[amsat-bb] sat equip sale
First I would like to say thanks for all the replies about my move, and sale of equipment. What a great group on this SIG. I did make it down here to my shore home today to try and work AO-73, by the time I got here I could just make the last pass of the day. Unfortunately it was a .6 degree pass that lasted about 2 minutes. So no joy. I did get everything configured in SatPC32 and will be ready next time I make it down here. I also want to thank everyone for their concerns, but this is a happy time in my life, I recently re-married and we're planning to move to Florida. I'm looking for a home near the beach, but still antenna friendly, this is proving to be difficult . Just in case, I'm going to keep the Cushcraft AOP's, and the 9100. I see the satellite aspect of this hobby getting better . When I get back home tonite I will update the for sale list and send it out to all who requested it. 73 Jeff kb2m ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] K2I DE sat trip
I'm sorry I didn't get to work everyone on SO-50 who called me this morning when I was in DE but I just wasn't hearing the bird as well as I would of liked to. I did work 3 of you, so I guess the trip was worth it. I was thinking of making the early morning passes tomorrow, but it is just too early for me to realistically think I could get there in time. I will be on at my summer home (with the good antennas in SNJ :-) ) for the rest of the event. I hope to work everyone from NJ as K2I. 73 Jeff kb2m ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: error loading SatPC32
This makes sense Eric as I tried to replace the PRIOR.SQF file in CfgIV(the one I had selected when the failure happened) with the PRIOR.SQF from Cfg1. This didn't fix the error. I at that point ran DATABACKUP which of course over wrote any and all of the files in question. If this happens again, I will send you the 2 files. The message Error loading PRIOR.SQF indicates a missing or damaged file PRIOR.SQF but more probably a missing or damaged file SatStart.SQF which stores a lot of settings when the program is configured. Unfortunately I didn't change the text of the error message between loading these 2 files. The files are stored in the DATA folder SatPC32 for configuration 1 and in the subfolders CfgII .. CfgIV for the 3 other configurations. I don't know the reason yet that causes the error, however. Perhpas it would be good to send me the files 2 files if the error occurs. As Alan mentioned already: The easiest solution is to store a working configuration with DATABACKUP and to restore it with this tool if necessary. BTW: The path to the DATA folder SatPC322 is displayed in the footline of menu Satellites. The folder Application data or Apps data is hidden by default. So, it is necessary to make hidden files visible (Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View). 73s, Erich, DK1TB - Original Message - From: Alan wa4...@gmail.com To: 'Jeff KB2M' k...@comcast.net; 'amsat' amsat-bb@amsat.org Sent: Tuesday, February 05, 2013 12:21 AM Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: error loading SatPC32 Jeff, Sorry the easy fix did not work. [amsat-bb] Re: error loading SatPC32
Thanks Alan. I tried to copy a Prior.SQF from a different config setup and it didn't work. This tells me that each Prior.SQL is somehow different. I ended up doing as you suggested, restoring it from a SatPC32 databackup that I ran when I installed the new version. The program now starts. Unfortunately, as this is my rover laptop that I have configured for a different QTH I lost all my unique settings for that QTH. I will now run SatPC32 databackup every time I make any major changes. Assuming WIN8 is similar, and you are using CONFIG I ,yours will be in: C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\SatPC32\PRIOR.SQF (Replace Alan with your account name on your computer.) You can recover it from your system backups, which I assume you make. Another way is to use the SATPC32 DATABACKUP program, which will restore things to the last time you used it. It will be in the base SATPC32 directory. A third way will be to get it from the default files which are installed: C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\SatPC32\SQF_Files_Eng\PRIOR.SQF (Replace Alan with your account name on your computer.) With luck, one of these will work. Since I first posted about Hector CO6CBF coming to the AMSAT Symposium in Orlando next week, I have received lots of e-mails showing appreciation for this effort. Thanks to everyone for their support! I wanted to mention that I have already received some checks at my mailbox today, in response to