Sweet! Yep, it is at the old Elysium, its now called the White House. Bruce Bailey has earned his title of King of Detroit House over the years. I've worn through most of the CDs he's given me! There's pre-sales still available online. http://www.wantickets.com/JodieJodieS I'll have hard tickets available for $20 starting Friday night if we manage to meet up somewhere during the weekend. Tickets at the door start at $25. The party runs from 8pm-8am on Sunday night. I'm so excited I can't wait till Sunday! Derrick, Stacey Hale, Bruce, plus Marissa Guzman, Oscar P, Todd Weston... every name on the bill has made me dance my booty off on many occasion. There already seems to be some confusion about this on here. You guys should find your facts from actual media outlets, not social facebook or whatevers... There's a good article about it on Crains. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20131120/NEWS/131129990/campus-martius-will-turn-into-global-dance-party-for-electronic# Real Detroit has another article with some great quotes too. $300 is for the conference element at Ford Field. The free fest will be surrounding Campus Martius Park with 5 stages. I've heard the hullaballoo about Carol for years, and then had the pleasure to work with her at Campus Martius for many years there after. She has her quirks, and I know a lot of people who've had troubles with her, I myself have had a few worrisome moments, but she's overall a solid person, and seeing that she's gonna do this, well, it makes me think there's some real force behind it. She's had to have put some serious time into the planning of this thing. We'll see how it pans out, but I think the interview she did with Real Detroit is pretty solid, and she's right... I know there's a lot of out of towners that will pick one versus the other... but truthfully, I know a helluva lot of folks that will appreciate the fact that they can put travel options into their calendar. Not everyone in the world is available Memorial Day Weekend... we'll get more people coming here if they have two different months to choose from. I'm just saying this is the feedback that I've gotten from friends of mine overseas. And as for where did all this money materialize from... you must have no idea what Carol does for a living, or what has been happening in the city in the past 6 months... and no, I'm not talking about the bankruptcy... check out what's occurred with the Detroit 300 Conservancy and their Event Calendar, look at all of the changes to downtown, the Chess Boards with life size chess pieces people are playing on the sidewalk, all of the recent stores that have popped up, there's some really crazy things happening here... and there's plenty of money available if you know the right people, have a good idea with good planning behind it, and most importantly, a well connected team to implement it. Detroit's changing... and I 100% believe there's room for 2 major Electronic Music Festivals of this size here in our city. I can't wait for the conference, and I will be paying the money, it sure is cheaper than me traveling to Miami's WMC, and considering its in Detroit, I can guarantee the conference / technology part itself is gonna be way sweeter than WMC... I take it personally cause I write about this stuff and it's so important to me. I try to not get so worked up, but geez, you guys. The talk of unity is an everyday theme around Detroit. Everyone wants it. Some make it happen. The best unity is the stuff that happens every day of the year in small ways. True support and camaraderie. It does happen. The tech part at Ford Field gets my nerdo vibes going, but no way I'm spending that kind of money for it. The thing that is worrisome is that Carol Marvin already damaged relationships with Derrick, Kevin, and Carl, and now she's dealing with Juan and Rik. It will be interesting to see what actually comes of it. I'm with Jwan, wait and see. If this thing really does happen, and Cybotron plays, you know I'll be there. Re: (313) Return to a free DEMF on July 4th?
