(313) Krakow
Hey 313 list Used to be a subscriber many years ago and have been away for a while. No idea if it's still thriving or a deserted wasteland these days, but here goes. I'm off to Krakow for my stag weekend on the 28th and was hoping any seasoned techno travellers could recommend any clubs, bars, record stores worth checking out. If anyone knows of anything specifically going on that weekend that would be even better. Don't necessarily have to be techno clubs, anywhere playing good music, be it house, funk, soul etc... Thanks in advance Stewart Caig (Used to be stewart @ digital-soul)

Although i havent seen the film its frustrating, especially after seeing the French documentary recently and feeling it was over halfway there barring a few shortcomings that this documentary doesn't seem to have addressed. For some people it will be their first exposure to the music, ideas and personalities involved. I find it extremely frustrating that at this important first encounter Detroit is being represented by such a sub-standard effort. Why should we cut the film some slack? The film-makers blew it, and pretending otherwise doesn't help anyone or achieve anything. Dan. P.S. If you want to know about the content, I can be be mostly summarised as badly shot, poorly lit gossip. The interviewer(s) totally failed to reach any depth with the subjects. Sure, hearing about Kevin knocking Derrick out is funny, but it's not really what it's all about is it? Now we're movie critics? Might come as a shocker to some but Scorsese and Stone turned down the opportunity to direct or even fund Hi Tech Soul. Are some of us that self righteous and petty that we must cut down everything that is attempting to make a difference? Outside this list most of the world knows nothing about Detroit, it's influence on Electronica or the people that made it happen. You are going to criticize a documentary calling it shoddy? Really, name one that isn't kind of shoddy (please don't you dare reference a Michael Moore documentary here). If you must wage an attack on what I will call reference material, then do so because it fails to provide facts or because it is biased. I personally haven't had the opportunity to see it. I personally can't wait. When I do see it I will take it for what it's worth...a low budget film. I will take what I can learn from it and pump it to all these kids that think this music culture is about drugs, fashion and who's been to more parties. So I ask, can anyone that has seen this film tell us about the content? Re: (313) complaining about the fuse-in line-up
I was about to comment (from the pov of a european who has been before and would like to go again) that the way the line-up has been announced and the nature of it so far is unlikely to draw the kind of people who'd normal stump up the 100s to come to Detroit for the festival. Yeah well im in the same boat, but having said that I spent about a grand all in coming over from the UK for the second festival and ended up spending most my time drunk in Greektown or somewhere chasing after some Texan girls from the hotel. To my credit I did find myself at an afterparty at one point which was great until I realised there was no bar and it was Adam X on the decks so I left, only to later discover that Drexciya played live about 20 minutes later (It was Alex's eyes only party)! So from a musical standpoint my jaunt to Detoit was an abject failure. From a getting it on with cute Texan chicks standpoint though it was worth every penny! I guess what im saying is if I ever stumped up the cash to go back it wouldn't neccesarily be for the line up as much as just to have a mad 3 days in Detroit again. Im sure there would always be enough good music going on at some point to satisfy my need for that.

Steve Bicknell was good as usual. Nothing flashy mixing-wise, as usual. He played the same two Ame tracks as last week, back-to-back again, and the same Donna Summer 'I Feel Love' version (maybe he plays this in every set???), but the rest was pretty dope. Never thought I'd hear him play 'Loose Lips', or any broken beat stuff for that matter, but he played two joints. He'll prolly play them both next week in the same order as well. I'm not crapping on him. I just can't see why someone with so many good records can mail in parts of his selection so often. Anyway... Colin Dale. Tough to sum up neatly. Ultimately incredibly disappointing, but he mixed Miura with Deep Burnt, which would have been genius if he didn't mix out of Deep Burnt half-way through. Would have been less disappointing if he'd played bland tech house all night, but he tantalised us with anout 5-10 gems along the way, and filled the gaps with turd. That was probably the most confused seamless set I've ever heard. He seemed to have no clue where he wanted to take things, and meandered along where he thought the crowd might take him. Such a crap effort. Worst Spacebase I've witnessed by far. Next week should be outstanding though. My friend Mark from the Outlet Collective will be starting things out with a jazz/funk/soul set which promises to be stunning. He's a funk collector extraordinaire. I do feel that Ai is really trying to lay a marker down in the direction which the compilation seems to be pointing, although as I said, it's not the only atmosphere you'll find on Ai records. There is a distinct analogue, 'IDMish' tone in the music on that compilation, a lot of it is mid-tempo and it's closer to electro than techno. The emphasis on 'melancholy' rather than dark seems quite akin to the 'classic' Detroit tone, as much as there is one (and of course there are just as many exceptions in what we call 'Detroit techno'.) Also let me ask this: which Detroit-associated artist(s) do you think would fit most closely into this 'new direction' which Ai seems to want to travel in? Ken

Re: (313) Frankie Bones
From my perspective as a young kid on the late 80s, early 90s rave scene in the UK. Frankie Bones was very much a name we respected and always looked out for. I admit his music hasnt exactly aged well, but tracks like his bones breaks stuff, the loony tunes stuff he did with Lenny Dee, your house is my house and stuff like that were definatly tunes we all owned and DJed with a lot. He put out a lot of stuff back then and when I first heard him DJ at a club called Sterns in 1990 he drew a very big crowd. So, just saying he certainly made an impact over in the UK back then.
