KDJ 5
Hi all - Just learned that some (all?) of last year's KDJ 5 repressings have two tracks on the A-side I don't suppose anyone on this list wants to sell me one or at least tell me if both tracks are new or if they have appeared elsewhere in the KDJ catalog Matt
Re: UR Rarities
> Just wondering: have all the early UR releases been > re-released on vinyl > by now? Which ones are left & how rare are they? > Which ones are virtually impossible to track down? Mad Mike keeps these perpetually in print. http://www.submerge.com has just about everything UR ever did, at something like $4-5 a piece. Can't miss with that. The UR SID stuff you might have to ask about and there are one or two UR 12"s that have been out of print for a long time (Fury and Piranha are the ones that come to mind). A lot of the UR releases can only be appreciated nostalgically or ideologically these days; some sound really painfully dated and some of them were never that good. However there are a couple that remain among the best Detroit 12"s of all time: the Sonic EP, Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Punisher, Message to the Majors, and some of their remixes. Also recommended while you're at Submerge would be the back catalogs of Red Planet and Basic Channel, the former defining modern trance (that sounds awful; don't blame the influencer for the influencees' behavior) and the latter being just about the greatest consistent label in techno outside of KDJ and Sound Signature. (The same is not true, by the way, of Chain Reaction, so those releases aren't really recommended.) Matt
KDJ
Two new ones from KDJ KDJ 29 Andres KDJ 30 JAN KDJ 30 is JAN 001 which was supposed to be KDJ 16 really nice ideological style from him, like 'Amerika' but with a nicer loop (an exhalation that sounds like an old slave freedom song or something, so much soul) with more interesting dialogue put over the top Can anyone on this list tell me if they have a copy of KDJ 5 with two tracks on the A-side? Mine only has one but I read a review somewhere implying that there were two Thanks, peace, respect, Matt
Re: [313] brinkmann opens the can of worms
This race issue isn't that interesting if it's good, who cares where it's from, or who's doing it? I know KDJ and Theo are two producers who speak out about appropriation of black music, but I'd interpret their comments as more against people who misappropriate it (which, to be honest, is just about everyone). Anyone who thinks that's racist is suffering from more than a dissociation of sensibility - it has more to do with justified anger over what is the focal point of a cultural tradition being cheapened to make some bank/fame. However, in the case of the more intelligent German house producers (i.e. Brinkmann) it really is 'Vision Meets Vision'; Brinkmann is trying to do something different, to bridge the German minimal tech and the Detroit soul. I think he's still practicing, but the Ingrahm track and 'Can I Ask You' from Soul Center CD 2 are just awesome. He isn't stealing black music, watering it down, and getting accolodates off it, he's taking it as source material for something different. Also witness Basic Channel playing around with dub; doesn't sound like Tubby's, because it's a variation, not Tubby Lite. Keb Darge sums it up well in some liners: 'Sissy Walk will be familiar, some young pretender achieved glory on the back of this and a Just Brothers track by adding a few stupid shouts and noises, then kidding on he was a great innovator.' This is, I think, what lots of these Detroit producers are talking about. I got in an argument with somebody about how Fatboy Slim was entitled to do this: he really isn't. There's no excuse for mediocrity, but if you're going to do it, don't insult peoples' traditions of quality, original music. But no one would doubt Keb Darge's knowledge of and respect for black music: he's responsible for literally saving hundreds of 45s from extinction, and makes some mean, mean sets of music you'd never heard otherwise. For a good article on this issue, relating to jazz and Wynton Marsalis, check this URL: http://www.tnr.com/012201/wieseltier012201.html Alla prossima, Matt
Re: [313] DEMF no Ritchie Hawtin!!
re: DEMF Jose - never fear! Norma Jean Bell is playing, this means almost assuredly KDJ will be there, either on piano or on turntables, or on something. At least, I would hope. I couldn't imagine Kenny not being at the DEMF, he's one of the few Detroit techno producers who really supports the city. Also, Rick Wilhite nice. Maybe Rick can repress KDJ 008 and 011 to celebrate. As for no Richie Hawtin, as far as I'm concerned, that's excellent. In fact, if Richie Hawtin were playing at the DEMF, points would be deducted. No Theo Parrish, though. Matt

New KDJ
Hey - Did anyone manage to get one of those new KDJ records? (Jan 001). This is getting really, really elitist when I can't get a copy two days after it comes out. Thumbs up to anyone who tells me how it sounds or God forbid has any for sale. Matt
more tracklisting q's
Anyone got track listings for any of these? Pandamonium 002 (Dewayne Davis: It Shows) Pandamonium 005 (NJB: Love Me In the Rain) Pandamonium 007 (NJB: Dreams) Pandamonium 013 (Dewayne Davis: Wha Cha Do For Me) And also which track by KDJ is on the Abstract Fusion comp . Anyone helping me out gets the personal satisfaction of helping finish the KDJ/Theo/NJB/Wilhite discography (for now) . if anyone is curious there are nearly 100 records listed with tracks (very little overlap) by the 3 Chairs and Norma . yikes. And I don't even know about all the missing catalog #'s . Matt
tracklistings ....
Cats and kittens - Need someone to tell me what Moodymann tracks are on these respective comps: Adventures In Techno Soul (Ferox) Abstract Fusion (Trackmode/Music Is) (Is the latter just a track from the MU001 EP he did for Music Is?) Also, anyone know if there are any other comps w/exclusive KDJ/Moodymann tracks? I'm guessing not . Matt
Re: [313] Moodymann.com
I think this is Moodymann's official site, as it seems to emanate from another site that looks officially set up (beatwax, I think). So big ups to KDJ for getting on the Internet if this is him. Maybe he will take advantage of the global community to give people the heads up on new releases, or at least some cool content. Matt

Re: [313] They Love You In New York
KDJ9: U Can Dance If U Want 2 2x12" has Prince's influence all over it, methinks. As far as finding it, there were rumors of an imminent KDJ back catalog repressing. If these rumors are true, he'll hopefully do KDJ1, 2, 8, 9, and 11, which are particularly scarce, and do KDJ3 with the (awesome) B-side as well. Why this label isn't kept in print ala UR/Transmat is somewhat beyond me, considering the large demand and great material. On another note having never heard/seen the Moody Traxx EP (KDJ1), I'm wondering if anyone on this list can tell me the tracklisting for it, and if it is/isn't the same as Grassroots 005 (The Moody Mann EP). All you Europeans with this record dusting in your crates now have your chance to be of assistance. Matt
Oldham -VS- The Techno Laity
The caliber of a person's criticism will reveal whether or not (s)he has the cognition, erudition, and rhetoric to criticize Jeff Mills, or anyone else. Starting a subgenre of art and spawning an army of clones is not necessarily a substitute for critical ability. There is no one on this list (or anywhere) who warrants impunity from any sort of articulate, reasoned criticism. Anyone who can contradict this without pejorative braggadocio, the floor is yours. UR and KDJ - What?
