Hmm, I'm very curious now... Oliver played at our New Year's party in Kalamazoo, was SUPER tight on 3 decks and sounded really great. I had a chance to meet him and he was also a very nice guy, with some intriguing ideas about art. Unfortunately, the crowd at this event was a little more "ravey" than we had hoped for, and I think Mr. Ho's rather dark set may have scared the candy ravers! That was my impression anyway; but I hope he does come to Michigan again and I definitely would recommend checking him out if he does. Ho's still around. He recently played a night called Alcatraz in Liverpool. I didn't go cos I was out of town, but I heard his set was amazing. I think he's still in LA. Last bit of tunes I got through of his was an original CD set from 2 WMCs ago. Def a good CD. It's been an afterparty favourite at my house quite a bit. I'm such a fan, I've even got a Ho T-shirt. lol. Ho's music has a real sense of history embedded in its grooves, like a lot of the best Detroit techno. Some real mental energy & spirit to complement the sensuality of the rhythms. That inner track flowing on from the Pure mix of "Magick" (Meta 19) always slays me with its sampled voiceover: "I go with my feelings, you know, I love music...the only thing that makes me play & continue (in) this business is my love for music." I've seen him work 3 tables efficiently, and he definitely holds a presence behind the decks that is almost spiritual. He sways away from the "hits", and focuses more on the raw emotive journey. A very special treat all around, especially if you want to experience something a bit different. Highly recommended for his talent alone. I just picked up Light and Dark by Oliver Ho: Wow! Deep, hard and minimal. He combines hard minimal riffs with eerie dark ambience. The background ambience reminds me very much of Coil. Both tracks can be pitched down and incorporated into a down-tempo deep techno mix. Great stuff kids. Mike A.

I saw Surgeon and Ruskin last night. I think the assessments thrown up on this list were very accurate. Now I know why the Surgeon is called that - he is very clinical. His technique was OK, it just lacked the funk or any feeling. Ruskin was great - very funky. He is very versatile technically and had a good selection of tracks. He played Mills, Ho, etc. I was very impressed. Catch this guy if he comes to a town near you.

In hindsight, I cannot believe I ever liked the stuff(then again I feel that way about just about everthing in the downwards catalogue now.) Bangin' hard monotrack techno from the mid-90's, considered brilliant in its day. If you like monotrack techno it is good stuff, if you like your records to have musical developments and phrases that last longer than a bar or two, you might not care for this record. In my eyes, it is pretty souless and disposable, but that is _my_ opinion. Just about a week back I wrote an extensive piece to the list on Surgeon & Ruskin with some information on Ho and the Blueprint, Surface and Meta labels. I think I'll reiterate, with discographies. Just to get some facts straight. Meta is Oliver Ho's own label, with nine 12" releases, one 2x12" and one full-length. Ho's style is tribal-influenced, hypnotic, rhythm-based techno with chopped up vocal and tribal chant samples woven in the polyrythmics of his tracks. So far there are two Lino 24s on 7" (a bit confusing)...One is "An Introduction to the Workplace" which is just a 7" full of metal shop noises by K. Bennett and David J. Wirethen last weeks "Public Information Film" by Regis...also labeled Lino 24 on the outside, and on the 7" Lino 2a on both w/ a more industrial noise approach.. so what gives..these just collectors items, or some pre-release hoop-la to something big? Anyone hear anything on this or happen to own some whites of something BIGGER to come like an album? Check his label "Light and Dark" for some really deep stuff, also an early doublepack on Blueprint (09??) was excellent. Some pretty dense techno there, but with infinite more substance than a lopped banger. Take a look at his label Chango for some slower, funked out stuff. I really like OH production and seeing him live at Split last Feb really brought this home for me. He seems to have gone up a level and I really admire the way he attacks his work.. This is why if I want acoustic samples, I usually take them from my own acoustic music, or music that's deeply in the public domain. I swiped Brahms for a track on my next album, for example. Yes, it sounds like it has an excerpt of Electric Counterpoint, the Reich piece composed for/performed by Pat Metheny - a deeply 'techno' composition for those that haven't heard it - also a wonderful creation that I'd recommend to anyone. BTW, I also got sent an electro record by EMS (on Satamile), it said in the press release that he builds all his own synthesisers etc from the transistor up! I was quite impressed by this, but couldn't really detect any noticeable difference in the music itself. Does anyone know anyone else who does this? The only person I could think of is Aphex.

There's no mention of the sample on the sleeve notes, and my guess is that most techno/house samples are not cleared. I'm not sure why but I think that they just don't come under the same scrutiny as hip hop - possibly because hip hop is a much higher turnover industry, hence providing a financial justification for getting the lawyers on the case. Funny really though because house/techno is just as sample reliant as hip hop in many ways, I suppose it's just more disguised in many cases. I seem to remember a recent thread talking about samples used by Mills. This surprised me, I assumed that all his stuff was built up from sine waves or what have you. Some samples are massively plundered e.g. Rare Pleasure - 'Let Me Down Easy', or Isaac Hayes 'I Can't Turn Around' spring to mind... Well, I actually do build my own filter boxes (2 types) and Ring Modulators. I've even sold many of them to name dj's/techno producers. I also put together the MOTM kits which I've built a rack of. However, building is much easier than designing and building in hardware.