Re: (313) Re : Re: (313) DJ Frankie Bones vs Joey Beltram
was it? i dont agree. for me, the goodness of a record is the great equalizer in my eyes. my mortal enemy could put out a record, and if its hot, ill buy it. i own not a single record that had anything to do with frankie bones, unless some of his stuff was on the nu groove comp i picked up a little while back. ive passed on every single record with his name on it. Well maybe he overused some of the let the bass kick samples back in the day, but I kinda grew up on a lot of his nu groove/bones breaks/loony tunes/musto and bones stuff. Yeah it was never overly sophisticated or even particularly original, but it was that New York sound that I associated with guys like Bones, Lenny Dee and even Todd Terry back then. Yeah he has done a lot of ravey stuff, but tracks like 'you are the one' still sound pretty dope to me today.
Re: (313) Re : Re: (313) DJ Frankie Bones vs Joey Beltram
3. I never paid attention to NY techno. When it comes to Frankies from NY, I'm more Knuckles than Bones. I interviewed Frankie about 5 years ago and he told me that even as late as 89/90 the Detroit stuff hadn't really reached NY, he had not really heard of techno and his main inspirations were still house, electro, disco and hip hop. Don't know how much truth there was to that, but I guess to even consider it NY techno is something of a compliment if it was truly produced in a vacume from Detroit. - Original Message - From: Kent Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: list 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, March 03, 2006 2:26 PM Subject: Re: (313) Re : Re: (313) DJ Frankie Bones vs Joey Beltram 1. I remember he started out playing a lot of old electro that was quite promising, but then ended up dropping stuff like Red Alert by Basement Jaxx that I just didnt feel was a fitting ending to such a great weekend. - Original Message - From: /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Robert Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Hardie, Nick [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Mark Pays [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2006 1:27 PM Subject: RE: (313) RE: Derrick May I remember when juan played at demf and he trainwrecked so bad that it started hailing out. It showed me what it means to be a truly professional DJ. I've often thought of sharing it with the list. The evening went something like this. It was an event called Hybrid sometime around '96 in a London warehouse type venue just south of the river. The line-up was mouth watering - Juan Atkins, Joey Beltram and Derrick May in that order. It started Badly. After the warm-up came Juan. He played a bad set that got worse. He looked like he'd rather be anywhere but behind the decks. He started getting booed. So he responded by playing 25 minutes of beatless ambient nonsense mixed badly with a beatless mix of strings of life. Someone started throwing empty plastic water bottles at the stage and off he went. Rubbish. Started to think I'd wasted my money. On came Beltram. As ever, he started with Energy Flash and then dropped a classic set of his own stuff interlaced with plenty of dark Chicago jacking grooves and a load of the Robert Armani catalogue. The place came to life. Then the power went. The music stopped for about an hour. Everyone waited it out though. When the power came back DM came on. I can only think that DM felt he had to make up for what went before. Juan was an embarrassment, while Joey was great, he was stopped in his tracks by the power cut. DM dropped an absolutely classic set of house and techno. His mixing was lightning fast, often using the headphones for just a few seconds before dropping the next track. The crowd responded brilliantly. He worked the eq, and cut and scratched superbly. He went way, way, over time until the bouncers came to the stage and started shouting at him to stop. He wasn't having any of it so this big bouncer guy just starts shaking the scaffold that May is standing on and the record starts jumping all over the place. May looks at the guy and shakes his head then picks the up the deck and holds it out in his palm right above the bouncer and plays the tune again. This time the shaking doesn't make the record jump. May is grinning his head off, the crowd are cheering like mad and the bouncer looks like he's going to explode. We got a few more minutes of his last track before they turned off the power to make him stop! He then hung around for 30 mins afterwards chatting with stragglers and getting well deserved thanks and compliments from all. It was one of the best sets I've seen, but most impressive was the work rate, passion and commitment. He could have done his two hours and left, but instead he turned a bad night into one of the most memorable and that makes him a great DJ in my eyes. It was a long time ago now, but I've heard plenty of people with similar stories. I really must see him play again sometime -Original Message- From: Paul Kendrick [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 20 February 2006 11:05 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org