I was just about to try and book tickets for this, but I think I'm going to pass. My condolences to those who did and now have to wait and see. If it turns out they agreed to do this gig, then blew it off, I vote everyone on the list buy ten copies of the Sony Jaguar remix to support a company that delivers on promises. Matt
Re: Moodymann
Argh my more interesting mail didn't go through. Whatever. But I do need to ask: Does anyone know if the Moodymann feature in Jockey Slut is online? Thanks Matt
RE: [313] Two Moody Q's
Yeah - couldn't agree with you more that the instrumental version is superior. Must say, I'd like it even more if he took the keys out. It starts with that incredible dark, brooding beat, very different for him, then runs into the keys which seem a little out of place. But the vocals seemed very out of place. Oh well. Matt
Re: KDJ discography
Yes, the Soul City 12" is listed on the discog, under other releases. It is "Soul Sounds #1" with Winter Breeze, Yesterdays, etc. etc. It's one of his best EPs (next to KDJ7, KDJ24 and KDJ25). Kenny's first EP was the "Moody Mann EP" done as Kenny Dixon Jr. featuring Norma Jean Bell that came out on New Jersey's Grassroots records, a label I have never heard of aside from this release (which is GR005). This, as far as I'm concerned, is about the rarest Detroit EP I've ever heard of. His next EP was the "Moody Traxx" EP on KDJ. That's KDJ1. KDJ1 and KDJ2 are records I've never seen for sale/trade. It's likely that I'll live another fifty years and go to my grave not hearing those at the rate of success I've had trying to find copies. I've heard there will be another round of KDJ repressings. Anyone who knows him, please feel free to pass along these suggestions: 1) No more one-sided repressings. 2) Do the pressings with the original tracks. 3) Repress the records that haven't ever been repressed (KDJ1, 2, and 9 especially). 4) Put some of the white label only tracks (KDJ19, 23, and 28 whites) on the repressings. 5) Repress the damn first Three Chairs already. BTW, anybody out there who wants to drop their KDJ28 white label on me, let me know. I'll trade just about anything in my non-KDJ/Theo collection. Matt
Two Moody Q's
1) Um saw a copy of "Analog Live" today: does everyone else's copy look like this one? The one I saw looked like a one-sided white label with only one track that had label art looking like a pasted on xerox. I'd tell you how it sounded, but the vinyl had all sorts of pockmarks and indentations, causing the stylus to bounce around like a lowrider. I heard the first white label for this had two tracks, so evidently things have changed. Please tell me there are copies out there that play without skipping and I just saw a mispressing. 2) Can anyone tell me the tracklisting on the old "Black Sunday" 12" that was the promo for Mahogany Brown? Does it have a track exclusive to the album, or is it just "Black Sunday"? I thought it had an exclusive, but then I heard it was one-sided (which wouldn't surprise me - what the heck is with Kenny and these one-sided records!) Thanks, Matt
Re: KDJ
Can anyone tell me why the catalog number I just saw for the new KDJ is KDJ28C? Does anyone have a different groove number? Also, any guesses as to why he didn't keep the B-side from the white label on the full release? What does that B sound like? Matt
RE: [313] Moodymann
Man, I can't wait to hear this track. There are a lot of people out there who, aside from Theo and KDJ, don't buy any new techno anymore. I'm one of them. I've saved so much money and heartache So, children, the moral of the story is, don't support crappy music, and your lives will be better. And you can also buy Gas' "Pop", that's fine stuff. Matt
RE: [313] norma jean bell
"Baddest Bitch" was originally PAND1, with Moodymann's mix, which is of course the only version of this track you need. It then reappeared as F047, with Moody's mix, the original mix, and two mixes I doubt anyone else on this list cares about. Then came F 047R, which featured the Motorbass mix which lots of European DJ's got into (which was repressed on the F 100 CD.) If anybody has a PAND 1 they want to trade let me know, I don't like having any records on F Communications in my collection. On this note, does anyone have a Pandamonium discography? I know they're up to release 19 with the last Moody EP, but I only know of maybe ten or eleven of those releases. Matt
Warning: Stuart Hale
Warning: Please use caution dealing with Stuart Hale. I have yet to receive money from this person. He has not responded to public postings. He has not responded to recent mailings. He has owed me money since August. When will I learn? I send records before I receive money, and this is what I get. Matt
DEMF Track ID
What is that gorgeous track KDJ is playing in the late 40:00's (up until around 50:00). Hook seems to be "You live your life" or something. Praise God. This is beautiful. Matt
Re: [313] Jaguar in UK charts
For my money, the best thing about Jaguar is the cover. Looks like No Limit does Detroit. It's got those letters for Jaguar and everything. Too bad it doesn't come in a transparent red case with ads for more UR 12"s in the booklet. Matt
KDJ Info
First of all, thanks to Stephen @ twoplayer, who has thus far managed to tolerate me, the KDJ label/Moodymann discography is up at: http://twoplayer.net/kdj And it is missing a couple remixes right now (spec. BP13, F 047, PAND 1, PAND 4), but otherwise is all I know about Mr. Dixon's records. Anyone who has info on whether or not there were white labels for 14, 16, and 25 (not a white label that just was 23/25 like the full release) or any 12"s I might've missed, please give me a holler! Secondly, KDJ has a new 12" en route! KDJ 28 - one-sided - "Analog Life". There were white labels handed out at shows called "Analog Live b/w Rehersals 8/8/00": we can only hope the B-side is on as well (even if it sucks, because otherwise I'll be tracking down the stupid white label.) I haven't gotten Forevernevermore yet, I don't live in England, I have to wait. Is "Tribute" the full version of "Tribute to the Soul We Lost" (KDJ3)? Anyone figured out which tracks are in the "medley"? "Winter Breeze", I hope. Does anyone know if Kenny has any other really old pre-KDJ 12"s? I had never heard of the Grassroots 12" in seven years of techno collecting until about a month ago. Also, can anyone out there give me the info on KDJ 1 and KDJ 2's untitled tracks? Do any of them reappear on later releases? Is "Moody Traxx" the same EP as the Grassroots EP, just released by KDJ? Finally, I personally need KDJ 1, 2, 3 (first press), 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 20, and Intangible 509 (the Emotional Content 12".) I have ART CD's and 12"s, Likemind/B12 12"s, Plaid's rarest, the Scoobs 12" (two mixes not on Trainer), and loads more to trade if anyone can offer me those records. Peace, Matt
