Re: (313) Oliver Ho

2006-07-04 Thread Wes Prince
Ho's music has a real sense of history embedded in its grooves, like a lot
of the best Detroit techno. Some real mental energy & spirit to complement
the sensuality of the rhythms.

That inner track flowing on from the Pure mix of "Magick" (Meta 19) always
slays me with its sampled voiceover: "I go with my feelings, you know, I
love music...the only thing that makes me play & continue (in) this business
is my love for music."

Sounds a bit like Miles in a good mood. Anyone have any idea who Ho's
sampling here?

I'm surprised he's in LA at all. When I think LA clubs I think:
Lindsay Lohan DJing and DJ AM/Nicole Richie, eek.

Unless I'm completely mistaken Oliver Ho is still living in London.
He played a brilliant back-room set at the last Lost. He was all
over the shop - even throwing in some Miles Davis. Not his typical
main-room set at all, but quite nice.

Ho's still around. He recently played a night called Alcatraz in Liverpool.
I didn't go cos I was out of town, but I heard his set was amazing. I think
he's still in LA. Last bit of tunes I got through of his was an original CD
set from 2 WMCs ago. Def a good CD. It's been an afterparty favourite at
my house quite a bit. I'm such a fan, I've even got a Ho T-shirt. lol.

I dimly remember people saying Surgeon bit Mills' style, but if I
remember correctly, once Jeff started playing Surgeon records, people
shut up. If anyone took the time to listen to his music, they were
always records in the same general style as Mills, but completely his

And Surgeon has indeed gone on to do amazing things that have nothing

Hey I thought it was out already. I have a cd which I was kindly given.
Oliver Ho only ocasionally does stuff which I like a lot (nowadays that is -
yeah it's grand dad Ken here!) but this LP is indeed quite special. Won't
say any more here. Will try to find out if there's been a delay ...

(313) Oliver Ho on the radio

2004-06-03 Thread dan

Hello

Some of you might be interested to know that my guest on this week's
show is Oliver Ho.

He'll be doing a mix + I have some free copies of his new album on
Meta to give away on CD. It's not out in the shops yet and is dead
good (IMO) + the mix should be a cracker as well, plenty deep!

I'm not going to bother with any competition nonsense, if people text
in during the show I'll pull some names out of the hat etc etc.

The timings are: This Friday night 1am-4am BST (mix will probably
kick off at about 1.05).

To listen go to http://www.passion1079.com and click on the live
streaming link, or if you're in the Oxford area you can tune in on
the wireless at 107.9FM.

The text number is 07970 441079

Enjoy!

Dan.

P.S. Thanks to all for the Movement reports! I'll leave it at that
since dwelling on the subject does my head in. I **WILL** go one
day

>I have the new album too, are you speaking about track 4??

Yes, it sounds like it has an excerpt of Electric Counterpoint, the
Reich piece composed for/performed by Pat Metheny - a deeply 'techno'
composition for those that haven't heard it - also a wonderful
creation that I'd recommend to anyone.

BTW, I also got sent an electro record by EMS (on Satamile), it said
in the press release that he builds all his own synthesisers etc from
the transistor up!

***EMS is New York's Stephen Machnowski. Yes, he does build his own
gear (check http://electromusic.com). I'm based in Halifax Nova
Scotia Canada and, because of Stephen's international reputation for
building and
modding, I sent my 606 all the way to New York to him to rework about 5 or 6
years ago.
Stephen's work is equivalent to the work done by the Devilfish crew
in Australia (http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/) who were known
back in the day for modding Richie Hawtin's 303s. Hope this helps.
Take care. Andrew Duke

I was quite impressed by this, but couldn't really
detect any noticeable difference in the music itself.

Does anyone know anyone else who does this? The only person I could
think of is Aphex.

The Role of Monolake at Ableton

Ableton has been founded by former monolake member and software
developper Gerhard Behles,
developper Bernd Roggendorf, finance expert Jan Bohl and still and
forever monolake Robert Henke.
Henke is part of the conceptual team at Ableton, which is responsible
for all decissions about the behaviour
and feel of the software. This includes everything from the very basic
concepts and functionality down to
details of the user interface and audio processing. Henke is also the
creator of most effect plug ins in
Live. Some personal favorites are the "GrainDelay", "EQ Three", "Chorus"
and "Resonators".

