Hello folks, OK - I've got two tickets for New Year's Eve up for sale at face value, although please feel free to get into a bidding war over them ;-) I must stress that I AM STILL GOING to this event, and am loking forward to it very much. However I've just found out that my press pass is in the post (wahey!) so I may as well try and recoup for the tickets I bought. Any interested parties should reply privately. Re: [313] UR/Moodyman NYE
H I'd like to hear the official comment on why the line-up has been cropped so disappointingly. Moodyman'll be great, if he actually plays at all - my thinking at the moment is that we won't actually know until the night whether this will happen or not. I've been misled once it seems, so once more isn't gonna hurt, right? The fact still remains that the line-up as it stands now is far from the one that enticed me to part with £30. When I called up the information line I did ask the guy I spoke to whether the full UR crew would be in attendance - to which he of course replied yes. Ranx, if you're out there perhaps you could supply us with some kind of insight into how such an ambitious line-up could be miscommunicated (such an advantageous miscommunication at that), and also inform us whether ticket refunds are available for the disappointed ones. I'm trying hard not to scream Rip-off at this point, but to be honest I'm frustrated by this and a little pissed off. NC _ Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com

If you buy from the Credit Card number they'll insist on sending the ticket special delivery, which is admittedly very fast, but you'll have to be in when it arrives to sign for it and it costs quite a bit for a mere bit of paper. One of the guys in Atlas said that the tickets were selling well. There was a poster up in the shop with all the relevent names featured. It's up to you at the end of the day. Everyone who's bought a ticket is facing the same risk - I don't think we can give you any more reassurance than we have received ourselves. I'm certainly not gonna spend the run up to this event worrying whether it will happen or not. As someone else said, I'm sure most people have been let down by no-shows before (anyone else get suckered into one of the Eclipse festivals??) - I reckon this one's worth taking a gamble on though... CC, Similarly to you, I only recently got around to buying Terrence's last Tresor album, and am now wondering why I missed it first time round as it's very good indeed. Terrence has just released a new 12 called 'Minimalism Part 2', again on the Background label. Re: [313] Fw: NOVEMBER NEWS
Tristan, Carl is playing at a large-scale Bugged Out event in Prestatyn (North Wales) on the 17th. Named the 'Bugged Out Weekender', the event features Carl, Richie Hawtin, Felix Da Housecat, Green Velvet, Justin Robertson, Dave Clarke, plus a fair amount of tat to boot. Tickets are £99, which seems rather steep. The event is set at a 'holiday camp' and so the prices include a chalet for the duration. I really don't know how much of a success the event will be - personally I can think of better ways of spending a hundred quid - and many alternative settings where I'd rather see Carl spin! RE: [313] Previous v Present turnouts in Detroit
Hi, I believe the point Jason was making was purely a live DJing one - i.e. it has been said that Hawtin is a technically superior DJ to Mills. Whilst I'm not going to get into a who's better than who discussion on that level, I will say that *technically*, the stuff that Richie pulls off is very impressive - there's the 909 manipulation on the fly, but also his use of delay effects with the foot pedal and, more recently, the inclusion of a 101 also. On top of this he keeps the whole thing cruising along tight as hell - not as easy as you suggest. Nick Original Message Follows From: pooper scooper [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] Previous v Present turnouts in Detroit Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 08:21:48 EDT Technically superior in what way? Jeff has been producing some of the most exotic sounds on the scene for years now. By the way, the 303 and 909/808 are so simple to work, I wouldn't credit anyone who uses one to be technical on that respect only, while they all are great gear. Besides Jeff did it all first... tuning that ride cymbal, pitching up and transposing tones... On a seperate note, You don't have to be a rocket scientist to push buttons and make good techno... Hey Martin, I haven't actually ordered mail order from them, but a friend of mine was going to NYC and calling in in person (which is nice), and said that he'd pick up some stuff if I wanted. I spent ages looking at *that* catalogue and drafting up a list, but alas he returned almost empty handed. Apparently they had only a fraction of what they advertised as 'in stock', so you might be better off not bothering - especially in light of the $100 miniimum, which is indeed their policy as far as I know. Presumably they appear to have something specific in your case, which you can't find in one of the other large mail order places? Nick, Claude Young's Deta label has had two releases to date. Deta 001 is Claude's 'The Numbers EP' Deta 002 is Querida - 'Querida #1' Tracklisting:- A: Treachery AA.1: Agua AA.2 Lost Highway It's a little different from the first release, with three percussive tribal tracks - very well put together though. The BIG question...
