(313) 313 role call

2013-01-23 Thread Lechowicz, Thomas
Hey all, new to 313 by about 2 days. 21 from Pittsburgh, PA and was converted
to Detroit about two and a half years back by Shawn Rudiman at the first VIA
gig here in town. He recommended Dan Sicko's book to me a month ago and here I
am. Most my age hear Techno and instantly think dubstep... so you can
understand how relieved I am to find a community that knows what techno really
is. Looking forward to the conversations to come

Hello Thomas,

Welcome to the 313 list. Did you move to Detroit or do you mean you've
been converted to Detroit techno via Shawn Rudiman? If you in
Pittsburgh, you might want to check out your local heroes, The
Pittsburg Track Authority. I don't think they have a website, but here
is a link where you can listen to their stuff. Not quite Detroit, but
definitely Detroit techno influenced.

One member of the group has a blog too. Lots of cool and interesting
DJ mixes and interviews.

Shake is aware of this problem. The problem -- I suspect -- is that
his e-mail machine is infected with a virus of some sort.

Tony is a brilliant musician, not a computer technician. It would be
great if someone who actually lives in the Detroit area and is
acquainted with him would volunteer to check his machine and get
things fixed up.

The reason I haven't yet blocked his address is that it would mean he

Malwarebytes (note that software updates are done manually)

At risk of sounding like an endorsement, both programs do a surprisingly
good job of protecting your computer from viruses considering that they are
free. I gave up Norton years ago in favor of these two. They also don't bog
my system down nearly as much as Norton did.

1) Download and install AVG and Malwarebytes
2) Uninstall whatever existing antivirus software he has on his machine now.
3) Run Malwarebytes and AVG scans

Hope this helps him,

Hey all

Been a long time just reading 313 emails but haven't sent any out.

I wish I could say I was going around to every record store in town this
weekend but I'm not.
Actually, saving money for an upcoming trip to San Francisco. An
afternoon at Amoeba will be my delayed record store day.
I tend to stay away from record stores on their official day - just too
many people in stores that never shop in record stores. Kind of a pain in
the butt imo.

By the way, has anyone let Shake know that his email account has been
hijacked?

with the start of human mating season. Had a very nice day at the Chicago
Record Collector's show this past weekend. Found beautiful copies of MK's
Burning on Area 10, the first release on Balance (CVO Party Time), and
Waiting on my Angel on Persona. All for $2 each too! Plus a nice stack of old
disco and house for $1-2 dollars each that I need to go through this weekend.

Hmm, what else is shaking? Went to the Planet E 20th in Detroit a few weeks
back. Highlights were a surprise set from Shake playing with Urban Tribe and
 free records.

What else? Waiting for the Rick Wilhite full length to drop.

What is shaking with the rest of you?

Next vinyl release just submitted contains Huckaby remix.

Release after that is Aaron-Carl's last remix ep with additional
mixes from Pirahnahead and Baaz.

Thinking of attending DEMF. It's been years since I've been back over there.

Disk Union is wicked for new and 2nd hand stuff there 313 section is massive

Lots of the techno stores seems to have shut the last time was there which is a

Hello from Dallas - I'll be honeymooning in Tokyo Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2010 and plan
on trying to check out Dommune based on some posts to the 313 list. Any 313ers
have recommendations for other clubs/techno music resources in the city? I've
checked out a club called Eleven and scouted the Tokyo Gig Guide, but wanted to
hear back from those I trust the most... you guys. I expect record shopping is

Clubs - I don't think there have been many techno things going on in Tokyo

Womb, Air (as far as I can make out they are still doing techno/ house)
 directory wise just Resident Advisor

RE: (313) 313'ers in Tokyo? Techno recommendations?

2010-10-27 Thread Tom Langford

I live in Nagoya, but been to Tokyo enough to know the place half decent.

Clubs; Eleven is run by the same people as Yellow and in the same space - sadly
been to neither as Yellow closed before I got here. Good clubs are Unit, Air
not been to Module, Warehouse 702 but heard they're good. Then there is Womb, a
huge club, sometimes great sometimes not so great, depends entirely on the
night really and who is DJing.

Record stores; definitely check out Shibuya, really good 'Banana Records'
there, not too expensive as they deal in new used.

synth shops; not sure whether this is relevant at all, but everytime I'm in
Tokyo I make sure to call into www.echigoyamusic.com, this and a place called
FiveG are crazy. Lined wall to wall with synths, fx etc... friendly staff, free
to test the stuff out. Some (most) of the stuff is pricey but you can find some
bargains now and again.

(313) 313 on Rephlex, now more downloady

2010-09-16 Thread kent williams
Just like Rephlex to be under the radar doing their own thing, but I
stumbled upon the fact that they've digitized the entire catalog and
sell mp3s/wav direct. Which has direct 313 implications:

http://www.rephlex.com/artists/view/Urban%20Tribe
http://www.rephlex.com/artists/view/Dopplereffekt

They don't have the Drexciya Molecular Enhancement record, and as
far as I can tell, that has never been released digitally -- either on
CD or download. And Submerge doesn't currently show that in its vinyl
stock.

