[amsat-bb] AO-73

I just tried to work AO-73. I can hear the beacon just fine, but no
transponder. Isn't it supposed to be on low power? Is anyone hearing it?

[amsat-bb] sat equip sale

2013-11-24 Thread Jeff KB2M
First I would like to say thanks for all the replies about my move, and sale
of equipment. What a great group on this SIG. I did make it down here to my
shore home today to try and work AO-73, by the time I got here I could just
make the last pass of the day. Unfortunately it was a .6 degree pass that
lasted about 2 minutes. So no joy. I did get everything configured in
SatPC32 and will be ready next time I make it down here.

I also want to thank everyone for their concerns, but this is a happy time
in my life, I recently re-married and we're planning to move to Florida. I'm
looking for a home near the beach, but still antenna friendly, this is
proving to be difficult . Just in case, I'm going to keep the Cushcraft
AOP's, and the 9100. I see the satellite aspect of this hobby getting
better .

When I get back home tonite I will update the for sale list and send it out
to all who requested it.

[amsat-bb] K2I DE sat trip

2013-07-05 Thread Jeff KB2M
I'm sorry I didn't get to work everyone on SO-50 who called me this morning
when I was in DE but I just wasn't hearing the bird as well as I would of
liked to. I did work 3 of you, so I guess the trip was worth it. I was
thinking of making the early morning passes tomorrow, but it is just too
early for me to realistically think I could get there in time. I will be on
at my summer home (with the good antennas in SNJ :-) ) for the rest of the
event. I hope to work everyone from NJ as K2I.

[amsat-bb] Re: error loading SatPC32

2013-02-05 Thread Jeff KB2M
This makes sense Eric as I tried to replace the PRIOR.SQF file in CfgIV(the
one I had selected when the failure happened) with the PRIOR.SQF from Cfg1.
This didn't fix the error. I at that point ran DATABACKUP which of course
over wrote any and all of the files in question. If this happens again, I
will send you the 2 files. Thanks everyone for your help

Hello Alan, Jeff and others
with V. 12.8b DATABACKUP contained in the PROGRAMS list upon installation.
The message Error loading PRIOR.SQF indicates a missing or damaged file
PRIOR.SQF but more probably a missing or damaged file SatStart.SQF which
stores a lot of settings when the program is configured. Unfortunately I
didn't change the text of the error message between loading these 2 files.

The files
are stored in the DATA folder SatPC32 for configuration 1 and in the
subfolders CfgII .. CfgIV for the 3 other configurations.

I don't know the reason yet that causes the error, however. Perhpas it would
be good to send me the files 2 files if the error occurs. As Alan mentioned
already: The easiest solution is to store a working configuration with
DATABACKUP and to restore it with this tool if necessary.

BTW: The path to the DATA folder SatPC322 is displayed in the footline of
menu Satellites. The folder Application data or Apps data is hidden
by default. So, it is necessary to make hidden files visible (Windows
Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View).

 Jeff,

Sorry the easy fix did not work. I had no problem with the default
PRIOR.SQF, even though I had made different priorities. Hmmm.

I have the DATABACKUP in my PROGRAMS list. I can't remember whether it
comes that way, or I added it to the PROGRAM.SQF file.

 Glad it is working again!

[amsat-bb] Re: error loading SatPC32

2013-02-04 Thread Jeff KB2M
Thanks Alan. I tried to copy a Prior.SQF from a different config setup and
it didn't work. This tells me that each Prior.SQL is somehow different. I
ended up doing as you suggested, restoring it from a SatPC32 databackup that
I ran when I installed the new version. The program now starts.
Unfortunately, as this is my rover laptop that I have configured for a
different QTH I lost all my unique settings for that QTH. I will now run
SatPC32 databackup every time I make any major changes. Lesson learned

Jeff,

The PRIOR.SQF is used to tell the program the priority of satellites to
track if more than one is visible. I just experimented by renaming mine,
and got that message. I don't know the cause, but your is either damaged or
missing.

I use WIN7. Assuming WIN8 is similar, and you are using CONFIG I ,yours
will be in:

C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\SatPC32\PRIOR.SQF (Replace Alan with your
account name on your computer.)

You can recover it from your system backups, which I assume you make.
Another way is to use the SATPC32 DATABACKUP program, which will restore
things to the last time you used it. It will be in the base SATPC32
directory. A third way will be to get it from the default files which are
installed:

C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\SatPC32\SQF_Files_Eng\PRIOR.SQF (Replace
Alan with your account name on your computer.)

With luck, one of these will work. Possibly a simpler way to locate the
files is with a good search utility.

Alan

Hi!

