If you can get the VPI/VCI information try a Huawei HG610. Operates as a
true bridge. It'll do ADSL2+ or VDSL2 with pretty much any DSLAM. It's a
cheap DSL modem, the only thing that might fail in it is a capacitor (if
you're super paranoid replace the cheap capacitors before deploying it).

(PD). This meant his router was receiving a global v6

global V6 address on it's WAN port (which isn't needed for

router's WAN port have a global v6 address along with his
delegated prefix for the LAN, all was golden again.

Re: [AFMUG] DSL Router Recommendations

2016-05-03 Thread Jesse DuPont

We're 100% dual-stacked, v4/v6. If a customer's router supports v6,
they'll get a prefix from us. Here are the interesting points:

About 40% of all our customer have a v6 prefix (i.e. at a
minimum their routers support v6).
Any router we sell is configured by the installer for v6
(forcing the adoption :) )

We do graph v4 and v6 separately (at the edge) and about
10-12% of all our traffic is consistently v6. Sometimes it jumps
up to 20% for a while. This holds true for both directions.

To expand on what Dennis said, just because someone gets a v6
prefix, doesn't mean they'll have a lot of v6 traffic. It seems
while most modern mobile phones, tablets and Win 8/10 and Mac OS X
(combined with modern browsers and apps) readily use v6, most smart
TVs/streaming boxes AREN'T using v6 yet (I think the new Apple TV
might be). So even though Netflix is v6 capable, the majority of
playing devices aren't so therefore it happens over v4.

Other somewhat interesting, slightly OT v6 stuff:
As an experiment, I watched Torch of an iPad streaming a Netflix
movie. The iPad had both v4 and v6 global. Of course, with any HLS,
the player is downloading 10s or 20s segments at a time. When it
would download the next segment it did it with 4 separate TCP
substreams (not abnormal), but it would switch between v6 and v4,
often times using both at the same time. One segment would be three
v6 substreams and one v4 substream, next time it would be 2/2, and
so on. Contrast that with Youtube, which on a v6 device, will be
100% over v6; same with Facebook.

Separately: I had a customer call in last week; his DirecTV DVR quit
working consistently (no guide data, couldn't connect) and when it
did, it would only work for a while, then quit again. Two things
were happening: I had one v6 DNS server down for a few days. Most
everything used the secondary DNS server, but not his network. 2nd
thing: At that site, I was only doing prefix delegation (PD). This
meant his router was receiving a global v6 prefix and advertising it
on his LAN, but wasn't getting a global V6 address on it's WAN port
(which isn't needed for v6 routing, but could be needed if the
router is doing DNS proxy using v6 DNS servers, for example). Once I
let his router's WAN port have a global v6 address along with his
delegated prefix for the LAN, all was golden again.

Maybe a decade from now we'll be able to ditch NAT :(

Yes, there are several v6/v4 and v4/v6 translation mechanisms, but those are
really just different types of Network Address Translation, regardless of if
they are officially called that or not.

Seth,

I think it is pick your battles when you can. Some of use run at 100%
capacity in execution, and we have to carve out additional time to do whatever
the "other" things are. And there are a LOT of those "other" things for
growing companies.

We all know it's important. But, if it is so easy, then when it's time to
hit it head on as it will being impacting our functionality, we can "easily"
take that time, at that time :)

I'm curious why my traffic isn't' reflecting this. I'll look into routes
and make sure it all looks right. On another note; has anyone been
following this whole Google - Comcast IPv6 kerfluffle?

Google reports that 25.76% of their US traffic is IPv6.

Facebook reports that their IPv6 performance is 20% - 40% faster than IPv4.

Since most of the major websites are now ipv6 enabled (google, youtube,

traffic to be ipv6.

To be technical, it's not going to remove NAT on your network for the
foreseeable future unless when you add IPV6 that you also give everybody a
public IPV4 as well :P

Maybe a decade from now we'll be able to ditch NAT :(

Yes, there are several v6/v4 and v4/v6 translation mechanisms, but those
are really just different types of Network Address Translation, regardless
of if they are officially called that or not.

(Not that you don't know this Mike, I just don't want the nice people
following along with the list to get the wrong information about the ipv6
transition.)

Does anyone running a dual-stack network graph their IPv6 internet traffic?
I only have my home traffic to compare to right now but the IPv6 is a
trickle of the IPv4. Until the tipping point happens where enough of the
internet CONTENT has moved to IPv6, then there will not be anything driving
adoption in a real way.

What is the Model # on the Uvermodem you have ?

And do you have Static IP address from ATT ? or just the normal dynamic ip's ?

I can send you appropriate docs on how to configure...

I know that I have UVerse at my office with a /29 block, and it is
straightforward to put a router behind their device, I’m using an RB2011. The
default gateway is the highest IP address in the block.

If this is a business and they just have a dynamic IP address with DHCP/NAT,
maybe suggest they upgrade to a static IP block, I don’t think it cost that
much.

You can request a different modem/router. UVerse offers their business class
users a Netgear model that does have bridge mode.

Can you set the att device as a bridge?

Then you can get any off the shelf router with ppoe support (xyxel Usg or

I was able to configure one to "pass" the public IP address over to a

convoluted though. Not sure why they don't just have a bridge setting.

2016-05-01 Thread Trey Scarborough
On the ATT 2wire routers it no longer has an option for bridge. I think
they wanted to make certain they have access to upgrade them. Instead
they have a feature called pinhole I believe. Look for it in the
firewall settings. Basically you tell it the mac you want it to go to
and it does a proxy arp for the public address you get. So both the
2wire and your router have the same address on the on the outside, but
it forwards all the traffic in to the pinhole mac.

the current DSL Router. It came from AT&T and just worked. In the
current DSL World, are things still PPPoE, or since they have a pair of
wires back to the DSLAM, the authenticate you that way?

I was just converting a customer from Frontier that had a Nighthawk
Router. I didn't pay too much attention to it, but it had a Drop down
box to select your DSL Provider. I don't remember if it had PPPoE
Settings in it or not.

Then set up your router of choice to do PPPoE, I assume you know the

I'm doing work at an office that is fed with AT&T DSL. The AT&T router
is a piece of Garbage. I can't disable the internal DHCP Server, or do
any IPV4 port forwarding (however, it is handing out IPv6 addresses) On
the inside of the network, I already have unifi and Managed switches, so
I just need a hardwired DSL router with no Wifi. Any recommendations
for one? I'd love to use a Mikrotik, but I don't think they ever came
out with a Routerboard with a DSL Port did they?

2016-05-01 Thread That One Guy /sarcasm
I ran into this with an AT&T customer once, I finally dicked around in
their router and got it to bridge, I had to do something with the dhcp
server, I don't completely recall, but the AT&T tech was a douche so I hung
up on him and figured it out. I wish I could remember what I had to do. I
remember though that the interface terms didn't make sense on their face
but once I did whatever it was that I did, it worked, but they may have had
a /29 applied to the router

It seems like the "Official" Solution is to put a 2nd router behind it,
then put that router on a DMZ Address. Wouldn't that mean Double NAT
Then? And probably loose all the IPv6 then.
