Just to show being sad enough to hang to e-mails from 3 years ago about
travelling places (in the hope you might get there some day
and the info will be useful) does occasionally pay off I'm starting a thread
off with a reply to the one below.

So...if you haven't guessed by now I'm in Rome Saturday 28th June to Tuesday
1st July. Anyone know what's on (313 or other good

things) - particularly the Saturday and Sunday nights?

Any list members want to say hello?

(accommodation is already sorted and I'm probably not bothered about record
shop tips - I'm on holiday from that too!)

Francis

P.S. Will be in Dubrovnik in Croatia on the night of Tuesday 8th of July too
so again if there are any hook-ups or parties to be had

let me know.

(313) Moodymann - the OC (was: venting)

2008-03-28 Thread fab.

ok my turn

heard the very short clips over at Sounds of the Universe
(http://www.soundsoftheuniverse.com/releases/?id=11456) and i very much like
what i heard.
Forgive me as i haven't been following Moodymann lately, I thought he was
either getting to housey or formulaic for my tastes, but has he been on some
sort of new tip? or is the clip too short and the tracks develop
differently?
Here the blurb says Kenny Dixon Jr keeps on developing his signature sound
in unexpected new directions and this single represents another exciting
step forward! From what i hear it seems he has been making stripped down
dirty techno (God forbid i say the word minimal) and the last track sounds
almost krunk.

are there any other recent releases in the same vein i should be aware
about?

sounds very nice.

he hasnt been formulaic or even very housey at all, since at least
2004. his releases have been strange and it is debatable if some is
even house at all (his last one on Mahogani before this, black
mahogani 2, etc). i dont know why you wouldnt be paying attention,
some of his best tracks have been released in the past few years: the
2 private collections, ampapella,

if anything, until these past 2 with mick collins id say he was
leaning far more jazzy, but these 2 have been very odd. this newest
one is really good.

Re: (313) OT -- something actually new, I think

2007-11-08 Thread fab.
yeah, i can't belive this album is getting championed as new musicfor
me there is nothing fresh and innovative in this album nor dubstep in
general.
what's new about slowed down ukgarage with muted sound effects and samples
of rainfall? sounds like moody garage for heartbroken croydon chavs to me.
it's even got the helium vocals for crying out loud!

i found it very boring and flat.

and dubstep just sounds like the dnb-ish trip hop that used to come out on
austrian compilations back in the early nineties - and there is nothing new
about that.

i bet this dubstep thing will be off the radar in 18 months, just like what
happened to the ex-new thing, broken beats.

new music is out there ppl but most of you disdain it..

There's nothing like Burial to divide a group, people seem to absolutely
love it or just don' get it at all. Personally I'm with Martin all the
way here, give me some Scorn any day, Mick Harris has been doing it since
'91.

Not feeling it at all Ken and it's not getting much play in the studio
at all, to my ears, it just sounds really old and a step backwards into
a sound that Dubstep was trying to move away from but it seems to have
fallen into a trap of it's own making.

I much prefer Scorn over Burial...

hi.

if you're an out of towner at the DEMF this weekend, and would like a
free 12 from jared wilson's new imprint, here's what you do:

1. go up and say hi to him. he's got long hair and a beard, and will
most likely be eating a corn dog. he also very well could have
sunglasses on. but just go up and say hey. he's really nice. he'll be
around.

2. when the time comes, ask for a 12. now he'll only have about 20 or
so, but you'll want to get your hands on it. it's total acid goodness
with a TNT (tadd mullinix+todd osborn) remix on the flip.

normally i do not endorse such thingsbut this record is nice and
special. and brutal. good music to snap pigeon necks to, or it's ideal
music with which to eat beef jerky, slam a pint and cry about a
breakup. your call.

have fun at the festival everyone. someone pogo for me during kenny's
set if he plays sweet yesterday or i'm doing fine.

yes, he IS the man.
he had a seminal label called Sounds Never Seen and also a small imprint

IIRC correctly ha also released material on the now legendary roman label
ACV (Robert Armani released on ACV as well...).