Now there's someone with a different sound - I can well believe that
Robert Henke originates his own software

Was greatly looking forward to the UK dates planned for earlier this
year but apparently they were called off because he's suffered long
term hearing damage - v. sad.

2004-05-19 Thread FRED giannelli
Well, I actually do build my own filter boxes (2 types) and Ring Modulators.
I've even sold many of them to name dj's/techno producers.

I also put together the MOTM kits which I've built a rack of. However,
building is much easier than designing and building in hardware.

Building stuff in Max/Reaktor/Nord Modular is even easier... ; )

he's been using Roland R-8 a lot in his earlier works.. and i think the
digeridoo sound on 'digeridoo' is from some roland analogue gear too.

I think this is all mostly legend.

Somewhere along the line, "we build our own stuff" turned into "we build
our own stuff using nothing but pieces of cardboard, chewing gum, and
divine intervention" as opposed to the much more likely "we build our

There's no mention of the sample on the sleeve notes, and my guess is
that most techno/house samples are not cleared. I'm not sure why but
I think that they just don't come under the same scrutiny as hip hop
- possibly because hip hop is a much higher turnover industry, hence
providing a financial justification for getting the lawyers on the
case.

Funny really though because house/techno is just as sample reliant as
hip hop in many ways, I suppose it's just more disguised in many
cases. I seem to remember a recent thread talking about samples used
by Mills. This surprised me, I assumed that all his stuff was built
up from sine waves or what have you.

Some samples are massively plundered e.g. Rare Pleasure - 'Let Me
Down Easy', or Isaac Hayes 'I Can't Turn Around' spring to mind...

I admit, there's a huge difference between, for example, Dave Clarke and

But, really, is it worth it?

Clever sample heads disguise their samples too well anyway.

Yes, it sounds like it has an excerpt of Electric Counterpoint, the
Reich piece composed for/performed by Pat Metheny - a deeply 'techno'
composition for those that haven't heard it - also a wonderful
creation that I'd recommend to anyone.

Talking of Steve Reich samples, I re-discovered Ghost, on the b-side of
Pepe Bradock's 6 Million Pintades at the weekend, which has a whopping
great sample of Reich's City Life providing the chords. Dan Bell used
it at the end of his last Button-down Mind mix on Logistic...

And talking of Dan Bell, his website has just had a facelift:

But by disguising your samples, you end up with entirely new sounds -
valid, but not referential. If the goal of using the sample in the
first place was to BE referential, then mangling it will lose the point.

This is why if I want acoustic samples, I usually take them from my own
acoustic music, or music that's deeply in the public domain. I swiped
Brahms for a track on my next album, for example.

I suppose I could get sued by the performers who made the original
recording

Check his label "Light and Dark" for some really deep stuff, also an early
doublepack on Blueprint (09??) was excellent.
Some pretty dense techno there, but with infinite more substance than a
lopped banger.
Take a look at his label Chango for some slower, funked out stuff.

I have the new album too, are you speaking about track 4??

I've seen him work 3 tables efficiently, and he definitely holds a
presence behind the decks that is almost spiritual. He sways away from
the "hits", and focuses more on the raw emotive journey.

A very special treat all around, especially if you want to experience
something a bit different. Highly recommended for his talent alone.

London groovetech has some archives from the past of his... which is
quite nice on the experimental side of things.

i'm glad i went out to see mr. ho... well worth my hangover this morning!
dope dj. very diverse set. played some nice old school house to kick things
off then went into some deep tribal house. after a bit of that he played a
few "micro-house" grooves and then went into some deep ass techno. couldn't
stop dancing... was very refreshing to see a dj play more than one genre in
a set!

also had a little chat with him, v. nice guy.

thanks for all of those that responded.

I saw Surgeon and Ruskin last night. I think the assessments thrown up on
this list were very accurate. Now I know why the Surgeon is called that - he
is very clinical. His technique was OK, it just lacked the funk or any
feeling. Ruskin was great - very funky. He is very versatile technically and
had a good selection of tracks. He played Mills, Ho, etc. I was very
impressed. Catch this guy if he comes to a town near you.

