Re: [313] Jeff Mills interview on-line

2001-11-14 Thread M. Todd Smith
Great point! Doesn't dub predate hip hop though? It was low-tech on big
soundsystems. The only factor it doesn't seem to inherit is the
post-industrial attribute, but then again my knowledge of the roots of dub
are few and far between. Though I'd love to read about it, any suggestions
LKS?

Name me one physicist who looks at everything around them as a number, and I
will grant you one insane physicist. We are still human, we still see trees

people take for granted.

And? At one point we thought the earth was flat, so we learn diffferently
through using our imaginations, and trial and error that we would not indeed
fall of the face of the earth. The reason your able to do more than half
the imaginative things you think you are doing today is because of physics
and other sciences. Imagination is half the process of figuring out a new
equation or possible theory. The other half consists of a strong mind, and
the ability to learn. Something many of us in today's society severely
lack, because we are too comfortable, and have far too many other things to
do.
As for Plato and Socrates teaching those that would listen, they got paid,
they taught rich kids, if you think they didn't you haven't read enough

Gadgets were awesome in there first few releases, Parallel is still my
favourite, followed
by the extremely hard to find LP (which is Various Artists but contains some
Gadgets material)
'Users and The Gadgets' feat Gadgets, Sasse, Question (M. Carola), Mr.
Hazeltine rmx'ed by
Mannequin Lung and more. Unfortunately since Gagdets "Blue" (their last
really good release) the releases have become glorified Carola takeoffs
utilizing the same sound and feel as some of the Question tracks. Gadgets is
(aka Corrado Izzo owner of i220 records), find some of his older stuff if
you like Parallel alot, anything below Gadjets 9 is good, the On/Off stuff
is definitely solid but more in the Question vein again. In fact almost all
the Gadgets records I do like are colloborations with Bernard Maus (of Maus
& Stolle fame). To get ahold of their backcatalogue I would guess at
Hardwax (www.hardwax.com)

Re: [313] OT Gas,Sturm...?

2001-11-07 Thread M. Todd Smith
I thought the question was for stuff like Gas and Sturm?

Kitty Yo may posses some pop ambient in the darker vein, but not a lot.
Ware and Dial are both
good minimal-tech house labels but put out no ambient. Porter Ricks
'Biomechaniks' on Force is a wonderfully disturbing album full of beat
juxtaposition, and grainy noise. DIN puts out some of the finest IDM but is
by no means ambient, even the Monolake release is a dubby breakbeat affair.
Pole's stuff is again close but still a dub beat oriented. The Scape label
has never put out an ambient release, all releases thus far have been in the
IDM/lounge range.

The pop ambient stuff on kompakt is certainly fitting. Of the releases
before Kompakt 30 only the Dettinger LP's are similar to Gas and Sturm.
After KOM 30, the release schedule seems interspersed with pop ambient.
There was also a Gas release in around KOM 40-45, its not quite the same as
'Pop' more guitars and more subtle beats. The Traum label is certainly
similar, though only half the releases are strictly ambient (mostly the
Phillipe Cam releases) and they have been moving towards a tech-house feel
as well. There is also an excellent Stewart Walker EP on Mille Plateaux
called 'Granular Synthesis' which features completely unsequenced synth
ambience. As well some of the latter Chain Reaction pieces come to mind,
Matrix, Hallucinator, Fluxion and V. Delay all have EP's with some ambience
on them (the Fluxion LP 'Bi-Polar Defect' is my favourite). There is also a
whole range of microsound'ish stuff that I have yet to explore but promises
to be much in the same vein.

Re: [313] Hawtin + Aphex Twin -> NY Times

2001-11-05 Thread M. Todd Smith
I'm sure someone will think this is a great article, but with lines like :
___

One song, "Kladfvgbung Micshk," uses a prepared piano for both the rhythm
and the melody, and this suggestion - that a rhythm instrument can have a
melodic value, and vice versa - creates a sense of ambiguity that hovers
over the whole album: we're often not quite sure whether we're hearing a
beat or a tone.
___

WTF! Of course a rhythm instrument can have a melodic value, considering
the writer is paying close attention to RDJ's use of the piano, he/she
should at least know something about the piano, or maybe the guitar, bass,
drums, etc. All rhythm instruments have tones, a beat IS a tone.

I would really like to know what Final Scratch had to do with DE9 2, besides
being an influence on it (whatever that means). The best part of the
article is definitely: (the author is speaking of Hawtin's use of a Phillipe
Cam record)
___
It's a shame there aren't more surprises like that. Too much of "Closer to
the Edit" rushes by without making much of an impression; its amalgamated
thump never shows any signs of letting up.

___

Glad someone is paying attention.

Cheers

Are you ready for the Final Scratch price tag of $23,000?

I would rather take my chances cutting dubs on the Kingston Dubplate Cutter.

They will probably be shipping in 6 months or so, and they are only $5000.

Better yet I'll save my money to do something fabulous. Like treat my

Take your pick

I personally think Sven Vath and the boys at Harthouseand EyeQ kept the
techno-trance schism at bay for some time Sven Vath's 1995 'Touch Themes',
which is remixes of Vath's 'Harlequin' 'Robot' & 'Ballet Dancer' is very
much still techno. Speedy J's first two LP's are very trancey in nature,
but still firmly rooted in techno.

