2001-10-24 Thread Wv909
Yikes!!! Less skill than pop huh? (or opera ) ...
..
In other words, good thing about electronic music is that it comes from your
heart and your mind right to the computer, with much less skill involved
than, let's say, opera or pop.

so. To perform live I have to put everything in the computer (I'm not moving
my whole studio) and the result is much worse than the original.
WHY DO IT THEN ?

What I've done sometimes is to record a live set at the studio and just
play it, and I don't think it's cheating.

YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DOES THIS , SOME PEOPLE MARKET 'RECORDED LIVE '
SETS THIS WAY ..HEY THEY WHERE BREATHING AT THE TIME RIGHT?

Let's forget about the pop/rock stereotype, electronic music is different

[313] Objective, destructive,positive(O.T.)

2001-08-08 Thread Wv909
The underlying truth here is that we all
need to see these things objectively , for it is the reader
that attaches the negitivity (in most cases) to statements.
Here on the list the common practice seems to be , attach negitivity
to anothers statements if we dis-agree with them ( or maybe if they hit home ,
in someway).
Everyones voice is truly as VALID as the next, and a few here have been trying
to point this out. If you like what they are saying or not, thats on you..but
instead of attaching all this DRAMA to sh*t why not
use this forum for whats it for ; try chating with those persons
and find out why they feel the way they do..
Everyone would synergistically benefit from being a whole lot more
Objective on the list and be willing to enter into a civil disscussion
with an opposing view point to your own

Yes, it's on a sampler ep which also has the Air Liquide, Westbam, and Brian

Air Liquide. Can't remember the label though.

Funny , how this seems to be the center of attention now
that it's 'cleaned' up and fashionable , not to mention now

Funny also how all those 'ralling' behind it , didnt mention going
to the events that went down when Submerge/UR where still there.
Funny how the truly artistic and visionary people take whats undesirable
and set aside , add their creative energy ; make it a focal point, an
Axis for a community , if you will ,then the 'trendy ' types come in and
make it fashionable and 'in' and now somehow more acceptable inspiring
Funny how anyone who offers up anything different than the status quo
on this here list gets bashed and is told to apologize

K got your message times 3..
Yeah like whats important in regards to artistic sh*t is that you
put something of yourself in there ; as stated knowing all your records,
or changing things up ..but you still have something, what ever it is thats
coming from you and not a reflection of everything else...
funny when people post sh*t like what U did someone always comes with
the reply below ..' oh thats negitive' ..blah blah etc etc...
then at the bottom they have a UR qoute, to me whats F'ing negitive is
not question sh*t , to accept everything broadcasted at you or to not
say something totally opposite , even for discussions sake to stir up
reactions and cause everyone to think about why they believe what they
do...this is the essence of not letting yourself be controled!!!
cheers!

2001-07-19 Thread Wv909
There are no limitations thats only YOUR perspective!

the essence of not being controlled is to recognize the limitations of this
world.. those of man, and those of nature, and moving freely within them..
it has nothing to do with a discussion about worshipping rich hawtin or a
vocoded voice from UR.

worship no man. respect all. you definitely owe kyle dupuy an apology. we
all benefit from discourse, but not senseless insults. it amazes me what
people will say to others on-line or behind their backs when they aren't
looking in your eyes.. techno is about communication... and most of detroit
is a back-stabbing double talking smoke screen, the furthest thing from an
evolved sub-culture.
I definately do not owe anyone anything so get through to your grey matter..
Your though process in regards to this is an amazement..and humourous
Definately though if he wanted to reply to my face I could be in A2 in 30
minutes ..but instead he chose to 'cast senseless insults'
in return , as you put it.(Is he justified, but I'm not?)
And maybe you just hit on my very indirect point of worshiping a human...
In regards to your 'P.S. whos we? you and him?
I sugesst you check out HYPEREAL.com most directly the story of how
the +8 people denied entry to DREXICYA and SUBMERGE crew at one of these
little forays into 'breaking laws' at a RAVE in an abandonded building,in
Detroit...This really shows the true aspect of open creativity and looking
ahead huh?

p.s. we like +8 and Hawtin because they are always looking ahead, always
open creatively, and we have a long history together of breaking laws and
dancing in abandoned buildings.

Is it interesting though , this is a european car in design ,function
and powertrainThe Focus was on the marketplace throughout europe ;long
before it crossed the big lake to our shores.
There really isnt any 'Detroit' technology within this automobile.
ummm would it be safe to say that an american design, created in
Detroit with typical american/Detroit values would be a more acceptable
canidate?
Besides these symantics; how does a car , in any way focus on
Detroit techno?