Timing is everything, and a decade ago, things were a lot different... look, I've got a lot of people that I know that were not paid from working for her... but, I know that there's no way her event would be a success if it was the weekend following Movement... I also know Movement is not the only Electronic Music Festival happening in the city now, there's a total of 4 now, and Carol's will be 5, yes, the other festivals are smaller, but so what. A friend of mine in New Orleans just posted about how in New Orleans they have 10 jazz fests a year, and all of those fests help the economy... so umm... yeah... Carol's been the person managing all of the Sponsorships for the Detroit 300 Conservancy since 2007, and the whole mission of that place is to spur Detroit's Economy through events... I started working there in 2006, and I've literally seen downtown's Economy change through the Events I helped to Program Book... truth be told, my love of Techno made it sometimes difficult to work in the same office as her, but over the years I've come to realize she's quite the powerhouse, and she's earned my respect. So, yeah, her thought that having 10 festivals a year will help Detroit's economy, well, it makes sense to me, and I think the naysayers will continue to be so... myself, though, I support it... we need Movement here, but we also need the SCP Backpack House Festival, and once FEMT is up and running everyone's gonna say that we need it too. Every bone in my body tells me that this is a good thing for the city, and that we'll all benefit from it... my gut instinct. I honesty don't think that Detroit is not at the stage to support two large techno festivals, especially since they are not together. I hope it can, but I don't see it. If this new festival would have been scheduled, say the following weekend after Movement, I could see some of the unity and community the article alludes to. After parties and day raves could have been the glue and the two fests the book ends. And no, I have no idea what Carol does for a living. What I do remember is that a lot of people weren't paid when she was last at the helm and next thing I heard she moved on and started ravestivals in other cities. Kudos to her. If she's been sleeping on a bed made of money this whole time, why did it take a decade for DEMF to come back? Just curious. More than 120 tons of food were grown, and Greening is anticipating a 20% increase in both participation and output this year. Re: (313) Festival Debriefing?
My biggest complaint last year was the lack of diversity in the audience. My shouting complaint was that there's got to be something wrong when the Country Hoedown Festival has more people of color than the Techno Festival. This year I was pleasnatly surprised to see this change. There was a lot more diversity. And my other major complaint about the terrible Video Screens last year was also greatly improved upon this year. For next year, I hope to God they improve upon the disgusting state of the bathrooms. I paid for the VIP wristband, mainly because all of my friends from Chicago had them, but also because I was looking forward to being able to use clean bathrooms. I run a warehouse venue that looks rough, but bathroom attendants are mandatory in my mind, as with 1,000s of people, they get messy quick, and its not a nice thing to deal with when your drunk or on other additives. For $165 wristband, I expected to at least have toilet paper at 8:00pm on the first day of the festival. Unfortunately, there was not, and the facilities were disgusting. Hopefully next year they will improve upon this oversight. Even in the public outhouses, they really need to have someone overseeing this area. To be honest, trying to type about how disgusting this area was is making me sick. For those that were there, you know what I'm talking about. Overall, though, the music was great. Francois, Carl Cox, Kate Simko, Eric Johnson, Norm Talley, DJ Seoul... AMAZING! Looking forward to next year, and very happy that each year Paxahau is listening to people's complaints and making improvements. I don't know if I can just smell better because I quit smoking or if there really was more marijuana being smoked this year, but any time I was in a crowd at the festival I felt like I was inside a bong. And when I was walking out after Derrick's set I was right behind two underage kid gabbling about their friend with a 'mason jar of pills.' Now I try not to judge, and lord knows I did my bit for Kentucky's finer distillers this weekend. But the vibe is always better when the focus is on the music, not the intoxicants. I have to write a proper article on it for the free paper for which I'm AE editor, so I'm going to save my more penetrating observations for that. Fwd: (313) Carl Craig named creative director of Movement 2010
AMAZING I was just in a heated discussion yesterday about how Paxahau hasn't been doing enough to connect with the Black House Crowd in the Detroit region, but with Carl on board for next year, thats a great step in the right direction. Thats a sigh of relief for me, as I honestly think they do a great job with the technical production of the festival, it just broke my heart to see how racially divided it had become last year. My hope is that Carl can bridge the divide and bring it back around to being a racially diverse audience. Re: (313) Seiji? The hell?