He is seen somewhat as a god here in rome, since the heydays of the roman

The Rephlex release is a collection of his best releases on SNS as well as 2

He has started playing live again after a break and he has returned to

closely involved with that early italian experimental techno sound like
the releases on Plasmek and Final Frontier. I don't recall him ever

but im going to do it now: life electronic music will never be much

artist to devote his energies to dancing/prancing/entertaining.
i personally think it is pointless to expect to be visually entertained by
the musician when one goes to see a live electronic act. regardless of who

I was away from my computer when I, possibly, fueled the explosion in
this thread so apologies for not following up.

I was going to apologise for feeding this potentially tired discussion
but I think this topic is crucial for how electronic music performance is
headed, and I mean both artist's performance and DJs. The line between
which is going to seriously blur over the next few years.

Some thoughts:

That MPC or Electribe is a computer. What sets it apart for some people
is it's intuitive physical interface and software that doesn't get in the
way of your creative thoughts. The stability of a single purpose computer
is also a bonus.

This Macbook with appropriate software is exactly the same thing if I can
make the physical interface to the software as intuitive and comfortable
as a pair of decks and a mixer or an MPC. I believe
software/hardware/computers are pretty much there when it comes to that
intuitiveness/physical interface/stability.

I have no qualms with sorting out computer problems live on stage (not
that I get that many, when I've dj'ed, demoed research software and even
given presentations). The ability to recover from a small computer
porblem/broken string/dodgy cable/broken needle is all part and parcel of
being a performer.

Re: (313) could change laptop performances

2007-03-28 Thread fab.

some opinions of mine:
watching someone play a piano is not really entertaining. but it can be
interesting just like watching someone play some midi controllers or
live-program a 909;
the complexities of playing a piano are similar to the complexities of
playing live e.music;
watching ppl play classical music is also interesting or fascinating but i
wouldn't describe it as entertaining

like i said before, i go to watch someone play e.music to listen and
possibly dance to the music in a setting that is different from my living
room - a club or whatever;
i go to classical music concerts to watch people play classical music in a
venue designed for that purpose;

i guess i can conclude saying that i am entertained at these events because
of the venue or situation i am experiencing the music, not becuase the
person or persons performing in front of me are fun to watch.

people said roughly similar things about the piano, back when it was
invented in the 1700s.

they also said that piano music wasn't real music because there was too
much machinery (the elaborate system of keys, levers and felts) between
the musician and the sound-making bit (the strings).

Robert Armani is dead. The Breakeuphoria team has learned today of Robert
Armani's death on the 25/02/07. Since it is not possible to find out if the
news is true or just a sick joke, the event planned for the 23rd of March
that was to host Robert Armani as the main guest is suspended or in anycase
postponed until further notice. We will share any further information as
soon as we receive them.

I will try to find out here in Rome where he has many connections.
If true, this is sad news for us romans - RA was extremely seminal and
influential for the techno scene here.

The name Claude VonStroke actually arose from a night of rambunctious
partying. They were having a betting game of who could come up with the
most ridiculous or funny DJ name, and Barclay came up with Claude Von
Stroke, which after the party everyone started calling him that and it
ended up sticking with him.

I saw him in Dublin about a few months ago as well and I really enjoyed
his set, deep techy and funky. I spent most of the night on the
dancefloor. No regrets. Dirtybird 006 Claude Vonstroke - Beware of the
bird is a brilliant release. But I am a sucker for that sound anyways,
especially the stuff coming out on Audiomatique right now.

First I thought he was German and now I find out he is from the burbs of
Detroit. But I guess Barclay Crenshaw does not exactly roll off the
tongue like Claude Vonstroke.

I was surprised to hear that Mathew Jonson is one of the producers. I was

Has anyone got any recommendations on releases or similar material?

subscribed to this list for 5 and a half years, and am
coming back after a 2 and a half year hiatus.

Some may remember me as Jeff Richards or FC2 Richards.
I'm out of the Navy now, and finished moving around
after finding a new job that brings me to the boring
capital of the world, Salisbury Md. There are no
record stores for 2-3 hours and I don't have any room
for turn tables and records in my town house. So this
list and downloads of my old records are going to be
my fix for awhile.

Sweet!

There are now 420 subscribers to the 313 list. Last time I checked
(October?) there was about 330 or so. The last week or so has brought
a flurry of new subscriptions.

Don't know what this means, but there you have it. Welcome to new
(and returning) subscribers!

funny you should mention milligan,
i heard some unreleased techno (ie. non minimal, 313-ish) stuff him that
was amazing.the guy has serious skills...

