RE: (313) Defining Detroit

2014-01-31 Thread logic7
I think that this list, along with trips to Youtube to watch old clips of
The New Dance Show and The Scene are really the only things keeping me
connected to Detroit nowadays. I haven't lived in SE michigan in nearly 11
years now and have yet to come back to visit. I don't have a FB or Twitter
account (Myspace was it for me), so this list has kept me informed of new
releases and whatnot.

Just want to say thanks to everyone on here.

I've been a long time 313 subscriber. Then got a few years off, now I'm
back. I must say I like the list to be low traffic, as it gets more
specialized and not so noisy as it tended to be in the past. All in all, I
must say the list has done a wonderful job of self-regulation. I guess in
our hearts everyone knows the list allows for some freedom, and we try to
use it wisely. It's still a pretty high quality list, in my opinion.

Re: (313) Re:Radio UR

2014-01-05 Thread Nathan Goode
Talking of Suburban Knight I came across this mix on YouTube
http://youtu.be/Ud41C8Mhml0
I remember recording the audio from the groovetech site but didn't get all of
it, so glad I found it. So many great tracks on here. There are a couple I
don't know which might get me thrown off 313 ;-) but I'd be grateful if anyone
could tell me what is playing at 8.39 (sounds very Red Planet/UR)and also
starting at 1.39.50. I'm sure they are easy for you knowledgable folk.

Cheers

Hey all,
Was just listening to an old 4hero album 'The Early Plates' and couldn't
help but notice that on the track 'Rising Son' there is a flute sample that
is also in the UR/Members Of The House track 'UR My People' - that hard to
find white label.

I know there is alot of mutual respect between the two camps, but was
wondering if MOTH borrowed from 4hero or another source?

Thanks for the tips, I'd managed to miss both of those.

Here are a couple I did buy recently:

Fabrice Lig's 1998 EP Find Your Future (remastered for Bandcamp):

and Ian O'Briens I was There, 1995-2000 LP:

(Ian has a couple other LPs up as well, with all proceeds going to charity)

Re: (313) New Records Bandcamp

2013-12-20 Thread David Powers
Thank you for sharing, I am going to buy Claude's album right now, I think
it sounds really nice, classic Detroit techno for sure.
There is a LOT of great 313 music coming out at this time, despite low list
traffic I think it's a great time for Detroit house and techno.
I hope anyone who is buying Detroit music can please take the time to
mention releases they like here! (maybe people just aren't buying as many
records...)

2013-12-19 Thread Steve
I've followed the list for a lot more time than I've been making music.
It's an origin of some music I am very interested in. If it were just about
any kind of music from Detroit-based artists (of all kinds of music I mean)
I wouldn't be following it. My feeling is that this is a list with respect
to those roots. People of Detroit have a privilege in having a strong
localised and unique music history. I read the Techno Rebels book. I
appreciate that there is a lot of house music and soulful music enthusiasts
on the list too. It's not about one particular style or another. There's
Detroit music in the DNA. I think luminaries from Detroit and like-minded
people around the world continue to follow the list. The spirit lives on.

I identify with Detroit/313. Does that count? :)

Ok fair enough guys,

Of course I don't make the rules but was just asking what others thought. I
guess this would also open the door for anyone to post anything as long as
they're familiar with Detroit artists/sound or feel that what they are
sharing sounds like it too etc which I thought may be going a but too far
with it.