Actually , I do recall reading in the News that Derrick May
'scored' sound track stuff for the Ford website and they
actually have a bio as well.
Would this be related to Genral Motors booking Dj Bone to
'dj' their Detroit auto show 2000 In which the new Hummer
concept was brought out while Jaugar was playing.
Much to the enjoyment of the UK/Euro press and leaving the
locals not knowing whats going on

Same old, same old. It took Moby licensing all the tracks on Play for
advertisers like Ford to decide there might be something behind this
instrumental. technical, music... .

Then the gates were open for jwt's hipster writers and AD's to propose some
old school. Good for them. Too bad it took over 10 years.

Re: [Re: [313] Can Promoters DJs resolve their differences?]

2000-11-06 Thread Wv909
Further more it should be said that the Artist/performers should receive
compensation when there name/image etc are used on a flyer to draw $$/numbers
to an 'event'..
The tatics reinforce the ideal; When you go out ,support those who are truely
supporting , in a real and true sense.
If this seems questionable; consider the alernitive: we'll just have
every event say that just about everyone is an Invited guest
and if no shows , no harm no foul.right?

Peace, Love, Unity, RESPECT!!! The tactic used by these promoters is the
oldest trick in the book, moreover the fact that this happened with a
promoter from your own town makes that move a bit cheeky.

No one's grimming anyone over trying to throw a party or make some money,
but if you're going to be in this business then respect the etiquette and
ethics which are well known to all music 'industry' professionals because no
one will feel offended or exploited.

Subject: [313] Can Promoters DJs resolve their differences?
Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 20:04:34 EST

Greetings From TP!

I am sharing the following information with this list in hopes that it will
create a basis for positive dialog / discussion of how we as DJs
Promoters
work with each other to achieve the common goal of a banging party with a
REAL RIGHT vibe!
I especially hope that any aspiring / up-and-coming DJs and/or Promoters on
this list will take away something valuable which they can use.

Today Carl (the promoter behind the HOUSE EXPLOSION event) and I spoke
regarding the controversy centered on the flyer for the HOUSE EXPLOSION
2000
event. This morning I sent an e-mail to which he responded by phone and
agreed to ALL of my demands to resolve this issue of the improper use of my
name.

Today I received 11 e-mail letters from cats who see nothing wrong with a
person's name being listed on a flyer as a SPECIAL INVITED GUEST.
Furthermore, they asked why I was making such a big deal about it, and
thought I should be honored by the invitation. Well, I was honored! But how
fine is the honor if it is bitter sweet?
I understand that many of us on this list are in various countries
throughout
the world where the laws governing such matters are different. However,
being
here in the USA, let me try to make my point by using an example . . . . .

  . . . . LET'S SAY I DECIDED TO THROW A PARTY AT THE STATE THEATER IN
DETROIT
ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT. I THEN DRAFT A LETTER OF INVITATION TO MICHAEL JACKSON.
I
THEN FAX THE LETTER TO MICHAEL JACKSON'S MANAGEMENT COMPANY. I NEVER GET A
RESPONSE FROM MICHAEL JACKSON, OR ANY OF HIS REPRESENTATIVES. HOWEVER, I
TAKE
IT UPON MYSELF TO MAKE FLYERS ADVERTISING MY CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE STATE
THEATER WITH SPECIAL INVITED GUEST - MICHAEL JACKSON!

I ASK YOU, MY FRIENDS, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE BEFORE MICHAEL'S
LEGAL TEAM WOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST ME? WOULD I BE WRONG TO ADVERTISE
MICHAEL'S NAME AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST? AFTER ALL, I DIDN'T SAY THAT HE
WAS GOING TO PERFORM RIGHT? I DIDN'T EVEN SAY THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE
THERE.
ALL I SAID WAS THAT HE WAS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST. IN FACT, I COULD PROVE
THAT I DID INDEED INVITE MR. JACKSON BY PRESENTING THE LETTER ALONG WITH A
COPY OF THE VERIFIED FAX TRANSMISSION TO MICHAEL'S MANAGEMENT WHICH STATES
THAT I AM INVITING HIM TO ATTEND MY EVENT. SO I ASK YOU GOOD PEOPLE, IF
MIKE,
NOR HIS PEOPLE RESPOND TO MY INVITATION, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE HIS
NAME
IN ANY MANNER (EVEN AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST) IN PROMOTION OF MY
EVENT?

WHY DID I MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS? BECAUSE I HAVE TO TAKE A STAND
ON
WHAT I BELIEVE IS RIGHT, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT AFFECTS ME, BUT BECAUSE
SOMEDAY
(IF NOT TODAY) IT COULD AFFECT YOU!
MY POSITION WAS BASED UPON A PRINCIPLE WHICH IS PERSONAL TO ME, BUT COMMON
TO
ALL OF US.

