I can't think of any good reason for a European male to otherise

What about an African male / South American male ? Japanese male ?
He is Dutch - Surinamese as it happens. A minority woman ? Where ?
In whose eyes ?

Eamonn / D1

There is already a dearth of actual women and minorities in the

Live Cine-Mix to Fritz Lang’s Woman in the Moon

Detroit techno legend and long time sci-fi obsessive Jeff Mills brings
his Cine-Mix to the Bay area for the first time with Fritz Lang’s 1929
silent science fiction classic The Woman in the Moon (Die Frau im
Mond, German). Mills composes the soundtrack live while the film
merges with modern electronic sounds, creating a perfect symbiosis
between science fiction and techno. Following the performance, Mills
talks space, time and the origins of his sound. This not-to-be missed
show sold out in Amsterdam, Paris and Glasgow!

The Pace

The Pace is the new project from two DJ/producers previously known for
their techno and ghettotech output.  Jamming and looping up everything
live on keys and drum machines, the duo ridebetween riff-laden techno,
funked up electro and raw house jams, with no backing tracks,
nothingpre-recorded, and no guess where they’ll end up taking the sound.

Both well known producers and DJs in their own fields, Matt Chester and
Guy Thackeray have beenfriends since first working together as resident
selectors and promoters of London’s Flashpoint partiesin 2004.  Each
went on to play clubs and festivals from spots all over Europe to DEMF
in Detroit, but itwas another 7 years before they got their gear
together in the studio to see how live a live act could be.

Matt Chester is known for his exhilarating 3 deck DJ sets and livesets
which range from deepmelody-heavy techno to jacking dancefloor funk,
the live sets all performed on the fly on hardware synths and
drummachines.  He’s played alongside the likes of Underground
Resistance, Surgeon and Octave One,remixed techno mainstays from
Terrence Dixon to DJ 3000 and his releases on the 11th Hour
Recordingslabel have been favourites of DJs from Laurent Garnier to
Anthony “Shake” Shakir and Convextion.DMC magazine described him as
'one of todays most exciting techno talents”.

Guy Thackeray has DJed around the world with his quick-fire mixing and
genre-crossing style.  Takinghis influence from fast-paced Detroit
selectors like DJ Assault, DJ Godfather and 12 Tech Mob, hissets as DJ
Guy have mixed up electro, techno, bass and ghetto beats with the kind
of turntable tricksyou don’t normally see outside of hiphop.  His
productions and remixes lean towards the more melodicend of hook-heavy
ghetto tracks, gracing the crates of underground booty DJs and big
names likeRolando and Dave Clarke alike.

The Pace do what live acts rarely dare, laying down complete full-on
tracks from scratch as they goand taking you along for the
white-knuckle ride.

That said, here's one I think everyone would agree qualifies as

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTBRkL2gltk

Unless you listen to this mix and then it qualifies as dub techno?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1v=2uovB5Ah_GIfeature=fvwrel
Marginally related, I was just reading this article about the deadmau5
button-press affair and there's an interesting bit about Danny
Tenaglia getting heat from NYC house heads for rinsing Maurizio records.

http://hotwaterinc.tumblr.com/post/25938207447/hitstart
Tenaglia got tons of flack from the ?old-school? house DJ community
for playing current, not-necessarily-house music, including trance
(Tilt?s ?Angry Skies? was a Vinyl anthem) and minimal tech-dub
(Maurizio?s ?M-Series? inspired a lot of his own productions). So
while he?s grouped with these guys now, he was something of an outcast
and revolutionary at the time.

