems, though some people chairs to the dance floor area of the
main soundsystem.

The only eye candy was the video projections on the wall, which were
very effective considering sheer amount of uninterrupted wall space they
filled.

I didn't see a back area of any sort. But I didn't get there till late,
so maybe it was open earlier?

There weren't many people there at all, at least not when I got there at
4am. The small number of people only further accentuated just how truly
massive the space was but the benefit of that is that you were much more
ENGULFED by the music. The bass had oodles of room to stretch its legs.

That really sucks that the party was a financial disaster, though.
Maybe they should throw a benefit party for themselves at that space
next weekend to make up for the $$$ they lost ;)

hi all
i just bear this question in mind for so long that i thought, i just
release it here ;)
has anyone here got tips on records that aren't commonly known but
really are amongst your personal classics, i mean, dance records that
you feel like determined your passion with house and techno (or
affiliated) but never seemed to have gained the apt attention they
probably deserved to your likings? if you wanna share, please do - i
would be so curious, as i'm sure i miss out on so many beautiful records
i never heard of

while i kind of re-organized my private stock of records i redetected
some of these records, and some of these, mostly originating from the
earlier nineties, are like:

hi all
i just bear this question in mind for so long that i thought, i just
release it here ;)
has anyone here got tips on records that aren't commonly known but
really are amongst your personal classics, i mean, dance records that
you feel like determined your passion with house and techno (or
affiliated) but never seemed to have gained the apt attention they
probably deserved to your likings? if you wanna share, please do - i
would be so curious, as i'm sure i miss out on so many beautiful records
i never heard of

while i kind of re-organized my private stock of records i redetected
some of these records, and some of these, mostly originating from the
earlier nineties, are like:

-transform/'transformation (maurizio's mix) (see saw)
-powa/'hoods in da house (mousetrap)
-ricky r/'underground morality' (progressive motion)
-sabres of paradise vs therapy?/'nowhere' (remix) (A M UK)
-ibrahim alfa/'machine code' (mosquito)
-marvo genetic/'fourth wave ep' (new world basics)
-wookey/'who's listening' (10th planet)
-biogen and ruxpin on uni:form (from iceland)
-neil landstrumm/'paskal ep' (mosquito)

I have a copy of part 1 and was wondering how many parts there
 are? part
2? 3?

side a is fxcking sick. i'd never heard this mix before
 anywhere, which is
suprising maybe I dont get out enough anymore.

there's only 2 parts, both on the original 12. part 2 is just
kinda boring compared to part 1. i never listened to that bootleg
one youve got so i couldnt tell you which track is which.

I don't think so.. The Set Up is much slower, with some soporific loops
that sound like they were jacked from Stevie Wonder - plus I think it
has a break where a vocal sample comes in and threatens to kill your
mother, your 2 kids...and that fat ugly bitch of yours

I know that track on the clip above, but I can't place it.

'Without a shadow of a doubt this is Moodymann's best known piece and
dropped at the right time has the ability to send a crowd absolutely
berserk, with its seemingly endless tease of an intro, utilising Bob James'
original, 'Spunky' to colossal effect and over layered with KDJ's now
familiar skits and background party chatter, before exploding into one of
the funkiest bass lines you'll ever here. Essential Moodymann. Limited,

RE: (313) drunk as fuxmix

2005-06-03 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
Lemme just say that the mix section of my itunes is a very selective place
because I rarely find mixes that engage me enough to occupy a small space and
really sink deep in for the duration (phenomenally short on time , me). As a
result, I've only got maybe 6 that I've kept. This mix has not only kept a
spot, but has been in heavy rotation. Dope biz. If you didn't run it the first
time you're dum. Do it now. Feel hot like paris hilton while you listen. I did.
Didn't last though.

Simon Vrebos: now I'm offended!

Alex Bond: no offence meant Simon, sorry! twas just a lil joke. in a way. or
was it serious? who knows? however, I certainly didn't mean to offend you.