Stupid question time, but how do you actually vote? Another stupid question, whats actually the point? I can't personally see how voting for a track that sampled Juan Atkins is giving support to him beyond possibly landing him another royalties pay cheque from the extra radio play/sales it'll get. A good friend of mine is friends with he brother of one of the guys from that G4 band (for those that dont know they are a new UK boy band cashing in on the current trend for fusing opera and pop music and recent winners of some pop idol style TV show). The guy released a solo album on CD about 3 years ago before they won X-factor which sold about 500 copies. My friend managed to get hold of one of these CDs, stuck it on Ebay and it finally sold yesterday for £800! A commercially released CD from 3 years ago! Im doing my best to try and blag myself a signed copy of it at the moment to fund a new house!! Ridiculous Stu

I've been hearing about this record for weeks. Who is it by, what's the release called, and I'll try and get a soundfile of it for you Good luck, but by all accounts its as rare as hens teeth. Its by Moodymann and I'd never even heard it before until I heard him do it live the other night in London. Think its just available as a white on KDJ records, although I have no idea as to if it was ever actually released or in what numbers. ps. (313) Moodymann live
Thought Id hit the list with my report of the Moodymann show at the Jazz Cafe last night. Basically blew me away, really enjoyed it. Started off with Piranahhead playing keyboard and singing through a couple of nice jazzy numbers before he got up and did a little guitar solo. At this point the sound system seemed to be a little quiet, plus the bar chatter was drowning him out so I moved into the center where the sound was much better. Then Moody came on as his drunk P Funked out alter ego with a fake beer belly, blonde plaited hair and a hairnet over one side of his head. All very funny. He then introduced Lisa O who came on sounding and looking much like Erikah Badu and belted out a few really soulful numbers that really got the crowd going. Next up Moody introduced Paul Randolph who sang and played guitar. First track was a really nice jazz funkesque track, then it started getting a little more housey before he settled down for a couple of slower tracks that he did with Kirk Degorgio and (I think) are going to be on the upcoming As One album. He finished off with a track on Ubiquity he did with John Arnold that simply rocked. Then it was time for the main man and the amazing freaky motherfu*ker track, its the first time Ive ever heard it and man, what a track. The bassline and percussion sent shivers down my spine and combined with Moody silohetted behind a white screen growling into the mic whilst Lisa O danced in the tightest pair of hot pants Ive ever seen in a sort of homage to the Prince Kiss video, I think it was probably the highlight of the show. Eventually he got the crowd baying 'Moody' in an attempt to entice him out on stage, to which he obliged and came out and performed a couple of more tracks with the whole band on stage. Eventually he handed the stage over to Roberta Swann who came on and belted a few Jazz numbers sounding very much like Shirley Bassey. Overall the band spanned the spectrum of funk, disco, soul and house with an almost Parliment like showmanship. Top top night. ps. are there any mixes online with the freaky motherfu*ker track that anyone knows of? Stu

Did anyone go and see him in London last night? Ive heard a few reports from the Glasgow gig saying that KDJ didnt go near a keyboard or MPC all night, despite this being heavily billed for the London gig. Im going to see the show tonight and just wondered if its going to be the same deal as Glasgow. Stu
Re: (313) Moodyman
Cheers for the info. To be honest I'm looking forward to it more than I would be if I was just expecting 4/4 Moodyman stuff. They played for almost 2 hours there and it was more of a Mahogany records show case then a live set from Moodymann. It started with Nicky O. preforming a couple of soul tracks, followed by Paul Randolph on bass and vocals preforming some of his material and with Andres on percussion on some of the tracks. Piranahead was doing keys and playing guitar with both Nicky O.'s and Paul Randolph's tracks. The whole show was hosted by KDJ's cousin (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). After that Moodymann came on stage and started out with this amazing tracks called Sexy Mothaf*cka (That was a really great track btw!) and did a show that reminded me a bit of the same show he did when i saw him at the Majestic theater in Detroit. Only this time the girl (Nicky O.) was not under a sheet but both behind a white screen with a lamp behind it so you saw silhouettes of KDJ and Nicky O. doing there erm... thing. KDJ sing/talked on top of tracks, they played some more tracks as well. Then he brought on Roberta Sweet who did a track together with Andres finally she did an acapella toghether with Paul Randolph. Great show but don't expect a lot of 4/4 Moodymann tracks it was extremly nice to listen too. Not really, cos Carl Craig should still reserve the right to repress one day should his kids ever need some beans and he is less likley to sell as many units if everyone has already snapped up the boots.