FOR THE RECORD DELANO SMITH FELT AS I DID, AND ALSO EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN
OVER BEING LISTED ON THE FLYER. AS I UNDERSTAND IT,
HE TOO HAS RESOLVED HIS ISSUE WITH THE PROMOTER.

Peace Respect,

TP

Re: [[313] Planet Mu night]

2000-10-23 Thread Wv909
What does any of this have to do with 313??

David Hampson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Just a few words about this night - I wrote more last night but I got hit by
a virus and lost everything I was working on last night! If anyone has
e-mailed me in the last 24 hours can you re-send!

Anyhow, if anyone was expecting anything as big as Warp's do they would have
been disappointed - the venue - up a rather scummy back street in East
London - would be lucky to get 200 people in, though they had borrowed the
same school disco lights as Warp did, and not splitting them between two
rooms was reasonably impressive...

First thing that happened when I got there was I got my money back! Having
came a fair distance to the gig was a little annoying until the guy on the
door told me there was no changes to the bill or anything, just that we were
being given our money back (in exchange for e-mail addresses). So all of
you who bitched about £8 for some crappy acts no one else has heard of lost
out!

Inside: school disco lights, no visuals. At the front Mike Paradinas and
the guy that plays roadies in every movie ever with roadies - at least it
looked like him - were peddling records from behind the turntables whilst on
stage some long-haired hippy guy was playing guitar hunched over a console,
though how he could see anything through that long hippy hair is anyone's
guess. Anyhow, Mr Capitol K kind of seemed like he was hiding behind
everything, hair included, and I guess it goes back to the Warp night and
the need for some visuals since watching some guy hiding behind computers is
not visually stimulating. At one point K slipped into straight indie rock
which seemed kind of weird for the night but I guess as a hippy he has to do
his own thang (or is it thing...).

Straight up next was an unshaven guy who hid behind a laptop and played some
nice tunes - at least I think he played some nice tunes - he could well have
been typing up the Planet Mu tour accounts, which will probably explain why
4 tunes in Jega stood up, walked out the backdoor and never returned -
obviously realising he was not going to get paid!

Next up on the decks Mike Paradinas who seemed rather uncomfortable in the
spotlight. He opened with a rather mad banging techno style tune on a white
label album with Caustic Window Remix LP written on it - anyone heard
anything about this yet!!?!! A lot of what he was playing was on his DAT
player and it was the same style of drum and bass meets gabba that Aphex and
Chris Cunningham played, but this time instead of A-Ha it was MC Hammer
being mashed up with a track based around Don't Touch This! - I was once
asked by a gullible friend if I wanted to see MC Hammer live to which I
replied I'd prefer to see him dead.

After a while his discomfort got to him and he begged a pair of eager young
scamps to take over - Hellfish and Producer who look like a white Maseo and
Keith from the Prodigy without all that camp punk rock make up. These guys
certainly won't be caught masturbating the tonearm - the menu is dock-off
beats and plenty of 'em! Their style somehow manages to transcend banging
techno but with more beats, hip hop with a lot more beats and drum and bass
without the beats taken out, and what they lack in subtlety that more than
make up for in intensity. What set them apart from the others was that they
obviously were into the music and revelled in it, unlike Capitol K hiding
behind his hippy hair, Jega behind his accounts and Mike P wishing he had
something to hide behind!

Once again it was disappointing how many people had came to front - only
half a dozen people were dancing, though it may be that they were
intimidated by some punk rock dude who looked like his butt plug had
overheated but maybe he was just enjoying the music! It was a nice small
midweek night out, and its hard to feel short-changed by a free gig! I
almost wish I brought my MD along!

Umm ok .. It seemed fairly clear to , quote his comment followed by
a question...This didn't seem 'cryptic'
In regards to posting private emails ..please explain this as
I'm unaware of an err on my part, that would reveal some 'private ' info
or to say thats not my intention, so if you could explain..hopefully
not too crypticly :)

good afternoon,

i think the problem Jared had was that your initial responses to his posts
were rather cryptic - cryptic to the point that i imagine no-one except
yourself really understood.

fair enough, he shouldn't be posting to the list that you're full of b.s.,
but at the same time he had already asked you to explain what you meant, and
all you did was reply with another cryptic one-liner. i think his
frustration got the better of him.

however, the main reason i've emailed you is to remind you that posting
private off-list emails to the list is v.poor netiquette and repeated
posting of private emails may result in your email address being barred from
the list by the list owner. this is clearly laid out in the rules and
regulations of the 313 list. i haven't a clue if you were previously aware
of this or not, so you certainly have the benefit of the doubt so far as i'm
concerned.

some of your posts make it clear you have an opinion on the music, so i hope
you'll be contributing positively to the list for some time to come.