Since I first posted about Hector CO6CBF coming to the AMSAT Symposium in
Orlando next week, I have received lots of e-mails showing appreciation for
this effort. Thanks to everyone for their support! I wanted to mention
that I have already received some checks at my mailbox today, in response to
the request I made for donations to help with the expenses related to
Hector's trip. I won't list names and calls, but here is what arrived so
far:

$200 check from Texas
$ 25 check from Arkansas
$ 20 check from Alabama

Along with a $50 check I received from Tennessee some time ago before I went
public with this effort on the -BB, this means I have already received $295
toward Hector's trip. Since I have not had time to scribble a web page
related to this, I will post updates here on the -BB and my Twitter feed
updates related to Hector's trip.
I do not intend on making public a list of names and calls of those who have
contributed, as a few have asked for anonymity - which I will respect. All
contributions are appreciated, no matter how big or small.

A couple of hams have asked me if I would accept contributions in person at
the Symposium next week. This would be OK with me. In person, cash would
also be acceptable. You could send me cash through the mail, but all
standard disclaimers regarding cash sent through the mail apply.

Hector sent an e-mail out this morning to me and a few others. He is back
in his home city Cienfuegos, after a quick trip to Havana so he could pick
up his passport with its newly-issued US visa at the US embassy (formally
called the US Interests Section, which operates as a branch of the Swiss
embassy in Havana due to the lack of diplomatic relations between the USA
and Cuba) yesterday morning.
Hector delivered his passport to a Cuban immigration office in Cienfuegos
today, so his Cuban travel permit can also be put into his passport. He
should be able to pick that up tomorrow, and then he has all the
government-issued documentation needed to make the trip - and I can purchase
his air ticket for the flights between Havana and Miami.

That's all for now. Things are falling into place, with not much time
remaining until the Symposium. For those not able to make it to Orlando,
I'm sure there will be photos and videos posted from the Symposium featuring
Hector. More on that later.

73!

I'm helping a Florida group prepare for an ISS school contact. One of their

tries to start by displaying an icon on the taskbar, the icon disappears
after a few seconds. Nothing shows up on the screen, no errors. Nothing.
Does anyone have a clue? I'm only at home a few days a week to try and test
this to get it SatPC32ISS working with a 9100 for the group doing the

[amsat-bb] kb3wsw's first sat contact on so-50

2012-03-10 Thread Jeff KB2M
Thanks a lot k8yse John for recording Liz's first sat contact. We just
played the recording and realize that there were other people calling Liz.
We weren't listening as we're getting our new shack ready for the carpet
installers that are going to show up this morning. Liz says a big thank you
for the contact, and the recording of the event

[amsat-bb] 847 for sale

2012-02-28 Thread Jeff KB2M
I would like to offer my Yaesu FT-847 for sale. I purchased this radio new
in 1998. It is an early model but does accept computer control. I waited
till the com port issues were resolved before I purchased mine. It has been
back to Yaesu maybe once for an alignment, no problems I just thought it
would be a good idea. I'm not having any problems with it, but have replaced
it with an Icom C-9100 and just don't use it anymore.. Here is what you will
get.
1 one owner FT-847 in nice condition.
 1 FC-20 HF/6M antenna tuner
 1 YF-112S-02 SSB filter
 1 Symek TNC3S
 1 hand mic
 1 Yaesu MD-100 desk mic

Original Manual, and box for the 847. Various cables to hook it all
together. The 847 has the Symek 64k baud wide front end mod. This doesn't
affect the normal performance as it is a just an isolated tap off of the RX
front end that has its own wide receiver. It allows you to receive 38k4 baud
packet.

I'm asking $900.00 for the entire package shipped insured CONUS. Outside
the CONUS I will calculate actual shipping costs, minus estimated CONUS.
Also I will donate 10% of the net profit from the sale and apply to the
AMSAT program of the purchasers choice

[amsat-bb] moving Sat contacts to LOTW and DXLab

2012-02-12 Thread Jeff KB2M

I'm in the process of moving my main logging program from LOGIC to DXLab.
I've been using DXLab for years as a backup and also to track my LOTW
progress. I never really tried to include my 16,687 satellite contacts into
this until now. I vaguely remember this subject, subject being sat contacts
in LOTW and DXLab. I'm looking for help in doing both. If anyone wrote
anything up, like a procedure to follow it would be greatly appreciated. I
tried searching the DXLab documentation this morning and I was overwhelmed,
there is a lot of it :-) Thanks in advance for any help...

[amsat-bb] Re: SatPS32 off screen window

2011-12-10 Thread Jeff KB2M
First , as I was very tired last night from working at finishing up my
newly finished basement shack I neglected to mention I didn't have the
problem will all SatPC32 configurations, the program was behaving properly
with configuration 1. I avoided this issue for at least a year until now, as
I had to add another radio.
I did a search for all occurrences' of SatPos.SQF I found the offending
file, did an edit, but the edit wouldn't stick as I couldn't quit the
program properly(with a proper quit) as the SatPC32 window was still off
screen. What I figured out I had to do, was change the SatPC32 shortcut
start properties to start maximized. After the program came up, I then saved
it with a quit. Then changed startup properties back to a normal window.
Then restarted SatPC32 and positioned the window where I wanted it to
startup and then did another quit. I had to do this for configurations 2, 3,
and 4. I'm running XP , never configured a second monitor, I have no idea
how this happened. Thanks for all the help. All is once again good in KB2M
sat op land :-)

Hi Jeff,
if you have at least a part of the program window on the screen move it back

with the mouse to the position you want. Then close the program from the
menu File, Quit. That will save the last screen position. Closing the
program with the x control will not.