I'm curious if this is the same Seiji I went to Uni with in Liverpool. He was from Japan, and he was a very talented and diverse creative mind. I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to blend various genres of music and make it seamless. In all aspects of the work I saw him do, he had this talent..., from producing events, to creating video, to composing music, to operating interactive midi systems, to web design. I remember one day he asked me to teach him web design, and two days later he took the 1 hour tutorial I had given him and taught himself how to make a website. Pure genius. Does anyone know if this is the same Seiji? hmmm... taking the bait here Tristan you think Seth Troxler is the best out of Detroit...? I'd never heard of him so I asked around and just heard some interesting comments about him... and besides the comments about him starting out as a trance DJ... from what I hear of his recent local influence... he threw a party the same night DJ Seoul from Detroit Techno Militia had his birthday party, and from what I hear no one showed to Troxler's event, but over 300 people were at Seoul's... so, I'm surprised you think S.T.'s the best music being produced in the city, there's a whole world of music being produced here thats amazing. You should do a bit more research about whats being produced here... ~JoD On Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 4:34 PM, Tristan Watkins phonop...@googlemail.com wrote: On 23/04/2009 20:53, kent williams wrote: NPR's Morning Edition asks Why Can't Detroit Cash In On It's Music Scene. Yeah, it would be a great design if the family tree was made more accurate. But I guess with all of the incestuous crossing paths and confusions about who came first, it's a difficult undertaking to create a proper tree. Wow, Kooky... I know Tom was guilty on the first account, as I remember when that threat happened, but on the other 3 guilty verdicts... where did you base your supporting evidence and where was the jury to define guilt or innocence? I know here in America democracy is almost dead, but I thought we still had a process where a guilty verdict is found through providing evidence and having a group discussion determine guilt or innocence. Forgive me for bringing up the Hitler name again, but I think in this situation, it smells a lot like the Death of a Democracy. Kook, I know you've got long-standing beef with Tom, but try to at least put some sort of evidence like you did in the first guilty verdict. Re: (313) Mixworks Presents... Underground Resistance
Yeah, Alvin's recently reopened after being shut down for years. It was ultra famous for being THE spot for hip-hop, with Proof and the like always being there. They reopened about 8 months ago. I went to a party there the first week of January for Andre of Mahogani's birthday. I've got a rather funny story from that weekend. I had a DJ in town from the UK, and we went for Andre's birthday and had a really good time, Slum Village was playing and they did a total jam session. I got Alvin's to offer the UK DJ a slot the following day doing a UK hip-hop/jazzy set, as he plays similar music to what was being played on the Mahogani/Slum Village gig. I didn't know this, but Sunday's are usually open-mic night, and it tends to draw a very different type of crowd than the night before. Hip-Hop Open-mics tend to get a bit rough in some spots. Actually, rough is a mild way to phrase it. When we walked in, I was a bit in shock, because it was totally not what we expected. Completely different energy than the night before. This poor guy from the UK was scared to death going up on the decks in front of one of the roughest crowds I'd seen in Detroit in awhile. People were glaring and actually growling at him. He smoked all of his cigarettes before even going on,so he asked me to run to the store while he was DJing. I told him I couldn't leave him cos they might rush the stage if they didn't like his set. The look on his face was classic, but I was just being realistic. It is Detroit after all, and even though people are normally very friendly, sometimes you walk into a room with intense energy. He played a wicked set though, and the crowd was actually really feeling it. It was an interesting experience for the both of us. I was actually happy he got to experience what its like to play in a truly Urban Detroit venue with a very rough urban crowd. Anyhow, basis of my story is that Alvin's is a historic spot. If you can manage to make it to the backstage area, check out all of the writing on the walls. I've also got some pics of Alvin's on my facebook. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=83910id=841750482 The first few in the series are of the back room, we're there talking with Malik Alston and a hip-hop guy who told us a story of how he's had more friends die from shoot-outs than he's got alive right now. Ice on the experience for the guy from the UK. Very Detroit spot. Very historic. Def recommended, especially for UR. Not sure how the normal Sunday crowd is going to handle the change up though, but actually it might be a really good thing, you might get to see some of the true street dancers show up to this event. Hey Robin, I'd have to disagree with you on that. I spent 3 years in Liverpool, just moving back to Detroit 9 months ago, and the two cities have a lot of similarities even today, actually, especially today. The growth occurring in Detroit is symbolically similar to the growth occurring in Liverpool. Growth being stimulated by funding of the arts and social programs. Hundreds of millions of dollars being invested into Detroit through the Skillman foundation and the Bank of America. Hundreds of millions of pounds being invested by the EU Capital of Culture. I think mid 80s Liverpool/Manchester/Sheffield share a lot in common with present day Detroit in terms of the dereliction of ex-industrial areas, abandonment of buildings and maybe even in the feeling of despair. Things have changed in the UK now though so the comparison is less valid these days. btw. to keep this on topic: One of the reasons Detroit music has been popular in the above northern UK cities (even going back to northern soul days) is because of the fact that they have industrial pasts. There's also massive differences too so I'm not saying the comparison really holds. robin...