(313) UR Mural Oaktown

2011-11-04 Thread james . hurlbut
The port shutdown two days ago was super inspiring. Can't wait to go
check out this mural!!

http://communityrejuvenation.blogspot.com/2011/11/striking-with-art-underground.html

In solidarity with the Oakland General Strike and the Liberate Oakland
Movement, the Community Rejuvenation Project is proud to present our
latest mural, ?Sprouted Prayers: Underground Resistance.? The project
reflects the prayers of our ancestors manifesting in our placement in
the struggle today. At the core of the mural is Underground
Resistance, encouraging 99% struggling for economic and social justice
to remain firm in their commitment. African and Indigenous elders and
Taiwanese freedom fighters stand with the Black Panthers and Harriet
Tubman endorsing and supporting the emerging generation of youth
carrying the movement forward. Calendar images from the Mexica Sun
Stone that mark relevant dates are interspersed with the butterflies
also representing the ancestors. The youngest warrior on the wall is
Selah, the latest addition to the W.O.M.E massive, who was born while
the mural was being painted. Beats 737 added his name to the wall.

The vision for the new piece grew out of a dialogue initiated by
Daniel Zarazua, a CRP photographer and regular collaborator, who
wanted to see connections made to his hometown of Detroit and his
motherland, Taiwan. Underground Resistance also has direct connection
to the techno innovators with the same name. The collective of DJs and
musicians carry a parallel revolutionary message and avant-guard
approach to music. His research also led to the inclusion of the
indigenous Taiwanese freedom fighters who resisted Japanese
imperialism in the 1930s.

The mural features the work of guest artist and master aerosol writer,
Lavie Raven (feature post on Raven coming soon). Raven has visited the
collective regularly and flew in over the weekend to participate in a
series of murals as CRP restores and redoes its works on the Martin
Luther King Cultural Corridor. The project was the historic first
meeting and collaboration between Raven and fellow master practitioner
Mike 360. Rounding out the artists were Beats 737, Muse, Abakus,
Pancho Pescador and Desi W.O.M.E. Photographer and Communications
Director, Eric Arnold even contributed, painting kemetic symbols for
the primarily African American community where the mural resides.

Located at 28th and Martin Luther King Way, the latest mural was
created as part of the CRP?s mural restoration and maintenance
program. When murals fade or are significantly vandalized, the
collective returns to restore or repaint the works. The previous
mural, ?Four Elements,? had received some minor mosquito bites from
the local fan club and faded significantly prior to its replacement
with the latest works.

Re: (313) Moodymann track id?

2011-07-20 Thread james . hurlbut
Speaking of Moodymann appearances wtf is up with this big track Doin
Ya Thing which is basically a beat, some crowd noises and a recording
of Kenny on the mic in Manchester? Seems pretty dodgy to me but I
haven't heard any reactions from the Mahogani camp. I've even heard
Norm Talley playing it so maybe it's got the tacit seal of approval?
Anybody know the scoop?

2011-06-03 Thread james . hurlbut
I probably differ from many of you in thinking that it's amazing the
festival happens at all. I live in one of the most liberal (ok, its
debatable) cities in the US: San Francisco. We could never get away
with a 3 day festival going until midnight at that volume level. Most
city officials are terrified after the tragedy at Love Parade and the
recent media re-focus on rave deaths in LA. the SFPD would never let
all the bars serve all night or till 5am for one festival weekend like
the DPD did this year. And the music is still way better than Lovefest
or Love Parade. So white drug fest or not I still appreciate the
ridiculous organizational and public relations work it takes to pull
off an electronic music festival in the US.

Quoting jwan allen jwan.al...@gmail.com:

I've attended every festival and will continue to go each and every
year. Look for me in one of those stupid visa card commercials 20
years from now. that being said the change to rave till dawn '11 is
disconcerting, but it is what it is.

I did more stuff in and around the city while only hitting the stuff I
wanted to hear, so it was an excellent balance.

I'm not sure if just me being jaded, but I don't even notice the meat
heads and the countless young girls dancing in their underwear they
are just background noise to me at this point.

Re: (313) Tunes?

