Re: [AFMUG] OT: Home automation

2017-01-08 Thread Paul Stewart
My house used to run purely on Control4 system .. professionally installed and
quite expensive.  I got sick of $125 service calls for rather simple stuff to
be done and decided to replace it with a DYI system…. The Control4 system with
labour and service calls etc set me back around $25k in total.

Right now with the DYI system I have probably $4k invested plus my time … at
most.  Zero monthly subscription, zero headaches …. And no service calls.

The one part though that I think a lot of folks overlook (as I did) is working
with electrical in your house … I replaced outlets and switches for example and
the zwave stuff I used is much deeper than normal switches – I wish now that I
had just hired an electrician to mess around with that stuff in particular as
it’s not something I do every day kind of thing ….

I know someone in my area that does home automation for a living … done it for
years.  He is very busy … his main clients are folks who have cottages and wish
to remotely control/monitor their properties especially during times they are
not visiting it very much …

telescopes from home via Internet... Most have automation that he
troubleshoots once in a while. I have done cameras and two way radio for
several hunting ranches in Marta, Texas. The pay is good. I want to go
out after cellular boosters for them as well.

I have installed the Honeywell smart thermostats for two way radio repeater
communication rooms on Franklin mountains . Emails client when temperature
varies from his desired levels. Our summers get toasty so that is his
main concern... Ice build up on antennas does happen but not much you can
do about it safely.

2017-01-08 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller

I glanced at the website, some of the stuff looks neat. I've got a lake rental
property - it would be nice to use those particular door handles and be able to
change the codes remotely or change the temp remotely. The rest is not as cool
to me. We already use motion sensor lights, I have no desire to see my blinds
go up and down automatically depending on what time of day it is (after all the
days get longer for six months, then get shorter for six months), plus in terms
of recurring revenue, i don't see it.

Personally I think more money could be made working with an electrician and
working on alternative forms of energy - not only that does save you $$$ over
the long haul but you could setup a return visit to check on everything at
least once a year - maybe twice - and the customer pay for it out of the
savings from not having to purchase as much utility power.

I have not done it but there is a ton of money to be made with solar. I can
buy a whole grid tie system ( parts) for about $1/watt. You can sell installed
systems from $3 to $4 installed. I think you could hit a 50% net margin if you
were ambitious and wanted to grow.

I have a cheap wink at my shop. I have 4 of the commercial owners with myQ
and all the doors have Schlage, I think, door locks.

It comes in pretty handy, the person who cleans my place had a sub one
Sunday and called me to see if I could let her in. She didn't want to give
them Her code. I could see who was at the door with the camera and unlock
the door.

I'll also say that unlocking and locking the door is faster than with a
key.

Re: [AFMUG] OT in search of 400/230 VAC

2017-01-08 Thread Mark Radabaugh

I was amused at the fellow students who could tell you anything theoretical
about inductors and capacitors would be the same kids in power lab who would do
something stupid like pull a banana plug jumper off of a running DC motor and
shit themselves when the arc burned the end of the plug off.

The school had a pair of 10Hp (maybe bigger) motor generator sets along with
all the controls to allow you to synchronize and parallel the gensets. So for
a class we are doing exactly that. Get done and the professor wants us to
decouple them. “Just turn that knob there so that the power factor is back to
0 first”. Student looks at the professor weird and the professor says it
again so he starts cranking the power factor toward 0. Then it got real noisy
with some interesting oscillation noises - thought both gensets were coming off
the stands. “Wait, Wait - I meant 1, not 0”.

Memorable if nothing else...

Yup re: doors … I did that with a rental years back … every week different code
and could monitor the property when it wasn’t rented as well including a camera
in the common area (living room/dining room) which everyone who stayed there
was fully aware of but my intention was more for security when nobody there …
had it tied into an Elk alarm system as well (which are awesome alarm systems)

I guess I have a DumbHome.

And oddly, the things I might want to check remotely don’t seem to be on the
list. Like did someone leave the bathroom faucet running or a burner on the
stove lit. With LED lights I don’t obsess that a light might be left on for 8
hours. And I don’t need my fridge ordering more eggs from Amazon.

The worst DIY home automation item has to be these Ring Doorbells. For the
time people spend dealing with their bugs, they could just hire someone to
house sit and call them when someone is at the door.

Now if I could just get the dog to bring in my wife’s paper in the morning.

[AFMUG] OT - is the music CD dead?

2017-01-08 Thread Ken Hohhof
Those of you outside the US or with friends and relatives there, is this
just a US thing, that all music is either in the cloud and streamed, or
electronically downloaded to an iPhone/iPod like device?