Overload Magazine (a UK Techno magazine) version 2.0 (May 2000) has a
two-page interview with Oliver Ho which is rather good. This magazine
can be obtained for free (ie only shipping costs) from Juno Records
(www.juno.co.uk), and there should be even more info about Ho (and many
others techno musicians) at Overload's web site - www.overloadmedia.co.uk.

This months DJ magazine has a UK Techno special, which features some
information as well as an interview with Oliver Ho, as well as Dave Clarke,
Regis, Surgeon, Steve Bicknell, and some others, although I can't really
remember who exactly. The article is surprisingly decent considering its in
DJ, the guy who wrote it almost apologizes for having it published in a major
magazine, which I found amusing. One of the questions that was asked to all
the people who were interviewed was something like "what is your relationship

Re: [313] Oliver Ho (and Blueprint and Surface...)

2000-09-14 Thread Nuutti-Iivari Meriläinen

Just about a week back I wrote an extensive piece to the list on Surgeon
& Ruskin with some information on Ho and the Blueprint, Surface and Meta
labels. I think I'll reiterate, with discographies. Just to get some facts
straight.

Meta is Oliver Ho's own label, with nine 12" releases, one 2x12" and one
full-length. Ho's style is tribal-influenced, hypnotic, rhythm-based
techno with chopped up vocal and tribal chant samples woven in the
polyrythmics of his tracks.

Ho also started a label called Light & Dark a while back, with just one
release out this far, a rather twisted two track EP with long tracks
switching to dark and moody ambience at the middle after some serious
techno. The one that I like the least is the release on Drumcode, but then
again, that was countered by Ho as Life on Cosmic ID, more of his
trademark tribal techno.

META1 Oliver Ho - ``Chapter 1'' (12")
META2 Oliver Ho - ``Terra Incognita'' (12")
META3 Max Duley - ``Watch As We Now Drift'' (12")
META4 Oliver Ho - ``Metaphor'' (12")
META5 Oliver Ho - ``Rituals'' (12")
META6 Oliver Ho - ``Prima Materia'' (2x12")
META7 Oliver Ho - ``Evolution'' (12")
META8 Oliver Ho - ``Metaphysical'' (12")
META9 Oliver Ho - ``Nightlife'' (12")
META10 Oliver Ho and James Ruskin - ``Mutate and Survive'' (12")
METALP/CD1 Oliver Ho - ``Listen To The Voice Inside'' (2xLP/CD)
(CD has seven exclusive tracks, vinyl three)

LD001 Oliver Ho - ``Light and Dark Part One'' (12")
DC08Oliver Ho - ``Chasm EP'' (12")
COSID002Life - ``Now EP'' (12")

Max Duley is Oliver Ho's flatmate in London, a very nice bloke who runs
his own label, Arcane, with two releases out this far.

The Surface label is run by Richard Polson and Nick Dunton. The label
has seen eleven releases this far, most of them by Ho, James Ruskin and
Polson himself, with a Claude Young EP thrown in for good measure. The
style is quite similar to Meta releases, but with a distinctive touch that
sets the two labels apart.

SURFACE1Oliver Ho - ``The First'' (12")
SURFACE2Lysander Pearson - ``Displacement'' (12")
SURFACE3Oliver Ho - ``Film'' (12")
SURFACE4Polson & Ruskin - ``Institute For The Future EP'' (12")
SURFACE5Claude Young presents Twine - ``Scarred EP'' (12")
SURFACE6Oliver Ho - ``Becoming Inanimate EP'' (12")
SURFACE7Richard Polson - ``Episode EP'' (12")
SURFACE8Structure (Polson) - ``The Black Smoke'' (12")
SURFACE9Abelde (Polson & Dunton) - ``EP'' (12")
SURFACE10 Oliver Ho - ``Dream Your Life'' (12")
SURFACE11 Various (Polson & Dunton) - ``Out-Takes'' (12")

Blueprint is James Ruskin's label, which definitely belongs in the same
category with Ho's Meta and Polson & Dunton's Surface: sometimes hard,
sometimes spacey, sometimes tribal and sometimes just that british techno
sound that I love so much. Outline is Ruskin himself, sometimes assisted
by Richard Polson.