2011-02-11 Thread james . hurlbut
Went record shopping for the first time in a few months the other
week. Cosmin TRG has made the switch from dubstep to
techno/house/funky and his 50 Weapons and Rush Hour releases sound
very now to me. Digging the Mark Ernestus remix of Konono #1. Also
digging the weirdo analogue vibes of the Sex Tags Mania releases and
the dark industrial sounds of Do Not Resist the Beat #6. Any Shed
related releases are still gold to me: equalized #4, Wax #3. The new
Soundstream is growing on me but I'm not sure what the big deal is
about another nicely produced filter house record. Wenn Meine Mutte
Wusste and Boom Room were the highlights of the Berghain Funf
compilation, the former being Soundstream and the latter Shed. Rush
Hour is up on the anonymous techno tip with the 52.37514724042889
release. On the acid house tip digging the Steve Poindexter State of
Shock Muzique reissue and the Italo Johnson white label.

Hmm... I guess I should mention some Detroit records? Digging the
Marcellus Pittman green Unirhythm and the new Terrence parker Music
Works Vol #1 is some straight up good bumpin garagey house. Omar S
These Complimentary Tracks also caught my ear but haven't really given
this or many of the other mentioned records a good listen yet so this
is mostly store listening reactions. The new Stingray Aqua Team record
is some nice fast frenetic electro. Actually enjoying this one more
than the Urban Tribe release. Lastly, the new Deep Space Orchestra on
ART is some great melodic detroit techno stuff outta England I guess.
Overall I'm still a bit of a sucker for all the trendy anonymous
techno BS. :)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chelseafaith/page2/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/52271...@n00/sets/72157618926534056/

some tech fest 09 highlights for me:
P Maack from D.I.E. lambasting us techno geeks for not grinding with
the ladies at Hump friday night
Jay Denham bringing it strong! I wasnt sure what to expect after the
more chill sounding last album but this is what I imagine seeing him
back in the day was like. Xlent hard techno despite the shitty rig.
Mills!!! Ear bleeding sound, great crowd (even greater after it
thinned out a bit), and Mills bringing it cerebral style. Though
technically not quite up there with the time he came out to the west
coast, the selection was just want I needed.

disappointments:
The Real Detroit Stage. I'm sure it sounded cool after a few drinks at
the bar but the island stage thing has got to be the stupidest
arrangement I have ever seen in my life. so sad.
Shady promoter tactics. One of the artists I was most curious to see,
Benga, apparently was not even scheduled to perform. He didnt show up
and then we noticed in the program a tiny little
asterik next to his name and a tiny comment at the bottom saying
subject to change. this was only on Benga's name! typical Detroit
tactics I suppose

hooj choons:
Definetely was noticing alot of anthems this year. Francois K played
what seemed to me like the detroit classics version of Girl Talk,
remixing on the fly etc. Unfortunately it left me and my friends a bit
cold. I guess we want to hear some new music these days.
heard french kiss a few times, of course from Derrick but he didnt
indulge in the full slow down female interlude. Also heard blackwater
a few places.

But the runaway hit of the fest which I am sure we will hear
more of this Summer was a track from a pretty unknown serbian dude,
gramaphone dzie with a great jazz standard samplefest called Why Dont
You. We heard this cut played by Minx, Delano Smith as well as Luciano.

Tresor's new IOSONO 3D audio system should be entertaining at least.
Apparently its based on the findings of a late 18th century Dutch
Physician (on topic) and uses an array of hundreds of speakers to
create a sweeping sweet spot throughout the room. at least according
to their flash animation.

Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Yeah, I'll be trying to catch those shows too.

On the subject of a near empty Tresor, it's a shame that the new
incarnation seems to have dropped to near the bottom of the order
of choice of destination in Berlin. It's entirely understandable as
there are just so many good clubs there; some of the smaller /
more out of the way / less well known ones I've been to there are
still better than anything we have here in Manchester (though I
know from talking to visiting artists we have our own particular
appeal ;-) and as for the most in demand. But I really like
the new Tresor and am not sure if it's a victim of not being the
freshest line up / name, too big too soon after the relaunch, too
stark and dark, a.n.other reason. I'd loved to have seen it really
take off and expand into that huge space where the chandelier

is.