(on a side note, these minimal-hating threads that crop up once in a while
are fast becoming like the hawtin-hating threads.played out)

fab.

One of the reasons I sort of exploded over this topic was a combination of
hearing a bunch of tracks that had clever glitchy edits over basically
the same boring boom tsk and seeing, on a message board, people fawning
over Jeff Milligan and this video of him

yeah manbut that works in general

if you're a crap dj, you're a crap dj - and for me a crap dj is one that
sticks to 1 whole genre for the whole set.

the reason i respect villalobos for ex. (OMG!!!111oneoneone) is that he
spins all sorts of stuff - mnml, house, acid, 313; same with sammy dee and
same with zip.hawtin too but he needs to be inspired i guess.

maybe i have been lucky to see these and other djs in less-commercial gigs
where they played for fun and not for the money.

Actually yeah I agree. Hating for hating's sake is never good but...

I think the observation that a single mini-genre being played all night
long is dull is valid.

Re: (313) What's happened to rhythms?

that's why i got bored with electro and stopped listening to it.and i
was a real freak for it
it all started sounding so formulaic, just like 80% of today's minimal
music.

and i agree with whoever said that it's minimal anymore.there is so much
going on in these tracks that it should really be called maximal...;)

fab.

For me, those are two sides of the same coin. It's the bad music coin.
One side there's similar sounding cookie-cutter tracks that try to be
clever.
The other side is straight up horrible.

overwhelming sameness is straight up horrid.

Ryan Burns, a DJ and lover of Detroit Techno who lived in Iowa City,
was found dead in his apartment on November 12th. I know nothing else
about the manner of his death. Some of you may have met Ryan at DEMF
-- he roomed with Tristan and I in 2001.

His obit and discussion about him on the Iowa dance music site Ubersonic:
http://www.ubersonic.org/thread/view/id/2454

Ryan was someone who had a lot of personal problems, which don't
really bear discussing here. If you knew him, you know what I'm
talking about, and if you didn't, well, it doesn't matter. The thing
about Ryan, though, is that there was no one I ever met who loved good
techno and house music more -- it was the one abiding passion in his
life. He led a pretty messy, chaotic life but when you talked to him
about music he could become focused and enthusiastic. When he did,
he'd get a little grin and a faraway look in his eyes.

I know next to nothing about his family or personal life, and hadn't
spoken to him for nearly a year. But if you want to pay respect to
him, next time you drop Shades of Jae -- probably his most prized
possesion and top track -- take a moment to nod your head, because if
there is a heaven, Ryan will be nodding right along with you.

this: http://www.nicklovegrove.co.uk/nokia.jpg

Gramaphone, HardWax, Smallfish and others are all providing tips for a

So the Wizard killed it this past weekend, in one of his few stateside
appearances, both of which happened to be within driving distance of
where I live.

His three-and-a-half hour show in LA started with the fast-paced Call
of the Wild, and continued with other pacey techno tracks, with a
nice sprinkling of a few of tracks from Minimal Nation for good
measure. About a third of the way into his set, Jeff started playing
various classics and old school goodies. As Marina said before me, he
played Work it To the Bone, Chip E.'s stuff, and then, he started
playing Detroit classics! After he transitioned into playing the
older tracks, he dropped Reese and Santonio's How to Play Our Music
and the place went wild! He then went on to jam on the 909 for a bit,
and continued with obscure acid and early Detroit techno. One of the
highlights of the Detroit part of his set was the way he programmed a
slightly syncopated 909 beat and blended X-Ray's Let's Go into it
and kept the two going for the duration of the track!

In that night's show alone I heard more Detroit classics than all of
the other Detroit dj's I've heard combined! (yes, he dropped Strings
of Life and Jaguar, too, the timing of which worked very well,
though). It truly was an enjoyable show for anyone who's into the
harder side of techno, and definitely a treat for anyone who enjoys
classic Detroit techno, made even more enjoyable by the fact that he
played late 80's Chicago acid alongside some New York house classics
like the above mentioned Work It to the Bone and an instrumental
version of Searchin' on Nu Groove, for added musical context. If
all those Detroit and Chicago classics weren't enough, he also played
a a version of Basic Channel's Phylyps Trak (the track called Axis, on
the Phylyps Trak ep) alongside the more straight ahead techno, and
that had just sealed the deal for me as probably the best techno show
I've ever seen; along with Mills' next day appearance a few hundred
miles up the road in San Francisco.