If the window is completely off the screen, change the two first entries in
the text file SatPos.SQF in the SatPC32 DATA folder, for example set both
values to 0. The window will then be positioned in the uppler left corner of

the screen.

The data folder is hidden by default. So, make all files and folders visible

(Explorer- Tools - Folder Options - View). The path of the folder depends on

the OS, under XP it is C:\Documents and Settings\Username \AppData\SatPC32,
under Vista and Windows 7 it is C:\User\Username\AppData\Roaming\SatPC32.

[amsat-bb] Re: SatPS32 off screen window

2011-12-10 Thread Jeff KB2M
The problem was that the window was off screen AND the move option wasn't
available, all that was available was minimize, or x close. Try right
clicking on the satps32 in the taskbar, then try an alt space bar. The
observer two window comes up with the move option, and that is what will
move :-). Like I said none of the normal window fixes worked, or were
available.
What I did fixed the problem, and also after I sent my last post I had to
chuckle as what Erich said would of course worked if executed before I
loaded SatPC32...

When a window is off screen, it is possible to move that window on screen
by
right clicking it in the task bar, selecting move, and then holding down the

appropriate left or right arrow keys to move it on the display. Try it
some
time to see how it works and then you'll be ready for the moment.

[amsat-bb] Re: moderated list

2011-12-09 Thread jeff kb2m
I like the list the way it is. When someone starts a negative thread they
usually end up making an ass out of themselves, and then go away. In these

Having been a member of the list since the early 90's, I have seen my share
of
the same name calling, finger pointing etc. When AO-40 ceased operations,
there
was finger pointing as to who was responsible for what and who did what.
This
went on for weeks and weeks. There have been many more instances of this.

We have always had problems with let's say one person being negative and
starting a flame thread going. What makes this list unique is that it is not

moderated and everyone can voice their opinion.

How would you feel if you posted a message to the list and you used a word
in it
that the moderator felt was not appropriate for the list and your message
was
bounced? It puts a tremendous amount of work and responsibility on the
moderator. He cannot do it alone so you will have multiple moderators. Now,
you
have several people all of which will be interpreting the rules a different
way.
We see this in the court room on a daily basis. One guy robs a bank and gets
5
years another does it and gets 2. One is caught DWI and gets probation
another
gets 2 years. This is how our messages will be interpreted and this is
probably
worse than us being able to filter what we want when we want.

When a thread does not meet my standards, I filter the thread to the junk
bin
and if there is someone that is continuously wreaking havoc, I filter them
out.
I have total control of what I read and see. And, as some have done over the

years including board members, unsubscribe. These are all choices that are
available to you and none of them needs or requires a list moderator.

Since it has been a while since these have been up on the list, I want to
remind folks that this requires an early early early generation slot,
called an ISA slot. The drivers for the card are STRICTLY DOS 6.2 and
earlier interrupt handlers and are zero likely to work on a modern

If you have an old machine with ISA slots, running DOS, this board was

[amsat-bb] 5500 rotor problem

2011-10-07 Thread Jeff KB2M
Starting to put my satellite system back on the air. Now having another
rotor problem. I think what happened is that after Hurricane Irene passed
by, everything was working. Later that morning a surprisingly strong wind
gust after Irene passed by blew my sat array over. I was unaware of this and
when I tried to work a sat I had a very weak signal. I went outside to check
the antenna system and found it laying on the ground. So what I think
happened is that the rotor was trying to turn while the antenna was on the
ground and burned out something in the rotor. It is not a cable problem, it
is definitely in the azimuth rotor, elevation works fine. I swap cables and
this showed the problem is in the az rotor only. Anyone have this same
problem? I'm going to take the rotor apart this weekend and would like some
ideas before I start. Any electrical test through the cable from inside the
shack to determine the problem would be much appreciated :-)

Ok I started working the problem tonight. I would first like to thank, Al
Wa4sca, Stan W1le, and Jeff N3qo, for some ideas on what the problem might
be. What I found so far is an open between 4 5 and 6. Any combination of
the three is open. So I'm assuming I burned out the motor windings in the
azimuth rotor to cause an open. I'm also assuming as the rotor is less than
3 years old that it doesn't have a fused link? I went through my parts bin
and found a working Yaesu G-450 rotor. I wonder if the 450 and the 5500
azimuth rotor use the same motor, did anyone try this?

found it and plan on framing it and hanging it in my shack. Mark will be
missed on the ISS.

Subject: [amsat-bb] MARK AUSTIN KB1GRV

Hi all:I received this from Phil, N1EP. I thought there would be a number of
you that might like to know.Pete, K1HZU

Hello Folks,

If you have not heard already, local (Franklin/Ellsworth) ham Mark Austin,
KB1GVR, became a silent key on August 8. Graveside services will be this
Thursday, Aug 18, at 11AM at Woodbine cemetery in Ellsworth.