Moodymann: Forevernevermore
Is this album available yet? Who has it, and can provide a tracklisting? Any analysis? Has Moodymann _finally_ put out a CD that shows what he is capable of and has all his good past tracks? I gotta know. I also found this tracklisting for the Japanese pressing of Forevernevermore on the Toy's Factory web page: 01. Meanwhile Back Home 02. Wednesday Night People 03. KDJ Logo 04. The Set Up 05. Don't You Want My Love 06. Your Sweet Lovin 07. The Thief 08. Tribute 09. Forevernevermore 10. (Unlisted tracks and melody) Can anyone contrast this to the UK Peacefrog pressing, or perhaps shed light on the unlisted tracks? So far as I can guess, "The Set Up" is from KDJ21, "Tribute" would be "Tribute (To the Soul We Lost)" from KDJ03, "Forevernevermore" the same from the 12", "Don't You Want My Love" the version from PF095-1, and I _hope_ "The Thief" is "Ya Blessin' Me" from that 12", NOT "The Thief That Stole My Sad Days": I can't believe KDJ would put that track on over "Ya Blessin' Me" (heck, I can't believe he wouldn't put "Ya Blessin' Me" on the CD, that's his best track!) Glad to see "Tribute", his best uptempo track, not happy to see "The Set Up": was hoping he was moving away from that downtempo material that I did not like on his first two CD's. And no "Shades of Jae", "Joy Pt. II", "I Feel Joy", "Small Black Church", "The Dancer", "Amerika", "Black Mahogany", "The City", etc. etc. Could this be true? Matt
Re: Moodymann in NYC
Moodymann was passing out records? Oh no. Someone please supply a tracklisting and label # on this, unless it is the Peacefrog 095-1 promo ("Don't You Want My Love" b/w "Me and My People's Eyes"). I finally get the Grassroots 12" info, think the damn KDJ discography is done, and then Matt
This Grows Tiresome
The monthly tradition continues If anyone knows Johanna Thomson, please tell her to send me and everyone else she may owe records our damn stuff already. E-mails sent to her don't bounce, but I get no response. I'm beginning to think I have a better chance of being in Bill Gates' will than receiving my remaining items from her. Matt
Re: Discography Webspace
Almost finished up this KDJ discography anybody out there want to put it on their website? Figure it's a valuable resource, considering there is next to no information about this man on the Internet and his records barely exist. Also, can anyone supply the tracklisting for KDJ001 ("Moody Trax")? Also, anyone who has scans of the labels of the 12"s/discs (I have no scanner) is welcome to send them my way. Thanks, Matt
Re: Theo Parrish
WhoopsI deleted the Theo Parrish titled messages recently that seemed to imply there were tracklistings inside (without reading them). Have our hard working scholars determined tracklistings for the two CDR's? If so, can somebody please e-mail them to me? Thanks, Matt
Re: Claude Young Japanese DJ Mix
In case anyone is interested, I found the tracklisting for Claude Young's "DJF 1100" on the following webpage: http://www.sme.co.jp/Music/Info/SonyTechno/feature/9912/djf/r_info_bd.html As far as I can tell, the DJF is being billed as the successor to the famous "Mix-Up" series, "DJF" stands for "DJ Friendship" or maybe "DJ Friendly", and previous volumes were Westbam (DJF 125), Carl Cox (DJF 250), Takkyu Ishino (DJF 400), and DJ Hell (DJF 750.) Matt
Re: (313) Let's Talk Techno (Responses, Act I)
Wow! 40+ responses. That made my day. To any artists out there, I don't mean disrespect, only stating my personal ideas about my favorite records. Don't mean to offend. Im on the clock, here are my defenses: Re: Herbie Hancock, Bob Marley, Parliament, etc. Jazz, reggae, soul. This is a specifically electronic list. Great artists, but in totally different genres. And, BTW, I think King Tubby has a lot more in common with modern electronics then Bob Marley, and not to start yet another debate, but I have gotten more from Yabby Yous 2CD retrospective than every other reggae/dub record Ive heard in my life put together (Congos, Burning Spear, Horace Andy, etc.) That might be my favorite record. Re: Juan Atkins I love Juan Atkins. I dont want to seem like Im disrespecting Juan Atkins, and Im probably the only person in the 313 world who thinks this, but I never cared for his music. He was a great influence on people to _MAKE_ electronic music: I dont think he, musically, had any influence on Derrick May, who is the man all techno producers probably concede started their careers. Derrick might not agree with me, but I hear no trace of Juan Atkins on Strings of Life or anything thereafter: Derrick was just so far ahead of the game. For me, Atkins Model 500 material sounds like the cover art to Classics looks. He doesnt have (for me) the emotional impact of his prominent predecessors (Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, even Yellow Magic Orchestra), contemporaries (Afrika Bambaata), or followers (May, Craig, Banks, et al.) And Juans best record, I think, is The Infiniti Collection, but when you judge that record against what UR, Carl, Mark and Tom, B12, the Orb, et al. I dont think it is as strong. However, if this were a top 100 list, both Infiniti CDs would be on it, which means Juan is still in the top 1% of producers, but I dont think any of his CDs belong in my top 50. Juan has been a great mentor, a great ambassador, and most other things for techno, and deserves a great deal of admiration and praise for those accomplishments, but I think his music is not on the level of the artists I mentioned. Just my thoughts, I encourage everyone who hasnt heard Juan Atkins to buy his discs and make your own assessment: if you havent heard him, you are missing out on a very important piece in the techno puzzle, and I dont mean to question his historical importance nor the fact that he would/will be pre-requisite listening in any Techno 101 class. As my music teacher once said, it doesnt matter if _you_ like it. So check Juan out. Black Dog: Bytes I used to love this album. I still think many of the hooks are brilliant. However, I think every track on the album has the same structure: open with a great hook, go into a (to my ears) lukewarm middle section, end with the hook briefly again. Listening to this album recently, all I can hear are those middle sections, and its gotten to the point where I cant even listen to this anymore. Again, this is as important to be familiar with as Juan Atkins material (Ken, Ed, Andy dont be mad at me), but I dont think it stands the test of repeated listening. I could be wrong. If youre a DJ, you need this record, because the hooks work phenomenally