Words simply can't express how happy I am to see this list finally discussing some hardcore honky-tonk. Now, if only I could steer the discussion on the 661 list -- that's Bakersfield, y'all -- around to the new Kirk Degiorgio Soul of Science mix!

Shake definitely played it at Movement -- about halfway through his set, just before he went into Daft Punk's Harder Faster Stronger and This Is Radio Clash. RE: (313) Metro Area interview
I don't know which tracks you're talking about, but his Clear LP from 1997 (The Driving Memoirs) is an absolute masterpiece in my book, though very much in the minimalist, jazzy vein described (dismissed? ;> ) below. There are so many great ideas on that album, at least three or four per track, that some producers could've made a career out of; unfortunately, except for some of the other Environ material, it looks to have been a bit of a one-off. Maybe I'm just a sucker for that sound, but it's one of the only LPs I keep returning to -- so much so that Metro Area hasn't really impressed me in comparison (though live was a different story...) Apologies in advance for two short commments. > No there probably won't be any collaborations but this > makes me think why is sex so bad in the eyes of "Christians"? I'm not sure which Christians you're referring to here, but the reason why many unreligious people think this about Christians is the old Puritanical attitudes getting associated with all of Christianity. Most Christians think sex is so important that it not be taken lightly, as it often is. > stop using a talent that "God" gave him? > > That's just too bad that "God" > has asked him to stop using it. Our publisher accepts exactly what we give them -- which of course means that any and all complaints about inclusions or treatment can be laid at our feet. > A few years ago I was asked by the editor > of one of those books to compile a list of > essential/important electronic artists, > and either write their bios myself > or find people who could help out. Which "one of those books"?? Since I've been here six years, I'm safe in assuming you meant "one of those types of books", not AMG specifically. > I put a lot of work into narrowing down a list of > 120 or so, but before I could see how many of > those I could get good bios and discographies for, > the editor insisted that I include only bands that had > domestic releases that were currently in-print on CD. Yikes, that *is* a horror story...sorry your experience was so negative -- obviously the guy was a hack who didn't know a thing about the scene. AMG's always been given complete freedom (and wouldn't accept less) to write anything we want about everything we want. Just clearing up what may have been a few mistaken assumptions... > If your are looking for info Richie Hawtin, > Derrick May or f*cking Moby, it's all in there, > obviously, but also names you (me) wouldn't expect > like Michael James, Frank de Groodt & Astralasia. Yes, there's a reason we didn't call it the All Music Guide to Techno... ;> There *are* hundreds of 313 names in there (many who aren't in the Rough Guide) and we're probably heaviest on techno, but we did have to scrimp to fit all the other people out there, ones who've either done something we judged fits under the electronica umbrella, or had an earlier impact on the sound. AMG is a listeners guide, so we don't leave artists out just because they're popular or we don't like their music -- though we definitely take bad music to task. > But apparently you have a major influence on > the development of dance music when you have > a mixed CD out Boxed / Global Underground. Well of course not, but for the people who don't know anything about dance music and want to figure out what Digweed or Sasha or maybe even (heaven forbid) Danny Tenaglia is doing, we'll tell them what's it all about and if it's any cop. Sorry, no British number one smashes for Associates -- they barely even hit the Top Ten (once with Party Fears Two from early '82). > Which is hopefully not just a cash in printed version > of the website entries like all the other AMG books? Cash in? I suppose you're right -- companies like to make money, and the people who work for companies appreciate being paid for their effort... In that sense, the book is a total cash-in. But for all the people who aren't making any extra money from this book (namely, all of our writors and editors, most everyone associated with AMG), the only thing *we* really care about is getting a quality product out there that people will find helpful and make us proud to be doing what we're doing. There *is* quite a bit of information in the book that's not available on the website -- essays, label descriptions, book reviews, music maps, etc. Though all of the biographies and reviews appearing in the book *are* accessible on our website, I'm not sure we should be punished for it. Obviously, it all comes down to a question of value -- is it worth it to have all the information organized and presented in the most easily browseable medium ever devised. I sort of like succumbing to the random nature of a book, just paging around and letting my eye wander. I don't want to shame anyone into buying a copy -- if you've *ever* been to our website, you should be buying a copy of this book... ;> -- but I think it's comprehensive, well-done, and very fun to use. (I've dropped so much money in the past few years based on what I've found on our website and in our books.) As to the factual entries, we're typically overwhelmed by all the corrections necessary to keep a project like this error-free. [313] All Music Guide to Electronica
I think it's been mentioned here a few times in the past, but after four years of working and waiting, we're finally ready to publish the All Music Guide to Electronic(a). Anyone who's spent time on the allmusic.com site knows we take care of a *lot* of records (plus a lot of Detroit records) and this book is no different -- 1,200 artists, 5,000 releases, dozens of essays and label/style descriptions, plus book reviews, etc. Amazon.com has a publishing date of May 18 (this Friday), though I'm not sure the major bookstores will have copies before the festival. What I do know is we'll have a table set up with books for sale at the Record Time in Roseville next Friday (May 25 - mid-to-late afternoon). Of course we'll be selling copies from our booth at DEMF as well -- they're $20 each, which is $5 off the normal price. We'll have plenty of artists coming by, plus a few surprise guests. No pressure to spend money, but Diana and I (and maybe Rob) and all the other AMG brethren would love to see as many people stop by as can make it... .john. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I sure don't want to defend Moby (though he's good at what he does), but even though he's the frontman of this whole tour, he probably didn't have much of a say regarding who's playing where -- especially with hype-worthy acts like Incubus and Nelly Furtado involved... Look on the bright side; there'll be absolutely nothing on the main stage to distract you from what's going on at the side stage... ;> I can just see the conversation now... Moby: "Hey, I've got these three really talented black guys from Detroit for the main stage." Corporate People: "Well, we've already got a coupla rappers." Moby: "Ummm, they're not rappers..." Corporate People: "So what, are they like D'Angelo or something?" Moby: "No, they're techno DJs." Corporate People: "Wha?"