2000-09-28 Thread Wv909
Pardon me if this string forces my hand , as it where...
firstly is it known that genralizations are genrally non-functional
they exsist only in a non-reality,reality , to fullfill the need to
fit everything into a catagory .Second the comment re: lady Di's
need to have genrally more sensory input to acheive satisfaction
Are we really gonna quantify music into some sort of science
experiment ? Why do some like classical and other country ... and good
lord whatdo we do about those who prefer classical renditions of country
tunes? Why does one individual like a particular painting and the next not?
can we quantify the color ratio? or maybe it's a post mod vs.
modern varible we can fit into the equationNext is the 13:30pm
note re: wrench in your gears ..ALOT of people like music for
many different reasons.? h I would dare to say that
EVERYONE likes what they like for many, many different reasons.
Also , I feel like I'm walking the frail edge here; to say even
worse, simply because it's cutting edge??This seems incredible
if , for some of those out 'there' , that could be no better reason to check
out something new :Because it's new and fresh thusly cutting edge
Finally this just makes me smile; after saying being genral is a
handicap for sure you come back with ..I am simply trying to
figure out a GENRAL pattern or typing , with room for all 'midddle of the road
types'O.K MR Spock ..just kiddin'... But I must say
you follow with I hate to think we like what we like 'just because'
I am after a clearer vision why I would say look within , why do
you like what you like (I hope it's more than just because)This applies
to many things if the music thing is messin you up..
I would say re: this whole swedish techno thing , what comes from
over there is reactionary at best and therefore, lacking in insperation
and extremely repetive I dont know bout tone shifts and all that
but someone posted this when your being boring the mind wanders
You are on this planet to create ..not compete or compare

Well, as I was just telling someone, I have a tendency to be very general
and vastly broad and absolute, a handicap fo sure...

Anyways, there is a wrench in my gears in that ALOT of people like music for
many different reasons, and they are often not truthful about it. One of my
huge stumbling blocks in my research is this need to like something simply
because its proper or because it was created by someone historical, or even
worse, simply because it is cutting edge. This makes my work very difficult
for it illiminates any possibilty of knowing what they _really_ like to
hear...

The other thing is that I am not attempting to create a MMTI type test, in
which you answer 25 vquestion, and wham, I can tell you if you'll like Paper
Records or Code Red, no. I am simply trying to figure out a general pattern
of typing, with room for all the middle of the road types.

I hate to think that we like what we like just because, I am after a
clearer vision of why...

Perhaps Beyer is a good example of my theories though in that he is very
introverted, and his music is _very_ repetitive, and _very_ suceptible to
toneshifts...

2000-08-09 Thread Wv909
For the record :
the original email was in no way ment to incite racisim or from a
racist standpoint
But also for the record :
The orig. thread re: avant guarde techno...all of the artists mentioned as
being avant are white!...and to say that Detroit is in a slump or
letting people down etc...etc.. is not only an insult to those
African/American artists whose music changed the world, but also slaps them in
the face by now saying the white artist from overseas are now better!
Attention: Kraftwerk are amazing artists and have a style solely their own
(my point here...)..{oh yeah what would you call expo 2000...)
but Detroits techno influences albeit with a dab of Kraftwerk are mostly
other Black musicains/artistscan we say Pfunk or George Clinton?
Take for instantance ..Jimmy Hendrix, for those who appericate/understand
what he did, realize : though he had many influences ..his own music was
solely his own ..no one played ,produced , or had his style ..his music was
not a copy of his influences...thats what made him Hendrix
The truth convicts those who aren't within it..techno is not just a form of
music but an ideal ! Take all your lekabush's ,corolla's and even Cox's
and compare them to the innovaters ..the regular guys from Detroit who did it
from their basements in mostly Ghetto(an overused and misunderstood word)
areas with limited resorces and most importantly they did it without selling
their soul to an record label/company .

[313]Detroit bread butter (Ax-20)

2000-08-08 Thread Wv909
I find myself wondering where you guys are coming from...
It seems your opinions regarding the state of music from Detroit is
superficial at best...Where would your avant-guarde dj's be without someone
to proceed them..to give them something to copy?Everyone has influeneces ..but
in regards to techno those from other than the Detroit area are doing
exactly what the Beatles did with rock-and-roll ..copying
a black mans soul and claiming as their own and the uneducated pop music fans
just consuming whatever's directed at them. All of the e_notes regarding this
topic show an extreme lack of knowlegde regarding music from Detroit and it's
quality and to prove this I need only say one name
Kenny Dixon jrever heard of him?