I mean, if he really cared about the city, then he wouldn't have forced the city to pay $8mil+ for something that he was knowingly committing perjury for. Whatever the case, NPR and a number of other media stations are utilizing this Detroit political fight as a reference to the national US political mess we are experiencing in the presidential office. If you listened to NPR the day the Detroit news was announced, they spent the morning talking about Kwame, and they spent the afternoon taking callers who wanted to remember their loved ones who died in the Iraq war. People were making comments about how after Suddham was hanged, it should have been Bush and Chaney in the electric chair for the wrongdoings they've done. This went on for a few hours, with people talking about how the President and VP need to be impeached and tried for their war crimes. Symbolic. Detroit has a powerful effect on the globe. This trial with Kwame just may lead into the trial of the nations biggest criminals, Bush and Chaney. I think the world will be watching closely on this one. I hope this Detroit mess fuels the nations ability to get a trial together against Bush and Chaney, who have cost the nation billions in a war that was started from their lies. My 2 cents... I can't say I've ever heard Benny Benassi play... but what I do remember is seeing the massive line outside of Bleu here in Detroit the night that he was booked. There was easily 400 people standing outside waiting to get in. That's very untypical of Detroit events. I mean, those numbers do happen, my event Dec 30th had over 450 people through the door, but I also had 3 rooms with 10 artists on the bill. More than 400 people for one Electronic Music Artist... thats really rare in this city... so as much as I cringed when I saw his name on the bill, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to put him on, cos he will draw a large crowd of Detroit (most likely) suburbanites. Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
I had just been asking someone who works with them the same question the other day. We were at a bar, so forgive my hazy memory for specific details They've been formed officially as Paxahau for more than 11 years. Hoovar has had an influence in party promotions in Detroit since the early-mid 90s. Mid 90s is when the suburbanites started heading to Detroit in the 1,000's every weekend in order to party at the Raves. (The raves and those years are a part of Detroit history thats not often talked about on this 313 site or any of the overseas Detroit enthusiasts. The raves did have a massive influence on Detroit though, as literally 1,000s of people came to the city every weekend and raves were held in buildings that were otherwise unused, actually helping the building owners to make some income where there was none.) So, yeah, in business since the 97 or before, Hoovar worked with the Detroit party scene for 4+ years before that. I don't know anything about which parties he worked with or who or where. As I said, details are hazy, but I did get the understanding during the conversation that Hoovar has been involved with the city for longer than people have given him credit for previously. Suburbanites, although I don't get how people can live in the burbs, I do understand that when I lived in the burbs 10+ years ago, I still came to Detroit to spend my money, and many people in Detroit completely appreciates those suburbanites coming here to spend theirs now. I can't help but compare this thread to discussions I've heard about the evolution of the Winter Music Conference.. over the years the conference has evolved completely into a festival of mass proportions. Or even comparing it to the debate I used to hear over and over again about Vinyl vs CD, turntables vs Laptop. Evolution is part of life. It sometimes doesn't matter how much better you think it used to be. And to be fair... was it really that good at the beginning? I mean... yeah, the music line-ups were amazing... but were the bills to the production staff paid...? No... causing a lot of people in this city to struggle in one capacity or another... I know one person who was owed $9,000 after a fest w/ Carol... that was only one person out of the many people that filed lawsuits trying to get their money, but no luck... and this was during the years that the city invested an est. $300,000 a year in DEMF. So... DEMF has changed... the city no longer invests like that... they have to fund it all themselves... the