God, I remember the first ever rave there. when it was still a roller skate rink. it seemed like the whole school went. I thought hmm, f**k that. Was it a roller skate rink? I went to Dreamscape 2 or something and remember there was a huge roller skate rink next door, but the rave was just in a huge dusty big empty warehouse space. Think this was before it became known as the sanctuary? I never went back, so i always assumed that the Sanctury was this building and not the rollerskate joint next door. Not that I actually care in any way shape or form at this point in my life so please feel free to completly ignore this musing. HAPPY HARDCORE! Ha ha ha. No wonder I turned out like this. Never quite grasped the concept of something being both happy and hardcore at the same time to be honest. Never got into all those happy piano breaks myself too much and much as I didnt really get into the whole gabber thing either I did chuckle when Lenny Dee came to town for the first time and ruined the party with a 200bpm 2 hour set of angry noise! The looks on the faces of the happy hardcore brigade was priceless! It's weird, but when I think back, early on going to raves was quite a universal thing, alot of different people went. I remember the first signs of people splitting off was when all the birds I knew wanted to go to loveranch, and loads of lads wanted to go to, say, labyrinth. Thats the first time I noticed things splitting off into smaller genres. Its true. I guess it was around late 89 when I started going out and I remember DJs like Grooverider playing Nu Groove, Transmat, Trax, Warp. House one minute, techno the next, then some acid, then some Italian piano number etc... There didnt seem to be any boundaries becuase all the music was new to everyone. I remember sometimes the only oasis for us was Eddie Richard's crew would occasionally put something on in say Bletchley, they were always good. otherwise, it was the eclipse in coventry, or london... The Eclipse rocked! Although my regualar haunt was Sterns on the South coast. Anyone ever go there? Stu
Re: (313) Hardcore u no the score (was rob hall etc)
The MC's at raves circa late 89 were using the phrase hardcore back then, but the phrase happy hardcore hadnt been invented at that point as far as I knew of. I remember aroun d the time that music started getting a little harder with the likes of Cubik, Technarchy and then in thier wake all the hard Euro rave stuff that was coming out on Target and Music Man was considered 'hardcore'. It wasn't during that period around 91 when there were all the Fantasia raves and the like and there were 500+ uplifiting piano samples over a breakbeat and a female vocal tracks coming out every week that I started hearing the term 'happy hardcore'. - Original Message - From: fab. DJs at the time would play sets either mixing the two or have a happy hardcore set and a jungle set (e.g. Kenny Ken). Danny Breaks was one of many producers that crossed over. In fact the Essex jungle peeps (especially the Suburban Base crew) probably had the closest links to hardcore, though not necessarily the happy end of things. Early jungle comps such as Drum Bass Selection Vol 1: http://www.discogs.com/release/97955 illustrate the link quite well. At the time it was marketed as a DB compilation, but listening back the hardcore element is pretty strong. Suburban Base's 'The Joint' is probably another good example: http://www.discogs.com/release/157323 Check the Sonz Of Loop Da Loop Era (Danny Breaks) track for breakbeat madness! Having said all that, there was definitely a distinction between the stereotypical happy hardcore and DB fans. The former would be pilled up with their shirts off, jogging on the spot for hours on end, whereas the DB fans tended to be more into spliffs and punctuate standing around with the occassional burst of frenetic activity. Obviously it was more complicated than that though.. You wrote: This thread isn't long enough already in my opinion, so I'd like to add that I can't see much relation to happy hardcore and drum 'n' bass, (or 'jungle') although I do see how they evolved from similar origins.