Mark was very prolific in space communications. In 2002, he told me that he
was
listening to his scanner, I think in 1997, and heard Russian voices coming
over
the speaker about every hour and 36 minutes. He discovered the voices were
from
cosmonauts on board the Mir Space Station. He then started recording their
SSTV
broadcasts and then went out and bought his first computer so he could see
the
pictures he had previously recorded from the Soviet slow scan TV
transmissions.  That inspired him to earn his ham ticket so he could talk
to the cosmonauts. And talk, he did. Since then, Mark has become well known
aboard the space shuttles and International Space Station by many astronauts
and cosmonauts.

Not only has Mark talked to them on voice mode, but became extremely
proficient
at using the space station and satellites to communicate digitally. He even
discovered a new way of using one particular satellite to extend
communication
capability.

Mark had the opportunity to meet some of the spacemen he had befriended
on-the-air when he made visits to Mission Control in Houston and to Kennedy
Space Center, where he also was thrilled to watch a shuttle launch.

His enthusiasm with space communications inspired many hams to give it a
try,
including myself. His advice was spot on so that I twice successfully made
voice contacts to the space station. I also had fun with Oscar-14 with
Mark's
tips. If you operated an APRS station in Maine, you would recognize the
KB1GVR
call sign, as Mark was also an avid APRS fan.

Mark's other pastimes included racing and flying with his brother in his
plane
where his same determination brought him lots of success, rewards, and joy.
The
walls of Marks home were decorated with the many ham radio and racing
certificates and awards he had earned and his vast collection of space
communications QSL cards is amazing, as many EAWA members can attest to as
Mark
has brought them in for display in the past.

Mark was only 50 years old, but in his too-short life, he accomplished a
lot.
As N1DP said on last night's Washington County ARES Net, Godspeed Mark. We
will
miss you.

73, Phil Duggan, N1EP

[amsat-bb] 5500 rotor problem

2011-07-22 Thread Jeff KB2M

Thanks for all the replies on my 5500 rotor problem! I had some time tonite
to work on it and here's what I got. On both a1 a3, and e1 e3 pairs I'm
reading only 1.0 volts. Between a2 a3 , and e2 e3 pairs I see only .5 volts
at half range, IE an elevation of 90 degrees = a reading of .5 volts. I'm
going to order a new Q2 UA7806C and this should do it. Only question I have
is why Q2 failed to only output 1 volt, don't they usually fail and output 0
volts? I'm thinking it might be something else in the circuit feeding power
to Q2. If so I will work this further when I actually take the rotor box
apart with the new Q2 in hand. One other thing, I wish I can find all my
components' I boxed up when I moved. I bet I have 10 of these in stock :)
Thanks again for all the help guys, the electronic copy of the manual was a
big help as I can't find my copy

73 Jeff kb2m

I'm having a problem with my 5500 after a thunderstorm. What is

happening is that the rotor works manually, but doesn't display az and

 el

information

on the control box. Also when I try to use computer control it goes

 all

the

way to stop in both azimuth and elevation. I'm thinking this might be

 in

the

control box, as both az and el are doing the same thing, the control

box being the single point of failure. Did anyone ever have this

problem? How can I diagnosis what chip might be at fault without a

schematic. I vaguely remember having this same problem after a close

lightning strike with my prior az el Yaesu box about 14 years ago but

don't remember what chip I swapped out, or how I determined which one

was at fault. This getting old thing really sucks. Any help would be
appreciated.

[amsat-bb] Re: FM satellites

2011-07-07 Thread Jeff KB2M
I remember one winter sometime around 1998 there was a real bad ice storm
on the east coast. Canadian hams were using AO-27 to pass health and welfare
traffic. There was no electricity up there for months, propagation was bad,
there was no other way for some. I passed some traffic myself, sent out an
email letting relatives know that they were ok. And yes while this was
trying to go on, people were still calling CQ, and asking for grid squares
:)

If it wasn't for the Oscar class stations making HI POWER multi contacts
who would help the vast majority of weak portable FD stations make their one
FD contact? Certainly not a weak station calling CQ for 5 passes! I've
never heard two OCS making contact with each other, it's always with a much
weaker station. This is the other side of the same argument heard every year
after FD. Anyway I got my contact :)

Icom is coming out with a new hf/sat rig the IC-9100. It looks to be a bit
pricy at around $3000 or so, but it will be newer technology. I sold my 910
to make room for one on my desk :) I did keep my trusty 14 year old 847 I
purchased new. I would recommend the 847 over the 910, and if you have the

I am finally in the market for a base station radio for satellites.  I
should mention that I am also planning to install a wire dipole in the
backyard for HF work, but convenience shouldn't be the reason to buy/not to
buy a radio.

It seems that the Icom 910 and Yaesu 847 are the two main transceivers in
base use for satellites.  I know some folks are using the Kenwood TS2000, bu
i t I understand thatit has a birdie that makes operation on a couple FM
satellites challenging.  I am hoping to work both the linear and fm birds
with this transceiver.