Amazon pretty much killed off the brick-and-mortar record stores, but now I
find that even Amazon doesn't seem too interested in carrying CDs. They may
have recent releases, but otherwise what you get is other sellers on the
Amazon storefront. And these other sellers are predominantly in the UK,
followed by Japan and Germany. Which leads me to believe people in those
countries still buy CDs, maybe at actual record stores. So is this a
cultural difference? Or is the trend just hitting Europe and Japan a little
later than here?

One thing I miss are the EP singles, not the 2 songs on 7 inch vinyl, more
like 4-5 songs on a CD. Often these were exclusive for Borders or Barnes &
Noble, or sent out to record stores to promote an upcoming album. Often
they had bonus tracks or live performances that never made it to the albums.
I still see a few of these for Barnes & Noble but from sellers in the UK,
leading me to believe that even Barnes & Noble sells more music at their UK
stores than here.

How long before physical media for content distribution is totally dead?
Already pretty much true for software and games, plus software seems to be
going to the subscription model (like Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud).
I suspect music CDs may not be long for this world, even though vinyl has
made a comeback - how strange. Will they stop releasing movies on Blu-Ray?
Will they work out DRM so you can buy movies via electronic download, or
will all video be streamed from the cloud?

Maybe what I'm missing is that most people today are never without their
phones, so that's the only logical place to have their music. I'm probably
a dinosaur, sticking a CD in the stereo, or grabbing a handful to play in
the car.

Power factor of zero... fun.

I am still pissed off at a teaching assistant that marked an exam answer as
wrong (only one wrong on that exam).

The question: What is Power Factor. My answer: The cosine of the phase
angle.

I was right then, I am still right. 30+ years has not changed anything.

Closest I had was “Electromechanical Devices” but nicknamed “Motors”. The
professor with the least seniority got stuck with teaching “Motors Lab”. After
the year I took it, they eliminated it as a required course, along with
Drafting. (No, not AutoCAD, the pencil and paper version.) They had
eliminated Surveying as a required course the year before me.

The guy I had for Motors Lab really, really didn’t want to be there. His
answer to any question was “Let’s find out.” Student asks, what happens if you
open the field coil on a motor? Let’s find out! Student asks what happens if
you throw a dead short across the output of the generator in a motor-generator
pair? Let’s find out! That’s also where I was introduced to the water
rheostat as a dummy load.

I suspect Chuck would have volunteered to teach Motors Lab. But still “Let’s
find out!” And wearing a lab coat. And safety goggles.

It may be dead, but then it might come back too; just like vinyl. OTOH,
maybe we are finding we want "music", but we don't really want to
"listen". People with good ears can tell the difference between MP3, CD,
hi-res audio (24-bit and/or flac), and vinyl. I can sometimes tell the
difference, but most of the time I'm not concentrating on the music.
Most of the time, I'm just looking for the mood.

I also wonder about home theater sound. People have the 60 and 70 inch
screens, maybe they have a Dolby or DTS 5.1/6.1/7.1 capable sound system,
but do any of the streaming services deliver the audio to drive those? Or
is it just stereo, I think so. But nobody seems to care enough to watch it
on Blu-Ray.

Apollo 13 was on TV today. Great movie, never get tired of watching it.
But I’d like to watch it with Dolby HD sound. Maybe I can go to Chuck’s
house, I seem to remember he has an actual Home Theater, like Howard Hughes.

Oh, and have you been reading the reviews from CES of the superthin OLED TV

What I don't get is why they are still trying to extract a premium for
Blu-Ray versus standard DVD. The players don't really cost any more, and
I'm betting that the media doesn't really cost any more; especially if
they only made Blu-Ray. Maybe physical media started dying before
Blu-Ray took hold, and now they expect that we will just stream everything.

Unifi also works well for me.

I saw similar problems with the 844E here. It didn't cover my house well
when in the basement. I had to move it to a more central location and even
then had hiccups with DLNA streaming on 5ghz. I wasn't running the latest
firmware, I've been meaning to try it again.

All because I'm too lazy to run coax to my bedroom...

Apollo 13 was on TV today. Great movie, never get tired of watching it. But
I’d like to watch it with Dolby HD sound. Maybe I can go to Chuck’s house, I
seem to remember he has an actual Home Theater, like Howard Hughes.

Oh, and have you been reading the reviews from CES of the superthin OLED TV
screens with the electronics in a separate box?

With 5GHz, many of you are going to need to get used to running RF power on
low or medium inside your homes. :/

Lower power, more APs.

At least, if you care about throughput and coverage.

BTW, there's been several very positive shootouts between eero, google, and
amplifi lately... UBNT has been doing quite well. I may have to check that
line out just to see what the fuss is. I know they've trademarked some cool
names lately.

In fact, on Sunday nights from 9 until midnight it is ALL live music...