in sets. All other 313 fans will probably still need to own this album. Me? Im jaded. I dont like this record anymore. Claude Young: DJ Kicks, Mills picks, and the high % of DJ records My feeling remains that techno is a DJ format, especially hard techno and tracks that arent gifted with much more than a slightly catchy hook. A good DJ can make a set out of mostly good, not stellar tracks Id never buy otherwise into something brilliant (in fact, almost all the DJ albums I have do this.) In fact, DJ mix albums are usually much more interesting because, lets face it, techno is repetetive, and if the groove isnt insanely good, who wants 5:00 of it? (KDJ is the only modern producer whose full tracks (his good ones, that is) dont seem long at 9:00, but in fact, not long enough (I listened to that Misled 12 like forty times the first day I got it.)) This is my problem, for example, with most of the Mills CDs. As a DJ, Jeff knows that concision (if thats not a word, it should be) is the key, and he displays this unbelievably well on Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo which is one of the greatest records ever in techno (would make my top 5.) Most of the other DJ mix discs do a similar thing. The reason I dont include the other Mills discs is because: 1) I think Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo sums up his material (and the rest of the hard techno scene) far better and 2) I think choosing not to cut down the tracks to approx. 2:30 or less in length on all his other discs hurts home listening. As for Claudes (isnt it 1100) DJF 1100 I saw a tracklisting on Sonys site, it looks pretty good, Ill try to get a hold of it. I still think his DJ Kicks volume will likely belong on the list, that is a gr

Responses coming on my previous thread Meantime, does anyone know: 1) The tracklisting for KDJ's new CD. 2) When the KDJ label is going to get another mass repressing? For some reason I thought they did this annually. I still need far too many 12"s. Matt
Let's Talk Techno
Heres something to spark some much needed critical analysis on this list: if you had to name the fifty best AND most important electronic CDs of the past 25-odd years, what would they be? Here are my picks. Ive been working on this for a while; believe me, I have considered most albums people are going to point out are absent. However, Id love to discuss why you think that record is important. And yes, I do know Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Black Dog, and some others are not on here, and I think I can defend my decisions. -- Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works, Volume 2 (Warp) Autechre: Chiastic Slide (Warp) Balil: Parasight (Rising High) Basic Channel (BCP/EFA) Biosphere: Substrata (All Saints) Boards of Canada: Music Has the Right to Children (Matador/Warp/Skam) Brian Eno: Ambient 1 - Music For Airports (EG) Brian Eno & Harold Budd: Ambient 2 - The Plateaux of Mirrors (EG) B12: Electro-Soma (Warp/AI) B12: Prelude Part 1 (B12) Claude Young: DJ Kicks (Stud!o K7) Carl Craig: Landcruising (Blanco Y Negro) Derrick May: Innovator (Transmat) Derrick May: Mix-Up, Volume 5 (Sony Japan) Detroit Escalator Co.: Soundtrack [313] (Ferox) Dettinger: Intershop (Kompakt) DJ Rolando: The Aztec Mystic Mix (Underground Resistance) DJ Shadow: Endtroducing (MoWax) Fumiya Tanaka: I Am Not a DJ (Sony Japan) Fumiya Tanaka: Mix-Up, Volume 4 (Sony Japan) Future Sound of London: Lifeforms (Astralwerks) Gas: Pop (Mille Plateaux) Giorgio Moroder: From Here to Eternity (Repertoire) Global Communication: 76:14 (Dedicated) Harold Budd w/Brian Eno: The Pearl (EG) I-F: Mixed Up in the Hague, Volume 1 (Panama) Isolee: Rest (Playhouse) Jeff Mills: Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo (React) John Beltran: Earth & Nightfall (R&S/Distance) Kraftwerk: Autobahn (EMI) Kraftwerk: Trans-Europe Express (Capitol) Kruder & Dorfmeister: The K&D Sessions (Stud!o K7) Monolake: Interstate (ml/i) Moodymann: A Silent Introduction (Planet E) Negativland: U2 (SST) Paperclip People: The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich (Planet E) Pete Namlook: Air I&II (Instinct) Placid Angels: The Cry (Peacefrog) Plug: Drum n Bass For Papa (Nothing/Blue Planet) Reload: A Collection of Short Stories (Infonet) Sterac: The Secret Life of Machines (100% Pure) Tangerine Dream: Phaedra (Virgin) Tangerine Dream: Rubycon (Virgin) Terrence Parker: Tragedies of a Plastic Soul Junkie (Stud!o K7) Tetsu Inoue: World Receiver (Instinct) The KLF: Chill Out (TVT/Wax Trax) The Martian: LBK-6251876 (Red Planet) Theo Parrish: Sound Signature Sounds (Sound Signature) The Orbs Adventures Through the Ultraworld (Island) The Philosophy of Sound and Machine (A.R.T./Rephlex) Underground Resistance: Revolution For Change (Network) -- This list is _far_ from finished. Someone posted this before, but I lost the message. Is there ANYWHERE in Montreal one can get things like the new Theo CD, the new Brinkmann CD, etc. etc. Matt
Thomas Brinkmann new CD
Hey there - Anyone have a tracklisting for the new Thomas Brinkmann: Rosa CD? I hear it compiles his Ernst material. I was really hoping he would do this as I stopped buying Ernst 12"s (and most vinyl altogether) about halfway into the series. Also if anyone wants to add their opinion as to how well the CD reflects the best of the 12" series I'd like to hear that. Please tell me "Karin 1" made it on. Also, does anyone have tracklistings for the upcoming Jedi Knights CD retrospective (hope it has some old EV/SYM stuff, don't you?) and the new Moodymann CD? Just like to add to KDJ that if what I heard is true and the CD will be a mixed collection (hopefully meaning lots of tracks clocking in at the 3:00 or less mark) I think that's a fantastic idea, as that not only gives the disc more tracks, but also only gives us the best part of the track. While we're at it, anyone have a clue as to tracklistings for either "Live In Detroit 1999" or "Methods of Movement 2000", or perhaps at least can reveal some of the soul tracks (particularly the ones that have the hooks live "I'm your sandman", "A thousand kisses from you is never enough", etc. etc.) Thanks all Matt
Re: OUTRAGE
What's particularly amazing about this (now the second time UR seems to be involved in sampling/covering issues with a major label) is the majors managed to find probably the techno producers most opposed to such practicesthe irony here is enormous. If nothing else, it should be "consolation" for Mad Mike to know that his tracks are so good that even cover versions and trance versions using his samples are making national charts. Yikes. I suppose the original "Sonic Destroyer" would be a bit too undiluted for mass consumption anyway. Matt
Another Month, Another Posting...