Goa did make a big impact though and made the music much easier to pigeon
hole into categories in the latter years. Now progressive is borrowing
largely from tech-house. In fact many techno producers are starting to show
up on trance/progressive labels (Selway & uggh Smith on Hooj? Rino Cerrone
on Saw? Carl Finlow on Bedrock?)

Re: [313] Astralwerks - Detroit Beyond the 3rd Wave LP

2001-10-19 Thread M. Todd Smith
Yes, this recently got repressed by Astralwerks, if your into the Detroit
sound then this is a great comp. The Claude Younge track 'Impolite to
Refuse' which begins the album is certainly a must have, on par with his
Project 625 material on Dow (even better IMHO). I used to start all my
Detroity sets with this track. Tonnes of percussion, squelchy bass and
wonderful (WONDERFUL) melodies.

Sean Deason's 'Vortex' does much the same for me, classic Detroit sounds.
Another guaranteed player.

Shake's ' Sandblaster has a beautiful arppegiated bass wobble, and a dirty
snare/ kick combo, combined with another killer piano line and some
chanting.

The middle part of the LP heads for electro country bagning it out with a
classic Ectomorph tune, and the absolutely f***in essential Will Web "Like
on Tek (Bumpin down Jefferson Mix). When I was in the D for first DEMF we
went bumpin down Jefferson Ave, with that tune cranked, it all became clear.
If you get this comp for any one tune it should be this one. If Andy C's
'Valley of Shadows (31 seconds)' is the essential junglist tune, then Will
Web's 'life on tek' is comparable for the electro elite.

The last part of the LP is to me, what suffers. The T-1000, Terrence Dixon
and Mode Selector (Fanon Flowers) tracks, showcase the bleepy, and hard part
of Detroit. The tracks are a good view into what was happening in that
particular vein of techno in Detroit at that time, but in comparison to the
musicality of the rest of the LP, they just don't stand out.

An essential LP IMHO, I sold mine to pay rent a few years back, and now I
have it again!

Now anyone want to part with their Deepest Shades of Techno Compilations on
vinyl? Better yet anyone know of any stores that might still have these in
stock? Not bloody likely but at least I'm trying :)

Re: [313] Planetary Assault Systems

2001-10-19 Thread M. Todd Smith
As a huge Slater fan, I must say while the output sounds a little dated, its
still excellent, and there seems to be a severe juxtaposition in the realm
of techno where if it doesn't sound 'new' or at least current, its not
noteworthy anymore.

Personally I find the somewhat old schoolish nature of this release quite
refreshing when compared to the output of the latest wave of techno greats
(ie Redhead, Marco Bailey, Umek, SLS, Ben Sims, Hardcell, etc.). I truly
miss all the great twisted Roland X0X production that used to occur and
Slater has always been able to bang those boxes with the best of them.
'twelve' takes me back to that old Rob Hood shuffle circa M-Plant 5-9. The
sample is hilarious and keeps the track bouncy, despite its darker nature.
The remix of 'Booster', and 'Atomic' are phenomenal and once you've heard
either on a big system you'll agree Luke's still got funk. 'I am the
funkster' shows that Slater still knows how to use drones for maximum
effect, shimmering, dizzying drones, and a nice melody line too.

Mind you, I only like 5 of the 9 tracks, the others aren't quite doing it
for me.

I can't wait to hear that mix though. :)

Cheers

Re: [313] killer! of a label.

2001-10-10 Thread M. Todd Smith
The website for Killer is www.killer3000.com

Adam's a great guy, and if you ever have the chance to see him DJ check him
out, he'll wipe the floor with most anybody. He used to play in Detroit
once in a while back in 95-98. He also has an EP out on dumb-unit
(www.dumb-unit.com) another great canadian label run by Jeremy Caufield
a.k.a DJ Lotus. Even more info can be dug out from www.techno.ca as well as
www.roundtablemusic.com  .

Not all releases have that big room techno sound. The Format stuff (the
first four mentioned by Vince) have a distinct Detroit minimal bleepy feel
to them, while the latter two releases (Papa Ceo's & The Golden Star EP's)
go for a more dark tribal feel. One or two of the Format releases were
charted by Jeff Mills last year, and are definitely worth listening to.

The Chair recordings stuff is also very touched by Detroit, inspired more so
by Rob Hood, yet maintaining it's own feel and direction (which is
surprising considering the number of artists who believe influence is just
another way of saying 'sounds exactly like').

I would really love to get ahold of more of Fabrice's stuff as well as
Titonton's, anyone know who distributes Titonton's label Residual? It's
pretty hard to find up here in Canada, but I would love to get it into the
store.

Anyone know if Deepest Shades of Techno vol. 1 & 2 came out on vinyl? I
have the cd version but what I wouldn't do for all those tunes on vinyl!
DAMN!

Maybe we should get Fabrice to do a fan club mailout of all his records.

Re: [313] DJ Magda

2001-09-19 Thread M. Todd Smith

Again the cynic delivers another crushing blow to Detroit. Why can't you
assume Rich actually thinks she's a good DJ?. I've seen Magda three times
now and have been nothing but impressed everytime. I have a great funky
mixed disc that she put out, and it is phenomenal. Track selection has a
lot to do with being a good dj (in fact before mixing was involved track
selection is what made you a DJ).