Is there a BB favorite?  Have I just opened up a bad can of worms?  I just
want to make sure that I am purchasing the proper parts the first time

Thanks,

[amsat-bb] Re: Delaware for 13 Colonies

2010-07-03 Thread Jeff KB2M
I will be on the 1108z pass of AO-51 tomorrow morning from Delaware Bay.
I'm sorry but this is the only pass I can guarantee. I might be on some more
FM bird passes later on in the day if I find us fishing within Delaware's 3
mile limit. I will be in FM28, and call used will be KB2M/K2E/MM. I hope to
work everyone who is trying to do the Sweep via satellite. I finished the
sweep last night on HF, and worked a few sat 13 colony stations today for my
special satellite logo...

Last year at Dayton, where it was not so much announced as broadly hinted

functions of the D7, plus a thorough modernization for components and
features. It will be interesting to see whether they deliver on that.
After being burned with the Alinco last year, I will hold off on ordering

[amsat-bb] Re: Field Day AO-51 configuration - another option

2010-05-05 Thread Jeff KB2M
The trouble with V/S is that any clueless group trying to make a sat
contact will be blindly transmitting on the 2m uplinks. Since nothing is
being heard on the UHF downlink, they think the bird is open, so call CQ
even more. Their thinking mode V/U, it totally blows away the S band D/L.
This happened 3 or 4 years ago. The whole pass was people calling CQ FD
without listening to the mode s D/L. A disaster. I don't think I heard even
1 contact being made on several east coast passes I tried. We have to
remember there are a lot of groups trying to make a sat contact for the
points, that don't read this SIG, so they just try calling on the V/U
frequencies. I'm for L/U. It would be cool to try L/S, but I think I was
told it isn't possible because it wouldn't leave a channel for control?

One thing I would like to see tried, perhaps for one FD as a test, would be
to relax the restrictions on FM mode contacts where one or both of the
frequencies is above 70 cm. That would certainly encourage people to try
L/U or V/S. Based on last year's numbers, every L/U station could have
worked every other station easily, given the shortness of a FD QSO.
Considering that people manage to work these modes portable, and in the case
of N5AFV, mobile, it is relatively easy to get on. The mode-S downlink is
truly loud, easily overcoming the general 2.45 GHz QRM/QRN.

Ryan,

Remembering a lng way back, but there is a RX-TX control which selects
which the frequency and other controls effect. That include the mike steps.
So you can use the mike click, but there is no good way to work with both TX
and RX. The clicks get spread between them. Back in the packsat days, I
set the uplink and left it alone. Then I switched to the RX and let the
AMSAT-TAPR interface do the frequency tracking. The DSP-2232 would also
work, though only for 1200 baud.

[amsat-bb] Re: FT847 and Lightning

2010-03-12 Thread Jeff KB2M
Joel, I took a lightning hit with my 847 in 1997. It was a big one, took
out my sat tv, phone, TNC's , KCT card, computer's, etc. I had
disconnected the antennas, power, everything except the modem(remember
them?), that's where it got in, through the phone line, to the rs-232 port.
I had an APRS station I left up and didn't disconnect during the event and
it was fine! Go figure. To make a long story short I sent the 847 in that
was only 3 weeks old to be looked at. Yaesu graciously fixed it under
warranty. I was also Leary about keeping a lightning compromised radio after
a lightning hit but I really didn't want to sell it to anyone so I kept it.
Now 11 years later it is still working the birds! So you never know, good
luck if you decide to go for the repair.

Subject: [amsat-bb] FT847 and Lightning

I appreciate everyone who has responded to my incessant questions here
lately regarding radios, etc.. Tuesday morning, I took a hit to my
VHF/UHF vertical antenna. It came into the ham shack and got the
following equipment:

FT-847
FT-8100
RS-35A
either the LVB Tracker, the G5400 controller or both (the G5400
controller is sluggish and the LVB tracker doesn't even turn on)
cable modem
router
my PC's NIC
my kids' PC's NIC
and reset a couple of GFI outlets throughout the house.

I have been asking the questions of the radios because I have an FT857
that I was not in use at the time; however, it does not have full duplex
capability. I really like the 857 and wouldn't mind having another, but
the FT817 would be (from what I read) a great little receiver and it's a
bit less expensive (I can add filters to it at that cost). As for the
847, I work in telecom and I know what kind of damage you fight from a
lightning strike. I could send it to Yaesu, but when it comes back,
I'll be fighting with it from now on. I just don't want to spend $500
for repairs only to have to send it back six months later for repairs
again. I'll try to fix it, but that's going to be kind of slow - it'll
also make for a good teacher.

As for the rotor controller, I was already going to completely take down
the HEO antenna array and put up either homebrew eggbeaters or
turnstiles. The 22 elements on 2m and 44 elements on 70cm are a tad
overkill for what is up there and they need work. I really want to put
a hexbeam up on that tower anyway. :)

I guess I'm looking for advice. Do I send the radio to Yaesu for repair
or purchase a companion for the 857? Any other advice is also welcome.