Is anyone else out there still waiting on items from Johanna Thomson? This person continually amazes me. I have never had to deal with anyone, in five years of Internet trading, remotely like this. It's getting to the point where all I can do is laugh. Anyway, if anyone out there knows how to get in touch with her, please get her to check her e-mail and contact me and any other people waiting on items from her. It's a shame that international record dealing makes you almost entirely dependent on the other person's whim to send things, as short of spending thousands of dollars and loads of time, there are almost no other alternatives. Detroit: Past and Present
In a message dated 8/14/00 8:15:43 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << List some of the great Detroit techno artists' albums and you'll likely see Landcruising, Silent Phase, both Nighttime Worlds, The Collective, and the list goes on (hard to cite the ones that grace my collection now b/c they're all packed up). Then there are other albums like Neil Olivera's Detroit Escalator Company - Soundtrack 313 that couldn't possibly fit better into the Detroit state of mind, if not including a single uptempo track. The narrow definition of techno doesn't do justice to the distiction between "ambience" and downtempo Detroit which properly occupy different spheres by and large. Claude Young's Multiplicity of Zeros and Ones could as easilly be classified as "ambient" by someone who doesn't listen to a lot of Detroit as the trance guy at the local club referring to Basic Channel as trance. Seems to me the term "great" is being tossed about somewhat carelessly here. Stacey Pullen, Octave One, Claude Young and Robert Hood have had their moments (in fact Claude has his excellent "DJ Kicks", which isn't really an original album, and Robert Hood has the good, if too close to formulaic, "Minimal Nation"), but I would make objections to them being placed in the class of Carl Craig, one of the best Detroit techno producers. Carl has had, over his career, both a depth and bredth of vision unrivaled in his native city or anywhere else on the techno landscape. It took him a few tries to get out of Derrick May's shadow, at least in a production sense, but he has done it, and deserves respect as being an innovator, an elevator and one of techno's best ambassadors. I realize that Detroit producers seem all about unity, and brotherhood prohibits decent criticism, so I'm speaking as someone from the East Coast who just likes good music. I think Carl Craig exists in a Detroit stratosphere with just May and Banks, and their only equals that I have heard are people like Basic Channel, Global Communication, and B12. So when we refer to "great" albums, let's talk about techno's absolute best, rather than above-average efforts, because in the long run, can an above-average efforts mean anything in two, three, five, or ten years? I guess that's a personal decision Meanwhile detractors will claim Detroit has fallen off. Albums take more focus, time and God knows they seem to take longer to actually hit the shelf than the 12 inches do. So if maturing and mature Detroit artists take the time to focus on an album and reduce their other output in the meantime, not only does it decrease the number of "techno" tracks on the end product while they flex their breadth of taste, it decreases the output and the number of releases DJs are likely to pick up. >> There's no point though, I think, in claiming Detroit has fallen off, because it has always had rough patches, and there have always been only a handful of truly exceptional producers working. The reason people who don't choose to look into the past to assess the present find the current Detroit "fallen off" is because there isn't a flood of records coming from the scene anymore, and the Detroit sound isn't new. However, the Three Chairs (Theo, KDJ, and Rick Wilhite) all are doing some very interesting work in tech-house, and while that may not be "new", it is certainly unique and is helping to advance the platform. I'd say those three are about as good as anyone in Detroit's past. Carl and Mike are still working, and still have their moments of sheer brilliance, and DJ Rolando of course had the sensational "Jaguar" and a great mix disc. I think it's good there isn't a deluge of mediocre discs flooding out like there used to be: saves vinyl for rock stars' pants. As for decreasing the output to DJ'stechno producers made hundreds of cool tracks with just some basic electronic machines in the old days; the guitar has six strings and two dozen frets, people have been doing things with that for a whole century. If DJ's can't make magic with thousands and thousands of tracks, what are we supposed to think of them? If Mills really did say something similar to he's being working with a few hundred records for ten years, I think he is right on. It's very easy for lackluster DJ's (and there are loads of them) to just complain about what they don't have. The DJ medium's capacity has hardly been explored. Anyway, it is the UK techno scene which has fallen off, not Detroit. But we'll talk about that another time. Matt

In a message dated 8/14/00 1:11:23 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Definitely a 'complete' album from start to finish (as opposed to the _More Songs..._ kind of compilation of tracks). One of my favourite Carl Craig releases. >> The best Carl Craig release by a long shot, and the only true album to ever come out from one of Detroit's true "Trinity" of top producers (May, Craig, Banks). Seems to me Carl is coming up with an aural picture of a night drive's mental state. I used to listen to this album often cruising around at night, and he totally got it right. It's definitely the only CD Carl released that is strong start to finish that is not interspersed with various experiments or less emphatic tracks, in my opinion, and it also shows Carl taking a step beyond the dance floor: the 69 and Paperclip People aliases have lots of great tracks, but they don't often break out of dance/DJ mode. This release does, and constantly. It also shows Carl taking a step beyond Derrick MayI don't think it is quite as good as "Innovator", but I think that unlike "More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art" this album goes into territory Derrick May has yet to explore. It's one of a very small handful of techno albums out there that sounds like a full, coherent album, rather than a collection of likeminded tracks. Often times the track collections are better than albums, but it is nice to change it up from time to time. Anywaythis is one of the top five Detroit CD's, essential. need help on KDJ/Moodymann discog (long)
Since there doesn't seem to be a KDJ discography extant anywhere on the web, and I think one would be very useful, I'm trying to assemble one. I don't, however, have close to all his 12"s. So I need some 313 experts to assist. What I have is below. Re: Detroit records
This is a nice thread. 1) The rarest record I own (of all records) is the Buka / Cicciolina split 7", which has to also be the coolest record I own. It's a split 7" between a Croatian noise/grind band doing odd rock music and a bootlegged side of Italian ex-porn star / member of government (?) Cicciolina performing "Sexy Porno Star" (disco) live with presumably the Buka guys talking dirty in some Balkan tongue over the recording they're making. The cover is _extremely_ vulgar. I guess there were something like 50 or less of these given out to friends of Dave / Psycho Mania records out of Scotland and friends of Buka. I also have a near complete Patareni discography (making me one of about a hundred people on Earth who know who the Patareni are and one of I think three outside of Croatia who have almost all their records.) 2) The rarest Detroit techno record I own is probably Plaid's "Scoobs In Columbia" 12" on GPR. I guess there are only 200 of those, very rare and very cool as well. The rarest truly awesome record I own is "The Philosophy of Sound and Machine" CD which is limited to something like 500 and is one of the biggest treasures in IDM/313. I also have all that old Detroit and Black Dog stuff that most other fanatics have but no crazy rare but crappy white labels. 3) Favorite record? Argh. Tough one. Favorite 12" is Underground Resistance's "Punisher". Favorite CD is probably "Innovator" but the Martian, Depth Charge 1, Autobahn and 76:14 all come very close. Matt