Your somewhat sexists stance only makes you seem ignorant.

buying the cd's so the artists make some money. If you complain that you
can't get distribution in your area, your not trying hard enough, you have
the web in the palm of your hand, and there aren't that many record labels
without websites anymore, and if they don't have one some web based company
sells their cd's anyways.

Re: [313] DE9 closer

2001-08-31 Thread M. Todd Smith
There's nothing next level about DE9 'Closer to the Edit', only the fact
that all the people who have done it before him
have either 1. Never been noticed in the first place. or 2. Got noticed but
have long since been forgotten.

A great many producers (hip-hop, trip-hop, breaks etc.) consistently use
this process to create tracks, Richie has simply made 31 tracks
in the same vein, segued them together and called it 'innovation' (His
publicist spin I'm sure..).

I've listened to the recording alot lately, it sounds like an experiment, no
flow, just tracks, intended for the mind to bounce along too. The Gescom MD
was certainly much more interesting, this still posseses linearity.

Rich uses what seems like a lot of Perlon (I know two or three for sure),
but in the most linear fashion possible. He could have made some awesome
breakdown edits (to let the music breathe), or to give it an added
'wanna-bust-a-move' attitude, but instead he kept it pretty thumping (making
it seem tracky,
and boring).

Like the last DE9 this one won't be in my collection, though I'm sure I'll
hear enough of it everywhere I go.

Thanks, that was somewhat informative, but saying punk was heavily
influenced by Dub and Reggae because The Clash wrote some jams and they were
influenced by it, does not mean the entire genre was. Unless of course you
are saying The Clash were the progenitors of punk, but that's a whole other
ball of wax.

There was also a great remix package of that album featuring Alter Ego,
Underworld, Speedy J, Bzet, Hardfloor and Aural Float. Combined both the
album and the remixes define an important era of electronic music, where
pigeon holing was something the critics tried to do but failed at, and
everybody dug MUSIC instead of a specific genre.

I really miss that era.

Re: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)

2001-08-15 Thread M. Todd Smith
Jayson,

Your forgetting another large point, not only must every DJ spend a large
chunk of money on records and equipment already, but in order to utilize
final scratch you have to have a mid ranged laptop, the software and the
hardware. To many DJ's adding another $2000-3000 to the already large
equipment list will probably deter most local and small time DJ's getting
into something like this. It will be a long time before Final Scratch
becomes the norm for a party or a club. FS' audience is limited to high
paid DJ's and tech headz. Record labels don't really make money off large
name DJ's (since most get a bunch of stuff on promo), and tech headz are
probably already using Traktor to mix mp3's.

QRe: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)

2001-08-15 Thread M. Todd Smith
While I agree with what Lauryn has said for the most part (because we have
already seen the effect of Napster on the music industry). We must include
one more particularily special point.

MP3 Quality at less than a bit rate of 192 sounds shoddy on the extreme low
end and extreme high end. MP3 is a compression algorithm which lops off the
signal at the extent of the human hearing range (ie 20, 000 Hz but most
codecs lop off around 16, 000), and the sub-extent of human hearing (around
20hz but again most codecs lop off around 100Hz). When listening at home
this isn't so bad since most in home stereo systems already reduce extreme
low-high end by means of a crossover either in the speaker itself or
digitally in the amplifier. At the club however the is no roll off, and
things like these become more apparent.

Worse is the fact that despite our inability to hear these frequencies, we
can hear the harmonics that they create with frequencies we do hear.
Moreover even without knowledge the producer of the track may have utilized
those particular harmonics. With MP3 those will never be heard.

I've heard both MP3's and vinyl on the same system, and to be honest unless
you have a good soundcheck and all your files are recorded and EQ'ed
properly beforehand, your set will sound lackluster.

MP3's with a bitrate higher than 192 sound great, the higher the better, but
they take up more room. As we progress into a generation where physical
memory is no longer an issue I'm sure this will become more viable.

Jim,

All I can say is thank god, someone else remembers when you could go into a
shop listen to 20 different records
and be surprised at how different each record sounded. While there is still
some serious innovation going on in techno
I truly miss the ingenuity of early 90's techno, how people would thrive on
hearing diversity (and I don't mean just techno).
Producers these days seem more satisfied to sit on a certain sound (call it
a style if you will), moreover more and more producers
are bandwagoning particular styles or sounds (air frog? anyone else tired of
that yet). When big name *respected* producers just bang
on a particular sound it gives little inspiration for those that follow (and
they do exist, and they do do these things) to do little else.

I do see a change in the tide now though, as someone stated in an earlier
post, there has been a slight return to musicality. To which I'm really
quite happy, drum traxx were great as long as they didn't comprise a whole
DJ set. I must say that the one producer who I have followed religously
since the early 90's and who has always been innovative, fresh and new is
Troy Geary aka DJ Slip. This man has never put out two records that sound
alike, and his early work on Missle (like 'Sketches v.2) used to pump crowds
in Toronto all the time. I don't remember the last time I made a techno or
IDM
mix without using a DJ Slip record! Others I've been watching for a while:
Exos, Villalobos (his new mixed cd is wicked!), Stewart Walker, Oscar
Mulero,
Hakan Libdo (though his output of late has been thumbs down).

Shades of Jae, and a large number of other Moodymann titles have been
repressed at least twice (last summer for sure, and once before that in
recent memory).