Re: (313) Hardcore u no the score (was rob hall etc)
C'mon let's face it, hardcore, whether it was 'ardkore, or happy was a big pile of sh*t and had the musical content of a cheese sandwich. Yeah but most the hardcore stuff from back then was never meant to stand the test of time and have any great musical merit. It was largley made by people who liked doing Es and was made for people who liked doing Es. Maybe not all the time, but it was music that was all about the moment. Anyone who was caught up in that era such as myself will always find it hard to fully dismiss that music no matter how crap a lot of it sounds now because it was still the soundtrack to hundreds of pilled up nights that helped make me the person I am today. Yeah, I was digging a lot of 'better' music back then, but I haven't experienced many better buzzes in my life than being pilled up to the eyeballs and hearing $hit like Charlie for the first time. So what if it doesn't hold up musically, it made me wanna dance like a loon when I was 17 and there's something to be said for music that JUST does that and nothing more. Having said that though I do shudder when I think of what half my record collection back then sounds like! Stu
Re: (313) Hardcore u no the score (was rob hall etc)
Fair enough. For me the beginning of the end was when Charlie went on top of the pops. Dont get me wrong it wasnt the Charlie sample or anything that I liked, it was just hearing a sound that wasnt quite like any sound you had heard before for the first time. Ditto tracks like Cubik, Track with no name by Flowmasters and countless others that I cant think of off hand. I was perfectly able to go home and appreciate a bit of Model 500, Rhythim is Rhythim or Nexus 21 and then go mad to something like The Horn track down Sterns on a Saturday night. Well it was fronted by 2 people. They weren't actually responsible for any of the music though, so I can forgive them for that at least. As a side note and to add to the Carl Cox on that Techno film discussiuon a week or so back, I actually heard him play that 'techno, techno, techno' record they did at a Dance 91 party in Stevenage once. Re: (313) Slowing down (was Stasis)
Ive thought about this before. When I waa going pout in the late 80s early 90s I never once remember thinking 'man all this music is kinda slow', but now when I play some of the older stuff theres an automatic impulse to wanna pitch it up. I guess the transition is so gradual that you dont notice it happening, but the knock on effect is I probably jerk my body in various rhthmic motions at least twice as often in the course of a night now than I did 10 years ago! Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
I still find Carl Cox an odd choice of UK representation in a film such as this, sure he was playing some techno sets back in the day, but he was also playing garage, house, jungle, db, happy hardcore and just about anything else he could get booked for! Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
Well I knew Carl back when he was selling rave tickets from his flat in Brighton and heard him out often (It was hard to miss him in the late 80s early 90s) and I dont remember him once ever truly blowing me away. Sure he would do the whole 6 deck mixing thing and he was definatly one of the more competent mixers on the rave scene back then, but I always felt his track selection, whatever genre he was playing, was just too obvious and uninspired. Its as if he always had ambitions to be a radio friendly figure and always played the 'big' tunes. I dunno, maybe I'm being harsh, but I just feel as both an artist and a DJ he has always left me cold. If they really wanted a big recognisable UK name to be represented on the movie then Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe. Re: (313) ..earth calling francis....or other berlin goers....
Yeah although when Basic Channel played behind a screen at Lost it was alongside Jeff Mills DJ set, who wasnt behind a screen. At least thats how I remember it. Anyway, one of the most intense DJ performances I've seen recently was Dan Curtin. He didnt dance or sing or acknowledge the crowd in any way, but he didnt stop tweaking knobs, moving sliders, cuing records for one second during his set and it was fascinating to see him so focussed in creating a seamless set of blinding music, which is all I really want at the end of the day. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 15, 2005 2:50 PM Subject: Re: (313) ..earth calling francisor other berlin goers First off, what a load of boll*cks. nice touch Martin. While I see Robins point of view (its just what some people want to see - nowt wrong with that), I just dont subscribe to this theory. My mate saw Basic Channel live at Lost, behind a screen. Awesome he said. Moodymann played behind a sheet in Manchester. No difference there either.. Kraftwerk, stood still, didnt move a jot in 2 ours of a live show. Possibly the most stunning thing I've ever seen in my life. Well not to jump the gun too early I got a few things due out this year.