RE: (313) X-102 clips

2008-06-24 Thread james . hurlbut
As far as I could see, there were no laptops involved in the
performance. Jeff was on 4 cdjs, a couple of mixing consoles and what
looked like a small silver 909 styled box. Mike was on a newish Korg,
some other keyboard, and was using a Tenori-on for sequencing on some
tracks.

They didnt start until around 3:15 and I guess about 10 minutes into
the set they had to stop and draw the curtains back due to technical
difficulties. I got there right when they started again and yes, it
was pure sonic warfare :) Sure, there were alot of slips and off beat
moments throughout like any improv style jam. But when it came
together the thickness and texture of the sound was fantastic.

The venue is a gigantic warehouse with multi-point sound, massive
laser and light rigs and three giant screens so I think the majority
of the crowd couldnt even see the stage or any potential hands in the
air theatrics :) . That is probably why they don't focus much on the
stage presence. The atmosphere is more of what I have seen at raves
than at clubs, with a focus on anonymous performance, except of course
for the big blowup shots of mike and jeff looking earnestly at the
machines in their button down shirts.

Here are a few more clips from the performance. You can see Jeff and
Mike working the machines from the video screens on some of these.

live dub techno set I really enjoy, at the beretta party.

Quoting UI Design [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Yeah,

Alvin's recently reopened after being shut down for years. It was
ultra famous for being THE spot for hip-hop, with Proof and the like
always being there. They reopened about 8 months ago.

I went to a party there the first week of January for Andre of
Mahogani's birthday. I've got a rather funny story from that weekend.
I had a DJ in town from the UK, and we went for Andre's birthday and
had a really good time, Slum Village was playing and they did a total
jam session. I got Alvin's to offer the UK DJ a slot the following
day doing a UK hip-hop/jazzy set, as he plays similar music to what
was being played on the Mahogani/Slum Village gig.

I didn't know this, but Sunday's are usually open-mic night, and it
tends to draw a very different type of crowd than the night before.
Hip-Hop Open-mics tend to get a bit rough in some spots. Actually,
rough is a mild way to phrase it. When we walked in, I was a bit in
shock, because it was totally not what we expected. Completely
different energy than the night before. This poor guy from the UK was
scared to death going up on the decks in front of one of the roughest
crowds I'd seen in Detroit in awhile. People were glaring and actually
growling at him. He smoked all of his cigarettes before even going
on,so he asked me to run to the store while he was DJing. I told him
I couldn't leave him cos they might rush the stage if they didn't like
his set. The look on his face was classic, but I was just being
realistic. It is Detroit after all, and even though people are
normally very friendly, sometimes you walk into a room with intense
energy. He played a wicked set though, and the crowd was actually
really feeling it. It was an interesting experience for the both of
us. I was actually happy he got to experience what its like to play
in a truly Urban Detroit venue with a very rough urban crowd.

Anyhow, basis of my story is that Alvin's is a historic spot. If you
can manage to make it to the backstage area, check out all of the
writing on the walls. I've also got some pics of Alvin's on my
facebook. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=83910id=841750482
The first few in the series are of the back room, we're there talking
with Malik Alston and a hip-hop guy who told us a story of how he's
had more friends die from shoot-outs than he's got alive right now.
Ice on the experience for the guy from the UK. Very Detroit spot.
Very historic. Def recommended, especially for UR. Not sure how the
normal Sunday crowd is going to handle the change up though, but
actually it might be a really good thing, you might get to see some of
the true street dancers show up to this event.

http://pbfb.ca/pac-mondrian/images/detroit_techno_map.jpg

The Detroit Techno level reproduces a cartographically exact map of
downtown Detroit in the style of Piet Mondrian, and marks the birth of
techno in the city.

The address of 1486-1492 Gratiot was known as Techno Boulevard. There
the studios of Juan Atkins' Metroplex Records, Derrick May's Transmat
Records, and Kevin Saunderson's KMS Studios took hold and pumped out
intergalactic funk transmissions to the future. Launching the most
successful cultural export from Detroit since Motown, the funk now had
a raw electronic edge best described by May as what would happen if
George Clinton and Kraftwerk met in an elevator.