If that's the case then an argument could be made for a high percentage of
dance music out there (since it's so subjective), could it not? ;)

Given the amount of traffic on this list these days anything remotely related
to Detroit works for me ;)

Ok fair enough guys,
Of course I don't make the rules but was just asking what others thought. I
guess this would also open the door for anyone to post anything as long as
they're familiar with Detroit artists/sound or feel that what they are
sharing sounds like it too etc which I thought may be going a but too far
with it.
If that's the case then an argument could be made for a high percentage of
dance music out there (since it's so subjective), could it not? ;)

I agree with Joe on this one.I do accept that this issue is obviously not cut and dried though. For instance, I would be more receptive if someone came on here and posted stuff about moderately known to very obscure Chicago house, or whatever. So yes, what governs the idea of what type of music to promote on the list is quite a subjective set of considerations. I think the issue with pertin-nce, for me, is that it feels like for the last several years, the list has been bombarded by updates about a pet project, in tortuous detail, which hardly anyone else on the list is feeling. If that's what people want though, fair enough. I
guess, to me, this list is already waning pretty severely. Banning artists and
labels not from Detroit would be akin to pulling the plug on it altogether.
You'd get the annual "complain about DEMF" thread and that's about it (not that
those aren't entertaining).I would *love* to hear more
impressions of new Detroit releases though. My record-buying budget at age 33 is
not what it was when I was 23 and single, so I end up missing a lot of worthy
material.Just to get under Joe's skin a little (hey, you did
say I was too nice a while back :-p), my 13-track LP of Reno/Atlanta/Los

All good, and you're still too nice ;)

I guess I wouldn't mind the occasional off topic (for lack of a
better term) but the frequency of those posts prompted me to send out
that initial message. I totally don't mind radio silence once 'cause
if there's nothing to say then so be it. I'm sure we all have other
things to keep us occupied in the meantime.

Back on topic, here's a feature for top 2013 tracks from Inverted
Audio. They called upon some artists/labels to submit their favorites
of 2013, including yours truly. Some good 313 stuff here:

(313) Orbiter EP + more music

2013-12-16 Thread Steve
Hello

A little earlier in the year I made this 3-track EP with mastering by
someone recommended by a friend. I think there's some analog gear there
which I like. I was holding out in case I could get it released on a label
but I'm sharing it for free on my SoundCloud page now. It's my best work
and I've got some other interesting things in the pipeline. I like making
music but I don't think I could do it all the time or business-like. Feel
free to share.

https://soundcloud.com/kerr-knoll/sets/orbiter-ep

If it's not there right now (as has happened before) then it's just rolling
out via the SoundCloud content-delivery-network so please try again later.

I've made all my music on SoundCloud available to download as CD-quality
44.1kHz 16-bit .wav files. Couldn't settle for either FLAC or ALAC (and mp3
just unsuitable for transcoding).

Two tracks from my recent mix, Aquatic Experiments and Moon Base also
uploaded today.

Cheers

Steve

These are the important questions in life I think?

Listened to much hip-hop or dance music? If so, then you would have
undoubtedly heard the sounds of either the Roland 808, 303 or 909 -
but what are they and what do these numbers mean?
BBC Radio 1's Kutski discovers how three small electronic boxes from
the 1980's sculpted the sound of both Hip-Hop and Dance music. He
makes it his mission to track down the team that worked on the Roland
808, 303 and 909 machines to see if they had any idea their inventions
would have such a massive influence on contemporary music.
He plots their integral role in the development of hip-hop, house and
techno; and the myriad of sub-genres that have spawned from these.
Kutski chats to DJ Premier, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler, The 2Bears,
Flostradamus and Pete Tong amongst others as he founds out why
producers around the globe continue to be obsessed with these sounds,
more than three decades after they were first created.

This is what a lot of people don’t know about me. I am a legend in
Detroit, because everyone will tell you “Fowlkes jumpstarted this
whole game of Detroit Techno”. People will tell you that because I had
that epiphany from God to start this entire domino effect. A lot of

Re: (313) Return to a free DEMF on July 4th?

2013-11-21 Thread David Powers
Okay, let's not be idealistic. Events of this size and scale are done for
money. The logistics and scale are too crazy to justify doing for the love
of music. If people want to do an event for the love of music, they find a
loft, scrape some money together, and fly in a couple of talented DJ's
whose music they believe in.