Let's face facts:
1. Record pressing plants want to make money
ergo
they press the records people pay them to press.
2. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Ughhh,

I mentioned it a few weeks back when I got it on promo at the shop.
Compared to his earlier work this LP is crud, the rhymes are weak (could we
rhyme a little more about weed? Cmon.) and the production is subpar when
compared to his last LP. I love all the earlier stuff and I was really
anticipating this LP but after many listens I still can't get my groove on
to more than two tracks.

The new Poets of Rhythm "Discern/Define" on Big Dada however is funk fuelled
craziness with a great laidback attitude. Also watch out for the new Aesop
Rock LP comin out in Sept called 'Labor Day' better than 'Float' and crazier
than 'Appleseed'

Re: [313] Tiga

2001-07-30 Thread M. Todd Smith
Tiga is a great DJ from Montreal, with a recent mixed cd released through
Turbo, and as mentioned the rmx of Corey Hart (another Canadian!). Tiga has
been laying it down for as long as I can remember and probably before (which
means at least 10 years). An incredible DJ don't miss this performance.

You can listen to a bit of Tiga's mix at

Re: [313] Moby, underground techno

2001-07-25 Thread M. Todd Smith
POP!

Oh I can't wait til we see Berislav in the big lights headlining the "I MADE
IT" festival. Yes Berislav's latest tune "I am Underground" has gone double
platinum overnight!! Berislav has been invited to make millions of dollars
touring with a full orchestra and a bus full of grill cheese sandwiches.

But don't fret folks because everyone knows that artists who go double
platinum have MILLIONs of dollars to spend, and don't need or want their
music to be heard by anyone. Why would Bersilav sell his music to
advertisements when he can eat all those grill cheese sandwiches on the bus?

Shit happens, roll with the punches, or kill yourself like Kurt Kobain.

2001-07-24 Thread M. Todd Smith
I hope you all get large and have to deal with a dozen interviews a week.
Then we'll see who's an ass and who isn't. FBS is british what the f***
does he care about XFL. Out of the three interviews that I've read with
him, he appears to be totally into his gear (especially his sampler), and
enjoys hanging out at his house and making music. Could any of you wish for
anything more? Or maybe he should more concerned about global issues? Like
Moby, that self righteous SOB who's been a marketing tool for the industry
for so long now? Do you think Moby labels himself techno? It's the
industry people that label everything, open your freaking eyes! We call it
what we want, journalists call it what they think everyone will understand
it to be (write for the lowest common denominator, christ aren't half of you
people journalists anyways?).

Some people seem to have problems when people on this list talk about DJ XYZ
(from Detroit's) bad drug habit, or how f***ed he/she looked when playing
out last night, or moreover how insanely egotistical they've become in the
last three years. However the same people have nothing to say in defence of
international artists who don't hit so close to home (with the exception of
Cyclone, who is probably the most professional and loving person I've never
had the chance of meeting).

As for the phrase 'throwaway pop music' how many people are going to be able
to remember what 'Rockafella Skank' sounds like three years from now? How
many people are going to remember what Kenny Larkin's 'Solace' sounds like?
'Throwaway pop music' is a relative term and could apply to your tunes
tommorow. Wouldn't that make you sad?

Re: [313] What's the buzz?

2001-07-23 Thread M. Todd Smith
Ok,

Things to consider:

Did you check to see if the buzz occured when either table was playing
through the mixer?
** if it's one table or the other than your problem is with either the table
or the channel on the mixer.

Did you check to make sure that your tables are grounded securely?
**sometimes a little roughness on the mixer can loosen them.

Did you try changing the table to another channel? Is there still a hum?
**if it's a hum that occurs on all channels with either table, and your sure
your groundlines are properly connected, then it's a problem in your
mixer->amp path.

Tighten all connections!
**loose connections can easily be loosened further.

Give me more specs about your setup (ie.1200's?, amp? speakers? how it's all
connected?)

Re: Re: [313] curious?

2001-07-18 Thread M. Todd Smith
Jayson I guess you missed lingo 101 last thursday so here's the update on
funk and soul:

funk: the groove that makes your body move
soul: the emotion you feel from the music

funk and soul have nothing to do with 'good' and 'solid'. In fact someone
can mix with a plethora of funk and soul and still not be good or solid.

if a track contains no funk or soul that it would probably not move or touch
a crowd, it becomes the forgettable classic. The song you can't sing in
your head, is the one you forget most often.

Re: [313] The Music We Cherish or Peacefrog Compilation Info.

2001-07-03 Thread M. Todd Smith
I have the vinyl version with 5 pieces as I stated before, the missing trax
are:

Chris Brann: Journey to the Centre
Glenn Underground: Entercourse of the New Age
Placid Angles: Everything Under the Sun.

If you received only four pieces you are missing a piece of the actual set!,
return it to your retailer and get your money back or get the whole set. If
your set was sealed then this is a mess up at the at pressing and you should
be able to get your money back, or exchange for a full set. Don't let this
slip your missing out on some great trax!

Re: [313] DEMF highlights

2001-05-29 Thread M. Todd Smith
I was at the Sound Signature party. Great stuff too bad about the bouncy
system though KDJ sure laid it down tight! I know Theo was supposed to play
but I didn't see him, I left after KDJ's set and at that point there had
been only 3 DJ's (Ky ace (sp?), ??? and KDJ) anyone know who the second DJ
was with the Michigan cap on?