(313) 313 in da 323 - Sandwell District Tour 2009

2009-04-07 Thread Greg Earle
Good (313) event this weekend in LA. Besides Regis, Silent Servant

REGIS vs FUNCTION live PA
Sandwell District // UK + Berlin

A truly unique operation...SANDWELL DISTRICT

SANDWELL DISTRICT is the underground Techno label of the moment. With
support from all quarters (Dettmann + Klock, Laurent Garnier, Jeff
Mills, and Speedy J to name a few) the label collapses techno's
boundaries and rebuilds the genre in its own unique image. As
stalwarts of the hugely influential label Downwards, Function and
Regis have pushed the dance music envelope for over a decade.
Sandwell District however is a beast of its own, a label of the here
and now. Pushing new boundaries with each EP, Sandwell has earned
label of the month in both DJ Mag and Resident Advisor and caused
waves within the industry. Function and Regis' approach to live/DJ
work similarly challenges convention, with a combined digital/analogue
environment allowing both artists to feed off one another during their
performance.

my mate's visiting Sydney (well, he's been there for 2 months now), and
he's complaining about the lack of good 313 related parties and venues
there.

Have you got any suggestions / recommendations that I could pass to him?

And my apologies to you if this request found you offended. You probably
may have a bit more to think than of a party at this hour with the
forest/landfires roaming there. Wasn't thinking. :/

time is anytime.

It's pretty hard to find 313 only events in Sydney and has been for
sometime. But from what I hear and what Mike suggested, Space Is The

He should come down to Melbourne one weekend, the club scene is
bigger and more diverse. Traditionally Melbourne is far more 313
friendly. Spacey Space, very 313 friendly Melbourne DJ, is playing a
bushfire benefit at Tramp tonight down here (though keep in mind the
city is thick with bushfire smoke if you're asthmatic). If he is in
Syd he might do well to catch the Future Classic party with Todd
Terje this weekend - vg DJ.

The fires are in the state of Victoria and affecting Melbourne so I
don't think they'll be offended in Syd. There are a few club benefits
down here with monies raised going to the Red Cross so you can pop

(313) 313 in da 323 - Interface 24 with Rolando and DJ Bone Nov. 29th

2008-11-17 Thread Greg Earle

Oh yeah baby. The Droidies do it again:

Saturday November 29th
Droid Behavior presents Interface 24 /// REAL DETROIT TECHNO

DETROIT.TECHNO:HOUSE:ACID:MINIMAL

DJ Rolando
UR : 430 West : Delsin // Detroit

Rolando was born in the 70's in the southwest of Detroit...Mexican
Town. He began DJ-ing as a teenager and earned respect as well as
attention of the Mad Mike Banks. He soon joined the infamous
Underground Resistance and learned his chops as a producer and
performer. In 1999 his release of Knights of the Jaguar broke the
ice and turned archaic perceptions of techno on their head. A cross
genre hit, the song broke boundaries and became an instant classic
with DJ's as diverse as Francois K, Danny Tenaglia, and even Oakenfold.
The record put focus back on the Motor City. Along with his soulful
productions, Rolando has wowed audiences worldwide with his speedy
turntabalism and eclectic sets of funky house, rugged electro, and
deep Detroit techno. Rolando makes his long awaited return to LA 10
years later for this special West Coast appearance. Do not miss this
moment in essential underground.

DJ Bone
Subject Detroit : Metroplex // Detroit

Bone is a true champion of the underground. His uncompromising
attitude and fierce independence have allowed him to play by his own
rules and violate industry expectations. He's a DJ in the true
essence of Detroit style: aggressively skillful, deep, and funky. He
is also a successful producer and runs the highly acclaimed Subject
Detroit label. Bone's performances remind crowds to focus on the DJ by
employing every technique in his masterful arsenal: blends, scratches,
backspins, and his unrivaled use of the fader. This is a lesson not
to be missed.

The 2562 album 'Aerial' is fairly insane. One of the better techno
things I've heard in a while, and I'm told it's dubstep. Following a
thread about newer dubstep stuff on Disception recently I picked these

 up too:

TRG/Dub U - Losing Marbles [Hotflush Recordings] Pangea - Deviant
[Hessle Audio UK] TRG - Feel For You [Subway Holland] TRG - Missed
Calls [Subway Holland] Kontext - Plumes [Immerse]

 Other new [313]-related stuff:

Kenny Larkin - Keys Strings Tambourines [Planet E US] - I like it, but

I think Glob is the only really essential track on it. I'm one of the
few who likes a fair amount of his recent stuff, so much so that I
think the Narcissist is better than this.

I got three EPs from Kadebostan. All are excellent. Check them out. I
suspect he's French, so not sure why I'm mentioning them as though
they're [313] related, but it's good stuff. I suppose Freude Am Tamzen

 is a [313] tangent.

I finally caught up with all the Terence Dixon stuff on Yore, End to
enD and Nice Nasty. There's tracks on all of these that are worth
 grabbing.
 Proper
 techno.