His saturday gig was also on point. He played the 909 live (again),
along with a little sample he played off a cd that sounded like a
repeating ping-pong noise (which he also incorporated into the set he
played the night before). He layered that over the somewhat minimal,
introspective, or just plain old Mills-y-sounding tracks at a few
points throughout the evening, to a good effect.

Now, just to keep us old school Detroit fans happy, he even dropped
Derrick May's Wiggin' (in its original version, alongside the New York
and Chicago classics he played the previous night) before moving on to
the harder Tresor stuff; however, the classics focus that night was
definitely on the Tresor side of the Berlin-Detroit connection. He
played quite a few tracks from the x-102 and x-103 albums, a few Rob
Hood tracks, and towards the end he even dropped Maurizio's
hard-as-nails Ploy, which to me was the summit of the evening, making
the the energy at the venue feel like what I would imagine the old
Tresor club in its heyday to have felt like. A few tracks from
Minimal Nation were there too--just like during his LA show, and the
musical selection was kept current by some newer techno tracks by
Sleeparchive and a Joris Voorn track (from the newer tracks that I
recognized). Apparently he also did something amazing with a Basic
Channel track at the SF show, but I got there too late to witness it.

I don't know if these two shows are representative of how Mills plays
now, but if he usually plays with this much intensity, creativity and
variety nowadays (as opposed to some of his recorded minimal/loopy
techno sets I've heard in the past), then he has my vote as the
world's best techno DJ/live act (oh, the live 909 action...) These
were by far the best techno shows I've experienced.

Wojtek

P.S. For those interested, he has a new album coming out in January

devotees of it. Anyway... I've just finished watching Risky Business, and
I've been utterly impressed/dismayed to find out that Maiden Voyage (AKA
8'075'23 from Global Communications' 76:14) is clearly a cover of
Tangerine

Dream's 'Love on a Real Train', which was blatantly made for that film, or
at least titled for it. Did Pritchard/Middleton ever write anything for
themselves or were they always just incredibly brilliant sample whores?

for me Luke Slater is to be remembered by his 7th Plain project and his
releases as Planetary Assualt Systemsesp vols.1, 2, 3; the drone sector
and atomic funkster
im not a big fan of loopy techno but his PAS stuff is very hypnotic and
cerebrallike that track 12 on atomic funkster

his stuff and lives as Luke Slater never made much a mark on me

I remember his early albums being all the rage on the IDM list. Then
he did Alright On Top which I guess was his bid for pop stardom. I
found that pretty simplistic and irritating -- it had that 'I reckon I
wouldn't mind some pop stardom' tang to it, and a feeling that he was
deliberately dumbing things down.

The PAS stuff I remember being a rave staple around these parts, and
it's great music for that.

tunes for 313 listees would be? I definitely wasn't feeling his last

ok, im probably not being too helpful here but.
i would love to have both!

first the 2x12 hoping that it would generate enough revenue to then release
the limited edition, but i dont know if it would be commercially viable.

if i MUST choose, i think i would go for the limited since it appeals to the
collector fetish in me and i dont dj.

yes..would you rather see it re-released as part of a 2x12 with those
remixes (and a 1000+ pressing), or re-released with a bonus unreleased
track, with extra special mastering packaging (and very ltd)?

rarity is less relevent to me, i think good music should be available!
all the remixes dont really appeal to me though, and i hate buying a
double pack for one track. the d+m mastering job would certainly be a
nice quality, as well. i like the idea of you guys doing the rerelease
with a previously unreleased cut with the remixes on the matrix label
(since that way if you want the rmxs you can get them, otherwise you
wont).

(313) latest digs

2006-09-28 Thread fab.

hey list,

bored at work so i am going to share with you what i have been digging
lately (constant rotation):

keep the faith (dust sampler 01) - ESPECIALLY the black dog tracks, sean
deason's and also fred's which is on constant rewind on my ipod. i just love
when the kick comes in totally off kilter.

convextion's live set at bleep. i think we all agree on that one

the martin buttrich planet-e release - Full Clip is a great uplifting track
but still dark and electronic enough to keep me more than happy...the others
are great too.

dave siska's latest set from sonicsunset.com
(http://sonicsunset.org/ci_20060811_dave.mp3) - pure blissful listening
pleasure, IMO one of the best sonisunset sets i have heard ever, also on
constant rotation. keep it up guys!