BP01Outline - ``First Contact'' (12")
BP02Oliver Ho - ``The Gathering'' (12")
BP03Outline - ``Examined Life EP'' (12")
BP04James Ruskin - (untitled blue label, very ltd/ed)
BP05James Ruskin - (no title)
BP06Oliver Ho - ``Cosmetics'' (12")
BP07Outline meets Surgeon (12")
BP08James Ruskin - ``Transition'' (12")
BP09Oliver Ho - ``Reincarnation'' (2x12")
BP10James Ruskin - ``Prelude'' (12")
BP11Oliver Ho - ``Entering The Plural'' (12")
BP12James Ruskin - ``Prevention Beyond Cause'' (12")
BP13(not issued, brits are superstitious :)
BP14Oliver Ho - ``Awakening The Sentient'' (12")
BP15James Ruskin - ``Divide Part Two''/
Oliver Ho - ``Tides (Unreleased Mix)''
BP16James Ruskin - ``Cipher'' (12")
BPCD001 Oliver Ho - ``Duality'' (BP09 CD version w/extra tracks)
BPLP/CD01 James Ruskin - ``Further Design'' (2xLP/CD)
BPLP/CD02 Oliver Ho - ``Sentience'' (2xLP/CD)
BPCOMP1 Various - ``Encounters'' (compilation w/some unreleased)

Of course there are the two recent Ruskin offerings not on meta as well:

TRESOR145/CDJames Ruskin - ``Point 2'' (2xLP/CD)
CODA1 James Ruskin - ``The Definition Of EP'' (12")

I've been planning to put this information up on the web for some time
(with track listings, cross-references etc.), but I just haven't found the
time. I spent copious amounts of money and time to hunt down the above
labels' releases, so I have done my homework on them.

The above is not much more than a couple of discographies, but that
should get anyone started on locating them. I had a hard time finding out
what was what - I had help from a couple of very knowledgeable and
close-to-the-source people. But there you go.

If you have any questions on the above, j

Hmm, I'm very curious now...

Oliver played at our New Year's party in Kalamazoo, was SUPER tight on 3
decks and sounded really great. I had a chance to meet him and he was also
a very nice guy, with some intriguing ideas about art. Unfortunately, the
crowd at this event was a little more "ravey" than we had hoped for, and I
think Mr. Ho's rather dark set may have scared the candy ravers! That was
my impression anyway; but I hope he does come to Michigan again and I
definitely would recommend checking him out if he does.

I will be honest, I thought this album was the bee knee's when it was
new. In hindsight, I cannot believe I ever liked the stuff(then again I
feel that way about just about everthing in the downwards catalogue
now.) Bangin' hard monotrack techno from the mid-90's, considered
brilliant in its day.

If you like monotrack techno it is good stuff, if you like your records
to have musical developments and phrases that last longer than a bar or
two, you might not care for this record. In my eyes, it is pretty
souless and disposable, but that is _my_ opinion.

If you did not live on the other side of the planet I would give my copy
to you(along with all the other regis, early surgeon, female, and
portion reform that is gathering dust in my collection)

David J. Wirethen last weeks "Public Information Film" by Regis...also
labeled Lino 24 on the outside, and on the 7" Lino 2a on both w/ a more
industrial noise approach..

so what gives..these just collectors items, or some pre-release hoop-la to
something big? Anyone hear anything on this or happen to own some whites
of something BIGGER to come like an album?

I just got a hold of the EP on Sequential. Hot, very tribal, I'm diggin' it.

Also got a copy of Karl O'Connor/Peter Sutton album on Tresor. A couple of
good tracks on it, but by and large this is the kind of stuff people refer to
when they say they don't like techno.

(313) Oliver Ho: Light and Dark

2000-02-03 Thread Michael Adamczyk

I just picked up Light and Dark by Oliver Ho: Wow! Deep, hard and
minimal. He combines hard minimal riffs with eerie dark ambience. The
background ambience reminds me very much of Coil. Both tracks can be
pitched down and incorporated into a down-tempo deep techno mix. Great
stuff kids.