Hiya folks. I've been off list for a few days and have only just finished wading through the backlog. There's been a fair amount of trivia, but also some really important stuff being addressed, which is good. I've been debating something in my head for a while and I'd like to open it to a more public forum as I'm sure it will cause a certain amount of division. Progression of the music VS. body movin Ideally I think a compromise of both would be nice, and there have certainly been examples of that it the past, but as most will recognise, innovation isn't as easy to come by these days. At a time when even Jeff Mills' new 'EP' sounds like a poor copy of his own work (IMHO), it's got me thinking more and more about whether it's good enough to just make tracks that rock the floor, and how we can get out of the loop, so to speak. Techno is rooted within dance music and as such does it have a limited lifespan in it's current form? There is a time and a place for both as I'm sure you'll agree, but the original vision of this music is based around the idea of progression (amongst other things) - I'm interested in discussing how viable that idea is today, how the music could (should?) progress, and how the constraints of the 4/4 could stifle this. What do you reckon? Nick Craddock __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

YAAY I've missed you guys damnit!! May I be the first to say that Robert Hood fuckin rocked at The End on Saturday. He had some live gear with him (no specifics unfortunately - only the 909 was in view) and he used this to maximum effect. He laid down the tightest set I believe I have ever heard - pure hard minimal linear funk all the way, with many of his own tracks sounding great in the mix. He utilised the 909 really well - actually over the top of some of the tracks as opposed to just mixing it as a seperate track, and was creating his own basslines and dropping synth lines as well. His mixing was completely spot on - didn't drop a beat all night. In addition to this stunning set, I got to meet up with some 313 headz too - Big shout to Martin Clark, Dan Butler, Simon Pascoe and Anya Stang!! *Great to be back on 313 - the absence made me realise what a sad empty life I have (I'm joking shit, no really I'm joking) Nick __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Yeah - I picked up Colin's 'Abstract Funk Theory' compilation. It's pretty nice - in a kinda melodic tech-housey/electro vane. The Ian O'Brien track (Mad Mike Disease) is wicked, as are contributions from Kevin Yost, Vince Watson - in fact they're all good apart from one erm it's called 'firefly' or something and it's really cheesy - quite bemusing how someone with usually impeccable taste put it on there in the first place. I liked the 'Mutant Disco' compilation a lot (actually more), but in comparison, the material on that was a lot more raw - the tracks on 'AFT' are really polished sounding, production-wise. I saw Colin DJ last Wednesday at Electrocuted in Brixton. He played a mainly electro set (H - I wonder why) but managed to work in Fix - 'Flash', and 'Blue Monday'. He also dropped that It's The Weekend.. track from the Direct Beat compilation that someone was slating on here a few months back. Incidentally, I think it's a great track. even on a Wednesday :-) With regards to his mixing - He ain't a hot shot DJ technically, but as with many, his track selection's what makes it - as you'll appreciate from his radio shows. London's airwaves are certainly a poorer place without the man Dale Nick __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

(313) Surveying the carnage.....