the request I made for donations to help with the expenses related to Hector's trip. I won't list names and calls, but here is what arrived so far: $200 check from Texas $ 25 check from Arkansas $ 20 check from Alabama Along with a $50 check I received from Tennessee some time ago before I went public with this effort on the -BB, this means I have already received $295 toward Hector's trip. Since I have not had time to scribble a web page related to this, I will post updates here on the -BB and my Twitter feed updates related to Hector's trip. I do not intend on making public a list of names and calls of those who have contributed, as a few have asked for anonymity - which I will respect. All contributions are appreciated, no matter how big or small. A couple of hams have asked me if I would accept contributions in person at the Symposium next week. This would be OK with me. In person, cash would also be acceptable. You could send me cash through the mail, but all standard disclaimers regarding cash sent through the mail apply. Hector sent an e-mail out this morning to me and a few others. He is back in his home city Cienfuegos, after a quick trip to Havana so he could pick up his passport with its newly-issued US visa at the US embassy (formally called the US Interests Section, which operates as a branch of the Swiss embassy in Havana due to the lack of diplomatic relations between the USA and Cuba) yesterday morning. Hector delivered his passport to a Cuban immigration office in Cienfuegos today, so his Cuban travel permit can also be put into his passport. He should be able to pick that up tomorrow, and then he has all the government-issued documentation needed to make the trip - and I can purchase his air ticket for the flights between Havana and Miami. That's all for now. Things are falling into place, with not much time remaining until the Symposium. For those not able to make it to Orlando, I'm sure there will be photos and videos posted from the Symposium featuring Hector. More on that later. 73! Here is what you will get. 1 one owner FT-847 in nice condition. 1 FC-20 HF/6M antenna tuner 1 YF-112S-02 SSB filter 1 Symek TNC3S 1 hand mic 1 Yaesu MD-100 desk mic Original Manual, and box for the 847. Various cables to hook it all together. The 847 has the Symek 64k baud wide front end mod. This doesn't affect the normal performance as it is a just an isolated tap off of the RX front end that has its own wide receiver. It allows you to receive 38k4 baud packet. I'm asking $1000.00 for the entire package shipped insured CONUS. Outside the CONUS I will calculate actual shipping costs, minus estimated CONUS. Also I will donate 10% of the net profit from the sale and apply to the AMSAT program of the purchasers choice 73 Jeff kb2m ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. First , as I was very tired last night from working at finishing up my newly finished basement shack I neglected to mention I didn't have the problem will all SatPC32 configurations, the program was behaving properly with configuration 1. I avoided this issue for at least a year until now, as I had to add another radio. I did a search for all occurrences' of SatPos.SQF I found the offending file, did an edit, but the edit wouldn't stick as I couldn't quit the program properly(with a proper quit) as the SatPC32 window was still off screen. What I figured out I had to do, was change the SatPC32 shortcut start properties to start maximized. After the program came up, I then saved it with a quit. Then changed startup properties back to a normal window. Then restarted SatPC32 and positioned the window where I wanted it to startup and then did another quit. I had to do this for configurations 2, 3, and 4. I'm running XP , never configured a second monitor, I have no idea how this happened. Thanks for all the help. [amsat-bb] Re: SatPS32 off screen window
The problem was that the window was off screen AND the move option wasn't available, all that was available was minimize, or x close. Try right clicking on the satps32 in the taskbar, then try an alt space bar. The observer two window comes up with the move option, and that is what will move :-). Like I said none of the normal window fixes worked, or were available. What I did fixed the problem, and also after I sent my last post I had to chuckle as what Erich said would of course worked if executed before I loaded SatPC32... 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: Gregg Wonderly [mailto:w5...