Folks, unplug and disconnect everything. We had another lightning storm
last night. At 3am, my wife woke me and said, Honey, there's
light... I ran into the hamshack and just pulled everything out of the
wall. It's funny looking back on it, but I still have a sick feeling in
my stomach.

[amsat-bb] Re: current handheld

2010-03-07 Thread Jeff KB2M
Years ago I did a test of the various handheld radio's available for sat
use. I rated the TH-F6A a distant last. Reason is that its front-end is very
sensitive to inter-mod. The test was performed in front of HRO in DE. See my
HT test report on my webpage. It can be found by navigating to QRZ.com then
lookup kb2m. I also remember when I was on a business trip to Houston. While
there I meet with Jerry k5oe, Bruce kk5do, and Al n5afv for dinner(I have a
picture of the group if anyone is interested). After dinner we went to the
parking lot to work an FM bird. As my F6A was deaf from the urban inter-mod
I had to borrow someone's HT to finish making a contact. When I got home I
sold the Kenwood. It might be good out in the country, but it sucks in the
city!...

Hi Bob,

The new Alinco is the only current-production HT that will operate full
duplex; but like others, I hear rumblings about a TH-D7 replacement from
Kenwood later this year. The D7 was full duplex.

Posters here an elsewhere haven't given the Alinco high marks for its
abilities to work the FM satellites. I haven't tried it, so I hope those who
have some experience with it will respond to you.

All of that being said, I would recommend the Kenwood TH-F6A from the group
of currently available non-full-duplex radios for one major reason - its
general coverage receiver is all mode. I borrowed one from a ham friend
several months ago and, over the course of a weekend, use it as my receive
radio with a FT-817ND as my transmit radio to make multiple contacts on all
of the then-active linear satellites (AO-7 Mode B, FO-29 and VO-52). It
performed very well as I worked all passes without a receive preamp for
either VHF or UHF.

It will work the FM satellites, while providing the bonus of giving
newcomers a chance to copy AO-7, FO-29, HO-68 in linear mode and VO-52. I
suspect that when they've heard a few passes of the linear satellites, they
will be interested in trying to get on them.

I hope this is helpful.

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 145.825 uplink

2009-12-27 Thread Jeff KB2M
Also, the interfering packet(I'm assuming you're talking about packet's
attempting to get digi'd by ISS and PCSAT) won't get acknowledged(or
processed as a packet) by HO-68 as the digi(BBS) callsign is incorrect. So,
these would only effect someone in the immediate area of the offending
unattended station, On the uplink only. On the other hand, I myself would of
chose a different uplink frequency.
I also agree it still looks like an overuse, and PL issue. When the newness
wears off, HO-68 in FM mode will work just fine, except on FD :)

Yesterday afternoon, Mark, N8MH and myself ran a little experiment on
AO-51. We linked the SQRX receiver, listening on 145.825, to the 435.150
transmitter for several minutes over the eastern US. I wanted to see how
congested the 145.825 uplink was with unattended packet beacons. We
heard about a dozen packets, about two per minute. Most of them were not
very strong.

The implication here is that HO-68 may be impacted by these unattended
beacons while in FM/Packet mode, but not very much. Most users would
have much stronger signals, and the interference is typically very short
in duration. PL issues, and interference between the Voice and Packet
system over densely populated areas is a separate issue.

[amsat-bb] most fun ever on an FM bird!

2009-12-24 Thread Jeff KB2M
The 1245z HO-68 pass was without a doubt the most fun I ever had on an FM
bird. It was the first time I could get a real feeling on how crowded the FM
bird's get over EU. I was actually competing with the EU's for contacts! I
worked f6byj, ea5sr, and on5ue. I copied the calls of 5 more EU's but
couldn't work them due to the crowd that was working the bird. I also backed
off a bit after hearing other stateside stations calling to give them a shot
at the stronger EU's. Worked nz3m, and heard ki4tz, n1sdh, and others
stateside. I can't imagine how this pass would have been on a weekend! A big
thank you to Alan BA1DU, and the rest of the CAMSAT members...

That's an interesting obsevation Dan.

If we listen to the pass at 23.15 UTC, the pass is mid Atlantic with good
communications between Western Europe and the East Coast of the USA.
Italy / Eastern Europe is out of the footprint, so there should be fewer

Do you try manually without any cable connected from a tracking interface to
program another tone pressing menu button selecting menu item
12, then selecting any other tone and exiting pressing the menu button
again. This operation should put the FT-847 in any selected tone and
you just have to press the tone button (3) to enable it.

If it's not working you already have the solution that i used about 3 times
since i got my 847 9 years now.