Right now it's "British Music Rocks". If you're bored check it out. "WRJM"

The skill in recording, mixing and mastering the track probably makes as
much or more difference than MP3 vs CD vs hi-res audio, or FM vs SiriusXM.

I’m puzzled why every studio album isn’t perfect, but many are only fair,
and some are downright awful. Yet I have some live CDs that are
spectacular, you can close your eyes and swear you are sitting right there
at the live performance.

Then there are the steering wheel thumpers that sound best on AM radio in
the car. And then there’s Louie Louie by The Kingsmen.

Now owning and operating a radio station for nearly three years (we'll be
three years old in April), I'm always amused when I hear that. But now that
I hear a song on say SiriusXM, and actually on the radio - I can certainly
tell the difference. I'd call it the depth

It may be dead, but then it might come back too; just like vinyl. OTOH,
maybe we are finding we want "music", but we don't really want to "listen".
People with good ears can tell the difference between MP3, CD, hi-res audio
(24-bit and/or flac), and vinyl. I can sometimes tell the difference, but
most of the time I'm not concentrating on the music. Most of the time, I'm
just looking for the mood.

This sums it up nicely:

I assume he is scavenging the case from a 2011 and slipping the 3011 into it.
I’ve wondered if that would work, I guess the answer is yes. Since I’m
replacing 2011’s with 3011’s, that would be a viable approach.

Is it that simple, or does it involve some mods?

Yup, I've replaced a few 2011's wuth 3011's, and since the enclosures at
those sites were too small for the rackmount case, I just put them into the
2011 cases and they fit perfectly.

2017-01-08 Thread Mathew Howard
The boards are exactly the same size, so it doesn't involve any mods, but
you might need to cut out some holes, depending on the specific model of
2011 (if they don't have sfp, etc.)... but I think all of the 2011's do
have knockouts for everything, so it's pretty simple.

I might have a $25 bill in the summer...
Probably $150 in the winter.

But yeah, if I have to make heat for something I use NG.
I do have an electric oven but I also have an NG oven. Electric does heat up
faster for some reason.

my clothes dryer, heater, and stove top. My gas bill averages $25 a month on

turn the hot water back on!)

  * it sensed when a door was open and disabled the air conditioner. Well that
is just ridiculous!!

I go to the beach to hear the oceanI want to hear the surfand not

Perhaps I should have tinkered with it(it was October so it wound up not

Hehe… there are faucets that you can make “smart” now as well – last I
looked they were extremely expensive though.

For practical stuff, I really like to know when bathroom lights are left on

Also, when nobody is home for periods of time I’ll get an alert when lights

Right now with the DYI system I have probably $4k invested plus my
time … at most. Zero monthly subscription, zero headaches …. And
no service calls.

The one part though that I think a lot of folks overlook (as I
did) is working with electrical in your house … I replaced outlets
and switches for example and the zwave stuff I used is much deeper
than normal switches – I wish now that I had just hired an
electrician to mess around with that stuff in particular as it’s
not something I do every day kind of thing ….

I know someone in my area that does home automation for a living …
done it for years. He is very busy … his main clients are folks
who have cottages and wish to remotely control/monitor their
properties especially during times they are not visiting it very
much …

Hehe… there are faucets that you can make “smart” now as well –
last I looked they were extremely expensive though.

For practical stuff, I really like to know when bathroom lights
are left on for extended periods of time by kids … when the garage
door is left open at night etc…. especially with the price of
electricity here (even with LED lighting) …

Also, when nobody is home for periods of time I’ll get an alert
when lights are left on … my hot water tank is connected – it
stops heating the water when nobody is going to be around …

I guess I have a DumbHome.

And oddly, the things I might want to check remotely don’t seem to
be on the list. Like did someone leave the bathroom faucet
running or a burner on the stove lit. With LED lights I don’t
obsess that a light might be left on for 8 hours. And I don’t
need my fridge ordering more eggs from Amazon.

The worst DIY home automation item has to be these Ring
Doorbells. For the time people spend dealing with their bugs,
they could just hire someone to house sit and call them when
someone is at the door.

Now if I could just get the dog to bring in my wife’s paper in the
morning.

Amazon pretty much killed off the brick-and-mortar record stores, but
now I find that even Amazon doesnt seem too interested in carrying

One thing I miss are the EP singles, not the 2 songs on 7 inch vinyl,
more like 4-5 songs on a CD. Often these were exclusive for Borders or

Vinyl is definitely making a big comeback. I like this service
http://www.vinylmeplease.com/. Kind of like a Vinyl of the month club but
the packaging is really cool and you can't get the same records other
places.

Renting movies on Vudu gives audio options as well. You can get SD, HD, or
HDX. HDX allows you to get movies in 5.1 or Dolby Digital 7.1.