The Dedicated JB track from Stereocity on Deep Explorer.

Inverse Cinematics - The Rise Fall (Sam Irl remix) [Pulver Germany]

All the Workshop stuff that I hadn't already picked up.

The Mole's I've Got My A1 and When It Tastes So Good, You Deserve It

Roland Appel's Lost Valley and New Love

 Mujaba's Fuelta

Three of the tracks on the latest Secondo album on Soul Jazz

The Asphalt - 8 Mile Road (Juju Jordash mix) [Deep Explorer]

All of the CIMA stuff. Massive Wayne Gardiner catch-up business. That
and the Wayne Gardiner's Classic Man Nervous Tracks.

Buying stuff digitally is good! I got some other stuff too that ain't
very [313]-relevant which I'll probably review on my blog before too
 long.

They won't let you waiver - music is music to mcps/prs etc and they

do close people down for it.

This is a New Zealand site remember, so it's controlled by local
organisation RIANZ not any American organisation. I'm guessing their

fees are equally prohibitive though, because *no-one* offers
podcasts or even streaming archived shows here unless they consist
 purely of talk.

So I did some snooping and the local situation is this (turned out it

was an organisation called Phonographic Performances New Zealand who
 control broadcast licenses here):

PPNZ does not have an existing assignment to blanket licence
podcasts at the present time. Any broadcaster seeking to make
available music on demand is required to seek the permission of the
 individual copyright owners concerned.

So it's more or less impossible to archive music radio online from
 here!Madness...

heard Kraftwerk he realised that they had the same sounding percussion
sounds that he was producing using his synths.
Sure you could say that Roland created a mechanical footprint for dance
music, but that but Juan actually synthesized the very sounds that would
become 'techno'. Sur at the same time as other revolutionaries on planet

That was exactly my point. If you ask me, it proves that Detroit

The whole argument is pointless. Trans Europe Express and Autobahn were
huge hits on black radio. I know because I heard them a lot on the
major DC stations (WOL and WOOK) at the time. Same in Detroit I'm sure.
Whether Juan was influenced directly or not is for him to say.
Influence could mean I heard it on the radio or it could mean I had
the album and studied how they were making the sounds. For our
purposes here, what does it matter, Kowalsky?

For what it's worth, the first electronic pop hit I recall was Dick
Hyman's Minotaur. That was 1968. He's a pretty remarkable guy, by
the way -- had an illustrious career as a jazz player, composer and
researcher and is still alive. He has recordings released in every
medium from 78s to MP3s.

co-signed. I see techno as an extension of disco and kw/td-style stuff.
there was nothing to be invented, we just (d)evolved

That's exactly what i was saying to Frank. I didn't understand what
 you're asking.

But, i agree with you. This argument is pointless. And more pointless is
to imagine a world where techno exists and kraftwerk doesn't.
The kraftwerk sound signature can be heard, clearly, in many detroit
 tunes. That's an undeniable fact.

2008-06-03 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I might be mistaken, but I try not to lie and I do quite remember
reading a different interview [although I'm sorry I can't remember where
or when] in which Juan was more direct about how KW might have
influenced some of his early productions. It was pretty unequivocal, as
far as I remember, which is why I'm [a little!] puzzled that this issue
has reared it's interesting head again. All might well be revealed soon
I guess ...

But Juan Atkins said numerous times that he was listenning to the
'Electrifying Mojo' radio show right ? Way before starting recording
'Clear' or 'Alleys Of Your Mind'...

Not only Juan, Derrick, Kevin, Jeff, Alan, all a generation listenned to
him.

Mojo played a lot of Kraftwerk music ... It's said in all documents that
can be found around the web. Maybe he heard them without being aware who
was doing this music and has been influenced without being really sure
of what it was ?

I've a lot of problems to trust that Juan Atkins was not influenced by
Kraftwerk knowing from various interviews that his wish to record music
came a lot from listenning to Mojo.

And when you ask peoples in Detroit what kind of music Mojo was
playing... First name to emerge is definitely Kraftwerk.

Just my point...

That was exactly my point. If you ask me, it proves that Detroit
techno would have existed even if Kraftwerk had not existed, because
Juan said he was already doing techno before hearing kraftwerk!

well, i was just reading an article from the march 1999 issue of (now
defunct) muzik magazine. it was an ongoing feature in which they'd
have a techno personality come up with a list of favorite songs for a
hypothetical mixtape. juan atkins was featured in this particular do
us a tape and he said this:

track 9: kraftwerk - numbers - warner brothers: I froze in my tracks
when I heard this. It was on the radio one night and I was like 'what
is this?' **I was making music already, doing totally electronic
recordings and the similarities freaked me out.** I used to go to the
music store and just play around with the synthesiser. I think it had
the same impact on music as the electric guitar did when that was

Additionally, while the mentions of funk and disco are relevant, the
'conglomeration of synth-pop' you cite above can be argued as having largely
 evolved from kraftwerkian tendrils.
We might have had some form of YMO as a factor, but even they cite the well
known cyclists as formative - and besides, they still don't have the
 recognition factor of Kraftwerk.