Greetings folks, I've been off the net for a few days and have only just read the whole Ben Sims / Jeff Mills saga. Although the angry reaction did not stem from anything I said directly, it was initially kinda related to one of my posts. For the record I'd just like to say that I have seen Jeff Mills and I think he's the fuckin don. That goes for productions too. I haven't seen TP as yet, but would like to. I've seen Claude Young and Dave Clarke many times, in addition to most of the DJs we respect and talk about on this list. I do know what I'm talking about in that respect - my point was that Ben Sims has some quite unique touches to his DJ style, and I was merely giving props to that fact! Peace y'all. (313) Overload Media
G'day folks. The first issue of Overload:Media - the new UK based fanzine, is in the shops now. Featuring interviews with Ben Sims and Surgeon, a feature on the ongoing UR vs Sony copyright infringement issue, and contributions from the old Magic Feet gang, it's a damn good read and it costs absolutely nish, nada, nuffink. Keep your eyes peeled for it. Hopefully there should be some global distribution to come, but I don't have any details on that at present I'm afraid. Cheers for the bandwidth. (313) motor incident / Carl Cox
Just to wander from the intended topic slightly - I'd be curious to hear what kind of set Carl Cox plays at Motor. He's undoubtedly a skilful mixer in the technical department, but in recent years he's opted for the path of rancid cheese and superstardom - playing speed garage and trance, and becoming a Radio 1 media darling. It's a shame as I've seen him play some good sets in the past, but it seems that his 'eclecticism' spans all boundaries with sadly no restriction on quality.. Re: (313) Ben Sims kicks ass!
Amen to that! Ben's an outstanding DJ - a real breath of fresh air. I saw him play a few months back and it was very apparent to me that I'd never seen anyone with a style like his. As John points out, he's very hip-hop influenced in the mix, but he's pretty subtle with it too - definitely one to watch and whilst I agree with John about the 'tracky' techno comedown, Sims certainly knows what buttons to push on the dancefloor with his productions. Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 18:19:42 +0100 I saw Ben Sims play this Friday at the Silo in Belgium. Keep your eye on this guy. He is really brilliant behind the decks. Clearly his hiphop past is reflected in his mixing. I saw him do stuff I've never seen a dj do before. Really cool. Although I'm coming down a bit from this hard looped techno this was still exciting. His productions are more than everage as well, to say the least of it. Oh, btw, he's working on a new album right now. It should be released through Tresor later this year. John __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

(313) Carl Craig on Saturday
Yeah, I know this thread's finished, but I've got new info / questions did anyone hear what he finished with? i was frog marched outtadere - My mate, who stayed longer than me said that 'No Way Back' was either Carl's last track, or even the first track of the guy after him. - Does anyone know the name of that wicked house track that he played, which had a really uplifting vocal which went I feel alright, the world is good! (or something similar)? - In response to the query about the Richie Hawtin Mary Anne Hobbs mix. Richie did an hour mix on her show (she's a late night BBC Radio jock) in December last year. It was all quite downtempo stuff. - Was someone talking about a new Mills 12 the other day or did I dream it? Peace, Nick __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: (313) Re: 313-Digest V1 #1310
Yeah Martin, I was there too - what a night! I don't know if I caught the start of his set or not, as he was already on when I got into the main room at maybe just before 1am. He was playing an amazing CR sounding track that's on the Richie Hawtin Mary Anne Hobbs mix - crunchy as hell (I'd kill for a track ID). I had to leave early too as I had a train to catch, but left as he was playing 'No Way Back'. It was nice to hear The Goodmen out again too, right after 'Yeke Yeke' - was that the Hardfloor mix? Sister Ray still haven't posted my copy of the 'Jaguar' mixes so that was my first taste of 'em - very impressed I was too. I didn't expect Carl to play as hard as he did, I have to say. It was getting really stomping at points - do you know if he played like that last time he was there? That was the first Electric Chair I've been at, but if the vibe on Saturday was anything to go by I'll make a habit of it. A top night indeed. Martin, I don't think Alan was dissing us Brits to be honest - more Muzik magazine if anything, which is a load of toss these days. I reckon his post should've been read with a bit more humour. It's a bit lame to be tracing the demise of UK clubland back to the USA by way of capitalism too. The real divide is good / bad music as opposed to underground / overground. Country and Western could be seen to have a pretty 'underground' following over here (me and mates anyway) ;-) Nick Original Message Follows From: martin clark [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Re: 313-Digest V1 #1299 Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 14:28:22 GMT Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 00:28:34 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (313) FW: booty ghetto whadever In a message dated 2/17/00 12:01:12 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: [cut] The only thing they like in London is cheese trance, that is, if you believe what you read in Muzik. a. I was speaking with Colin at a Lost event a few months back and he said that the reason they parted company was due to him not wanting to tour anymore. Colin said that for now he was happy with the 'G-Flame' project, and he was looking forward to exploring new avenues. Nick __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