2009-12-21 Thread Jeff KB2M
5 years ago or so when I used to travel for work 3 weeks a month I ran a
TS-2000 located at home remotely from whatever hotel room I was operating from.
I would then run Skype from the hotel room also. I found out I could link the
audio from the remote TS-2000 with Skype. I used to have a lot of fun working
DX from my home station on Satellites, and HF. I had a 4L Steppir, rotor, and 2
wire antennas on HF, and my KLM's, with remote az/el rotor on the Sats.
I found out I could allow my Skype contacts to work DX, using my home station,
via my hotel room connection. It was more fun for me to let someone else use
my station supplying the tx audio, with me doing the PTT, then it was for me.
You west coast guys would of loved this on A-07, to work into EU. Happy

[amsat-bb] 847 PL problems

2009-12-20 Thread Jeff KB2M
I just noticed that my FT-847 is having a problem with PL tones. There are a
few things happening...
It seems to want to stay only in a PL of 67.0. When I try to operate on
SO-67 that has a PL of 233.6, I can't get into the bird, unless I tailgate.
As it seems to default to a PL of 67.0 I can work SO-50 no problem. I
checked all my cables, and also went to a different software control program
and it all points to a problem with my 847. After some testing with
different PL's, using another radio with TQSL set, it seems that when in
Satellite mode my 847 will only transmit a PL of 67. I've had my 847 I
bought new since 1997 and I never had a problem with This. When I look back
I can't remember when I needed any other PL other then 67.0, except 74.4 to
open up SO-50, last time about 3 years ago. Before I try a full reset I
thought I would ask here, to make sure I'm not missing anything stupid...

2009-12-20 Thread Jeff KB2M
I kinda remembered having that problem myself Alan. I tried different sat
memory's one with PL and one without, but I still could only get a PL of 67.
I did a full reset, and that fixed the problem. I also forgot that I had a
copy of FTBasicMMO, so I stored all memories, before I did the reset, then
restored. All is back to normal. So I don't know what happened as I'm using
the same memories. I just tested it with a sat memory in background that
contained a pl of 67, then with a non PL memory in background. Both ways let
me run SatPC32 with SO-67 with a pl of 233.6. I think you and me are the
only one's who have experienced this problem! Thanks for the sanity

Jeff,

Do you have a PL tone stored in the current satellite channel? Some time
back, 2-3 years, I found that there seemed to be a conflict in programming
the PL frequency if one was stored in memory. I switched to another
satellite channel without a PL tone stored, and the problem went away. I
just let SATPC32 take care of it. Easy enough to check, unless all your
satellite channels have tones stored.

Good luck,

I fixed the problem with a full reset. In fact this one of the few times
that a full reset actually fixed my problem with a radio! I'm sorry I wasn't
as clear as I should have been in describing my problem. I did say that I
could set a PL other than 67.0 when I didn't have the 847 in satellite mode.
When I took it out of sat mode I could achieve a PL of other then 67.0. I
also mentioned that it used to work, for at least 10 years. Weird problem,
that thankfully was easy to fix...

and it all points to a problem with my 847. After some testing with

Hello Jeff,
SatPC32 sets the FT-847 sub tone frequency for SO-67 (233.6 Hz) correctly.
I suppose you have the following data line added to SubTone.SQF:
SO-67,233.6,$01,36
The Parameter $01 is the code of the FT-847 for a 233.6 tone. .

To check the tone frequency do the following:
Select SO-67. CAT steering must be on (C+)
Click the control T0 to T1. Above the VHF uplink freqence an ENC appears.
Disable CAT (C-).
At the radio switch the bands. The VHF frequency must be on the left side.
Now press the Menu button at the FT-847 and select menu #12.
In the display you will see the tone frequency 233.6.

[amsat-bb] Re: OSCAR-11 Heard!

2009-11-23 Thread Jeff KB2M
I'm going to try and collect some telemetry here in FM29 next pass, at
14:50z. I still have my WinPack UO-11 config file, it is loaded up and my
DSP2232 is streaming 1200 baud ASCII, searching for a signal. Just like old
times! I will report back here, and send the telemetry file(if any) to
Clive...

Hi

Another very strong UO-11 pass here this evening. (0909 to 0922 utc, 60
deg) The signal became noisy with rapid fading just after UO-11 went into
eclipse at around 0919 but signals continued but gradually became weaker and
the fades deeper until I lost the signal in the noise about 1 minute before
LOS. I recorded the pass.

Hi,

I have received two reports from Keith N4ZQ (EL88ob) that he has heard
UO-11 on 19 November at 13:33 - 13:43, and on 22 November at 13:02 UTC.

He has sent me a WAV file of the second pass. Unfortunately, it's a
very low elevation pass, and probably will be difficult to decode, as it
contains a lot of noise. However it's definitely UO-11.

I'll be interested in receiving any other reports. The frequency is
145.826 MHz. Mode is FM. Further details are on my OLD website
www.users.zetnet.co.uk/clivewThere is an audio clip to help identify
the satellite.

Please e-mail me via the AMSAT reflector, or post to this bulletin board.