Ok, I'm sorry too. I just got a bit carried away when you mentioned beans and
kids and Carl Craig :-)

Dan: This is consumerism gone mad!
Just because someone has an item you want doesn't mean that you have
the automatic right to buy it. They might not want to sell it, and
since it's their property it's entirely up to them. That doesn't
justify a bootlegger stealing it from them.
I'm going to sound like a proper old git now, but people these days
seem to forget that you can't have everything. Some things in life
just aren't available, and that's simply too bad, get over it!

Ok, you have a point there. And yes, it's definitely consumerism gone mad.
That's what these records can do to you! But I don't think it's their (the
artists) property. The rights to the material are probably owned by the Buzz
boss, whoever that may be. It could be an old fart who doesn't give a damn
anymore and is sure as hell not gonna bother sueing the bootleggers.

Jodie Svagr: Kinda pissed me off... it may seem to an outsider that the peeps
from Detroit are rolling in Dough, but in reality they don't have cash flowing
out of their pockets... Detroit's the slowest economy in the US... very poor
actually... it's unfair to those in the Detroit techno industry for outsiders
to get all pissy because their records aren't being repressed... the money
might not be there...

Hey, I didn't say they are loaded. I meant that if they have the rights to
their own music, they could be making more money then they do now.

well. these mofos are not broke. there's no excuse for people to
not be repressing things that are in demand. they have to realise
what the other option is. if not, theyre stupid as well as rich.

ITS THEIR MUSIC ITS THEIR MONEY THEY OWE YOU NOTHING
it means a whole lot more to them than it does to you!! it's theirs!! NOT
YOURS. YOU HAVE NO SAY. DEMAND IS MEANINGLESS. if you have such savvy business
sense, start your own damn label and license the tracks (i'm sure the rights
have reverted to the artists by now -- so get to it)!!

maybe they arent interested in spending their time re-releasing tracks they did
a dozen years and feel they've moved beyond, whatever their reason, it's their
prerogative and they dont even need any excuse or reason. and bootleggers have
NO EXCUSE. capitalism is not an excuse (oh well, there was demand, so of course
someone has to step in and supply uh?!?)

BESIDES most of these artists dont even run labels, or if they do they run
labels where re-releasing this stuff doesn't fit. but THEY NEED NO EXCUSE.

self-important consumerism gone mad yes!!

I'm feeling this tho.

Cause see, I've got an overwhelming demand (complete with signed medical
affidavit) for a black on chrome 67 toronado on diamond studded dubbs. I fully
expect everyone within reach of a classic car dealer and rim shop to
immediately begin sorting me out. Tom, you gonna send off the letters to
derrick and see if he'll loan me one of his joints? Or better yet, I'll send
off a letter to the htfr guys to see if they will bootleg me one.

your comparison is so flawed. classic cars are bootlegged by
companies other than the ones who made them, except theyre called
kits. you can build any of those classic joints on easy and
cheap to find frames for mere fractions of what an original in
mint condition would cost you. again, there is demand, someone
steps in and supplies it. the entire capitalist system functions

or. ok. our macho cat record sold out and had another 500 orders at least. we
want to repress it someday maybe. but we want to do other sh:t right now. um we
own that sh:t. we should feel safe in our ownership of it. we are not going to

Totally flawed and absurd.
I was just bugging on the logic Tom. Cause the sense of entitlement to someone
else's prop is just as absurd to me (living around too many bassheads coming
up, nahmeen? Gotta watch yo shxt).

Personally speaking (and being serious this time) when I feel the pangs for a
record I just cannot find, I either just store it away in my hunt till I die
cranial lobe or, if it's really strong, channel that feeling into a new track
as an homage to the futility of being a record freak. More productive and feels
better at the end of the day. But to each his own.

Just so that I'm clear though. If I send you (the collective you) any of my
shxt, it better NOT magically transform into information and make it's way
free! Cause if it does, Imma go on some Matrix theory and assume all matter is
information, then help some of (insert offending bootlegger) 's information
find it's way free...to my crib. And I may let his face borrow some of my
biological information too if he get's too lippy. Fxcking bootleggers.

Most sincerely produced music is a personal expression of someone's inside
landscape and most should be grateful for the glimpse and respect the artists'
choice of presentation (of which timing is an important part), but no...