In Detroit Techno you dash into the studios of Techno Boulevard and
emerge at The Music Institute, the first club to play techno. DJ
T-1000 put it best: The Music Institute was Detroit's answer to such
legendary house and garage clubs as New York's Paradise Garage and
Chicago's Powerplant. At the beginning of this music, the MI was the
only place you could hear Detroit Techno the way it ought to be heard:
Loud. Bumpin. Funky.

The ghost house marks the 1st Precinct of the Detroit Police Department.

(313) a short luciano review

2007-09-17 Thread james . hurlbut
I'm completing the London leg of my techno tourist holiday and thought
I'd write a little review of my first trip to megaclub Fabric since I
haven't posted any event reviews on this list for many months.

Saturday was megaminimal with luciano headlining supported by Alter
Ego live, Thomas Melchior, and Matt Dear. Thomas Melchior was a bit of
a dissapointment. I find his productions a nice blend of house and
minimal but his live set was too monotonous and flat overall. Alter
Ego was too harsh electroclashy for my tastes. It was baldy (roman
flugel?) on some sort of hardware and the other guy on laptop. Matthew
Dear was playing some pretty hard minimal but the mixing was less than
great with many off mixes.

Luciano came on at 4:30 and I was really impressed with his set. I
missed him at DEMF this year and the last time I caught him playing
was the 2005 DEMF when I was not as into the tracky/minimal techno
sounds.

He started off with a mix of deep house and minimal dropping the
acapella of a Blaze track over some beepy stuff and also a minimal mix
of that big St. Germain downtempo track that I've never heard before
and could be his own mix since he was playing on Serato. He played a
fair amount of detroit music which was surprising to me. Including At
Les which the crowd was really digging. I never considered that a peak
hour song but what do I know. He played a few latin bits including a
nice samba cutup. Other tracks I enjoyed hearing on that booming if
not somewhat distorted system were one of the many mixes of Aardvark's
cult copy, the recent School track by Rob Hood on Music Man, and an
old gemini on relief. After about 3 hours he started tagging with
resident Craig Richards. When I left at 9 they were still playing to a
small dedicated crowd of around 30 people. The mixing was getting a
bit sloppy at that point. In addition to Serato he was using one of
those red sound looping devices occasionally. Some of you may be
disappointed to know that he did not drop Moodymann's Shades of Jae ;)

I'm excited to check out Popkomm this week and then going to check out
that todaysart festival in the hague on Friday. Will write some more
reviews at some point if anyone really cares.

This dude's been using wii remotes as wireless midi controllers for
Traktor. Looks kind of fun. like glowsticks.

Quoting David Powers [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I disagree. Here are the reasons:

a. We already have enough loop based stuff. There is a need for ways
to get away from loops towards constantly evolving materials, rather
than having yet another loop player. In this sense, it's a step in the
wrong direction.

b. The technology exists to do this with all kinds of things. You
could use buy any wireless USB device, map keys in Ableton, and
trigger loops with it on the fly. You can also use a P5 glove which
has existed for ages, or other kinds of MIDI sensors, if you want your
silly dance moves to control the music. None of this is new, it all
exists. What people really need right now are CREATIVITY and
KNOWLEDGE, which seem to be what people are lacking. The future of
electronic music performance is in learning to customize your own
software and setup, to make performances that reflect your unique take
on the music (the same is true for production). The future is not in
these plug and play apps.

c. Need I say it again - the emphasis on visual performance is far too
rock and roll for my taste, even though I play along these days.
Sick music is sick music and that should matter more than the
theatrical aspect [cue Surgeon bent down over his Midi controller
rocking $h!t proper].

d. It doesn't really do THAT much (try listening without the video and
see if you things it is equally great!!!), and they guy looks kinda
dumb doing it.

e. iLoop - hi, I'm a loop, I'm so much fun to play with, not like
that boring stuff where you have to learn about synthesis and modular
programming and frequencies and DSP, I'm fun and I like to party!!!
Just plug me in, take some pills, and go! Now your sets are fun to
watch, yay! (okay I'm getting a little tired of all this mac hype
right now, sorry)

*Just to be fair, the guy obviously is a good max/msp programmer.
Mainly what this guy has done well is parameter mapping - he's got an
intuitive way of using the Wii movements to generate related stuff in
his application. That's a part of good instrument design, and it does
create a bigger link between what people see and what they hear.