In a message dated 6/16/00 4:41:34 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: “Maybe but IMO, UR tracks are always tied quite heavily to the 12" release they appear on. You're not just buying UR tracks - you're buying the UR package - the Unknown Writer text, the run-off messages, and the music. Releases like _Galaxy 2 Galaxy_ are like albums in themselves - splitting individual tracks off onto compilations (whether CD or vinyl) might not be desireable. I appreciate that there are people who only buy and listen to CDs but its kind of like videogames - if you want to play Mario, you buy a Nintendo. You want to listen to UR, you buy a record deck.” Many people don’t have turntables. For many people it is simply not a feasible option. They cost a lot of money, usually require a sound system to set up, and are really only useful these days for fans of indie rock, old jazz and rock albums, and techno enthusiasts. For those who would not devote most of their disposable income to techno, CD’s are the best format. They usually have more select tracks and are much more cost effective for the amount of music one finds on them, not to mention being a much more versatile format (you can use your portable disc player, your computer disc drive, your stereo, the CD player in your car, etc.) and a much less exclusionary format by virtue of being widespread. When I play Derrick May for someone I can point them to “Innovator”. Basic Channel or Maurizio? There are two home listening oriented discs from those producers (and BC seem very opposed to CD's in general, I’d say more so than UR). Red Planet? Drexciya? Black Dog (and now Plaid with the much applauded “Trainer”)? As One? B12? Model 500/Infiniti? Kevin Saunderson? Moodymann? Theo Parrish? All these artists have somewhat readily available discs that provide a great overview for those who aren’t interested in twenty 12”s from a certain producer. In fact, every truly exceptional techno producer I think of now except Nuron has a CD out that at least shows a portion of their best material. UR’s best representation of its old 12” tracks was “Revolution For Change”. Rather than simply reissue that, I’m proposing a 2CD that contains all the great old tracks and some of the great post-1992 tracks UR has made, to provide a definitive source for casual UR enthusiasts or new UR fans not brave enough to commit hundreds of dollars to vinyl they’ve never heard. Bottom line? It doesn’t matter what I think. I’m not UR, I can’t make the call. Your opinions are as valid as mine. But I think your opinions are in direct opposition to UR’s message. After all, Mad Mike seems very big on the idea of music breaking down barriers and crossing boundaries: walls like race, nationality, birthdate, religion and language are all things UR are trying to break down to make their music universal. It seems to me with the many compilation appearances and the many CD’s featuring lots of old UR tracks that Mad Mike is also interested in breaking down the walls of what one’s home stereo contains and how much money one can afford to spend on music, and those are walls I think a 2CD retrospective of UR would smash. It would also smash the worst block of all: ignorance, in this case ignorance of some of the best music of the modern era, not because listeners chose to ignore it but because it might be inaccessible to them. I also believe UR’s tracks are not so limited that they only work in the context of one 12”. I think taking the very best of them and putting them together is a logical and crucial step. Mad Mike: please consider doing this sort of a release! After all, with Sony Germany covering “Jaguar” there is a huge audience that would love these UR tracks, the originals. Let’s have UR do it on a killer release that is top to bottom composed of killer tracks. Matt

UR Vote
Curious to see what others think (as I've noticed often everybody seems to agree on what the best tracks are). Let's have some comments: what are the best five UR 12"s? My picks (Must Owns): The Final Frontier 12" (UR003) After "Sonic", which had one phenomenal track ("Eye of the Storm") and three that don't quite match it, UR drops "The Final Frontier", which goes two for three, with "Base Camp Alpha 808" and "The Final Frontier" being two of their coolest very early tracks that still show lots of Detroit influence before the UR individual sound kicked in. The Punisher 12" (UR017) Easy pick: my favorite UR track and another track ("Method of Force") that's almost as good. The best electro/techno anthem I've ever heard. Message to the Majors 12" (UR023) Another really good 12" that has only two songs (I'd rather have two awesome songs than two awesome songs and two filler tracks), two versions of the fantastic UR anti-corporate hard techno album. Massive. Galaxy 2 Galaxy 2x12" (UR025) I think anyone who's heard this will probably agree with me. Very much in the Red Planet style of super deep strings and emotionally saturated Roland overload. My my. Codebreaker 12" (UR038) Sign of a new direction for a mature UR: very interesting stuff that seems like UR's answer to "Minimal Nation". The next question: with "Revolution For Change" out of print and Rolando's disc being more of a mix CD than a proper retrospective, don't we all agree a UR 2CD "best of the 12"s" sort of thing is well warranted? This is maybe one of techno's best back catalogs, and with Drexciya making "The Quest" the time has come for more people to get exposure to the best UR tracks and for those of us who want to have a great record to recommend to friends rather than saying "Get this 12" for this track, this 12" for this track", etc. I'd say this could be a good tracklisting: Eye of the Storm (UR002) Base Camp Alpha 808 (UR003) The Final Frontier (UR003) Beauty of Decay (UR004) (although maybe "Adrenalin" as well?) Riot (UR010) (maybe one more track from this) Sonic Destroyer (UR013.5) The Punisher (UR017) Method of Force (UR017) The Fury (UR018) (haven't heard the B-side "Cyclone" - as good?) Death Star (UR022) Message to the Majors A (UR023) Message to the Majors B (UR023) Ain't No Sunshine (The Sign) (UR024) Twista (The Dance) (UR024) Journey of the Dragons (UR025) Astral Apache [Star Stories] (UR025) (probably more as well, I love this record) The Final Frontier Part II (UR028) The Illuminator (UR033) Codebreaker A (UR038) First Galactic Baptist Church (UR042) Jaguar (UR049) I'm sure there are a couple tracks from the 12"s I forgot that are as good, and I haven't heard any of the SID 12"s too much, but I'd imagine a 2CD that had the best 20-25 UR tracks would be close to if not the best techno CD out there (next to "Innovator" and the Red Planet disc). Re: [313] 'Trying to recreate something that's long gone'
