(313) Mike Grant mixes- back in the day
Hey Ho- don't know where else these are available but we've got a really nice slice of Detroit history for sale at the moment courtesy of Mr Mike Grant and although I often don't post about items we're specifically selling in case it's a conflict of interest, I doubt there's a 313 list subscriber that wouldn't be interested in hearing these: "These are direct from Mike Grant himself and they are uber limited!! This mix CD is taken from a tape of Mike Grant spinning at the University of Detroit in 1985. Part 2 has some freestyle from John Rocca plus early Model 500 and heaps of 80's electro. Read on for a few words from Mike himself. "I just finished some mixed CDs which are a little "special" in that they are reflective of the climate of Detroit around 1985. Two are from cassettes recorded at The University of Detroit right before I went into the Army" "As it was 45 mins a side I looked to do something different and added some dialogue to fill the empty space and setup the mix. The other two mixes are reflective of the different classes we associated ourselves with back then: Jits (from the East side, a little rougher stuff like Egyptian Lover, Model 500, some LA techno-hop, Twilight 22, and some Miami freestyle) and Preps (from the West side, more alternative, New Order, Viscous Pink, Ian Dury, The Pet Shop Boys, and The Clash." "As I was recording old cassettes I thought It'd be cool to present a live look at one of the parties from back in the day. The U of D gig was one I did before leaving for the U.S. Army in 1985. I was near the top of the DJ pyramid at the time being a member of WJLB's Street Beat mix show but had already made the commitment. I also thought back on how the city seemed divided East and West by Woodward Ave. In high school then you were normal or associated yourself with the preppy or jit crowd. Preps were into fashion and jits seemed to be into trouble. Each had a different type of music associated with it (progressive or urban). As there is a fascination with Detroit's history this is just a taste of what can be found in my archives, look for more of the past in the future..." http://rubadub.co.uk/?node_id=1.3&id=24783 These CD's are realy.excellent - I enjoyed hearing music that I knew from that period and being assured that it was also influencing the guys in Detroit that would go on to influence me (and countless others) in their music making journeys. cheers Jason

>Ken said: "...many djs imo are still bizarrely dipping into what >seems to me the majority of releases which are weaker, from the areas we >like..." > >This comment intrigued me, could you elaborate on this?? >/Dave Hi, Nothing too deep. Just consider this. On this list this year (already) there have been some records which have been recommended. Most of the time, if one happens to pick one of this tips up, they turn out to be at least interesting and sometimes, downright *amazing*! And they're across the map - I mean, not necessarily in one particular sub-genre. Yet despite this, how often have you gone out and not only have you *not* heard any these obviously available tracks, but instead have heard ones which whilst you don't know their origin, you wish you hadn't become aquainted with them at all! We're all guilty of 'obscuritis' at times I admit: the tendency to favour that which is barely known outside a very small circle of devotees. Perhaps there is a touch of this going on, with some dj's selections. It's when perfectly good, but relatively well-known stuff (which is ironic considering that 'relatively well-known' in our sphere of interest is still damn obscure from a wider perspective, but hey ...) is eschewed for lesser known but (sometimes) bloody naff alternatives (I wonder if English curses are let through?! ;-). This doesn't apply to all disc players, but everyone will be afflicted at sometime it seems. As I say, I admit, this could just be my subjective opinion and I'm getting ancient too ;-) (by some people's standards) but it seems to me that the above is too often the case, though not always, of course. And I don't want to make too much of this either - I mean, to a large extent, who cares? The above gripe is one of the reasons why we organize our own events isn't it?! Peace k

Yes, I especially like the Isolee Pyjama Mix. yeah M & G always seems relatively quiet with their PR for releases... mike's releases are always so damn solid! i don't think i've ever heard a track of his and thought 'well that was some ripe old lazy piece of S*&T' m.

Re: (313) mike grant
I second this and I believe this young Detroit label, Moods & Grooves Records really worth to be known with already 6 releases. My fav MG004 Rick Wade "quantum Expression " and MG0003 Brian Harden with his Nubirth Project: smooth groove, jazzy solo. I had the chance to hear the two next releases, during the NYE: -MG005: Kenny Dixon Junior 2 tracks, the first one is more tribal (my fav) I bet for an hit about the second track. -MG006 yes from G.Flame & Mr. G , the B1: "Pulsez" blown me away since the first time I listened it, the melody remained engraved in my head. Just wondering where the orginal sample of *Music is Hypnotizing* originally came from. I think it had something to do with that 80's electro-groove movement. Eddie F Fowlkes also sampled that on his tresor album Black Techno Soul. A_Zed

I have to agree wholeheartedly, this is one of my favourite house records purely because 'Sunlight' is so incredible. Deep emotional synths forceful subterannean bass sounds... i had a melodramatic review of it up on http://dissonance.space.net.au/ but the past issues are temporarily down. I'll let you know when they are back up. The next issue to go up has a full interview and feature on mike grant and we talk a little about this track. Definitely buy it if you can... josh The track "Sunshine" off that record is fantastic. It's the only one I play, but it alone is worth buying the 12" for. It's deep, very bassy...and has gorgeous synth washes that come in after a brief intro. Highly recommended. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: (313) mike grant
greetings, I am going to have to second what BVL has to say. I do not particlularly care for the a-side, it is a bit housey, good, but nothing really amazing. However, the B-side is off the hook. I am going to have to put my foot down and say that that "Rest in Peace My Brother" is my favorite cut off this record. It is a non-four on the floor track, that reminds me in a way of a primitive Psyche/BFC era Carl Craig with rhymic elements that remind me of the Mood EP by MonoJunk. This is very much a "current" track. I remember Mike telling me about a friend of his being shot in the studio during a robbery, perhaps this is some reference to that incident. The A2, Sunlight, is an increbible track as well. It is not quite as moody as "Rest" but it is a floor track. Its a smooth 808 kick, with a simple bassline, with percussion elements that are very reminescent of the Mood EP on Plug Research. The strings on this track make it, along with these abstract lead lines that work very well. It is a deep soulful techno track, this is what people _should_ think of when you say techno. Bill is right, this record is fantastic, I highly reccomend it. I just wish that the Moods and Grooves records were more in this vein rather than on the Detroit House tip. Either way, this is a label worth looking into, and I reccomend their records highly. Take care, Mike Taylor William VanLoo wrote: > > The track "Sunshine" off that record is fantastic.