music line-ups have changed... and people are actually getting paid what they were promised... some things are for the better... don't get me wrong, I can come up with 50 things they should do that could make it better and another 20 things I'm angry that they changed, but I recognize that it's a bit foolish to try to stop change, and even more foolish to think DEMF the first 3 years were the perfect symbol for what DEMF should be On Wed, Mar 26, 2008 at 3:03 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Actually, and technically, I don't think it is DEMF afaik Carol Marvin owns DEMF what Paxahau is doing is Movement I've come to the conclusion that, although they both have taken place in the same place and the same annual dates, the festivals are two different things with two almost entirely different spirits Paxahau's Movement festival isn't DEMF, although it does use the tag line - Detroit's Electronic Music Festival It's not THE Detroit Electronic Music Festival The Detroit Electronic Music Festival doesn't exist anymore and more than likely will never again I'm glad I got to experience it - it was during a time when they could get away with bringing in THAT much talent, legendary artists that I REALLY respect without asking for any money from any of the fans Celebrating Detroit, Detroit music, Detroit electronic music, and 1st through 3rd (and 4th) waves of Detroit influence splitting hairs maybe but I've pretty much come to realize that Paxahau probably don't feel any obligation or need to keep the festival in line with the original spirit of the original DEMF Therefore, Paxahau isn't soiling the legacy of the DEMF because they aren't doing THE Detroit Electronic Music Festival I'm happy that I can say I was there when... That Record Store you were looking for in Hamtramck is called Detroit Threads, not Record Time. It's definitely still there, he's got an amazing collection, very diverse, and definitely worth a stop-off. Also, don't forget Vibes, on 8-mile, its Rick Wilhites store, although you'll probably need a guide to get there, as its hard to find, and you have to be buzzed in, worth it though, as its one of the best house music stores in the country and def THE best Detroit House music store anywhere in the world. Sushi at Oslo's is a good recommendation. And don't forget to get your coffee, muffins and red bull at the Urban Bean Co. This place was Blake Baxters old record store, and this place will be open 24-7 during the fest. They have turntables and programmed and open table times where people from out of town can hop on. The owner of this coffee shop, Josh Greenwood, is infamous in the city for his influence, through Push, Motormouth magazine, Dalley in the Alley and a few more. Def worth a stop-through. Corner of Grand River and Griswold, prob a 7 minute bike ride, and 15-20 minute walk from Hart Plaza, straight up Woodward to Grand River, go one block to Griswold. Re: (313) lineups? Re: (313) demf 2008
I am a white girl who rides my bike every day during the summer, to work, to the store, even to the bars and clubs. I've never had a problem, other than the ongoing hellos from people as I pass by, that kind of freaked me out a bit at first because living in the UK, especially in Liverpool, people don't tend to say hello to people they don't know, but in Detroit, there is a strong sense of southern hospitality, people say hello to one another as they pass by, in elevators, on the streets, everywhere you go. Just as in every other city, there are places you wouldn't want to ride your bike, as it gets a bit dangerous, but during the daytime, I tend to not worry where I ride, just after dark I try to be cautious. People here do tend to bring there bikes into their apartments, so I'd suggest speaking to your hotel to see if they have an inside storage space for bikes. Bike riding in Detroit has become more and more popular, as the gas prices are very high. I tend to see 4-10 bike riders a day at the minimum in the summer and I work a 11-5, so I'm sure I miss the majority of good biking hours. It's a major city, so yes, you will be riding amongst a lot of highrises and parking lots, but theres also parks, the river walk, the graffitti mile (which will hopefully be renovated enough by DEMF you can ride from the lake front to Eastern Market). Detroit's very spread out, so you shouldn't expect to ride from downtown to Record Time Roseville for an outing, that would end up being a 20+ mile journey roundtrip. There are very