RE: [313] Opinions on the Stacey Pullen LP?
> RE: two-step garage, not all of it is commercial > or obvious and it's a shame that the hype is > impacting on perceptions of the music as a whole. I don't think anyone would knock Masters at Work for sounding commercial, so it's hard to see why anyone could knock 2-step for the same reasons (okay, comparing a group with an entire scene is a bit dangerous to begin with). When it's done right though it's pure adrenaline, and really isn't that far from the original American garage scene back in the day -- just a bit more spastic and hyper-programmed. It's about all I've been listening to lately -- my faves so far are the Pure Garage compilation mixed by DJ EZ or any of the Locked On sets (Best Of or Sound of the Pirates). Admittedly, they're best for those who like a hook to go along with their incredible programming/production... I'm not so sure about the Wookie and MJ Cole albums -- I think they're great producers, but I just wish they wouldn't go the route of the hyped producer in a new stylee showing he can take on all sorts of things *other* than 2-step. The compilations are still the perfect buzz. .john.
RE: [313] "What Kind Of House Party Is This?"
> Does anyone have any more info on > this book? Looks like great reading. It is a great read, though Detroiters will have to laugh at the transcripts of Michigan place names -- apparently Juan studied at Wotshenaw Community College in Ipsonati or somesuch blather. It's pretty formulaic too (each DJ gets the same questions), but there's a lot of great info inside and it's one of the books I come back to a lot -- almost everyone talks about how they grew up, why they became a DJ, thoughs on the scene, etc. Here's a review I wrote for the All Music Guide to Electronic(a), which will *definitely* be published by May. "Jonathan Fleming's in-depth look at the British club scene of the late '80s and early '90s is an invaluable tool to better understand the individuals involved in making house and techno into a global force. In the first part of the book, Fleming publishes his one- or two-page interviews with close to one hundred DJs (and a few producers). Each of his selections are major influences on the style (some of whom rarely give interviews), including British names Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Grooverider and Andrew Weatherall as well as American legends like Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, Juan Atkins, Todd Terry, Jesse Saunders, Derrick May, DJ Pierre, Joey Beltram and many others. The second part of the book focuses on famed clubs around the globe including British entries like the Haçienda, Shoom, Spectrum, Land of Oz, Ministry of Sound and Cream plus a few from America like the Tunnel Club, Limelight, the Roxy, the Sound Factory and the Music Box. Though Fleming's interviews focus on only a few standard questions (and his transcriptions of the American interviews could've used an informed spell-checker), there's an astonishing amount of information (and many pictures) about the early lives and careers of most of the seminal figures in electronic dance music. What Kind of House Party Is This? is easily dance music's most educational resource."