In a message dated 6/15/00 7:30:17 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << If Bukem namedrops old 313 records, is he just 'trying to prove he was down'? I think he _was_ down, played those tunes when they were released, then went on to create his own style. Tunes like 'Demon's Them' and 'Horizons' are serious landmarks in deep dance music. To dismiss them in terms of gear is like slagging Red Planet tunes for always using old Roland kit. Can you blame the originator of a powerful cliche for their clones? Even some tunes that I like - Maas' "Juan is the Teacher" f'rinstance, or Ian O'Brian's "Mad Mike Disease" - leave me wondering if they're helping or hurting the music with their fetishistic recreation of the sounds of Detroit c.a. 1989 or 1992. Anthony Rother is fun, but do we really need another person rehashing a blueprint that was drawn almost 20 years ago? So respect to those pushing the music forward. 99% of us on this list aren't from Detroit. Respect to the legacy of the past and the integrity of the present. After all, Juan Atkins didn't decide to make Motown remakes. That moment was long gone. >> This post is good, but I want to just cement the ideas expounded: the bottom line is that whatever the time, whatever the scene, there are always a couple producers who are simply much, much better than everyone else. Great producers are generally not satisfied with living in the shadow of others. Bukem (whose early stuff is too good to be associated with almost every other jungle record, save perhaps the Chameleon 12") is on point making that assessment. It's one thing for early material to show huge signs of influence before a producer discovers their valid individual ideas, it's another to show no signs of innovation or elevation and just make "Strings" Lite. Seems to me the producers working today who will look in five years as Nuron, B12 and Global Communication look compared to even BDP or As One today are Isolee, Brinkmann, Theo Parrish and KDJ, all of whom are (forgive this awful expression) adding an exciting new voice to techno's continuing discussion. Detroit, BTW, is not "long gone" (I think we can all agree on that). I'd rather listen to Red Planet or "Innovator" than almost anything else made in the electronic genre, up to and including today, because it still sounds fresh and energetic, not to mention tremendously deep. Heck, "Autobahn" is 26 years old, and that's still one of the best discs. Good art keeps working long after the scene is over and its mediocre practitioners have long since been forgotten or relegated to footnotes. A question for everyone, since we're speaking of Bukem. Looking at all his CD's, there are always phenomenal Bukem tracks that are surrounded by the work of his imitators. I hear people complain about the non-Bukem tracks on "Logical Progression" et al. I realize Bukem was supporting the scene and his friends, but is supporting your imitators worse than criticizing others for doing it, or is it justified on the grounds of trying to start a scene, a label, and getting your friends involved in an underground music alliance? Regardless, I think we'd all love a nice CD compiling Bukem's ten or so best tracks with no one else's material on it: that would be excellent. Matt

I didn't really go for Techno 2 very much, perhaps because I've never been a fan of "I Believe" so I only really liked the Psyche track (the MK, Infiniti and Vice) are alright. The first comp has tons of stuff that's appeared on the Atkins, May, and Saunderson retrospectives. Anyone else think "Big Fun" doesn't sound quite the same these days? Equinox, the Beginning: Nite and Da CD, Buzz (Belgium) Urban Tribe: Covert Action Carl Craig with Sarah Gregory: As Time Goes By (Sitting Under a Tree) Never on Sunday: The Journey Carl Craig: No More Words Carl Craig: Suspiria Sarah Gregory: As Time Goes By (Sitting Under a Tree) Open House featuring Placid Angels: Aquatic Again a phenomenal track by John Beltran, but this track appears on "Earth & Nightfall". I'd say the other Carl Craig stuff sounds like very old, early experiments, none of the punch of say "My Machines" or the realization of "Landcruising". Another decent record that isn't essential: what's really strange about this CD is they could've probably fit the four Retroactive 12"s (minus the Sarah Gregory 12") onto one disc and yet they only put about a half hour of tracks on (and the best track from Retroactive, UR's, does not appear). Virtual Sex CD, Buzz (Belgium) Bango: Mystical Adventures Neuropolitique: Bananagate Stefan Robbers: Foreign Dimensions As One: Shambala Rhythim Is Rhythim: Icon Redcell: In Version Carl Craig: At Les Lark: Tedra Very good comp for the May, Craig and Redcell tracks. The other tracks are all good but I don't think in the same league as those three legendary producers. I'd say these ten CD's provide an overview to Detroit and are maybe the ten best discs out of the Motor City. These discs are all incredible and have little to no filler tracks. Derrick May: Innovator 2CD (Transmat) Model 500: Classics (R&S) Kevin Saunderson: Faces and Phases 2CD (Planet E) John Beltran: Earth & Nightfall (R&S) Underground Resistance: Revolution For Change (Network) The Martian: LBK-6251876 (Red Planet) Carl Craig: Landcruising (Blanco Y Negro) Drexciya: The Quest (Submerge) Moodymann: A Silent Introduction (Planet E) Theo Parrish: Sound Signature (Sound Signature) They should all be fairly easy to find with the exception of the Underground Resistance album. You could approximate that release with any of these CD's: X-101: Sonic Destroyer (Tresor) Origins of a Sound (Submerge) Depth Charge 1 (Submerge) DJ Rolando: The Aztec Mystic Mix (Underground Resistance) But these are all either later UR or mainly different material from the "Revolution For Change" full-length. Still awesome, but different (no "Punisher"). Having these CD's other than "Revolution" is like having a good English translation of Baudelaire: it's different and excellent, but it's not the original. I don't think there are any purely Detroit comps that have zero filler. The best Detroit comps are Retrotechno, Panic In Detroit, Virtual Sex, Relics and Origins of a Sound. Four of those are very, very out of print, and even these comps aren't top to bottom awesome (but very, very close). Just for the record, I can't think of any compilation that doesn't have at least one track I don't like. Intergalactic Beats and the Philosophy of Sound and Machine are my two favorite comps, but the former has the Hani track and the latter the Twelve Days of Night, neither of which I care for. But just maybe the compilation assemblers were like the monks drawing the Book of Kells: that they always included one flaw so as to leave perfection for God alone. Or maybe not. Matt

For everyone's information: Johanna's e-mail account was down, which is why people haven't been hearing back from her. If anyone wants to hear my happiness/not happiness over the three purchases I've conducted with her, feel free to drop me a note if you're curious as to what you might get in dealing with her. BTW, she also just moved, which might explain some of the confusion in her current sales. Also I don't think it's Mark's collection. Not to take away from Mr. Hawtin, but is it perhaps because he's white? After all, every other Detroit artist of note from that period is black. Atkins, May, Saunderson, Larkin, Banks, Craig, Mills, Hood, Deason, Baxter, Oldham, etc. etc. I like some of the old FUSE and Plus 8 stuff myself, but, you know, wouldn't Carl Craig or Mad Mike be a more appropriate choice? They seem to epitomize the Detroit sound both then and now and were originators, innovators and elevators throughout the past dozen years. Richie Hawtin started a couple years after these guys, wasn't as directly involved in the scene and as far as I can gather from this far away wasn't even liked by some of the people in Detroit, and most of his best early stuff as FUSE et al. seems indebted to Underground Resistance, Metroplex, Chicago acid, etc. That doesn't mean it is bad or his accomplishments should be doubted, but it does seem a stretch to call him a pioneerrather call him a skilled producer with good taste. Has anyone heard a new 12" from an artist called Lunar on the Stripe label out of the UK? I heard it compared to Red Planet. If true, that would be some good. Peace, Matt

