I see on the Axis site that he also has another album out, "The
Occurrence", which sounds very fun.

Hopefully, I'll be able to pick up one or both of them in a few weeks
while I'm in Detroit.

hypnotic ticking Hi Hats (why is it when I do a straight 16's Closed

hypnotic) and spaced out chords floating about all over the place.

I forgot to mention, in an attempt to out do Anya at Bleep 43, Rubadub
have Jeff Mills playing here in at the Sub Club in Glasgow on my 40th
(July 23rd if you want to send flowers, cards etc) - the venue holds
about 300-400 people and he rarely gets a chance to play in such
intimate surroundings here so we're looking forward to it. He's
promised to do something pretty special (juggling, kniting??) and is
playing for three hours . The only downside is that as it's a
Significant Birthday for me it's unlikely I'll be able to remember a

The first batch of tickets sold out in three days but there will be a
second batch at the start of July and a small amount kept by on the

As well as my birthday, it's Rubadub's 18th birthday too (Legal to

Well I have the tracks on the 9 7" records collection and they are good

I guess some of these 7" are still available on the axis shop on the

also, as my last post on this, and not to attack or argue with tim, as an
"artist" myself, I think people can carry the "artistic integrity" thing too
far.

just because music = art and art = endless subjectivity, does not mean that
people involved in music and conceptualization cannot disappear up their own

I knew this whole conversation would degrade to something like this... Well,
either this or something racial (thankfully, it hasn't gone there... Yet).

Bottom line here:

Mills is nice with his and he has a new release. Some will buy it, others
will not. Some like him, others do not. Does anything else really matter?

2004-04-08 Thread Stewart Caig
This whole issue with conceptual records seems so old to me. I mean look at
all the UR stuff, Code Breaker, The Dark Energy EPs, the WPA records, Red
Planet, Drexciya. Even a lot of the old Mills UR stuff like Seawolf. Its all
conceptual to a point. Its not like this is something new Mills is doing.
Ok, he may be taking it to new levels, but some of his most conceptual stuff
has been cool. The Metropolis project, the Rings of Saturn thing. So does
the concept behind these records make the music any better in the moment of
listenjng or dancing to them? Maybe not, but some of the concepts are pretty
damn cool. I certainly think the idea of a race of underwater Drexciyans
adds a certain colour to that particular catalogue of music and I personally
dig it. If Mills has serious artistic aspirations for this music then let
him have them, hes not the only one doing it and I dont see anyone slagging
off Richie for the whole Plastikman thing...then again...oh no
what have I started now!!!

It was for yussel, but I don't think I need to argue about this
anymore, because we each have our own opinions...
But I will read a NoU CD booklet, and my point will still stand
that mills is not a lightweight. And I won't call NoU lightweights
either because I respect what each artist does.

their concepts are more valid than Jeff Mills' concepts so Jeff, if you're

RE: (313) new Mills

2004-04-08 Thread Steward, Tim
There is no way you can say mills is a lightweight,
Music production is an art, and art is a form of expression
if you choose not to buy it that's your choice, but call
him a lightweight when he is a true artist..It appears to me
that he is able to continually re-create himself and capture
his audience. If you take a look around the industry there are
many people that copy the things he does, for example
without naming names - who just recently copied his See The Light
idea...and who will copy the dvd concept next..
The art of DJing is not easy we all know, but the art of music
production is not easy either (believe me) In order for the techno
(electro, house, jungle, trance etc...) scene to survive more people
have to constantly step out on the edge and try to re-create themselves.

If, say, Phillip Glass, Sun Ra, Holger Czukay, or Brian Eno were to say the
same thing as Mills is we'd all be going "hmmm, yes, very interesting
concept"
but we're not because Jeff Mills is *supposed* to make dance music and "it
just ain't right" for him to conceptualize or attempt to put some thought
(even if it's half baked) into his art. That's what it is - his art. And
yes, it's mass produced for consumers but so are Rembrant's, Warhol's, and
Rothko's.
He's crossing pop culture with ideas of high art - he's not the first to do
this so I'm not sure why everyone gets so upset when he presents a concept.

At least he's not saying "dude I put it on marble green vinyl because it
looks so f*cking rad man!"

He's also not gluing sandpaper to the vinyl so you can still play it - he's
trying to put some thought and effort into it while still presenting a
usable product- you can't blame a man for trying something.

Sorry to pile in here...philosophy background coming into play ;-)

"Mills chose the symbolic colour of white as the vinyl colour in the design
to represent an unknown destination in space and/or time"

This is actually justified conceptually by thinking about a situation where
you are in space which is completely white - no other information is being
received by you. You therefore have no sense of change in your environment
other than your inner sense of space and/or time, and so in an limited
sense
these things cease to exist.

Philosophically I call this a 'white room' scenario, actually a very
interesting situation which highlights certain things about how we perceive
and know anything at all.

So there!