Re: [313] soundhack/soundstream

2001-05-28 Thread M. Todd Smith
I had the first two releases mailed to me from a friend in Koln. I believe
they were Hardwax only releases, so you have to go through them.

www.hardwax.com

They have the first two Soundhacks and the first release on Soundstream in
their catalogue of D Labels. Anyone going to check out the
Substance/Soundhack/Safety Scissors show tonight in Detroit? I'd love to
hear a review of that as I had to come home to hand in an assignment.

Re: [313] spam [OT]

2001-05-15 Thread M. Todd Smith
Start unsubbing from everything, never enter your proper email address for
anything (either that or start a hotmail junk account so that the scripts
can actually process your email address, make sure you look at the hotmail
account once every couple of weeks otherwise it will be deleted.) If you
fill out a survey don't enter your address or anythign else that can somehow
link it back to you (remember if they have your name and address chances are
they can find your email addy too.) Sending copies to domain admins usually
elicits no response or annoyance, they made it so you could unsub for a
reason, don't bug them with that stuff.

Hope all this helps

Re: [313] did richie's mom write this?

2001-05-10 Thread M. Todd Smith
Jason,

Your tax dollars may not be going directly to Canadian Law enforcement, but
if your American your are contributing by drinking Canadian water and (in
California) using Canadian hydro-electric power. If I'm correct (someone
corrrect me if I'm not) both water works and hydro-electric power aren't yet
privatized in the States. Therefore your federal tax dollars are being
doled out to Canada for these commodities. It's a stickler's view but we do
share the largest border in the world which pretty much means that in some
way or another we share everything.

Re: [313] 313 stand on....