> A lot of the Body and Soul folk are > using cds these days: Danny Krivit, if > I remember correctly, does. FWIW, I can > only picture myself using something that > has some kind of creative incentive. The difference comes with your approach to DJing... For hip-hop or techno DJs, turntables make perfect sense because they're trying to keep the music flowing. Francois and Danny Krivit are a bit more about keeping the *mood* flowing, basically playing out records to set an atmosphere, like David Mancuso at the original Loft parties (he used turntables, but usually refused to mix records at all). .john.

Lots of old-school 909 beats and mega-distorted effects that completely shredded the speakers -- but in a good way... ;> Juan was great too, after sorting out the technical difficulties he settled into a really nice groove. > Is garage a real genre? Sure is, and it's just as old as house or techno -- a bit underrated though, since it often gets lumped in with house because they're both similar to disco. Check http://allmusic.com/ and search for "Garage/House" under styles to get a little essay on the subject, and also check artists like Tony Humphries, Paul Trouble Anderson, Blaze, even Masters at Work, etc. for the original '80s sound or Todd Edwards, Kerri Chandler, Tuff Jam for the '90s variety... > Can someone point to towards a definitive garage track? Hard to say, but here's my favorites: "Set It Off" by Strafe "I'm Not Gonna Let You" or "Music Is the Answer" by Colonel Abrams (the first is on Tony Humphries' great mix album "Take Home the Club") "Don't Make Me Wait" by Peech Boys "If You Should Need a Friend" by Blaze There's a great compilation on Cold Front called "History of House Music, Vol. 2: New York Garage Style" that has most of these tracks... .John.
RE: [313] Previous v Present turnouts in Detroit
> Whoa. Poetry reading? Who had that? Over a DJ set?? About three-quarters of the way through May's set, Umar Bin Hassan from the Last Poets came on and did a spoken-word reading (no accompaniment from the decks). It was well-done, but it confused quite a few people -- unfortunately, he sounded *very* hoarse and was hard to understand... I don't know who was on the conga, but that part turned out great -- he was on quite a bit during May's set, and at one point, he and May did an excellent tribal decks-and-conga duet with brief pauses every 30 seconds or so. They just kept going and going, so every time the audience thought it was over, they'd launch into it again and get an even *bigger* roar from the crowd... RE: [313] Suggestions for next year's DEMF
> add rob hood in the mix too!!! > > definitely ... The fact that he's > at Motor this weekend nearly slipped > past me with all the DEMF hub-bub! :) Wait, Rob Hood's at Motor? I'm there if so, but I just checked Motor's site and it doesn't list him -- unless it's on Sunday?... .John.
DEMF Thoughts
Before sifting through the 600 (!) messages currently in my Inbox since last Thursday, I thought I'd type in all my impressions to add to the atmosphere for everyone, whether you were there and can relate or weren't and want to know. First off, there are absolutely no doubts in my mind, this was an *incredible* festival. All those high expectations I carried in with me were met and surpassed on an almost hourly basis... ;) The music was excellent and the vibes were simply incredible ('cept for the completely misguided violent moshing by a couple of Slayer fans during Richie Hawtin's set). All this positivity and love were such a vivid counterpoint to last year's Woodstock (various fires, assaults, etc.) Even more than that though -- the diversity!! I remember hearing Carl really wanted a broad range of people showing up, and he certainly got it. Rave kids, indie-rockers, hip-hop headz, daytripping families, middle-aged couples, old guys all *over* the place -- it was *so* great to see the range of people getting exposed to pure Detroit techno in the right environment. I think we *really* showed Detroit what techno's all about. For once, it wasn't about teens or drugs or illegal venues or shady promoters (the usual I-Team Special Reports) -- it was *all* about the music and the culture. Detroiters got to see the music in an almost completely unfiltered setting, and I hope it inspires everyone that was there (it definitely inspired a few people I didn't expect to be too moved...) I don't know what else to say... I saw *so* many great sets: Aril Brikha, Adult, Ectomorph, Slum Village, the Roots, Mike Clark, Theorem, Fanon Flowers, Godfather, DJ Assault, Lauren Flax, Shake, and of course, Saunderson/Rolando/May/Hawtin to end things on the highest note possible. It was such a sea of humanity by Derrick's set, and just about everyone had their hands in the air... Lasting Impressions: Theo Parrish taking us back to the *original* Loft days with his disco/funk set at the Planet E afterparty... Easily my Festival highlight, and a great thing to see since I'd missed Saturday's events. That crazy old guy dancing and pumping his fists to Theorem (!) on Monday afternoon... The middle-aged black couple in front of me yelling and screaming in recognition when Derrick dropped "No UFO's"... One breakdancing circle I saw during Shake -- there was a whitebread father there with his preschool-age daughter right in the circle. Her face was all lit up at the moves, and everyone was taking special care to see she had a good time... And speaking of wide smiles, how about BVL getting his props on the main stage after Richie's set?... ;) Does anyone else get the feeling that we're going to see a *lot* more people at events from now on, plus a big jump in record sales?... .John.
RE: [313] industrial
> Section 25's "Looking From The Hilltops" still a fav of mine. I don't think they're out on LP, but all the Section 25 albums have been reissued on CD with bonus tracks. The reissue of From The Hip has two remixes of "Looking from a Hilltop" plus six mixes of other songs. .John.
DEMF/Hart Plaza Layout?
Hey, does anyone know of an online map with the specific layout for Hart Plaza? A friend and I are trying to agree on a good meeting spot... There is a fountain in the middle though, right? Maybe we'll just meet there... Can't believe I'm going to miss the entire first day's lineup plus the fabulous afterparties, but my stupid best friend decided to pick the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend to get married in Grand Rapids. Please don't tell me what I've missed... ;> .John.
RE: (313) national post article today
> sorry, not detroit specific, but relevant or > representational of the battle being waged > in many north american cities right now. You know, 60 Minutes II was going to have a big feature on Ecstasy this past Tuesday, but I'm pretty sure it didn't air. They previewed the Ecstasy piece on Sunday just after the regular 60 Minutes, and then it as listed in the newspaper on Tuesday, but all they had was a piece on Elian, and then some other things. Anyone know what happened? I wouldn't expect much from Dateline or 20/20, but I bet 60 Minutes could do a (comparatively) balanced report... .John.

