Re: [AMRadio] WTB - MURCH UT-2000A
The Murch UT-2000A is a commercial version of the classic Ultimate Transmatch designed by Lew McCoy and featured in the July 1970 issue of QST and numerous ARRL handbooks. It's called ultimate because it is able to match coaxial-fed antennas, end-fed wires, and with the addition of a 4:1 balun, balanced feeders. The manual is on BAMA and I can send you a copy of the QST article if you need it. Add a good SWR/power meter and once you learn how to tune it, the Murch will match most anything you can hook to it, 160-10 meters, up to a KW. 73, Bob W9RAN __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Post: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body. Re: [AMRadio] retro 75
I posted this on AM Fone but I'll toss it out here too, since we've been talking about the Retro 75 a lot. One idea for packaging would be to find a basic old mobile CB (working or not) at a garage sale or thrift store. Gut it, and mount the Retro 75 board where the CB board used to be. You'd have a mic (probably connectorized), speaker, coax and power connections, and two spots for the tuning and volume pots. I'd want to change the appearance so it didn't look like a CB anymore but it would be an easy way to get most of the parts needed, probably for only a few bucks. Just a thought. 73, Bob W9RAN __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Post: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body. Re: [AMRadio] FCC Non-cooperation (was ILLEGAL STUFF ON E BAY)
Not to detract from Steve's point, because I agree that RFI from unintentional radiators is a major problem for hams, especially those who enjoy full-range AM audio on HF. But it's important to understand how the FCC approaches the wide range of Part 15 issues - here are a couple of good resources: FCC: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/procedures.html#sec1 ARRL: http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/part15.html#Myths An A2LA-certified RF test lab: www.radiomet.com/documents/FCC_Guide.pdf Once you're familiar with the terminology used to characterize unlicensed devices, I think most will agree that our problems stem primarily from both Class A (intended for commercial, industrial, and business use) and B (residential) Unintentional Radiators. This can involve both Conducted (interference that is carried along power lines and other conductors to other devices, i.e. our receivers) and Radiated emissions (what Steve measured with his spectrum analyzer). The vast majority of such devices are subject to Verification, which is the lowest level of compliance. Manufacturers are on the honor system to do the appropriate testing and label the product accordingly. Even when manufacturers make a good faith effort to comply with Part 15 Verification requirements, the real world implementation may not reflect what was seen in the laboratory. Take for example the noisy LED traffic light that Steve posted about some time ago. Suppose the manufacturer recommended that shielded cable be used between the switchmode controller and the lights to mitigate radiated RFI, but the installers just re-used the unshielded wires that were used for the old incandescent systems. Instant antenna! As hams, we know the length of the wires and whether they're run inside a metal pole or along the side of a wooden one will make a big difference also. Just a made-up example to show that the problem may often not be as simple as going back on the manufacturer of one of the devices in question. Still, the intent of Part 15 is to protect licensed users from interference from unlicensed devices, and the best option we have to enforce current regulations (or potentially get better ones) is to continue to elevate our concerns to the FCC and those who oversee the agency. 73, Bob W9RAN __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Post: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body. He'd had an inquiry about an unusual talking blues tune about the boxer Jack Johnson that someone thought was done by Ray Stevens. I can only guess, but whoever would confuse Jaime Brockett with Ray Stevens must have been partaking of the same rope that the first mate did. For those who think this is nuts and off-topic, you're at least half right - but The Ballad of the USS Titanic was one of many obscure yet great tunes that worked their way into my impressionable young consciousness by way of the 50,000 watt voice of KAAY, Little Rock in the late '60s, and the late-night album-oriented rock program called Beaker Street. It was the first underground music program on an AM blowtorch and, to pull things slightly back toward topic, the host, Clyde Clifford was the name a real person - but not the one playing the music. Clyde W. Clifford was the comptroller general of LIN Broadcasting, owners of KAAY, and it was an inside joke that DJs would pick their air names from the suits. The real name of the guy who did the show was Dale Seidenschwarz and his HAM callsign is WA5AVA. Clyde held a First Class Radiotelephone license, required to run a 50,000 watt AM station in those days, and got his start as a transmitter engineer! Those head bangers don't have anything on the Beaker Street gang! Indeed not! And if you're not aware, Beaker Street can still be heard on Sunday nights on KKPT 94.1 in Little Rock, or via streaming audio on the web. http://www.beakerstreet.com/ Now instead of covering half a continent, the program can be heard anywhere in the world, but it's just not the same without the selective fading and QRN. [AMRadio] Negative Resistance Oscillators
I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with zinc negative resistance oscillators. I've used tips from K7NS, Nyle Steiner's Spark Bang Buzz website: http://home.earthlink.net/~lenyr/zincosc.htm to create working audio and RF oscillators using negative resistance devices made from galvanized sheet metal. While it takes patience to find the sensitive zinc oxide spots and the power level is very low, they do work surprisingly well. K7NS used an LC circuit to make an oscillator on the broadcast band, but I thought crystal control would be interesting to try, and to my delight, the output is clean and stable. I've had success with both an old 1196 khz crystal that I had in my junkbox, and a 3.58 mhz TV color crystal. It's definitely QRPp, but coupled to an antenna, the signal can be heard around the house. I've also had good results using a backwards audio-output transformer fed from a CD player as an AM modulator. It's pretty cool to transmit music with good fidelity using a transmitter made our of junk! Take a look at my short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDBpBYkRw0Q I'd love to hear from others who are interested in experimenting with this kind of stuff. 73, Bob W9RAN __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Re: [AMRadio] HRO-50