2001-05-05 Thread M. Todd Smith
Phonopsia wrote:
I love old Landstrumm from the Peacefrog days. Played some tonight. Since
then a lot of it has been "close but no cigar" for me. His contribution to
one of the New Electronica comps was quite nice and a good change of pace
though. The Blue Arsed Fly stuff was nice too. I don't think Russ
Gabrielle's "In The Bag" remix has ever strayed too far from my crate (not
that that really counts).
~~~
Tristan your missing out on some of Landstrumm's best moments;  Praline
Horse, Bedrooms & Cities, Misunderstanding Disinformation (all on Tresor)
all contain some great Landstrumm gems, not to mention his Sativae output,
which  may sound a little dated now but still pumps a crowd well.  Lately
I've been really digging some downtempo tunes he's produced with Si Begg on
Mosquito (the label Russ initially heard Blue Arse Fly on to sign them to
Ferox).
Vogel on the other hand, was hit an miss for me, I love 'Lock onto Signal'
off of Tresor 5, but dislike most of his other Tresor output, with a few
exceptions, mainly 'Don't Take More' off of "All Music Has come to an End"
and 'Tearing the Groove" shows a side of Vogel I would love to hear a whole
LP by.  Which his newest work Rescate 137, comes closer to doing, and if I
could ever find it on vinyl I would snatch it up.  For the most part though
I just don't understand his concepts, but then again I'm sure I'm not the
only one.  He's quoted as saying "I make music  for f***ed up people".  Go
figure.
Si Begg has had a big hand in what Landstrumm and Vogel have put together,
and has been around since the Mosquito days (him and Vogel did 2 records on
Trope called Inevitech TR007 and TR011, I'm still looking for these and will
pay good money or trade).  He is weirder than anyone else in the No Future
camp, and has no fear of breaking the boundaries on what is and isn't music.
His concepts are clearer on his Cabbagehead material (check out 'Commercial
Suicide' for the most laughable product oriented track ever), but he too can
be quite deluded.  He sticks mostly to abstract breakbeats now (producing
for Skint and under his Buckfunk3000 guise).  Remember 'All the Way In' by
Bigfoot (feat. on Laurent Garnier's Laboratoire mix), that was Si.  I love
that tune.   His most recent output was "The Noodles Foundation presents:
The Death of Cool part 2" it is basically Si doing what he does best:
f***ing sh*t up!
Berkovi, is a gearhead and writes for Future Music.  I've tried to collect
most of his output but I'm beginning to wane on it.  Especially after his
'Charm Hostel' LP came out on Force Inc. a couple of years back.  Great
producer limited by his need to be weird.
Tobias Schmidt's latest LP 'Dark of Heartness' is his best work ever IMHO,
there's no need to look back on what he has done before, same goes for
Tarrida and his latest opus 'Paranoid'.
I hate Subhead and SuperCollider really didn't hit me either.
Sorry to blather on about this, these guys really interest me though.  They
have been pioneering the weirder end of techno for so long and making it
stand out so that when labels like Perlon come along and put out some wack
ass sh*t we all think it sounds great!  Their impact on techno is far
reaching, and we will be reaping the rewards of their past output's
influence upon future generations for some time to come.
Re: [313] detroit-toronto bus
2001-04-30 Thread M. Todd Smith
Actually I was wrong it Mutek IS the weekend after DEMF, but to confirm for
Tristan, it most certainly is not in Toronto.  Go to www.mutek.ca for
yourself and see the lineup, peruse a well made site.
As for Toronto nightlife John, it's bright as ever.  Overflowing actually
with everything you could ask for.  A good place to start looking is the
Tribe message board at www.tribe.ca   Tribe is T.O's local party magazine,
and while the message board can look a little out of hand you will definetly
find what you want there.  I can tell you right now that on June 1st Herbert
will be in town along with Ric y Martin (Ricardo Villalobos and Dandy Jack)
live, as well as local house/techno killer Adam Marshall with a live Cuban
Band (sorry I forget their name) and my personal favourite Zuzanna Grimm.
Hope that helps and I'm sure with a little research you will find a lot
more!
Re: [313] detroit-toronto bus
2001-04-30 Thread M. Todd Smith
WEMF is in July, there is no Memorial Day weekend in Canada, that's a US
only holiday.  The weekend before that is a Canadian holiday.  Last year
WEMF sucked because of the crappy location and weather.  It is a trance
festival with a small amount of techno thrown in.
The I-dance rally is probably what someone who posted ran into last year.
It was a rally to show the Toronto Mayor who at the time was trying to get
electronic music parties banned forever, that this music is more than it's
worst parts.  It was a great party.
The same weekend as DEMF is Mutek in Montreal, a great showcase of the
minimalistic talent from T.O Montreal and all over.  Last year it was the
weekend after DEMF but I believe it was moved this year.
I'm still down with the selkasarii (sp?) tracks part 1 and 2, on Fcomm.
These were some of my seminal deep record purchases from way back in the
day.  Jori has done a whole lot more since then but these tracks still drip
with soul.
Re: [313] The Metropolis Saga
2001-04-26 Thread M. Todd Smith
Actually, the cd was released on Tresor, but Jeff only let them press some
of the tracks on vinyl (I believe three tracks were given to the Tresor
vinyl release).  Six more tracks were released on Axis under the same name.
AFAIK there was never a 2x12" on Axis.  The cd still has more tracks than
both vinyl versions together.
Re: [313] Mark Broom / Baby Ford / Dave Hill / etc ...
2001-04-26 Thread M. Todd Smith
Baby Ford has done a bunch of great stuff.  I find the earlier Ifach stuff
that he released to be better than that of late, however he's also done some
great stuff on Klang and a superb e.p for Elektro Music Dept.
Broom and Hill have hundreds of releases under guises like Rue East and
Sympletic and all of the different guises Broom used for Ifach (eggs is
eggs, brubaker).  Essential Broom is most assuredly the 'Angie is a
Shoplifter' LP on Pure Plastic.  To me this is the height of Broom's genius,
great programming, groovability and moving song structure.  Also try and
track down the Mark Broom record on Mosaic, it's pretty sweet.  All the Rue
East stuff seems to blend together in my mind.  There are a number of good
ep's out by them on Pure Plastic, the last of which has some great twists to
it.  They share the same sound as Sims and every other tribal tech artist
now though, time to move on, or do something different, it's 2001.
2001-04-11 Thread M. Todd Smith
Just checked with www.circonium.de  I was going by Sonic Grooves database (I
was in a hurry and I usually have it open at work in the record store).
Ploy was M1 and Lyot M2, apparently however they were released in '92.  The
first CR record by Scion (emerge) was released in '95.
As always never trust Sonic Groove for anything. :)
Re: [313] Before you dis Moby....
2001-03-28 Thread M. Todd Smith
So do you call Ben Sims, SLS, Paul Mac, Mark Broom, The Cause and every