SORRY I asked you to elaborate...it seems like a pretty big generalization and I think Jaguar is a great release for Rolando with many more to come from the city of Detroit by people like Dan Bell, Ritchie Hawtin, Anthony Shakir, The Planet-E crew, the Transmat Crew, Wild Planet...the list goes on and they have all been producing good music. >> I think what Alan is getting at is that the Detroit techno scene has stagnated, nobody is innovating anymore and there hasn't been a release in the past five years that stands up that well to the classic stuff done a long time ago, and also that most of the pre-eminent Detroit producers and musicians have moved past the early pure techno sound to a more hybridized thing (see Innerzone Orchestra, Model 500, etc.) You are right in your assertion that people are still making old school techno music in Detroit, but I think Alan is equally right in his that it is just more of the same. And compare current Transmat releases to old ones, compare Wild Planet, Shake, Hawtin, any modern Octave One or 430 West, etc. to Strings of Life, Night Drive, I Believe, Neurotic Behavior, any Red Planet or Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Minimal Nation, Just Another Chance, etc. It's not that people aren't making good music these days but it seems the music hasn't advanced like it did back when. I don't want to slight current producers, but I suppose I am. Also I would venture a guess that Alan notices the difference in quality and innovation much more than the rest of us, who were not fortunate enough to be intimately involved in the early days of the Detroit electronic revolution. I can only comment based on the records I hear, but people like Alan can comment based on the general vibe of the city and the musicians as well. Matt
(313) Even Longer Sale List
My last sale list was a smashing success, so I’ve decided to go for an encore performance. This time I’m mostly getting rid of stuff I got recently that I liked, but I think I have too much music to give it the attention it deserves. The rules: 1) Trades offered off my want list get credit equal to the $ amount listed. 2) I don’t respond to people offering to buy until trade offers are done. 3) I don’t want CDR’s. 4) Things not on my want list should be in a similar musical style. No guarantees. 5) You send first. People can vouch for me from the last time around. 6) CD’s are all $10 firm. 7) Vinyl is usually $7.50, but some rarer/more desirable things are more (ask). 8) I’m willing to describe what 12”s sound like if I have to (I wrote brief descriptions for each CD) but on both CD’s and 12”s I can’t be responsible if you still don’t like it or don’t agree with what I said. Check catalogs or websites for info if you’re unsure. 9) Please offer things off my trade list. I like good music. Tiebreakers: 1) For trades, items that are for me, not my friends (most things $40+). 2) For sales, people who want to order more stuff. Re: (313) Lowlands info?
I'm sure I'm going to be yet another person saying this, but YES! These are two of the absolute classic techno 12"s and probably some of the best the Lowlands has and will ever put up, and to be compiled on one CD...wow! I'm forgetting who it was but I'm fairly certain it was Stuart of 4th World/Diskono who at one point put it best when he said that these 12"s could make a grown man cry (and he said at the time they were his favorite 12"s, although I'm sure his taste has since changed). Some of the best techno from Europe in both the emotional and the technical sense, proving that the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. If you check the Eevolute website you can hear some Real Audio. Definitely as essential as Agenda 21, maybe even more so! Also considering these 12"s can fetch some exorbitant prices it's awesome to see Eevolute not only reissuing them on CD but keeping the CD in print (if other labels did even only the former). Matt
(313) Re: 100% Pure
Want to add on to what everyone is saying about 100% Pure - not an expert on Lowlands techno but I like a lot of their stuff as well as Eevolute/Stefan Robbers/Wladimir/et al. If any label needs to reissue some early EP's - they should. Anyway. While we're talking about them I wanted to ask about the "My Life In the Bush" and "Babies From Gong" EP's. Who is responsible for the production / how do these sound? Not familiar with them at all. Peace, Matt

The 4 tracks on Travelog have significantly moved on from the sound of the first two EP's and stand in stark contrast to the Uber-minimalism of the collaborative 'Blir' project. It would perhaps be a tad misleading to describe the pieces here as moving onto a more commercial domain - and yet there is a stunning, accessible warmth in these pieces missing from a lot of similarly aspiring product. Subtle harmonics drift, rubbing against the hypnotic percolating rhythm tracks. We cannot recommend this 12" enough. Pure essential. >> Really great to hear about this, as since we are talking about Gramm we should also mention SND who are certainly as intriguing and skilled. I was a huge fan of their first two 12"s on their own SND label and the CD on Mille Plateaux but the Blir 12" and the Shirt Trax CD were too minimal for me. The Blir 12" sounds like the square root of Studio 1. And if I remember correctly SND's self-released stuff is always very limited (300-ish), so everybody move fast and grab this one. If it really shows them progressing as much as the promo claims it will be a classic. Matt

(313) Re: (idm) Re: kit clayton :: moles * avocadoes :: [background]
Have to respectfully disagree with Lance on his assessment of the Submania Vs. Ekmoah 2x12", which for me sounds like minimalism without the selectivity or the driving pulse. It just sounds like a couple of electronic clacks given a kick. I think that in this style of music it is a very fine line, and I can't always discern exactly why some things are too minimal and others not (for example I love the first three SND releases but I hated the Blir and the Shirt Trax output). But whatever it is, Submania has it. Haven't heard Todd Sines, but if it sounds like DB-X that's a very good thing (DB-X being some of the best minimal techno, in my ears). Matt

He did two more 12"s with Open House before falling off the radar for a few years before reappearing with the stunning "Earth & Nightfall" full-length on R&S. He then released the equally amazing "Ten Days of Blue" full-length on Peacefrog and under the guise Placid Angels (which sums up his sound quite well) released one of the most acclaimed aesthetic deep tech-house full-lengths ever, "The Cry" also on Peacefrog. He then began to branch out in much the same way as Carl Craig or Kirk "Detroitio" did (towards jazz and fusion) with the "Moving Through Here" disc on R&S and also on the Indio disc on the Transmat label. Much like the response to both Planetary Folklore and Programmed the hardcore fans (like me) of Beltran's early sound generally appreciated the new releases but found they lacked the emotional depth and the consistency of his earlier stuff. If you like Indio (not a bad record) I'll venture a guess that any of his first three albums will just blow you out of the water, especially "The Cry" which at one point I had on tape in my car and listened to (no other full albums) for about six months in a row. There is a really good Beltran bio at the R&S site (much better than most of the rest of their bios). Matt

It's entirely possible they are related to the Ampoule label because nobody seems to know anything about the Ampoule label, but I think in the press release it stated that Pub had a break from the "ultra-mysterious Ampoule collective" (but maybe I'm wrong). Vertical Form does have a website: http://www.verticalform.com But it is not up yet. Matt