@cox.net] Sent: Saturday, December 10, 2011 12:18 PM To: Jeff KB2M Cc: 'Erich Eichmann'; amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: Re: [amsat-bb] Re: SatPS32 off screen window When a window is off screen, it is possible to move that window on screen by right clicking it in the task bar, selecting move, and then holding down the appropriate left or right arrow keys to move it on the display. I like the list the way it is. When someone starts a negative thread they usually end up making an ass out of themselves, and then go away. This went on for weeks and weeks. There have been many more instances of this. We have always had problems with let's say one person being negative and starting a flame thread going. What makes this list unique is that it is not moderated and everyone can voice their opinion. How would you feel if you posted a message to the list and you used a word in it that the moderator felt was not appropriate for the list and your message was bounced? It puts a tremendous amount of work and responsibility on the moderator. He cannot do it alone so you will have multiple moderators. Now, you have several people all of which will be interpreting the rules a different way. We see this in the court room on a daily basis. One guy robs a bank and gets 5 years another does it and gets 2. One is caught DWI and gets probation another gets 2 years. This is how our messages will be interpreted and this is probably worse than us being able to filter what we want when we want. When a thread does not meet my standards, I filter the thread to the junk bin and if there is someone that is continuously wreaking havoc, I filter them out. I have total control of what I read and see. And, as some have done over the years including board members, unsubscribe. [amsat-bb] 5500 rotor problem
Starting to put my satellite system back on the air. Now having another rotor problem. I think what happened is that after Hurricane Irene passed by, everything was working. Later that morning a surprisingly strong wind gust after Irene passed by blew my sat array over. I was unaware of this and when I tried to work a sat I had a very weak signal. I went outside to check the antenna system and found it laying on the ground. So what I think happened is that the rotor was trying to turn while the antenna was on the ground and burned out something in the rotor. It is not a cable problem, it is definitely in the azimuth rotor, elevation works fine. I swap cables and this showed the problem is in the az rotor only. Anyone have this same problem? I'm going to take the rotor apart this weekend and would like some ideas before I start. Any electrical test through the cable from inside the shack to determine the problem would be much appreciated :-) 73 Jeff kb2m ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Ok I started working the problem tonight. I would first like to thank, Al Wa4sca, Stan W1le, and Jeff N3qo, for some ideas on what the problem might be. What I found so far is an open between 4 5 and 6. Any combination of the three is open. So I'm assuming I burned out the motor windings in the azimuth rotor to cause an open. I'm also assuming as the rotor is less than 3 years old that it doesn't have a fused link? I went through my parts bin and found a working Yaesu G-450 rotor. I wonder if the 450 and the 5500 azimuth rotor use the same motor, did anyone try this? 73 Jeff kb2m On Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 7:09 AM, Jeff KB2M k...@comcast.net wrote: Starting to put my satellite system back on the air. [amsat-bb] Re: MARK AUSTIN KB1GRV
This is very sad news. I met Mark in person in 2002 or so on one of my many trips to Bar Harbor Maine. We became acquainted by sending text messages via MIR then ISS. Marks love of the MIR/ISS packet network was very profound. Last time I had dinner with Mark while passing through Ellsworth on my way to work on the Bucks Harbor ARSR4 radar he gave me an 8x10 picture of him with the race car he was involved in. I just went out in the garage and found it and plan on framing it and hanging it in my shack. I thought there would be a number of you that might like to know.Pete, K1HZU Hello Folks, If you have not heard already, local (Franklin/Ellsworth) ham Mark Austin, KB1GVR, became a silent key on August 8. Graveside services will be this Thursday, Aug 18, at 11AM at Woodbine cemetery in Ellsworth. Mark was very prolific in space communications. In 2002, he told me that he was listening to his scanner, I think in 1997, and heard Russian voices coming over the speaker about every hour and 36 minutes. He discovered the voices were from cosmonauts on board the Mir Space Station. He then started recording their SSTV broadcasts and then went out and bought his first computer so he could see the pictures he had previously recorded