other producer who is currently producing tribal techno using the same sound
and sample base techno?
What would you call over 20 records by said producers being unequivocably
recognizable as a single track remixed 20 times.  This is 'pop'; simulation
without thought or feeling; reduce reuse recycle; garbage.  Sure they are
great tools but as an artist they are just other peoples ideas barely
reinterpreted.  Much like me reproducing the work of my roomate and selling
it.
 This is the techno equivalent of copying the alternative 'Seattle' sound.
Techno comprimises just like everything else.  Get it straight it's a
business.  Jeez let's remember Rich's DEFX909 was in HMV's top 20 for over 6
weeks, along with Brittney, Nsync and MOBY!!
Note:  I am not a spokesperson for Moby and like I said earlier for the most
part none of us have ever met Moby personally, and have only his media
presence to judge him by.  Judging him by what one person on 313 says is
like eating white bread because Uncle Sam told ya it was good for you (but
he didn't tell you it was enriched using cow's blood as a fortify agent did
he?).
Re: [313] Before you dis Moby....
2001-03-27 Thread Todd Smith
Ok,
You've all had a great laugh at Moby, and man I bet he's just crying.  None
of you know the man, most of you have never seen his face other than on T.V.
So what do you know about him?  What he feeds to the media?  Let's print off
everything aybody ever says on this list and hold them to it for the rest of
their lives.  Get off your horse!  People change.  I've gone through so many
musical shifts in my lifetime it's uncanny, and I'm sure the whole lot of
you grew up with techno too right?  Please.
Take away the definition of the artist, take away the words and the
interviews, the commercials and the movies.  They are all just money making
schemes of the music industry.  Now listen to the music.  Just the music.
Is it all that bad?  Can you not feel some emotion emanating from it?
RE: White boy stole gospel samples and makes mockery of oppression.  This is
a load of crap, with all the makings of bad religous overtones and racism
galore.  It's funny, in the cd copy of 'Play' I have beside me now all the
samples are acknowledged in the liner notes and moreover the songs capture a
playful nature with subtle longing underneath. Make of this what you will
but it seems to connect in a lot of ways.
I first heard 'Porcelain' in a commercial for Bailey's Irish Cream.  I first
heard several other tracks on the album while watching 'The Beach".  I liked
these songs, and I didn't know who the artist was.  Moreover I still don't
care that it was Moby, it's good music.
I don't usually feel this compelled to stick up for anybody, but jeez, you
would love to think that Moby is a narrow minded prick.   Maybe it's all of
you who can't get past the media surrounding him, or the fact that he's
using his music to make himself some cash (God forbid and artist use his/her
work to make money).  A good foil for this would be Mr. Hawtin, who despite
not saying much to the media has fed you all the biggest lie: DEFX909.  It's
a great recording, but contains nothing that you all hold so dear about it
ie. it's mixed by a computer (pro tools), and there is no FX and no 909.
It's all a lie and you've let yourselves be taken.  Rich too is trying to
grab some cash while he can, he knows techno won't be fresh forever and that
being a professional DJ isn't a lifelong career.  He has simply taken a
different route to the same goal; cash grab.
Techno has pigeon holed itself as I predicted it would back in 93.  Back
then so much more was acceptable, it wasn't as defined and made producing
techno for Moby much more interesting.  Since techno has been overdefined by
the headz and the critics, Moby no longer fits the mold.  He wants to go
play in other fields as well.  Rich is going to suck techno dry.  He had to
play last at DEMF last year though Derrick deserved it more than anyone
else.  He couldn't be recorded because he knows he's a limited commodity.
Open your eyes people its the music industry and you know what they say
"When in Rome, do as the Romans".
Think before typing, your shoes are not your own
peel em if you got 'em
2001-03-11 Thread Todd Smith
Labels...take them off keep them on, who the f**k cares.  Do you honestly
think one DJ taking labels off a record is going to impede someone from
finding out what it is?
Tonnes of people flock to record stores everyday in search of that track
that so and so played the other night, they usually don't know what label
it's on or who it's by (remember an 8 point font on a record spinning at 33
and one third r.p.m's equals much dizziness when trying to read in a low
light situation).  They simply listen, and that's what techno has always
been about; the music.  Discovering that wicked track you heard at the club
last week is half the fun of buying records.  If I went out and knew exactly
what I was looking for all the time I wouldn't have half as much fun, and I
would feel  anal for having to always have every tidbit of information at my
fingertips.
Discovery is half the process, and most of the fun.  There's more to be said
about finding that special record, then knowing what it is a grabbing it off
the shelf
[THE BUSINESS POINT OF VIEW]
Realize this.  As the number of producers grows, fewer of them will sell a
great number of records.  As the number of DJ's grow, the number of records
sold will increase.  If your record is good, it will sell.  Also the number
of records made are usually limited, so chances are the record will come
close to, or will sell out if it's any good.
I don't remember the producers paying the DJ to play his records, in fact
last gig I played it was the promoter of the party who paid me, not all the
fine people at Tresor, Kanzleramt etc.  I search out great records to play
in my set.  If everyone played them yet didn't have to spend all the time I
did discovering them (countless hours I can't imagine how much time I spend
in record stores). Then that would make me less of a commodity, and take my
work away from me.
Note:  I don't take the labels off all my records, but nor do I go out f my
way to let people know what they are.  I do plug local artists and let
people know about them all the time.  In addition I'm a firm believer in the
don't bother the dj while he/she is playing.  Imagine if you were playing in
a band and some guy just walked up and started asking you questions while
you were playing.  It's just rude.
Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
2001-03-07 Thread Todd Smith
That's funny..
I run a P3 733MHz with 128Mb of ram and have never ever had a recording
failure, but the average problems are clipping and defragmentation.
I use a 20GB partitioned drive and send all audio to the non-OS partition.
You should always up your system virtual memory and never point it to your
OS partition.  This is accomplished through the System Icon under the
Control Panel.
I would also recommend getting all the Windows updates for Win98, and
regularly look for more.  Uncle Microsoft is still pulling it apart and
fixing problems inherent in the DOS layer.
Re: [313] Phryl?
2001-03-02 Thread M. Todd Smith