cute neighborhoods that are a good ride-through, such as Woodbridge, which is about a 10 minute ride from Hart Plaza. I'd suggest a guide, though, for anything your doing in the city, especially if you've never been here before. If your interested in a bike tour around the city, I'd be willing to do a tour on the Saturday from noon till 2. Let me know. It's much preferred to driving. On 3/16/08, M Ng [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was hoping to cycle around DEMF last year, there aren't many cars - found most of the time there weren't many cars. OK... I'm sorry, but I practically choked on my morning coffee when I read this... Frank, I had such higher opinions of you than this!! You think the overall number of performers increased? They've consistently had 4 stages sometimes 5 throughout the years, same hours too.. simple math would tell you thats not humanly possible... that's Ok that you might've miscalculated that, forgivable... but here's where I choked on my coffee... you think there's a finite number of DJs and producers in Detroit?!! WHAT??!! Do some research, go back to school, learn about not just the history of where it began, but also where it has evolved to, because your comment is dead wrong. This city has more amazing DJs, Producers, and live musicians laying beats on techno tracks than I could ever book if I was producing a 5 day festival with 4 stages, making every stage Detroit only. Kevin Saunderson has played five times, and Mike Grant and Mike Huckaby have each played four times. WTF on saunderson 5 times, grant and huck deserve to play every year! tom -- peace, frank dj mix archive: http://www.deejaycountzero.com

Dan... thanks for the input... since you won't be arriving until the Saturday, does that mean you'll be staying for a few days after the festival finishes? You doing any interviews while your here? Tom... I'll keep you posted, as soon as I know confirmation of the groups, I'll let you know. You know, I can't help but feel a bit of a happyness hearing you say no matter what I have on it sounds interesting... I know how picky (and knowledgeable) you are with your music, and if you think it sounds interesting without even hearing who's playing... well, anyways, it just makes me feel happy for now... I have a press date of April 25th. so I'll let you know by then whats going to be booked. Let me know when you'll be in Detroit and what you've got planned already.I know I personally really want to hit up the Soul Skate this year. Don't really want it too hard, pref a mixture of stuff. The RA podcasts are always good, but i'm not really looking for mixes (unless there are any more andy stott sounding mixes out there!) Current fav is the riotcontrol podcast. Dam fine. Another i have heard is the bodytonic (the spirit catcher one has some nice stuff on it) For English humour i enjoy the adam and joe podcast which is on bbc6. Re: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF?
How would getting the shirts done in the UK make it cheaper? There are a lot of screen printing houses here in Detroit that are really good. With the exchange rate, its cheaper to get them done here in Detroit. And for Kent (apologies for sending that last one through with rich text, I know most the list didn't see the above), I understand that your thinking of those in Europe, I am too. A month ago, I had a clothing company from the UK contact me about outsourcing their screen printing to a company here in Detroit because of the cost difference. They will save more than 3/4 of the printing price and they get to help the Detroit economy by printing them at a Detroit Artist Community Center. They're speaking to the trade association about tariffs, and it still looks like they'll save at last 1/2. This list is about the 313 influence. I vote we do them in Detroit and in turn help benefit Detroit Artists in a Detroit Community Center. Jodie On Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 2:14 PM, Thomas D. (313) back in the 313
After moving from Liverpool to Detroit in June, I lost my email address that was signed up to the hyperreal account. Finally had the time to sign up to hyperreal again, and I'm very happy to be back. Missed the ongoing discussions about the global views and opinions of Detroit. Thanks again to those who aided in my University dissertation about Detroit's international social networks. I received the highest UK standard of a 1st mark. All of your input really helped a lot. All the best, Jodie