[amsat-bb] Re: New ICOM VHF / UHF / SHF Radio

2009-08-22 Thread Jeff KB2M
A couple of years ago while working the AMSAT booth at the Boxboro Mass
hamfest, I was chatting with Chip Margelli (who at the time still worked for
Yaesu). I asked him when is Yaesu going to come out with a new satellite
rig? Being Chip, he quickly replied with a question of his own. When are you
guys going to launch another satellite? I think this answers your question
on a new Sat rig from Yaesu!
I think it's great that Icom is coming out with a replacement for the 910
with IF DSP. I might consider picking one up, but my main interest right now
is in the upcoming FLEX-5000 VHF/UHF full duplex Upgrade. This will be the
ultimate satellite rig.

Yaesu has had at least a notional design for a replacement to the FT-847 for
some time, but has been holding off going forward until there are new
satellites which will increase demand. If this does well, perhaps Yaesu
will reconsider.

2009-07-17 Thread Jeff KB2M
I don't think the 910 or the 847 has any birdies in the sat frequencies. It
anyone finds any I would like to know. It is a shame about the 2000, it is a
much better HF TXR then the 847, but the birdie at 145800 is the satellite
use show stopper. I have all three here in the shack, and a blackbox 2000 as
my HF mobile. The only one I purchased new was the 847 in 1998 or so. The
910, and 2000's were picked up used at a very good price, the good deals are
there if your patient. I would recommend a used 847 over the 2000. The
money saved over a new TS-2000 purchase can be used to buy a better HF
performing rig then the 2000. My 2 cents.

honestly don't recall, I bought my ts2000x about 3yrs ago now. At
that time I wrestled between the TS and the IC910h

At that time I just googled both, saw a few comments regarding a
birdie for each and ended up w/the TS2000x because I figured HF would
be a added bonus along w/sky command as I live near a few schools and
wanted to do some demo's

Is the IC910 'birdie free' , with respect to satellites? Perhaps I
was incorrect

If so maybe it's time to try one :)

thanks

The $200 is a great deal. I helped sell every one we had on hand at the
AMSAT booth in Dayton. Another perspective, about 2 years ago I replaced my
ISA bussed motherboard for a new one. The only ISA bussed mobo I could
find(that was under $500) cost $190. Other then the two ISA slots, it had
the comparable performance of a $35 mobo! My next computer upgrade for my
sat control system will use an LVB to control rotors. The Kansas City
tracker ISA card will be heading to the Smithsonian Institution

Hi Myles,

Simply stated---this is a very functional and easy to use track box,
with exceptional attention to construction detail when purchased
already assembled by AMSAT (thanks, Mike Young!). It's a very fair
price at US$200. (Price out the parts to build one up...it's a deal).
It's essentially plug in, calibrate, then play!

Its interesting that nobody seemed to look at their main page, where I
found this statement:
**WOUXUN Two-way radios are CE FCC and RoHS approved.**

And further down the page:
_WOUXUN Two-way radios are FCC approved.FCC ID:WVTWOUXUN03

_Look for yourself:
http://www.wouxun.com/

So they do claim they are FCC approved and there is a FCC ID number.
Does this make everyone's argument moot?

Simple research is important sometimes. :)

[amsat-bb] Re: Re eggbeater performance - mobile

2009-05-30 Thread jeff kb2m
When I used to do a lot of driving for work I used to use a 1/4 wave, and a
high gain vertical antenna to work the birds. I would switch between the
high gain when the bird was coming up to the 1/4 wave when it was up 15
degrees or so. Then back to the high gain vertical when it was getting back
down below 15 degrees or so.Another good trick was to use the 1/4 for TX
only, and listen with 1/2 of an Arrow (with pre-amp) for the 70cm, D/L out
the drivers window, this would give you near armchair copy, when pulled over
of course !

 For mobile work on AO27, SO50, AO51
a 2 metre quarter wave whip is all
you need... to work the LEO's mobile
and the satellite is 15 degrees or
 more above the horizon,

Absolutely, For a 19.5 whip in center of roof:

1) Has 5 dBi gain above 20 deg on 2m
2) Has 7+ dBi gain above 30 deg on 70cm
3) Is an omni
4) does not sacrifice 3 dB for circular
5) Above 25 deg, satellite is 6 to 10 dB closer!
6) works the birds solid for the center of high passes
7) Simplicity at its best!

Read about it: www.aprs.org/rotator1.html

Disadvantage: The only disadvantage is TIME. On the above web page you can
also see that satellites spend 70% of their daily pass times below 25
degrees. BUT! For those best passes in the morning and the evening (or
whenever) you can make solid contacts while mobile for about 5 minutes.

Also note, that you do NOT need any tracking program to predict passes.
AO51 schdule repeats evry 5 days for example. Just write down the CENTER
pass of the morning and evening for each day for 5 days. Update those 10
times on a small 3/5 card on the dash about once a month or so will predict
all passes whenever you are mobile. There will be a pass 100 minutes
earlier and 100 minutes later each day too. So you can predict all 6 passes
a day from those same 10 times.

See how: www.aprs.org/MobileLEOtracking.html