from the Soviet slow scan TV transmissions. That inspired him to earn his ham ticket so he could talk to the cosmonauts. And talk, he did. Since then, Mark has become well known aboard the space shuttles and International Space Station by many astronauts and cosmonauts. Not only has Mark talked to them on voice mode, but became extremely proficient at using the space station and satellites to communicate digitally. He even discovered a new way of using one particular satellite to extend communication capability. Mark had the opportunity to meet some of the spacemen he had befriended on-the-air when he made visits to Mission Control in Houston and to Kennedy Space Center, where he also was thrilled to watch a shuttle launch. His enthusiasm with space communications inspired many hams to give it a try, including myself. His advice was spot on so that I twice successfully made voice contacts to the space station. I also had fun with Oscar-14 with Mark's tips. If you operated an APRS station in Maine, you would recognize the KB1GVR call sign, as Mark was also an avid APRS fan. Mark's other pastimes included racing and flying with his brother in his plane where his same determination brought him lots of success, rewards, and joy. The walls of Marks home were decorated with the many ham radio and racing certificates and awards he had earned and his vast collection of space communications QSL cards is amazing, as many EAWA members can attest to as Mark has brought them in for display in the past. Mark was only 50 years old, but in his too-short life, he accomplished a lot. As N1DP said on last night's Washington County ARES Net, Godspeed Mark. We will miss you. 73, Phil Duggan, N1EP ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? Join now to support the amateur satellite program! Thanks for all the replies on my 5500 rotor problem! I had some time tonite to work on it and here's what I got. On both a1 a3, and e1 e3 pairs I'm reading only 1.0 volts. [amsat-bb] Re: FM satellites
I remember one winter sometime around 1998 there was a real bad ice storm on the east coast. Canadian hams were using AO-27 to pass health and welfare traffic. There was no electricity up there for months, propagation was bad, there was no other way for some. I passed some traffic myself, sent out an email letting relatives know that they were ok. [amsat-bb] Re: Field Day AO-51 configuration - another option
The trouble with V/S is that any clueless group trying to make a sat contact will be blindly transmitting on the 2m uplinks. Since nothing is being heard on the UHF downlink, they think the bird is open, so call CQ even more. Their thinking mode V/U, it totally blows away the S band D/L. This happened 3 or 4 years ago. The whole pass was people calling CQ FD without listening to the mode s D/L. A disaster. I don't think I heard even 1 contact being made on several east coast passes I tried. We have to remember there are a lot of groups trying to make a sat contact for the points, that don't read this SIG, so they just try calling on the V/U frequencies. I'm for L/U. It would be cool to try L/S, but I think I was told it isn't possible because it wouldn't leave a channel for control? 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Alan P. That would certainly encourage people to try L/U or V/S. Based on last year's numbers, every L/U station could have worked every other station easily, given the shortness of a FD QSO. Considering that people manage to work these modes portable, and in the case of N5AFV, mobile, it is relatively easy to get on. The mode-S downlink is truly loud, easily overcoming the general 2.45 GHz QRM/QRN. Alan WA4SCA ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Re: FT847 and Lightning
Joel, I took a lightning hit with my 847 in 1997. It was a big one, took out my sat tv, phone, TNC's , KCT card, computer's, etc. I had disconnected the antennas, power, everything except the modem(remember them?), that's where it got in, through the phone line, to the rs-232 port. I had an APRS station I left up and didn't disconnect during the event and it was fine! Go figure. To make a long story short I sent the 847 in that was only 3 weeks old to be looked at. Yaesu graciously fixed it under warranty. I was also Leary about keeping a lightning compromised radio after a lightning hit but I really didn't want to sell it to anyone so I kept it. Now 11 years later it is still working the birds! So you never know, good luck if you decide to go for the repair. 