Re: (313) really

2006-08-30 Thread fab
i will try to offer my opinion coherently

i remember back in the early 90s, magazines like The Face or I-D were
heralding the new decade as the triumph of sample culture, where artistic
expression was to be characterized by the mix-and-matching of different
styles and inspirations, drawing from the myriad of cultural and artistic
production across mankind's different cultures and ages.

Nowadays it seems that the opposite is true. It has been said that all the
possible combination of notes has been played, it is therefore impossible to
create any new musical arrangements. Popular music seems to be totally
dominated by fake-nostalgia bands re-hashing the late 70s, the early 80s - i
have even heard some bands that sound suspiciously like 90s revival bands.
To sum it up, it seems as if there is no new ideas concerning music.

I find that this is not true about electronic music. Although there are
definite trends and cliques (glitch/minimal, detroit, grime, looped bangers,
you name it...), I firmly believe that electronic music in general (and
generally speaking) is, and has ALWAYS been about exploration, innovation,
progression. And this is where I place so-called computer music, laptop
djing, final scratch, ableton live etc. These examples are one tangible
evidence of the evolution of electronic dance music today; but the contrary
is not necessarily true - I am not saying that those who use hardware or
analog equipment do not innovate or are not innovators.

Having said this, I think that one possible direction in electronic music
can be to transcend the different trends and go back to that artistic
ideal that was hyped in back in the 90s, maybe by hybridizing genres and
styles, fishing from everything that has been done before. Just like good
djs who spin good music regardless of what style it is, musicians can do the
same. And they already do. Please excuse me, Im too tired to wrack my brain
to find some pertinent examples but I have noticed music coming out lately
(the last year or so) that I feel has gone beyond normal genre boundaries by
creating interesting hybrids and new future music.

I am aware that there is apparent contradiction in what I am saying: i talk
of generes within electronic music, music that I say is inherently
progressive and then I go on to state that one possible form of ground
breaking is to transcend these genres. But for me these 2 aspects are
complementary and not in contrast. You could say that electronic dance music
is innovative music, therefore mixing its different styles would necessarily
produce our holy grail, ground-breaking music.

my 2 euro cent,
fab

Stoddard, Kamal Scrive:

anyway, who will break the ground next with musical
work? and how will them do it?

That's the question, and the direction this convo should be going IMO.
I'm not sure I even have a quick answer for this one. I ould think of a
few folks I'd say *could* be the next to break ground, but the real
stumper is, how will they do it?. Will it be via process(glitch tech),
aesthetic(neo-soul), cultural influence(afro-beat), what? What'll the
next something pull it's identity from? Will it just be a gimmick in the
end? And on a related but other note, do you think a sound has to have a
scene/movement associated with it's name in order to justify it as
breaking anything? Or is the artistic enough? Holla.

V12, I'd really be interested in your particular point of view here. :)

Without a direct quote or some explanation of what he means by that or
why

I wouldn't write him off.
It could mean just as Matt says below - but damn, that's a loaded
statement. I hope there comes some explanation soonish.
Eamonn - did he ever explain that statement to you?

Well.. I was just asking him what kind of stuff he was DJing these days..
he said he hated blues notes in music.. and black vocals... but that he
used to like otis redding.
He pretty much dismissed 90's techno and seemed pretty much unaware of
anything that had come out of detroit since 1990.
He said it was just his preference now, that he didn't like or play black
music.. not in any way racist [didn't come across like that anyway]..
just seemed like a ridiculous categorization to me!
It's about as ludicrous as that stupid MOBO thing [music of black origin
awards].. I mean, where the hell do you draw the line ? Irish traditional
Music [which has it's roots in Egyptian and Eastern European Music]
influenced american country music, which among others influenced Stevie
Wonder. etc etc etc

Robotnik's a VERY nice guy by the way !

In the US, people in gang neighborhoods rolled up one leg so you could
see their sock, which indicated their 'colors.' This fashion
statement ended up in hip hop videos, and from there apparently
conquered Europe.

I think it's a brave move and probably a good way to present Techno,
especially in the USA - where people are more accepting of the band
format, this is something that Dan Sicko hinted at in his book and seems
to me like the next logical step to, at the very least, making a
difference.