As a long time member/resident dj with phryl I can tell you:
Mayor Mel Lastman of Toronto put a standing ban on raves due to a death
at a hullabuloo party a couple years back.   This shoved everything to do
with electronic music into the club scene.  Phryl picked up the wrong
club at the wrong time, and then Phil wanted a vacation from the scene.
Viktor may still have some plans for phryl, but the website now is
certainly well
Re: [313] curious on opinions
2001-03-01 Thread Todd Smith
Thank you everybody who wrote in reply to my asking for new and innovative
house music out there, but I must in fact ask another more abrupt question
to get seemingly where I want to go.  First off some details:
Like Ani I work in a record store and I'm responsible for ordering techno,
house, minimal and lounge.  I'm looking for innovative fresh sounds.  I
currently own almost all of the Klang/Playhouse/Perlon backcatalogue and
I've listened to every Glasgow/Paper/GU release.  Like everyone else I'm a
huge Herbert fanatic, and really dig most stuff that sounds like him.
My current problem with house is the lack of innovation right now (with a
few exceptions).  Not just in use of sounds but presentation of sounds.  The
advent of organic sounding house (ie. sampled drums and noises) has left no
clearly definable frequency space in the music.  While this creates a nice
flow to the music as all the frequency ranges seem to just gel together, it
leaves no room for any individual sound to breath, and thusly mixing these
types of tracks together sounds muddy but warm, or as I like to call it 'a
comfortable distraction'.
In opposition is the dry/minimal approach, giving each sound far too much
room to breath.  There may be a groove but it seems that upon closer
inspection the sounds just bleed themselves dry with little to no
interaction.  This is usually deemed 'boring'.
The current dilemma I'm facing is that labels like GU/I records/Paper etc.
are either getting just far too wanky (ie. instrumental solo after solo on
and on), or like Perlon/Klang etc just to absorbed by things like quick
edits and breakdowns to remember that a groove needs to be created (I call
this 'wankin the rhythm').  Mix these to things together and you get
abstract electronic music equivalent to fusion jazz, not bad to listen to
once an a while but definetely not something to dance to.
So to rephrase my question I'm looking for some good house/minimal akin to
the last Hakan Libdo release on Paper.  I want to hear about those most
solid records with great sounds and smooth edits (not the typical reverse
crash cymbal to piano/guitar/vocal/ambient that TOO many house producers are
knocking hard on right now).  I'd love to hear about all the great local
labels that people know about on this list that don't get major distribution
(like Delsin for example; great label especially that last Lee Norken
release, can't say much for the Peel Seamus stuff though not my cup.)  The
last couple of Planet E's have really kicked it all up a notch (the new Ibex
and the Herbert rmx of Recloose).  I really hope to hear some great
responses here
Cheers
Classics of the future past for sure
but you can't go much wrong with the others either. If there's one criticism
you could have, is that most releases are variations on the same theme, but
when the theme is this good, who cares? And besides, such a criticism never
stopped people from drooling over Basic Channel records :)
That's because all basic channel records sound different
I would say the Advent's overt thematicism is more akin to the Migs/Naked
style.  Anyone know of any good new house that's coming out?  Something
other than Moodyman/Theo Parrish.  It's all starting to sound the same.
Re: [313] experimental hip hop?
2001-02-07 Thread Todd Smith
Check out anything on Mush or Big Dada.
Big Dada's last comp 'Black Whole Styles' is a great intro into the more
unusual hiphop.  Some of their other releases like Ty's latest album are
more straight chilled grooves with more blathering about ego's thrown
overtop (it's still a top piece in my mind considering every MC must get pay
dues to themselves).
While on Mush; Aesop Rock's last album 'Float' stole my mind as strangest
hiphop album of the year.  The other stuff on Mush ranges from straight
poetics to spoken word drama's, with all sorts of strange noises in midst.
As someone else already mentioned find anything by Saul Williams, he is the
man and will be for a long time coming.
I'm glad you've had fun.  I'm glad I have respect for those who show respect
I'm sorry you have to make sexual connotations about me and Alan.  Perhaps
this is to fulfil some lifelong fantasy you cannot share with others, due to
your closet nature.  I'm not sure, it's all speculative.
I do know however this list has turned to sh*t since Alan stopped posting
rather be up on someone's nuts in fervent RESPECT, than to be there simply
to ogle and act like I know what I'm talking about.
It's nice to see you've come out of the woodwork to share your words with
Umm, while you may very well deserve your opinion, sometimes it's best kept
to yourself.
Alan used to post on this list quite frequently, and I am personally sad
that he no longer does, since it was great to be able to talk to an original
313'er with tonnes of history behind him.  The man knows what he's talking
about and gives tonnes of respect where it is deserved.  Something some of
us lack a great deal of.
Have some respect and even if you have none then shut the f*ck up!
I believe the guy asked for an opinion not a freaking sale, this list isn't
your personal sounding board for your website so stick it somewhere else.
Re: [313] Gemini CDJ Package For Sale
2001-02-01 Thread Todd Smith
It is also very narrow minded to think that you should only play records
between +- 4% of what they were recorded at, besides no one said they were
playing at one tempo, they just said they wanted to play some things faster.
Even the best of classics have been reworked into something new and
different (ie. TP playing MJ's Billy Jean on 45 and juggling it).  Why the
hell do you think they made pitch control in the first place?  Lose yourself
in the experiment and stop trying to be so damn calculated.
2001-02-01 Thread Todd Smith
Alot of electro guys actually keep their techs pitched up to 16% so they can
get the really some really crazy electro beats happening.  Electro has a
pretty wide BPM range and IMHO being able to pitch techs up to 16% is great
for this purpose.
Gnutella eats mad resources from your computer, be careful especially if you
do any sort of graphics or audio work on your comp not to have Gnutella
running in the background.  I've lost a lot of work that way.
Re: [313] new monolake and [more stuff]
2001-01-25 Thread Todd Smith
I emailed Robert re: vinyl release, but have yet to hear back from him since
he's out on tour right now.  Doubtful that it will get released on vinyl
however since none of Monolake's other albums have, however there are
already singles for fragile/static and ice/stratoshpere out there on
imbalance.
I just picked up the album myself yesterday, and even though I have both the
singles, the other material is superb.
Hopefully I'll find Nightmare World pt. 2 sooner or later.