Personally, I have grown to dislike festivals in general, they just do not
have a vibe I can get into. I suppose it's okay to help artists get paid
well, but at the same time, I tend to lose respect for artists who ONLY
play festival size events.

As far as this particular festival, the important question is, whether the
commercial events have a positive impact on the more underground scene,
with good events springing up around the large scale event. This has been
the best aspect of DEMF in my view, to the extent that last year I didn't
enter the main festival at all, and probably had the most enjoyable DEMF
experience yet.

everyone breaks even. One tries to sell VIP bracelets.

I hope it's the former type of event, but I suspect its the latter.

Personally, I'm in a wait and see mode, let's see what the line-up at
both venues will be and go from there. I'm hoping they've taken some
notes from what paxahau has done over the years in terms of logistics,
which has made it easier for those coming from a great distance to
plan accordingly. We've been spoiled, we can drive up to the D at a
moments notice being only a 4.5 hr drive away. Which I feel is the
limit on any last minute preparations.

While I believe competition is a great thing at the end of the day,
I'm just curious how 3 major music festivals occurring within weeks of
each other are going to handle artists bookings. Will any of them
attempt to coerce an artist into an exclusivity spring/summer
booking, etc. Rather than continue with endless speculation, I'll just
wait and see and keep an eye on my shorecrest reservations.

Real Detroit has another article with some great quotes too.

$300 is for the conference element at Ford Field. The free fest will
be surrounding Campus Martius Park with 5 stages.

I've heard the hullaballoo about Carol for years, and then had the
pleasure to work with her at Campus Martius for many years there
after. She has her quirks, and I know a lot of people who've had
troubles with her, I myself have had a few worrisome moments, but
she's overall a solid person, and seeing that she's gonna do this,
well, it makes me think there's some real force behind it. She's had
to have put some serious time into the planning of this thing. We'll
see how it pans out, but I think the interview she did with Real

While having two festivals will be great locally, it will be interesting to see
how this pans out demographically with foreign visitors. There has been a
slight resurgence of folks from abroad coming back to Movement.

With two festivals to pick from most people from outside of the area will pick
one or the other and the majority will not be able to do both. Regardless of
what Ms. Marvin tries to diplomatically brush over with the there should be 10
techno festivals a year line, this is a direct competition with Movement, and
not admitting admitting that is interesting.

I guess the lineups will be key.

Another question none of the articles have answered at this point is what the
free area in Campus Martius will have musically vs. the $300 for Ford Field.

This seems to be using the same paradigm as Ultra/WMC used for a bit, albeit
not with two large outdoor venues.

Also curious as to where all of this money materialized from. Time will tell.
Rachel Skotarczyk (Real Detroit) seems to be truly infatuated with Ms. Marvin.

There is a lot of talk in the article of unity, but honestly, not seeing how

I went to Detroit Taste Fest on the 4th of July weekend 2002, and saw
War, Joan Jett, and John Aquaviva. Top that, Carol Marvin.

I am going to try hard to be around DEMF weekend, but I may not
actually go to the festival. It's tempting to go back again in July.
The weather in July is more to my liking anyway.

Carol Marvin. That is all. She once chastised me in a public forum for
saying DEMF and not saying Movement. I've moved on.

Why the hell will anyone want to pay $250 + for this? $1200 for VIP? The
 fuck?

Am I missing something or is this as stupid as it sounds on first look?

Another question none of the articles have answered at this point is what
the free area in Campus Martius will have musically vs. the $300 for Ford
 Field.

This seems to be using the same paradigm as Ultra/WMC used for a bit, albeit
not with two large outdoor venues.

Also curious as to where all of this money materialized from

Also curious as to where all of this money materialized from. Time will
tell. Rachel Skotarczyk (Real Detroit) seems to be truly infatuated with
 Ms.
  Marvin.

There is a lot of talk in the article of unity, but honestly, not seeing
 how
that can be true regarding these two festivals.