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Joel Black Sent: Friday, March 12, 2010 19:33 PM To: AMSAT Subject: [amsat-bb] FT847 and Lightning I appreciate everyone who has responded to my incessant questions here lately regarding radios, etc.. Tuesday morning, I took a hit to my VHF/UHF vertical antenna. It came into the ham shack and got the following equipment: FT-847 FT-8100 RS-35A either the LVB Tracker, the G5400 controller or both (the G5400 controller is sluggish and the LVB tracker doesn't even turn on) cable modem router my PC's NIC my kids' PC's NIC and reset a couple of GFI outlets throughout the house. I have been asking the questions of the radios because I have an FT857 that I was not in use at the time; however, it does not have full duplex capability. I really like the 857 and wouldn't mind having another, but the FT817 would be (from what I read) a great little receiver and it's a bit less expensive (I can add filters to it at that cost). As for the 847, I work in telecom and I know what kind of damage you fight from a lightning strike. I could send it to Yaesu, but when it comes back, I'll be fighting with it from now on. I just don't want to spend $500 for repairs only to have to send it back six months later for repairs again. I'll try to fix it, but that's going to be kind of slow - it'll also make for a good teacher. As for the rotor controller, I was already going to completely take down the HEO antenna array and put up either homebrew eggbeaters or turnstiles. The 22 elements on 2m and 44 elements on 70cm are a tad overkill for what is up there and they need work. I really want to put a hexbeam up on that tower anyway. :) I guess I'm looking for advice. Do I send the radio to Yaesu for repair or purchase a companion for the 857? Any other advice is also welcome. Folks, unplug and disconnect everything. We had another lightning storm last night. At 3am, my wife woke me and said, Honey, there's light... I ran into the hamshack and just pulled everything out of the wall. It's funny looking back on it, but I still have a sick feeling in my stomach. ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Re: current handheld
Years ago I did a test of the various handheld radio's available for sat use. I rated the TH-F6A a distant last. Reason is that its front-end is very sensitive to inter-mod. The test was performed in front of HRO in DE. See my HT test report on my webpage. It can be found by navigating to QRZ.com then lookup kb2m. I also remember when I was on a business trip to Houston. While there I meet with Jerry k5oe, Bruce kk5do, and Al n5afv for dinner(I have a picture of the group if anyone is interested). After dinner we went to the parking lot to work an FM bird. As my F6A was deaf from the urban inter-mod I had to borrow someone's HT to finish making a contact. When I got home I sold the Kenwood. It might be good out in the country, but it sucks in the city!... 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Tim - N3TL Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2010 15:15 PM To: 'Bob- W7LRD'; amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: current handheld Hi Bob, The new Alinco is the only current-production HT that will operate full duplex; but like others, I hear rumblings about a TH-D7 replacement from Kenwood later this year. The D7 was full duplex. Posters here an elsewhere haven't given the Alinco high marks for its abilities to work the FM satellites. I haven't tried it, so I hope those who have some experience with it will respond to you. All of that being said, I would recommend the Kenwood TH-F6A from the group of currently available non-full-duplex radios for one major reason - its general coverage receiver is all mode. I borrowed one from a ham friend several months ago and, over the course of a weekend, use it as my receive radio with a FT-817ND as my transmit radio to make multiple contacts on all of the then-active linear satellites (AO-7 Mode B, FO-29 and VO-52). It performed very well as I worked all passes without a receive preamp for either VHF or UHF. It will work the FM satellites, while providing the bonus of giving newcomers a chance to copy AO-7, FO-29, HO-68 in linear mode and VO-52. I suspect that when they've heard a few passes of the linear satellites, they will be interested in trying to get on them. Also, the interfering packet(I'm assuming you're talking about packet's attempting to get digi'd by ISS and PCSAT) won't get acknowledged(or processed as a packet) by HO-68 as the digi(BBS) callsign is incorrect. So, these would only effect someone in the immediate area of the offending unattended station, On the uplink only. On the other hand, I myself would of chose a different uplink frequency. I also agree it still looks like an overuse, and PL issue. When