RE: (idm) Re: (313) NY Times Electronic Article
> BUT this brings up the fine topic of > why Mr. Hawtin is mentioned as the pioneer. > > you know, wouldn't Carl Craig or Mad > Mike be a more appropriate choice? Spot-on. Carl Craig would be the natural choice from all angles: as a musical pioneer, as someone with underground cred, as someone who hasn't deserted the dancefloor, and most importantly (for NY Times, at least) as the kind of major-label tie-in easily found in Tower that major media outlets tend toward . I suppose we should just be happy they didn't pick Sasha as their techno cover-boy... ;) And, to give credit where it's due, the sound clips do include "No UFO's" and "Strings of Life"... .John.
(313) NY Times Electronic Article
Prompted by the coming release of the movie "Groove," today's New York Times has a comparatively well-done article on electronic music, with separate pages explaining the differences between techno, house, drum'n'bass, trance, and big beat. Admittedly, nobody here's going to learn *too* much -- that is, unless it's a revelation to you that "a skilled DJ blends records on two or three turntables simultaneously, which is called spinning." Still, there's audio/video/interview clips balancing quite a few pioneers (Larry Levan, Juan Atkins, Richie Hawtin) with the obvious commercial favorites (Basement Jaxx, Sasha, Fatboy). Check it out... http://www.nytimes.com/library/music/031300dj-intro.html .John.

Okay, now who's messing around with names?... ;) .John. (who never wants to be known as "The Bushman" or "Bushy-tale" ever again...) (and no George W. jokes either, smart guys!)
RE: (313) Yellow Magic Orchestra

I like Naughty Boys (1983) as well, but it's a bit closer to pop than proto-techno... I've got reviews up on most of their LP's at http://www.allmusic.com. Enjoy! .John.
RE: (313) let there be house!

Funny, I've got a headache too! ;) It's kinda odd... There's a Todd Terry collection just out on Warlock that lists both "Can You Party" and "Can You Feel It" -- both have vocal samples that say "can you feel it," but they're definitely different sources! The one on "Can You Party" sounds like an audience live recording, and the one on "Can You Feel It" is more of a diva vocal... Both great tracks though, and the collection (Todd Terry's Greatest Hits) is excellent. Even weirder -- the collection lists "Can You Feel It" as by Mr. Fingers, but it's indeed the Todd Terry version. I don't hear any similarities to the Mr. Fingers' version, unless it's the vocal sample (I just remember the instrumental). We got any old-schoolers on the list can give us the story -- and I'm sure there's a few interesting ones ;) -- behind these tracks? .John.

Nice and (fairly) intimate second album from Mr. Sims, supposedly still available -- I see it at Record Time occasionally... Check http://www.allmusic.com for more info. .John.
RE: (313) Carl Craig on Saturday

Could be a few different ones, but it sounds like "It's Alright, I Feel It" from NuYorican Soul (aka Masters at Work). More info at http://allmusic.com/... .John.
RE: Sv: (313) FW: booty ghetto whadever
> What the hell is Lavelle smoking anyway? Is he even at Mo' Wax anymore? I'm pretty sure he was on his way out, but maybe some of the releases he supervised are still trickling out. I think he went to XL Recordings or to a new label, leaving Mo' Wax basically a corporate shill... .John.
RE: (313) review of solar last nite
It was pretty fabulous. I know Kenny & Carl aren't thought of primarily as DJs, but they had the place rocking! Carl had a pretty intense look on his face most of the night, but Kenny was really enjoying himself -- pumping his fist in the air every now and then, really getting the crowd into it. And it was a complete sauna on the dancefloor, you could barely move to get around *or* get down. I don't know Kenny's usual sets very well, but there were a lot of party tracks (those remixes of "I Feel Love" at two separate times, "Bango," plus a lot of those hands-in-the-air kinda wavers) with just a few jaunts into harder/minimal territory... Saw a few 313 heads in the place too -- hey Dave, how was the trip back!? ;) -- and everyone looked to be having a great time. I got there just as Carlos & Craig were wrapping up, so I can't comment on their set, but Detroit Grand Poobahs were hilarious for the 20 minutes they were on. There was a great anniversary vibe to the entire proceedings too, I only hope Solar keeps putting on events (by the way, any news on that front?). And, ummm, if that gorgeous Indian girl I was bumping with on the dancefloor is on the list, could you get in touch? ;) .John.
RE: (313) Planet E Festival