Peace,

Andrew

once again, white is not a colour...white is no colour, black is all. thats the
point i think of blue room vs white room

well, your statement seemed to be backing the argument that the colour white
was used for a special reason - but i was saying that based on your argument
this couldn't be true, as you seem to now agree; the uniformity of white is
no different from the uniformity of any other colour.

This one has, but the whole intention beside the point he makes i think of
Mills is to make us think about music in a different way, which is a good
thing. The point may be somewhat pretentiously put, but without discussion its

We are now verging on the 313 equivalent of debating the number of angels
it's possible to fit on the tip of a pinhead!

Let's all step back and ask ourselves whether we are acting with enough
perspective. I.e. in the bigger scheme of things, are these matters really
that important? I mean, discuss it yeah, beat an already dead horse and then
when you're done with that, beat up each other verbally, is not the best

Just to offer a positive alternative: has anyone got a tracklisting of the

Sorry to pile in here...philosophy background coming into play ;-)

"Mills chose the symbolic colour of white as the vinyl colour in the
design
to represent an unknown destination in space and/or time"

This is actually justified conceptually by thinking about a situation
where
you are in space which is completely white - no other information is being
received by you. You therefore have no sense of change in your environment
other than your inner sense of space and/or time, and so in an limited
sense
  these things cease to exist.

you would also have no sense of change, and no other information if the room
was completely black or blue or green or yellow or red or orange.

this is not philosophy.

"Mills chose the symbolic colour of white as the vinyl colour in the design
to represent an unknown destination in space and/or time"

This is actually justified conceptually by thinking about a situation where
you are in space which is completely white - no other information is being
received by you. You therefore have no sense of change in your environment
other than your inner sense of space and/or time, and so in an limited sense
these things cease to exist.

Philosophically I call this a 'white room' scenario, actually a very
interesting situation which highlights certain things about how we perceive
and know anything at all.

So there!

Andrew

RE: (313) new Mills

2004-04-08 Thread Andrew
I didn't think my explanation was particularly high-falutin!

Perhaps his execution isn't as precise as might be, but I personally don't
mind when any artists tries to articulate their motivation in a concept. Do
we here this kind of slagging off about Sun Ra or John Coltrane?

For me there is an element of intellectual dumbing-down in the club end of
electronic music, and artists like Jeff or UR or Drexciya or Dopplereffekt
or use concepts to deliver the
music on a different - not higher! - level. And I like it!

And I don't believe there's any such thing as 'just' a record, each one is,
or should be, special. They deserve all the love, care, thought and
attention as any other work of art.

Although I wouldn't want the music to turn into an aural equivalent of Tate
Modern, with little explanations on the sleeves to 'tell' you what you're
listening to, like a lot of avant-garde electronics. Even still, no amount
of explanation can make a whack track a fat track.

And Jeff continually makes fat tracks. Nuff said.

Peace,

Andrew

Right, right, I see...it's "diss Mills time" again!!
At the end of the day, take it or leave it. If that's how HE chooses to do
things, and you don't get it, then don't worry about it!!
Take from it what you want.
At the end of the day, the concepts don't sell the records to me, at all -
but I certainly wouldn't attempt to belittle the ideas by imposing my
opinion on others.

Better than conceptualising about drug monkeys in a nightclub anyway -
because that is just not challenging, in the slightest.

Sorry to pile in here...philosophy background coming into play ;-)

"Mills chose the symbolic colour of white as the vinyl colour in the design
to represent an unknown destination in space and/or time"

This is actually justified conceptually by thinking about a situation where
you are in space which is completely white - no other information is being
received by you. You therefore have no sense of change in your environment
other than your inner sense of space and/or time, and so in an limited sense
these things cease to exist.

Philosophically I call this a 'white room' scenario, actually a very
interesting situation which highlights certain things about how we perceive
and know anything at all.

So there!

Peace,

Andrew

I like this bit as well

"Mills chose the symbolic colour of white as the vinyl colour in the design
to represent an unknown destination in space and/or time"

oh, right, I see.

didn't just fancy some posh coloured vinyl then Jeff?

alex

p.s. this is not a "I hate Jeff Mills thread" because I don't at all, I
have the upmost respect for him. But, blimey, I can't help feeling
everything he does seems to HAVE to have a concept or a reason, and, at
times it comes across like he makes it all up after he's made the music to
market it better. (to my un-cultured eyes anyway)
suppose I shouldn't poke fun at it really, but, oh well.

These are just the previously unreleased tracks.

>MILLS, JEFF: The Art of Connecting CD (NEXTERA). New compilation of Jeff
>Mills material, only released in the Czech Republic and Australia

I thought Sweden was mentioned too? Also Poland?? Don't quote me on that.

'Deckard'
>(unreleased),

This is a cool, cinematic track composed as an imaginary film score. Would
suit a time lapse photography type scenario.

'Pacific State Of Mind'
>(unreleased),

Playful and sexy - sounds like a Millsian Nude Photo! Has this girl laughing
on it.

 'UFO'
>(unreleased)

More dramatic, quite hard and driving.

I am sure 4 Art was on another compilation?