the newness wears off, HO-68 in FM mode will work just fine, except on FD :) 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Glasbrenner Sent: Sunday, December 27, 2009 12:59 PM Cc: amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: [amsat-bb] HO-68 145.825 uplink Yesterday afternoon, Mark, N8MH and myself ran a little experiment on AO-51. I wanted to see how congested the 145.825 uplink was with unattended packet beacons. We heard about a dozen packets, about two per minute. Most of them were not very strong. The implication here is that HO-68 may be impacted by these unattended beacons while in FM/Packet mode, but not very much. Most users would have much stronger signals, and the interference is typically very short in duration. PL issues, and interference between the Voice and Packet system over densely populated areas is a separate issue. 73, Drew KO4MA ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] 847 PL problems
I just noticed that my FT-847 is having a problem with PL tones. There are a few things happening... It seems to want to stay only in a PL of 67.0. When I try to operate on SO-67 that has a PL of 233.6, I can't get into the bird, unless I tailgate. As it seems to default to a PL of 67.0 I can work SO-50 no problem. I checked all my cables, and also went to a different software control program and it all points to a problem with my 847. After some testing with different PL's, using another radio with TQSL set, it seems that when in Satellite mode my 847 will only transmit a PL of 67. I've had my 847 I bought new since 1997 and I never had a problem with This. When I look back I can't remember when I needed any other PL other then 67.0, except 74.4 to open up SO-50, last time about 3 years ago. [amsat-bb] Re: 847 PL problems
I fixed the problem with a full reset. In fact this one of the few times that a full reset actually fixed my problem with a radio! I'm sorry I wasn't as clear as I should have been in describing my problem. I did say that I could set a PL other than 67.0 when I didn't have the 847 in satellite mode. When I took it out of sat mode I could achieve a PL of other then 67.0. I also mentioned that it used to work, for at least 10 years. Weird problem, that thankfully was easy to fix... and it all points to a problem with my 847. After some testing with different PL's, using another radio with TQSL set, it seems that when in Satellite mode my 847 will only transmit a PL of 67. I think this answers your question on a new Sat rig from Yaesu! I think it's great that Icom is coming out with a replacement for the 910 with IF DSP. [amsat-bb] Re: Re eggbeater performance - mobile
When I used to do a lot of driving for work I used to use a 1/4 wave, and a high gain vertical antenna to work the birds. I would switch between the high gain when the bird was coming up to the 1/4 wave when it was up 15 degrees or so. Then back to the high gain vertical when it was getting back down below 15 degrees or so.Another good trick was to use the 1/4 for TX only, and listen with 1/2 of an Arrow (with pre-amp) for the 70cm, D/L out the drivers window, this would give you near armchair copy, when pulled over of course ! 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Bob Bruninga Sent: Saturday, May 30, 2009 8:19 AM To: mikehooles; amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: Re eggbeater performance - mobile For mobile work on AO27, SO50, AO51 a 2 metre quarter wave whip is all you need... to work the LEO's mobile and the satellite is 15 degrees or more above the horizon, Absolutely, For a 19.5 whip in center of roof: 1) Has 5 dBi gain above 20 deg on 2m 2) Has 7+ dBi gain above 30 deg on 70cm 3) Is an omni 4) does not sacrifice 3 dB for circular 5) Above 25 deg, satellite is 6 to 10 dB closer! 6) works the birds solid for the center of high passes 7) Simplicity at its best! Read about it: www.aprs.org/rotator1.html Disadvantage: The only disadvantage is TIME. On the above web page you can also see that satellites spend 70% of their daily pass times below 25 degrees. BUT! For those best passes in the morning and the evening (or whenever) you can make solid contacts while mobile for about 5 minutes. Also note, that you do NOT need any tracking program to predict passes. AO51 schdule repeats evry 5 days for example. Just write down the CENTER pass of the morning and evening for each day for 5 days. Update those 10 times on a small 3/5 card on the dash about once a month or so will predict all passes whenever you are mobile. There will be a pass 100 minutes earlier and 100 minutes later each day too. So you can predict all 6 passes a day from those same 10 times.