On the topic of the HRO-50 - Is anyone familiar with a product detector mod that plugs into the NBFM socket and uses a single 6J6? Re: [AMRadio] Boatanchor Transmitter FS in Salem, OR
I guess at 55 I'm about average age for this stuff. One thing I've noticed in other vintage hobbies is that the ones that seem to thrive have a feeder system for brining new blood into the hobby. I see this with the large local antique engine club, for example, where their annual show (this weekend) is very family-oriented. Same for the hot-rod and collector car groups, antique malls, etc. I'm no better at predicting the future than anyone else, but it seems logical that the best way to prolong this aspect of ham radio is to find ways to encourage newcomers and younger hams to get involved. This thread reminds me of the article that appeared in the local newspaper this week, explaining that the local AM radio station's absence from the airwaves was only temporary, due to a transmitter problem that couldn't be fixed because parts for the transmitter are no longer available. It's a 5 KW rig, and while no details were given, the inference was that a big item failed, which leads me to suspect power supply iron. But geez, what kind of BC engineer couldn't hooble up a pole pig replacement (borrowed from the electric company) in a couple of hours, like I remember a CE doing back in the 60's? Re: [AMRadio] Home Brew
If I were going to build with tubes again and two hundred watts was the carrier output that I wanted. I would use a pair of 812s in push pull class C and modulate with a pair of 811As push pull class B. I have parts of an old homebrew 10 meter AM transmitter and it looks like this is what he did too, only using 811s in the finals as well as modulators. Probably the simplest/cheapest way to get some power back in the early 50s. 73, Bob W9RAN
Re: [AMRadio] R-274 Reciever
Hi Geoff, I've got one too, nice radio. 73, Bob W9RAN - Original Message - From: Geoff/W5OMR [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Discussion of AM Radio amradio@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, August 19, 2004 9:00 PM Subject: Re: [AMRadio] R-274 Reciever I'm trying to get a feel for how many of these fine ol' recievers there are, out there. I've got two - an R-274, serial 461 and an R-274D, serial 1142. I know Dave/W4QCU has one, just outside of Knoxville, and I was recently contacted by a serious SWL who's got another. That's 5, that I know that are still in use. Are there any others? My R-274 is he mil version of the Hallicrafters SX-73. It's at my home in Houston Texas but doesn't get used much as I prefer the R-390a. Well, that makes 6. Someone said they knew someone else who bought one that was still in the crate and gave it to someone else (over in Northern MS) bringing the total to 7, so far. More? 73 = Best Regards, -Geoff/W5OMR __ AMRadio mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net
Re: [AMRadio] Tower Construction
Yep, so I've heard. Making crankups must be like making ladders, half the cost is insurance. The one I have is about 40 ft. and is 3 sections of aluminum tower with steel shit in between for the pulleys. Most of them were rusted and it cost me a fortune to have new ones welded up. Still a cheap tower compared with new. My main tower is 55' Rohn 25 with the tilt-over in the middle. Chickenshits like me don't climb! But Rohn finally quit making these cuz too many dumbshits didn't follow instructions and den dey fall down go boom. A company called Radian bought out Rohn. See: http://www.rohnnet.com/ for more information. The best news is they are restarting the old Rohn manufacturing plant in the Peoria, Il. area. If I remember correctly someone else bought out Rohn's galvanizing facility here in the Peoria area. (I believe it was someone from the Chicago area but could stand to be corrected) So Radian is having this company do their galvanizing. (again this could stand to be corrected) This link will take you to the original Rohn catalog: http://www.rohnnet.net/rohnnet2004/html2004/index.html Hope this helps. How many of you remember that Rohn made a crank up tower?? I was interested in buying one a few years ago but when I called Rohn they would not admit having built one. I finally got some documentation on the one I was interested in. It was not rated very high for windload for it's size so I passed on it. Later I acquired a number of old QST's that had a number of ads in them for Rohn crank ups. They must have had some serious issues with them. 73 Larry WA9VRH - Original Message - From: Brian Carling [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Discussion of AM Radio amradio@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2004 5:11 PM Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Tower Construction I know that with the Rohn 25G they recommend no more than three sections without guys. Not sure on the 55G, but it might be on someone's web site. I heard Rohn went out of business which is a D*n shame, in my opinion. They were a great company that has supplied great products for decades. Someone is probably now selling a cheap Chinese imitation made out of recycled pot metal and retailing for 90% of the Rohn price! snip ___ AMRadio mailing list AMRadio@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio
Re: [AMRadio] KW restoration and need a bit of help on this one
Hi Pat, I'd looked at your transmitter pics before but never had read about Mr. Tucker himself. Thanks for posting the pictures and other information, so much of the human aspect of our hobby has been lost over the years. Glad you're having success with the transmitter too, but be sure to keep one hand in your pocket around the HV, I'm sure Texas Power and Light built those trannys to last! 73, Bob W9RAN
Re: [AMRadio] FW: Homebrew receiver
Hi Pete, Your e-mail, aside from provoking my BA-envy response ;-) - reminded me that I need to order the big Signal One CX-7 operating and service manual. It's listed in your catalog for $49.20, must be a big mutha! Can you take payment via Paypal? Much faster, if so I'll do it today, just let me know what your account name is. Thanks and 73, Bob W9RAN
Re: [AMRadio] It followed me home Ma. Can I keep it?
What a beauty, Mark! On the other end of the spectrum, here's pics of several transmitters that did not survive the California fires. May they RIP! http://earthsignals.com/add_CGC/KCAL_KFRG_KSGN_fire.htm 73, Bob W9RAN