(313) Track ID (minimal)

Can anyone help me out on this one? Heard hawtin and a few others play
it recently.

1:00:00 mark in this set:

The dissonant melody could almost be interpreted as detroity but its
clearly a minimal track.

For the bay area listers, my friends and I are bringing out Miksate to
SF on Feb. 10th. More info and a snippet of her live set here:

So, I'm only catching up on my listservs now (I had a 3-night run of
clubbing here in Paris. Gui Boratto @ Pulp, Exercise One Anja
Schneider @ Nouveau Casino, and MyMy Jesse Rose @ Rex...so not much
email-checking).

Anyway, I just wanted to add that I've been loving Miskate's releases
on FoundSound to bits. I loved the Rip It Cookie Muenster EP, but I'm
also digging her more recent work, like the Pharm Whacker EP (although
I have trouble imagining myself mixing it into a set). If you're a fan
of the clickity-clack school of microhouse + thumpy but
well-articulated bass, she's your woman.

And DJ Sassmouth rocks on many levels. Miss ya Sam!

Hello Chicago friends-
Just a quick note here to inform you of two great shows in Chicago...today
and tomorrow... Thu.Jan.18th (Smart Bar) + Fri.Jan.19th (Sonotheque).

Not to threadjack here, but I feel obligated to mention another great
show in Chicago tonight, Jan 18 at Sonotheque. Simko and Sassmouth are
both great DJ's and Miskate did some really great tracks in 2006:

Wake Up! Moves to 3rd Thursdays at Sonotheque!
To celebrate the new monthly, curators Kate Simko and Sassmouth are proud
to host Philadelphia-based label owner and producer Miskate!
Miskate has been making waves in Europe and across the U.S. with
her live set. Join us for her first Chicago appearance!

Residents Kate Simko and DJ Sassmouth round off the night with DJ sets.

MISKATE
Miskate is Kate Iwanowicz. originally a Pittsburgh dj, she held down
various residencies in that area. she received a degree in anthropology
(and a minor in music) at university of pittsburgh -- where she also
participated in a gamelan ensemble. her interests in sound began at a
young age-first playing violin, then piano, then guitar, now sample-based
electronics (often incorporating her own singing voice among other found
sounds). her regular bookings playing deep, minimal house and techno
encouraged her move to philadelphia in summer 2001. after relocating, she
had taken responsibilities as co-organizer of both the pitchspork monthly
(hosting names like magda, matthew dear, sammy dee, geoff white, jeff
milligan and others) and the foundsound record label. her production debut
came in may 2004 with the release of rip it cookie muenster
(foundsound01). since then, miskate hammered out eps for foundsound,
microcosm, alphahouse, roman-photo, karloff, einmaleins and plenty more to
come.

Re: (313) Track ID - Classic track !

2007-01-23 Thread james . hurlbut
Sounds like Rodamaal - Insomnia. probably the ame remix. Did it have
some sexy portuguese vocals? Used to love that track but its charm has
been lost in a sea of epic lush ame ripoffs.

http://www.discogs.com/release/465408. weird that Ame's discogs artist
page isnt showing any releases for me today.

Rhaa I totally dont know that track and I am almost sure this is a
classic (Todd Terry ?). But the fact is that i have heard it recently
at Depp Space @ Cielo NY, but also in a party with Laurent Garnier and
in a recorded show from Deetron.

The track has some kindof slow 'Garage' rythm, a synth line that make
me think to Kill Bill gimmick, and a voice saying

Find it, Give it, Work it, Share it
Find it, Give it, Work it, Spread it

(maybe i made some mistake as my undesrtanding of lyrics in English is
quite bad).
